The coffee shop is eerily tranquil today. There aren’t many customers.
Only a few people linger at the tables near the windows and a single person stands in line.
The only loud noise comes from your phone pressed to your ear as Seulgi screams and yells at you.
You definitely should have waited until you entered the break room, because you’re afraid Seulgi’s voice is loud enough to hear.
“You promised me you would talk to him!”
You close the door with a push of your palm.
“I know, I’m going to.” You sigh and sit down at the table. “I just don’t know when exactly.” You sound sheepish, a worried crease appearing between your brows.
"Did he text you at all?”
“No. Why would he? I literally kicked him out of my place.”
Seulgi groans at your reminder. “Tell me why you did that again?”
“Seulgi,” you whine. You need her advice. She had already done the scolding part days ago.
“I know, I know – I'm sorry,” she replies, softer now – less accusing.
You fidget with your fingers. “Should I text him?”
“No, that’s not a good approach,” she dismisses.
“At least it’s something,” you retort. You could send him a short message. Though you’re not sure what it would contain. Hi, I'm sorry for making you leave, can we pls pls pls talk I miss you. You grimace. Maybe a call would be more suitable.
“Y/n,” Seulgi says, snapping you out of your thoughts. “You know what’s more important than figuring out how to approach a conversation?” She pauses, but you stay silent. “Being ready to tell him the truth.”
You told Seulgi of your feelings for Jungkook the day after he confessed to you. She sat on your couch and watched you intently after you announced in a flustered tone I have to tell you something, right after you had talked about what had happened the day before.
You waited for a reaction, but none came. She had a vacant expression. “I know,” she said then, shrugging nonchalantly. “You think you were being secretive about it?” A puzzled look spread across her face.
You felt your cheeks grow hot.
“Are you?” Seulgi presses.
“Yes. I think I am.”
“Good, because this isn’t gonna fix itself,” she says. “Not unless you finally have the courage to be honest with him.”
She’s right. And even though it’s scary, you have nothing to lose. You have already lost your two favourite people in the world.
“And now go and talk to him.”
“What?” Seulgi can’t possibly mean that.
"Go to his place and have a conversation with him.” As if it were that easy.
“I’m at work, Seulgi.”
“You’re taking a break right now,” she counters.
“Yeah, but-”
“No buts,” she interjects. “Just go and get your friend back. Or future boyfriend, whatever.” Seulgi is unwavering. But your doubts and hesitations slowly start to fade. “I can’t keep watching you be sad. It breaks my heart,” she adds, in a much smaller voice.
“Seulgi,” you pout. She has seen you at your lowest points, and of course you know that she is compassionate, but when you hear her voice, your throat tightens.
“You’re gonna leave now?” she asks.
It’s a bit hectic and far too spontaneous, but her words have planted determination in your mind. But maybe that is exactly what you need. This way you don’t have time to overthink and come up with possible scenarios that make you doubt everything and give you sleepless nights.
“I am.” You take a look at the clock. You still have time left, but it’s definitely not nearly enough for walking to Jungkook’s apartment and talking to him. You have to do this now. If you postpone it to later, you’re not certain if you still have the bravery to do it.
“The next time you call it better be to tell me that Jungkook is your boyfie.”
You ignore her. “I’m gonna hang up now, I don’t have time. And thank you, really, without you I’d probably never do this.”
“That’s what friends are for,” she says warmly. You wish you could hug her.
After the call you leave the break room. There still aren’t a lot of customers and you’re thankful for that.
“Jimin.” You walk up to him. He’s loading cakes into the display case. He gives you a sweet smile.
“Hey, uh – I kinda have something quick to do,” you start, gauging his reaction. “Do you think you could – It’s just something really important and I don’t know if I can do it later and-”
“It’s okay, y/n,” he interrupts, the smile still on display. “I’ll cover for you, no problem. Do what you have to do, there is no rush.”
He doesn’t ask for a reason. He doesn’t ask how long you’ll be away. He doesn’t ask any questions. You would pull him into a hug if you weren’t in such a hurry.
You tug at the tie of your apron at your back and pull it off your body. Jimin reaches out to you and you hand him your black apron.
“Thank you. I promise I’ll be back soon!”
You don’t know the outcome of this, but you will take the initiative and at least try to make things better than they have been the last couple weeks.
You’re a little hopeful, and you have yet to find out if you are foolish for that.
With your heart pounding in your ears, you rush out of the coffee shop.
~
The walk from the coffee shop to Jungkook’s apartment isn’t that long, but it gives you time to question your choice.
You stand in the elevator of Jungkook’s apartment building, wondering whether you should press the button that will take you back down.
Earlier, a guy walked out of the building when you were about to ring Jungkook’s doorbell. You were able to slip into the building without announcing your presence to Jungkook. You feel more comfortable this way, though your hands start feeling clammy.
The elevator stops at Jungkook’s floor. The steps that lead you to his apartment door are uncertain, ready to turn and sprint down the stairs.
But you didn’t come here just to run away. You want things to be good between Jungkook and you.
You take a deep breath and press the doorbell.
A few seconds pass. Then, the door opens.
Jungkook stands in front of you. His long, dark hair is a fluffy and wavy mess on top of his head, adorned with little wispy flyaways around his face. He’s in casual clothes – black sweatpants combined with an oversized white pullover.
He seems startled to see you.
“Hi,” you say, a little breathless.
“Hi.” His usual mellow lilt carries a rare hesitancy.
“Do you have time to talk?” A lump forms in your throat and you swallow it down.
“Yeah, sure.” He makes room for you to enter and closes the door behind you. You change into a pair of slippers and follow Jungkook to the living room.
“Is Nabi sleeping?” You can’t help but ask. You kind of hoped to see her. You missed her and maybe she could’ve eased your nervousness a little.
“I put her down for a nap a while ago.” Jungkook sits down next to you on the couch, a considerable distance between you. He glances at the clock hanging on the wall. “She should be up soon, though.”
When his eyes draw back to you, you feel a little helpless. You remind yourself of what Seulgi told you. This isn’t gonna fix itself.
After sorting the chaos in your head, you say, “I wanted to apologise for being so selfish all the time.”
Jungkook parts his lips to speak, but you continue before he can say anything. “I’ve never fully tried to look at things from your perspective and narrowed my mind to what I thought was the best solution.” You pull your sleeves over your hands. “It shouldn’t have been that way.”
“It’s okay,” Jungkook replies, flashing you a tiny smile that disappears soon after. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”
“I shouldn’t have made you leave. That was heedless and inconsiderate of me,” you admit, biting your lip in guilt. “You opened up to me and I didn’t know what to do. There was a lot in my mind, and I just needed some space for a moment – I'm sorry, truly.” You avert your gaze to the carpet. “I honestly didn’t prepare what to say, I just – I left work because I needed to talk to you.”
“Why do you sacrifice so much for me?”
He insinuates more than leaving work in the middle of your shift.
A string tugs at your heart. Jungkook was honest with you, it’s time to be honest with him too – and maybe to yourself as well. It’s time to acknowledge the feelings you hold for him in a hidden little niche of your heart.
It’s difficult to bare that part of you when you’re so used to hiding it.
“Because I love you.”
You said it. And you mean it. Wholeheartedly so.
You can’t foreshadow his response and what will happen, but you’re glad you said it. The relief that courses through you was worth it.
Jungkook’s stare is intense. You don’t know if it’s the intensity of his stare or what you’ve just confessed, but every single bone inside of you feels ignited. You’re burning from the inside with sheer anxiety darting through you, while Jungkook remains silent.
Your words hang in the air, so simple and yet so daunting.
Jungkook’s pierced eyebrow twitches. He opens his mouth but not a single sound passes his lips.
You don’t blame him. Three days ago you shooed him away after he told you the exact same thing. In retrospect, you deeply regret that decision. But at that moment, you were overwhelmed and needed to be alone. Sort your thoughts. And then talk to him again.
You shift in your seat. “Jungkook.” It’s a soft murmur of his name, a trace of pity and urge creeping in your voice.
The spark leaves Jungkook’s eyes and he casts his gaze away. “It doesn’t change that you made me leave. You still don’t want anything to do with me. Right?”
You shake your head vehemently. But he is still not looking at you, so you say, “That’s not true.” You sit closer to him, fingers curling against the fabric of his sweater on his elbow. “That night was overwhelming for me. I made a mistake when I told you to leave, but I didn’t know what else to do.” Doe eyes lock with yours. You realise how much you missed his glimmering eyes that hold the night sky within them. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t want you back in my life, Jungkook.” His sweater crumples into a tiny ball in your palm. “I missed you.”
His answer is immediate. “I missed you too.”
Your chest feels light. A giddy warmth encloses you like a blanket.
“I’m sorry. For the way I acted,” you say.
“It’s okay. You’ve already apologised.” He looks down at your hand grasping his sweater. You should let go, but even the smallest hint of physical touch feels reassuring.
“I know but I just – I just think we’re equally as responsible for how things have turned out.”
Jungkook nods. “Yeah, definitely.” With a sigh he leans back. His tatted fingers vanish in his dark hair as he cascades through them.
“I really wanna try this. I want to be with you.”
He unclasps your fingers from his sweater and holds your hand. It’s an innocent, small gesture and still, your skin buzzes with delight.
“Y/n.” The way he whispers your name, tender and careful, as if not to break you. “Don’t you realise how much more you deserve?”
Your brows furrow. “But...” You squeeze his hand. “You’re all I’ve ever wanted.” His thumb strokes the back of your hand.
“I promised myself to get over you after we graduated high school,” you tell. “But that clearly never happened.” Looking at both your hands you feel silly for ever thinking you could suppress your feelings for Jungkook.
“High school?” he inquires.
You feel small beneath his sharp gaze. “Well, yeah.” You shrug. “You’re like. Really pretty.” Heat crawls up into your cheek. “And we hung out like 24/7. It was not that hard to fall for you.”
“I mean, same.” The corner of Jungkook’s mouth tilts upwards.
Your lips form a tiny ‘o’. He has feelings for you since high school? It doesn’t make sense. “But you never shut up about how we’re such good friends,” you accuse him. All these years. And you didn’t know.
“Oh, yeah. That was...” He trails off.
“That was what?” You level him with a raised brow.
You see the struggle in Jungkook’s eyes. You don’t want to push him, but there are no more lies between you, no more secrets and untruths. You want only total honesty from now on.
“I thought I wasn’t good enough. That you deserved more.”
You shake your head in denial. “Why would you ever think that?” The years you spent with him as a teenager are full of happy memories. There were no big fights, and you don’t think you ever said or did something that made him feel that way. He’s been your best friend for so long. You love him just the way he is. “Did I ever make you feel like that?”
“Your father once told me not to try to pursue anything more than friends with you,” he explains hesitantly. “That’s why I’ve always talked about being such good friends.”
“He said what.” You’re stunned. What was your dad thinking?
Jungkook pulls your hands to his lap. “He only meant the best for you at the time.” He remains calm but little bubbles of anger prick at your skin.
“I don’t care what he was thinking.” You scowl, lips drawn into an angry pout. “So you’re telling me that if my dad hadn’t said anything, we would’ve-”
“Don’t get mad now,” he interrupts, an amused smile playing at his lips as he tucks an errant strand of hair behind you ear. “Your dad didn’t have any ill intend. I know we could’ve saved us a lot of time and misunderstandings but looks at us. Years later and we’re still in love. It doesn’t matter if in high school or now. It’s the same love. Just - “Jungkook flashes you a cute smile. “I think the only thing that has changed is that I love you even more.”
You bite down your lip. This. This is all you’ve ever wanted.
“Being apart from you was terrible,” you say, scooting closer to him. “I spent so much time thinking about you, you know that?”
He chuckles. “I think I do. You never leave my mind, y/n.” His hand around yours feels strong, protective.
“Never?” You ask tentatively. Looking at him through your lashes.
“No,” he confirms, a subtle, gentle shake of his head. “Never.”
You’re not even that close to him, but your entire body prickles at the proximity of Jungkook. The weeks without him have made you forget how it feels when you’re with him and now your body reacts to it like anticipating the last book of a fantasy series.
You need him closer than this. And it’s almost as if Jungkook can hear your thoughts, because he lets go of your hand and instead pulls you by your waist into his side. His hand lingers at your waist. And you might just feel like your skin is on fire.
“I like this better.” Jungkook’s voice is low, and so so close, it sends shivers down your spine.
“Me too,” you mumble. You have your chin propped up against his arm, looking at him with a small smile. You grow shy beneath his gaze, and you don’t even know why. “I’ve always wanted this.” You clasp your hands around his arm.
“Good,” Jungkook agrees, voice an octave deeper. Oh. More goose bumps. “Because I’ve always dreamt of this too.”
His other hand comes up to your face. He cups your cheek so delicately, the warmth of his palm is a soothing distraction from your racing heart.
Jungkook’s eyes dart between your eyes and lips, a question floating in the air that he is too afraid to ask.
“Jungkook.” It’s a plea, a request a yes, please kiss me and make me forget the world for just a moment.
Jungkook bends down. Your heart thumps against your chest and when you feel the softest hint of his mouth against yours, it stops beating.
The kiss is brief, gentle. A mere brush of your lips. Your eyes flutter open when Jungkook pulls back again, just the tiniest bit. He gives your waist a squeeze. His lips left a glimmer of tingles on your lips, and you ache for more.
“I spent so long waiting for this moment I was worried fate might never let me have you,” he whispers against your lips.
“You have me, Jungkook.” It leaves your mouth like a promise. “I’m here.”
Your hands loop around his neck and you surge forward, pulling Jungkook into another kiss. He moves his lips against yours in a practiced manner, as though you did that every single day of your lives. Like he is the missing piece of your heart to make you whole again.
Jungkook tugs you closer to him. You raise to your knees and throw a leg over Jungkook’s thigh. He follows your movements with his mouth, the softness in the beginning switching into a frantic, messy kiss.
You sit on his thigh, hands diving into his fluffy hair. You pull at some strands when he bites down your lip, moan into his mouth when he pushes you closer at your lower back and you graze over his thigh. With every sweep of his lips, another broken bone of your body mends.
You never want this moment to end.
You didn’t know you needed this so desperately, but now that you’re in Jungkook’s embrace you never want to let him go. Just you two, forever.
But then a sudden cry blares through the apartment.
Jungkook draws back. His forehead is against yours.
You two need a second to come back to the real world. The afterglow clouds your rational thoughts like the night setting after a beautiful summer day.
Your breathing is laboured, so is Jungkook’s. Your hands slide down to his neck and down to his shoulders.
“Nabi woke up from her nap.” His nose scrunches at Nabi’s wailing. He plants a tiny smooch on your lips, lingering close for a chaste moment before he gets you off his thigh.
You think about waiting until he returns with Nabi, but you can’t wait to see her tiny, bubbly form after so long.
Before Jungkook leaves the room, you scramble to your feet and reach for his hand. “I missed her,” you whine and Jungkook leads you to the nursery with a promising squeeze of his hand.
When you follow Jungkook into Nabi’s room, you take tentative steps towards her crib. Nabi is curled up in her little blankets, her round doe eyes shimmering with tears. Instinctually, you coo at her sight. Your heart softens.
“Wanna hold her?” Jungkook asks. His eyes never left you since you entered the room.
You nod way too animatedly – and you think you see a smile spreading across Jungkook’s face out of the corner of your eye.
Ever so gently, you swoop Nabi into your embrace. Her little sobs ring throughout the room and nip straight at your heart. “My baby,” you murmur. You rock her in your arms. “I missed you so, so much.” She is wearing her baby bear romper, the material a fuzzy brown with two little bear ears attached to the hood.
Nabi is a small, fluffy bear and you’ve missed this tiny human so enormously.
Her doe eyes – an exact replication of her dad’s – stare up at you. The cries subside into whimpers, her puffy lips trembling.
“Nabi.” Her name bubbles past your lips in a whisper. You brush your knuckle against her doughy cheek. “Do you remember me?” She blinks through her thin, wet eye lashes. Having her in your arms unfolds a gloomy feeling in your chest. Yes, you are happy to see her again, but how were you able to spend more than two weeks without her?
“Are you crying?” Jungkook suddenly asks, stepping forward.
It’s only then you discern the tears pricking your eyes. “No,” you deny, sniffing a little.
A soft chuckle springs from his chest. Jungkook stands behind you, nuzzling his head to the side of your face. His burly arms envelop your waist. “Don’t cry,” he mutters. He faintly nudges your cheek with his nose. “You’ll never be separated from her again.”
“I wouldn’t survive that.” Your lower lip juts out as you’re in awe with Nabi’s cuteness. She has your heart.
“She wouldn’t either,” Jungkook retorts. His hushed timbre so close to your ear is drawing you back to him. You slowly rest your head against his chest. His voice. You could listen to him talk for hours with no end. “Nabi wouldn’t settle for sleep if she didn’t have some of your clothes in her bed.”
With a quick tilt of your head, you glance up at him. And then your eyes travel to Nabi’s crib. You see something in a lavender colour peeking from underneath Nabi’s blanket. A top you must have left here.
You thought you had successfully managed to restrain your tears, but here you are again, with new tears stinging your eyes.
“You can't just say that.” Dolour cloaks your voice. “It’s gonna make me cry.”
“Sweetheart.” He pecks the crown of your head. “It’s okay now.” There’s a hint of amusement swirling in his tone. But his touches on your body are soft, soothing.
Nabi has gone completely silent in your grasp. You boop her nose. A smile unfurls on your face. So little. A broad smile blossoms on Nabi as a reaction, pudgy cheeks scrunching her twinkling eyes. The absolute sweetest giggle sparks from her. Your heart clenches at the sound.
But then your eyes spot her reddened gums and the faint white outlines of her teeth.
You gasp. “She is growing teeth already?” With a swift whirl of your head, you stare at Jungkook, eyes wide.
“Yeah, and she’s been really fussy about it.”
“Oh my God,” you utter, looking at the little baby in your arms who’s growing up too fast. A subliminal melancholy sets in your tummy. “She was just a tiny baby and now she has teeth?” You ask, appalled.
“Not yet,” Jungkook says. “But it doesn’t matter how fast she grows – she will be my little baby forever.” Nabi’s eyes are drawn to Jungkook as he speaks. “Isn’t that right? Hm?” He leans over your shoulder, squishing her doughy cheek with his fingers. Nabi squeals, another smile displayed on her mouth.
You give Jungkook a kiss on his cheek. His eyes are sparkling just like Nabi’s. Jungkook turns his face to you. “And you,” – his lips brush over the corner of your mouth – “You will be my baby forever too.”
You laugh against his mouth.
“What.” He raises his brows, a pleased expression on his face.
“You’re silly.”
“No, I’m not.” He pulls you closer to him. Your back is flush against his lean body.
“I’m just saying the truth.”
“Oh, yeah?” Playfulness flashes in your eyes.
He gives you a firm nod. “Yeah.” Jungkook gently strokes your hair over your shoulder. Your skin tingles when his digits unintendedly skim over your neck.
“Tell me another then.”
“I love you.” He didn’t let a second pass before answering. “I’m so incredibly in love with you.”
Your heart flutters in your chest. “I love you.”
His loving eyes bore into your soul. No one has ever looked at you the way Jungkook does. Like you are beautiful, a work of art.
A deep warmth of domesticity floats in the air. It’s a vast contrast to how you have been feeling in the past days.
You share a sweet kiss with him, but it gets quickly disrupted by demanding babbling from beneath you.
"Yes, I love you too, missy,” Jungkook says, brushing her thin hair from her forehead. Her brows are deeply furrowed. He gives her a kiss there. Nabi’s trembling pout changes into a beam. “Always needy of attention, huh?”
“Just like her daddy,” you tease, grinning at Jungkook, before you leave the nursery with Nabi.
Jungkook catches your waist in the hallway. “You’re right,” he admits, a smirk curving his lips. He pulls you into his side as he walks you to the kitchen. “That’s why I don’t wanna spent any second of my life apart from you anymore.” Jungkook pecks your forehead.
A shy smile sets on your mouth. You sir down at the dining table and watch Jungkook opening a cupboard with Nabi’s food.
Nabi has found interest in playing with your hair, occasionally tugging at it.
“Not a single second?” you ask mindlessly, eyes focused on Nabi.
“I’m being serious.” He pops open a jar. “Y’know what.” Jungkook turns around to you. “You should move in with me.”
Your head snaps to him.
You search for a hint that tells you that he doesn’t actually mean it, but Jungkook doesn’t budge.
“I mean it,” he confirms.
“I can’t just move out of my apartment like that,” you reason.
Jungkook shrugs. “Just stay with me.”
It sounds so simple from his lips. And maybe it is. Seulgi has already taught you today the simplicity of just acting without overthinking too much beforehand.
“That way Minjun can’t bother you anymore.” Something flashes in Jungkook’s eyes. “Next time I see him I’m gonna break his neck.”
You ponder for a second. “I mean, I spent most of my time here anyway,” you say. “But lets not rush anything.” You don’t want this to be ruined before it has even properly started.
“Of course, baby.” He turns to the counter again. “Only if you want.”
You watch from behind as he prepares Nabi’s food. The contours of his shoulder muscles flexing with his movements conjure butterflies in your tummy. Hm. Maybe you should consider moving in if this is what you’ll get to see every day.
“Waking up next to you for the rest of my life sounds like a dream, honestly,” Jungkook flirts. You don’t have to see him to know he’s grinning annoyingly.
You’re glad he doesn’t see the way your teeth involuntarily sink into your bottom lip at his teasing voice.
“Your daddy can be insufferable sometimes,” you whisper conspiratorially, looking down at Nabi. She babbles something in return. You giggle and Nabi squeals in delight.
“What are my girls talking about?” Jungkook asks.
“None of your concern.”
You hear him huff. Suddenly, you remember that you left work during your shift. And that you promised Jimin to be back as soon as possible.
“Jungkook,” you gasp. He immediately turns to you. “I have to go back to work. Jimin is covering for me, but I've left him for way too long. I-”
“It’s okay, I’ll drive you back.” Jungkook’s calm voice works like a miracle cure for your panic. “I’ll just feed Nabi real quick and then we can leave.”
“You don’t have to. I can walk back.”
“I want to,” Jungkook says. “Besides, we can eat our cookies again. It’s been so long since I’ve eaten one.”
“I haven’t eaten one in so long as well.” The last time was together with Jungkook.
Jungkook blinks perplexed. “How have you survived until now?” He closes the distance between you, the back of his hand against your forehead. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
You roll your eyes and swat his arm. “I’m perfectly fine.”
“Why are you on a cookie diet?”
“Reminded me too much of you,” you mumble.
“Baby,” Jungkook coos. His knuckles trace the skin of your cheek. “I’m sorry. I’ll buy you as many as you want.”
You grin mischievously. “For the rest of my life?”
“Of course.”
“Daaa,” Nabi gurgles.
“Yes, I’ll buy you as many cookies you want too, once you grow your teeth.”
“That’s gonna be so soon.” You pout.
“We’ll always have time to make a second b-”
“Jungkook hurry.” You push him away. “Poor Jimin is covering for me, and Nabi is gonna starve.”
“Okay, okay,” he replies, though he doesn’t go back until he traps your mouth in a tender kiss. It’s a short kiss, but it messes with every coherent thought in your brain.
You wait for Jungkook to bring Nabi’s warm food. He opens the cutlery drawer and fishes out her tiny, pink spoon.
You smile when you think about the phone call you’re gonna have with Seulgi later. The next time you call it better be to tell me that Jungkook is your boyfie.
The ambiance is cosy – Nabi snuggled up in your arms, Jungkook sending cute smiles your way as he gets her food ready – a feeling of utter contentment that has your whole body at peace.
It’s been a long way to get here, but you finally feel at home.

A HH Lucifer-centric AU 12/?
PART 1, PART 2, PART 3, PART 4, PART 5, PART 6, PART 7, PART 8, PART 9, PART 10, PART 11, PART 13, PART 14, PART 15, PART 16, PART 17, PART 18, PART 19, PART 20, PART 21, PART 22
Fun fact:
I was supposed to include Heaven in this. The og plot was like Heaven was already friendly with them- like Luci's siblings, and they were supposed to be in the meeting back in chapter 4 and 5.
The argument would have been that Heaven is bound to help because Roo won't stop at Hell and it will eventually reach Heaven, making it their problem too.
But obviously I had a change of plans and I think this plot would be better.
A plot fit for a possible sequel, one might say.
Apologies for the shortness of the chapter but thank you still for the constant support! Your likes, reblogs, and comments are the things that give me inspiration to do this every day!
----------------------------------------------------
The good news is the problem has not reached any of the upper rings in his absence. The bad news? Sloth is almost devoured.
Overgrown roots have enveloped the main city's buildings, he can't even see the Goetia territory anymore. The blood-red flowers are still spewing black miasma and he can feel it slightly burn his skin.
Lucifer thinks that this is what real Hell looks like.
This means that everyone is just exerting enough power to keep it at bay but not enough to fully stop it. Lucifer was right in his decision to look for Goodie. Speaking of Goodie- the embodiment of good barely reacts. If she's being burned by the mist, she's doing a pretty good job of not showing it.
Goodie: Oh my. What trouble you are causing, Roo.
A fucking understatement but Lucifer won't argue. This is trouble, but a million times worse.
Lucifer: Let's go.
----------------------------------------------------
At one corner of Sloth, the Sins and the other higher powers of Hell have just finished another round of the sealing ritual. They've been going at it a month straight, there is no end in sight, and they are exhausted. Even Alastor is mostly drained as he is leaning a lot on his cane.
Beelzebub: Fuck! I knew this wasn't going to be easy but what the fuck?!
Someone scoffs.
Vox: Maybe if our dear king is here this would be over. Like, where the fuck is he huh??
Leviathan: Don't forget who you are speaking to, filthy sinner!
Vox: Oh boohoo. If we're all gonna die anyway, why should I be afraid of you? Should've known that absentee of a ruler left us all to rot after damning us here in the first place-
Vox suddenly finds a giant hand wrapped around his throat. It took him a few seconds of reconfiguration before he clearly saw who the fuck-
Vox: Fuckin- gah! Alastor!
Alastor has transformed into a taller, lankier, and more sinister of himself. Eyes turned into radio dials, face, and body adorned with glowing green stitches like a puppet whose master has on a string.
Alastor: Shouldn't frivolous televisions come with a silent setting?
Vox: Fuck! Off!
Alastor: Hahaha! What is the matter, Vox? You seem to have developed the illusion that you are the strongest person in the room. Shall I remind you of what came about your moth friend?
Velvette: You better let him go, old man!
Velvette yelled to back up Vox. She flinches as Alastor turns his head in her direction with a sickening snap of his neck.
Not wanting to back off, she was about to argue more when Carmila stepped in.
Carmila: Velvette! Cease this at once. Do you and the Vees have no self-preservation??
Velvette: Well- I- Vox's right and you lot know it! Great Lucifer called us all here, basically threatened us to help him fix a mess he caused, then fucks off to God knows where leaving us to practically kill ourselves for a mess, again, HE CAUSED!
The Sins and Goetia's have now transformed into their more monstrous forms at hearing the disrespect the lowly sinner said about their King.
Velvette and Vox are saved from near-permanent death by a commanding voice.
Lucifer: Kneel.
Everyone's bodies acted on their own. Their knees bled from the sudden contact on the ground.
None of them could move- try as they might. Their air became heavier, plus with the miasma, a lot of them were gasping for air. Nothing is coming in. They can't breathe. They can't-
They look up to see the King of Hell and an unknown woman. Unknown to most but the Sins very much recognize her as indicated by the widening of their eyes.
Satan: Goodie!
The woman giggles and waves cheerfully as if there wasn't a looming threat in the air.
Goodie: My, my. What big mouths you have~
----------------------------------------------------
What to look forward to in Part 13:
Some talks and reprimanding.
Another round of ritual.
The situation becomes worse.
Lucifer and Goodie's solution.

Warnings: curse words, twitter environment, mention of food, not proofread etc, etc. Minors DNI!
summary: The media is getting enough content to make Yn decide to take a step back from social media and everything that can further expose her personal life. Besides that, she has to deal with ghosts from the past and the curious gazes of fans who start to connect the dots when enough data is gathered.
a/n: none of the pictures used are mine, they are all from Pinterest and other apps. everything else is made up by me and I do not give permission for it to be published on a different platform. I would appreciate it if those things could be taken into consideration 💛

00:01:15 - Intro
Ben
And we're back. Welcome to the second spring outing with The Conversation. Shan is here with us today. Say hi, Shan.
Shan
Hiii.
Ben
And we're going to review the GMMTV pillars.
NiNi
So, Ben, what are the pillars? Let's do a little GMMTV history.
Ben
So when we refer to the pillars, we're talking about the original BL ships at GMMTV. The two we're going to talk about today are Off Jumpol and Gun Atthaphan, and we're gonna be talking about Tay Tawan and New Thitipoom, who've been together four times now — soon to be five.
Shan
I think what's important in the BL context about these two pairs, OffGun and TayNew, is that they have been at this for years at this point, like nine years, I think this year?
Ben
Nine years? Yep.
Shan
They have been at GMMTV, leading BLs, for almost a decade. And they have aged with the genre. They are now in their 30s. It's great, in my opinion, to see them continue to make shows and come back.
There was this idea that Thai BL was only for very young actors, that actors, once they exited their 20s, would also exit the genre, to move on to, quote-unquote, “mainstream” work that was heterosexual. And I think that these pairs sticking around and coming back to make new shows in their 30s is really important because it just shuts that whole line of thinking down: that BL is only about and for young people, that it is a phase of a career that actors need to quote, “move on from.” And also it gives us the opportunity to actually see adult stories in GMMTV BL, which is not something that we've gotten much of yet. To see stories about adult characters actually played by adults who are the right age for those characters is really refreshing.
So it's been really interesting to see these pairs come back into the public consciousness and to see that the fans are actually happy for them to stick around. I think that's been pretty cool.
Ben
I think what I enjoy the most about these two pairs coming back together is, both of the shows they're attempting have a more grown-up feel than their previous work. And in both cases, I think the fact that these actors are experienced and know each other really well genuinely benefits the work that they're doing.
00:03:58 - Cooking Crush: A Surprisingly-Good Romcom
NiNi
So let's dive into the first of the pillars. We're going to talk OffGun, and we're going to talk Cooking Crush. So, Ben, what is Cooking Crush about?
Ben
Cooking Crush is about how the most effective way to introduce a new actor at GMMTV is to slide them in around a bunch of other veterans.
Shan
[laughs] That's what it's about for you, for sure.
[all laugh]
Ben
Cooking Crush is a college-set BL about a team of culinary students who are trying to win a cooking competition, and the complications in their romantic lives around them. This show is actually really simple. Like, our protagonist, played by Gun, is named Prem. He lives with his grandmother and his sister. His grandmother runs a formerly very popular restaurant, and he has a goal of helping his grandmother's restaurant become more successful, and he wants to open a chef's table type of restaurant in the future.
He and his two friends, Samsee and Dynamite, are kind of the oddballs in their culinary school? They're considered the lowest ranked students. They get kind of picked on a bit. Prem is considered kind of clumsy; Dynamite is just really young, because he's kind of a prodigy; and Samsee is just picked on because he's old, because he's pursued three different degrees without completing them.
They're having some difficulties with school and Prem ends up having an interaction with Ten, played by Off, who is a med student who was a little bit overworked at the time and has accidentally starved himself to be pissy with his dad. The two of them have a very cute moment and a little relationship starts to build between them, originally off of Ten wanting Prem to teach him how to cook more, and Prem basically scamming that man because his little sister lost her tuition money.
NiNi
I think that's a good explanation of this setup. Shan, I want to come to you first. What's your headline on Cooking Crush?
Shan
Ohh, Cooking Crush is a warm hug of a show. And I love it. And it's not perfect. But it left me with such a good feeling and I intend to rewatch it, many times.
NiNi
OK. Well, Ben, I think we got your headline: Cooking Crush is about Aungpao.
Ben
That's about him.
[all laugh]
NiNi
Cooking Crush for me… what is my headline on Cooking Crush? That everybody in this is really good at comedy! Except maybe Gun, who's a little less good than everybody else, but everybody that they put in this is a very funny person, including Gun’s real-life sister, who I laughed my ass off at several times.
Shan
It's surprisingly good comedy. This one has been kind of a weird one in terms of the way it's been received by fandom. It didn't really fit the mood of the moment, I think. I think right now Thai BL fandom is very much paying attention to like, these more high-concept shows that are doing really fancy shit. Crazy visuals, supernatural, and mystical stuff. Cooking Crush is just a sweet romcom that wants to be really good at being a sweet romcom [laughs] and that's kind of it. It has kind of modest goals, but I think that people underestimate how hard it actually is to make a romcom that is actually sweet, and actually funny, and actually makes you want to support the couples in it—and this show succeeds at those things.
00:08:02 - CC: Comedy Ain't Easy
Ben
I think that's probably the biggest thing I would want to highlight about this show. Comedy is not easy. [laughs] At all. Comedy and comedic timing is really difficult to do, and Gun’s admitted that it's not his strongest skill as an actor—that he needs a lot of help from the crew and his cast mates to do comedy well.
Shan
Whereas for Off this is where he thrives, and he hasn't gotten to do it before in a BL.
NiNi
I think that they had the right idea in making Gun’s character Prem sort of the straight man of the ensemble, so to speak.
Ben
A great joke unto itself.
NiNi
[laughs] And surrounding it with a bunch of really good comedic actors who could sort of take up the zip and the zing of it all. Like I think that was the right idea. And I did enjoy, like, all that sort of zany, madcap stuff that was supposed to be happening around him from a writing standpoint, and the shape of what I saw it was supposed to be. I absolutely enjoyed that. My little niggle about it was that the direction doesn't zing enough for me, in terms of how I feel like this was meant to go.
It's really surprising for me because this was directed by Golf Sakon, who did my nemesis Fish Upon The Sky, but [laughs] Fish Upon The Sky, for all that we could say about it—and trust me, I have said plenty—it was visually interesting, it was zippy, it was well directed from that standpoint. And I feel like Golf’s direction in this was a little bit flat. It didn't have the zing. That sort of is my main complaint about the show, but the show itself is really, really good. I just wanted it to zip a little bit more.
Shan
Yeah, I agree with that critique, NiNi. I think the directing and the editing—[laughs] cannot forget the editing—is definitely the biggest ding on this show. There was some weird stuff going on in the production. The most notable of course being right in the middle of the show when we suddenly had an episode that was mostly reshoots, which was extremely obvious because Off got a haircut after they finished wrapping this show, a very obvious haircut, and then they had to come back and do reshoots. There was some really hinky editing throughout the show, like some dropped beats, some confusing scenes, some flashback sequences that didn't make sense as flashbacks… They were trying to do some stuff in the editing booth that I just think didn't work, and sometimes really undermined the good work that the writing and the acting was doing.
In terms of overall production, this show was not quite at the level it should have been. In the end, that didn't get in the way of what was a really strong story and really good performances from the cast, and so it still came together well enough, but it's a definite ding.
Ben
I want to talk about the writing portion. Shan, you're usually really good at detailing conflict writing. How about you go through the various major beats of this show and how this show executed them?
Shan
Obviously, we had the main romance, which was between Ten and Prem, and that was a pretty straightforward, simple romance, that actually worked amazingly, because what this show did extremely consistently was it set up all of these really annoying like classic drama tropes for the romance, and then every single time it just knocked them down by having the characters communicate with each other. An obstacle came up for the couple that would normally cause a one- or two-episode conflict. Instead, Ten would insist on talking to Prem about it, coming to some kind of alignment and understanding each other, and they would sail through it. That was kind of the consistent throughline with their relationship, and it was really strong and really lovely to see.
We also had a side couple romance that was between Fire and Dynamite. That one was a little bit more contentious. It was tied to a couple different things that were going on with Fire, with internalized homophobia, with some struggles that he was having in being his authentic self in his family with his mother. Dynamite was someone who kind of pushed him, and kind of made him aware of the things within himself that he was stifling. And so they had a very adversarial dynamic when the show started: Fire was very committed to kind of trying to be the son that his mom wanted him to be, including dating a woman, and so really fighting against what he was feeling for Dynamite. Dynamite is a great character, who I'm gonna let you talk about more, Ben, but I think their dynamic really pushed both of them along a good character growth arc through their relationship.
Alongside that, we had a couple big threads about the friendship between particularly Prem and Samsee and Dynamite. They were working together on this cooking school dream, they were trying to get through their classes, they entered this cooking competition and there was a lot of story about them as like a group of people who are kind of considered losers within their cohort, trying to get to a place where they were a good and efficient cooking team who could actually play at the level of some of these other folks that they were competing against.
We also had another big thread for Ten’s family situation. His mother had passed away some time ago. He had a lot of anger and resentment with his father about the circumstances around that, and a lot of trauma around his mother's death, and he was kind of working through that as he was falling in love with Prem.
So we had all of these different things flowing into the same story, and one of the things that was so impressive about this show is that they actually did all flow together. The writing was very consistent. The characters were figured out from the beginning of the story. It's one of those things where, once you have all the context of who these people are, you can look back at all their previous behavior and it totally makes sense, and everything tracks. And all of these plot threads came together in the final three episodes through an actually pretty well executed conflict arc, which is something that doesn't happen very often in Thai BL—usually that's where Thai BLs completely fall apart. But here all of the conflicts were well laid throughout the show and built to kind of come to a head at the same point, and then we had them converge in the final arc.
Not everything about the way they played out was extremely perfect or satisfying, but most of it was, and the characterization stayed true the whole way through. So it was some pretty strong writing for a show like this.
NiNi
I have to concur that the writing was really strong on this show. It's logically laid out. It makes sense, the characters behave like recognizable human beings, which I can't always say [laughs] is the reality of a lot of these dramas that we're watching. For example, Dynamite, who is a complicated character—with the mix of the writing and the acting, I could see underneath where his pushing of Fire was coming from, and why it was something that he felt like he needed to do?
We find out through a flashback later, which—was a weird way to get this information—Fire was the one who made Dynamite who he is. He made Dynamite feel like he had to stand up for himself and be out there, and all he's doing is trying to do the same for Fire. It just plays out in this way that I think made some people uncomfortable, but I could see it once the context information was there. This is where [their] editing got hinky, because clearly the character was written this way. The hinky editing needed so that it took almost 2/3 of the show for the motivation to meet up with the character. That's not a writing problem, that's an editing problem.
I found the writing on the show was incredibly strong, everything logically follows on from everything else. There was a lot of surprisingly deep writing around Ten’s whole issue with his dad about his mom, and his feelings about his mom. Around Samsee's feelings of potentially getting left behind because he's older, and they're getting into these relationships and he's starting to feel like, ‘what is there for me? It took me so long to find my people, and I feel like they're leaving me.’ And that was a particularly strong thread that I really enjoyed. I enjoyed Metha, who is Fire and Ten’s friend—hilarious, played by Tum, super good actor. I love him, very, very funny. I really enjoyed the writing on this thing, and I can't always say that for, particularly Thai BL… it was delightful.
00:16:59 - CC: Dynamite’s Queer Writing and Ten as a Rare Romantic Lead
Shan
All the characters in this show are great, but there's a couple that really, really stood out, and I think we should talk about them. And Ben, you should definitely lead us with some Dynamite talk. Tell us why that character matters so much to you.
Ben
Dynamite has the great honor of getting The Conversation’s first blorbo of the season award.
Shan
[laughs] So early in the season, too.
Ben
I know. He is the winter ‘24 blorbo for me! I love this boy. Here's the thing. With Dynamite: he is canonically young, he's like 17-18 in like his third year in school. And his only friends are played by Gun Atthaphan and Dome Jaruwat, who… create this very visibly queer friend group dynamic? This communicates a ton to me almost instantly, very early in the show, particularly with Dynamite living in some sort of like tenement housing, and then having really no one else to rely upon when someone died in the apartment above his, and contaminated the apartment he lived in, so he ends up moving in with Samsee.
It’s a very obvious story to me as a queer person, that he had to finish school early because he could not stay home. And he has no one else to rely upon except his closest friends when he's in trouble. Samsee is communicated as a person who is like ‘I don't want nobody in my house,’ but immediately opened up his house to Dynamite when Dynamite was in trouble, because where else was that kid gonna go?
And so, with Dynamite, we eventually learn that he was kind of getting picked on when he first got into the school with the rest of them, because… obviously he's a kid, and boys suck. And Fire saves him from this bullying instance, which almost read as a bashing? And this clearly rearranged his view about who he is in his life, where he recognized that he was gonna get clocked regardless. And so he was just going to be who he is. Fire gave off this whole fuck-you aura that he was clearly drawn to, and so he didn't go at Fire timid, because that's not what he saw in Fire.
Dynamite spends the early part of the season determinedly pursuing Fire, who feigns annoyance about this, but is eventually revealed to… not want Dynamite to stop pursuing him. When he gets drunk and calls Dynamite out to come hang out with him, he tells him very directly: ‘even if I say no, don't stop.’ Which, very familiar to me dealing with my own closet issues and a bunch of other closeted folks growing up.
Fire and Dynamite work really well for me, because familial acceptance is something that they're both struggling with. When Dynamite reveals his story to Fire, he tells Fire that he's okay with Fire not being ready to come out. Even if it's something he would prefer they do, he has lived through the worst things you can experience when you come out, which is losing your family support network. I really like that Dynamite’s understanding and belief in him is clearly what allows Fire to rebuild his sense of himself when he finally tells his mom that he cannot live up to this ideal that she has of him. That's built out from him recognizing who he is, because Dynamite has helped him figure that out.
Dynamite hits a really specific queer note for me, because they create a character who I think is genuinely funny to watch, but you can feel a lot of his queer angst running underneath him the whole time, and they don't overextend it and make it be [laughs] way too melodramatic. Like his character’s just not gonna behave that way. I really like the way Dynamite has accepted the reality of his world, and has decided to build his own space in it, and it started with his friends.
Most of these shows often get queer characters wrong in that they don't have like a reliable queer support network around them before they go rushing into some fuckin’ romance with some guy that's supposed to be the romance of their lives. Very glad that in this particular case, Dynamite has rock solid besties as he's pursuing Fire.
NiNI
In terms of other characters that I really responded to—and Shan's gonna like pick up the torch and run with it here—I loved Off as Ten.
Shan
Yeah!
NiNI
I am a recent Off convert. I really started getting into Off around Not Me, because the roles that I was seeing him play, from Not Me and continuing, I could see the growth that he's had over the years, and I really liked the energy that he was starting to bring to his roles, the maturity and the gravitas that he was starting to bring, whether it was something serious, like playing Sean in Not Me, or Mote in Midnight Motel, which I really enjoyed—or even, especially actually, playing Ten in a comedy like this. I mean, I just bought it 100%. They put Off on screen in those glasses, and the first thing we saw him do was argue with his dad, and I was like, yes absolutely, I am here, let's do this.
I love the character of Ten. He's such a combination of tightly wound ball of stress and also incredibly fun and relaxed human being. I don't know how those two things work in one character, but they do, and Off plays both sides of him, I think brilliantly. I really enjoy getting into why he wanted to be a doctor, and the little mini arc that we had towards the middle of the series where he gets to recommit to being a doctor because he had sort of slid off course slightly. And he gets to recommit to, ‘no this is really what I want to do, I want to save people.’ Really loved that. The angst that he had around his mom dying, the angst that he had around his dad moving his girlfriend in, apparently it seems not too long after that… there's just a lot happening with Ten, but through it all he's just so delightful as a character. He saw Prem, he decided: ‘Yep, that's the one for me.’ He pursued him openly, he was just very forthright and honest at every step of the way, communicating all the way through… just love it. Love the character, loved Off in the role. I know. Shan's gonna, like, take that and run with it. [laughs]
Shan
I just want y'all to know—
NiNI
Shan is a babii, Shan loves Off.
Shan
I am living. I am getting my whole life right now. I just want you all to know, all of you listeners, that I was pretty much the lone babii around here until very recently. [laughs] I have always been an Off girlie, I have loved him since way back in the Puppy Honey days, I've always found him so charming.
He started out as a pretty untested untrained actor and we've seen him grow across his roles, and so a lot of people have only kind of recently, in his last couple of shows, like fully come on board. But I have always been an Off girlie. I know that this show has turned Ben into a full blown babii, finally, [laughs] and that NiNi has come around on Off, and it's been very amazing to see.
For my money, Ten is Off’s best character. They found the perfect character at the perfect time for him to play to all of his strengths. What's great about Ten — everything that NiNi just said is true, he's a very well written, very well-rounded character, and I love him specifically as a romantic lead. He has some really important qualities that you typically don't see in romantic leads, and that's why so many romcoms and romances are frustrating. Ten is a very honest person. He's a straightforward person. He is loyal. He kind of insists on building trust and on talking things through.
One of my favorite things that happened in the final stretch of episodes was, Ten found in Prem’s room this sticky note that Pang had written, that said something like ‘the money from scamming Doc’ or something like that, basically making a joke about Prem scamming Doc for money. Ten found this sticky note and… he got his feelings hurt about it. He was like, ‘wow like, this kind of seems like you all were mocking me, this hurts my feelings.’ And in a typical drama you would see that turn into a big conflict. You would see the person who found the sticky note not saying anything about it, maybe be passive-aggressive, probably leave and go sit in their hurt feelings by themselves and then later it would blow up into a big fight. That's not what happened here, because Ten wouldn't let it happen. He takes the sticky note directly to Prem and he says ‘I found this, it kind of hurt my feelings, can you explain what this is about?’ And then he actually listens to Prem. And Prem apologizes because it was kind of mean-spirited, and he admits that. And then Ten says ‘OK, thank you for telling me. I forgive you, I'm gonna let it go.’
And I just love that! You don't see that kind of mature communication very often in romance at all, let alone in BL that's typically centered on younger characters. That was what Ten was like through that entire arc. He was just so honest. He wouldn't let silly misunderstandings get in the way. He always made sure to be very clear with Prem about what he wanted and what he was feeling. And he was respectful when Prem wanted space, but he always made sure that Prem knew that he was waiting there for when he was ready for more. Such a good model for a romantic lead, and because of those qualities in him, he and Prem ended up becoming a great couple that just—were a team. They faced things together. Our friend Twig called them a battle couple. They faced challenges together and didn't let things come between them.
We haven't really mentioned Chef Chang Ma, who sucks and we hate him.
Ben
Sorry, Victor, your character sucks.
Shan
Your character sucks! He's a mentor to Prem, but he's also trying to hit on him the whole time. He's super inappropriate, he's always crossing boundaries, he's kind of a piece of shit, if I'm being real honest. But that guy was not able to get between Ten and Prem at any point, because every single time he tried, they communicated with each other, and figured out how to get back on the same page, and worked around him or shut him down.
This couple's gonna stick with me in that they were able to work through so much together, and that they really sincerely made each other happy and made each other more confident and better at the things that they wanted to be better at. It was just lovely. I really loved this romance.
Ben
I'm going to continue behind Shan and continue praising Off Jumpol on this one, because I have not been kind to that man for the last decade. [laughs] He has not always been necessarily my favorite ambassador for BL. He's come a long way. This is definitely his best BL role.
I'm making a Venn diagram after we're done with this recording, and it's just going to be Patts from La Pluie and Ten from Cooking Crush, because these characters have a lot of great crossover traits I really like. They're really kind with their partner and their friends, but… they have a temper, and it comes out with people they don't like. Off is funny, but also he's really good at playing… kind of pissy characters, and I'm really glad that they were like, ‘we gotta have Off be pissy with somebody. Let's make the correct choice for once, and not make it Gun that he's gonna be pissy with.’
Shan
[laughs] The crucial change!
Ben
Let's make him be pissy with his dad!
Shan
Mhm.
Ben
An excellent choice. And why is he pissy with his dad? Because his dad's a doctor. He didn't save his mom. That's a fairly valid reason to be pissy with someone about. And I think it works in terms of the family dynamics they go into. The dad's not going to tell his son that he's hurting because he feels like he failed to save his wife, the only woman he says he'll ever marry. He clearly cares about his son, because despite the way his son’s always talking out his fucking ass at him, he's not really punished him in any way. Despite the fact that Ten is clearly upset about the mom, and the dad in relation to that.
Shan
Yeah! Ten’s scenes with his dad were intense, and he was not being respectful and backing down in those scenes, ever. In this finale, he, like, took a power pose across the table from his dad, sat down at the other end of the table, planted himself firmly, and was like, ‘this is my boyfriend, and you are gonna fucking deal with it.’ I love that shit!
Ben
This is what I mean with the implied writing, because the way the stepmom is playing, she is way too familiar. It's very clear she's meant to be read as younger…
Shan
Mm-hmm.
Ben
And is trying to figure out what line she's supposed to take between being the partner of an older man, but also being closer in age to the kids. And like they mirror the positioning, she's sitting next to the dad, at the same position that Prem is sitting next to Ten. And there's this whole, ‘you brought this woman here. I wasn't consulted. This is my boyfriend. You're not getting consulted.’ And so I think the conflict between Ten and his dad is really great. Off needs to have, like, hostile conflict with other characters, because that's what we want to get out of him as an actor [laughs], directed in useful ways at his dad and at Chang Ma, and not at Gun's character, which is usually the problem I have with them in their shows.
00:32:08 - CC: Final Comments and Ratings
Ben
I was really glad to get a solid romcom out of OffGun. They also gave us some really ridiculous hilarity moments, like, they got that shot with their hands in the oven glove, twice? [Shan laughs] Unhinged. Holy shit.!
Shan
The interior oven glove shot? Amaaaazing.
NiNi
Off getting hit in the face with Chinese kale? Not something I ever knew that I needed, but oh my god, I needed it.
Shan
Ten—he’s a big-ass goofball, which we saw with his fantasy sequences! Every time they were having cooking lessons, he was having fantasies in his head about Prem and various food items. [laughs] And they were the wackiest shit. Listen, I wish GMMTV would stop playing these games, but there was a YouTube version that had a lot of scenes cut from it and a WeTV version that had the full scenes. A lot of these food fantasies got cut from the YouTube version, but these sequences just really let you into Ten’s head, how wild and weird he was getting in there, and I just loved seeing that aspect of his character.
NiNi
It was a lot of fun. I have some dings, I have some critiques. The final episode went a little bit flat. They did round out and complete every single arc, except maybe one. But it did feel a little pat at the end? And out of left field, Pang and Samsee getting together in the end of the final episode.
[all laugh]
Shan
That was quite a choice—I was shipping Metha and Samsee for the whole show.
Ben
I was—
Shan
I was kind of disappointed.
Ben
I was disappointed.
Shan
I didn’t expect to actually get Metha and Samsee, but I kind of hoped that they would have left the door open for it. Firmly closing that door with having him get together with Pang at the last episode? I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either.
NiNi
It was a choice. But. It did kiiind of work, and the only reason that it kind of worked is because of my first nominee of the year for the Mark Pakin 6th Man award, and that is Dome Jaruwat.
Shan
Mmm! Dome was great.
NiNi
Dome is a great supporting actor.
Ben
You wanna know how good Dome is? I've been half joking about rewatching Until We Meet Again since we started doing this show. I haven't actually started until recently, because watching Dome every week reminded me that he sang on the Until We Meet Again soundtrack. And I had to go back and start watching the show.
NiNi
Yeah, cause Dome is primarily a musician, you do forget, but he is actually a very good supporting actor. When he shows up, I am always delighted anew by how good he is.
Shan
I've seen other shows that had him in it, but this is the first one where I really sat up and paid attention to him. He was fantastic as Samsee. And he got some real shit to do. One of the big conflicts in the final run of the show was about the way that these new romances were affecting the friendships. Dynamite and Prem were paying attention to their boyfriends, they were blowing Samsee off, they were missing cooking practice, and he was feeling some kind of way about it. He was kind of feeling a little bit abandoned. And it was just awesome that the show actually took that seriously, not just in letting Samsee express his feelings and get mad and have the other characters take that seriously and care? But they actually very deliberately, in the narrative, prioritized the friendship reunion and makeup scene over Ten and Prem getting together and making their relationship official. They had Ten approach with the intention of asking Prem to be his boyfriend, and stop and see that they were repairing their friendship in that moment, and back off and walk away.
Ben
It felt really important for BL, because BL friends are so ridiculous. BL friends are basically shippers half the time. Like, if they see, like, one of the boys is possibly getting with another boy that becomes the only thing that that character cares about.
Shan
Everyone's a fujoshi.
Ben
I like that that wasn't the case here! I like that Samsee had genuine beef with his friends deprioritizing him, when they were in the midst of something really important to them as a group that they've been working towards for a long time. Like, are you all fucking up our big project for dick? Come on!
Shan
This show really let its side characters shine. It was a really good showcase for a couple of actors: I think Dome and Aungpao, in particular…. Tum also got great stuff, Neo got to do great stuff… We haven't even mentioned Prem's grandma, who was also awesome.
Ben
She was great.
NiNi
Amazing. She was so good.
Shan
Fantastic, no nonsense, cut the bullshit, but at the same time, very loving and supportive. She was awesome. I loved her.
Ben
There's a little bit of a dropped bit that happens in episode 11, that I kind of wish the show hadn't cut out as much. Fire and Dynamite go back to Fire’s place and the mom comes out of Fire’s room in this very weird jumpscare, and Fire has the closet panic and ends up kicking Dynamite away from him. And he kicks Dynamite hard enough that he goes flying across the room and gets hurt a bit. And I kind of wish they had followed up on that scene. Because… I feel like Fire, recognizing that he actually hurt Dynamite is probably one of those things that tilts him on to the other end of ‘I'm going to come out now.’ And I kind of wish the show had followed up on that properly and let us see Fire make the decision.
Shan
Yeah, I do wish that the pacing of the Fire and Dynamite plot had been a little different in the final episodes? I think that it ended up feeling a little bit rushed at the end, and I think that was just about the timing of the beats. If a couple things had shifted back a little bit, I think it would have worked. As it was, it kind of all got shoved into the finale, and so it felt a little too quick, a little too easy. I like where it landed… like NiNi said earlier, the way that all of these story arcs ended felt correct and felt right. They rounded everything out. It's just that some of the beats in the final stretch got kind of weirdly compressed.
Ben
It was a little bit frustrating for me because Dynamite and Ten are both very forward and overt pursuers of their romantic interests, and I kind of wish that the two couples’ romantic pacing had been better aligned across the show.
NiNi
And again, that goes to the editing. It's a good show, it's incredibly well written and incredibly well acted, but I think that the direction and the editing let it down a little bit, and that's why for me, it got an 8.5.
Shan
I gave it a 9. The show was such a positive experience. I was so excited every Sunday morning to watch it, it was such a great way to start my rest day, to like, have a good vibe to take me through my Sunday. The writing was so strong, and that's the thing that I tend to care most about in shows. If the writing is strong, if the characters feel right to me? That is what I prize most in a show. The editing, the directing, definitely had some flaws. There are some things that I would change, but the most important parts of the show held up really well for me and I definitely will be returning to it often.
Ben
I think I'm going with a 9 because they got the gay portions of the show right, and I really liked the character drama of this. All the big moments for the characters in this show land correctly for me. This show held together the whole way through. And that's kind of what's good about the writing. Like when you're noticing editing issues in a show, it's because you're following the writing, and you see the editing stumbling to try and not let it down. I think the character writing is really strong and holds together for the whole show. I think the conflict writing that comes out of who these characters are is really good, and I just really like the way these characters work together. When I see these folks together in the ‘It's been years later! Let's go to Prem’s restaurant!’ it doesn't feel like a ridiculous impossibility.
Shan
I loved that flash forward. I love a time skip when it's used to tell us that everything is still good in the future, after all the conflicts have been solved in the present. I hate a time skip when it skips over conflict, but once all the conflicts are solved, yes! Take me to the happy epilogue. I love that shit.
NiNi
So that's a 9 for Cooking Crush from The Conversation.
Ben
It's a good show, it's an easy recommend.
Shan
Thank you for coming back, Off and Gun, and thank you for sticking around for The Trainee in 2024. We look forward to seeing you again.
00:41:14 - Cherry Magic: Beating Expectations and Simping for Tay Tawan
NiNi
OK, so moving on, and it's time for us to talk about Cherry Magic Thailand! Now, I am not so big an original Cherry Magic girlie as a lot of other people. I enjoyed it, I had a great time with it, but I'm not a stan of the original Cherry Magic live action from Japan, in the way that some other people are.
Ben
I was!
NiNi
[laughs] Let's see. So, go ahead and lead us in. What is Cherry Magic Thailand about? And maybe you could talk a little bit about the original Cherry Magic as well.
Ben
Cherry Magic is about a young man, in this case named Achi, who is a low-ranking member at some sort of large corporation, who at the age of 30, because he's a virgin, gains telepathic powers. When he touches someone and makes any sort of physical contact with them, he can sort of hear their current internal monologue and what might be going on with him. He learns fairly soon after getting his powers that the hotshot salesperson in his company has been nursing a long-time crush on him, and complications ensue. There's also a very great supporting cast, which also in one portion features the same power.
NiNi
So this is an adaptation of an adaptation, or an adaptation of an original that was also adapted in another way… like [laughs] it's a little confusing. So this is originally a manga. The manga was adapted to Japanese live action. The manga has now also been adapted to a Thai live action, and then there's a third adaptation currently ongoing, which is a Japanese anime version. So there are three adaptations of this manga. We're going to talk about the Thai version in the most detail here, but I think we're going to come maybe to a couple of things to be said about the Japanese live action and the anime version.
Shan, what were your overall initial thoughts when you heard Thailand's gonna adapt Cherry Magic and it's going to be done by GMMTV?
Shan
I was so skeptical. I am a TayNew girlie, I love them. I loved Dark Blue Kiss back in the day, so I was really excited to see Tay and New doing BL together again — I was not at all excited to see them doing Cherry Magic [laughs] when I first heard about it. I did have an affinity for the original Japanese live action. I don't think it's a perfect show, I have my own notes on it, but I did enjoy it a lot, I thought it was really well done. And I was just unsure of why GMMTV and Thailand needed to do their own version.
That said, I was also hoping that if Thailand was going to do this, that the main purpose would be to address the biggest shortcoming of the Japanese live action, which is that in this narrative about a virgin who acquires magical powers, and then falls in love and then loses those magical powers via having sex with the person he's in love with, there was no sex! There wasn't even a kiss on screen! That was a huge flaw of that version that I hoped to see Thailand correct. And honestly, what I thought was going to be the main thing they could bring to the table in tackling this adaptation, was kind of finishing that narrative in a more sex-positive way that Thailand is kind of known for that Japan doesn't always do, particularly when they're doing their lighter BLs.
NiNi
Ben, what about you? When you heard about this adaptation, what were your thoughts?
Ben
Opposition. I was deeply opposed to this. [everyone laughs] I was not keen on a Thai attempt at this. I was kind of curious about what Thai humor would look like for this, and I was interested in the adaptation because I don't know what corporate culture in Thailand was like. So I thought that there was a real opportunity there. I was interested in a TayNew comeback, particularly because Tay hadn't really lost a step—even when he was doing other work—and I thought Newwie had gotten a lot better. And so I was excited about the two of them getting back together, and I thought that they were the best choice at GMMTV if GMMTV was going to do this. But I was not looking forward to it.
How about you, NiNi? Did you have any initial feelings or concerns about it?
NiNi
I had no intention of watching this. [laughs] I was gonna give it a pass. I love Tay Tawan—I'm just gonna spend a few seconds here being a simp. That man is gorgeous.
Shan
He's so beautiful.
NiNi
He is so beautiful. And he is such a good actor. The first thing I ever saw Tay Tawan in was 3 Will Be Free, and I literally remember thinking, who is that? I think I might have said it out loud. Since then I have been a devotee. He can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Tay Tawan is everything to me.
I have not been a big fan of Newwie. When I watched the parts of the Kiss series that I watched, loved Tay, was into Tay, Newwie I wasn't really feeling. I came around on Newwie a little bit last year after watching him in The Warp Effect—I thought he did really well there. And so I was not as down on him as before, but I still didn't feel like Cherry Magic was a story that I was interested in seeing Thailand adapt necessarily?
A, it felt like an incredibly Japanese type of story and B, the director, X Nuttapong, is not one of my favourites. I do not tend to like his work. X did Vice Versa, Theory of Love, neither of those are my favorites. So I was saying, ‘OK, I'm only now kind of starting to feel like Newwie could maybe do something. I don't really like X’s work. I think I'm going to give this a pass.’ And I did give it a pass initially [laughs]. And then all of you started watching it and getting incredibly excited about it. Somewhere near maybe episode 10, I was like, ‘ahh! Fine!’ and started watching it. And I'm glad that I did!
Ben
So Shan, since you are the TayNew girlie—I don't remember their fans are called—of The Conversation—
NiNi
Polcas, they're polcas! How do I know that? I don't know.
Shan
Yeah, I don't know what polca means, but that's what they're called. I do not identify as a polca, ‘cause I hate the name. But I do love TayNew.
Ben
Why don't you break down why this was such an excellent viewing experience for us?
Shan
I mean, you heard all that skepticism that we were all bringing to the table, right? And this show, just, like, blew us all out of the water. It was such a good adaptation, it was so impressive. There's a lot of reasons for that, and we'll get into all the things that this production did well, but right at the core of it, the most important thing, is that Tay and New just killed it in these roles. They were just absolutely perfect as Karan and Achi.
If you're familiar with the story of Cherry Magic, you know that Karan, or Kurosawa in the Japanese version,  is meant to be this kind of otherworldly perfect man, like he's excellent at his job. He's kind to everybody. He's beautiful. His very presence is just intimidating, because he seems too perfect to be real. And of course, he's not actually perfect, he's a human being. But that's kind of the image that he has. And so Tay Tawan [laughs] honestly, is a perfect casting choice for that role.
NiNi
No notes, no notes whatsoever.
Shan
Right? That man is beautiful. Every single time he is on screen in this show, I just got to get a hold of myself, and it's difficult every single time. Seeing that man and his beauty properly appreciated by the camera, wardrobe working, hair working, everything working for him… it was just such a good role for him. Not only on the looks either, but on his performance!
He really nailed the inherent kindness of Karan, but also the inherent loser goofiness of him, which is the part of him that you don't see on the surface, and that's the secret. He seems like this cool, suave guy, but he's actually a total simp. He's super in love with Achi, and real fuckin nerdy about it. I think Tay Tawan was really able to… balance those aspects of him so well, so that they came together believably as one person.
And then New as Achi, I think brought a really interesting dimension, because in some versions I think that character can feel a little bit self-contained, to the exclusion of being able to empathize with others. And Achi didn't feel like that. He felt like someone who had self esteem issues, he felt like someone who was intimidated by others and wasn't always sure what he could bring to the table, but who was interested in other people, and kind, and really wanted to learn how to communicate better with others.
I thought they both did such a great job, both as their individual characters, and then together. We already knew they had awesome chemistry, but they really brought their A game to this show in terms of developing a believable chemistry between these two characters. We got to really see, over the course of the show, Achi's awareness of his attraction to Karan build, and his feelings genuinely grow, from kind of liking him in kind of a generic way, to actually getting to know him as a real person, taking him off that idol pedestal he'd had him on in his mind, and falling in love with him genuinely, and learning how to return his affection and develop a mutual relationship together.
This Thai version really hit all of those really important landmarks in a romantic relationship, including the physical intimacy, with perfect pacing, such genuine emotion… they just really, really sold it. They did such a good job with this show, and I'm just so happy to eat my words and to have all my skepticism proven wrong. They did awesome.
Ben
I think you're right about Tay Tawan being a good choice, ‘cause Kurosawa slash Karan is… eminently charming in a really accessible way. The big part that works for him as a character is the fact that he's such a fuckin dork! And Tay Tawan is a dork. [laughs] That is a… important piece of his public persona, that he's really charming in a way that's not always intentional on his part? It's funny when it is intentional, and it's hilarious when he trips over himself because he's like, wait, did I just do that? It's great. It works really well here. Tay Tawan.
Shan
What a man.
Ben
I say like, these boys are beautiful, like every week, but he really is gorgeous. He's just absolutely stunning to look at all the time and he is just so delightful as Karan. This is probably my favorite role for Tay. I don't think, like, it's Tay’s best work, but I think it's my favorite role for him.
NiNi
I understand exactly what you mean, because I think that his best role is Shin from 3 Will Be Free, but in terms of like a great just nailed-on role for him? It's exactly like you said: he's gorgeous and the camera loves him. And so every time the camera turns on him and shows you Achi looking at Karan, and the camera is Achi in that moment—he takes your breath away!
When Karan goes to see Achi during Songkran and he has to basically wash himself, there's a slow-motion thing when he starts throwing the water on his face, and I just kind of literally was watching that with my chin in my palm, and just like, wowwww, full zone-out moment. The camera loves that man. And it spent so much time on letting us see how gorgeous Karan is, but especially how gorgeous he is to Achi. I thought there was some really clever camera work and it was a good use of Tay’s good looks.
00:54:13 - CM: Relationship Development and the Powers
Ben
Speaking of Tay Tawan being a dork and being perfectly selected for this: at the end of episode 3, when they are returning from the company trip, and [laughs] Achi falls asleep and ends up leaning on Karan and wakes up because Karan starts screaming in his head—
NiNi
[laughs] Screaming internally, that's so funny.
Shan
That was so perfect. There has never been a more perfect moment on television. I don't care.
NiNi
It was amazing. It was incredible. It was delightful. It was fantastic. I can't even describe it well. Like you just have to see it.
Shan
It's the way that he keeps his face so controlled…
Ben
But like you can see like his mouth opens slightly, his eyes widen a little bit.
Shan
His eyes are screaming, while his face—
Ben
Ahhh!
Shan
And then you see the “AAAAHHH” Like on the subtitle, which is perrrrfect perfect perfect. They did so well. They had so much fun with the mind reading jokes, and there were so many of them.
Ben
There were, they got a lot of traction out of it, it was great. Like, even after that moment ends and he wakes up Achi, Achi leans against him again, and he's like, ‘I wish I could fight all of Achi’s nightmares.’
[laughs]
Shan
Every time we heard his simp thought it was so perfect, it was always something so cheesy, or he's having a fantasy about like wiping Achi's nose or something, or like dreaming of their future together. Or he's singing a love song off-key in his own head. It's just so good! [laughs]
NiNi
I actually really like the way that the Thai show used the mind reading power. I like the jokes that they made out of it better than the Japanese version.
Ben
I think that's one of the things that they had extra time for, and I think they calibrated the humor for the Thai approach really well.
NiNi
Just simple things like, after Achi tells Karan about the mind reading power and Karan decides to use it to A) get Achi to move in with him, and B) once Achi has moved in with him to quote-unquote “test” the mind reading power at every potential opportunity by saying, ‘can you hear me now? Can you hear me now?’ And just like touching him randomly… [laughs] He touched his ankle and I was just like, oh my god, ok, this is ridiculous.
Shan
My favorite—he stuck out his elbow. He stuck out his elbow like a huge dork, leaning on his shoulder. And he was like, ‘can you hear me? Can you hear me?’ It's like, it was just so charming!
Ben
My favorite thing about Karan is he was never embarrassed about how deeply attracted to Achi he was. There was a toothpaste moment, where he started having a fantasy and Achi was like ‘oh my god, bro, please step back,’ and he's like, ‘wait, you see those things, too? So you saw… oh! ok.’ And then he walked away giggling to himself.
Shan
He just thinks it's funny. Actually that is an under-discussed, really cool thing that this adaptation did. Once Achi confesses to Karan that he's been able to hear him the whole time, Karan doesn't get upset. He actually thinks it's awesome. Because to him it's so meaningful to know that this whole time, Achi has known how he feels, and Achi has decided to be around him, he's OK with it. Karan, he’s someone who seems very confident on the surface, but he's very insecure about his feelings for Achi, because he doesn't think that they're returned, and he's always very worried about whether or not he's being a burden to Achi with his feelings, whether or not he's pushing something on him that he doesn't want, he's very conscious of that and respectful of boundaries.
Ben
It's an excellent gay choice.
Shan
Right? And so for him to learn that Achi has known the whole time how he feels and has been comfortable being around him anyway actually really made him happy. He was delighted to know that he didn't have to hide himself in that way.
Ben
Achi called that out, too. He's like, ‘why is the real beneficiary of my powers Karan and not me?’ That's actually a source material joke that they brought over really well. Kurosawa learns about the powers and starts actively flirting with Achi at work. And he's like, ‘why is he better at using my powers than me?’
NiNi
As much as we love the use of the powers, I actually want to talk about the moments that he chooses not to use his powers and instead to, for example, use his words. Because part of this story is about Achi coming more into himself and learning to be bolder and to be more open with himself and his feelings. And I really enjoyed that story happening alongside the powers. One of the things I found in the Japanese version was that Adachi really, I felt, leaned on his powers perhaps a little too much, in his relationship with Kurosawa? Achi, in this version uses his powers more sparingly, and also more accidentally? Whereas in the Japanese version he uses them more deliberately.
Shan
I thought they were so intentional about it. Achi confesses earlier about having the powers in the story. He expresses clearly to Karan his fears, about how their relationship will stay intact when he doesn't have that crutch to lean on. They talk about it directly. They do their really silly practice long-distance thing because Achi's feeling so nervous about whether they'll be able to maintain their communication while they're apart and he can't touch Karan to hear what he's thinking.
Like you said NiNi, in some really crucial moments in the later stages of their relationship development, he's not using his powers, and he doesn't even think to, because he has grown to be so comfortable with communicating with Karan, using his words and listening to Karan and trusting what he's saying. We saw that evolve over time, so that in the end, when they finally decided to have sex, it really wasn't about the powers at all. That had already been resolved and they were already on really solid footing, Achi wasn't even using them anymore in that way. I like that they did it that way, that they separated those things a little bit. They had sex when they were ready to have sex and it wasn't related to wanting to get rid of the powers; the powers were not a barrier for them.
NiNi
I really liked how they went about the whole progression of their physical intimacy.
Shan
I think it felt…really right. I felt like I could trust this show to address it in a way that not only tied off the plot of the story and the narrative, which was rooted in sex or lack thereof, but also to make sure that it felt emotionally authentic to where the characters were, that any moment of intimacy between them was building their relationship development arc. And they pulled that off so beautifully.
Ben
They have their first kiss in a way I think is really satisfying, because Achi initiates it. Which I think is an excellent choice for Achi compared to Adachi.
Shan
And it felt very earned because their relationship was already so deep at that point, and you felt like Achi was ready for it. And of course, the build to them deciding to have sex for the first time. I like the way that that played around their temporary separation. Achi went away, and they hadn't gotten there yet in their relationship—not because of any big reason, it's just the natural progression, hasn't happened yet. And I like that when Karan went to visit him, things just felt right, and they progressed. I like that the story never felt like it was artificially holding that up to get to a certain beat. It really felt cathartic to finally see these characters get there in a way that felt so, so correct.
Ben
I thought every moment of intimacy between these characters was really well calibrated for the moment, and that the two actors involved understood what they were trying to accomplish in the scene. It was really nice to see two actors with experience, who trust each other, really deliver good emotional and intimate scene work, and that is supported by even all of the non-kissing they do between their characters. Just overall, I really, truly enjoyed watching Tay and New work together with these characters.
01:02:15 - CM: Other Characters
NiNi
Let's talk a little bit about the characters outside of Karan and Achi. I really enjoyed the way that these particular versions of the side characters were done. I particularly enjoyed Pai and Dujdao from the office. Dujdao is me, I am Dujdao. She is my fave. She is the one, I love her. Pai in this version is Fujisaki in the Japanese version, and then you've got Rock who is Rokkaku, you've got Min who is Minato, and you've got Jinta who is Tsuge.
I really liked the way that this adaptation played with those characters, and I like how they intersected with the Karan and Achi story. I always like to see the wider world of these characters and the friends and family that they have, and how their relationship fits into their relationships with their friends and their family. Watching, particularly the little office family that formed with Dujdao and Pai and Rock, and then the friendship between Achi and Jinta, which I felt a lot more strongly about in this version than I did about the friendship between Tsuge and Adachi—it's a different kind of relationship. And I personally enjoyed Achi and Jinta’s relationship a little more than I did Tsuge and Adachi’s.
Shan
I really, really loved Min and Jinta in this story. I thought those actors did a great job with these characters, I felt like they fit in really well into the narrative. Jinta and Min in their own romance, as well as Jinta's friendship with Achi—both of those threads that they were carrying complemented the main story so well: supported the themes, helped move the plot along, they were just really well integrated into this story.
Jinta is a great character: he’s awkward and kind of introverted and weird, because he spends a lot of time alone, but he's also a kind person, and he has a generous spirit, and I think that all of that came through really well. I loved that he and Achi kind of came into their powers in parallel and then worked together to figure out how to use them and what they meant. They got a lot of good additional mind reading jokes and humor out of Jinta, both in his scenes with Achi, where they would slyly touch each other and then have mind conversations, which eventually Karan caught on to, and that was also hilarious [laughs].
With Min and Jinta, I liked how much in this version that was about Min figuring out what he wanted to do with his life, whether or not he should continue to pursue his passion of dancing, and through his relationship with Jinta, getting encouragement, finding new confidence, and figuring out how to do that in a way that he felt like he could make a living from. And I thought that nicely supported the themes that were going on with Achi and Karan, also learning to communicate with each other and care for each other and support each other through new opportunities.
This show also did something really interesting with Pai and Rock. One of the big reservations when this adaptation was announced was that in the Japanese live action, Fujisaki was an aro-ace woman. She explicitly identified that way, it was plotline of the show. And I just knew that in Thailand, they were gonna put the same character in a romantic relationship, cause Thailand loves side couples and they just can't let anybody end the show single, even people who are supposed to be single [laughs] according to their identities. And so I was dreading that, honestly, I was like, ‘they're gonna have Pai get into a romance with Rock, I'm gonna hate it.’
But you know what? I didn’t hate it. The way that they got them together in the end was really sensitive, I think, to the fandom that they were clearly aware was out there hoping to see this character retain some of that aro-ace rep that was so meaningful to people in the Japanese live action. So I thought they were really respectful of it, I thought they did a great job with it. I think even though they got together in the end, there's still a very clear aro-ace read on Pai, and I like them together. Their scenes were fun, they have a good easy chemistry and charm, even if it doesn't feel particularly sexually charged.
And I thought that Rock and Pai were both as well, great supporting characters in the narrative. Their connection supported the story when it needed to. All of these side characters came together really well in a way that never distracted from, and always bolstered the main narrative, which is the most important thing to me for side characters.
NiNi
When Sing Harit picks up Tay Tawan and runs off with him while he wais at the client —
Shan
[laughs] It was perfect!
NiNi
[laughs] He literally just picked him up off the ground and just runs away!
Shan
He was so good in this role, he was perfect.
Ben
I'm glad we get to keep Sing. I've been watching that man for nine years.
Shan
He always brings something great to every show he's in.
Ben
So, I am a fan of original Cherry Magic adaptation Tsuge and Minato. I like how extra Tsuge is. Asaka Kodai: I like the way he played Tsuge. I like how he focused on how weird Tsuge is, and how passionate he is about things. I like Jinta as a take on that character…I appreciate why people like him more. I don't think I like him more? But I like them both specifically.
I like the Tsuge character, and I like how in the three versions of him I've seen adapted now, each adaptation has approached him. I genuinely enjoyed the version of Tsuge and Minato we got in Jinta and Min. I really liked the way they played together. I don't necessarily think Mark succeeded at all of Min, but I really like the way he and Junior work together.
I like Rock in this version because Rokkaku is an aggravating character, intentionally, in the Cherry Magic story. He is far less annoying in this version than he is in Japanese versions of this character.
I liked Pai in this one, I like the corrective fujoshi behavior that they were doing with her. I was worried at first when they leaned into the fact that Fujisaki is a shipper who has been shipping Adachi and Kurosawa for a very long time [laughs]. I like the way the Thai show ends up using that. I like the presentation of her as, ‘you can help your ship when they need to overcome an obstacle, but their moments don't belong to you.’ I loved her, genuinely. And I liked — what was her name? The manager's character?
NiNi
How could you forget my girl Dujdao?
Ben
I really liked the way they made the office manager kind of like a…auntie figure to a lot of them.
NiNi
I love how Achi accidentally brushes against her, and hears her positive thoughts about him. Because that's not a moment that they had to put in there. But I thought that it was really nice and important that Achi got to hear how much she truly cares about him.
Shan
We didn't mention the other coworkers who came at the very end of the story, when Achi traveled, but there was a whole new crew of colleagues that he got to meet on his one-month assignment at another branch. They started that episode with a little bit of anxiety around, you know, are they gonna be mean to Achi? Are they gonna pick on him? Do they think he's a snooty city person? Are they going to be homophobic?
I love that they just turned out to be like, a good group of dudes who were pretty good at their job, needed a little help getting set up, and once Achi proved that he was there to help them and he was competent, they completely accepted him and they were lovely to him. The show is just like—everybody was trying their best all the way through and I really like that. With one exception.
NiNi
Let's talk about that exception now, let's talk about the dreaded episode 8.
Shan
Dreaded is the right phrase.
Ben
My thing is, if you're going to add to Cherry Magic, why would you add workplace sexual assault? Why would you make the boss worse? The boss is really good prior to episode 8 and he's really good after episode 8. I don't understand why in episode 8 they would have him put some sort of bullshit ‘employees can't date each other’ rule into play, and be like, ‘Alright gays: if you can prove that you are economically viable to me by hitting an unrealistic sales target and whoring yourselves out to shitty clients, maybe then I will consider letting you two homos date each other.’
I hated that. I hated that Karan felt like he had to go face her again, I hated that the boss knew it, and sat with Achi to be like, ‘how do you feel about that, bro?’ And then there's like, this whole sequence where she further tries to embarrass him, but then the boss decides to be like, ‘No, I have morals.’ Where were they 40 minutes ago? I just did not like the inclusion of any of that.
It sucked too, because it was a holding pattern episode for Achi and Karan and the crew around them. Nobody really grew as a result of the events that happened there, and it just made me really resent the boss as a character. After that episode, he has a completely reasonable professional response to Achi clearly being frustrated with his role at the company. Achi, who—Karan has shown him through the course of the season—is actually a really good and really valuable employee whose efforts have gone maybe unnoticed, but that's because he's shy. And so when he recognizes that Achi is struggling professionally and wants to maybe do more, he gives him a very reasonable opportunity. Has very reasonable expectations about it, does not withhold how difficult the position may be, and has a reasonable expectation for Achi to make a decision about it.
It was really frustrating for me to try and reconcile that version of a fairly sensible boss, who is trying to give an employee an opportunity to succeed professionally, with the guy who we got in episode 8.
Shan
It felt wrong, it didn't feel like it was of a piece with the rest of the story. We found out pretty quickly that it was not from the source material, and it was an original episode that they've decided to write because they think they needed to fill a little bit of time. It's the one blemish on the show which was otherwise so wonderful, and so it just kind of sucks that they made this choice and tarnished things a little bit by doing such an ugly extra subplot, that just wasn't needed and didn't do anything for the story.
NiNi
In the end, I'm glad it was just a subplot. And it is, to my mind, pretty easily excisable.
Ben
We just deleted the episode. Boop!
Shan
Just pretended it didn't happen and carried on, and that worked great for me personally. [Shan and Ben laugh]
01:13:51 - CM: Ratings
Ben
I will say at this point, before we get to rating that this is now my default Cherry Magic version.
Shan
Same.
Ben
I think the Thai show feels complete in a way that the Japanese experience didn't. And that's…honestly, for me, reinforced by the anime that's running simultaneously right now. What I am enjoying with the two active adaptations right now is the very different approaches to the characters.
Karan is really sensitive to Achi and Achi is really sensitive to him in a way that I find really useful in the story, but there's a chippiness to the Japanese anime version of these characters. They are not as emotionally intelligent, they have a temper about them, there's a little bit of selfishness. Like, I think Adachi’s kind of a dick in this one, he complains about people being irritating normies a lot in a way that I find very amusing. And Kurosawa’s far more possessive—internally, he doesn't express it externally that often—in a way that I find lands more correctly for him, in comparison to maybe the way Keita Machida played Kurosawa and the way they presented him.
I really like the Thai localization of the Cherry Magic story here, and I think it exists very peacefully alongside the current Japanese anime version and the source material, and I think it sits favorably against the original Japanese version.
The intent of the powers to enable greater empathy and better communication between people lands far more consistently in the Thai version. I am really, truly glad that they actually did this and did a good job with it. We did not have high hopes for this motherfucker when they told us about it, and this ended up being one of the most pleasant experiences we've had in genre in a really long time.
NiNi
So, ratings. Shan, you go first: what's your rating for Cherry Magic Thailand?
Shan
I gave this show a 9.5. Could have been a 10 if not for that episode 8, but episode 8 exists, unfortunately, so it's a 9.5 for me. I found it to be such a good time, such a well-executed story. I think it was a masterful adaptation. It did such a good job taking this Japanese story and translating it into something that felt of a piece with Thai culture. The performances were excellent. The whole production was great. I loved how thoughtful everything was. It was such a good show for me. I wish I could go back to before I watched it, and watch it again and be delighted anew.
NiNi
Ben, how about you?
Ben
Similarly, I gave it a 9.5; I think this was an excellent experience. I think it was really enjoyable week to week, and this is what I want out of my BL TV viewing experience. I got to look forward to it every week, and I walked away from it satisfied. One of my favorite TV experiences is when a show is really good, without me instantly yearning for more. I had a really great anticipation of it when a Saturday morning rolled around, and I felt really good for the rest of the Saturday after watching it, and I didn't feel like I was missing something all week because it wasn't on. It was something that I really looked forward to on Saturdays. That is the ideal TV show experience, for me. And I don’t get to have that very often. I really, truly appreciate it that this show was one of the better or best week-to-week viewing experiences I've had for years.
9.5 for episode 8.
NiNi
I scored the show a 9.75.
Ben
Oh my god.
Shan
[laughs] Wait, are we allowed to do .25?
Ben
We're not. She can do it, though. [laughs]
Shan
She’s cheating!
NiNi
I am calling producer privilege to give it a 9.75! No, but the subplot in episode 8 really is a ding, but also I really loved this show. The ding had to be dinged, but I will find it very easy to excise that subplot from my memory of the show and move on. Also, I didn't have to sit in it for a week like you guys did because I was binging it, so it's easier for me, I think, to just kind of be like, pfft! Over that.
Ben
Let me tell you, that was a difficult week for us.
Shan
It was a bad week. We were scared.
Ben
We have been in this position with Thai BL where things are going great, and then episode 8 rolls around and like, oh, here we go. That was not a great week with this show’s experience. We were not really anticipating—we were hoping it wouldn't be shit, picking up with the cliffhanger of Achi revealing his powers to Karan. That was a good choice, that allowed us to focus on the future, not the past.
NiNi
And then you were immediately rewarded in episode 9 with the kiss!
Shan
Sure were!
Ben
And then they reminded me of the boss's bullshit in the finale. He's like, I'm throwing away my stupid policy. I'm like, ‘why would you bring that back up?’
Shan
Don’t bring it up! We’re trying to pretend it didn't happen!
Ben
I had just forgiven you, you motherfucker. Shut the fuck up. [all laugh]
NiNi
All right. All right. [laughs] OK, so 9.5, 9.5, 9.75 fine, it gets a 9.5 from The Conversation.
Ben
We highly recommend it! It is a good viewing experience.
Shan
Everyone should watch it.
NiNi
Fantastic show.
01:19:34 - The Pillars: Overall Thoughts
NiNi
OK, so we've just spent the last — I don't know how much time this is going to be edited—
Ben
It's going to be a long edit for you, that's for damn sure. [laughs]
NiNi
We have just spent the last maybe two-ish hours talking about our OGs, and the stuff that they've been in this year. OG to new G, so to speak. Let's talk a little bit about the pillars, about the experience of watching these people do what they know how to do really well at this point. Shan, what's your experience been like?
Shan
It was so lovely for me. I am an OffGun and a TayNew girlie. I have been a fan, I love those pairs. I am not a big fan of the branded pair system, to say the least—I think that it can be really damaging sometimes in the Thai media landscape, but I think that these two pairs have worked together for a really long time and they've figured out what works well for them. And they have also gone off and done other things, they don't only work together making BLs. All of these four actors have very full careers. And so I'm very happy that they were able to bring them back and pair them with such great projects.
Candidly, these are my two favorite Thai shows of this entire season. They knew what they were about, they executed them really well, and they used the pairs at the center of them to all the best of their abilities and their strength. I'm glad to see that they're planning to continue to work together. Both TayNew and OffGun have announced their next projects already for 2024, and I'm excited to see more adult BL from these guys.
Ben
To be clear, we are not certain that Peaceful Property or whatever it's going to be called is actually going to be a BL.
Shan
I don't need them to make out to enjoy their presence together, so I'll be happy either way.
NiNi
I don't care if it's a BL—I would prefer it to be BL, but Peaceful Property just looks like a good-ass time, so I'm going to enjoy that. I wasn't planning to watch The Trainee, but after Cooking Crush I'm gonna watch The Trainee. I've dialed in to the OffGun of it in this particular direction. I just like Off doing comedy.
Ben
He is good at comedy.
Shan
So good at it
NiNi
I really enjoy it. Not only watch him doing comedy, but watch him doing comedy now. Because he has improved, he has grown, he's really dialed into what he's good at, and he can portray it in a way that I don't think he used to be able to. So, I am looking forward to watching The Trainee definitely.
News news, apparently the third of our pillars coming back is a possibility? So there are three OG pillars for GMMTV. Like we said, OffGun, TayNew, and the third OG pillar was Krist and Singto. We got word recently that Singto’s coming back to GMMTV? So that's an interesting thing. I don't know necessarily that there's going to be new KristSingto stuff, but…
Shan
Krist has already teased it on social media.
Ben
Krist has teased it, but he said that they won't tell him information because he usually leaks it.
Shan
Right. But he said he wants to do another project with Singto. They've put it out there, maybe as a little bit of a test balloon to see if people are interested in it. So I wouldn't be surprised if we find out next year that they're going to be doing another BL together.
NiNi
I wouldn't be surprised if we find that out in April, when the Part 2 of the GMMTV thing comes out.
Ben
[sigh] OK, I'll talk about this. We need to own that has not been a good run for Singto, for about three to four years now. He hasn't really had a solid win in a while. And I don't know that I want him and Krist back together. This is such a weird choice to make, coming off of Be My Favorite where I was like, ‘OK, Krist, you've grown as a performer. I thought you were used well here, I thought your reputation, whether it be right or wrong was used well here. And I'm willing to put all this aside and move forward.’
And now I'm feeling triggered [laughs] by the news that he and Singto will be back together. I'm not necessarily thrilled about it. Like, yeah, we had a lot of skepticism about Cherry Magic, blah, blah, blah, coming into this. And that ended up being fine. But like… [sigh]
Shan
None of my reservations were about the pairs, though. It's all about the material. Here, Krist and Singto don't have good chemistry.
Ben
I don't think they do at all.
Shan
We know that. They did two, three shows together over several years of working together. Did not manage to produce believable chemistry as a pair.
Ben
I'm not keen on it.
NiNi
OK, so here's what I'm gonna say.
Ben
Go ahead, bestie.
NiNi
I have been wrong about all of their recent projects. I haven't watched any really old things or stuff since he left GMMTV, but in terms of Be My Favorite, in terms of Cooking Crush, in terms of Cherry Magic Thailand, I have been wrong. And so I am willing to give any new KristSingto project a shot.
Shan
Oh I'm going to watch it. If they make it, I'm going to watch it. I need to know.
Ben
It's not about whether or not we're going to watch it.
Shan
Yeah.
NiNi
[laughs] They're all like, ‘oh, no, we're watching it! Nobody said we weren't gonna watch it.’ [laughs]
Shan
We will be watching it and we will be having takes! That is what we will be doing. I continue to be skeptical about the two of them being able to generate believable chemistry together. Maybe they could do a show that's not a BL. Maybe they could try that.
Ben
I won't watch that, that's for sure! [Shan laughs]
NiNi
We're talking about OG to new G. Maybe we could do some mix-match merry-go-round with Perth and Chimon.
Shan
I'd be OK with that!
Ben
Oh my god.
NiNi
Get some new pairings out of it.
Ben
There are no more—I—why are we giving Perth and Chimon another ch—Why would you bring them up in this conversation?
NiNi
Mix match merry go round! Mix up the pairs! Maybe they'll work better with other people.
Shan
I think Krist and Singto both need to be paired with strong screen partners who can bring that chemistry piece, because neither of them is particularly good at it on their own, and together it just doesn't happen. I don't know how much of this we should even allow to air. We're going to get shot by their fans.
Ben
I do not care about them. You can be mad.
NiNi
I don’t care [laughs].
Shan
What is their fandom called?
NiNi
It's Peraya.
Shan
Peraya that's right.
NiNi
Peraya ask me how I know. I don't know how. I know. I just pick up these things by osmosis.
Shan
I am not a Peraya. I want this to be very clear.
Ben
I am not either.
NiNi
But like, OK, so we've established that Perth needs a good lead and Chimon needs a good follow, and Krist is, I think, a better follow than a lead, and Singto is a better lead than I think a follow. So maybe they mix them up, maybe they get something good out of it.
Ben
Mm, anyway. So. [laughs]
NiNi
Y'all are mean to my baby Perth and I'm not having it.
Shan
NiNi I appreciate the spirit of this brainstorm. I think it's worth a try [laughs]
Ben
I don't. [laughs]
NiNi
Perth, if you ever listen to this, don't listen to the mean people. It's OK. I love you.
Ben
Look, I love Perth. But it's not been a good year for him. I'm sorry, baby boy.
Shan
I think it's been very cool, though, sincerely, to see the OGs come back around. I like that we're no longer saying [laughs] that BL is a young man's game, you gotta get out when you turn 30. I like that we're letting some of GMMTV's older talent headline these shows and that we're getting some shows about adults. That's all super welcome, and I think it's really nice too, to see pairs like Tay and New and Off and Gun, who are real veterans with handling all of this stuff around making BLs together—handling the BGP, handling all of the fan attention, they do it with a lot of grace and very professionally, in a way that I think is helpful to see a model for for some of the younger pairs.
I think it's helpful for fans also to be reminded of how they should engage with actors who are doing their job when they're making these shows. GMMTV is going to continue to dominate Thai BL for the foreseeable future, so I think it's good that they're bringing these veterans back and doing good work with them.
Ben
I agree. I think OffGun and TayNew have been on the forefront of the development of Thai BGP for a long time, and it's really good to see them seem confident and comfortable about it at this point. Both of these pairs have had some negative experiences with fan behavior, so. I'm very glad that those two pairs were able to continue working together, continue to make projects together, and in this particular case, deliver two of the most satisfying viewing experiences we've had in the last three to four months. I'm pleased.
Shan
They killed it. Amazing work.
NiNi
I, too, am pleased. I wasn't in the OG thing. I wasn't shooting with y'all in the gym then, but I'm here now and what I saw this time around I truly enjoyed. I'm never going to be a babii. I'm not going to be a a polca. I'm never going to be a peraya. I'm just not a fan like that. I fan, I don't stan, I always say, except for, [laughs] you know, the large ones.
Shan
For a couple exceptions.
NiNi
Except for the bigguns. The pillars thing has always been like the super weird thing for me, and this is the first experience that I've had with it that it wasn't weird and slightly creepy for me, which I truly enjoyed. So yeah, good job, boys. Excellent work, 10 out of 10, no notes.
So, that is going to wrap us up on our pillars episode: we out! Say bye to the people, Shan.
Shan
Goodbye people.
NiNi
Ben, say bye to the people.
Ben
Peace!

Ch 1 ~ Ch 2 ~ Ch 3 ~ Ch 4 ~ Ch 5 ~ Ch 6 ~ Ch 7 ~ Ch 8 ~ Ch 9 ~ Ch 10 ~ Ch 11 ~ Ch 12 ~ Ch 13 ~ Ch 14
Tumblr media
It is three days before the Mountain arrives in King’s Landing. The Trial by Combat had been announced throughout the capital on the day it was agreed and the days since had been dedicated to the building of a great arena for the event. Every noble in the keep thought of it as no more than sport — every noble except the members of your party and Tyrion Lannister himself, who all had far more at stake. For the group of you, the days of anticipation have been agony.
“They are simply playing a game.” Oberyn hisses, standing in nothing but his breeches as he sharpens the spear he wishes to take into the ring. He’s already discarded several, broken in training, though he is now resting until the time where he faces Gregor. “Wishing to gain the upper hand by delaying, thinking I will become impatient.” He scoffs. “As if I have not waited years for this.”
“They have no idea of your true determination, lover.” Ellaria has seen so many shades and versions of this need for revenge that no part of it could surprise her anymore. She knows it could have been the singular focus that drive him mad, and that it is oddly fortunate that he escaped that fate.
“They do not know me or the Dornish need for justice.” He muses grimly. “They will discover it, publicly.”
“And then we will be rid of this place.” You have Margaery’s hand in yours as the two of you sit on the nearby chaise together, and you squeeze it gently in your fingers. It has only been a few days but the news of her marriage to the new Dornish lord had caused an outpouring of sentiment against her family and her specifically. Thankfully, Olenna Tyrell seemed more amused by it than anything and promised her granddaughter that they would all forget when the next scandal broke.
“I am looking forward to seeing Dorne.” She admits as she glances over to where Raeden is sprawled with Ellaria on another chaise. “I have heard about it and wish to marvel at its bright beauty myself. Especially the Water Gardens.”
“You could have your honeymoon there,” Ellaria suggests, leaning over to kiss Raeden and glad to talk about something other than tomorrow’s fight. “Locked up in your rooms fucking to your heart’s content until you are full of your lord’s babe, and then you can rest in the Gardens for all your pregnancy.”
“Perhaps I can also sample the prince’s cock once I am carrying Raeden’s heir.” She wears a small smirk as she greedily watches the lean lines of the older man. She’s sucked his cock, several times, but like Raeden with you, he would not risk her husband’s true heir being called into question.
“I would very much like to watch that,” you hum, turning your head to nip at her neck and pulling the younger woman into your lap. The two of you have become much closer in just a few days, much to the delight of your husbands.
“I will be very eager to sample your cunt.” Oberyn chuckles, looking up from his spear. “Although tonight.” He grunts, his eyes dark and lusty when he looks at Raeden. “I want to have your husband tonight.”
The statement hangs in the air between all of you, and Raeden is the first to nod. “You will. You will have me.”
It has been a long time coming, Margaery knows this, even with as short a time as she has been tangled in this group. Not once has she felt slighted because she does not bear any marks on her skin from the four of you. “It will be a night to celebrate.” She decides. “In anticipation of your victory.”
“You will witness true victory tomorrow.” Ellaria agrees, fire in her eyes as she gazes up at Oberyn. “They all will.”
He’s sure of himself, almost to the point of brashness, but he has also commanded his own company with the Second Sons. Survived the fighting pits and his reputation was well earned. Still, he is grateful for the support of his soulmates and his lovers. “Yes they will.”
“We should feast tonight.” The idea had formed in your mind yesterday and lingered, something that you have learned to pay attention to. The idea that it could – however unlikely he seems to think the possibility – be your last night with your husband makes you want to sob like you have just heard the news that he would be champion all over again.
Oberyn turns towards you, watching you for a moment before he nods. “Get dressed, Princess.” He decides. “You and I will go to the market and order our feast.”
There is no reason to point out that Cal or Leyth could easily see the Dornishman in the market. Everyone here knows that. But he wants to spend time with you, and you want more than anything to hold his arm while you walk and pretend it is simply a normal day. “I will only take a few minutes,” you promise him, pulling yourself up off the chaise and away from a reluctant-to-let-go Margaery.
“Take your time.” He smirks. “Wear something beautiful.” He wants you to be seen, wants to be seen with you. Firmly believing appearances can affect the memory of the day.
“I have just the thing.” Enough weeks had passed in the Capitol that you had been able to order gowns from a dressmaker with knowledge of Dornish fashion, and you had intended to save it for your arrival in your new home, but this seems far more important. You disappear into the next room to extract it from your trunk with a smile. Oberyn will be quite surprised.
Oberyn sets the spear down and walks over to the table that has a bowl of clean water with soap and cloths next to it. As much sex as everyone has been indulging in, it had seemed prudent to keep the water on hand. He starts to bathe his chest, sweaty from the day and wishing to freshen up while he waits.
The group of you have all packed. Determined to leave King’s Landing in just two days’ time, most things have been put away for the journey. What is left to amuse yourselves with is sex, books from the keep’s library — and usually more sex. The difference is only when Oberyn and Raeden are in the practice ring, but when they return they are usually ravenous for company.
It takes little more than ten minutes for you to emerge from the chamber in the gown that you had carefully selected the colors and fabrics of weeks earlier — gold trim making the colors of fire seem to dance with every step you take. The sheer outer layer sparkles and shines, and the layer underneath flows while still showing off your figure. It preserves that feeling of modesty that you are accustomed to with significantly less fabric and a form unmistakably Dornish flare. Even your slippers are more like the ones Ellaria wears each day, leather platforms tying halfway up your calves with amber lacing. “Are you ready, my prince?”
“Star.” Oberyn’s eyes widen and he groans as he takes in your appearance. “I will have to wear my sword so no one could try to steal you from me.” He hums, cock twitching in his breeches. “The seamstress who made this for you deserves every coin you paid her and then a hefty sum.”
"There are others," you promise him, glad to see the light in his eyes even over something as simple as a dress. "I gave her double her fee when I saw how fine the work was. Do you...do you truly like it? I know you have said many times that you wished I wore more Dornish style gowns."
“If I could show you now how much I like it, we would not feast tonight.” He growls, fingers tracing over your bare shoulder and sighing softly at your softness.
"You will show me later." Later, when he has all of you at his beck and call for whatever it is he might desire. But for now you take his hand and kiss his palm tenderly. "Let us go and walk. We will show the capitol that Dorne is not afraid."
“That’s my girl.” He curls his arm up and wraps your hand around it, looking at Margaery, Raeden and Ellaria. “We will be back. And I will want all of us in bed. So make sure you do not tire yourselves out.” He chuckles.
"I swear it," Ellaria chuckles, with one hand over her heart. "I will teach our newlyweds about edging if they need attention."
Margaery tilts her head curiously and smirks at Ellaria. “What is that?” She asks innocently.
The chuckle turns to a throaty, pleased laugh, and Ellaria sits up to kiss Oberyn before bringing Margaery into her arms. "Go and enjoy yourself, lover," she tells him with a lascivious grin. "We will be well occupied here."
“Come, Star.” Oberyn smiles as he guides you out of the chambers and immediately runs into one of Cersei’s servants. “Splendid.” He hums, leaning into the girl. “More water is needed.” He tells her. “There will be an orgy in these rooms tonight.”
She looks positively affronted by the notion but nods nervously, scurrying away as fast as her feet will carry her. "I suppose it does not matter that Cal could easily have fetched our water?" You ask, raising one eyebrow at him as you continue down the hallway. "You would far rather that it get back to Cersei's ears."
“Absolutely.” He chuckles and starts the slow, unconcerned stroll with you towards the front doors of the Keep. “She will either stay far away or have to come interrupt. Either way, I will now that she is wondering who is in the chambers moaning.”
"Whomever we want to be." A few months into your arrangement - and your marriage - it is safe to say that you are far more comfortable with yourself and with sex than ever before. "And that bothers her, too."
“I would like Cal and Leyth with us tonight, my love.” He ventures, patting your hand. “Do you have any objections? Only if they wish to join.” He won’t force them to, of course. He wouldn’t do that, but he wants to touch them again and tonight seems to be a fine night to do so.
"No objections at all." He could ask you for the moon and you would only tell him that you need to find a ladder tall enough. "They have missed being invited to your bed."
“As long as you are comfortable with it.” There has been plenty to keep him occupied and satisfied throughout the last weeks, especially discovering the relationship with you, so he had not ventured to invite anyone else.
“My love,” you squeeze his arm gently under your hand as you walk together. “There is very little you could ask for tonight that I would hesitate to grant you. I hope you understand that.”
Exiting the keep, Oberyn is quiet for a little while, thinking of what he wishes to say. It is only when the crowds begin to gather, farther away from the castle does he begin. “My love,” he sighs softly. “I have sent word to my brother.” He tells you. “Informing him of our valid marriage and my expectant heir.”
“That is good.” Once, he had thought to breeze into Sunspear and amuse himself with informing Doran of what was technically your elopement. The fact that he has done otherwise is sobering, but somehow comforting in its realism. “I am sure he will be very glad of the news when it arrives, considering how upset you were when you left Dorne.”
“Word would have already reached him.” He tells you quietly. “I sent a raven the day I took on being Tyrion’s champion.” He admits, looking past the merchants stalls as they come into view towards the harbor. “I also made sure that Raeden’s house is secure. My brother would do right by him.”
“Thank you, my love. I know it means the world to him.” It sounds as though Oberyn has been getting his affairs in order, and the implications of that make your shoulders tighten and your limbs feel heavy as you walk together. Tomorrow he will fight to the death to honor and revenge this sister, and the terrifying truth is that he could be the one to lose. As cocky - and as talented a fighter - as he is, Oberyn is not a stupid man. “Should the need come, I will make sure your Sand Snakes are as well cared for as you could ever wish. Ellaria and I will not let them want for anything.”
“I will be there to see them.” Oberyn promises. “However.” He slides his arm down to take your hand in his and bring it up to his lips. “Every Dornish lord here, all their men, will see you safely from the city.” He promises. After he had accepted the role, he had gone to see them, without Raeden so he could speak frankly to them. He wanted to make sure the other lords would wholly accept your lover as Lord Sunstone. They were happy to have a new lord amongst the ranks, especially one who chose Dorne. “You need not fear any abuse.”
“I do not.” And that, thankfully, you can count on the truth. The lords of Dorne had been surprised by your sudden appearance in Oberyn’s life but accepted you fully. “And I know that you will do everything in your power to come home with us. I do not doubt that even for a moment.” You do not doubt it, but you have learned a healthy fear of the unknown.
“I will.” He agrees, squeezing your hand and smirking at you. “Let is plan this feast. I wish to make sure that we have a night to remember.”
“It would be impossible to forget a night with you.” As sentimental a thing as it is to say, you truly do mean it. Oberyn has changed so much about your life and all of it has been for the better — how could you forget even a moment of that?
“I wanted to tell you this privately.” He admits quietly. “I know that you are scared and I will win, but I thought it would making you feel better. In case the worst happens.”
“I am scared.” There is no use denying that and you would not be cruel enough to disrespect him like that. “But only because I know that life is unpredictable. And I am grateful that you are open with me. That you understand it is not that I do not believe in you. Because that is the furthest from the truth.”
“All men must have some fear.” Oberyn admits quietly. “Do not have fear is to not wish to live. And then you have already died.” He watches the people that move past the two of you and hums. “The true test of a man is conquering that fear and not letting it turn him into a coward. Using the fear for his own purposes.”
“I will have to remember that.” In the meantime, because the fear you have is for him, you lace your fingers together tightly as you walk. “May I ask you something, love?”
“Anything.” He insists. “You know that, my love. I will hide nothing from you.”
“You may object to the request and I would understand that.” He nods when your eyes meet his and you return the gesture, biting your lip slightly. “I—it is only that…I cannot stop thinking of the baby.” So much so that your hand has been unconsciously resting on the side of your still unchanged belly as you walk. “If anything were to happen to you tomorrow…I wondered if we might be able to choose a name? You should know your ninth daughter’s name, if the worst happens.”
“I think we should also pick out a son’s name.” Oberyn grunts, even though he is smiling. “For the boy the babe might be.”
“I think if I were to bear you a son, no one would believe he was yours,” you half-joke, glad that Oberyn is humoring your anxieties and making the topic sweet instead of calling out your nerves.
“They will when he looks just like me and fights at the first insult to his mother.” He predicts with a proud grin.
“Perhaps that would be enough.” You smile at the thought, though it is a thin thing. Somehow in your heart you know that carrying another of his daughters is more likely than anything. Still, it is best to be prepared. “But you would not have him named for you.”
“I believe the boy needs to forge his own reputation, not live in the shadow of mine.” Names have meaning in this time, and he would not saddle his son with his. Giving him freedom to be whomever he chose to be. “That is why I would not name a son after me.”
“Then you would not want to name him after any family? Our only after you?” The logic does make sense to you, and you nod as you walk. The marketplace is open and though people may stare you have learned to pay them no mind.
“Only after myself.” He pauses and turns towards you. “But I forbid you naming the child after your bitch of a mother.” He warns, not wishing the revisiting the past every time you looks upon a girl with that name.
“I would rather name her after my father’s soulmate that I never even met then name her after the woman who abused me,” you agree, shaking your head sadly.
“Apologies, my love.” Oberyn leans in to kiss your lips softly. “Forget I mentioned it.”
“Mentioned what?” Willing yourself to simply forget the mention of her and move on, you offer Oberyn a bright smile and steal another kiss. “I believe we were choosing names for a son?”
“Do you have any ideas?” He asks curiously. Wondering if you had imagined the names of your children before now.
"I used to tease Antony that I would name my son for him any time he did me a small favor." The sweet, nostalgic memory of an older brother doting on his younger sister brings a bittersweet smile to your face. As much as you might have told your brothers that they drove you crazy, you miss them desperately. "Anytime he did something as little as bringing me a pencil to write with, I would dramatically declare that I would honor him with naming my son Antony. It was...just a silly thing. But I suppose I never thought of anything beyond that."
“Would you wish to use that name or a piece of it?” He asks, smiling softly at the image of a young girl promising her older brother to name her son after him.
"Antony is a good name." Strong but not harsh, you had always thought it a very nice name aside from all the of the teasing. "And...Antonia is lovely, as well?"
“Naming our daughter after your brother?” He barks out a laugh even as he seriously thinks about it. “I like it.” He admits. “Antonia Martell.” He shrugs. “Rolls off the tongue better than my thought towards a name.”
"What was yours?" He has named eight daughters already, you cannot discount any ideas he might have with so much practice behind him.
“Marella.” He shrugs slightly, unconcerned. He will name the babe whatever makes you happy and be proud of it.
"Oh, that's lovely." Rolling it over in your mind though, you frown a moment later. "Although Marella Martell would be quite the tongue twister."
“Technically, she would be Princess Marella of Dorne, when people address her.” He teases. “But Antonia is much nicer.”
"I wish she was here already." It feels like a ridiculous thing to lament, but you wish it so that he could hold her. Because the fear that Oberyn might never meet his next child is creeping up your neck as if it were high tide on the rocks.
“She will come when she is ready.” Even if he teases you about giving him a male heir, he feels like you are carrying a girl. “Squawking and screaming as she shakes her fist at the world.”
You squeeze his hand again as you swallow your fears, and turn into the marketplace with him. “She will be so adored.”
“By so many.” He agrees, sighing softly. “I cannot wait to show you Dorne.”
“I hope you will show me everything.” In the weeks and months since your marriage, you have become more and more eager to see your new home. “Every time Ellaria speaks of the Water Gardens, I ache to see them.”
“We will swim in the gardens naked.” He tells you with a grin. “After the children are asleep.”
“I see you already have plans for conceiving your tenth child,” you tease, knowing he means sooner than that.
“Perhaps.” He chuckles and reaches over to rub your stomach. “I do not think we will stop at one child.”
“I certainly will not stop sharing your bed.” You could be more vulgar, but you are in public.
“It would be a dour day when you decided to stop sleeping in my bed.” He grunts. He does not think that would ever happen, despite originally thinking you would never share his bed.
“Dour would be correct,” you hum with equal dislike for the idea. “The only way it would happen would be very sad circumstances.” Very sad as in one of your deaths, and you are reminded again what tomorrow morning will bring.
“Do not think on it.” He can tell you are worrying about tomorrow again. He cannot give you more guarantees than he already has, and he will not insult you by demanding you not worry.
"I will try." Strolling together a little further, the stall where the Dornishman you have come to know as Salin sells his prepared foods is swarming with people. Since word had gotten out that Prince Oberyn enjoyed his recipes, he had been receiving more and more business.
“Salin.” Oberyn greets the man warmly, like he would any of his countrymen. “How does your day fare?”
"Very well, my prince and princess." Salin has come to recognize the sight of all of Oberyn's household, and always welcomes all of you with open arms. Today, he reaches for a fried pastry full of chopped roasted nuts, honey, and sweet dates and offers it to you. "I have heard a rumour, your Graces," he admits, smiling broadly when you accept the pastry with glee. "That you are to be congratulated?"
The prince huffs, even as he grins proudly. “Which one of them told you?” He asks, sure that Ellaria would have mentioned it since you were craving dates lately.
"I was not sworn to secrecy, so I do not fear telling you that it was your lovely paramour." He smiles even more broadly and puts one hand over his heart. "I would like to offer, if it pleases you, to send the recipe for my date cake with you when you return to Sunspear. Your cook will have no trouble recreating it, and I was told the princess enjoyed it very much."
“I would be very grateful for it.” Oberyn nods and tilts his head towards the man. “If you ever wish to come back to Dorne, I will give you a place in the palace to cook for our house.”
"You are..." Salin swallows thickly, looking between the two of you. "Your Grace is most generous." His voice wavers and his other hand comes up to his heart. "I left my mother and siblings there when I came to King's Landing and...until your patronage...did not have the money for passage to go home again."
Oberyn frowns, hating King’s Landing as much as the next Dornishman and looks towards you. “We are leaving King’s Landing. After the tournament.” He informs the merchant who has provided so many meals for his lovers and his wife. “The ship will be crowded, but I am sure we can find room for you if you wish to sail home?” He asks.
"I do." He murmurs, expression still aghast. "I wish to return home more than anything." The man looks as though he could cry, and something inside of you cracks a little, making your reach out to gently squeeze his arm in reassurance. "We had come to ask you to prepare us one last feast, but this is far better. We are happy to have you return with us."
“I-- I will prepare you the feast that would put all feasts to shame.” He agrees quickly. If he is leaving, he will need to deplete his stores. “And if your offer is genuine, I would be honored to prepare meals on the ship for your family.”
You do not even need to look over at Oberyn to know that the offer was real, but still your eyes find your husband's profile and you nod to Salin with a smile. "We will be the ones who are honoured, Salin. And thank you for this," you hold up the pastry, which you have already tried a bite of and will have demolished the sweet treat in less than another minute. "Truly, your talent is unparalleled. You either had a remarkable teacher or your talents are a gift from the gods."
“My mother.” He informs you proudly. “She runs a small tavern in Sunspear.” He beams and nods towards your pastry. “Although that is something special. It is a treat that she had made for her soulmate.” He frowns slightly but recovers to smile at the both of you.
"He had very good taste." The shadow that falls over his face does not escape you, but you do not feel your have the right to press. Instead you simply add, "And must have been a very lucky man."
“Perhaps.” That is all he will say about the man he has never met, although he looks back at the pair of you expectantly. “Do you wish me to just send whatever I make or is there something special you wish to have?” He’s not unaware that Oberyn will be in the tournament tomorrow, that he could possibly die. So tonight is a celebration feast in preparation for his victory.
"The prince favours your spicy lamb, but everything else is up to you. Whatever you feel your finest or favourite dishes are to prepare. And there are seven of us, so be generous." Everything he makes is delicious, so you have no doubt that it will all be wonderful.
Bobbling his head eagerly, Salin immediately starts to think about what he can send to the Keep. “I will have it prepared. Is there a time you will need it?”
"No sooner than usual," you assure him, knowing that your intention to eat and spend the rest of the night indulging in pleasure is shared by everyone in your small household.
“I will deliver it myself.” He promises, shaking his head when Oberyn pulls out his coin purse. “No, please. It would be my pleasure.”
"We would be remiss in offering you a place in our household and then not paying you for that talent of yours we so appreciate." The shake of your head matches his and you reach out to touch his arm again. "Please. Allow us to show you the respect you deserve."
“You are kind and gracious.” His lip trembles slightly. “My mother will be very grateful to have her oldest son back.”
Nearer now to being a mother than you ever have been before in your life, you already cannot imagine what separating from your oldest child would be like, other than being positively devastating. '"Whatever brought you to King's Landing, I hope that it was worth the trip, and that returning home will bring you just as much joy."
“My trip was in vain but I learned a valuable lesson.” He promises. “The return trip home will be much sweeter, although your patronage has made my little stand a success.”
"Perhaps the gods have given you something just as valuable that you have not yet realized." Wishing not to leave the man feeling poorly about anything at all - if you can help it - you find yourself wishing it was as easy as offering to spend time with him. To listen to his story. To find out what had happened and see if there is some way you can help. But again, you remind yourself not to force the situation. You are already giving him a way to return to his family, and that seems to be a help in its own right.
Salin nods and smiles at the Princess of Dorne and her husband. “The gods gave surely shined down in my humble soul.” He acknowledges before handing you another pastry. “For your walk, your highness.”
“You are very generous, my friend. Thank you.” With a nod of your head, you and Oberyn continue walking, leaving Salin to his work. There is much to be done before tonight, apparently, because he disappears into the back of his stall immediately. “He seems to be very glad to go home again.”
“Is there anywhere else you wish to go?” Oberyn asks you indulgently. The dress you are wearing is fine and causing many heads to turn, making him grip your hand proudly as you continue towards the water.
“I would visit every seller here just to prolong our walk,” you admit, nibbling at the treat that Salin handed you as you walk hand in hand with Oberyn. “Perhaps we could visit our smith friend once more before we leave?” An amused smile forms on your lips when his eyes slip past your face to your chest. “Or would you like to also offer passage to my dressmaker, since you seem so fond of her work?”
He snorts, and sends you an amused smirk. “If I could cart all the talented workers away from King’s Landing as a strike against the Lannisters. I would.” He jokes. “But perhaps we should see what other baubles we can purchase for amusement.”
“I know one that would amuse both you and Raeden.” You hum, making yourself walk by the bookseller’s stall without stopping. If you do, you might simply stay there the whole day. “I wonder if the goldsmith might have another necklace of thin chains for Margaery to match with myself and Ellaria.”
Oberyn grunts, his cock twitching and he hums in agreement. “It would be a very pleasant view, three gorgeous women, completely naked except for the chains around their necks.”
“It would be lovely to see.” You and Margaery seem to be the only ones who were surprised by how close you have become and how quickly, and your may or may not be looking forward to the sight yourself.
“Perhaps there is another bauble we can find for the three of you to wear tomorrow.” Oberyn muses. “I wish to see all three of you in very revealing dress. You will be on the sidelines.”
"We will wear anything you choose, love." It is very literally the least that the three of you can do, and you know that although you will all - Raeden included - be worried, you will be a united front of pride for Dorne.
“Good.” While there will be some who do not care what the lovers of Oberyn wear, just the three- four- of you being there will be an insult to the people who matter most in the private portion of this skirmish. Until he brings all their sins to the light for the Seven Kingdoms to see.
"It will be no small statement to have Margaery beside us. For the four of us to appear united in appearance as well?" It is an incredibly simple yet effective means of making your delegation seem all the more powerful, and you know that every small tactic counts. "It will disarm some of those in the capital who foolishly think Dorne to be less civilized."
“Exactly.” He is always pleased with you when you know why he is doing something. The cleverness of your minds makes him think that you would have been named your father’s heir of you had been born a man.
"Would you have us matching?" You ask him, thinking that that would take some effort to achieve by the morning. "Or wearing an emblem somehow?"
“Perhaps we will find something. If not, then there are…dresses in my trunk you could wear.” He admits with a small chuckle.
"There are more dresses in your trunks?" By this time you would have assumed that Ellaria had wore every stitch of clothing brought from Dorne to the northern capital, but apparently that assumption would be incorrect.
“If you wish to call them dresses.” He smirks. “There is more skin showing than fabric.”
"If only my belly were already swollen," you smirk up at him as you slow in your walk and come to a stop at the jeweler's stall. "That would be quite a sight to be shown off."
“One I will love to see when it happens. Especially since the dress will show off your belly.” Oberyn’s eyes narrow as he takes in the jewels on display.
"Your Graces." The man bows deeply to see you approach, the sight of the two of you together being most welcome to him. He knows it will end in a large purchase, if nothing else, and others had taken notice of the Dornish prince's patronage of his business. It had brought him enormous good fortune in the months since your first visit. "What is it you search for today?"
“Another necklace.” Oberyn informs him with a smirk. “Just like the one for my wife and my paramour. I wish to clasp it around our other lover’s neck.”
"I confess, I wondered if you might desire another." Disappearing from view for just a few seconds, the merchant comes back again with a small wooden box. He lifts the lid, showing off another glinting necklace of delicate chains. "Your reputation, after all, precedes you."
“Do you have a smaller version of this?” Oberyn asks as he traces the necklace with his fingers. “More…masculine?”
"Smaller as in…fewer strands?" The man's head tilts to one side, making sure he understands correctly.
“Fewer strands, more…” he turns to you with a frown. “I want one for Raeden.” He tells you.
"I assumed as much, when you wanted one more masculine." The expression on his face is half frustration and half plaintive, and you cup his cheek in your hand lovingly. "Do you want it to be worn under his robes tomorrow, or do you want it to be worn in bed, my love?"
“Both.” He grunts, looking at you with dark, lust filled eyes. “But I want him to wear it tomorrow. Showing on his bare chest to match your. United and under House Martell’s protection.”
"The prince desires another necklace with fewer, thicker chains," you inform the jeweler, squeezing Oberyn's hands in yours and pressing a kiss to his lips. "And it should be made to accommodate a broader chest."
The jeweler has questions but he keeps them to himself. Although the design might be on display after the custom jewelry is sold and discreetly mentioned that the Prince of Dorne bought for a male lover. It might be of interest to the right discreet party.
“It will be needed by tonight.” Neither you nor Oberyn would be willing to wait until morning and risk not having it be ready, but you are certain that Oberyn will want Raeden to wear the chains tonight, as well.
“Of course.” He knows now that the prince will not blink at the cost so he does not even warn him about the extra price for expedited work. The prince is a man who wants what he wants when he wants it with no regard to cost.
“What other new baubles have you? Any of your clever wife’s designs?” The puzzle ring that you gave to Oberyn is a favorite, and your eyes start to search through the trays of fine pieces right away.
“There is a wide selection.” He agrees eagerly, rushing over to show them to you. “Your interest and admiration has made her designs improve and her love of it increase.”
“I am very glad to hear it.” Oberyn has begun searching a different part of the stall, and you follows the merchant’s lead to look at the designs that his wife has made. “What is the piece she is most proud of? I wish to see it.”
“There is a bracelet design that my wife is very pleased with.” The latest designed may have been with a slight Dornish flair due to the Prince’s patronage. The bracelets have several bangles wove in between each other and can be pulled apart, but when they are in a solid mass, they give the illusion of being one solid piece, the bursting sun of Dorne etched into the gold.
“Oh, she is clever!” You hum happily when the merchant presents you with the multi-strand bracelet. “And your craftsmanship is exquisite, ser. It seems that no matter you you make, you and your wife are quite the formidable team.”
Delighted that you like it, he moves to grab the other ones. "I took the liberty of making several." He informs you. "Because I know that your group likes to have matching sets."
“We certainly do.” The stone in the middle of each Dornish sun is the only difference between the bracelets - one deep green, one pink-red, one orange, one yellow, one milky white, one rich blue, and one clear purple. They are stunning together and you beckon Oberyn closer to look. “There are seven, my love.” Your face shines with delight.
"Why seven?" Oberyn asks curiously. He could see if there were eight, for his daughters or two because of his last order of necklaces.
“You, Raeden, and Cal.” You have three bracelets beside your right hand, and then beside your left you point out the other four. “Ellaria, me, Margaery, and Leyth.”
"No, my love." He grunts. "I was asking the jeweler why he crafted seven bracelets."
The jeweler in question blushes, clearing his throat at the prince’s pointed attention. He was not going to call attention to the number after you seemed so delighted with the fact that there were seven. “In truth, your Grace?” He would shove his hands in his pockets in embarrassment if he had any. “There are three or four more being finished just this day. I thought to have a wide collection of colors for your Graces to choose from, that is all.”
"I will take them all." Oberyn decides, looking back at you to find you smiling down at the bracelet with a dreamy expression on your face. "What do you think, my love? For any others we might bring into our fold?" He hums. "Or perhaps..." He slides his hand around your waist and your stomach. "Perhaps as gifts for our children."
“They seem fitting for your girls, don’t you think?” If there are so many, that is. The idea of more cannot be banished from your mind. You must remember that Oberyn has a plan. “Hopefully they all have different favourite colors.”
The mention of ‘his girls’ makes Oberyn’s head snap back to the jeweler. “These bracelets.” He tells him. “I want eight more. Except instead of bursting suns, I want snakes. Coiled snakes with the different colored jewel in the eye.”
“It…is too much to do in one night.” The jeweler tells him with obvious regret and just a touch of fear. “Perhaps it could be done in two if everyone worked through the night…but I know that you are not one to wait, your Grace.”
"We will be leaving for Dorne in two days." He tells the jeweler. "Have them done by the time the ship leaves the harbor and I will give you a bonus to make it worth the effort."
“Yes, your Grace.” The man bows rather frantically, scooping up the few things that he had already talked to the two of you about, and dashing into the back of his stall. When his apprentice appears just a few moments later, you smile with the knowledge that he is going straight to work. It is not even the man’s own son he has sent to man his stall. He will be working well into the night.
"I will give my sand snakes the bracelets he is crafting now." He tells you with a proud smirk. "They will love them." He had been searching for gifts for his girls, always bringing them something when he has to travel and the bracelets would be perfect.
“They will make a beautiful gift, my love.” For his eight - soon, nine - children, a token from the trip when their father wed will hopefully be something to celebrate and not frown upon. “They will look well with the necklaces that Ellaria is bringing to each of your daughters.”
“She loves all of them.” He hums happily, smiling softly. “You will love them too, I hope.”
“I have no doubt.” One of your hands rests gently on his arm and you smile. “I cannot wait to meet them.”
“They will be waiting for us when we arrive in Sunspear.” He informs you with complete surety. “Expect many questions.”
“I expect they will have many.” Just imagining it makes you giggle, thinking of the youngest ones especially. The older girls you will be able to be more straightforward with. “Luckily we are bringing them a new grandfather as well, who will dote on them endlessly no matter who their mother is.” Being able to acquaint your father with the situations that resulted in all of Oberyn’s daughters’ births, he has been excited to meet them ever since. Once he saw how loving your husband can be and how happy you are, nothing else mattered.
“He had been surprisingly welcoming.” He had anticipated a bit of distance from his wife’s father, but he has been to dinner several times. “He will enjoy Dorne.” He frowns slightly. “I have written my brother about Marlee as well. To see if we can find her.”
“You are entirely too good, my love.” Losing her — and discovering why he had lost her — has been a reopened wound for your father, who has clung to all news and stories of Dorne in response. As though he might hear her name in one of them unwittingly.
“There is no stone I would leave unturned if my soulmate was lost to me.” He tells you, his hand sliding along your arm to tangle his fingers with yours.
“I believe I can confidently say that neither Ellaria nor I will ever leave your side.” Still, your fingers tangling tightly in his as though trying to convince him. “There is nothing in the Seven Hells that could ever tempt me away, my love.”
“That is good.” He squeezes your hand and smirks. “I will be very satisfied with being surrounded by my soulmates and our lovers for a long time.”
“Our trip home will be an interesting one, with so many of us in such close company,” you smirk up at your husband as you walk. “I imagine we will spend much time in our quarters.”
Oberyn chuckles. “I do not think Cersei imagined her gift to her daughter would ferry so many of her people away on it.”
“I suppose I can only be grateful that my family had a long-standing connection to Dorne and not to Casterly Rock.” You shudder slightly at the idea and cringe. “Imagine my mother’s victory if she had sold me to the Lannisters instead.”
“I would not wish such a fate on you.” He growls, protective of you despite the fact you are safe in his arms. “A husband with one hand who fucks his sister.”
“I would not wish such a fate on anyone.” It would have been her triumph, to manage something like that. You know how lucky and how grateful you are to have been promised to Oberyn. “I am grateful to be madly in love with my husband instead.”
“What is not to love?” He asks arrogantly with a small wink. He looks around the market again and then turns you back towards the books. “Should you not pick another dozen books for the trip to Dorne?”
“You have been so generous with growing my library that my trunks may weigh more than Margaery’s dowry. Still, you are not about to protest. Not for a moment. “I may spend the entire journey home with my nose in a book.”
“The captain I have hired for the trip home is strong. He will have crew to move them.” He’s unconcerned with that, more interested in your happiness than anything.
“My husband indulges me.” And the adoration on your face is very clear as he leads you back toward the bookseller. “He is soft and tender hearted and sweet.”
“If you think me soft, do not be frightened tomorrow.” He jokes. He knows that you mean he is soft when it comes to you and Ellaria and how he indulges you.
“Ellaria has told me about Mereen,” you admit, leaning close to his side as you come to stop in front of the bookseller’s stall. “How you fight. What to expect.”
“I have survived many battles.” He nods. “I expect to survive many more.” He let’s go of your hand and pats your ass affectionately. “Go find the books you wish to read to me while you are sitting on my cock later on.”
******
There is a thickness, a palpable tension in the air, when you and Oberyn return from the marketplace. The jeweler had already sent by his delivery of the things Oberyn purchased which were already made, and the note from him listed the price for the items being created, which Oberyn barely glanced at. The delivery of your books, the scarves you found for Ellaria and Margaery, and the baby blanket made by the dressmaker who had crafted your Dornish-style gowns — all of it is waiting for you when you finally return. But the truest shock is that your father has apparently been spending time with Raeden, Ellaria, and Margaery this afternoon.
He hugs you when you drift into the room on Oberyn’s arm and shakes Oberyn’s hands warmly. “I thought I would pay my respects tonight instead of distracting you with well wishes in the morning.” He tells your husband honestly.
While he had not thought much of your father when he first met the man, he had been sorely impressed with his insight since your mother’s departure. They had several frank and interesting conversations and Oberyn had refrained from engaging in his normal pleasures that he might with another lord, taking him to a whorehouse. “Many thanks.” He offers with a smile. “Join us, we are having a Dornish feast delivered by the best cook outside of her boarders.” He boasts. “In fact, I have offered him a place in the palace kitchens and he will sail with us when we depart.”
“We are bringing Salin home with us?” Ellaria sounds delighted with the idea and her fingers trace up your arm. “I think the princess had a hand in this. For the love of date cakes,” she teases.
“It was Oberyn,” you admit, laughing at how right Ellaria is about your craving. “But I am certainly not upset about it.”
“I would be delighted to stay.” Your father perks up at the mention of Dornish food. “It has been some time since I have had a good Dornish meal. The cooks would alter the recipes at home to their tastes.” He huffs, aware that his mother had written them done very specifically.
“Salin is extraordinarily talented.” Even Margaery is looking forward to the meal, having been fully converted to the cuisine of her new home with the first meal she tried. “He prepared the feast we are the night Raeden and I were wed and I have never tasted anything more magnificent.”
“Then I am eager to sample this cooking. My Marlee was a magnificent cook and I would often tease her that she would make a fortune selling her food.” Your father hums, knowing no one would fault him for speaking of his soulmate.
“I would like to hear more of her, if you are willing.” Speaking of Marlee seems to soothe your father and you must admit to being curious about the woman who could have been your mother.
“She was always smiling, always humming a little tune under her breath while she worked.” He tells you. “Making these delicious little tarts. I could eat a hundred of them.”
"How did you meet?" There is tea from the keep's kitchens while you await Salin's arrival with your dinner, and you offer a seat in front of the fire to your father.
“In Dorne.” He looks over at you fondly, smiling with the bittersweet smile of a man who is remembering a better time. “We had traveled back for my grandfather’s funeral. Mother was beside herself and my father could not leave. So I volunteered to escort her.” He had been brash and young, but already a good soldier. Handy with a sword. “I was bored by the grieving in the house, so I had snuck down to the kitchens.” He sighs. “She was baking. Flour on her cheek and singing a song as she mixed bread dough.”
“She worked for Grandmother’s family?” That is a surprise, and certainly makes you wish you had been bold enough to tell him about Raeden sooner. He would have been far more sympathetic than you knew.
“Yes.” He nods, his eyes sliding over to where Raeden is sitting with Margaery. “Although I think your path was leading you here.” He tells you, knowing what is whirling in that clever mind of yours. “She was beautiful. Raven black hair and yet…she had green eyes. The color of a watery jade.”
“So you fell in love over a secret meeting and a loaf of bread?” There is nothing sad or even melancholy in the life you have now, so you try to keep the conversation happy.
“The scar on my neck.” He pulls down the edge of his undershirt and his robe to expose the old, silvery scar. “It was new and fresh. Her dress showed it.” He shares a knowing grin with Oberyn. “She was mine from the first moment.”
“That sounds terribly romantic,” Margaery sighs, still softly envious of anyone who knows their soulmate or who has ever known them. “To have such definitive proof. To never wonder. It sounds remarkable.”
Her husband tightens his hold around her, offering her comfort. Everyone in this room knows that Margaery’s soulmate died without her ever knowing who it was. “If matching marks are ever discovered.” He murmurs softly. “They will be welcomed into our home.” It is the least he could offer considering the two sets of marks he bears, and the relationships he has with both women.
“If I ever have a set of marks appear?” Margaery nuzzles against him, glancing over at you before looking back to his eyes. “I hope that they will be yours or Star’s.”
“I would wear three sets of scars proudly.” He murmurs, bumping his nose against her cheek and then kissing her lips.
“As would I.” If the gods ever saw fit to give you three soulmates, you could not be happier to have one of them be Margaery.
“You are too generous.” Despite her inexperience, she has come to love to dynamic between the three of you especially, although she also enjoys time with Ellaria and Oberyn. Even if Oberyn had not yet fucked her.
“The gods have twice blessed you, pumpkin.” Your father chuckles. He still not quite understand the dynamic at play, but has decided that as long as you are happy, he does not need to. “To heap more upon you would be showing favoritism.”
“I would not expect anything less from gods concerning Star.” Ellaria chuckles quietly. She winks at you. “Perhaps the gods will send another wonderful person into Margaery’s life to add to our blessings.”
Glancing over at your husband, you bite back a grin and you wink at his as he so often does to you. "We will need a bed the size of you entire chamber if we continue to add members to our group."
You father clears his throat, reminding himself that he does not need to ask questions about things he does not wish to know. You are happy, and that is a rarity in life. “Dinner will be delightful, I’m sure.”
"It will." Leyth appears in the doorway, blessedly distracting from your embarrassment and ushering in Salin with his baskets upon baskets of delicious food.
“Salin, you outdo yourself every time.” Ellaria rises graceful and moves to greet the man with a charming smile and a hug. “Oberyn tells us you will be sailing back to Dorne with us?”
"The prince has most graciously offered to allow me to return home with your party." His hand is over his heart as he sets down the baskets from his other arm and Ellaria begins to unload them all over the large dining table. "I am most grateful to be able to see my family again."
“You must join us tonight.” Oberyn decides, motioning to the table. “We will be spending time together in much less spacious confines, let us drink and celebrate with delicious food tonight.”
"I could not impose--" Salin begins, but you immediately shake your head to stop him.
"Please," you insist, motioning for everyone to gather around the table. "We will not stand on ceremony tonight, but feast and celebrate as friends and family. We insist."
Looking around the table, Salin sees nothing but encouraging smiles and the murmurs of agreement, and he nods. "Your Graces are very kind. It would be my honour to join you."
There is something familiar about the young man. It tugs at your father’s thoughts but he tries to dismiss it as simply being nostalgic for his soulmate and everything to do with a culture he had much preferred to the rigid standards of the North.
Sitting down together at the table is indeed like an odd group of friends and family, but it is welcoming for that. Cal and Leyth join you instead of eating separately. Ellaria's mood is bright and boisterous. She speaks with Oberyn and Salin of home with such nostalgia that your father practically sighs with longing, and the rest of you who have never been to Dorne are hanging on every word.
Raeden leans back, watching the group with a smile as he strokes Margaery’s arm. Looking at the group that he has come to care for very much and squirms slightly in anticipation for things to come. It was not as if he had meant to wait to be with Oberyn. The moment had just never really come to be quite yet, but he want it so badly he cannot wait for the night to continue.
“I hope you will all forgive the indulgence,” Salin is saying as he begins to unpack the beautiful containers of sweet treats he prepared for dessert. “I have catered to her Grace’s cravings for our final course. Date cakes, figs with soft cheese, honey soaked fried dough, and crispy pastry with honey and nut filling. All of the princess’s favourites that I have been fortunate to discover so far.”
“Salin.” Your eyes grow as wide as saucers at the spread, practically giggling with glee. “You are far too kind and far too indulgent.”
The pastry with honey and nut filling makes your father tilt his head curiously as he finishes up his own meal. Easily enjoying the best Dornish meal he has had since he has been to the country. Watching as you pile a clean plate high with the delicacies with an indulgent chuckle.
“Try them, Papa.” You insist, moving the plate of crispy, sticky pastry toward your father. “I promise you will not be disappointed. Salin is a magician.”
Once offered, your father eagerly reaches for the pastry, likening it to one he has had many years ago and takes a bite quickly. "Mmmmmhhhhh." The moan is immediate and louder than he would have normally given over any good food. "I-- this tastes exactly like the tarts my soulmate would make."
“Are they traditional?” The question is for anyone at the table who would know - Salin, of course, but Oberyn or Ellaria, too.
“Not especially, your Grace.” Salon’s expression is apologetic. “They are a family recipe. My mother would make them for special dinners. Birthdays, usually.”
"This-- this is exactly like Marlee would make." Your father groans again after another bite. "She added a touch of anise. Not too much or it would overpower the nuts, she always said." He shoves the rest of the tart into his mouth and reaches for another.
Confused, Salin tilts his head and watches as your father seems entranced by the sweets. “You knew my mother?” He asks, not entirely sure how that could be.
The air is sucked out of the room and the tart in his hand falls to the table as your father's head whips around to gape at the man who had served the food. "Your mother?" He chokes out. "Your mother is Marlee Sand?"
“I—yes?” Confused even further as to why this fact has caused such a reaction in the older nobleman, Salin nods. “Marlee Brude, after marrying my sisters’ father. But she was born Marlee Sand.”
"She-- she's dead." The blood rushes to his ears and his head is swimming as he rolls his eyes over to you desperately. "She told me she was dead." He whispers, begging you to confirm that your mother told him that his soulmate was killed.
“I am sure it is a coincidence.” Although, which your father clutching your hand so tightly, your confidence wanes. “Sand is the most common name in Dorne. And surely Marlee is—”
“Is an unusual name.” Ellaria cuts in, glancing between the two of you and Salin. “Not unheard of, but not common.”
“And my mother is very much alive,” Salin adds, still not quite understanding what is happened. “I had a letter from her not a fortnight ago.”
"I don't understand.." He shakes his head, clinging to you and looking at Salin with a more critical eye before he gasps. "Boy." He barks, although Salin is a man grown and not a boy. "Do you have your mother's eyes or your fathers?" He demands.
Salin huffs, being well past thirty years of age and no longer a boy. “My father’s, according to my mother. Much good though that may do me.”
“Pumpkin.” He reaches for your jaw and cradles it gently as he looks from your eyes, his eyes, and then towards the man who shares those eyes. “How-- is it possible?” He whispers quietly.
"You cannot be my father, sir, no matter how much coincidence maybe at play tonight." It is all a little too much for Salin, and he pushes away from the table with a frown. "My father was some far-flung Northern lord who chose money over his soulmate. He married a shrew of a woman and never gave my mother a second thought."
That makes him frown, shaking his head and letting go of your chin to stand, swaying slightly at the revelation that this is his son sitting in front of him. “I can swear on my honor I have thought of your mother every day I have been apart from her.” He tells Salin. “I was led to believe that she had returned to Dorne when my betrothal was announced, as I was trying to convince my father to let me marry Marlee.”
"It cannot be." The color drains from Salin's face even as he stands to face your father. His father? There is something familiar reflected in the older man's face that makes him hesitate, but as he glances away to try to take a shaky breath, his eyes fall on your father's neck. Or - specifically - on the decades old scar that mars his skin. It is that scar that makes him gasp and his eyes dart up to the older man's again. "Tell me how you got that scar." He demands.
“A small skirmish on the northern boarder of our lands when I was young.” It was the first time he had killed a man, and he had barely escaped with his life. He had told Marlee about it one night after sex, her giggling as he had re-enacted it completely nude. He sees that Salin might believe him. “Have you see it before?”
"Do you know what truly happened to the Marlee Sand that you knew?" There is anger there, or at least frustration and surprise, and Salin bristles slightly when your father's story matches what his mother told him of the scar she wears from her soulmate. "Why she returned to Dorne?"
“My bitch of a wife had confessed just weeks ago that she had paid a solider to have her killed.” Your father’s anger rides across his face, a dark storm cloud of emotions that has him curling his fists. He had missed Marlee for years and then mourned her over the past weeks, now to find out she was still living? It is almost too much to bear.
"That soldier had a change of heart." Salin murmurs, feeling the impossibility of the situation slam through him with determination. "He told her to run, and she did." His shoulders hunch, disbelief clouding his features as he shakes his head. "I am Salin Sand because she was driven from your lands. It was many years before she even acknowledged a man's attention. My sisters are young, yet. Young like Lady Sunstone."
The chair in front of him is the only thing that keeps his kneels from buckling as your father learns his soulmate is really alive. Still bearing no marks from her on his body, he had never considered she was alive. “Son.” He chokes out, nearly sobbing at the fact that this man is his grown son. “Tell me she is well. That she is happy?”
Before Salin can even think, he finds himself embracing your father - his father - with tears pooling in his eyes. "I think she will be again," he admits, shaking a little as he processes everything that has happened today. He has gone from simply being able to return home to returning home with his father. "She has been a widow these last few years, but I know she has never forgotten you. In fact--" He pulls away just enough to look at the scar again, fully digesting its existence and the existence of the man who wears it. "She had sent me to learn of you. That...that is why I left Dorne."
“She-- you did?” He’s astonished because he had never seen you before tonight. “I-- did you ever come to the Vale?” He asks, immediately suspicious of his bitch of a wife. Even if she hadn’t rubbed the knowledge of his bastard son in his face, she might have sent him away and never let him know.
“I was robbed on my first night in King’s Landing.” Salin sighs. “I opened my stall in the marketplace as a way to earn the money to return home, but clearly I have been unsuccessful.” Living hand to mouth is difficult for anyone, but it had been particularly embarrassing to have to live in his stall the first few weeks. Things had improved, but not enough. Not until Prince Oberyn.
“I-- I didn’t know of you.” He tells him, hating that they had pulled apart to continue talking. Even as the rest of the table looks on with great curiosity, he only had eyes for his eldest child. “Or I would have- I would have brought her home.” He knows that marriage wouldn’t have been allowed but Marlee and Salin would have been safe, protected and loved.
“It seems I was meant always to have sisters.” The younger man laughs, finally looking over to where you are still sitting - dumbfounded - at the table before his eyes cut back to his father. “Mother will be glad to know you have not forgotten her.”
“I will-- would you allow me to see her?” His eyes are hopeful but there may be too much resentment there to let it be possible. The idea of seeing his soulmate again has him wishing he was already in Dorne.
“It will be up to her.” Even as a young boy who wished to defend her, Salin understood that his mother was strong enough to choose her life for herself. “I have already sent a raven home to tell her that I will be returning with the prince and princess. She will be waiting at the docks for my arrival. I only ask that you allow me to tell her you are there first. To not ambush her.”
It is nearly a miracle that he does not make himself lightheaded, he is nodding so quickly. “Of course.” He agrees before he looks around the table at the rest of the group. “Would you--” he clears his throat. “Would you like to come to my chambers?” He asks, knowing you are eager to celebrate with your husband and he wants to talk to Salin more. “I have wine, or stronger spirits. We can talk?” He is hopeful, biting his lip as he looks at the son that he has missed out on his entire life with. Wishing to know everything about him.
“You are not going anywhere until I am allowed to embrace my oldest brother.” The idea of all of it has overwhelmed you, but the smile on your face is soft and dreamlike. How utterly right that your father should be able to have again what had been stolen from him. That he will have the chance to know his eldest child.
Salin seems almost shocked that you would be wanting a hug, but he’s opening his arms immediately and moving towards the woman who he now knows is his sister. “Gladly. Without you and the prince, this would not be.”
“We will all have time to get to know each other much better on the voyage home.” The warmth of the embrace is genuine — two shocked individuals taking what is in front of them and fully accepting it head on. “And I hope you will find it a comfortable thing to call us by our given names now that we are family.”
“It-- it will take time, Princess.” Salin admits with a small smile as he pulls back. “Perhaps his feelings will change once we change his last name to mine.” Your fathers interjects. “If he is willing to be claimed.”
“We will have that conversation.” There are many mixed feelings that Salin has had about his father over his lifetime. Now, with an entire family being offered to him, the thing he wants first is simply to know this man. “But tonight, let us simply begin to know each other. More will come in time.”
“Come.” The older man nods and motions towards the door. “If we talk too late into the night, there is another bed you can sleep in if you have no wish to walk the roads of King’s Landing.”
It is almost surreal to watch your father and brother step away together. The tension that had filled the room seems to dissipate all at once, and you fall down again in your seat beside Raeden with a sigh. “That was…unexpected.”
“Completely astounding.” Oberyn muses thoughtfully, still reclined in his chair and shaking his head. “Fate is playing in your life, Star. The Gods have truly taken an interest.”

Jojolands 13: Ohana Means I'll Set Your Ass on Fire
Tumblr media
Dragona dropping some great truth about the absurd in this bizarre adventure. We finally got a peak behind that mask. I love it and I hate it, if you've read the chapter already you know what I mean. We'll get to that, because this right here isn't spoilery and it was such a cool nugget.
I love the way Dragona talks about the "absurd." Chance moments that alter one's life for better or for worse. The things that just don't make sense. Especially paired with Dragona opining about nearly losing their heart in the same chapter that last part about hearts being destroyed hits hard. I'm definitely sure we're looking at a trans narrative here and one we'll see play out. The chapter does a good job of implying what we need to know. Nudges at an early theory you've been changing your body with Smooth Operator. We ready? What follows is no place for beginners or sensitive hearts:
Tumblr media
Oh HELL yes! As if I needed a reason, these two were well on their way to top Jojo status and now the dynamic duo of the Joestar Siblings are definitely there. Mean girl sets her sights on a much more timid Dragona who we now know looked way more masculine at 14 than 18. Talking physical build and not just fashion. You know, I don't expect an 18yo to have all that figured out and with this I do think we'll see her keep coming into her own. But holy shit that was fucked up and I sincerely hope we can get through the rest of this with no more sexual assault on my Jojos blorbo.
If they do...Jodio will fuck you up. Set a whole damn bus on fire! And while I'm not looking forward to having to relive the impetus in the inevitable anime adaptation, since we've already had the cop I kinda like the perpetrator being a girl here. For one because it shows a side of this kind of bigotry that often goes underrepresented. You see a little more space made typically for trans men who had bad experiences with men prior to coming out, largely because it tends to overlap with those who found a comfortable half-step in something like a radical feminist group. But this sets up Dragona pretty well for a realistic other side of the coin to that. Your experiences with bullying might make you a little skittish of girls your age, you keep a foot in this criminal world even if we keep showing you (not unlike Okiku) as someone who doesn't fit super well, all this would certainly explain why you'd gravitate towards a figure like Meryl Mei. Why there's great potential for drama if she shows a nastier side. It's all great for a trans story that justifies still figuring yourself out through it...but sticks to a fairly realistic path for a lot of young women who find themselves running with gangs.
All that said, Jodio you absolute freak. Burning the whole bus is metal, it's scruffy, he's protecting family. Doooooope. These two are fantastic and I can't wait to explore their story, their dynamic more. Jodio & Dragona's sibling bond is the beating heart of this part. As much as I love Kiku/Izo & Killua/Alluka yeah this is gonna be a banger. Speaking of, this chapter was also the second time we nudged at Jodio getting shit for looking fey too. These two are ride or die for each other and their awesome mom Barbara Ann. How this all ties into their family falling apart and their desire to become filthy rich? No need to ask...
Tumblr media
In lighter news. They. When Meryl learns of the other lava rock that got smashed. We're all clear on who's the brains and who's the firepower in the dynamic duo right? I trust Meryl as far as I can throw her and she's a big lady. But for now everything seems on the up-and-up. Charmingman seems to have passed the sniff test and yeah it looks like he's just going to hang around. I like this new setup. Scouting a shadowy company to see if we can get more lava rock.
All in all one of the best chapters of Jojolands so far. I'm loving it, this is the exact direction I hoped it'd go. The backstory made this pretty heavy and I hope we can have more fun with this gang on the new excursion.

Rules: Post the names of all the files in your wip folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! Tag as many people as you have WIPS!
If you saw the original, no you didn't. Lol sorry, had to do some housekeeping here on my blog, and had to redo this post.
Right well, here's the thing, I have way more WIPs than I do moots 😅 butttttt I'll drop what I've got. Please please please ask me about any of them! I'm begging for interaction!
1) Little Meow Meow - my first fic, it's not abandoned, catboy!Ghost is also unkillable and emo.
2) Poké-Pandemonium - Pokémon and secrets. Here soon I aim to make people cry with it ❤ (soon as in within the next couple of chapters, whenever I put them out)
3) More Than Just Loose Ends - 09 Ghost has been watching over and mentoring 22 Ghost his whole life
4) Oh, Brother - my most popular fic, told through the eyes of Erin MacTavish (John's sister) and Tommy Riley. Baby's first realistic and in character AU.
5) I Don't Think We're in Space Anymore - Ghost is a shape-shifting alien and also chaotic as fuck. And horny. Whoops.
6) Was tHat thE BiTe oF 22 - FNAF but all the characters are replaced with COD characters. It's my little abomination.
7) Be Kind, Rewind - Ghost is suddenly 10 years younger. Young dumb and full of cum. Seriously, being 19 means he's got that teenager horndog thing goin on.
On to the ones that haven't been posted yet
8) Duo Fatui - Unus Annus, but make it Soap and Ghost
9) Is That Gonna be a Problem? - Ghost and Soap met before the events of MW2, and were secretly together during the game. This is the story of their relationship.
10) Cohabitation - ghost!Ghost and Zombie!Ghost share one body. They're the same person, so it's not difficult. They banter like siblings.
11) Lost a Bet - Ghost lost a bet with Gaz, so Gaz gets to design his next mask. Gaz designs a cat skull mask, and Ghost bonds with a bunch of stray cats on base.
12) Outlaw Outta Time - some of the COD boys get sent back in time and meet up with a certain outlaw. COD RDR2 crossover. It's a fix it for Arthur ❤
13) unnamed fic about trans Ghost dropping hints that he's trans and Soap who thought he was straight being really confused by the boners he gets around Ghost.
14) unnamed fic about Soap thinking Ghost has a girlfriend, that they're on their way to rescue, when it is in fact a dog. Ghost is fully aware of the miscommunication and thinks it's funny, so he doesn't clarify
15) unnamed fic about Ghost and Soap getting sucked into our world a la Supernatural's The French Mistake. They have to pretend to be Samuel and Neil until they figure out how to get home
WHOO BOY! I think that's all of them. And they're all Ghost/Soap except the FNAF one, because they're children.
Mooties who aren't already on this list, no pressure though! @myriadblvck @27potatochips @resident-idiot-simp @tacticaltaxonomist @ratpiss0

---
You stepped into your new room in Hawkins, Indiana, a town which seemed to have just about as much personality as the bottom of a shoe. Glancing around the empty, but spacious room, you thought about how many rooms just like this you had lived in before. With your dad working some secret government job, you moved around the country a lot and hardly ever had time to really settle into a space or get to know the people around you.
It felt like just when you started to get used to a routine somewhere new - finally started decorating your room and hanging out with people outside of school - your dad would be relocated and you'd have to go with him. Your mom wasn't in the picture anymore, she had been gone since you were 13, and the only explanation your dad every gave you was that "she didn't want to live this type of life anymore, and we weren't enough to keep her around," the last bit always stung when you thought about it.
Dad was quiet after mom left, and he didn't really seem to care what you did with your time as long as your grades came back fine and you weren't gone for an unreasonable amount of time. Plus, working most nights meant he hardly had the schedule to keep tabs on where you were.
Nevertheless, a fresh start in Hawkins felt necessary. The last place you had been was LA, which was waaaay too big and waaay to noisy for your taste. That was another thing that set you apart from people your age: you weren't really into parties and shopping and sports like most high school seniors were. How could you be? You were never anywhere long enough to play anything or get invited anywhere. You kept yourself busy with books, movies, music, and most of all Dungeons and Dragons.
The game which was being shunned as a satanic cult was your escape from reality and the only constant thing in your life. Yes, it was hard to find a group to play an entire campaign with, but you managed, plus your favorite part was creating characters and imagining fantastic new worlds you'd love to explore. In fact, a good amount of the boxes you brought with you, which contained everything you owned, were full of binders, manuals, books, and figurines you had collected in your years of playing.
You started unpacking, throwing your childhood stuffed animals on your queen sized bed in the corner of your room, and stacking your plentiful collection of books and movies on the floor and on your desk. You were about to pull out your favorite books - The Lord of the Rings trilogy - when your dad knocked on your door
"Hey y/n, sorry to interrupt...uh I just got called into work so I'm gonna head out, but I'll leave some money on the counter for you"
"Oh okay, thanks. Do you know when you'll be ba-"
Before you could finish, he was out the door. You shook your head and returned to your packing, hearing your dad's car drive away outside.
-----
By the time you finished packing it was already dark outside and you could hear faint talking outside your window. You walked over, pulling your curtains aside, and looked to your neighbors house to see two young boys, probably around 14-15, standing in between your house and the next. One of them was wearing a hat that said "thinking cap" on it, which you thought was funny, and the other was taller and had wavy black hair. They seemed to be arguing about something
"No Dustin, Lucas said he has his championship game tomorrow and there's no way he's gonna make it to Hellfire"
"Eddie is gonna KILL us man!"
They we're talking pretty loud, and you were pretty tired and didn't want to hear their bickering while you tried to fall asleep, so you opened your window
"Hey, idiots!"
The boys shut up instantly and looked over to you
"Listen, I really don't mean to interrupt, but I don't know who you are or who this Eddie guy is, but your bickering over him is really getting in the way of my sleep and I have had a very, very, long day of unpacking"
They looked at you, wide-eyed, before the shorter boy in the hat moved closer to your window
"Oh um, sorry, our bad. And I'm Dustin by the way, I live just there," he gestured to the house next to yours, "and this is my friend Mike"
"Pleasure, I'm y/n," you didn't want to be mean to them, so you figured you'd go ahead and introduce yourself, "well I'm gonna go get that sleep I mentioned, and please just keep your voices down."
"Aye aye, captain," Dustin said with a salute before he and Mike walked away from your window towards his house.
You closed your window, took off your sweaty clothes, turned off your light, and crawled into your new bed, nervous for your first day at school tomorrow.

Ninjago seasons and specials ranked by how good the music is (with commentary)
Just a comment before we start: This does not include Weekend Whips or any other intros. Just the score that plays under episodes and credits music
21. Skybound
There's just barely any music for this season due to budget cuts or something of the like, and what music that is there I'm just not super enthused about or I forgot about
20. Crystalized
While there's a good amount of music for this season, I didn't find it super special or appealing, and it was just kind of meh like the season itself
19. Legacy of the Green Ninja
I hate to put this here, but something's gotta go here so it might as well be S2. The music was pretty great and there's a LOT of it, plus it's available to the public on an album, but really the only tracks from this season that stick out to me are Day Jobs and The Final Battle
18. Rebooted
Again, don't dislike the music, but something's gotta take these spots and I can't even recall any pieces from this season except for X-1 Joyride and Built to Protect
17. The Island
The score for this season is miles better than the plot and execution, but there's not a lot of it. There was like, one piece I could find on youtube. It was great though! Really fit the island vibe
16. Fire Chapter
It was pretty hard to decide whether The Island or Fire Chapter went here, but eventually I decided on Fire Chapter just because it had more tracks, plus the ongoing and reused Serpentine theme. None of the tracks really stood out to me, but I loved that they reused the Serpentine theme from the first few seasons for Aspheera and her minions
15. Seabound
This one is here for a combination of reasons from The Island and Fire Chapter. It has a lot of music, plus it fits the ocean theme super well. None of the tracks stood out to me except for the one reused one from Wu's Teas when they're all walking out in their diving gear though, so that's why it's this low
14. Hunted
I absolutely love the plot of this season and the hunter's theme, but the only thing that really stood out to me as 'Wow, this is amazing was Dragon Hunt'. It's also super all over because of the whole realms thing, which obviously doesn't make for a very consistent soundtrack. The Resistance Never Quits is a great track, too
13. March of the Oni
Now we start moving into the great seasons. 13th place might seem low, but considering how flipping amazing the other soundtracks are I think this is well-placed. It's diverse, but all fits together and the two moods are nicely separated, unlike whatever was happening in Hunted. I really like the nice, flowy, and clean tracks when we're around the ninja, and the choppy, dissonant music with the whispers and uncommon time signatures for the Oni never fails to give me good chills
12. Hands of Time
I'm gonna be honest with you and say that I was going to put this one a LOT lower, but then I decided to give it a relisten, and DANG. I can't believe I forgot how much of a BANGER this soundtrack is! Especially the ongoing theme. I think I forgot just because the plot of the season is so forgettable, but the music definitely goes hard
11. Rise of the Snakes
I think this is probably the most expected ranking on this list. The soundtrack is great, but it's not amazing. It's really hit-and-miss, honestly. You have bangers like Falcon Chase, Taking the Bait, Weapons Take Flight, and Race to Ouroboros, but the rest of it is kind of bland and forgettable in my opinion
10. The Lego Ninjago Movie
It seems like no one talks about the score for TLNM when we should absolutely be talking about it! It's great! You should really go listen to it. The percussive flute tracks by Greg Pattillo are especially good. Pieces like Sibling Rivalry, The Rise of Kitty Kitty, and Wise Master Wu are also super great!
9. Sons of Garmadon
I honestly can't remember why I put this so high, but I trust more-awake-Fiddler's judgment. It's got a great score, it's just that not a lot of it is super memorable for me. The very beginning of the season (the first bit of Sons of Garmadon Heist) gets stuck in my head all the time though
8. Pilots
Even though there are only 3-4 tracks in both episodes (depending on whether or not you count the Overture), all of them are amazing. Attack of the Skeleton Army, Discovering Spinjitzu / Dragon Ride, and especially Training Course all go hard, and I love that the very first taste of Ninjago we ever got had such great music. Like, be honest. Do you think that Ninjago would've taken off if it had some crap MIDI, mass-produced music in the background? I personally don't think so. We owe a lot to Vincent & Kramer for the Ninjago we know today
7. Day of the Departed
Considering that this special has like, only one track, this is pretty fuckin' high for just one piece of music among whole seasons worth of music. I cry pretty much every time I hear Maybe I'm Departed, and it hits so much harder after Kirby Morrow's passing. Also, little self-promo here, if you haven't listened to my version of Maybe I'm Departed yet, what are you doing?
6. Prime Empire
Prime Empire's music is just fucking sick. It goes so hard and perfectly fits with the cyberpunk/video game vibes of the season. It's so diverse, too, with tracks from Scott's Stowaway Part 2, to Stayin' Aflight, to Fourth Mile Marker, to the Noir Whip. I'd say one of my favorite parts in the entire thing is when a West Side Story reference appears in the soundtrack of Confidential when two or three of the goons are snapping like the Jets lol. My favorite track in Prime Empire would have to be Fourth Mile Marker, just because it's so beautiful, and the melody also reminds me a lot of the theme from Schindler's List, which is just a beautiful theme
5. Dragons Rising
DR is all the way up here despite being so new because the music is already so iconic in my eyes. I haven't even really paid attention to the 'remixes' of old pieces yet, I'm just in love with the original music. It's so unique, and you really can't mistake it for any other season. I especially love the credits from The Merge Part 1, and Tradition of the Ninja
4. Master of the Mountain
I originally had this at #3, but I made a last-minute decision to bump it down one. Not because of anything about it though. It's fuckin' epic. I love the ongoing theme, and in the suite, I absolutely love at the very beginning the few notes played by handbells. Also in the suite, from about 5:49 to the end is the most epic, magical, grandiose thing I've ever heard in my life and you need to go listen to it right this second. Exit tumblr, listen to it, then come back for the top 3. I'll be here when you get back. And one more thing I love about the score is that it's constantly in different and weird times, and cuts out beats when you're least expecting it. Also, I know I said I wouldn't bring Whips into this, but I absolutely love that the beginning is in 6/8. First whip not in 4/4 let's gooooooooo
3. Ice Chapter
Honestly, I was super torn about whether I should put this one at #4 or #3, but in the end, I chose this spot for a number of reasons. The whole thing just gives off winter vibes, I absolutely love the folk aspect of it for the Formlings theme, the Ice Emperor theme is so freaking dark and scary, and there are so many bangers! Namely Akita Finds Her Animal Form and Twice As Stubborn
2. Possession
If you know me, this might come as a surprise seeing as how much I love this season and its music, but it's actually second place for me. It is home to my favorite piece from Ninjago ever, though, which is Ghost Story. I've probably made dozens of posts about the geniusness of Morro's theme and music when he's around and talked about, so I won't go into great detail about that. Just know that the well-known bit features the tritone (often called the devil's interval) played on a fiddle and/or viola (the fiddle was considered the devil's instrument back in ye olden days). Anyway, I highly recommend that you go listen to Ghost Story because it's just a wonderful piece that beautifully tells Morro's story through music
1. Tournament of Elements
I always go back and forth on whether ToE or Possession is my favorite season, but there was no doubt in my mind that ToE is my favorite from a musical standpoint. It's so diverse, yet fits together so nicely. The music features a lot of traditional drums and chanting, really fitting the whole island/fight club/cult theme. The season also has a bunch of bangers, spanning from Gauntlet of Humility, to Thinking About Yourself, Rooftop Ruffhouse, And That's The Kink, I Am the Titanium Ninja, Lloyd's Flashbacks, and who could forget Sneaking Around, the credits music for a bunch of episodes in a lot of other seasons
So, do you agree with my ranking? Feel free to reblog with thoughts or your own rankings!

Glenwood
Are you ready Castle? I certainly am. Good luck with this one you will need it. Here is the promised/announced essay of questions from me (I will send it in chapters):
[1] Seers/Oracles:
1. In the first Beth audio (you didn’t think we would start that far back did you) Beth mentioned and I quote “figured from the few interviews I’ve seen that they’re some of the most pretentious”. I have a few questions to that statement. What kind of interviews? Are Seers like famous or some other shit? Or maybe interviews with criminals? I could see Seers having a serial killer history tbf.
2. Sticking to the beginning of the Glenwood series, what are different stereotypes about magic wielders? I’m especially interested in Vampires and Seers but I’m happy to hear more of you are willing to write all of this.
3. How rare is the Seer magic type? Same question for Oracles. (How many Seers are there?)
4. We know that Seers see into the future. Oracles can see into the future as well as the past. Is there a magic wielder who can only see into the past?
5. Still going with the Seer questions. I imagine going out in public must be extremely stressful. Seers can probably suppress the visions for a certain amount of time but wouldn’t it hurt? Or maybe even have some consequences later on in the day?
6. What are the usual consequences of holding a vision for too long? Nausea? Fever? Nosebleed?
7. Question above but the most extreme ravages of seeing visions.
8. How long can a Seer hold their vision before it becomes too much?
9. Maybe not a question but more of a statement. Beautiful got thrown against the wall by a werewolf. Did that not hurt? Do Seers have some enhanced durability or some shit? In other words, do Seers have some other special qualities that just haven’t been mentioned yet? (Example: enhanced strength, hearing, etc.)
10. How far back can a vision go? I’m gonna try to word it as logically as I can. When Seers have visions on past events, does the distance from their timeline affect the Seer? Would it take more energy?
11. Get Beautiful some therapy please. Seeing death is not a healthy everyday routine.
12. What can you tell us about Beautiful’s childhood?
13. For a Seer to be born does one of the parents need to be one?
14. Okay this one has been bothering me for a while. How do you learn Seer magic? Is there a book about it? How do you just start having visions? Can you even learn it?
If any of the questions have been answered before or you prefer not to answer any of these you are free to skip there is no pressure. I’m just completing Beautiful’s backstory.
I think that’s all for the Seers questions. I’ve been waiting for you to come back on tumblr and then send it all :) Drink some water and have a great day <3
So I see we're just having me write down every little detail of my lore- I appreciate your dedication XD Okidoki, let's so this!
1- Seers are often featured in interviews after majors events like natural disasters if a vision they had was submitted to SIGHT and helped prepare for said event. Or featured on podcasts as guests because people always want to know about the kind who can see into the future.
2- There are plenty of stereotypes that Seers have a power complex because technically they have to ability to see any potential future and get a lot of clout for themselves. They're seen as know-it-alls and braggers, even if most just keep to themselves. Obviously, Fire Elementals are seen as short tempered, Earth Elementals are seen as less intelligent because how smart can a person who moves dirt be?Water Elementals have a hard time being seen as someone who's reliable and shifters often are assumed to be aggressive. When it comes to Vampires, most people assume that all vampires are rich oligarchs who pray on the weak. There's the stereotype that if you get close to a vampire, they can't help but bite you.
3- Honestly, someone tried running the same kind of numbers for blood mages and I got confused by the numbers myself XD Because this story is s fluid as we progress through it, I'm not going to include any rock solid statistics for my own sanity. Generally, Seers make up less than 5% of the magical population, and Oracles make up less than an eighth of that demographic.
4- Nope, ever Seer can see into the future.
5- Seers can suppress their visions when they're in public, it takes a bit of effort but it doesn't hurt them at first.
6- Consequences include headache, nausea, dizziness, lack of focus, and extreme fatigue.
7- The worst consequences in the most extreme circumstances would be fainting, seizures, and even hallucinations where the vision starts to spill through into their reality.
8- They can hold back visions for a few hours, even up to a few days before they start to feel the consequences.
9- Seer's don't have any advanced strength, Beth's just good at pulling her punches, even on potential intruders.
10- Visions of the past can go back years, it all depends on how hard the Oracle pushes to look back.
11- They all need a good therapy session, especially Beautiful
12- Since Beautiful is a listener character, that's up for interpretation!
13- You can't learn to be a Seer. There are books on how to manage visions and tell a vision from dreams or fantasies, all of which are provided by SIGHT.
Hope that answered your Seer questions, somewhat! Looking forward to what you've got next :)

Weekend WIP Game
Rules: List your WIPs below (if you only write one fic at a time, feel free to include future WIPs/ideas!) then answer the following questions. Then, tag as many people as you have WIPs (or more).
Thanks to @kiwiana-writes @daisymae-12 @myheartalivewrites @hgejfmw-hgejhsf for the tag!
1. WIP List: (Bolded have words, the others are just on the list)
Super Six and the Siren's Call (PJO AU)
Claremont 2008
Baby's First Pride
Daddy Issues (father storylines swapped, snippet linked)
AU of Someone's Fic (this is vague on purpose lol)
Grey's Prequel
RWRB Trans Alex Gender Rewrite
Amtrak Meet-Cute
Alex Gymnast AU
Threesgiving
F1 AU
Alex (and somewhat Henry) Experiences Quintessential Queer Things For the First Time
Honestly I feel like I'm missing some but this is a lot lol.
2. Which of your WIPs is currently the longest? Super Six and the Siren's Call, we have over 48,000 words written
3. Which WIP do you expect will end up the longest? Also Super Six and the Siren's Call, it's gonna be a Book
4. Which WIP is your favourite to write/the most enjoyable to write? Why? Super Six and the Siren's Call is great because co-writing really keeps me motivated and focused even when I'm starting to lose energy! I also really enjoyed writing the Alex Chapter of Daddy Issues (I only have two chapters written lol)
5. Which WIP do you find the most intimidating to write? Why? The AU of Someone Else's Fic-I had an idea I just needed to get down but I haven't talked to that author about it yet so sometimes I add to it when inspired but it's hard to make forward progress when I don't know if it'll ever go anywhere or just live in google docs forever
6. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why? Same answer as above, I just feel weird even though it would be doing something different from their fic I just get nervous about stepping on toes.
7. Which of your WIPs will you seek out a beta/sensitivity reader for? Why? I mean I want a beta for all of them ideally, but for Daddy Issues it's 1) hefty and deals with MCD, and 2) I haven't written a lot/really any smut but I believe it will have some lol
8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of writer's block? Baby's First Pride I'm sorry to all the fans, I promise I will get back to it. I just haven't felt inspired and don't want to half-ass it.
9. Which WIP has your favourite OC? Tell us about them? Daddy Issues I got to create the whole Díaz side of the family which is super fun. I'm white, but I have extended family from South America who I've spent time with and I'm drawing on those experiences a lot.
10. Which WIP is the sexiest? Threesgiving even though @affectionatelyrs and I only have vague ideas
11. Which WIP is the angstiest? Daddy Issues, we're dealing with MCD, divorce, mental health issues. Also Chapter 5 of Claremont 2008 is gonna have canon MCD but it'll still be angsty, though I think less angsty than canon?
12. Which WIP has the best characterisation (in your humble opinion)? I don't think any of them is much better than the others, but I do love our characterization in Super Six and the Siren's Call. I also had a lot of fun playing with younger Alex and Henry in Daddy Issues and Claremont 2008.
13. Which WIP has the best scene setting (in your humble opinion)? Again probably Super Six and the Siren's Call because this is not my strength but @inexplicablymine is great at this.
14. Which WIP have you worked the hardest on? I mean, one is 48,000 words and the next one is 17,000. So.
15. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for? Why? Not to beat a dead horse but....we have plans for Super Six and the Siren's Call. However individually either Grey's or Daddy Issues. People seem to love the snippets for the second one which is making me really excited.
16. Do you dream about any of your WIPs? Once in a while? Ironically I dreamed about @inexplicablymine's WIP the other night which is hilarious to me.
17. Do any of your WIPs have particular complexities that your other fics don't? As of this exact moment Claremont 2008 has a lot of epistolary pieces that I really love that are not in other WIPs, and I have been using skins and html coding on texts which has been a game changed imo. Also one of my WIPs has a lot of POVs, some I've never written before.
18. Which WIP is the funniest or has the most humour? The Super Six and the Siren's Call not to toot my own horn but I feel like I've really been able to nail Rick's brand of sarcasm, @read-and-write- and @inexplicablymine too.
19. Do any of your WIPs contain outside POVs or a deep dive on a character other than the main ship? How are you finding that process? Yes, and I wrote Nora's POV recently and it really just flowed out of me, I was super surprised by how easily writing her came to me.
20. Tell us one thing we don't know about one or more of your WIPs. For the AU of Someone Else's Fic Henry and Alex meet right after Alex's bisexual awakening, and then Alex blows Henry off because he's just found out he's gonna be a father.
Here's a tag per WIP, sorry if I missed someone's that already did this (no pressure also)! @heybuddy-drabbles @affectionatelyrs @littlemisskittentoes @inexplicablymine @read-and-write- @14carrotghoul @sherryvalli @hypnostheory @mainstreamelectricalparade @suseagull04 @user-anakin @tintagel-or-cockleshells @gay-flyboys

Chapter 13!
Steve Harrington: Vampire Hunter
ao3 link
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4
Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8
Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12
(Chapter 14-17 coming soon, we're nearly there friends!)
The mismatched group of wereanimals, vampires, and Steve entered the fight from backstage. It was a further route to get there than if they had gone directly through the theater, but fighting against the flow of the crowd all running in the opposite direction would have taken much longer.
They spilled out of the backstage doors in pairs with Steve and Eddie bringing up the rear and only Dustin stumbling in alone behind them. Steve had argued with the kid the whole way down to stay behind and out of harm's way, it wasn’t like he could really help- not being trained in any sort of fighting that Steve was aware of, but he’d adamantly refused. He reminded Steve that out of the two of them he was the more likely to be hurt.
“How do you figure that?” Steve asked. “It’s a giant snake! It could eat you just as easily as me and I'm pretty sure being eaten would kill even you.”
Dustin scoffed. “This isn’t just some run of the mill snake, Steve! That thing is an Egyptian Cobra.”
Come to think of it, Steve had noticed the telltale hood that fanned out from either side of the monstrosity’s head, he just hadn’t cared about the distinction. It was a massive man-eating snake and it needed to be put down, who cared what species it was.
“So?”
“So?! It’s one of the most venomous snakes on the planet! Even a bite from a normal sized Egyptian Cobra can be fatal, could you imagine how much toxin would get pumped into your body if that monster got even one of its fangs in you?”
Wonderful.
Not that it mattered much, Steve was pretty sure that venous or not, if that thing sunk teeth into him he’d be a goner. But he understood what Dustin was getting at. Vampires were immune to things like venom and poison, the same way they couldn't get sick. Still he couldn’t just let Dustin put himself in the line of fire, he was too young, too important to so many people. If something were to happen, how could Steve ever look Mrs. Henderson in the eye and tell her that her son, who should have outlived her even if he wasn’t a vampire, had died.
Steve was bringing his gun to this party anyway and had no intentions of getting any closer to the snake than was necessary, so he offered Dustin a compromise. “If I promise to stay as far away from it as I can, will you promise to do the same and stay behind me?”
Dustin sighed. “Fine, but one of these days you have to stop treating me like a kid.”
“I know buddy, but it’s not gonna be today.”
-
The snake looked somehow even bigger up close. Most of its body was coiled beneath it in a massive pile on the stage. Its head was nearly two feet wide and hovered about ten feet above the floor. The scales that covered its body were so dark brown it looked almost black, with matching soulless eyes and a thick forked tongue
Steve was surprised to find the members of the band still on stage, even more shocked to find them slowly circling the cobra, trying to distract and surround the thing. He had expected the men to be long gone, or perhaps already eaten, if he was honest. Now that he was down here with them however, he thought he understood why.
There was a sudden explosion of power, magic suddenly so thick in the air that Steve thought he might choke on it. It was nothing you could see, only feel, and it had a distinct and familiar feel to it, though he’d only stood this close to something like it once before, when the wererats had transformed right in front of him down in the sewer. He’d shielded his eyes then out of respect, but now he couldn’t look away.
He watched as one-by-one the musicians dropped to all fours on the floor, writhing as fur began flowing over their skin in a rippling wave. Their faces morphed, mouths elongating into the shape of a snout with long teeth and a vicious snarl. Their legs seemed to bend at an odd angle, something that looked like it should have hurt but none of the men uttered so much as a whimper. It seemed to take both forever and no time at all for the four very human looking figures to be replaced by four very overgrown and ferocious wolves.
Werewolves.
He should have known that the band wasn’t human.
One of the wolves jumped, pouncing on the snake. He hit at about midway down the neck and bit at the thing, his powerful jaws worked as hard as they could but the wolf couldn’t seem to penetrate the cobras thick skin.
The snake threw him off easily and he fell to the stage with a sickening crack. Had he been human, or hell even a standard wolf, Steve would have been sure the man had just shattered his spine, but wereanimals healed fast and were typically harder to hurt. Argyle ran forward, pulling the limp body of the werewolf out of the way just in time to not be hit by a crushing blow from the end of the snake’s tail.
Steve raised his gun, aimed, and fired twice all in a split second while he had a clear shot at the monster’s head. The first round hit the snake just below its left eye, the second only clipped the edge of its hood. It reared back, hissing and flashing its fangs but otherwise seemed unaffected by the blow. It hadn’t even bled that Steve could see.
Fuck.
He lowered the weapon, pointing it at the floor as two of the other other wolves jumped the snake on either side at the same time. Steve caught a flash of red out of the corner of his eye and a second later saw Max join the fight, stradling the cobra’s back. She wrapped her small arms around its neck as best she could and squeezed, trying and failing to crush its throat.
She and the two wolves were flung off seconds later, landing in a heap next to the bulk of the snake's coiled body. Max rolled quickly, getting out of the way just in time to avoid the swing of its tail.
Unfortunately, Dustin, who had broken his promise and followed her into the fray was standing a little too close.
The tip of the snake's tail swept the kids feet out from under him, and before Dustin could get his legs back under him it had wrapped its tail around his waist, lifting him up and towards its wide open mouth.
Steve’s heart sank and all the blood drained from his face at once. He couldn’t get another shot off now, not with Dustin in the line of fire. His silver bullets, which had done jack squat so far against the snake, would shred the young vampire's heart to ribbons.
Terror burrowed its way into Steve’s gut but it was more somehow, there was an extra edge to it as if he were feeling someone else’s fear running alongside his own. He looked around wildly trying to find Eddie, having lost track of him somehow in the chaos of the fight and found him already springing into action, climbing the curtains directly behind the snake’s head. He was going to try and surprise it by coming in from above and behind.
Eddie looked right back at him as though he could feel Steve's gaze and suddenly it hit him what was happening.
He was sensing Eddie’s feelings as if they were his own. Steve didn’t have time to be angry at the intrusion or to worry about the how or why, not while Dustin was in danger. He assumed Eddie was in tune with him as well and he tried to use that link to urge Eddie on with his plan. He thought the words mouth and weakness, over and over again as he visualized the snake's open jaw and focused on Eddie and the space in his head where he imagined the vampire lurking.
As far as Steve could tell they’d all had very little luck in penetrating the snake’s scales, it was like armor, but if Eddie were to destroy its mouth it would at least buy them some time and perhaps the flesh inside its big maw was thinner than the tough exterior.
Eddie swung and launched himself from the curtain, landing right on top of the snake’s head, and Steve prayed he had gotten the message.
Dustin was struggling in the snake's grasp, screeching as it flung him from side to side. Steve felt helpless and had to remind himself over and over that as long as the kid’s head and heart remained intact he could and would survive this.
Steve holstered his handgun, it wasn’t doing him any good anyway, and instead drew his little knife, as Eddie had called it, and attempted to wade into the fight. He felt Eddie's panic rise suddenly, and with a new desperate edge to it. Steve froze in his tracks, looking up. He expected to find the vampire wounded or in trouble, instead he found Eddie watching him with wide frightened eyes. He could feel in his bones how terrified the vampire was for his safety and how he didn’t want him getting any closer.
Something happened as they stared into each other's eyes, an almost audible snap as though something between them had broken, or maybe… had clicked into place. There was a flash where, for a second, Steve was no longer looking at Eddie but was instead looking at himself through the other man’s eyes. He blinked and landed back in his own body. Blinked again and saw the entire scene around him from a different vantage point. It was incredibly disorienting and Steve found himself falling to the floor. He squeezed his eyes shut, attempting to regain his balance and tried to ground himself by focusing on the way the hard wood of the floor felt beneath him. Still he found that when he opened his eyes again he could still see the world through Eddie’s as if they were his own, as if they were connected.
Not only could he see, but feel, hear, taste, and smell too.
The stale and musty odor of the snake filled Steve's nostrils. As Eddie pried the cobra's mouth open and dug into the monster's flesh with his bare hands, Steve felt the wet sticky blood as if it was pouring over his own fists. When Eddie set fangs into the things impossibly wide neck, having found a weak spot where the hood extended from the thing’s length, Steve tasted its vile blood as it filled their mouth, pouring out of the corners and running down the front of them in a trickling line. This wasn’t the sort of blood that would sustain us, so we didn’t drink it. Steve understood even as he was horrified.
Someone was screaming and Steve really wished they would stop. His senses were already being completely overwhelmed by whatever the fuck was happening to him and that sound was only making it worse.
His eyes had fallen closed again at some point but as he struggled against the torrent of sensations he felt someone grab him hard, hands on either side of his face, forcing him to look up. His eyes shot open and he found himself staring into the cool blue of Max's. She was shouting, trying to talk to him but he couldn’t make it out, couldn’t hear it over the sound of…himself.
It was him that was screaming, he thought distantly, the shock of the girl’s touch had brought him back to himself enough to realize. He stopped, clamping his mouth shut to keep the sound inside as he breathed heavily through his nose.
Finally Max’s words started to sink. “You have to put your mental shields up! He’s not strong enough to maintain this stupid divide between the two of you AND take on that fucking snake!”
“What?” Steve croaked out.
“Shields, man! Your shields!”
Steve thought about the way he’d kept Eddie out of his dreams when he finally learned the truth about what they were. He had no idea what he was doing at the time, still didn’t really, but he’d visualized a sort-of wall inside his mind and that had, to his surprise, worked.
He did the same now, building the walls in his mind's eye thicker and higher than ever before, until he could no longer feel everything the vampire was feelling, until he felt alone in his body once more.
His heart rate began to slow to something a little more manageable and he felt some of the tension drain from his limbs.
“Pretty good, for an amateur,” Max admitted. “But, if you two are gonna keep this up you're gonna want to find yourself a witch to teach you a thing or two.”
“I don't understand. What happened? What was that?”
“You’re his human servant.” She said, as if that answered anything.
He stared at her blankly.
“Fucking humans,” Max sighed heavily. “You know so little. It’s amazing that you’ve gotten this far. The bond that you and Eddie have, incomplete as it is, allows you to share all. Power, strength… uh… souls, for lack of a better word. Once you’ve completed all four marks you’ll be able to live as one in two bodies if you choose to do so. Both with perfectly free will but able to share anything and everything without a thought. Deeper and more intimate than marriage, you will know each other on a level than you can’t even comprehend until it happens.”
The idea was almost as thrilling as it was frightening. The last thing Steve wanted was to be tied to a vampire for eternity. That he was sure of, but he couldn’t deny that some parts of the offer were alluring. Not the immortality, that was never something he longed for, but to always know what your partner was thinking, feeling, to never again have to doubt the truth in their words when they said, I love you?
To be so close to another person, know them intimately, inside and out, and have no secrets between you?
That was something he craved.
The closest thing he had to a relationship like that was with Robin. She was his best friend and he loved her completely, but there was a hole in his life that even she couldn’t fill.
Steve shook himself hard. It didn’t matter how much he might want that. It didn’t matter how much he might want Eddie. It wasn’t right, it wasn’t even real!
 Right?
“I don’t have time for this,” Steve said, rising to his feet and turning his attention back to the fight, which had apparently ended without his help. The floor was littered with blood and a few slightly battered allies.
Dustin was okay. He was standing near Eddie, who was bent over what remained of the snake’s massive head, which had somehow, finally been removed from its body.
The only casualty on their side was one of the wolves, apparently the band’s drummer, who’d been crushed under the snake’s weight at some point while Steve was going out of his mind.
Dustin noticed Steve finally up and moving around and rushed over. He had a bit of a limp and he was cradling one of his arms but looked pretty good otherwise, considering.
“Steve! I heard you screaming, are you okay?”
“Am I…?” Steve trailed off, shaking his head. “Dustin, you were almost eaten by a giant cobra! I should be asking you if you’re alright!”
The kid shrugged “I mean, yea it hurt and i’m pretty sore but I can feel my insides healing as we speak! How cool is that?!”
Steve pinched the bridge of his nose. “Jesus Christ,” he murmured. This kid was going to give him premature gray hairs.
Dustin grinned. “You’re just jealous of my superior healing abilities. Man, I fucking love being a vampire!”
“Language!” Steve admonished automatically. As if Dustin was still a little kid, as if any of it mattered when he was a fucking vampire now, and he almost died, and...
Steve threw his arms around Dustin’s shoulders and pulled him in, cradling him to his chest, thankful for the first time that his little buddy was no longer human.
When he finally let Dustin go, Steve looked at Eddie over the top of the kid’s head. Though they were no longer sharing thoughts, Steve could see the range of conflicting emotions there in his eyes clear as day. Gratitude that they’d survived. Fear of how much worse this could have gone. Triumph at having slain an enemy, and finally, lust.
The same heavy-lidded desire Eddie had displayed earlier as he’d watched Steve drop to his knees for him was reflected in his eyes again now.
Eddie had ripped the creature apart with bare hands and teeth, and he’d enjoyed it.
A lot.
It was enough.
Enough to remind Steve of all the reasons why he couldn’t trust the vampire. Enough to remind him that the marks were not some gift, and that the bond they shared was forged in trickery and lies. Hooking up tonight had been a mistake, a moment of weakness.
He forced himself to look away.
Eddie was a monster, it was as simple and as complicated as that. They may have been on the same side of this particular fight, he might not be capital-e Evil, but there was nothing else to call him. He was dangerous, and wicked, and deadly, and Steve was human.
He didn’t fall in love with vampires. He waited and watched until their true nature showed and when they inevitably stepped far enough out of line and broke the law, he hunted them down and killed them.
The theater had long since emptied out, and with the fight now over the only sound to be heard in the cavernous space was the panting breaths of the few cohorts present that still needed to draw breath.
Steve wasn’t surprised when, in unison, several sets of the lower theater doors burst open sending police with weapons drawn spilling down the aisles headed directly for them. The air was filled with shouts of “drop your weapons!” and “hands up!” and “freeze!”
There had been too many innocent civilians present to think that no one had called 911.
Instinctually Steve stepped to the edge of the stage, putting himself to the forefront of their assembled group.
His weapons were already out of sight and he raised his hands high above his head with practiced ease. He didn’t try to shout out to the advancing officer’s that the danger was over, that the snake had been the enemy and now it was dead. They wouldn’t be listening, not yet. The police would see vampires and wereanimals and they would jump to conclusions.
So Steve used his humanity to shield them, knowing he was the one person here that the cops might hesitate to shoot first and ask questions later.
He didn’t allow himself to think about why he’d been so quick to protect them all.
It could still have gone wrong, tensions and confusion alike were clearly high among the officers, and with so many nervous trigger fingers present an ‘accident’ was almost to be expected.
Thankfully Hopper appeared, having led in one of the groups.
He started shouting orders the second he recognized Steve.
“Weapons down! I said DOWN! Hold your fire! He’s one of us!”
Hopper rushed the stage, wide eyes sweeping over the carnage as he made his way over to where Steve stood, still with his hands up.
“You can relax, kid. What the hell happened here?”
Steve let his arms drop, rolling his shoulders as he explained to Hopper, in as few words as possible, how bad his night had gone.
When he was done the chief raked a hand over his face and let out a long string of profanities.
“I know I'm going to regret asking this,” he said after a while, “but why the hell would anyone perform with something like that?!”
Steve shook his head. “Your guess is as good as mine, Hop.”
“You gotta admit, it was a pretty badass show until the cobra ate its trainer.” Dustin chimed in, suddenly standing right next to Steve where a moment ago he was on the other side of the stage.
“Jesus, Dustin.” Steve yelped. “Stomp your feet or something when you do that!”
“Sorry.”
“Friend of yours?” Hopper asked.
“Yea, one of the kids I used to babysit back home.” Steve answered.
“I was human then.” Dustin added, grinning.
Hopper said nothing but gave Steve a pointed look that told him very clearly that they would be talking about this later.
“Okay folks,” Hopper began, raising his voice a little to address the small crowd. “We’re going to need official statements from all of you. As long as everyone cooperates and we do this in a calm and orderly fashion, we can all get out of here at a decent hour.”
Several hushed but frantic conversations broke out behind Steve. He didn’t blame the preternaturals for being nervous, relations between their kind and the police were still not the best, but with the murder this morning he also couldn’t blame the cops for being wary of the vamps. He just hoped everyone could keep their cool, there’d already been enough fighting and bloodshed for one night.
-
A bunch of the cops left once it became clear that their numbers weren’t necessary. The act of trust went a long way to relax the wolves, rats, and vampires. Everyone remaining had filed into the backstage area. Eddie gave Hopper access to a few of the dressing rooms so he could conduct the interviews in private, and the whole thing was turning out to be surprisingly civilized.
Everyone who fought the snake sat against the wall in a rough line along the hallway, each waiting their turn to speak with the police, including Steve. Technically Hopper had already given him a pass to go home, accepting his initial comments on the matter as his statement, but he couldn’t bring himself to leave just yet. He wanted to keep an eye on things.
While they waited, one of the werewolves from the band approached Eddie, groveling. “I’m so sorry, master, we didn’t think something like this could happen.”
Steve was a short ways down the line sitting with Dustin and still he couldn’t help overhearing.
Master?
Why would the werewolves be calling Eddie master?
“I told you, you don’t have to call me that.” The vampire quickly replied.
The werewolf shuffled in place. Now that it was all over, he probably thought he would be punished somehow, since they’d been the ones responsible for bringing the snake in here in the first place.
“Right, right. Sorry, it’s just. The last vampire we belonged to who could called wolves was really strict about all that. Titles and stuff.”
“Keep your voice down!” Eddie hissed.
“Sorry! Again, fuck sorry. Just, aren't you going to punish us?”
“We’ll talk about this later.” The vampire replied, a little growl in his voice as he dismissed the wolf from his sight.
“You’re letting them off easy,” Max said to Eddie from her place next to him.
“Not now, Red. I don’t need another lecture from you.”
“Fine, but remember– you are the one who brought me here.”
Steve wasn’t quite sure what to make of it all. Eddie hadn’t had an animal to call before. Had his power grown that much in just a few months? It was odd, usually after a few hundred years that was it for a vampire, as powerful as they would get. It sounded like he didn’t want people to know either, which was a curious thing all on its own.
It took nearly two hours to get through all the interviews but finally Dustin exited the office with Hopper coming out right behind him, the last one to go for the night. Steve stood, intending to give Dustin his goodbyes when a cool hand wrapped around his wrist to stop him.
He whirled, almost drawing his gun until he realized it was Eddie. He wrenched his arm out of the vampire’s grasp and took a step back, rubbing fingers on the spot he’d been touched as though he’d been burned.
Eddie's eyes shimmered with something. Anger? Hurt? Confusion? Steve didn’t know. Told himself he didn’t care. The vampire sighed. “Why do things never go to plan with you?”
“One of the many reasons we should stay far away from each other.” Steve replied.
“Is that really what you still want?”
“Yes.”
“What about your murder investigation?”
Steve grit his teeth. He was sure it was a ploy of some kind, a bid to stay in touch, but on the off chance Eddie actually came up with something helpful, he answered.
“If you think of anything relevant, have Dustin get in touch with me.”
-
It was around 3am when Steve parked in his driveway, finally home after the night from hell. In comparison this was an early night for him, but he was exhausted regardless for so many reasons. Not the least of which being the presence of an unfamiliar car parked on the street in front of his house. A rental. He wasn’t expecting anyone that he could recall, but he had a pretty good idea as to who might have popped in for an unexpected visit at this odd hour.
The lamp in the living room had been switched on. Steve could see through the sheer drapes in his front windows. At least she wasn’t trying to be creepy this time.
He unlocked the front door and stepped inside, “Hey Nance,” falling from his lips as he pushed it closed and engaged the deadbolt.
She was laying on his couch, feet propped up the cushions, at ease as if she lived there with an open magazine in her lap.
“Hey yourself.” She said, finally looking up and taking in his disheveled appearance. “Rough night?”
Though he hadn’t gotten all that close to the snake on his own, he still looked like he’d been through the ringer, and of course he’d gotten some blood on him when he hugged Dustin.
Steve shrugged. “The usual.”
She raised an eyebrow. “The usual, huh? Do you make a habit out of fighting giant man-eating cobra’s then?”
Steve gaped at her. “How did you…” he trailed off, before answering his own question. “You were there.”
She nodded.
“Why?”
“I like music.” She hedged.
He didn't buy it, and he was a little pissed off now too. “And when the shit went down, you didn’t think we could have used your help?”
“You and your…friends seemed to have it handled. I didn’t think you’d want me to interfere.”
He let the friend's comment go for now. He was tired and in no mood to argue. Better to find out what she was doing here so he could get to bed.
“What are you doing back in town, Nancy? And don’t try and give me some bullshit about the concert. We both know you can’t stand that kind of music”
She snapped her magazine closed and sat up, scooting back to make some room on the couch and patted the seat next to her in invitation. Steve sighed, but crossed the room anyway and sat down.
“I’ve been offered another contract to kill the master of the city.” She said, no preamble this time.
Steve concentrated on breathing evenly and tried to think. “Okay. His identity is public knowledge so I'm not sure why you're here.”
Nancy furrowed her brow, clearly expecting a different reaction. The problem was, he wasn’t sure which one to give her. He wasn’t sure how he felt about the news. Nancy was far from the only person after the vampire these days, but she definitely posed the most real threat to Eddie’s life.
“I just didn't want to betray our friendship by going after him without talking to you first.” She explained.
“You don’t need my permission. I don’t know why you think I'd care.” He said defensively.
“Okay, whatever you say. Care to help a girl out with a daytime resting place then? I can’t imagine he’s kept the old one after what we did to Billy.”
It was impossible not to react then, and he could only hope she took his flinching as a side effect of reminiscing about what they’d done together and not because he was afraid she would figure out the truth. The vampires did still live beneath the theater. He hadn’t been sure, but after his little run in with Eddie after the interviews he’d walked Dustin under the stage himself. It was probably irrational, but he’d needed to make sure the kid was completely safe before leaving for the night.
Would Steve’s life be easier with Eddie gone?
Probably.
But when he tried to picture a world without the vampire in it, he felt a sharp pang deep in his chest. He wouldn't stop Nancy, but he couldn’t bring himself to help her either.
“Sorry, I can't help you.” It was a bit more honest than he’d meant to be. He could have just said he didn't know. If Nancy caught the double meaning of his words, she didn’t say, and she didn’t share any more of her plan with him.
“No problem.” Nancy said, rising from the couch to make her way to the front door. It was one of her best qualities. She might show up unannounced but she rarely outstayed her welcome.
She paused by the door, turning to face him again. “You know, even if I don't take this contract, someone else will.”
“I know.” He said. What else could he say?
“I’ll have to give the client my answer soon. Do you want to know one way or the other?”
Steve shook his head, already turning away from her and walking towards his bedroom. She’d lock the door behind her. “Have a good night Nance.” He said over his shoulder.
“You too.”
-
The next afternoon found Steve and Robin working up a sweat as they ran, closing in on the end of their fifth and final mile of the day. He had planned to call and cancel their workout after the action packed night he’d had, but then he woke up with Eddie's name on his lips and a fire in his belly that wouldn’t go out no matter how hard he stroked himself.
He needed the run to clear his head almost as much as he needed to tell his best friend about the colossal mistake he’d made.
They had taken the first mile at an easy pace to warm their muscles and he took the opportunity to fill her in on everything while they still had enough breath to talk. From the murder scene with Hop, to the snake, to Nancy, and everything in between, he told her all, including his transgressions on the floor of the Corroded Coffin’s bathroom. By the time he was done they were warmed up and running full out, neither able to keep up the conversation although he could feel her watching him with concerned eyes.
They finished their final loop around the neighborhood and collapsed on Steve's front porch to catch their breath.
Steve knew she was itching to give her two cents on everything he had shared, but he also knew he had a least a minute or two before she'd be able to form full sentences. He pulled out his phone to check messages, having turned it on silent for their workout. There were two voicemails, both from Hopper. It wasn't a good sign.
First message. Recorded at one thirty nine p.m. “Harrington, sorry to bother you again so soon after last night. I just wanted to let you know we got an I.D. on the vic from yesterday. Rick Lipton. That’s all for now, we’re still gathering information. Give me a call if the name means anything to you.”
Robin was looking at him expectantly, he told her the news while he waited for the second message to play. It had only come in a few minutes ago.
Second message. Recorded at three fifteen p.m. “Steve. Shit, kid, we got another one. I’ll text you the address. Don't worry about calling me unless you can’t make it. Just get here as soon as you can.”
Steve hung up and jumped to his feet. “Shit, Robin I'm sorry I have to go.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Another crime scene. He didn’t leave any details but I'm willing to bet it’s the same as yesterday.”
Steve went inside to change out of his jogging clothes with Robin following close behind.
“You said the first victim’s name was Rick Lipton?” She asked.
Steve kept moving as they talked, pulling on a clean pair of jeans and polo shirt. “Yeah. Do you think you could look into him for me? See if he has any connection with vampires?”
“I don’t need to, I already know he does.”
That stopped Steve in his tracks.
“What? How?”
“He’s a member of Humans Against Vampires. Or at least he was a few months ago. I remember seeing his name on a list when you had me look into the hate groups for the vampire murders a few months ago. I’ll double check to be sure but I've got a pretty good memory for names.”
“Okay, yeah. Do that and let me know but I'm sure you’re right. I’ll tell Hop. I don’t know what it means yet but at least it’s something.”
-
The second crime scene was in the middle of nowhere and took Steve over an hour to get to and since it was so late into October the sun was already starting to go down by the time he pulled his car in next to Hopper’s SUV. He was definitely going to be late to work.
This victim was female and unlike their previous one, her body had probably been laying there all day before someone had finally discovered it, a product of the off the beaten path location. She was curled on her side rather than laid out flat on her back, but otherwise the two scenes were pretty similar. It was clearly another body dump, as things were far too clean, the woman had to have been attacked elsewhere. Just like the previous victim, this one too carried multiple fresh vampire bites. Steve hadn’t taken the time yet to measure them but he knew without a doubt when he did he would find they were all different sizes.
Hopper stood close by while Steve examined the body, telling him about his own meeting the night before with Jason Carver of the Order of the Eternal. It seemed like the police had gotten the better end of the deal on that split, as their sit-down had been uneventful and not lasted more than five minutes.
The long and short of it was that Jason claimed not to know anything. He said he hadn’t sensed ANY new master level vamps in town, which, fine. Eddie hadn’t sensed their rogue master vampire murderer either, but there were in fact new master vampires in town. Steve had met two of them last night. So either Jason was lying, or he wasn’t powerful enough to sniff out Max and Argyle. Either way, Carver wasn’t going to be any help to them with this case. Steve wasn’t surprised.
He didn’t say any of that to Hopper though, only nodded along as the older man talked. He didn’t like lying to him or keeping him in the dark but Steve was almost sure that the two new vampires had nothing to do with these murders. The problem was, they fit the profile Steve himself had suggested and he didn’t want the police to get distracted in solving this crime by thinking they had discovered viable suspects.
“Eddie wasn’t much more help than that, he isn’t aware of any new masters in town either. I asked him to get in touch with me if that ever changes but that’s about it.”
“Hmm” Hopper hummed in acknowledgement. “It was a good thought but I guess us mere humans are on our own with this one, just like always.”
The sun had fully set as they talked and Steve was forced to use the flashlight on his cell phone to see well enough to measure the bites on the woman’s arm. It was difficult to balance the device in one hand and measure with the other and it occurred to him that he could probably pull on the power he shared with Eddie and be able to see in the dark just fine. It would certainly make his task easier but the more stubborn part of his brain argued that it wasn’t a good enough reason to use the thing he most despised.
He rested his measuring hand lightly on the body and he inched the tape measure out with two fingers. He realized too late that he could have asked Hopper to hold the light, but he was already here and managing so it was fine.
It was fine, until the skin beneath his hand became softer somehow, more alive in a way he couldn’t quite describe. His gaze flicked up to the woman’s face and Steve gasped. He could have sworn that a moment ago she had looked terrible. Drawn, skin a little gray and eyes sunken. Now she looked like she could wake up any minute. As if she’d been walking along this stretch of road and decided to lay down and take a nap.
“Hey, Hop?” Steve called out, voice a little shaky. “Does she look…different to you?”
“Now that you mention it, sorta looks like she’s asleep. What do you make of it?” Hopper said, sounding a little nervous as well.
Steve’s heart rate picked up. He had the sinking feeling that he’d been wrong to assume that these victim’s wouldn’t rise as vampires and may have made a very deadly error in judgment.
“Where did you take the man’s body?” He rushed the question out, terrified of the answer. “The victim from yesterday. Is he at the regular morgue or the one reserved for vampire victims?”
His only hope now was that they hadn’t listened to him.
It was standard procedure to take any victim with a vampire bite to a special morgue in the city that was equipped with a safe room for any bodies who might potentially rise after their death. Steve had told Hopper that these victim’s were safe, but now he wasn’t sure.
“The vamp one I think. Damnit, kid. Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”
“Unfortunately, yes. You have to call over there right now, Hop. If I was wrong about this, he could have risen tonight. If they don't have him locked up…” Steve trailed off, taking a deep breath. “I’ve never heard of a vampire rising after an attack like this, I don't know if he’ll be a normal vampire or some out of control revenant.”
“Fuck!” Hopper cursed, stepping away to make the call.
Steve rose to his feet, wiping his suddenly clammy hands off on his pants, and waited.
Hopper was pacing back and forth about 15 feet away with his phone pressed tightly to his ear. He hadn’t uttered a word yet that Steve could hear, and he braced himself for the worst. Finally, the chief came jogging back, a grim look on his face.
“I called three times. No answer. Any chance they’re out to lunch, er, dinner?”
Steve shook his head. “Someone should be there, there’s supposed to be a staff member on site overnight in case someone wakes up. I need to get over there right now.” He turned ready to rush to his car until Hopper intercepted him.
“No chance, kid. We’ll go over there together. You ride with me, I can get us there quicker.”
Steve didn’t like it but he wasn’t the one in charge here, even if this was all his fault. He nodded and got into the passenger seat of the police SUV. Hopper was giving orders to the few remaining officers on the scene, likely telling them to take caution with this body for all the obvious reasons.
Minutes later they were careening down the highway at top speed headed back into the city with the full show of lights and sirens going when Steve’s phone rang. He wasn’t going to answer it and briefly considered throwing the damn thing out the window of the moving car just to make the irritating sound stop, but it was work calling and a glance at the clock told him he was very, very late.
Steve sighed and answered, “Dad?”
“Steven, I…What’s all that noise?”
Fuck. “Police sirens.”
“Why do they sound so close?”
Steve sighed, pressing the heel of his hand hard into his forehead as he tried to keep his cool. “Because I'm inside of a police car.” Idiot. “Look, before you start yelling I…”
“I’m not calling to yell at you, I'm just calling to let you know that when you didn’t call and didn’t show up I took matters into my own hands.”
Steve wasn’t sure he liked the sound of that. “What does that mean?” He asked.
“I convinced Wayne to come out of retirement, on a part time basis at least. I sent him out on your appointments.”
“Didn’t I have three raisings booked for tonight?”
“Yes, why?”
Steve pulled the phone away from his mouth and growled a little in frustration. He wanted to say, because Wayne is getting old and tired, and Steve wasn’t convinced he could raise more than one zombie per night now let alone three, but he loved and respected Wayne too much to say all that out loud.
“Nothing, just, isn’t that a lot for someone who’s been out of it for a while?” Steve settled on saying, it was a fair enough question
His dad made a little huff over the line before responding. “If you’re that worried, then I suggest you hurry up with whatever it is you're doing with that awful police chief and meet him at your next appointment.”
Steve would try to do just that, but he didn't appreciate his father’s tone.
“Fine.”
“Oh, Steven, I almost forgot. I also have a message for you. You got a call at the office– something about an emergency staking at the vamp morgue. It seems they had a victim brought in who turned out to have a dying will?”
“When did that come in?”
“A few hours ago.”
“Why didn’t someone call me right away?!” Steve shouted.
“Well, If you’d showed up to work when you were supposed to you would have gotten it right away.”
He wanted to reach through the phone and tear his father's head off. He settled for hanging up on him without saying another word. It wasn’t a fair trade but at least this way he might keep his job.

Fic tag game! Tagged by the lovely @sweeteatercat , thank you!!
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 4
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 229,987
3. What fandoms do you write for? DBH
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? I don't even have 5 fics 😅 but here they are in order: 1. he's making a list; i'm checking him out 2. long way home 3. stupid sexy priest 4. make my wish come true
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Always! I haven't responded to comments on my latest chapter yet, but I will. It's really important to me: 1) If someone takes the time to read my work AND share their thoughts with me, that really does mean so much, saying thank you (and clumsily attempting to express the depth of my gratitude in an annoying amount of emojis) is the least I can do; and 2) This is a community! The validation is nice, yes, but I write to connect with people. I love hearing what people have to say and I love to talk with them about it! I've made friends through my ao3 comments, we're all here because we love the same thing, and if you're excited about my silly contributions OF COURSE I'm gonna want to talk to you! Your reactions to the work are just as important as the work itself imo. Art is a conversation!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably make my wish come true, just because it's an alternate POV of a scene in a different fic so the main conflict remains unresolved. But it still has a feel-good ending! Sad endings don't exist in my world
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I'm not sure! What do you guys think? Generally in my fics I try to wrap everything up in a happy little bow without everything being too perfect--we still have to work, we still make mistakes, life is still hell; but it's easier when we have each other and have found faith in ourselves.
8. Do you get hate on fics? I haven't yet...... (bracing myself for my first hate comment to come through as soon as I publish this post)
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind? Sure do! I write the over-the-top, too long, lots of emotion, lots of laughing/banter, taking-off-your-pants-is-awkward kind. Sex is cool but friendship is the most romantic thing to me ❤️ I enjoy writing smut the most when they really, genuinely like each other as people.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? I have not and I doubt I would. Probably the closest I would get is an au based on another piece of media (I do dream of a hankcon twin peaks au)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I have never even considered that being a thing until now
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Someone requested to translate one of my fics but I don't know if it will ever come to fruition. I hope it does though, I would love that!
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No but I've briefly discussed it with a friend... now that I'm done with the bb I'll need to contact them and see if they're still interested because I sure am 👀👀
14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Hankconnnnnnnnnn
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? I started a fic where Connor works in a sex shop and a very vanilla Hank comes in looking for something to spice things up with his girlfriend. He gets some fuzzy handcuffs and they do their job when it comes to Hank's boner, unfortunately that has more to do with Hank fantasizing about the person who sold them to him more than anything else. He breaks up with the girlfriend and most of the fic would be Hank continuing to frequent the sex shop as an excuse to talk to Connor as he gets more and more in over his head thanks to Connor's recommendations. It was really good in my head, but when I put it to paper it just... wasn't. So I'll probably never continue it.
16. What are your writing strengths? Characterization, I think! I get a lot of compliments on it. It's the best feeling when someone falls in love with one of my characters ❤️
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Setting 😖 I like to pepper in details as I go, I really struggle when the scene calls for describing the whole-ass place at once
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? If y'all want a fic about the Duolingo characters, sure. Otherwise I'm sure I'd be abysmal at it. I'm not proficient enough in any other language to get the voice right.
19. First fandom you wrote for? DBH. I am a fic-writing newbie and also I tend to stick with one thing for 4,000 years
20. Favourite fic you've ever written? Probably long way home, it's not as popular as mall santa but there's so much of my soul in that fic. Artistically and thematically, it's very me, and it's also the story that taught me how to write. I had never written any work of fiction before I started it (Hankcon was just that strong) and now I never want to do anything else. Thank you for reading, if you want to play consider yourself tagged! 💖

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you for the tag @sparklyslug 🖤
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
4
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
222,566 (lol at that fic to word count ratio)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Almost entirely Stranger Things, though I have worked on some OFMD and Shadow and Bone (tv) stuff that never saw the light of day.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
I only have the 4 but by order of kudos most to least : we know where we're going any other way cabin fever swing for the fences
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! It sometimes takes me a little while, but I love comments so so much - they mean a whole lot and always completely make my day
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
None of mine have angsty endings, but I guess it would have to be we know where we're going based purely on the drama contained in the last chapter
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Definitely any other way, but swing for the fences will be up there too when it's finished
8. Do you get hate on fics?
It's never happened! Srsly thank fuck too cause I'd cry lol
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
You bet - it doesn't really fall into a specific type I guess, probably tends towards the romantic and soft? I try to make it realistic, with little things going wrong and laughter etc.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I've never written a crossover but I wouldn't be opposed - I think they're neat
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I hope not!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have not
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No but one of my best friends is my editor and she helps me so much with these fics it is insane, I seriously don't think any of them would have ever been fully finished much less posted if not for her
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I mean it's probably gotta be Steddie based purely on my own ridiculous behaviour about them. They're just so fun to shake around. But I've also always really loved Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in all their lovely forms (except for that one time 😒 but we won't talk about that)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The Izzy/OC I started ages ago - rip
16. What are your writing strengths?
I feel pretty comfortable with dialogue and describing physicality in general - love zooming in on little moments and making them a big deal for no reason
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I am bad at big picture stuff; whether that be sticking to a planned length or just not adding a ton of extra little scenes that pop into my head as I'm writing. I think I have a tendency to muddy up my plot lines.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Gonna just repeat what @sparklyslug said here: I have no thoughts in particular. If it works in the fic and you've made sure your translation is right if you're not fluent in that language, hell yeah.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Sherlock Holmes (arthur conan doyle version babyyyy)
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh man I really don't know, I love them all in different ways! Probably just cause they're the most recent I'll say that I'm really happy with how cabin fever turned out but I think my fav might be swing for the fences cause it is just so so fun to write.

In a lot of fanfiction/headcanons MC is shown to be snarky with Rime and you even have the option to taunt him about your relationship with Felix when he first tries to kill you in Felix’s route.
Even though I can imagine I would have less than positive feelings for someone trying to kill me, I think I would still feel bad for a person who had literally been through hell and back and who had returned only to find their lover with someone else.
I think I would try to assure him his friends hadn’t gotten over him, that they had spoken fondly of him and would probably happily take him back if he’d stop soul-stealing.
In future interactions…I think I would try to assure him that Felix didn’t ‘get over’ him just because I had come along. That the way he was acting now: stealing souls, trying to kill people, working with the freaking LoS all made him a far cry from the person Felix had fallen in love with, and it certainly wasn’t just that Rime had become worthless to him or anything. (suddenly realizes one might take offense to that and worries how he’ll react).
I would also try to encourage him to come back with the Starsworn, tell him that maybe his friends will help him and even if they don’t, I will.
So yeah, I’m kinda sensitive, more interested in helping than in banter. Would that make me a wet blanket to him? Or basically, do you have any ideas about how Rime would react to an MC [in Felix’s route] who obviously sympathized with him? Would he be offended by it, not wanting their pity? Would it make him dislike them less? Think they’re less interesting? Etc?
Hi Anon!
Rime is,, a tricky one for me. Part of that is because his character is so radically different between Felix and Sage's route (and he never showed up at all in Anisa's), and part of it is because 9/10 times we see him, he's trying to kill someone.
It sucks that we didn't really get the option to try and reach out to him like this. Maybe a little towards the end of Felix's route, if we're gonna look at it loosely. And then in Sage's route he's just,, like,,, back with the Starsworn for no clear reason. So clearly he's at least open to the idea.
That being said, I think you'd have a lot more luck getting through to him in Sage's route then you would in Felix's. In Sage's route, Felix never ended up accepting Rime's death, Rime never ends up feeling replaced (at least, not in the same way as in Felix's route), etc etc. The main reason he hates us there is because we have the Astrolabe, and you could totally just say something like 'oh the Astrolabe probably just went to me because you were still dead, don't take it personally', and while he'd still be upset he probably would have stopped working with Gramme a lot sooner.
In Felix's route however,,, we see a handful of examples (the most notable being the end of Chapter 13 assuming you were going down that ending) of Rime feeling regretful for the things he's had to do. So I think there's at least a part of him that wasn't corrupted by death/The Void and is still the 'choir boy' that loved his friends and fought for justice. I think that's the part that was most hurt by the Astrolabe rejecting him. It made him feel like he really was evil. But, anyways, genuine sympathy (empathy?) for him would hurt him, at least at first. It would just highlight how good-hearted you are, which is why the Astrolabe chose you and not Rime. Rime might also see it as part of why Felix fell for you, and that hurts him even worse. He would hate you, but he'd hate himself more. It might help him break free of LoS, but I feel like there's a really important piece of the puzzle (about LoS and Rime's partnership) that was going to be revealed in Chapter 14/15 that we'll now presumably never get.
By the same token I'm not the most confident when it comes to how I write Rime so take my opinion with a grain of salt lol
TLDR; Being sympathetic to Rime probably would help in Sage's route but probably wouldn't make a massive difference in Felix's

Around 2000 Words. 18+ in places (those chapters will be marked as 'Mature / sexual content' just to be safe). Please inform me if you wish to be tagged or untagged from posts. If the text is in italics and orange it's Kirby's inner monologue. If the text is coloured but not in italics, it's either dialogue or a P.O.V change (P.O.V changes will be in bold and translated dialogue will appear in square [ ] brackets), Key below. Quick note on Geia's text colour: Yes I do know that as Greed she should be in yellow but I decided to colour the men's dialogue yellow so Geia was changed to be pink like the other women in the story outside of the main 8.
The Main 8: Damo - Bio. Vi - Bio. Billie - Bio. Geia - Bio. Kirby - Bio. Honey - Bio. Eli - Bio. Sara - Bio.
Tumblr media
Kirby's P.O.V:
"Stop, no, Eddie, ya hands are freezin'." Kirby giggles, her voice sounding more Irish than usual.
Eddie's eyes brighten, "Say that again."
"Say what again?"
"What ya just said."
"Wha? Freezin'?" Her accent thickens as she, fully, drops the 'work voice' she uses around English speakers.
Eddie kisses her deeply, pulling away to whisper against her lips, "Ya voice is much sexier with the accent."
"If you react like that when ya meet my family, ya gonna have a ragin' stiffy the entire time we're there."
"You think I care about that, when ya voice is so sexy, C'mere." Eddie pulls Kirby onto his lap, kissing her deeply.
"You go do ya work, I'll stay here and do mine, okay, a stór [my treasure]?"
"A'ight, Ma, I'll let ya sort everythin' out. I'll make sure we see ya family durin' the holidays."
"Okay, my darlin', I love you."
"I love ya, so fuckin' much, my Celtic princess."
"My American boy, Soldier of New York."
Eddie gives Kirby one final kiss before he heads off, it's short but sweet, and Kirby's left smiling after he leaves.
During the show, four photos 'glitch' onto the screen, the first during the first match, the second during the second match, and so on, the only untouched match is Moxley vs Omega. All four are put there intentionally. All four were agreed upon by Tony Khan and us... I hope people get the message loud and clear.
Tumblr media
A couple days pass, Kirby moves all of her stuff into Eddie's home again, she gives up her life in Virginia fully, returning to the wrestling world. The only difference is that she's no longer brainwashed by Damien. On the 9th Eddie has work and Kirby comes with him.
Tumblr media
A further four images are shown, this time avoiding Eddie's match. That match has whispers all throughout it, playing over the loudspeakers.
"The road to hell is a one way track, I'm driving backwards to escape it." Is the first line, two minutes into the match.
Around two minutes later comes the second whisper, "Some bridges must be burned."
Another two minutes pass and a third whisper is heard, "Some demons have demons, it's time to fight mine."
Right before the end of the match comes the forth and final whispered line, "I speak the ugly truths, his hounds never listen."
Eddie ignores Kirby's plans to celebrate his 39th birthday, opting to stay in bed together, and Eddie sleeps for the majority of the day. Kirby works beside him and chuckles when Eddie wakes up, only to kiss her. Eddie manages to convince her to have 'birthday sex' with him, several times over, and unprotected each time.
Eddie and Kirby fly out to Wales on the 18th, spending Christmas with her parents, before flying back to Jacksonville on the 27th. Eddie goes to work for the tribute show on the 30th. Kirby stays in their hotel, she sits in bed all day, numb from the news, only moving for food, or to get a bottle of water, or to throw up. Eddie makes sure they fly home, to New York, that night, immediately going to bed with Kirby and falling asleep.
Kirby wakes up to the sound of Eddie humming, she checks her phone '10:00 Thursday 31 December', "Shit, ten am, I slept in, fuck." she whispers to herself.
"Wifey," Eddie smirks from the doorway, "Got ya somethin', several things, also..." he leaves for a moment, coming back with Homicide by his side, "look who came over." Eddie beams.
"That's all well and good, now go away so I can get dressed."
Eddie pushes Homicide out of the doorway, and looks at Kirby intently, his body filling the doorway, "Sexy Wifey?" He raises an eyebrow.
"Edward, ya know damn well I sleep in my underwear... only reason I don' have a bra on, is 'cause ya broke it."
Eddie closes the bedroom door behind himself, climbing on the bed and pinning Kirby underneath him, kissing every inch of skin he can get to. He gets up and watches her get dressed, pulling her into a gentle kiss, refusing to let her be more than an arm's length away from him.
"So sexy, my wife, sexiest woman in the world, ya so fuckin' beautiful, and ya mine, an-"
Kirby kisses Eddie to shut him up, "Eddie, shush, ya got me stuff, I would like ta know what."
Eddie hoists her over his shoulder, she makes herself comfy, he proceeds to carry her out to the back patio. Homicide shakes his head as he looks at Eddie, whispering something in Spanish that Kirby doesn't fully hear, he chuckles when Eddie puts Kirby down.
"Hi Nelson."
"Ey, Mami, ya married his idiotic ass?" Homicide jokes, earning himself a 'you stfu' look from Eddie.
"Eddie, do not start 'effin and blindin' at this time of the mornin'." Kirby warns.
Homicide looks at Kirby like she's an alien and Eddie chuckles.
"I won't, I promised ya mother I'd be respectful around ya," Eddie smiles softly, "I will, howeva, tell you to eat the breakfast I got ya."
"A chopped cheese ain't breakfast." Homicide murmurs.
"Eddie, stop glarin' at 'im. As my grandmother would say, stop glarin', stop gawkin', keep talkin'."
"Why do ya talk like tha'?"
"Because, Nelson, I was raised by a primarily Irish family, who speak Irish slang an' have Irish accents. I, me self, was born in Kilkenny in Ireland." Kirby explains, midway through eating her 'breakfast', aka the chopped cheese Eddie bought her.
"You were born in Ireland?" Eddie asks, a beaming grin on his face.
"Yeah, I thought my Da told ya."
Eddie shakes his head 'no', lifting Kirby's head to kiss her passionately, refusing to leave her side, even as he lights up a cigarette.
"My wifey, my Irish woman. For so long, I thought you were born in Wales, but ya weren't. Can you eat faster, I wanna make a baby."
"Fuckin' niño [child/boy]." Homicide groans.
"With how my stomach's been actin' up recently, ya already have." Kirby mumbles.
Both Eddie and Homicide go still, Kirby can feel them staring at her.
"The feck are ya gawkin' at me for, your the dope who wanted ta have 'birthday sex'."
"Homicide, keep her there, I'm gettin' a fuckin' pregnancy test." Eddie grabs his wallet and rushes off, leaving Kirby with Nelson for around ten minutes.
"Ya married him?" Nelson/Homicide asks.
"Indeed I did."
"Congrats. Ya think ya pregnant?"
"At the least it's a stomach bug, but considering the amount of times me and Ed have, you know, 'gone at it', I'll be fuckin surprised if I ain't up the duff."
"Ya gon' let him smoke aroun' the baby?"
"Eddie's smart enough to know not ta. I trust him on that."
"So... ya got any name ideas?"
"Something with an 'E' at the beginning," She murmurs as she finishes her breakfast, "I gotta put this in the bin, so we gotta go inside."
Homicide follows Kirby into the house, taking in the changes she's made to the place. Kirby smiles when she sees Homicide smile.
"This place..."
"Actually feels like a home now?"
"Yea, I like it." Homicide murmurs.
"Thanks, I kinda want to paint the walls, but that's for another day." Kirby shrugs.
"I thought I told you to keep her there." Eddie grumbles as he walks back into the house.
"Hey Papi."
"Hey Ma, go figure out how to use this, I gotta figure out how to gain back street cred."
Kirby takes the box and goes to the bathroom. It'll be fine, it's too early to tell.
She quickly figures out how to use the test and does so. Oh well, time to pee on a stick.
She paces back and forth as she waits for the results. God, could this take any longer.
She looks at the 'stick' and freezes in shock. How am I gonna tell Eddie?
"Oh fuck... Homicide, make Eddie sit down!" She hollers through the door, taking a deep breath and grabbing the test, checking her pulse before leaving the bathroom.
"Ya not, ya not or the test is too early, or somethin' right?" Eddie asks, his eyes wider than usual.
"Edward, you know ya love me." She mutters, holding the test behind her back.
"Yeah, you're my calm." He smiles softly.
"Would you love me if I was chubbier... say nine months chubbier?" She asks, handing him the test.
Eddie looks at the test, then at Kirby, then back at the test, then back at Kirby. He beams, getting up from his seat, picking Kirby up and spinning her in his arms, "I'm gonna be a dad, I'm gonna be a motherfuckin' father." He chuckles wildly, putting Kirby down and pulling her into a passionate kiss.
Kirby smiles softly, "We're gonna be parents. We're gonna have a kid, there's gonna be a little mix of us running around."
Eddie hoists Kirby over his shoulder, "where the fuck is my phone? I gotta call Moxie, and Ma, and your father, and I gotta tell Eric, and my dad..."
"Eddie, breathe. Breathe, my handsome warrior, breathe." Kirby whispers.
Eddie keeps Kirby in his arms, grabbing his phone and calling everyone he can, and practically getting in a shouting match with Moxley, his brother, Eric, and his dad, Earl. About an hour after calling Ruth, she knocks on the door.
"Edward, let me in!" Ruthie yells through the door.
Kirby slinks her way out of Eddie's grasp, and goes to let her in, immediately being pulled into a hug.
"Hi, Ruthie." She sighs happily.
"Eddie told me the news."
"I know," Kirby giggles, "he had me over his shoulder when he called you."
"Eddie and you are the greatest thing to happen to each other, mi nuera [my daughter-in-law]. I'm so glad Eddie has you, you keep my son happy and calm. I may be his mother, but from now on we both will worry about him, don't let your fear mess with the baby's health. I'm always a phone call away." Ruth whispers, cupping Kirby's face in her hands before pulling her into a hug.
"Gracias, mi suegra [Thanks, my mother-in-law], if you ever need anything from me, Mamá [Mother], don't hesitate to call." Kirby whispers, pulling away and wiping her eyes.
"Everythin' okay over here? Ma, sweetheart, where you two cryin'?" Eddie asks, gently hugging his mother.
"Maybe... a'ight, yeah, but in my defence, it's not everyday that I get to have a sweet moment with ya Mam."
"C'mere, baby mama," Eddie chuckles softly, "let me hug both women in my life."
Kirby joins in the hug, kissing Eddie as she takes in the moment. Her husband, Eddie, her mother-in-law and the baby, or babies, growing in her womb, for the first time, in a long time, she feels like all's right with the world.
Kirby's parents are the next to find to find out, her Da whooping and hollering that his family's legacy will be continued, her Mam crying tears of happiness, and wishing the best for the 'young' couple.
The final person to find out, through Kirby and Eddie, is their boss, Tony Khan. Tony wishes them well, and tells them that Kirby can continue to work, as long as she doesn't get in the ring. Kirby agrees with the compromise.
She relaxes for the last few days of the year, and the first two of 2021, eventually getting bored of laying around and doing nothing.
"Eddie, baby daddy, Papi." Kirby calls from the bed as Eddie showers.
"Yeah, sexy Mami?" He calls back.
"There's ten days 'till my birthday, what do ya wanna do?"
Eddie smirks as he walks over, a towel around his waist, "I think you know what I wanna do, Ma."
He lets the towel drop and goes to kiss Kirby. She puts her hand in front of his face to block him.
"Ya already got me up the duff, Kingy, and we gotta fly back to Jacksonville soon. So, what do you wanna do before we leave?"
"I wanna fuck my wife, ya know, let her know I fuckin' love her." He chuckles.
