#this is a Victor Frankenstein hate account

Note
Victor "processing the horrors" made me lol. He deserves his trauma.
At the risk of pissing off the Victor hate club.
No he doesn't.
You can hold him accountable for being arrogant and self-absorbed but he did not deserve to have his family slaughtered and to be haunted by the creature until he literally died in a frozen wasteland far away from his home.
Misguided as he was Victor was still a young college kid who was often very ill. There is no way he could possibly have handled the monster coming to life and I feel like when it comes to Victor Frankenstein the fandom tends to be a little unreasonable in their expectations of him.
He's an 18th century, sickly, sheltered kid probably in his late teens or early twenties. Even if he had known his experiments would work I don't think it's at all realistic to expect him to be prepared for the literal stuff of nightmares that resulted from his efforts.
Yeah, Victor made unfortunate choices but Adam did not make better ones and it's a bit of a sticking point with me that the fandom often treats Adam like he did nothing wrong while they demonize Victor relentlessly.

(for the ask game from a few days ago) could you do Victor for 2, 12, 15 and 24
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
i had to sit and think because this one was so hard to narrow down. on a surface level i find all sorts of things about him endearing from his mannerisms to his speech patterns, but i think the thing that got me hooked on victor as a character was how emotionally demonstrative he is, particularly for a male protagonist. this also extends generally to his love for nature, for his friends, and his siblings (disregarding the incestuous implications of his relationship with elizabeth...)
i think this was only intensified for me when i started delving into frankenstein academic essays and analysis and then, by extension, the frankenstein fandom, and found that en masse it was people criticizing victor for just what interested me to him in the first place: being emotional, and therefore somehow melodramatic, overreacting, self-centered, egotistical, etc. it was this kind of climate of victor-hate that pushed me to make a tumblr account in the first place. someone had to be the sole victor defender in this barren wasteland
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
this is silly and probably not the serious answer you were looking for but like 2 years ago a dear friend of mine and i were joking about how you could catch victor frankenstein in a mouse trap and ever since then his assigned fursona in my head has been a mouse:
Tumblr media
15. What's your favorite ship for this character?
by far its waltonstein (robert x victor). im aware clervalstein is vastly more popular, and while im charmed by it in-canon i dont find most depictions of it to my taste. i don't see their relationship as wholly reciprocated–one-sided on walton's end–which is part of the reason why i like their dynamic so much: its established that walton romanticizes the unobtainable, chases the unknown, and that's why he hangs all his hopes on things he cannot feasibly reach. first becoming a famous poet and going down with the greats, then sailing to find the northern passage despite being an inexperienced captain, all the while hoping for this impossibly idealistic image of a companion who would be perfectly tailored to his interests and manners, and then, against all reason, he finds this in victor, wherein victor becomes an extension of this habit, who is dying and too hung up in the past and on martyring himself, because everyone who has grown close to him has been hurt for it, so he cannot love again, or at least in the way walton wants. yet victor still has a reciprocated interest and finds a friend in him, even shares the same sentiment of the importance of friendship, but like he says no man can "be to him as clerval was." its very much wrong place/time but the right person.
ive said this before but i think, too, that if victor had recovered and lived than walton may fall a little less in love with victor. their relationship was founded on their dynamic of sick/caretaker, and beyond that, victor would have already exhausted his story, so there's no air of mystery around him anymore–nothing for walton to glorify or romanticize. ultimately i think even if they had the best of intentions and loved each other, they could not have a healthy or fully mutual relationship, and part of the appeal to me is this tragedy!
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
im drawing a bit of a blank on this one because no other character encompasses just what victor Is to me, but theres a whole host of victor-esque characters i could name because he is the literal foundation for the mad scientist archetype. if i was pressed i think id say geoffrey tempest from sorrows of satan by marie corelli (beyond his blatant misogny), and i remember some parts of emil sinclairs early narration in demian by herman hesse reminded me of victor. lucifer/satan from paradise lost also, particuarly the bit where he says he cannot enjoy the beauty of earth for the suffering of his fall, but that almost feels like a cop-out answer.
lastly–and this one is completely unfounded–itd have to be double dee from EEnE.

Decided to doodle how I imagined some of the characters of Frankenstein to look.
Also check out my art account for actual art if you like! @livyamelarts
Victor's face is kind of blurry bc I had given him glasses, decided I hated them, and took them away, but they left their mark on his face. He deserves it though lol
I hate Victor and Elizabeth tbh. They're good characters! But Frankenstein puts the Vic(e) in Victor and Elizabeth is just the 1800s 'perfect girl' trope (and also incest, ew). I really love Clerval. He's so innocent and deserved better. Although the whole India thing ... is very much a product of its life time. I forgive it bc it was just a couple lines and had no bearing in the plot or his character except that he was in England arranging travel. He could have just as easily wanted to study abroad in India or smth and went to England for that reason.

Amnesia protags' gothic horror buddies
First of all Victor Frankenstein should ABSOLUTELY join the Amnesia protags' book club. He fits RIGHT in with them. He and Daniel I think should actually not be allowed to talk to each other lol they'd get along too well with their views on morality and accountability, but we're gonna have Victor be Oswald's buddy, they can build cool guys together!
Justine and Dorian Grey. Do I even need to say? They'd HATE each other at first, but then they'd both realize, "Wait a second. Do your plans fit with my plans?? Can we just work together?? Oh cool!" and then be ABSOLUTE besties, just going around to fancy parties judging everybody and ruining/killing whoever they feel like, it'd be amazing
Now Daniel's buddy is gonna be Dr. Jekyll, because they both share experiencing "base urges not fit for a proper English gentleman" and giving in to them in various ways. They also both created a "different version" of themself but for VERY different reasons, I still think they'd really get along. Also with the alchemy!! Daniel can learn more cool potions from him!! And they are both sort of ready to redeemish themselves at the end? With an Agrippa Ending Daniel at least. They'll help each other figure it out
Tasi is so in with the Drac Attack Pack (don't mind my extremely outdated reference lol). She and the Harkers in particular would really get along, she and Mina are so alike in a lot of ways but she and Jonathan can bond over being hardcore vengeance machines on behalf of their spouse. Maybe Amari and Little Quincey can get to know each other as well. Van Helsing can probably find a way to cure her of being a Harvester too ooo

In almost all verses, Adam will at least start out believing that, despite his fractured memories, he is the same soul who died on the gallows and was hauled away by Victor Frankenstein. I write that as true in my mainverse, but for others, it depends on the nature of the world.
Adam will take any information he has on magic & science into account, so if/when he learns in my Dragon Age verse that the evidence strongly suggests that he's likely a spirit or demon, he'll accept that that's probably true, regardless of how he feels.
In worlds where the dead do sometimes come back via magic, he may think of his creation as essentially a deliberately mangled resurrection, where Victor wanted something "better" than most ordinary mortals. He may still love/hate his "maker" as a cruel father, but if he does, he'll come closer to understanding why that also horrifies him.

His name is not Adam.
My silly frankenstein post got 10k 🥳 I'm breaking my silence on all the shitty takes I had to see in my notes the past year. I said the creature doesn't have an actual name in canon and loads of ppl have come into my notes to say "UM actually he called himself Adam?? His name is ADAM?!" And I get the desire to have an actual name for him an let him choose it himself but I really don't think y'all got the point of those passages. Or you've just adopted that bc you saw someone else say it.
The passage people are referring to is "i ought to be thy Adam", or, more in context,
"Remember, that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed."
We learn later that he is basing this idea on Paradise Lost which was one of the first things he read and mistook for an historical account. He then goes into more detail about his feelings about it:
"It moved every feeling of wonder and awe, that the picture of an omnipotent God warring with his creatures was capable of existing. I often referred the several situations, as their similarity struck me, to my own."
He sees himself in Adam, yeah! When he calls himself Victor's Adam he's still saying that he should be to Victor what Adam was to God, instead of literally calling himself Adam, but okay. I get where you're coming from. But alas, the passage is not done:
"Like Adam, I was apparently united by no link to any other being in existence; but his state was far different from mine in every other respect. He had come forth from the hands of God a perfect creature, happy and prosperous, guarded by the especial care of his Creator; he was allowed to converse with and aquire knowledge from beings of a superior nature: but I was wretched, helpless, and alone. Many times I considered Satan as the fitter emblem of my condition; for often, like him, when I viewed the bliss of my protectors, the bitter gall of envy rose within me."
He initially relates to Adam because they were both created by someone as entirely new beings, but as the story continues he finds himself relating more to Satan instead because the were both outcasts, shunned by their creators and suffering for it. Even in the very first quote he says "I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel"
So even tho he draws similarities between his and Adam's situation, he does not really see himself in him by the end. Their similarities just make it more painfully obvious how different they are.
"God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance."
But even then, he does not really see himself in Satan either:
"Satan had his companions, fellow-devils, to admire and encourage him; but I am solitary and abhorred."
He relates to Adam because they are both alone, but Adam is loved where he is not. And he relates to Satan because they are both hated, but Satan has company in his misery where he has not. In the end, I think the grief lies in the fact that he very different from both of them and ultimately cannot find anyone who is like him.

Some questionable actions of Augustijn Lodewijk Theodoor Eduart Reinier in no particular order
I feel like it's very common for people to go "my oc is such a disaster, they're such a mess, they're such a shithead" and then that oc never does anything, so here's my essay on why Gussy is an asshole until the main plot, where he finally starts understanding what's wrong with him and what to do about it
Was a pickpocket to pay for his drug habit through high school and college, hated both the habit and the stealing but unfortunately, his addiction didn't care what he felt about the whole thing
Similarly, would befriend fellow rich people in Harvard, go to their house parties, and nick valuables to pawn. Regardless how you feel about Harvard people, he was still using them, forming emotional bonds based on lies so he could steal their shit. They thought he was a friend to confide in, and he was betraying that trust.
Married his childhood friend Lotte when he returned from China. Lotte had always loved him and had just left an abusive marriage, and he wanted to feel better about himself, so he married her to be the husband she deserved. Problem; he's gay. And never actually loved her like that.
Failed to understand why she was so upset when she found out. He wasn't cheating, and he was taking care of her and treating her very well. Perfect husband, if not for the lying and using her. And he didn't get that being lied to like that is traumatizing and humiliating
Accepted a promotion in the military that he really didn't deserve, that was due to go to Isadora, actually. Failed to realize why she was upset. This caused a schism between them but while Isadora got over it the promotion itself, she never got over that he didn't get why that was a problem
Was generally terrible to his stepmother, largely out of unresolved trauma with his biological mother, who was severely mentally ill after her own Catholic upbringing.
Joined the military to redeem himself, thinking that the military was A Good Thing, full of Honor and Glory. Bad start dude
Ended up committing war crimes, being another cog in the war industry. Such crimes include; hostage taking, attacking civilians, firing upon medics, killing a surrendered combatant, and pillaging. All done under orders. Cool reason, still FUCKING AWFUL.
Again, the cannibal thing. Justifiable, sure, I guess, but still Oh Good God.
Various actions under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, such as General Nuisancery, the aforementioned theft, paranoid aggression, trespassing and destruction of private property, and multiple accounts of harassing wildlife over rights to particularly bountiful dumpsters.
Slept with people morally questionable to sleep with. Yknow. Cops. Homophobes. People who you should look at and go "nope, not doing anything with that"
Would give sexual favors in exchange for food. Understandable? Sure. But at some point it's prostitution, and that's fine, but that exchange rate is fucked. A BJ is not equivalent to a Big Mac, large fry, and fountain drink. You're underselling yourself
Pushed his religion onto other people...not trying to convert, just bringing up God and such frequently, usually when its not the fucking time or not the person to talk religion with.
Have said before, read a lot of classic lit and poetry and shit like Protestant musing on the human condition. Now he talks like Victor Fucking Frankenstein, and he intentionally brings up obscure references or concepts, hoping that he gets to explain it to the other person. Maybe the worst thing about him. Wretched.

On that topic anyways. Thy creature propaganda time except i lovingly tear into it. Spoilers below teehee
I still have no idea why MazM completely removed the subplot between justine and the creature when its canonical in this edition of Frankenstein that william is dead and justine was framed for it. The murder the creature carried out. ????? They just never bring that up???? And it almost feels like they have justine there for like. Name recognition. Someone at team MazM felt rlly bad for her ig.
Her boss "Not Guilty" has red strings around her neck which i feel is a really interesting nod to how Justine was executed in the original book. Like mazm reads the books before making the games they say so in a qna. So its not as if they dont know. So like. wahts going on . even the early access acknowledged the creature killed william when justine runs off and cries at the end. Did they not have enough time to write it out???? Were they like shit we cant fix thjs shes gonna hate creature forever oh lawd oh gawd. Also like wouldnt creature recognize justine??? The woman it framed by putting a locket in her pocket????
Like i honestly think thy creature couldve avoided this problem (they would unfortunately have to get rid of the moral dilemma surroundinh the creature killing a child) would be to set the story before it even killed anyone. But iirc mazm said thy creature is like a midquel to Frankenstein, answering the question of what the creature did in between the time of it chasing victor. It honestly looked like in the demo traliers and shit that it was chasing the actual victor and not his nepesona. But then in the final version the payoff is just so...
Im not against a nepe victor, if done right. I think we as an audienve did suspect "victor" to be a nepe instead. But theres no payoff because the creature doesnt find any catharsis or any real answers. Victor the nepe brings up an interesting moral dilemma about what makes a human, but considering theres other plotlines that hadnt been touched, it feels a bit weak. The real Victor is there as a shadow of a character. Which yeah can be done right but it just isnt here BECAUSE, the victor in this version is a far nicer victor than book vic. He helps justine escape he took action. Even if he didnt hold himself fully accountable, the existence of his nepe being the concept of regret??? Hes lost so much of his memories had been spiraling downwards. Hes far far more sympathetic. This makes creature look way fucking worse.
In the first traliers from early 2021, the creature says something like "even after all this, youve shown to me you arent worthy of my humility", implying it met irl victor and realized he was a piece of shit. I think the only thing that makes final version victor look worse os the fact all his diff test subjects wanted to die after he made them and he had no second thoughts about it. But like. Thats kinda it. I still want noah to beat the shit outta him though lollll
THEY ALSO DROPPED THE BRIDE PLOTLINE???? WHICH SUCKS. they rlly said the real bride was the friends we made along the way. BOOOOOO

JULY READING RECAP!!!
1. frankenstein - mary shelly
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
whilst reading this novel i kept a small note card to jot down my thoughts, which are the following:
1. Shelly’s ‘Frankenstein’ discusses the whole “nature v. nurture” debate. As the creature was abandoned from the time of its animation and had to fend for itself while facing discrimination/prejudice, it is likely the root of its behaviour. If it wasn’t left alone, it may’ve continued to love as strongly as it did before the various negative experiences.
2. People love to shift blame. Once Victor discovers the actions of the creature, he rarely takes accountability for his actions. Yes, he regrets creating the monster, but he does not reflect on his abandonment of them nor the hateful comments made - rarely does he feel remorse for them.
3. What is it to be human? Throughout the novel there is discussion of the characteristics that define humanity and seperate them from animals/creatures. Things such as appreciation of the seemingly insignificant to utter extravagance, or the ability to sympathise and communicate emotion.
4. Everyone wants to feel loved. Love is seen as a motivator for all of the characters, whether it be to drive them to reach an end goal, or to stay alive. When there is a lack of love or a longing for it, a change can be seen in the characters.
2. no longer human - osamu dazai
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
No Longer Human is a novel that delves into the ways in which people who are seen as “different” often become ostracised and labeled as anything but human, and how they often face society alone.
It explores the influence of religion and the patriarchy on individuals and the way they treat others - especially how men treat women. Furthermore, women are written as stupid and clingy, which reflects both the protagonist and the beliefs of the era that the novel is set in.
Overall, I’m glad that I finally got around to reading ‘No Longer Human’. It’s take on society and the way it depicts it is very interesting and still very relevant.
3. The Tea Dragon Society and The Yea Dragon Festival - Kay O’neal
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
the art style!!!
the colour palette!!!
the characters!!!
omg i love this so much. it was such a wholesome read and i’m looking forward to smashing out the next two books!
this was so wholesome. the way that the character are written and some of the messages sitting the tea dragon festival are so beautiful.
i thought it was great that the author incorporated ASL too! my country used AusLan, but any sign rep it rad.
4. I Love This Part - Tilly Walden
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
no thoughts just vibes.

Do you even clone bro?
On July 5th, 1996 the first cloned animal, a sheep named Dolly (named after the actress Dolly Parton), was born. Less than a decade later, on December 27th, 2002, the first human clone was born, a girl named Eve. Cloning has always been a controversial topic, and raising the stakes from animals to humans intensified the controversy. Experts on the topic raised concerns on the safety and ethics of cloning human beings, while other more fringe scientists swore on the positive possibilities of cloning. But who is right? Should we continue pursuing this legendary technology? Or do its downsides outweigh whatever promised benefits its stark believers champion so proudly?
One of the advantages of pursuing cloning is its medical applications. It could allow for massive advances in our understanding of genetics and help heal the injured. Research in new ways to fight disease would also be greatly benefitted by the use of cloning. Another benefit of cloning would be the ability to curate and code the next generation’s genetic information. Doing this would allow us to create super geniuses and world class athletes. Any desirable trait would be within humanities’ grasp! Alas, as wonderful as these promises are, they are ultimately empty when one stops to consider the drawbacks. For one, cloning is highly risky; mutations alone would make cloning non-viable. There would be far too great a chance of creating a devastating health deficiency in the clone, causing the clone to have issues, but also possibly passing that health issue on to offspring if they ever have children. And all of that doesn’t even take into account multiple generations of clones, all operating with an increasingly shrinking gene pool. There are also societal changes that need to be kept in mind, like how people would react to there being a new generation of clones. With societies’ history of hate and discrimination against those who are different, it would be very likely that clones would become a targeted group of people. Another thing that must be considered is how the law would view and treat clones. This is especially pertinent as DNA evidence would become more unreliable, with there being the inevitability that clones will commit crimes. There are just too many variables that cannot be definitively solved, too much risk for not just the clones but for the people around them. But there is still the most important reason why cloning should not be practiced or pursued.
Eugenics is the process of improving the human race through selective gene editing. It has been used throughout history to justify the oppression of the weak and certain minority groups. Examples of this are the Nazi’s holocaust, and compulsory sterilization in the US. Eugenics is luckily now largely viewed as outdated and completely immoral. One of the reasons that led up to this was its constant abuse to further a prejudiced agenda. Groups like the aforementioned Nazis could use the pursuit of societal purity to rationalize to the world their evil acts. The traits targeted by eugenicists were also completely arbitrary, being entirely at the whims of the “scientist’s'' biases. Because of these reasons the history of eugenics has rightfully left a bad taste in the mouth of the world, and it is no wonder that cloning is so feared, as it is highly connected to modern eugenics. Allowing cloning would give eugenicists an easy blueprint to work off of, which would open the door to many dangerous and unethical possibilities.
One tool used as a cautionary tale against eugenics is Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. Victor Frankenstein’s tragic story serves to show the dangers of tampering with the natural order of life. Many aspiring cloner’s or eugenicist’s ambitions parallel those of Victor, wanting to improve and create life— to play God—but Victor's ambition would be his downfall, like Icarus he flew too close to the sun and burned up. He was reckless, creating his monster without thought of the consequences. This too is paralleled with how people are wanting to make clones without considering the ramifications. Eventually the repercussions of Victor's actions caught up to him, leaving him and his entire family dead. The cloners will share in Victor's fate of falling victim to hubris. However, it will not be them who will suffer, it will be the innocent beings that they have so carelessly created. It will be the clones who will bear the burden of consequence, like the creature having to live their entire lives with severe, and possibly life threatening, health complications.

no when i took ap lit, we read macbeth and frankenstein at the same time and the comparisons were..... i don't strongly hate fictional characters usually but i hate victor frankenstein with a passion.
anon im making out with u /j
someone in my class sympathizes with him on account of it sounding like the man had a nervous breakdown at the knowledge of what he did and tbh like. i get it, i understand it, but i still hate victor because the man could have just... made the creation a mate, removed the uterus (there is no way that he didn't know what a uterus was!! he was a med student!! we've known vague shit abt the uterus since 1300s and there were definitely discoveries between then and the 17th century including people realizing that the clitoris exists and disproves the idea that women don't take pleasure in conception), and bam they would have gone off and been fine.
anyway fuck victor, me and my homies all hate victor

Bound to a Rock and an Eagle - 1
Chapter 1
No. 1: A little out of the ordinary
Adverse effects | Unconventional restraints | “This wasn’t supposed to happen”
Read on AO3
“I do not know what the custom of the English may be, but it is the custom of the Irish to hate villains.” These words echoed in Victor’s mind as the town magistrate and a large group of townsfolk led him to the room containing the body of the man he was accused of murdering in a most villanous manner.
He had no doubt in his mind that the accusations were, at least in part, true.
While it was not his own fingerprints he would see blackened into the man’s neck, he had unleashed the creature responsible, he had crafted the very hands that had wrung the life from the poor unsuspecting victim, and he did feel guilt at that.
He was in a foreign country, far from his home, family and friends; however, having conversed with the inhabitants of the island he had been working upon before setting out, he was confident they would corroborate his story and be able to clear his name of any ill deeds. His priority was to clear his name quickly in order to reunite with his dearest Henry in Perth and travel home to ensure the safety of his family and Elizabeth and then make a plan to destroy the monstrous thing he had created.
He was thus calm and composed until the moment the sheet was pulled back, exposing the body of Henry Clerval.
It seemed to Frankenstein like time itself had stopped. He felt his heart beat slow and his face pale. The rest of the room became a blur and his eyes drifted over the lifeless form of his love, blinking away the mist of tears. “This wasn’t supposed to happen,” he whispered.
Had Clerval come to meet him? He was supposed to be in India, heading back to London, not yet this far returned to him. How cruel his fortune and how unjust, Henry was the gentlest soul and the least deserving of this fate. The bitter guilt bubbled from deep within him and ate at the edges of his conscience as he desperately tried to maintain his composure. Chatter from around the room echoed in the back of his mind as his mouth became bone dry and the room seemed to sway but he couldn’t take his eyes off the man before him.
The accounts of the fishermen and townsfolk had been correct, there was no sign of violence aside from the black marks of fingers on his neck, Victor knew that if inspected closely, the hands would prove unnaturally large.
Victor gasped for breath before throwing himself on the body. “Have my murderous machinations deprived you also, my dearest Henry, of life? Two I have already destroyed; other victims await their destiny; but you, Clerval, my friend, my benefactor—” he sobbed in his native tongue.
The townsfolk, unaware of what he was saying or the reasons that elicited such a strong reaction, pried Victor off Henry’s body and carried him from the room in convulsions.
