Playing modded Terraria with my friends has been a horrendous experience. Hell has been flooded with water as a consequence of a failed attempt to contain the crimson, I have six women following me at all times, everyone's weapons are so visually distracting that the Women are not distractions themselves, I have accidentally lured the Moon Lord into our base like seven times, and the single funniest incident so far is this:

Me: "hey game developers, especially AAA ones, are getting laid off en-mass and it's awful for our industry" Gamer: "well I only play INDIE games and the problem with AAA games is they are creatively bankrupt"
Me, slamming my fists on the table like a baby: "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THIS IS ABOUT A BUSINESS PROBLEM PERPETUATED BY CAPITALISM NOT A STATEMENT ON CREATIVE DECISION MAKING"

sooooo fun watching joel and zedaph interact. a hermit whose only experience with breaking minecraft is getting obsessed with the chisels and bits mod for a while VS a hermit who could figure out how to play minecraft with all his limbs restricted ingame and irl. hermit who spends 1/3 of his year doing megabuilds alone and hermit who only goes out of his hole bases to run redstone experiments. awesome

The notes on a recent post got me thinking
By nature, I’m a fan of having 2 beers and meeting strangers at a bar somewhere you’ve never been, which is a thing that we don’t do in 2023 between COVID and being afraid of one another because of the prevalence of gun violence and regular violence and misdirected road rage and the million other little deadly social erosions of the past 10 years or so.
You have got to let go of this idea that any place is a complete nothing-burger full of nothing-people.
You have to.
Its vitally important that you navigate that airport with a stranger in Denver and realize he’s got a tattoo of lyrics from your favorite song. To sing House of the Rising Sun with four people you’ve known for 2 hours (and somehow managed to get into the DNCs private bar with) in the back of an Uber in DC when it’s pissing rain and entirely too cold for your southern blood. It’s important to cooperate and solve problems together and go about it laughing and singing. We are silly little creatures that love a puzzle and a story.
It’s also important to flee a tornado in the back of a shitty red pickup at pride in Oklahoma City and feel the sky break wide-open against the lazy /tick-lok/ /tick-lok/ of the windshield wipers while racing down what once was Rte 66. Its important to know that in the face of creeping fascism that place, of all places, has entire gay neighborhoods. It’s important to wake up in an apartment high, high up in NYC and watch the sun through the buildings and boulevards and watch the glorious great goddamn of that impossible number of people all cooperating and all not. To say Hyoo-stun, that way, on purpose just to get a rise of your born and bred NY friend who does NOT think you’re funny but will make coffee for you.
You need to see a beach full of people cautiously approaching and flinching away from a floating, dead horseshoe crab on Tybee Island, Georgia the way any troupe of wild animals approaches an unknown alien thing. Cows in a field, fish in the ocean flinching from a diver. Little children squealing and wide eyed behind their parents legs. You need to be the person that walks out and picks it up and watches the rest of the crowd creep in to investigate.
I don’t get to travel a lot in the way that most people do, when I go to a place it’s usually because something bad has happened there, but I have found it universally true that most people just want to tell you a story or show you a picture on their phone of the craziest thing they’ve ever seen and they don’t particularly care who you are or what your accent is. Sometimes they do, and those people suck, but those people are not the majority.
Sometimes if you let an old redneck talk he’ll tell you everything you never wanted to know about forensic accounting. Sometimes you’ll meet someone in the middle of the biggest city in the US who knows everything about show pigs. I’ve been to the smallest Kansas towns and the biggest cities in the US and I’ve found none of them were full of nothing.

honestly I think Andrew is just weird. i think his brain just never shuts off, and he's always thinking bizarre thoughts. being off the meds gives him a filter, that's all. it's not like the medication created those weird thoughts for him, it just caused him to voice them. as neil and andrew spend more time alone together, he becomes more comfortable just speaking his thoughts out loud to neil. at first he was like "andrew wtf" but now he's just unphased. see:
andrew: do you think mermaid tails are a gradient or a direct cutoff
neil: what
andrew: at what point when you're eating a mermaid does it stop being sushi and become cannibalism
neil:
anyway andrew is just a little freak and i love him

yknow what really gets me? the fact that we all seem to think that robin doesn’t enjoy jock things. while she’s canonically seen enjoying and cheering at the basketball game in s4 and more importantly, SHE PLAYS SOCCER!!!! she literally says so in s3?!!!! don’t come at me with your “robin is a music nerd ONLY” because she’s so much more than that!! and we should explore soccer player robin in fics bc i’m pretty sure whoever you ship her with will have an aneurysm watching her play soccer

I think where a lot of attempts to do "Dungeons & Dragons-style" settings in alternative milieux go wrong is that they're imitating the explicit trappings of standard D&D settings without putting a whole lot of thought into why those trappings are the way they are. Your standard D&D setting is essentially gonzo sword and sorcery fantasy, and there's a very particular internal logic to it which isn't necessarily going to be obvious examining it in isolation.
For example, one of the more common sword and sorcery fantasy tropes which strongly informs D&D-style settings is the convention that "monsters" are usually something protagonists can talk to (and have stupid arguments with), even – and often especially – when it would be incongruous for them to be so chatty in a more conventional fantasy setting. If you want to carry that over, it's not enough to go "well, D&D settings have chatty dragons, so my setting should have chatty dragons, too"; you need to think carefully about what things qualify as "monsters" in your setting, and what role they play in it.
Basically, what I mean to say is that if you're transposing D&D-style worldbuilding into a steampunk milieu, player characters should definitely be able to talk to the trains.

A fan on a live-stream asks Eddie a question that isn’t ‘who is the best kisser you know’ but it connects enough trains to prompt him to turn around and ask, “Steve, best kisser you know. Go.”
Steve, with zero hesitate: Me
Eddie:
Steve: I’ve kissed a lot of people. A lot of people have said I’m the best.
Eddie:
Steve: You think I’m not?
Eddie: No, I’m not disagreeing with you. You are a great kisser but maybe you’re not as good as you remember. Maybe there’s someone a little better. Someone like, I don’t know. Me?
Steve, scoffing: Oh, who told you that? The five people you’ve kissed in your entire life? Do you know how many people played seven minutes of heaven with me?
Eddie: Yeah, all inexperienced teenagers in the eighties. Just saying, I’m the only person you’ve kissed as an adult.
Steve: Not true! I kissed Argyle during that weird game of spin the bottle and he said I was a great kisser. Checkmate.
Eddie: …I forgot about spin the bottle but I’m great too!
Steve: And yet, Robin’s silence has spoke volumes.
Eddie:
Eddie: Wanna make out?
Steve: Yes, obviously.
