SAL FISHER RELATIONSHIP HC ! ₊˚⊹
₊˚⊹ PAIRING(s): Sal fisher x Gn!reader
Tumblr media
He’s so sweet it hurts
Honestly, Sal is the best boyfriend ever, he’s always there for you and he always knows the perfect things to say when comforting you.
The two of you met because of the ghosts and the whole cult thing while at high school.
You were the more outspoken one out of the two of you since Sal was mostly against violence even when Travis was brought into the convo.
I can definitely see Sal being the first one to approach you.
It all started when Sal started becoming increasingly interested in you to the point that Larry and even ash started teasing and encouraging him to talk to you.
He would fluster, occasionally and say the wrong words out of nervousness however with luck, he managed to get your number.
It was hard not to fall for him, especially with how lovable he is.
He’s so genuinely nice and actually cares for others.
Of course, you eventually see his face, and although he was neutral about it since he trusted you he was still a bit nervous.
Definitely warms his heart when you not only accept his face but also kiss it.
He flusters and stutters so badly afterwards.
Continuing from that, he’s definitely the type to tease lightheartedly
Definitely not in the beginning though
So when you first started teasing and provoking him, causing him to get super flustered
He wouldn’t really know what to do except accept it, so imagine your surprise when he turns the tables once day and makes you a blushing mess
Most times when you hang out, you usually hang at the apartments in his room, or when sals an adult you’d hang out in his room in the house
During these hang outs you guys would usually listen to some music or just enjoy each others presence
Most times it’s just you and sal cuddling and ngl he smells rlly good
Like I’m not even joking and when you mention this, he can’t help but laugh and just tells you do too
However, when you guys hang out with Larry (which is more often than not) you guys end up in more than sus situations 😭😭
The. Larry is all like “I’ll leave you guys at it” and dips
Like??? We’re not doing anything 😭🗣️
Anyway
While you’re at high school ofc Travis has something to say, and if you’re a guy then he obviously calls you the f slur and a lot of homophobic nonsense
And if you’re a girl Travis still calls y’all homos in a negative way, and always says shit about you two
And I don’t think I need elaborate further about how Travis would probably hate crime you if you were non-binary, gender fluid, or basically anything under the trans umbrella
(Basically any gender identity that isn’t your assigned one 😭
Larry, ash, and Todd all get pissed at Travis , and they always come to the both of your guy’s defense
And ofc Sal is bit lenient towards Travis, well only ever when Travis is talking shit about him
If Travis talks shit about you he’d be pissed
But ofc younger Sal is less violent and more open so he’d obvs be kinder
Anyway, we all know what happens at the apartments and if you live there-
Let’s just say it pains Sal so much to have to kill you
I mean him having to kill all the people he grew up with and the people he cares for is horrible but he knows he has to
However, if you don’t, well let’s say you know about the cult and why he did it
Still doesn’t stop you from trying to find a way to get a lower sentence and from trying the convince ash of the truth
When sal dies, let’s just say you feel so alone
Of course you have ash by your side but it’s just horrible
Eventually you’re the person that sals soul would enter and you’d defeat the cult that way
But let’s all pretend that they were able to defeat the cult without having to kill the innocent tenants
Making sal a free man
Well if it were that way, you and Sal would be together for a long time, and if you both wished it, married too

Big Celestia/Chihiro/Celeshiro headcanon post:
Wanted to compile a bunch of my headcanons here:
Celeste:
Starts off cold towards the class as in canon, but warms up to them. Becomes fiercly protective of them since they'rw her only friends
If she catches people bullying Toko, Chihiro, Taka, Hifumi, Makoto, etc she will retaliate
Is trying to come off super cool but is actually incredibly awkward. Most of the class still think she is cool after bedriending her
Extremely eager to show off her knowledge about her interests. Will just infodump on whoever is willing to listen.
Cries a lot in secret
Very insecure about her body and appearance
Also insecure about her interests that aren't gambling and European culture. Only Chihiro, Hifumi, Makoto, and Kyoko know she's into things like manga and video games. The rest suspect she's secretly a nerd.
Speaking of also prone to gamer rage and she's very thankful the dorms are sound proof
Secretly a My Little Pony fan. Only Chihiro knows because they made a joke while they were hanging out once about her name and noticed her panic. She took her first name from Princess Celestia. Also why she calls the others darling after befriending them.
If Byakuya's not around she'll be one of the first to offer to pay. She is bad at showing how much she values the others so she compensates with paying for meals or tickets to places
Basically kind of a bitchy Rarity once she has gotten over herself and connected with everyone.
Sews her own clothes, and eventually starts making clothes for the others with a discount on comissions
Gets roped into the obligatory D&D episode by Hifumi
Comes from a family that lived in poverty, got bullied as a kid as a result
Part of the bullying was being called a loser over and over again
Why she ends up being one of the first to stick up for the others
Has learned some self-defense to protect herself since she spends a lot of time illegally gambling
While she does drop more and more of her persona as time goes on, and is more authentic with everyone she still prefers the Celestia name and fancy clothing. They help her feel comfortable in her own skin.
She's only really comfortable using Taeko with the rest of Class 78, and even then not when they're out in public
Absolutely unable to cook well
Will start arguments with Byakuya, Leon, and/or Mondo for the fun of it.
Her and Makoto kinda confide in each other about how they feel like fakes next to everyone else.
She has read every single one of Toko"s books multiple times.
Ocassionally she will correct Hifumi when he gets something wrong about an anime and whistle innocently when people are stunned she knew that.
Makes the time to go to events the others are doing like Sayaka's concerts or Hina's swim meets.
Once she went with Hifumi to help sell his doujins. Ended up with Hifumi punching a guy in the face for creeping on her.
Sakura and Mondo also worry about her going to seedy parts of town to gamble and have discreetly followed her to make sure she's safe
She enjoys challenging Kyoko to various cars games
She also ends up enjoying discussing history with Taka
While at first she really hated Yasuhiro she did end up finding he could have surprisingly good advice from time to time.
Chihiro:
Trans girl. I accept any hcs on their gender. For me personally I just see them as a trans girl who compensated by trying to fit into a mold of manliness before realizing and accepting her identity.
She still likes to work out and try to get stronger.
Into making mods for video games
Has been into just about every embarassing fandom at one point or another. Superwholock, Homestuck, Undeetale, MLP, Steven Universe. She was overjoyed when she found out Celeste was too.
She will also haplily offer to pay for the others when Byakuya's not around. Her programming skills have made her a good amount of money, placing her just behind Celeste's wealth and 3rd highest overall
Also can not cook at all
Has a terrible sleep schedule, will need coffee as soon as she wakes up
While she identifies she/her she still doesn't have many feminine typical interests beyond the clothing.
Bottles up frustrations and anger, lets it out online in arguments.
Genuinely admires all of her classmates
Besides Makoto she is the most popular person in her class
Cries a lot too, but openly
She has written a program for each classmate that helps with their talent in some way
Celeshiro:
They kept it a secret for a long time
While keeping it a secret everyone thought they were just crushing on each other and kept trying to get them together
They kept playing it off pretending not to get it
Kyoko knew from the start
When they finally let the others know it was after they had an argument that was their first big argument.
They like spending a lot of time together in their dorms watching movies/tv, playing games together, being affectionate, and talking a lot
Because they both have a lot of hang ups they end up comforting one another a lot.
Said this before but Celeste ended up trauma dumping on the first date.
Celeste also had a panic attack prior to the date
In general even though it seems like Celeste is the cool mature one, Chihiro is the one that's more mature
Chihiro is drawn to Celeste because she thinks she is cool, that she is protective, and admires her willpower
Celeste is drawn to Chihiro because she loves her optimisim and friendliness. That she is not judgmental, and is always willing to listen to her ramblings
After they reveal their relationship they get a lot more affectionate in public
Chihiro also basically moves into Celeste's room.
Because Celeste forgets to lock her door a lot, they have been walked in on by every single one of their classmates at least once
They get married pretty quickly after graduating
While they don't really want to have kids the old fashioned way, they do get very adoption happy and they tend to spoil the kids. They might even run a foster home
Among them is Kokichi who Celeste likes to playfully have compete against Kyoko's protege Shuichi
Kyoko nor Chihiro even realize there's supposed to be a rivalry going on
Chihiro and Celeste are very cuddly. They find it difficult to get to sleep without touching the other in some way
Celeste makes Chihiro clothes for free
Because neither of them can cook they order take out a lot.

Ok so I'm just gonna do 1 final hc post abt the rest of the characters. Bc yea
Matthew Taylor
He likes sports but he does actually try to engage with his friend's hobbies- e.g going shopping with Em and Jess, and he's definitely sat and listened to Mike rant abt politics or sth before. Hannah's bugs made him get over any fear he had of insects.
He's very patient and friendly but when he gets mad he gets MAD. (we see that in game anyway tho tbh).
Ashley often helps him with homework.
He has ADHD.
He has a younger sister.
He has pet guinea pigs that he loves and Jess always jokes she only hangs out with him for them.
He's pansexual.
He's had a tiny little crush on Josh before.
He was decent friends with Mike before everything.
Even after him and Em break up he stays as a close friend of hers.
He's a bit of a pushover.
Michael Munroe (I'll be as nice to him as I can).
After UD he develops a fascination with wolves.
He's not actually as well-off as some of the other kids in the group, and he's sort of insecure about it which led to him putting up his whole confident guy charade which evolved into him being a massive dickhead.
His mother passed away when he was young and his Dad is an asshole. He spends most of his time out of his own house and his own bedroom is quite empty.
He scares quite easily and when he's alone he often ends up talking to himself just so there's a distraction.
When he's alone his whole persona comes crashing down. Part of why he fears isolation.
He has ADD, and he also has narcisstic traits.
He's also autistic but thats more me and my friend projecting when we write him lol.
He's pretty smart in the subjects he likes but he lacks common sense and does lots of dumb things.
He lived in Florida until he was 14.
He's demiromantic bisexual.
He needs to feel useful or he gets quite upset. This often ends up with him taking on the sort of 'leader' role in the group.
He tends to clash with Josh a lot, and Beth.
Christopher Hartley
He's not a massive fan of animals. He's either scared of them or complains about them being dirty/diseased.
He's trans.
He isn't into doing sports but he is surprisingly strong.
He's autistic.
He knows basically everything about technology and fuck all about anything else.
He did not pay attention in most of his subjects and then would end up going to Ashley for help and she'd scold him.
When he was young and first met Josh's sisters he was just. Amazed by the fact Hannah was allowed to be a girl.
He had a short-lived crush on Hannah as a kid. And it was mostly envy.
When he was a kid he had long hair, which he complained about until he got a 'compromise' with sort of medium hair length. When he was 15 he chopped it all off himself and has had it short ever since. (he was also in so much trouble).
He has quiet bpd. (this is sort of projection ignore me pls. I have my reasons I am not going to explain them here).
He's biromantic demisexual.
He's pretty much always had a massive crush on Josh that he barely realised.
He's generally just kind of a disaster bi.
He's very quick to get defensive and upset.
He tends to go way too far with pranks and the only people who can ever really reel him back in are Josh and Ashley.

reki for the hc game? :]
for your knowledge i've watched 2 and a half episodes so. this may not be that detailed and canon compliant sorry eheh <3
OH I WROTE SO MUCH. SORRY
realistic hc - maybe not THAT realistic but i think he puts a lot stickers on his skateboards!! so many that they overlap actually <33 some of them are from super long ago so they're all yellowed but he keeps them on anyway bc they hold memories that are dear to him.
while it may not be realistic it is hilarious - i haven't seen much of miya so far, but if they do end up on friendly-ish terms i think miya teases reki about langa a lot. he keeps calling langa reki's boyfriend and constantly joking about how they're in love to piss reki off. one time while reki's complaining about this to himself his younger sisters overhear and tell it to his mom. she probably tries to nonchalantly mention this at dinner but he ends up almost choking on his food while trying to convince her he's NOT in love with langa AT ALL!! she just nods and tries to pretend she believes him on that but it's kind of obvious she doesn't buy it. every time langa come over after that reki's sisters always spy on them and gossip really loudly in the next room. reki is constantly trying to convince langa that they're just trying to be annoying! langa belives it but doesn't really understand why reki gets so defensive and blushy over it <33
heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends - i think struggles with self-worth a LOT. being the eldest sibling (i think he is right?) can be really hard, and pair that with the fact that he basically doesn't have any friends at the beginning and you get perfect angst potential. being a trans neurodivergent kid and finding friends is really hard as well so he probably has abandonment issues + an inferiority complex that he hides behind humour </3 (and it only gets worse when langa turns out to be really good at skating. reki hates himself for it, but he can't help a little relieved every time langa falls down bc it serves as a reminder he's better at skating at least. he's jealous not only of langa's skill but probably of other people paying so much attention to him. on one hand he just wants a friend to himself, but also wants that kind of attention to be focused on him instead. he knows how wrong it is and suppresses it but it makes him doubt if he really is a good person like other people claim him to be sometimes. (bonus points for him getting jealous of people calling langa a 'prince' because of the gender dysphoria))
unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own - trans bi king w adhd and tourette's baby!! sorry not sorry have you seen him??? you're telling me this boy is cishet and neurotypical????? (big ty to corey for introducing me to ts reki i love him sm and it's canon to me now <33)

ya know, if somebody asked me if i’m: a lesbian, ace, aro, pan, trans
my response wouldn’t be to flip the fuck out like “UGH OH MY GOSH HOW COULD YOU EVER THINK THAT???” nah mate the proper response would just be a polite correction. heck, i’ll even say thank you. i don’t get people who are so mean and so insecure in themselves that they freak out about it
like the harshest i’d ever be is if somebody asked me if i’m straight. and even then i’ll just like LAUGH and, if online, respond with a confused reaction image
somebody confusing you for another orientation legit isn’t an insult, because those orientations or genders themselves aren’t an insult
#i'm fucking flattered when people confuse me for these things#and yes btw i have been confused for ace or pan or trans before many times#i depicted dysphoria so well whilst talking about somebody i hc as trans#that a trans man asked me if i'm a trans man!#im not but thats a huge compliment#just shows im good writer!#its easy to confuse me for these other things#because like i have hyperempathy and i'm very observant. i fucking listen bruhs#also the main reason i get confused for ace a lot is because im hella compassionate and defensive of ace people#so a decent amount of the ppl doing that DID mean it as an insult#and like... wow... thats not an insult at all#its just an orientation you don't like#get confused for straight? im confused but okay??#get confused for lesbian? hey you notice im attracted to women!! nice!!#get confused for pan? well yeah that makes sense#aro or ace? cool [thumbs up]#trans? also cool. and i feel complimented when a trans person does it because im like oh wow i must not have the uncomfy cis person vibe#my connection to my own gender is more of a Sure Why Not situation#but thats besides the point#like yeah none of this is true#but its not an INSULT#no its insulting if a person if like ''no ur not bi you're ACTUALLY-'' no don't do that#but an honest question? thats harmless#just takes a quick ''nah im bi but thanks!''#for the trans thing i'll just say nah but thanks#i'm meh about my own gender except sometimes im not? the best i can describe it (in simple terms) is i'm half woman half agender?? sort of??#more or less. that one's more a conversation thing than a quick label in a profile. so i put cis woman/gender indifferent in my profile#because thats legit the quickest way to say it

The thing is, without wanting to once again embroil myself in this discourse (because I absolutely was in the wrong last time, no argument there), there is a reason that I can be quite bearish about hcing Jarchivist as white and cis and it's not because I want to take away representation or because I think being white and cis makes him More Relateable but it's about how I read the themes of the character and the overarching podcast
the thing is to me like a major theme of the series is Jonny reflecting on the experience of obliviousness, trauma and denial from his (Jonny, the author's) perspective as a white cis man with an Oxford education and how that's informed his perception and sensitivity to other people's experiences.
and I kind of feel like that's coming through explicitly in recent stories like 185 or 187 but also back throughout the podcast. that a major thread is the ability to ignore things until they're happening to you. and particularly with Jon's character like. his whole deal is that he's spent his life consciously embracing denial and closing his eyes because if he refuses to see it, it can't hurt him. and to me that is part of a broader and increasingly explicit theme about the privilege of choosing what to see, and about the blind spots of things outside your own experience. like to me a primary theme of TMA is the intersection of power, oppression and trauma and the...messiness of it, and I think Jon often represents hegemonic privilege (he's allowed to pass untouched through horrors unless he actively chooses to interrogate and challenge them; he has access to information but not necessarily to understanding; he can and does choose not to see people's suffering until it's pointed out to him (not just in the apocalypse but throughout, with the Archive staff etc)
like. I don't think this reading is exclusive to a Jon who's white, I have implied that in the past and I think that's a shitty take. Jon can absolutely play that role and be Asian at the same time and that brings a different texture to the story.
but it is a different texture and I think I resent the idea that a character can only be white as default or as a reaction to a prevalence of hcs of colour. like I think Jon is white because I think Jon being white has a significant impact on the reading of a story which to me is vastly about power, privilege and marginalisation.
it's significant to me to think of Jon as white in direct reference to the fact that he's canonically queer, had a difficult childhood and has PTSD and mental and physical health issues. whether you read him as white or not has a significant impact on what the story says about the intersections of power and disempowerment, and to me it's an engaging reflection of the tension of Jon's power and powerlessness as an Avatar of the Eye.
and like as someone rightly pointed out during the last barney over this - being a person of colour doesn't mean your life is Just Oppression And Pain. that isn't what I'm trying to pull out here. but the experience of privilege is different if you're seen as white to if you aren't and that makes a text about privilege and systemic traumas read differently. not worse or better. but different.
idk if this makes any sense. and the thing is it may be a totally shitty read of the text. but it is a significant aspect of my reading of the text and I find it? Odd? That in fandom that is treated as a non-negotiable. like that an analysis of the text with the supposition that Jon is white is a shallow reading. not just a different one.
like I see a lot of people treating Jon being white as a non-canonical, bad reading of the text and nobody has justified that to me at all beyond saying 'I am a person of colour and Jon being a person of colour is important to me' and that's a completely reasonable way to feel imo! like there are some really good and interesting readings of the text with that in mind! I think I've often come across as dismissive of that and I don't mean to.
My reading here doesn't have more grounding than yours bc Jon doesn't canonically have a race and Jon being Asian adds a lot. but it also takes away. it's a different text with different reads on power, obliviousness, guilt and trauma. like. I think because I've been quite bullish about it, I've left a lot of people hurt and feeling like I'm saying This Is The Right Reading, and that's a thing I feel really shitty about. because that's come from a very defensive place but that doesn't excuse it, it's a Bad Take.
but like. for me the Jon Being White thing fits into the nexus of a character not necessarily being an endorsement. like if you read Jon as white then to me that changes the read on things like him being promoted ahead of Sasha, on the assumptions he makes about other characters, on his responses to the police and authority, on how he responds to instability - like they're not textually there or not there but interpratively it makes a big difference whether he's benefiting from, assimilating into or operating despite hegemonic power structures.
and the reason I'm focusing on race here isn't because race is the Big Privilege Decider but because when it comes to hegemonic privilege, Jon's race is probably the most open to interpretation; he could be bi or gay but he's definitely mlm; we know he's ace or ace spectrum; he could be trans or nb but we know that he's percieved as a man by strangers and by close friends; we can make educated guesses about his class and social background from cues like his accent, backstory and education; we know about at least some of his physical disabilities and visible scarring, and about at least some of his neurodivergence and trauma. We've spent nearly 190 episodes in this guy's head - we have cues to go on for a lot of stuff. But his ethnicity is absolutely up for interpretation and to me that's interesting.
I favour white Jon as an interpretation because I think Jonny has written a lot of this podcast as a meditation on complicity and the complexity of power and that's interesting to me when I interpret Jon as white. because with that reading the podcast becomes very much about white guilt and the destructive responses we make to guilt, to having the power to change and destroy lives and the power to ignore it, and the struggle of benefiting from a system - even needing a system - that's built on the blood and pain of millions of other people. like, the fact that Jon may Literally Die without the Eye feeding and without the apocalypse fear machine, and has to at every stage make the decision to work to destroy it and live with empathy for those trapped in it anyway, has some resonance for me with the machinery of white supremacy. and patriarchy. and hegemonic power in general. and I think the degree to which Jon the Human Person was raised profiting from those systems informs the interpretation of how Jon the Eye Monster responds to a supernatural version
and like I'm just gonna say it. I think Jon's arc of Dealing With Cops is vastly different if he's white vs if he's Asian. like I can't pretend to be speaking from a place of personal experience but most of my British Asian friends expect their treatment by the police to be coloured by Islamophobia and an assumption of foreignness. and I'm not saying that's Every British Asian Person or that I really know what I'm talking about but it seems to me that the story of a white man who initially trusts the system being hunted by police who brutalise and threaten him carries a different meaning to the same story about a dark-skinned Asian man. like again. not necessarily a better one but a different one.
idk this is a long musing. I'm interested in having a conversation about this and like I said last time - if you think I'm being shitty I do want to be told and to explore why within the limits of your comfort with taking about it. I'm not trying to say This Is So I'm just wanting to get my own head straight.

If ur still doing the 100 followers thing, well I challenge YOU with deciphering Lithuania.
ok anon thank you so much for asking this question because i have in fact recently fallen in love with lithuania, because they are such an interesting character! (also hhhh im so sorry for how late this is)
Gender
As you may have noticed, I usually use they/them pronouns to refer to Lithuania. I hc them as being nonbinary and using he/they pronouns, though I personally prefer to use they rather than he in that case because. Idk what pronouns you use. But in my experience it’s really hard to get people to call you ‘they’ when you go by ‘he/they’ or ‘she/they’ or smth like that. Though I don't imagine any of the nations are very attached to their “birth gender” (are nations born???), lithuania is one of those who is a bit less attached. They’re just sort of there, in terms of gender. In my headcanons i also think this has something to do with religion, as lithuania was one of the last european countries to convert to Christianity- just because so much of gender as we know it comes from christianity and what people in the 16th and 17th centuries considered a ‘good’ christian. Thats not to say that there are no gender roles in other religions, but that the way westerners typically conceptualize gender has quite a lot to do with the religious conflicts occurring within christianity. Like you can trace the ideas behind the nuclear family archetype back to the protestant reformation. Additionally, I hc them as being Jewish, which further distances them from the western christian gender roles (though that’s not why i hc them as jewish! More on that later). Finally, i just like myself some trans/nb characters. There’s so few popular trans hcs and that makes me kinda sad ya know? Welcome to the trans agenda its just me projecting onto all my faves
Mental Health
Okay, so, i think it’s pretty well known that lithuania’s mental health is wack. They’re often characterised as being a very anxious person, but i think the ways in which they’re anxious is super interesting. For one, they are extremely conflict averse and like to avoid it by being a sort of people pleaser. It’s a sort of defense mechanism, because nobody can hate you if you do whatever they say. Like, if you let people be shitty to you, they won’t hate you for your personality. This is clearly flawed logic because then people are still going to be shitty to you, but. It makes sense to liet. In their mind, it’s okay to let people hurt if your reason is sound enough- Because if they’re not super emotionally engaged in a relationship that’s unhealthy for them, then they can’t get hurt, right? Of course, they can. A good example of this is their relationship with Russia. I think tolvydas sees compliance as necessary there, in order to avoid being hurt. The thing is…compliance is also hurting them, even if they see it as ‘worth it.’ To them, behaving in a submissive way is a survival tactic. A really bad one, but a survival tactic nonetheless.
This also plays into their tendency to be self-martyring. I think Tolvydas is very good at fighting, and all around a really awesome warrior (strong aragorn energy), which makes them think that they need to be the one to save everyone. Hero complex, sort of. This, coupled with their almost maternal care for Latvia and Estonia, makes them feel like they have a sort of weight-of-the-world on their shoulders. Though Estonia and Latvia do look up to them a lot, Tolvydas can sometimes fail to realise that they are also their own people and can fight their own battles. He feels a sort of obligation to protect them due to their shared culture and languages as The Baltic Trio, though it doesn’t go much further than a sense of obligation. They spent most of their youth fighting, to the extent that that’s most of what Tolvydas personally knows as ‘life,’ but they never actually got to know the other two Baltics very well until the modern day. They have to protect, have to be a caregiver, but they don’t actually know super well the things they’re trying to protect. It’s both a sense of obligation to protect as well as the sense that this is all they’re good at and as long as they’re fighting for a morally just cause, that’ll do.
I think something that would expose this flaw would be when they were first taken over by the Russian Empire in the 1790s, they were pretty miserable about a lot of things- Like the loss of all their territory and the sudden statelessness of their people- but a big one would’ve been the loss of Poland. This isn’t meant to be super shippy, but you know. They were united into one kingdom, and they had been for centuries, so i don’t imagine it was an easy separation. Though this is more up for debate where real people are concerned, these characters were essentially a big part of each other, ya know? Regardless of how much Lithuania actually likes Poland, they’re still a part of each other and that separation will undoubtedly be painful. Anyway, all that is to say that this separation was at the forefront of their mind during the beginning of the 19th century, and they let it sort of prevent them from taking care of the other Baltics. The issue with that is that they still considered themself to be protecting Estonia and Latvia, even though, in reality, nobody was. Also in reality, Lithuania was making themself out to be the worst off, and were generally sort of annoying to be around at this point in time. Their whole woe-is-me attitude wasn’t fun, and they were hypocritical in that they saw themself as being a better friend than they actually were. They still see themself as being a great friend, and though it’s improved in recent years, they’re still sort of. Flighty, i guess, where friendship is concerned. There was also a lot of annoyance by the other baltics about them being so self-martyring- Tolvydas was Ivan’s favorite, after all (that’s not necessarily a good thing, but. He was softer on them in certain ways). Anyway, I guess the big takeaway of this paragraph is that Liet often lets their self perception cloud the way they act in relationships.
Much of the stuff I’ve mentioned so far is a result of them having quite a lot of PTSD. I think Lithuania’s character tends to be explored through a few common lenses, those being the medieval vibes of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and through being oppressed by the Russian Empire/Soviet Union. Not to say that there’s not a lot of other content about them, but this is what I see most often. I think that all the nations have some form of PTSD, but with Lithuania it’s very pronounced, and it’s made clear that a lot of their tendencies are a result of past trauma- Like the need to take care of others. This is likely originating with their childhood, as they grew up in a very violent environment where their survival was never guaranteed (survivor’s guilt much?) and violence was just the way of things. This is where the need to protect comes from. There used to be several more Baltic nations, though you could argue that now there’s only two- Lithuania and Latvia, as Estonia does not speak a Baltic language and would really like to be considered Nordic.
Finally, Lithuania is also an interesting character where forgiveness is concerned. I think their sense of morality is very black and white, so some people (Feliks) will be easily forgiven where others (Ivan) will not. In reality, I think it would definitely be valid for Tolvydas to hate both of them, yet they don't- Because they decided that Feliks was a friend and Ivan was not. Both Feliks and Ivan care very deeply about them, but neither treats Tolvydas in a very good way. Of course, I’m aware that the situation in the Russian Empire/USSR and the Commonwealth were very different, but I’m talking about these three dudes and their relationships with each other beyond the lens of politics. Because Feliks tried to be their friend in a way that didn’t hurt them tremendously, and because. Look at them, Feliks isn’t 5’4 and can’t hurt you. They’re not an intimidating person and they’re not incredibly powerful like Ivan is. Though that’s not all of it- Feliks’ feelings for Tolvydas are definitely a purer, more selfless type of love than what Ivan feels for them- it makes it harder for Tolvydas to hold a grudge against them. Whereas for Ivan, their relationship was about control. He needed to control them as a way of expressing how he felt about them. He represents a lot of what Tolvydas fought against in their youth, so of course they hate him. Of course, I don’t think they like holding grudges. They want to be able to care for everyone, because they know that everyone deserves to be treated well and cared for and all that. You can't exactly do that if you hold a grudge against someone, so it actually kind of sucks for them when they see someone they hate suffering. It’s a sort of conflict of interest- The caregiving instincts vs the hatred for this person- and they often don’t know what to do in that situation. Usually they wind up helping but not happy about it. They just don’t want to see others suffer, despite the fact that they dislike this person (Russia is of course the exception. They don’t want to help him at all anymore).
Relationship with family
So, this is a bit of an interesting topic. I think the Baltics consider themselves family just because of what they’ve been through together, but they’re not actually blood related. Though they share similar cultures, and languages, they’re just not related. Maybe Lithuania and Latvia are cousins, but yeah. Lithuania sees themself as the head of their little family, as they have the oldest surviving European culture and language. They sometimes get in their head about that, and can act like both a mom friend and a mom who is bad at mom-ing. It’s a sort of self appointed thing, and can be really annoying to the other two. They don’t pay the utmost attention to their fellow Baltics, and are more concerned with physical well being than emotional well being, so, despite establishing themself as a caretaker, do not wind up actually caring for the other Baltics in the ways they need to be cared for.
Fighting style
So, as I’ve mentioned, Lithuania is a talented fighter. They go hard as shit, and can very much kick your ass. I think they prefer to be very technical about how they fight, with something boring like a broadsword as their weapon of choice, but are not afraid to fight dirty. Like rip off an ear with their teeth kind of playing dirty. I think they take fighting very seriously. Though Lithuania as we know it is only about 800 years old, I think Tolvydas is much older. The definition of a nation (a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory, according to the oxford dictionary) does not require there to be a central governing body, so I think it’s quite possible for Lithuania to be well over 2000. Anyway, all that is to say that they didn’t grow up in medieval times, so by the time they’re like. Achieving dominance in Eastern Europe, they’re already very old and well versed in many different styles of fighting. In the modern day, I think they’ve learned more different fighting styles from other parts of the world, but will always fall back on the way they learned how to fight in ancient times.
Religion
So as I mentioned earlier, Lithuania is Jewish in my headcanons (orthodox, specifically. I think they're kinda traditional). I have a couple reasons for this- There has been a historical presence of Ashkenazi Jews in Lithuania, going back to the 13th or 14th century, and this is due to certain legal protections granted to Jewish people under pre-Commonwealth law. They were legally on similar footing to the average free people of Lithuania, and were able to create a slightly more prosperous community than Jews in other areas of Europe. This was also affected by the Black Plague of the 1340s. Orthodox Jews tend to put a high value on cleanliness, and often have two sinks in their houses (my childhood home, for example, had two sinks, and i lived in a majority jewish area). They also happened to be concentrated in Eastern Europe, due to the protections. Because of this, Eastern European Jews have some of the highest sruvival rates for the Black Plague and actually brought up the survival rates of the region as a whole- Though this also resulted in some intense antisemitism, as many Christians blamed Jewish people for the plague even happening, due to their higher survival rates. Despite various expulsions  and the loss of legal rights, the Jewish population remained relatively steady up until world war 2. Jewish people made up about 10% of the total population of Lithuania in 1941, and 45% of the total population of Vilnius. (To put this in perspective, the entire world population is only about 0.2% Jewish). Anyway, all this is to say that it’s not out of the question for Lithuania to be Jewish.
Extras/Fun stuff
Lithuania loves reading, especially the fantasy/fairy tale genre. It makes them nostalgic without the trauma of reading historical fiction.
They’re also very musically gifted, and can play the piano, bass, ukelele, and flute.
They wear docs.
They love hot chocolate.
They remind me of both Aragorn from lotr and Hozier. They’re such a sweet lad.
Bicon who has like 5 people thirsting for them at a given moment but is either oblivious or not looking for a relationship right now.
Here are my fics with lithuania as a main character!
My previous character analyses of lithuania (sorry they’re mostly in shipping contexts, rip) and another good analysis someone else did
My playlist for them
and i think thats it! of course i could always talk more about them, but those are my thoughts for now! thank you so much for the ask, i hope i was able to meet your challenge!

This is completely out of the blue, but I would like to hear your HCs about Durin and Dayel.
hahaha this is because I did the post it note thing, isn’t it? ok buckle up
So! Since I recently did go through the entire tsos for all references of these two, most of this is going to be either 1. overlooked canon or 2. inferences from canon -- also all page notes are for the edition of tsos that is the entire og trilogy bound into one.
ok so, first of all - this was something abt Dayel that I was going to make a separate post about but! it belongs here.
“ ‘Eventine will come,’ Dayel spoke quickly, trying hard to sound cheerful.” (tsos, 353)
So there’s a lot to unpack here. Throughout tsos, we’re reminded that the other members of the party are fond of Dayel in part because he’s the youngest + that they feel protective of him for that reason. What I take from the above quote is not just Dayel’s awareness of this dynamic, but also a degree of...social literacy?...emotional intelligence? I’m uncertain as to the right phrase -  that I don’t really see in the other main characters (except *maybe* Menion who can be decently manipulative if he feels like it)? As in - because of his position as the cheerful one people like, it becomes his role even when the circumstances are pretty grim.
To be a little more coherent (hopefully) I think Dayel is someone who fills silences, is generally upbeat by nature, and is probably the one friend who makes plans and texts first  - but who is also very aware of his position and will step into that role even if he doesn’t really feel up to it. I hope I explained that well lol
Anyway ages! So Dayel is 19. I think he’s the only tsos mcs to have an exact age - though this is being taken from the fact that he is 1. old enough to get married (but doesn’t look it) and 2. once specifically referred to as not being 20 yet. Ig he could be 18? But I’m more inclined to believe he’s 19 with a baby face. I generally think of Durin as the oldest of the non-boomers which gives us this layout for ages -
Dayel & Lynliss (19) -[couple years]-> Shea & Flick (arguing over whether a month is enough of an age difference to validate a “respect your elders”* claim) -> Menion (Brooks can’t decide if he’s the same age as Shea [said in tsos] or older [said in twos] -[a couple more years]-> Durin.
(We have no indicator of where Shirl falls on this. I usually assume her to be the second oldest besides Durin)
*I use “respect your elders” on a friend who’s a week younger than me, so I’m inclined to agree with whichever is the elder on this one.
Speaking of quotes I can’t find the page of but distinctly remember reading (sometimes too many tabs is a bad thing) I’m pretty sure Dayel is described as the company member who’s physically the smallest?** Which, given how many times Shea and Flick are described as small, this means he must be tiny.
I’m not saying trans Dayel but I’m also not not saying trans Dayel.
[Shea voice] Dayel walk next to me i want to look tall for once
**on pg. 142 he’s described as frail (possibly in comparison to Menion?) but I’m certain I remember reading him being described as the smallest
For Durin - I noticed he’s the company member who really stands out as being on the lookout for everyone else? For example, when they’re having the serpent miniboss fight in the hall of kings - Flick and Hendel are knocked out. For a while (ok...half of page 163. but a lot happens in that half page) Durin is the only one who notices Hendel is down (he had been previously helping Dayel and Shea evacuate Flick) but he also doubles back and tries to rescue him - something that he is literally not strong enough to do (only Balinor showing up and carrying Hendel out saves them).
The one exception to this is that there’s a part (pg. 189) where Flick has been missing for a while and only Dayel notices. But you know we all have off days.
Durin also gets injured the most out of all of them - but also appears to be the first one to jump to fight. Granted, he’s always engaging in defensive violence, but it’s still an interesting note that when everyone present is on guard, it’s usually Durin who’s noted as acting first (and when it’s not Durin, it’s usually Menion). Examples include - in Paranor against the gnomes (pg.183), probably when chasing Stemin (pg. 350)***, and being the only one between himself, Balinor, and Dayel to have been noted to prepare to attack (pg. 258).
***I say “probably” because Brooks says “Durin and Dayel” which I usually take to mean “Durin with Dayel following” - though it could very well be because he prefers that to how “Dayel and Durin” sounds
This is getting really long so I’m gonna do one more and then wrap it up. Ik I posted “Durin gay” a couple days ago as a meme but tbh Durin and Flick are the two tsos characters that I really read as gay men (which, fwiw, is projection on my part but hey who cares)****. Ik you wrote in your Flick post that you read him as being seeming largely uninterested in romance, which I agree with! I just happen to read him as gay but deeply closeted - which goes hand in hand w my assumption that Vale culture is what we would recognize as deeply conservative. In contrast, I hc Durin as the one who, due to different cultural circumstances, is able to be out. Which is why I’m on the Durin and Flick should be friends train.
****And just to clarify no I don’t ship them. It just doesn’t work imo
I have two pieces of textual “evidence” for this - one is this whole thing here that I posted a couple days ago and the other is. god. it’s this part early on (pg. 114) -
“ ‘Nice shooting, Menion,’ Durin approved at his shoulder...” and at some point I read that be like a  “wow 😳 what nice shoulders you have 😳 you doing anything after this quest” moment. I have not been able to get that read of this line out of my head and I am so sorry for inflicting it on the 3 other people in this fandom but there it is.
I’m gonna wrap things up here lmaooo this got wayyy too long

Hey, related to the trans hc.
Magnus who obviously isn't going to out anyone, but tries his best to let Raphael know that Maia is going to be 100% fine with hin coming out, except that Magnus usually comforts and reassures him, so Raphael feels Magnus is being supportive in a weird way, but gets to the conclusion that is just Magnus Comfort™ as usual. Meanwhile Maia is like, you're my best tipper but I'm concern how much time you're here, you aren't even drinking much ? Just tipping and saying nice things about Raphael ?? Like I know he's great and he wouldn't be an asshole if I told him I just still feel nervous, you know ?
And magnus is like yes I know, and you should come out on your own time <3
But in the end after they come out to each other Maia and Raphael are just like Ooooh, so he knew
!!!!!!! what an excellent headcanon!!!! it makes sense too because obviously magnus is going to know about raphael, but it also checks out that he’d know about maia because magnus is kind of.... known among trans downworlders. he’s not flaunting his trans status around but he’s done enough for the community that it’s common knowledge among trans downworlders. so it would make sense for maia to tell him! or maybe maia tells luke and luke comes to magnus because he knows about it. but i do like the idea that maia tells him, even if it’s just a “it was great, you know, to know that there were other trans downworlders, too” and magnus smiles and there’s that understanding between them and she tries to give him a drink on the house and he refuses
so anyway yeah by the time maia and raphael are getting closer he can feel the Nervous Vibes coming off his boy, but again he’s not gonna out anyone like you said, so he just... gently nudges and tells him that he should tell her, that he’s sure it wouldn’t be bad. and raphael sighs and is like “i know, i know, i’m being stupid, i should trust her” and he pats his head like “not stupid, my boy. it’s normal to want to protect yourself. don’t feel guilty about it” and raphael gives him a small smile
also picturing that magnus goes to the hunter’s moon and subtly nudges the subject in that direction and maia kind of tells him everything about her worries without meaning to and she’s kind of embarrassed but magnus is just... trustworthy and one of the closest people she has to talk about this. of course she has simon as well (trans simon!) but also simon is 100% guaranteed to run his mouth and she didn’t feel quite comfortable to bring it up with him yet. but with magnus there’s that slight distance plus kinda dad vibes and she finds herself telling him about her worries
and again magnus is not going to out anyone but he also tries to nudge her to tell him you know, i know raphael, he’s more than accepting :) and she’s like “i know, i know, i guess a part of me just... feels nervous. because it’s him, and we’re getting close, and it’s always when we’re growing close...” looking all sad at her glass and magnus gives her a small smile and tells her that it’s also only when they were getting close that she got her best friends and family. it can go either way, what matters is the person, and he knows what kind of person raphael is gonna be - and he thinks that she knows, too
and she smiles and pours him some more and says “yeah, i guess so. you know, you’re my only customer that provides me free therapy” and as if on cue someone sits down and asks her for “something strong” and she’s like uh oh, i’ll be back in a second. by the time she’s back magnus is gone and there’s a big tip for her on the counter, and god damn it, making that one on the house was the least she could do!
anyway eventually she does come out to raphael (i tend to think she would be first, because she gets anxious and wants to get it over with, even as a means to protect herself, while raphael is... private and slow and takes time to actually go through with stuff like this. not that maia is more trusting, just, different ways of dealing with the same fears) and raphael is like “did... magnus know about this?” and she’s like “yes, why?” a little defensive because what does that have to do with anything, and he’s like “oh, because he’s been a little pushier than usual for me to come out to you” and she raises an eyebrow like “i already knew you’re ace” and he’s like “yeah, but i’m trans, too” and she blinks and is like. oh! that... also explains a few things about my conversation with magnus
and they both laugh and it’s resolved pretty soon and it’s great. magnus tries to be very subtle next time he asks raphael if he’s already talked to maia and hides his smile behind his teacup when raphael says that yes, and by the way, they both know that magnus knew

this is so typical of me but for the ask game, could you do edmund and/or the lear sisters?
YES I absolutely can, this is as much my brand as yours. Sorry for the delay in posting, I had a change of plans yesterday :)
EDMUND
Sexuality Headcanon: Only really attracted to women but if it was somehow useful to sleep with a man he probably would and probably wouldn’t mind it too much. Also, I HC him as relying way too much on sex to fulfill his need for affection. Also also, a sub, I will die on that hill. Gender Headcanon: Male in the canon but I have a huge soft spot for female!Edmund too so either works for me. Probably cis but I’ve seen some people post about trans Edmund so maybe? A ship I have with said character: Edmund/Goneril is my TRASH because it’s such a mess but it could be so good. Started off as kind of a joke/speculation for one particular fic and now I have a lot of feelings about it. A BROTP I have with said character: Edmund and Edgar!! Let! Them! Be Brothers! Especiallly pre-canon :((( Also not sure exactly what the Edmund and Cornwall dynamic is, possibly it falls under BROTP but it’s definitely interesting. A NOTP I have with said character: I’ve seen like one fic of Edgar/Edmund as a romantic pairing and. No. Just stop. A random headcanon: Has gorgeous handwriting. He’s obviously great at forgery, but I imagine his own writing is just lovely. As opposed to Edgar, who probably has a very messy scrawl. General Opinion over said character: Actual love of my life, more than is justified. He’s objectively terrible, but he’s also so sympathetic and so self-aware that it makes me love him even more. Imho, hottest character in the canon.
GONERIL
Sexuality Headcanon: I guess straight in canon? See I really like the idea of lesbian Goneril in the female!Edmund AU and I feel like...she probably has some sort of equivalent hangups around sex in the canon-verse too, but she clearly likes men so...not entirely sure? At the very least she’s definitely not at ALL attracted to Albany. Gender Headcanon: Definitely a cis woman, since that’s tied to a lot of her experiences and especially how Lear treats her. A ship I have with said character: As I said before, Edmund/Goneril is terrible but also great and has a special place in my heart. A BROTP I have with said character: Her and Regan before Shit Went Down. It was probably always a little rocky, but that scene where Regan takes her hand and they stand up against Lear together? Excellent. A NOTP I have with said character: She and Albany just have an objectively terrible relationship that makes both of them miserable. I don’t think that’s controversial, but yeah, definitely a bad ship. A random headcanon: Less of a headcanon and more a question but: where did she get that poison that she used on Regan? Unlike in a lot of plays, there’s no mention of that. I wonder if she had it for awhile, planning it for something, maybe Albany, maybe herself, maybe something entirely different. General Opinion over said character: She used to be my least favourite sister and boy was I wrong! I find her very weirdly sympathetic and I think she’s a deeply sad and desperate person with a uniquely tragic position in the fucked up world of that play, but also, a very cool evil lady.
REGAN
Sexuality Headcanon: I think of her as bi; don’t really have textual evidence for that but oh well. Definitely into some WEIRD SHIT as far as BDSM (emphasis on the S) taken wayyyyyyy too far. Gender Headcanon: Probably a cis woman, not really anything to suggest otherwise. A ship I have with said character: Regan/Cornwall is the power couple for the ages! So equal in their dynamics, so passionate, so fun and evil and tragic in a weird way at the end. A BROTP I have with said character: As I said, her and Goneril! Also her scene with Oswald is very...interesting idk, I haven’t thought about it much but I wonder if they ever had a weird sort of friendship. A NOTP I have with said character: Regan/Edmund isn’t a NOTP exactly because it’s definitely canon and definitely interesting but I think it’s just bad for both of them and not what they actually want. A random headcanon: Sometimes in production she’s dressed in every Dark Evil Villain Outfits, but I actually imagine her wearing very colourful, ostentatious clothing a lot of the time. Probably very quick to change out of her mourning clothes too... General Opinion over said character: The least sympathetic sister, but also by far the coolest. PEAK villain stanning material, and one of Shakespeare’s female villains who’s allowed to get most in-touch with her brutality in a super fascinating way.
CORDELIA
Sexuality Headcanon: Probably straight cause I’m not sure why she wouldn’t be I guess? Gender Headcanon: Probably a cis woman but in a staging where Cordelia is actually the fool I think it could be really interesting to consider as a pants role/exploration of her gender. Especially in terms of her only being able to get Lear to listen to her while she’s dressed as a boy. Maybe not an actual reflection of her identity, but still much to play with. A ship I have with said character: Ugh it really depends on the AU for her, @princess-of-france has such a great Edmund/Cordelia dynamic in her work, @harry-leroy opened my mind to Edgar/Cordelia too, but I have such a hard time choosing one just for the canon play. But Cordelia and France are adorable in every universe, so I’ll go with that! A BROTP I have with said character: Her and Edgar! I’m on the fence about them romantically but I love the idea of them being close before the play. I would have loved to see one last conversation between them at the end. A NOTP I have with said character: I don’t know that people SHIP this but the Lear/Cordelia as an incestuous relationship discourse is YIKES. A random headcanon: Way wittier than she tends to get credit for. She canonically had some connection with the fool, and I wonder if she had a similar relationship with Lear before everything, able to quietly question him in clever ways without him taking offense. She might not have realized that her defiance in front of everyone would be a step too far. General Opinion over said character: I’ve definitely moved past seeing her as the boring good angelic daughter, thank god. She’s a wonderful character! I talk about her less than the other two mostly because I don’t think I need to be in her defense squad as much, and I love villains, but she’s fantastic.

just read ur latest post w/ the whole “chihiro's gender” & hc thing. you got kinda defensive, sayin the anon was not only tryna argue & - quote - “shame” you 4 having chihiro as a mtf. anon wasn't being agressive or rude, but asking if you - since you hc mtf chihiro - knew why people tend 2 get defensive. btw, yes, that happens. anon even said they were fine with the hc. i hc mtf chihiro, but you didn't seem to understand the question & got upset. [ik u wont answer, mod, but pls chill.]
Tumblr media
“I fail to see where I got defensive. The anon asked ‘why do people think Chihiro is this way, because it’s obviously wrong, and also those people are so mean to everyone else.’ They were arguing. They asked why people felt that way, and Makoto told them. They were saying that there was no evidence, that everyone who felt differently was wrong, and I stand against that. They were being extremely rude, coming to me with their opinions and telling everyone else how wrong they were. They said “when that doesn’t make sense for his character arc” and “when he’s called he/him in canon”. They were arguing. And they asked why people felt that way. Telling them why we feel that way is not arguing.
Anon clearly was not fine with the headcanon since they felt the need to say “why do you think this way when it’s obviously so wrong?” Makoto also said he was fine with any other headcanons about Chihiro. That was not the problem. The anons attitude and need to argue with someone else and tell them that they are wrong was the problem.
I am not doubting that people do get shamed for thinking Chihiro is a cis male. People always feel the need to tell people how wrong their opinions are, it seems. But I have never seen it happen. What I have seen, over and over, is people telling others that they are horrible and transphobic for having the headcanon that Chihiro is trans. That they are going to be blocked, and that they don’t want ‘those kinds people’ following them. I’ve even seen one blog of a trans girl Chihiro get harassed into deleting only a day after creating their blog. And, now, I am seeing people rush to tell me that I’m wrong about my opinions, and then wrong for standing up for them.
I understood the question perfectly. The question was “why do you think this way when it’s obviously so wrong?” They were arguing and trying to make it look innocent. Especially because, I would like to add, Chihiro showed up for only 5 questions and then left forever. She will not be coming back. There is no reason to make an issue out of this.
And as Makoto said, we have absolutely no problem with whatever gender Chihiro wants to be, because it doesn’t make them any better or worse to be male, female, or neither. What I have a problem with is anons feeling the need to go and point out to people how wrong they are.
Please do not ever speak to the mod here. Why would you ask if you know they won’t answer? There’s no reason to make things personal, and that’s the very reason that person doesn’t show up here. There is no need to argue with someone who is not even here.
I don’t think I need to ‘pls chill’. That anon was rude and argumentative. I try to be as professional as possible here, and I’ve bit my tongue about a lot of things. It takes a lot to get me to argue with someone here, genuinely. But they started arguing first.
If you’re going to continue picking fights and making things personal with people behind the scenes and say rude things implying that I’m overreacting and need to ‘chill out’, then I also want you to leave.”

(Happy Birthday! I don't know "when" you will receive this because I live in Italy and idk the time zone) I don't know if you already answered this, but do you have any headcanons of L and/or Matsuda being trans guys?
Hi there, thank you so much for the birthday wishes and sorry for the late response!
I actually never thought about L or Matsuda as trans before receiving this ask, and it’s not something I usually make HCs about myself because I’m cis and I’m still trying to learn about gender stuff myself, and I don’t want to be ignorant about it by mistake or anything like that! But I had a good chat with @translightyagami about it because his trans HCs are always great, and this is what he said (and said that I could share, thx James!):
JAMES’ HCs:
-L probably transitioned after he met Watari and had the money to do so. He’s not super masc but he prefers to wear a packer. Cut his hair crazy short by himself when he was a dysphoric kid, so it grew back in real ugly patches and only just started to look better around when the Kira case started.
-Matsuda seems to me like a trans man who has adopted a lot of unhealthy masculine ideals in order to pass better, and it was a real struggle for him to get on the police force since he hadn’t had gender reassignment surgery yet. A big thing I think about with both Light and any other Japanese trans characters is that stupid sterilization requirement for gender surgery, and that would be a block for Matsuda. But he used his connections within his family to get the police to get him in front of the right, more accepting people (re: Soichiro) and that’s how he got on the police and why he loves and admires Soichiro a lot. He’s definitely looking for good male role models. Soichiro is soft for Matsuda’s struggle because he thinks of Light, who of course is also transgender in this.
MY ADD-ONS:
-I think L kind of gets a kick out of being a cryptic enigma and not giving anyone definite answers about himself, and that he’d find it funny more than anything if people ever acted awkward or confused about his gender. He’s super ambiguous and super confident and certainly isn’t concerned about if people “get” him or not. He just wants to be comfortable and get straight to the point and catch criminals and solve crimes, and that’s about it. He’s really blase and straight forward in canon when talking about sex, and he’s a weird mix of both frank and cryptic whenever his own personal life is the subject of conversation amongst the people that he works with, so I’m pretty certain that would translate over to L’s approach to gender stuff as well.
-What James said about trans people in Japan having to be sterilized and get reassignment surgery before they can legally change their gender on documents really shocked me (apparently LGBT+ rights and acceptance is a lot different in Japan than in Western cultures even now), so I started looking up other stuff about Japanese law, and then stuff about the NPA out of curiosity as well. Something that was really interesting to me when I was looking up articles about this is the requirements that the Japanese officers have when going through their schooling!
Apparently, NPA officer training requires them to:
-Train intensively for 12 months (compared to the avg. 8 weeks American police officers are trained). The curriculum includes an intensive study of Japanese law and practical police subjects such as traffic control and police administration.
-Their physical training stresses the mastery of Martial Arts. To qualify as a police officer, the student must obtain a black belt in Judo or a similar distinction in Kendo. It is felt that in a crowded city Judo is an effective method to disarm a suspect and Kendo, the ancient art of Japanese fencing, builds discipline and character.
-In addition to physical training, courses are given in calligraphy, flower arranging, tea ceremony, poetry writing, and Japanese flute to sensitize a police officer to the artistic side of human nature.
-After one year at a police station, an officer must return to school for four months to improve his skills, and police are expected to continue self-defense courses throughout their careers.
-So adding onto James’ idea that Matsuda might’ve engrained some toxic masculinity due to his trans struggles, I wonder if doing the things like flower arrangement and poetry writing during the police training might’ve been difficult for him at first, because he didn’t want to feel unmasculine in some way? Or maybe it was actually a positive thing for Matsuda because he got to hang out with a bunch of other police officer dudes in class who were all expressing their gentler sides. I definitely agree that he looks up to Soichiro immensely and that it makes a ton of sense that he saw him as an excellent male role model, somebody who is a great balance of strong and authoritative and noble and kind.

What do I mean by “using hetero/cis normativity as evidence” (in this post)? Some examples:
“there’s no reason for that character to be gay/bi/pan/ace/nb/trans/etc” - you all know this one; the idea that there has to be a ‘reason’ for queer identities while there’s no reason required for cishet identities is cishet normativity at work
“that person has only been with people of the opposite* sex so they can’t be [anything but straight]” - aside from the fact that hcs are very welcome to ignore canon altogether, bi, pan and other multigender attractions exist; the character doesn’t necessarily have to be homosexual - BUT ALSO, they CAN be!! compulsory heterosexuality is the feeling that we must perform heterosexuality and therefore most gay people do date people of the ‘opposite’ sex, especially before they realise and/or come out, or while they’re figuring themselves out, & this is sometimes for a long time! This is a very real experience for many homosexual people that is hideously underrated in a media environment that expects gay people to have ~always known~. sometimes gay people want to see that experience represented too!!
“that character isn’t hideously depressed about their body/pronouns/etc, [so they can’t be trans]” - a) while not universally agreed upon, many trans people & groups agree that dysphoria isn’t necessary to be trans, and b) dysphoria isn’t always ‘if I don’t get breasts/a penis I’ll kill myself’; it is often a lot more subtle than that, a discomfort or sense of mismatch between one’s assumed or assigned gender and what one feels. This is not well captured in a media environment which does not handle trans issues or experiences well (to be polite about it)
“that character doesn’t look trans” - bro u gotta know this one. come on. a) we all know they’re being played by cis actors 99.99999999999% of the time don’t be ridiculous b) there are many stages to a physical transition process, c) there’s no one way to ~look trans~, must I go on
“you’re reading too much into it” - HOO BOY this is one of my favourites, bc see, even if we DO provide ~evidence~ for the above things (eg. that a character may have had same sex relationships, or may experience dysphoria), we’re often told that whatever evidence it is, isn’t enough. (and this relies on the default position being “cishet until proven queer” and it’s the critics that get to set the bar for the burden of proof, which in my book, also counts as using cishet normativity as evidence). What do I mean by this??
this character used gender neutral language such as “ex” or “partner”, which suggests they may not only have had relationships only with people of the opposite sex - uh you’re reading too much into it, straight people use gender neutral language all the time, partner is just more mature than girlfriend/boyfriend, exes is just easier to say than ex girlfriends/ex boyfriends, etc etc...
this male-presenting character clearly experiences strong discomfort when being insulted using feminine-coded pronouns, names or traits, perhaps it is because they are trans and are feeling misgendered - uh you’re reading too much into it, it’s clearly because of toxic masculinity, that’s the only option, toxic masculinity is a problem that causes this and therefore it must be that, don’t you even care about toxic masculinity???
this character uses a similar look, line of dialogue, piece of music, etc when interacting with their hetero canon love interest as they do when interacting with a member of the same sex who is also significant to them; could this be romantic coding? - uh you’re reading too much into it, the hetero love interest is romantic coded bc it’s canon not bc it’s hetero, the dialogue/music/etc just means they’re important, do you hate close platonic friendships bc it sure sounds like you do why do the gays always ruin close friendships by reading into everything ugh
this female-presenting character clearly experiences strong discomfort when being insulted using feminine-coded pronouns, names or traits, perhaps it is because they are trans and are feeling misgendered, or are experiencing dysphoria but haven’t realised they’re trans yet - uh you’re reading too much into it, it’s clearly because of sexism I mean who likes being called lady/sweetheart etc etc it’s gotta be sexism or internalised misogyny bc they are problems that cause this kind of behaviour so it must be them in this case there doesn’t need to be some other ridiculous reason bc these are real reasons and real problems don’t you even care...
YOU GET THE IDEA
I’m sick of being expected to provide evidence for lgbt+ headcanons but I’m even more sick of that ~evidence~ being thwarted by cishet normativity, especially when the people who wield it think they’re being super clever and/or insightful, or get defensive or even aggressive. It’s not necessary, it’s not fun, and it’s kinda not the point of headcanons at all

ticky tacky chapter 1
Summary:
"Yeah, elf kids go to elf practice. Humans don't do that?"
"Uh... no?"
"Huh. No wonder you're all disasters. We can't really say anything, though. We're both dropouts."
(WHY WEREN'T YOU AT ELF PRACTICE?)
little boxes
Notes: (transposed from AO3)
title from "little boxes" specifically the version by walk off the earth
I want to thank the taz fic writers discord for the wonderful ideas. also, specifically @anonymousalchemist for the original idea
Chapter notes:
this is full of personal hcs and stuff that will (probably) eventually be touched on in a future fic I have planned. then again, this might also be just for fun lol.
What you need to know going in:
Taako is also trans and the twins realize at about five/six years old.
They switch names right before going into school for the first time.
The twins have heterochromia (one eye green, the other silver).
Taako, as a child, is very quiet, empathetic. As he gets older, he closes himself off and puts up walls and defenses and becomes distant and aloof. He learns how to put on a persona in front of other people.

Every day, for about six hours, Taako and Lup are sent off to play nice with other elf children. The school has a long and prestigious name, something that glorifies the elven race, surely, but it’s too long to remember, so the twins just call it “elf practice.” (Their aunt always tries to get them to stop, to call it by its actual name, to give it the respect it undoubtedly deserves, but they never listen.) Elf practice, at the entry stages, consists mostly of proper meditation techniques and how to walk and speak Elvish correctly.
The other children like the twins well enough, but the adults more or less ignore them. Some of the instructors call them cursed (“Twins are bad luck. They killed their mother.” “Their eyes are bewitched!” “Unnatural cretins.”) and others keep them totally separated from other kids. Some are scared of them, so visibly unsettled by the two of them that Taako’s cried more than once after being on the receiving end of a terrified scream.
Classes are fairly uninteresting for the most part. Lup has trouble sitting still most of the time, too energized to clear her mind or work through mental exercises. Taako has less trouble with sitting still but clearing his head is an issue. He wants to think about this or that and can't force himself to think about nothing. He ends up falling asleep during these lessons, more often than not, and wakes up to scoldings from the instructors and laughter from his sister.
The two are almost unnaturally skilled at speaking proper Elvish. They pick it up like they were born speaking it, and they excel in both writing and reading. Taako loves the way it looks and Lup loves the way it sounds. Taako wants to eventually learn more languages. Languages are fun. (He tells their instructors and they crinkle their upturned noses and glare at him. “Why would you want to know anything but Elvish?” they ask him, disdain on their voices.)
They both fail rather spectacularly at controlling their twitchy ears. There's an entire class devoted to schooling an elf's emotions enough that they can resist the natural movement their ears want to make. The instructors give the children stimulants—mostly sounds at first, some loud, some quiet, some maybe by voices, some made by objects—and try to tame their ears into a neutral position.
They hate it, natch.
Lup has too much energy to calm herself or her emotions, too wound up at any one point to still her hands or feet or ears. Taako is too much into his own head to notice the movements of his ears. He hates the loud sounds and flinches at the booming crashes and high-pitched shrieks. Lup's ears are always pricked in interest and Taako's flatten more often than not.
They're not very good students.
“Dears,” their aunt says to them one day after elf practice, “why don't you try to do better?”
“We do try!” Lup insists, her too-big ears twitching at her honesty. “It's just so hard!”
“It's not that hard, babies.” Their aunt crouches to their level and gives them both a stern look. “You just have to try.”
Taako's ears flatten. “It's hard to focus,” he murmurs, clutching at Lup's brightly colored sundress. “And they yell at us.”
“We don't like it when they yell at us, Auntie! They've made Koko cry before!” Lup is full of righteous fury and Taako pulls a little insistently at her dress. She settles with a huff. “It's not fun there.”
“‘Cept the Elvish,” Taako adds, ears lifting, smiling a little.
“Koko's like. The Best at Elvish, Auntie!” Lup flashes their aunt the biggest grin and tugs Taako in front of her. “He's real good at words!”
Their aunt just sighs indulgently at them and stands up. “That’s good. You need to be passionate about something.” She considers them for a moment before smiling gently. “I have an idea. Follow me into the kitchen.”
From that point on, their aunt teaches them all about cooking, promising to teach them new techniques and recipes if they promise to do their very best at elf practice (except she doesn’t call it that—she uses the long, fancy name Lup and Taako can’t remember.)
They like these lessons much more than elf practice.

(ml anon from before) i... have terrible memory i think i sent the ask really early in the morning? i saw in your tags on /post/143178901844/ on your blog that you have a list or something? and i live for their friendship honestly.
don’t worry about your memory you’re fine !!  my memory isn’t the best either, or i wouldn’t be asking you which list it was pfft !!
i seem to have misplaced the original list, but i can recall most of the hcs and relationship stuff from it and tell you about it here !  i’ll try to keep it brief if for the sake of not clogging dash, but if you’d like to discuss anything in depth or ramble about it more with me, then never be afraid to hmu via im or on discord !  my discord username is enbyfreckled#8097
anyways, onto the hcs !!
adrien and chloe bonded originally over being trans. i’d like to think that they both met very young on their days of surgery, and were both very nervous to be going through with this but extremely happy about it as well
the mayor at first didn’t like the idea of his child being a girl, but then grows to accept and love his daughter as who she is. this is part of the reason he’s such a pushover when she’s older
in contrast, adrien’s parents fully supported their son, and this is how he was first brought into modeling. they loved him so much and wanted him to feel confident in himself and his identity, so they’d do this for him. they were all a very happy, loving family until adrien’s mom...you get the idea
after surgery, chloe and adrien were inseparable. they sought comfort in each other and trusted one another more than they had ever trusted anyone
once adrien’s mom...left, to put it in a less depressing terminology also bc i lowkey forget her spoilers since it’s been forever since i’ve talked about this aklsdjflanljdlk things began to drift apart as he was homeschooled and adrien was...basically kept in isolation from the outside world
as adrien was taken from chloe, chloe lost some of her support in her identity, and began to question herself. she wanted others to see her as undoubtedly a girl, so she began to wear lots of makeup and her trademark yellow cardigan, so she’d be noticed as well as being shown as a girl
over time, this became a comfort for her, and she began to love the attention she received. however, her mood began to change and she became more harsh and quick to lash out at people, which is her defense as she’s still extremely insecure
she began to use sabrina as a replacement for adrien, but over time used her as more of a crutch and person
chloe longs to be like ladybug, a heroine who is loved and adored by everyone, but doesn’t know how to be her. she tries her hardest to live up to being like her, but she never actually accomplishes such, which is extremely frustrating to her
when adrien comes to school, chloe is thrilled beyond belief and becomes extremely possessive, clinging to him constantly and pushing others that want to talk with/be with him away (coughs marinette)
as such, adrien gets quite uncomfortable with how possessive she acts, and becomes saddened when he thinks back to the chloe he used to know and be best friends with. the happy girl full of love that was a bit shy but still growing, the one that he loved and trusted. this new chloe, the pushy, shovey, clingy chloe, makes him wonder what happened to her that made her lose herself
meanwhile chloe can’t figure out what happened to adrien that made him become wary of her. she can’t figure out what she’s doing wrong and why he’s not running into her arms and leaping at the opportunity to hang out again. and this truly crushes her
