A Fine Line (part 5):

"I shouldn't have put you through that."

Aegon's words reached you softly as you removed your earrings and carefully unpinned your hair. He was standing in the threshold of your bedroom; two empty wine glasses in one hand and a bottle of merlot in the other. His dress shirt was slightly undone at the top and untucked from his slacks. He approached quietly, pouring you both a glass before moving to sit on the edge of the bed.

Leave It Untold:

His life has always been an uphill struggle, and for no reason at all other than he made it that way. He had been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but the taste of it became disgustingly more bitter the older he got. He was a smart guy, he knew his life was meaningless. He knew there was no point. No matter how hard he tried, it was never good enough- he was never good enough; not for his mother, certainly not for his father, and definitely not for you. He knew the moment he saw you that he was going to ruin your life the same way that he knew he wouldn’t make it past the age of thirty. It was unintentional, but inevitable.

I pull away and hook a pinky finger around hers. “Promise?” “Promise.”

She flicks out her pink, heart-shaped sunglasses and settles it on top of my head. “There. Those look way better on you.”

A line that is whispered:

She says, “I know.” Quietly. So quietly I almost can’t hear her. I say, “When you make a promise, you’re supposed to keep it.”

A line that hurts:

She grips me tighter. I can tell it’s taking all her strength because her hands are shaking. “We’re close to the border now. Just a day’s walk. You can’t cross without a passport, so you find—” She stops to catch her breath. “You get away from where all the people are. You find a part of the fence that has no guards. In the prairies. Or in the woods. There will be cameras, so you need to be fast. Spark through, and run. Just run.” I can’t. The words are about to burst out, burning my throat raw. I can’t.

A line that is shouted:

“We can’t get medicine,” she bursts out, slicing with both hands. “We can’t go to a hospital. We can’t go to a shelter. We have to keep going before I get worse and we are wasting time. Get in the car.”

I’m drafting Suddence still, and here’s the last bit I got:

I smile and imagine this. But it’s not like I’m coming with her. It’s not like I’ll ever see her again after Suddence.

The thought stings, and I don’t know why. Maybe I do want to go with her. Maybe I do want to go to an arcade with her and cheat at every game. For a moment she almost convinced me it was a possibility. Like maybe we could just make a quick detour to her hometown before we go to Suddence.

But I can’t. Too risky, says Marisa’s voice in my head. Too risky, and she’s right.

So before my imagination spirals out of control, I stamp it all out.
