ok so i mentioned yesterday that i have a love-hate relationship with disney’s hunchback of notre dame so i guess i could explain why that is?
this got way longer than i expected so im putting it under the cut
let’s start with what everyone’s already said: it’s amazing that this movie exists in the first place, that the creators had the balls to stray so far away from their comfort zone and create something so sophisticated and artistically dark. i really do have a lot of respect for hunchback
...BUT
the movie doesn’t seem to know how to portray the roma characters. of course, i might not be the person suited to speak about this subject, but as someone who lives in europe, i can tell you that anti-roma racism is alive and well, and when this movie drops the ball, it really drops the ball
obviously, one of the morals is that frollo is wrong about the roma... but why is p much every roma character that isn’t esmeralda (and technically quasi) a stereotypical jerkwad? i think that undermines the moral just a bit. i guess it’s the most apparent when quasi and phoebus enter the court of miracles and they’re immediately sentenced to death no questions asked. i mean, i sorta understand why they’d distrust intruders, but aren’t you being a little too excessive? and also, since clopin was the one who decided that execution was necessary... what the hell dude? weren’t you there at the festival of fools and heard esmeralda call frollo out for abusing quasi? i mean yeah quasi starts out pretty damn gaslit but he’s a fellow victim of frollo’s cruelty, and you try to kill him for his troubles? what the fuck clopin
and let’s talk about a more relatable complaint: the gargoyles. they’re not... that bad at first, but when they decide to have a musical number, they kinda lose me. i mean, a guy like you is technically not as bad as clopin’s song number in the court of miracles, but their timing is fucking amazing. this is right before esmeralda arrives with phoebus and it becomes apparent that they’re falling for each other, so the only thing the gargoyles accomplished was to set up poor quasi for heartbreak. i guess they’re kinda similar to the trolls from frozen since both have a mood whiplash-tastic song number at the worst possible time leading to more anguish in the lead character
and also: the fandom. first off, the portion that can’t let go of the fact that quasi didn’t end up with esmeralda and go so far to talk abt how esmeralda “friendzoned” him (ew). quasi not ending up with his love interest is kinda the point, numbskulls! you should be happy that the leads are even alive by the end. i once read somebody say that while frollo saw esmeralda as a demon and quasi saw her as an angel, phoebus was the only one who saw her as an equal, and that’s why they ended up together, and that’s something i wholeheartedly agree with. worshipping another human being and believing they can do no wrong is pretty unhealthy, and that’s why quasi can’t be with esmeralda, because their relationship wouldn’t be healthy
...and then there’s the frollo fangirls. this is one thing i never see when people mention things that should be considered cringe culture but isn’t. i completely understand appreciating frollo for being the de facto darkest disney villain with a similarily dark villain song, but? his fandom is more interested in making him look like he did no wrong... you’re missing the entire fucking point, you clowns
but despite all these flaws, i do think hunchback is a great movie that does a lot of things right
