hello friends! 🩵 happy new year! i hope 2024 is good to you!
another year gone! last year, when i made a post like this, it was all mushy and i was all sentimental, so i'll try to not be as mushy this time.
i started out pretty strong last year, i was determined to keep up with certain things, but as you might've seen... i did not do that well 😅 my mental health went kind of haywire after spring break, when i didn't have my laptop for a week and i didn't make as many sets as i had hoped. but i'm doing better now and i'm trying to get back into the swing of things. my laptop was also dying a lot more frequently. it would crash, not connect to the internet, and photoshop would sometimes randomly quit and i would lose all my work. so it was difficult for me to stay motivated when i was afraid one or all of those things would happen.
however, over my winter break from work (that was much needed), i got a new computer and i'm feeling super motivated to get shit done! and i am feeling better mentally. even though i was sick for 5 of the 15 days i was off... which pissed me off to no end! i did manage to make at least 20 gifsets during my break, which is 20 more sets than i had before break. i'm trying to be kinder to myself about "not keeping up" and with some silly motivational stickers, i think i'm getting better at being okay with what i can do 🩵
i wanna thank some ppl and some networks for keeping me sane throughout the year. no particular order, just alphabetical. i love and appreciate each and every one of you! even if we don't talk as often as we used to, i still love you a whole lot 🩵

gifmaker / cc wrapped 2023!

it was really fun to recap this, but damn, I hate my work lol anyways, sorry
here's my top 10:
v's bday post: it seems that i should start with this one, this was so challenging for myself. it was the first time making a gfx and it came out okay (i guess?). earlier this year i set a goal for myself that in 13 years (yes 13 lol) of making gifs i would do a blending/gfx for the first time and here it is. happy that i reach that goal at least.
3D mv set: this set was a turning point for me. when i created this blog, my goal was to post at least one set per week or every 3 days of my biases in order (as my url). but then i started to see people's reactions and it was so positive with this set, i kind of wanted to give in for good and return to this life as a tumblr gifmaker for bangtan.
this jimin fancam set: at this point, i think it's one of my bestest works in terms of colouring. i'm really happy w these.
vicnic highlights: this set doesn't have anything so extraordinary about it, apart from the fact that i stopped to cry a few times cuz i was so emotional seeing tae and jimin... god. but i like the lights (wich is not my merit lmao).
golden album preview: i admit, this one i'm proud of. proud of my brain for thinking on that dynamics, proud of my colouring and proud how i managed these gifs.
standing next to you: i was in peace w photshop that day. get really inspired by that mv i guess. like this colouring a lot, i still use this psd for some other gifsets of SNTY, so yeah it's pretty good :)
golden jacket shoot: this gifset... i have conflicting feelings. it took me a long time to make this one, it took a few days actually and there are gifs in it that I love, others not so much.
mcountdown: i guess this is my fave of jungkook. and it was the first to reach 800 notes lol. so yeah, i like that one :)
gcf in budapest: well... this set was difficult. as i said in those tags, i've changed everything for this and it turned out pretty well (i guess? lol)
ytc in busan: last but not least, my fave of myself this far. it holds my biggest notes but it is def not for that, i was really happy colouring these and it turned out great. so yeah, these are my favourite.

My question is, and I'm sorry if you have already answered something like this before: what are your fav Iceman HCs?

Ice is Russian and Jewish
This one came to me* pretty simply, because I got there by looking up the roots of Kazansky as a surname, mostly for a throwaway line in Lightning Strikes Twice. (If you're wondering why it takes me so long to finish a story, that is the reason. I spent two and a half hours writing yesterday, and a solid hour of it was research.) I've done a little bit with it, but @boasamishipper has really been the champion of this headcanon, and she's done a lot of work developing it.
It's difficult for me to believe that, given the political landscape when Top Gun OG was made and the way we're meant to see Ice initially, that giving him a Russian last name was not a purposeful decision. The year before, Rocky IV was a major success, breaking box office records worldwide. Rocky's opponent in the film is Russian Ivan Drago:
Does this look familiar to anybody?
Russia and Russians were bad guys a lot during this time period. The Cold War, which had started after World War II, was still going on. Maverick is our protagonist, and he embodies traits that have been considered uniquely American since the 18th century: Being the best, being a rebel who does things his own way no matter what The Establishment says, pulling one's self up by the bootstraps to become extraordinary, etc. And initially, Ice is positioned as Maverick's foil. He is self-disciplined, self-contained, and believes in collectivism and responsibility to the group over everything. To anyone bothered by the Red Scare, that could definitely be read as communist. I think that giving Ice a Russian last name and these qualities isn't to paint him as the bad guy, but rather to get the audience to feel unsure about him. Maverick asks, "What's your problem, Kazansky?" and the audience is meant to think, "Yeah, what is his problem?"
(I've gone a little off track, but I don't expect everyone who follows this blog to have a critical understanding of the political climate in America in the 1980s.) But what does this mean for Ice as a person? It means that he grew up in America during the Cold War as someone with a Russian last name, at the very least. It's conspicuous. He definitely got called a Commie at school. And if (as I like to believe) he is close to his heritage, especially if it's recent (like he's a third generation American rather than a twelfth), it creates an interesting ambivalence. Like, my last name is German, but it's so far removed from me that it doesn't mean anything to me as a person. It's not part of my culture or identity. I don't consider myself German. I don't have that ambivalence. If Ice considers himself Russian, if that's part of his life and identity, that is difficult during the time period in which he grew up, and it's going to change things about his character. People are going to talk shit about Russians, and there are people who are going to question his allegiances, and he's going to have to balance that while being proud of his identity and his culture. I like the world it creates for him. I like him mentally cursing in Russian whenever Maverick is especially Maverick-y. I like him being offered a beer and wrinkling his nose at that American piss water (@victimofthemusic I love you forever for writing that).
Okay, I've talked way too much about Russian Iceman without getting into Jewish Iceman, so I'm just going to say: Yes. Also. It just makes sense to me, and I love all the headcanons and work @boasamishipper especially has created (I would protect Rachel Kazansky with my life), and I want more of it. All of it. Gimme.
*I don't mean to imply that I originated the headcanon; I'm just saying that is how I, personally, first started thinking about it.
Ice Has (a) Sister(s)
I've seen only children ask questions about this, but yes, there are totally vibes that speak to whether you have siblings, what genders they are, what the birth order is, etc. Ice is way too patient, good at sharing, and willing to play a supporting role to be an only child. He also screams sisters to me because he is capable of emotional regulation, sensitive to other people's emotions (I want you to think of him watching Maverick storm off the tarmac after the hop with Sundown), and values the collective over the individual. In general, when boys have brothers, they spend at least the first 20 years of their lives in constant competition. Everything is a challenge. Everything is a target. Ice is certainly driven, and he likes to win, but the amount of emphasis he puts on working as a team and helping each other suggests that his own desire to succeed is not the most important thing to him. Brothers also do not talk to each other. Sisters value open communication and group cohesion. (They've done studies on this. I'm not just making this up.)
And I like the thought that he has support. Ice has kind of a hard road to walk, and the thought that he has (a) supportive sister(s) there to talk to and to help him and to make sure he doesn't get away with any shit is lovely.
Ice is Smart AF
This is not a huge leap from canon, because we already know he's the best of the best and that he got into a competitive university, and that you have to be able to understand a lot of math and science and do it in your head at Mach 2 to be a fighter pilot. But Ice strikes me as the smartest guy in the room. The scene I keep coming back to is the one in the TAC trailer. Here's Ice:
He's not really paying attention. And I don't think it's because he's apathetic. It looks to me (because this was me) that he's bored because he's already figured out the problem, he already understands what's being taught, and he just has to sit there until everyone else catches up. And he's relaxed about it; he's used to it. He's probably been in this situation hundreds of times before. I talk about this more in this post, but that's the gist.
Ice is an August Leo with Capricorn Rising
I know a lot of people use Val Kilmer's birthday for Ice, and that is fine. You're totally valid. I just cannot. He's too fiery and bold, too sunny and fiercely loyal (that lion has teeth, and they use them to protect the people they love the most) once that Iceman mask slips down. I can have my little zodiac headcanons, as a treat.

I had even more fun doing this set because I finally found a way to make his skin color on my coloring not too yellowish. Like I don't want his skin color to be closer to his hair color and make it look one dimensional (if that makes sense XD). I really suck at yellow and green colorings so I always try not to deviate too much from the original. But I am really proud of the result for this set if I do say so myself. Hehe.
And that Margarette set!! OMG!! Thank you so much for noticing!! It wasn't that obvious but I am glad someone aware that they are nonbinary noticed what I did. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

I've identified as ace for about 5 years but for me I don't feel proud about it? I want to...
I'm trans and also ID as bi, so people don't really get how I can be bi and ace... So I don't make a big deal about my asexuality and even when I'm talking about my identity, or anyone is. My asexuality never comes up.
I don't know if you can relate to this at all really but my question is:
How did you come to accept your asexuality? Was it a struggle for you? And do you have any advice for someone that's shunned that part of themself for so long they've no idea how to even think of being proud of it?

Oooooh. Hm. Well this may or may not be helpful, but here we go:
I am currently only functioning with the one label. "Asexual" is my thing! Yay! I have my flag! I find my flag in gifsets and art and buttons and things! Cool! [points at the greyscale-and-purple] Look, it me!
I might be aromantic as well? But I'm less connected with that label, and not really sure if it fits. It probably does? Might not? idk. Either way, I don't see the aro flag and go "It me!" And tbh, that's totally fine. I can have parts of myself that are exciting and that I connect with and that make me proud. And I can have parts that are like "You know, idk, that's not really a big deal to me. It's part of me, sure, but it doesn't really impact me right now."
You don't have to be OUT AND LOUD AND PROUD of every bit of yourself. Some things can just kinda be there.
I don't really make a Big Deal about my sexuality IRL, either. I wear an ace ring because it makes me happy, and because I've found and been found by a few other aces that way. I have an ace flag pin that I made, because it signals others that I am Part Of The Group, Too. I have never really come out in the dramatic sense, never sat anyone down and explained to them my ace-ness. But if they pick up on the symbols I wear, cool! But nbd if they don't.
Most times, my pride is less prideful and more comfortable. Identifying as ace just makes me feel right in my own head and life and how I relate to the world.
The times when I have felt pride is around other people. Participating in covering this website in rainbows during June makes me feel pride, because I'm doing it alongside others. Talking to other aces and swapping urls of etsy shops that sell black rings makes me feel pride, because I've made that connection and found another person like me.
And I'll tell you what, I have never felt more prideful than I did when a friend of mine came to me and told me that she'd recently started identifying as ace, and it's because she had seen me and just how normal I made it just by talking about it. That by watching me, she realized that what she was feeling was normal and actually pretty cool and not wrong or scary at all.

But yeah. Pride is cool. Being comfortable is better. Pride follows that pretty easily. You probably know this better than I do, with your being trans! When you find something that seems to click your soul into place like a puzzle piece, you feel that moment of "Ahhh.... yes, that's right" like a good warm blanket. Flags can come later.
I can expand on the story later, but basically how I accepted my asexuality (after several months of waffling "am I? no. but am I? i mean. nah. but maybe?") was that I essentially said to myself "I am asexual. And that's pretty cool."

1) What gifset are you most proud of, or the one you feel is the most impressive?
I've already said the set I'm proudest of is this + its expansion, but...I feel like my "most impressive" gifs can call be found in my #design forward tag—all of them are ones I feel showcase actual creative ability in photoshop, which (as you can see as the tag develops) has gotten stronger as I've continued making gifs.
4) What gifset do you think shows off your best coloring?
...honestly? most of them are pretty solid examples of color correction, if I do say so myself 😂 that said—in terms of color matching/recoloring to suit a theme, I'm going to have to go with this this Steve Harrington "King of Scoops" Gifset I made for Aimz 30th birthday challenge. I still think it's one of my prettiest gifsets I've done, and definitely the prettiest of the major-edit ST ones.
10) Tease a gifset you're currently making/planning, or have an idea for.
I haven't started any new gifsets yet, but! my new obsession with Cloud & Tifa (thanks Rebirth) is definitely getting a design-foward set out of me one of these days. They're simply the best.

Accomplishments! Quantum Break fansite in progress!

Well, I removed Tumblr from my phone to prevent me from wasting so much time there, which means I now have nowhere to easily and quickly post my inane thoughts (at least not without feeling like I'm bothering people on Discord or in direct messages, though perhaps that's something I should work on). You know what that means! It means I'm probably going to try posting them here instead.
Thing I want to post about: I'm making a Quantum Break fansite! I've been wanting to do this for ages, and actually started putting together a couple of little graphics for it during the "Quantum Break Appreciation Month" event I ran on Tumblr in April, but I hadn't made much progress on the project since then... until the past few days, anyway, when I started brainstorming what I actually want to do with the site, how I want to lay it out, and so on. Yesterday I put together some CSS for the site, and today I did The Hard Part: I set up a git/GitHub repo for the site, and got the "deploy to neocities" script working for it, so I can easily and quickly make updates to the site in VSCode, then push from there to GitHub to neocities all at once, like I do with my personal site.
Was this an absolute pain to set up? Yes! Somehow, it took me even longer to do it a second time than it did the first! But I did it myself, with a lot of encouragement and rubber duck-ing from a few very helpful people in the Fandom Coders chat. Can't say I'm not proud of myself for that. I would not have had the skill or confidence a year ago to do something like this, especially not all the mucking about I did in the terminal trying to set up the git repo in the first place.
Anyway, I am, to put it mildly, extremely fucking excited to continue working on this site. I've got big plans: first order of business is to get an archive set up of all the Quantum Break fanfic I can get my hands on (and get permission from the authors for). After that, I'm probably going to do the same for fanart and image edits like photosets and gifsets from Tumblr, since the CSS page styling for those will likely be similar (though I expect to run into some attribution problems with older Tumblr posts, what with so many deactivated or moved blogs post-2018). Once that's sorted out, I'm considering looking into the best way to archive fanvids, but honestly that might be put off for a while longer, as video hosting and video players are way out of my skill level currently. Maybe I'll import some of my Quantum Break playlists from my personal site, too? Oh yeah, and at some point down the line, I want to make a searchable wiki with transcripts of all the in-game narrative objects. But "searchable" is probably going to be a stumbling point there, and transcribing takes ages, so this will be last priority, I think.
Wow, that's... a lot, actually! Damn! This is gonna take a while. Not that I mind spending a couple of years poking at a project, obviously. *Gestures at my longfic that took four years to finish...* I've been neck deep in this fandom for over seven years, what's another five or ten? XP
btw, since it's fairly easy to post images on tumblr (compared to dreamwidth, anyway), here's a screenshot of the section that's currently in progress: the fic archive index!
(ignore my filler text... i usually use karkalicious as my lorem ipsum, so at least i'm not committing THAT particular crime here.)
i'm still futzing around a little with the styling (negative margin my beloathed) but it's coming along pretty well! i've already got a branch where i've started... you know, actually adding fic to the site, but i won't merge that into the main and add a link to the front page until the style problems have been fixed (or at least, fixed enough to be easily navigable on mobile, which... is not the case right now, lolrip).

I was trying to avoid making any kind of “year review” posts at any costs but here we are...😂 and I though I'm just gonna scroll quickly but... okay I made 493 gifsets last year (this number...scares me, tbh!!!) how am I supposed to pick 12?:))) so yeah. I'm gonna break a rules here a little haha!
1. January. Favourite one: Dean’s b-day set. Remember when you all were sending me the moments you fell in love with this character? yeah, me too💗. So much love in this one! Most popular one: spn lgbt compilation (yeah! I remembered this all by myself, and making took me 13 hours haha!)
2. February. Most popular one: this cas in 10.09 set (adore the colors here!). Favourite one: my favorite poem in my native language (+my translation)
3. March. Most popular one: apparently, I'm a masocist from 2012 cause it’s Dean/Rose Tyler parallels set
Favourite one: I've started correct quotes series in March, and the first set is 🔥🔥🔥
4. April. Most popular one: “Dean has no taste, clearly” 🤝 “Dude, you can do better” cause yeah... this is gold!!! Favourite one: this poem of mine set. idk i’m SO weak for sun/moon comparisons..... Honorable mentions for dean being manhandled set, dean’s lips set, and yes, dumbass. we. set 😇
5. May. Most popular one: Speight 15.18 commentary set. Favourite one: spn + martial arts set because yeaaaahhh!!! I love bjj!!! and this 4.01/15.18 parallels one too! cause it’s... yeah it hurst in a perfect way.
6. June. Most popular one: dean sleeping set. Favourite one: mary and john correct quotes prequels set. i’m so proud with how good I did with Mary’s words and expressions yeahhh!!! Honourable mentions: dean in red shirts set, dean’s hands set to one of my fics, and Crowley’s 12.23 deleted speech set.
7. July. oh, I guess it’s when my semi hiatus started? Most popular one: angry dean from 13.03 set. Favourite one: immortals fob for jess acklesology set.
8. August. yeah, still on hiatus and posting stuff from my drafts. but misha’s reaction on deancas 100k fics made me come back 😂. Most popular one: I like being on top set. Favourite one: dean reactions to megstiel moments set.

12. December. Most popular one: and Tumblr blocked tags edit cause yeah, this is really funny:))) Favourite one: the snow set for jess acklesology’s celebration. No, you don’t understand.... I found the perfect real show footages (YES THESE ARE NOT just some FILTERS!!!) and spend HOURS to blend it with gifs, for it to look as natural as possible. I mean... have you noticed how snowflakes appear grey against the light, and then, falling down, look white against the dark background????? Yeas, just so you know! THIS IS MY MAGIC OK??? BYE!!!:)))

KP's 2021 SPN Year in Review
Hi everyone, although I've been in the SPN fandom for over 10 years now, I didn't start making fanworks until after I watched S15 this summer. Like many others here in the desticule, I was reactivated like a feral sleeper agent, and went into a creative frenzy to give our beloveds the happiness they deserved.
I am kind of beside myself with just how much I've done in the last 7 months. SPN motivated me to come back to many of the hobbies that I'd left by the wayside in the daily grind. I wrote and drew more this year than I have in the past few years combined. I am much happier and am making more self-improvement because of it.
Even more, I am grateful to have met all of you and made friends on here and on Discord. 💜

Without further ado, here are the highlights of the SPN fanworks I made in 2021, and links to complete lists.

According to my AO3 stats, I posted 60,114 words of SPN fic this year.

Altogether, I wrote 24 fics and 9 poems since I started this summer.
I am most proud of starting a post-canon fix-it series, and also of this line in a Drowley fic about Dean :
Maybe, just maybe, he could have some things for himself.
He didn’t need black eyes to see that anymore.

Amvs:
I got back into video editing for the first time in years and I started a YT channel for my AMVs.
The first Destiel AMV I made was unhinged: Unbirthday (Alice in Wonderland).
My magnum opus is Just One Yesterday. FOBnatural is everything.

Art:
Thanks to Suptober, I drew more this year than the past couple of years combined. Art takes so much time, so an external motivator, and being sorta between jobs at that point in time resulted in 5 drawings that I am really proud of.
Despite external factors, for what it is, in terms of technique and managing to portray the image in my head, my Team Free Will Patronuses crossover art is the one that made me feel the most accomplished, with Tree-topper Cas as a close second.

Meta:
I didn't think I did a lot here, but if you include #spn meta in the tags , then I actually did. I only made one meta op, but my main theory/headcanon I'm going to expand on is what actually happened when Jack absorbed Chuck's powers. Some people say Chuck won and is possessing Jack - I don't think that is quite accurate.
