Thinking, thinking about this part. It implies that Dai could do something to not get attacked by Kelpie. For me it sounds like Dai has some magic, apocalypse related powers here but they don’t understand how they work. And putting @ellie-the-awesome-11 and @bookofmac theories about Dai being a storyteller, narrator, bard, what if he is capable of changing some parts of the story? But the price for averting one danger is something worse happening. So in the hypothetical situation Dai saves himself from Kelpie but Perry is torn to pieces by dogs. You can’t have a story without danger or tragedy, someone has to get hurt or die, so the plot could go on.

so interesting to me how there's this idea in "the cabinet of dr. caligari" that the hierarchy of power is determined by who gets to create a spectacle, who gets to look, and who is looked at. we, the audience, are caught up in the anticipation and suspense as caligari opens the cabinet- the title of the movie refers to that vehicle of both spectacle and confinement. our attention is directed towards every single horrified expression jane makes; everyone seeks to possess her in some way or another. the entire story is framed by francis' own perspective- how he sees things, although his autonomy is taken away once the perspective of the film is reframed. one of the plot points of the film is that cesare has been objectified to the point where he's literally replaced with a doll of himself- a physical object- and nobody can tell the difference.
