#things that are bingable you know

helloo...
i know i'm late, but i just binge watching Triage last night. i kinda love it that the mystery about the story revealed gradually. and the leads had nice chemistry, despite the low heat. and i enjoyed bingeing on it and pulling an all nighter.
so, i'd like to ask you, do you have any recommendations on bl series like Triage that are completed or ongoing, that the show would be enjoyable on binge watching?
it's super fine if you don't answer this.
thank youu and have a nice day.
10 BL Series to Binge Watch with Complex story elements
Okay, I'm not really a binger so these are my best guesses at keeping the tension alive. Also it seems like you want something on the meaty end in terms of length so only Thai and Taiwanese stuff qualified.
Case study: Triage (so obviously that would be on this list)
Tumblr media
1 Until We Meet Again
YouTube
Without question, a work of narrative genius with a powerful and cohesive romantic backbone and stellar performances. It is (to date) the only Thai BL (of c.250 watched) that I’ve rated a 10/10 predominantly on the basis of story structure. That said it is also very well cast (and it’s a BIG cast), with solid production values, and enduring pair branding as well as being the best Thai BL from a storytelling perspective. I think the story is good enough to carry the tensions. I also binges this on my first watch (it was already out when I discovered it) so I can attest to it being bingable. More discussion on why I love it so much here.
Tumblr media
2 He's Coming to Me
YouTube
Boy and ghost boy fall in love, must solve ghost’s murder. Peak pining but also pretty tame, features my favorite sweet but important coming out sequence. The third in my precious triumvirate of unbeatable Thai BLs, that are only nominally BL because the story, acting, and production values are so good. (Together with UWMA & 1k*).
Tumblr media
3 Not Me
YouTube
GMMTV gave us a dark disestablishment narrative (in a time of civil unrest) with established queer award-winning director Anucha and starring the biggest guns of BL, OffGun and THIS WAS AN AMAZING THING to get to experience at the time - nerve racking but remarkable. But was it ACTUALLY BL? It certainly has a lot of BL elements, but in the end romance was not what this show was about, or even what it was genuinely trying to be as a performance piece. Still a remarkable moment in Thai cinema, certainly worth your time. Don’t worry, it all ends happily. Full review.
Tumblr media
4 I Feel You Linger in the Air
grey (YouTube for some)
I truly loved this time travel romance BUT for the ending it would have gotten a 10/10 from me. IFYLITA is an exquisite BL, from filming techniques to narrative framework (much like Until We Meet Again). Steeped in history and family drama it edges into lakorn (but no as much as To Sir With Love and with way less scenery chewing). This is an elegant and classy BL… from Thailand which normally doesn't even try for classy. If HEA's are NOT important to you, you'll be fine, but I struggled. More here.
Tumblr media
5 Kiseki: Dear to Me
Gaga & Viki Y
The plot is totally ridiculous and slightly unhinged, but that’s normal for Taiwan. It involves all the tropes under a very casual framework of gay mafia gangs + food = love. Absolutely every character is queer. There’s a gum-ball machine of cameos, elder gay rep, great chemistry from all pairs, and a KILLER side couple. As a result Kiseki is a poster child for Taiwanese BL, and I happen to love Taiwanese BL. Bonus? They also managed to END IT WELL, which we cannot expect from Taiwan. (Triggers for knife play, child abuse, lingering trauma.)
Tumblr media
6 Make a Wish
grey (Trailer)
(from Sammon - Manner of Death & Triage) about a doctor who can see the dead and strikes a bargain with a wish-granting irreverent tree angel to try and cure himself - naturally they fall in love. Stars Fluke Natouch opposite not Ohm, but who cares bc Fluke has chemistry with everybody. Once again the Thai afterlife is incredibly bureaucratic but I enjoyed the premise and the unfolding of the story (it’s not predictable but still satisfying and with nice little twist). I like that the doctor is just gay af and has a fag hag bestie and everything. The cast is excellent but the comedic stylings are often too overblown and tonally off. It had sad parts and did make me cry but is ultimately happy with a great sex scene, good smiley kisses, and all the agency.
Tumblr media
7 HIStory 3: Trapped
Viki
Basically the definition of enemies to lovers from Lin Pei Yu. This is a cop + the mafia man he is chasing but WAIT, they fall in love. Added bonus side couple: assassin and nerd cop ALSO falling in love. It’s great. All the leads are stellar. Its high heat, fun action, and a bit of a mystery drama but pretty about all of it. My only warning is that the main couple doesn’t entirely end up together, it’s implied, but… amorphous ending.
Tumblr media
8 Never Let Me Go
YouTube
Bodyguard romance where poor boy must watch over rich boy for family obligation reasons. Simple premise well executed with a few bumps that made it feel like it was trying to tackle too much (when it wasn’t). Still, an enjoyable show that benefited from being handed to PondPhuwin who did a stellar job with their roles and chemistry. Of GMMTV handing out new series to established pairs in 2023 this is one of the most successful IMHO. It's typically Thai in that it's a bit bloated and has a confusing plot, but at least it HAD a plot and the central relationship is solid and loyal. The Our Skyy 2 follow up is great too. And very much adds to the cannon in a fun way rather than feeling superfluous - making this show ultimately 14 eps rather than 12.
Tumblr media
9 The Eclipse
YouTube
GMMTV does gay Blacklist with a good boy/bad boy pairing. This is a good show but the cast is excellent and the leads are absolutely flawless, which elevates it beyond just "a good show." We got a nuanced and multifaceted burgeoning relationship: philosophical (and socio-political) conflict contrasted to moments of empathy; flirtation contrasted to moments of genuine affection, plus plenty of angst. This narrative is less about love than it is about courage and tenderness. However, near the end the pacing was off and the plot frustrating. Still, this is an enjoyable watch, with a finale that features verbal consent and a fun blooper reel.
Tumblr media
10 Ghost Host Ghost House
YouTube
This is light horror combined with family drama built around a well executed BL trough-line that felt honestly queer with fantastic chemistry from the lead pair. (I hope that we see more of them.) Pluem delivers the softest most seductive krap ever, Tod Techit (Kewin) is one of the prettiest humans on the planet, and watching these boys flirt over noodles is an unalloyed pleasure. Use of I/you pronouns is super interesting and cute as well. For me, personally, the surrounding cast, premise, and story didn’t resonate but if you like a touch of gothic in your BL this might appeal.
BONUS!
Tumblr media
3 Will Be Free
YouTube
Queer AF crime thriller about three 20 somethings on the run after accidentally killing an assassin: a grifter, a nerdy mafia kid, and a stripper. They're chased by more assassins out for revenge.
It’s actually a remarkable piece of storytelling, using a pressure cooker of tension and suspense to bring about investigations into what love, romance, friendship, and identity actually mean. This show probably doesn’t qualify as BL but it does qualify as very very queer.
What it does well is examine many different aspects of queer identity, morality, and life choices based on repression and or acceptance of that identity using the framework of a crime triller.
It’s an adventure narrative, our three main characters are on the run together, being chased by assassins who are themselves dealing with the grief that results from love, all kinds of love. Meanwhile the 3 protagonists fall in love with each other and explore the boundaries and meaning of friendship/love.
Tumblr media
Manner of Death
WeTV
Gay romantic suspense series with added cactus baby. Doctor & Mafia boy can't keep hands off each other, so also end up with chili plant baby.
Am I making sense? No? Well neither does it, but ho boy is it fun to watch MaxTul do... whatever it is they're doing.
I like MoD a lot but I’m conflicted over it being actual BL. It’s a great gay romantic suspense, although the mystery element is its primary weakness.
MaxTul, the Kings of Chemistry, are, of course, perfect and perfectly cast (and chemically unfair), but their romance thread is more a distraction than an addition. Still, I could watch them make-out the phonebook. Watch along here.

HELLO, IVE JUST FINISHED WATCHING WEDNESDAY
because i am the biggest dumbest nerd when it comes to the addams family: ive made a crappy list of why wednesday is everything i hoped for and more and why it is absolutely fucking perfect. spoilers.
im not entirely sure on how to start slow with this one so im getting right fucking into it. enjoy reading the disaster of my thoughts on this masterpiece:
AMAZING CASTING. jenna is incredible as wednesday, catherine and luiz are the perfect morticia and gomez, i adored seeing christina ricci KICKING ASS. gwendoline christie was amazing as weems, fred armisen as fester???? lost my shit he was so perfect. i don’t think there was a single cast member i wasn’t amazed with.
no genuinely i loved all of the nevermore students
fell in love w enid so fast omg i was rooting for her so hard her arc was so awesome (her and ajax are so cute too)
rip rowan you would’ve loved wenclair
THING!!!: its not the addams family without thing, and its especially not the addams family if thing isn’t being a little shit stirrer the whole time. perfect beautiful i love him A++
THE WEDNESDAY/PUGSLEY DYNAMIC WAS SO ON POINT they literally have the actual best sibling dynamic
i now know that you have not lived until you’ve seen wednesday addams stuck in a love triangle. she is not a character that you would expect to have a romantic interest but now in my mind she’s just beautifully a-spec and probably demiromantic. yes obviously i love xavier.
don’t get mad at me but i don’t ship her w enid that much?? at least not romantically but hey i would not complain if we had a polycule or qpr!!!
also it was genuinely so cute to see wednesday making friends like. why was i sobbing so much when she hugged enid. holy fuck.
THE DANCE SCENE. SHES AN ICON SHES A LEGEND AND SHE IS THE MOMENT
i am referring to both her actual dancing and ofc “they couldn’t even spring for real pigs blood. its only paint.” so real.
cant even stop myself from mentioning that jenna ortega looks very hot covered in blood which happens a lot in this series. like almost every episode. jesus fucking christ i am so in love with her.
i am a huge edgar allen poe nerd so i fucking adored every little reference to his works. also the idea that he was an outcast is so real to me.
speaking of outcasts: ngl definitely could’ve come up with a better name, “outcasts” just made it sound weirdly like some awkward teen high school drama but you get used to it
wednesday’s visions were so cool??? i loved the whole goody addams thing their interactions were really cool and god i just was not expecting that at all.
ok tbh it was really weird that her name was goody, since “goody” is the puritan equivalent of “mrs.” (its short for goodwife) so idk why they did that but ok i’m still here for it
honestly in general they do a really good job of keeping you guessing. i was suspicious about almost every single character throughout the whole series.
in retrospect i should’ve known tyler was gonna be an asshole from the start cause. i mean. his name is tyler. no offense to my tylers, but be real when have you ever seen a tv show character named tyler that wasn’t a douche. i’ll wait.
i’ve typed tyler too many times and it no longer looks like a real name
episodes are nice and long but i obviously wish the series was longer, but it was super bingable and i’m probably gonna rewatch it 3 million times until the next season inevitably comes out.
not to be dorky but i loved how every episode title was a pun w the word “woe”
i have really horrible media literacy in the sense that i overthink EVERYTHING so to me like almost everything in that was beautifully executed symbolism and maybe it was but when i say i lost my shit when i noticed wednesday stand on enid’s side of the room and fsr thats the only example i can think of rn BUT STILL
overall 5 stars 10/10 show i cant wait for more i love the plot i love the characters i love the cast i will be recommending it to everyone ik and more

Okay, I wanna talk about the Pokemon anime for a second, because the way they've been treating the dub has been increasingly ridiculous and I need a place to vent about this and maybe try to spread awareness?
Long post, kinda rambly, sorry.
So I think most Pokemon fans are at least tangentially aware of some of the dub's problems. I know it definitely got some attention back when XY blew up and started getting attention outside of the usual anipoke sphere. You probably expect me to start talking about the soundtrack replacement here, but the much bigger issue at the moment is actually the release delay. Generally speaking, the English dub tends to release about 3-4 months behind the original Japanese release (XY actually had a good streak with only a 2-month gap up until the start of XYZ). It's not good, especially considering the standard set by Funimation for other popular weekly anime dubs, but at least it's consistent and we learned to just live with it. The Japanese episodes would release, the English side of the company would pretend they didn't exist, and English-speaking viewers either had to seek out fansubs or dodge spoilers for a couple of months. However, this situation has gotten much, much worse as of late.
The latest series, Pokemon Journeys (JN for short), aired its dub on Netflix. Netflix of course did its usual thing and released the series in batches every few months for people to binge. This is a problem for two reasons: First, JN just isn't a particularly bingable show. Due to the timeslot it originally aired in in Japan, the show is more episodic than any that came before, even the famously "slice-of-life" Sun & Moon. It works well in bit-sized morsels every week, but there's not usually enough connective tissue to feel satisfied consuming it all at once. Secondly, it destroyed the consistency I mentioned before. Instead of getting a new episode every week, we would get 12 episodes every few months, purely at the whim of whenever the hell Netflix decided to release them. It started out fine-ish, with about three month windows between releases to match the three months' worth of episodes each batch contained, but as the series went on, we started to see windows of four or five months between releases, inflating the dub delay problem to ridiculous levels. Today, June 23, the penultimate batch of episodes released, containing the grand finale of the Masters Tournament, where Ash defeated Leon to win the World Coronation Series. If you read that sentence and thought "huh, didn't that happen a while ago?" you would be correct. It aired in Japan all the way back in November, eight months ago. The first episode of the batch, Ash vs. Steven, is nearly an entire year old, first airing in July.
"Well," you might be thinking, "you said earlier that the English side of the company doesn't acknowledge the Japanese episode releases. If someone managed to completely avoid any news about the Japanese episodes, it's not as if they would get spoiled by the official English Twitter account, right?"
Right?
Tumblr media
Note the timestamp there (I'm in EST). Not only did they release this Tweet on the same day the finals aired, they did it as soon as the episode finished. Even for the people who followed the Japanese releases and watched the episode with fansubs or even raw, this is so early in the morning for most of the English-speaking audience that anyone who didn't get up early enough to watch the episode live could potentially be spoiled from it. Granted, the Internet was ablaze with spoilers regardless, but the official account joining in on the spoilers when the people it's supposed to be advertising to have no way of officially watching the episode certainly isn't a good look. Surely they wouldn't do it again, right?
Right?
Following Ash's departure from the anime, the next series was called Pokemon Horizons (HZ). One of its core story hooks is a mysterious pendant worn by one of the main characters, Liko. In the two-part debut, the mystery deepened when the pendant activated, transforming into a never-before-seen Pokemon that the English Twitter account again highlighted, taking the wind out of the sails of what was supposed to be a really cool and exciting surprise.
Tumblr media
At the time of me writing this, not only is there no news about when HZ will be officially available for a western audience, but the JN dub still hasn't even finished yet, and likely won't until Netflix decides it's time to drop the final batch of episodes in a few months.
And the weirdest part of all this? From the way they've been treating HZ, it feels to me like they want to bring the Japanese and English sides of the anime closer together, and maybe Netflix fucking up the release schedule beyond recognition ruined their plans. Both of the Twitter incidents show implicit recognition that there is a portion of the English audience following the Japanese release. And when they announced that Ash would be leaving the anime and HZ would take his place, they did so through a video with Japanese audio and official English subtitles, with a later HZ trailer even specifically mentioning the Japanese release date (both of these videos releasing on the English YouTube channel, mind you). Most of the HZ cast have names that remain the same or only slightly changed between languages (highly unusual for this series), even extending to side characters like Anne or Alec. So now we're stuck in this weird limbo situation where the anime feels like it's trying to be more accessible to the West, while in reality being the most disconnected it's ever been. I'm super curious to see if/how the HZ dub will try to amend this issue whenever it inevitably comes out, and where the marketing goes from here. HZ has me more excited about the future of the anime than JN ever did, and I truly hope the dub can live up to it.
I don't remember exactly what the point I was trying to make at the start of this is. Just please fix this shitty distribution situation Netflix got you in, TPCi.

I saw a lot of chatter here while it was airing and it is finally all out, so here is a not so serious but absolutely heartfelt review of
My dear Gangster Oppa
I will preface this by saying that I did not like the romance in this one. Yes, that is an odd thing to say about a BL. But there was a bit too much stumbling, "You are always thinking about THAT", and breaking up for your own good for my liking.
Having said that, I have to say that this show has everything. By that I mean a bonkers plot. I would say KinnPorsche bonkers, not Kiseki:Dear to me bonkers, but that is still a lot of bonkers. What shows do you know that combine gang life and revenge, restaurants, university love triangles and star crossed lovers? Oh, and let's not forget all the eSports. If you know a show let me know, but I would be stumped.
Beyond the plot, I loved Tew's extremly well cut trousers and (to add to the trans guy clichee) all of Tul's wonderfully patterned shirts (bonus points for the guy who sells the restaurant, because that shirt is chefs kiss). All the wonderful looking food and community. Wonderfully stupid gangsters. And there is no chance in hell that Tom, Pai and Muffin are not in a polycule.
With 8 episodes it is easily bingable. Not sure if I would have stuck with it from week to week, but like this is was an excellent palate cleanser for me. If you like a fast paced story with beautiful scenes and cutesy romance, this one might be for you too.

ngl i read halcyon in like 4 days I was hooked on it 😭 if it was a book you were selling I’d buy it fr. your writing is amazing and really pulls you into the world ! and a lot of things I see with series that people write is that “y/n” is made unlikeable to a point where the redemption does nothing or it ruins the vibe, but that didn’t happen at all w yours. There were times I don’t like what she did but the writing makes me understand her actions. just omg it’s so good. just wanted to let u know💗
YESS I LOVE A GOOD BINGABLE SERIES
i’m glad that you liked it!! i promise this new version is going to be sooo much better!! i hope you stick around 🫶

Your blog has got me interested about aftg. Is it a good read? I'm looking for any recs coz I don't have school rn. Thanks!
It's such a good read! I really love it.
Some things to know before going in:
There's a lot of trigger warnings, Google the list if you're worried about it because there are significant ones
The beginning of the first book introduces a lot of characters at once, I suggest googling fanart ahead of time and referencing them to help keep track of who is who
Read it when you have time to really binge it. Like. Seriously. Once you get to the second book, you won't want to do anything else. Summer is a great time to do it because I've had friends who read it during finals week and let me tell you, they were not able to put it down to study.
Some reasons why its a great series:
SO bingable
Good fanfic and amazing fanart
Demisexual main character
Gay love story
Mafia drama (in a way that's easy to follow)
Family drama / angsty past abuse storyline
Very delightful angst (I find it a good ratio of hurt/comfort, and angst that is intriguing and garners a reaction without being too much to handle)
Twin shenanigans
Generally well developed characters
A main character who you will absolutely fall in love with and love forever
Hope this helped! Let me know if you do end up reading it, and if you want any fic recs 😍

Been working a lot remotely while I take care of my dad, but that means I’ve been binging a lot:
1. Transplant - omg, this show... such a good bingable medical drama- I love Bashir so much. Actually I love all characters.
2. Trying - I watched both seasons in one day. and then season 3 the next day. It’s British on Apple TV, so you can see some Ted Lasso hints, but man, even with the heavy topics, like infertility and infidelity - and a nice, sunshine version of adoption, but it also hits so hard on some topics like class, racism, etc it holds onto its charm... So yeah, I really do root for the main characters.
3. Maggie - It was cute and bingable. There are elements that were difficult for me personally, and I don’t know if that was the writers intent- but having a fabulous gay main character who talks dirty but never kisses anyone on screen is ... yeah, please don’t make queer characters sexless sidekicks. White woman using sage in her psychic shop... yeah. There’s also some food stuff in this show that I can’t put my finger on it.
4. The Orville... season 3 is so good, the trans storyline made me cry. I mean there’s some interesting things going on with Issac and why the doctor enjoys dates where he’s wearing a hologram, but yeah ... all in all, I think it’s fun and poignant.

Sooo, I finished How To Get Away With Murder.
Listen, it's a good show, solid ending, totally bingable and enjoyable, but I can't pretend I cared about anything other than Coliver since like.. the middle of S1.
I'm pretty satisfied with their ending. Yeah, i sure wish we'd seen more of their happy ending and maybe a liiiittle less heartwrenching angst and divorce talk in the last episode would've been great, but hell, half of the characters are dead and literally no other couple made it all the way so, you know what, I'm definitely counting myself lucky.
The fact that they were together basically from the first to the last episode is pretty damn epic. I actually can't think of another TV couple that gets together in the first ep and is endgame.
So, yeah, I'm pretty happy and the only thing I'm missing is fanfics about the gap in their life. Damn, this ship doesn't have enough fanfics.

DS9 reaction thoughts (for the first several episodes of season 6)
So, that was a pretty remarkably solid 8-episode run of DS9, starting from the season 5 finale, up through the 7th episode of season 6. All-out war, unexpected plot twists, good character drama, bookended by two weddings.
I peaked at the summary for the next episode and saw that mirror!Kira is involved, so it looks like we’re about to hit the usual mid-season slump of filler eps, maybe? But I also saw that some of the seemingly most beloved episodes are coming up later this season too, so that’s cool. (As well as one widely hated one, lol.)
I’m worried that there isn’t going to be any good on-screen follow-up addressing Odo, Rom, and Quark, and What The Fuck Happened There. It seems like Kira and Odo are already working through it, but, there were... other people involved in all of that. I hope the show doesn’t forget that.
(I hate that Odo coming to his senses was framed as being All About Kira. I just don’t like something about this romance. It’s like it’s cast Odo (or Odo’s cast himself) as like the phantom of the opera, you know? No one can love me, brood brood, meanwhile the narrative framing is clearly trying to suggest that like... Odo can be hot, women throw themselves at him, Kira will come to love him, her love will Redeem him, etc. It’s like it both aggrandizes and reduces his character at once. And meanwhile, it still has never felt like Kira has reciprocated--from her point of view, he feels like a complex, confusing friend who’s suddenly thrown a lot of really weird expectations and baggage at her. And fictional romance can be messy and dramatic and larger than life, so none of this is necessary really bad, but I just don’t really enjoy this one. All that said, the scene with Dax going to bed after her party and then finding Odo and Kira chatting in the closet, apparently having been hashing things out the entire night and not realizing it was morning... was cute, ok.)
Um, other things:
I really liked teenage (in Klingon years?? but 8-year-old?) Alexander. The episode which introduced him was a bit slow, but he himself was charming and adorable, and even more so in the next episode.
Speaking of adorable teenagers just doing their best... Nog! Becoming an ensign! Going through all these battles and secret missions! Being brave and competent and still funny!
ROM! Being a hero. (Look, at part of me unfairly has kind of resented Rom for like... getting retconned as The Nice And Progressive Brother and getting a character arc and stuff, when Quark does not, which I know is crazy of me. But, he has been winning me over for a long time, of course. He’s just a good dude.)
Quark ALSO getting to be a hero and vindicating my conviction that he’s the kind of person who, with much handwringing, will ultimately come through for his friends when everything is really on the line.
Also Quark getting drunk with Damar was pretty fun, as well as, you know, good and brave. (Idk why his impression of Rom was so funny (“Uh, he doesn’t know”), but it was. Just, perfect comedic delivery.)
Also Quark repeatedly suggesting that they find a way to reach out to Odo for help when Kira is like, “No, you don’t get it. He does. not. care.”  :( :( :(
The Vorta are pretty delightful
Dukat creepily playing with Sisko’s baseball all the time :/ I love that they’ve made him such a sleazy shitbag and just fully embraced it
Ziyal! :(
The Jem Hadar! :( That suicide charge in “Rocks and Shoals”? The Jem Hadar are just so... tragic? Every episode that really involves them as characters just drives that home
That Vedek suicide protest!! what a dark moment for Star Trek, wow
Also, not at all on that level, but thinking of “What, on Star Trek?!” moments, Martok’s wife called Jadzia a slut. Just, straight-up called her a slut. lmao yeeeesh.
A part of me really likes the idea of Worf and Jadzia, but I’m also like... Jadzia shouldn’t have to get married? Jadzia should keep feeling free to throw parties and dance with fire dancers? It’s hard to forgive Worf for the terrible characterization of that Risa episode still, god.
Um, Miles and Julian reciting “The Charger of the Light Brigade” together and the continual reminders of all their off-screen holosuite adventures together was nice. Also liked them suffering through Worf’s bachelor party together.
Odo’s fucked traitorous turn was upsetting, but I kind of knew about it in advance, so I wasn’t shocked, but I was distressed. It was good though. I like how the link is described. I mean, it would really fuck up anybody to temporarily like... fully merge identities and consciousness with somebody else, especially somebody who claims to love you and be your heritage and family and self and future, etc. (And I think the founder even means all that too. They’re manipulating him, but they believe what they’re telling him too.) So, on the one hand, I can understand and forgive him, but on the other hand, I hope he isn’t just let off the hook by everyone for that because... that was fucked up, man. Don’t do heroine.
I did not see that wormhole prophet miracle coming, but it was powerful and so was the moment before it. Did not see the minefield grid coming down. etc. That was a lot of well-written suspenseful, exciting writing. I guess this stretch is part of what makes people say that DS9 was ahead of its time and a real deviation for Star Trek for having an ongoing, serialized story. That felt like a modern bingable sci-fi adventure, you know? I hope it picks up like that again. Not that I don’t also love the quintessentially Star Trek shenanigans episodes too, and they definitely have their place in the mix that makes DS9 so good and enjoyable. (And episode 7 was basically that. So was the episode right before this story-arc, with Jake and Nog trying to get that baseball card from the dude who kept talking about the soulless minions of orthodoxy--all very fun and good.

Quick Drama Thoughts - So... yeah
Hello my peeps!
Been neglecting this for a LONG LONG WHILE
Sorry, it is what it is.
I rewatched a few things - Cinderella and Four Knights for a mindless re-watch of something quite, and I started re-watching My ID is Gangnam Beauty because I really liked it.
Tumblr media
Other things? sadly, I did finish TharnType and even bought the extra episode because it felt like a good way to support the series - and really, they went out of their way to give official links to international fans to watch.
And I’m looking forward to the next part of the story, which I think its coming out this year.
I also started watching Until We Meet Again, but I’m kinda bored by the past storyline, so I’m stuck around episode 10, but the episodes are short so I’ll probably finish it soon.
The only two things I have finished are The Untamed, which I re-estarted earlier in the year and finished in a bout a week.
And The Untamed was excellent (my constant reblogging of Untamed Content might have tipped you off), it was such a great constructed series - had its flaws here and there but I also loved it to pieces and it was full of wonderful young actors I look forward to catch more of their work.
Tumblr media
And When the Weather is Nice - which by the way, Only because I love me some Park Min Young did I watch. I didn’t like it, I wasn’t interested by it, but every week I found myself watching it to pass the time - I think because it was around the time the you know what started hitting my country and it was something to watch to keep my mind off things.
It did amaze me just how much they let inner monologue and straight up silence carry the mood of it. It was beautifully shot and it had it’s okay points, the book club and the aunt story line. I wasn’t WOWed by the main couple (and we are talking Park Min Young here, who can have chemistry with everyone) but it was okay,
I won’t re-watch but it was interesting and, like I said, kept my mind off things for a while.
Tumblr media
Other than that... I AM watching Gank Your Heart but I sort of self-sabotaged myself there because I was watching like 5 or 6 episodes a day for a while there and then I thought “What if I get bored the more quarantine goes on and I run out of things to watch?” (joke’s on my right, because back then it was supposed to be just for a month.
So, I’m 10 episodes away from the ending, and I’ll pick it up again soon, I’m sure. It’s a lovely, young series about young people starting their career and it’s sweet. And it has baby Wang Yibo.
I did watch the first episode of King: the Eternal Monarch but I haven’t been back, and I do plan to finish a few other dramas and maybe pick up some of the other stuff hat’s been showing up on netflix. Also try out the new Lee Joon Gi drama because I am Bobo the Fool and I love the man.
Uh, and I did watch Good Omens which was AMAZING and Highly recommend it!
Tumblr media
Like one of the best love stories ever told? Maybe so. YES!
And I also watched Never Have I Ever, which is so bingable.
And maybe I’ll finally finish Orphan Black.
Now, I’m off to attempt to make a loaf of bread

P.S. We live in scary times. Stay safe and be careful. Stay alert not anxious and let’s take care of each other.

hi there 🖐🏼 what are your recs for bl movies with great acting?
BL Movies with GREAT Acting
Specifically Movies? Do KBLs that were cut into movies count? Hum, I'm gonna make a judgement call given how few actual movies I have to work with and say if it holds as a "movie going experience" I can count it. I should say in order to really push this into the superlative acting space the BL aspect on many of these is... light.
Tumblr media
His
Japan 2020 Viki
His is about being a grown adult and still struggling with coming out as gay. It addresses the consequences of life choices disingenuous to identity. Nagisa turns up on Shun’s doorstep with his precocious daughter in tow. This is a touch confusing to Shun since they were each others first love and ended badly. Shun has retreated from society, rejecting the world before it can reject him, already brokenhearted because without Nagisa he never had a reason to fight. Nagisa went the opposite way, tried to pretend to be something he was not and ended up with a daughter he adores and a wife who hates him. The acting is killer, Miyazawa Hio is sulky in the best possible way, the filming is beautiful and the setting unique and interesting...
I'm not wild about the ending. Moody arthouse smackdoodle is going to pretend that "ambiguous" is somehow unique and special rather than bog standard commonplace for narratives of this type. But endings are my hangup, not yours?
This is not really BL (the prequel was), so few of the tropes are used. You do not need to have watched the prequel.
Tumblr media
Your Name Engraved Herein
Taiwan 2020 Netflix
This movie is fantastic but it is also seriously depressing. It’s a self acceptance journey that goes emotionally array on the alter of history, but if you wanna wallow in high quality acting and serious gay drama, this’ll do it. I would say it's not really BL, no real trope drops at all.
Okay those two I chose more on the strength of the acting than BL. These others are not going to be at the same standard/style.
If you want moee of the above level of drama, things get very sad in the BL world, so Love of Siam, Dew, Eternal Yesterday, Goodbye Mother, etc...
Tumblr media
Restart After Come Back Home (Risutato wa tadaima no ato de)
Japan 2020 Gaga?
Atmospheric study in rural Japan meets complex family dynamics built on a romance framework of city boy meets country boy, grumpy/sunshine. It’s beautiful and icy sweet. Slow moving in places but ultimately worth the patience, low heat, low angst, and stunning. The acting is a touch stiff, in that Japanese reserved way.
This is the only BL movie, as a movie, that I could pull. There are others, I jsut don't think the acting is good enough.
So here are some highly rated short bingable series that are movie length (1.5-2.5 hours) but not really movies - BUT with killer acting. So they still might satisfy the itch. I places them in order of acting and filming quality, not my own personal preference.
Tumblr media
From Japan
Old Fashion Cupcake
Tokyo in April is...
Life: Love on the Line (director's cut)
My Beautiful Man
I Cannot Reach You
Seven Days
Tumblr media
From Taiwan
Red Balloon
We Best Love (esp part 2)
About Youth
HIStory 2: Crossing the Line
Tumblr media
From Korea
To My Star
Long Time No See
The New Employee
Where Your Eyes Linger
More like this?
I want to shout out The Eighth Sense here too. It's longer than movie length but so well acted.

i just wanted to pop by and say that ive been reading more of your fics and i love them to hell and back?? your flow of things starting relatively light hearted slowly descending more and more into a shitshow is my favorite, especially with the characters keeping a comedic approach to everything, and you think of aus and bring up angles i would have never even considered! this is just a love letter to your writing, because I think what you write is incredible
Thank you!!! I really appreciate it. I need the encouragement right now lol - I’m right at the home stretch of this monster fic and I just gotta get it DONE.
It’s my belief that plots should always get more batshit as the story goes on - start off relatively light, but amp up the tension and introduce new complications as the story goes on. I enjoy writing ‘bingable’ stories, and keeping that constant tension and constant escalation is a big part of it. Things should always be getting worse, imo :)
AUs are such a fun way to explore a) canon, but how you want canon to be going, and b) what happens to a character when you put them in a different situation. We know how character X would respond in Y situation, so let’s try situation Z. It keeps the reader guessing and it’s just a lot of fun!
Thanks for the comment!!!

Title is from T-swizzles Lover album, I’m OBSESSED
Summary: Three years ago, Kurt and Blaine went on a disaster of a date and never quite got off on the right foot. Now, just before they graduate from NYADA, there’s a national outbreak and they’re both self-quarantined in a mutual friend’s apartment.

QueenJCedes replied to your story!
Kurt bites back a dopey grin when he opens Mercedes’s snapchat message. It’s a photo of her looking dubiously at the camera, a single eyebrow pointed up, with the caption: Quarantine buddies, huh?
He snaps back a quick photo of himself, eyes rolled upwards. What can I say, he won me over.
She sends back just a message this time—
Mercedes: Yeah, clearly. Mercedes: Head over feet, Alanis style!
—and then a bitmoji of Kurt falling through the air.
Kurt: I mean… You’re not wrong Kurt: He’s sort of everything Kurt: AND a fantastic kisser
Mercedes: OMG REALLY? I was just teasing, but if this is legit, I’m so happy for you!!!
He can’t help but giggle excitedly as he types a reply.
Kurt: Yeah. me too.
*
New Snap from setroutymouth
Blaine rolls his eyes but still can't school the smile on his face into a neutral expression. This is going to be a lot, he already knows, but nevertheless, he swipes his thumb across the screen to unlock his phone.
Sam’s pacing through Mercedes’s childhood home in Ohio, phone in selfie mode, already rambling at a hundred miles a minute that Blaine’s sure he cut off a few words.
“—cedes just showed me Kurt’s snapchat story and I AM LOSING IT! Did something happen between you two? Oh my god, something totally happened, didn’t it!? BLAINE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED MERCEDES WON’T TELL ME AND I ALREADY FINISHED EVERY BINGABLE SHOW ON NETFLI—”
As expected, it was a lot. But still not enough to burst his happy little bubble. He doesn’t think anything could, at this point.
Through his smiles, he snaps back a picture of himself shrugging, trying to look as clueless as possible, and adds the caption: I have no idea what you’re talking about.
It’s not even a full moment before he gets another video back.
“BLAINE ANDERSON I AM BEGGING YOU—”
Blaine locks his phone shut, mostly because he knows it’ll drive Sam crazy. He can respond later. Right now, there are more important matters at hand.
*
Blaine’s in the kitchen, putting away what was left of the carton of Cookie Two-Step ice cream they’d demolished while watching another Netflix romcom, when Kurt’s phone lights up.
New Message: From: Adam I saw your sc story You know you could just be *my* quarantine buddy When are you coming?
Kurt actually growls as he types out a reply. How did he put up with this for nearly three years?
New Message: To: Adam I’m not.
Kurt. We both know how this ends.
Not this time. I meant it. We’re done.
Okay, whatever you say I’ll check in with you later When you change your mind
Kurt doesn’t even warrant that with a response, he’s too seething mad to even formulate one with enough bite to put Adam in his place.
But then the door opens, Blaine’s beaming at him, and Adam is completely irrelevant.
“I was just thinking,” Blaine muses aloud, slipping under the covers and snuggling up next to him in a way that Kurt knows will be way too easy for him to get used to. “Do you remember our Junior year when we had to partner up during Stagefighting for that Musical Choregraphy project?”
Kurt explodes into laughter. “Uh, yeah, that was pretty ridiculous. I remember hearing from Matthew that you said I dance like a pigeon that’d been chewed up and spit out by a cat.”
“What!?” Blaine exclaims, shocked. “I swear I never said that. Though, I do remember going on a tangent about how I didn’t know how I was supposed to concentrate when you insisted on wearing those pants with that tight fitted shirt and…”
He trails off, and Kurt can feel color rising to his cheeks. “Oh, that explains it, actually.”
“Explains what?”
“Matthew. He had a huge crush on you.”
Blaine’s eyes double in size. “He what!?”
Kurt lets out a chuckle. “You seriously didn’t know?”
“No! Nobody told me!”
“That’s not how crushes work, Blaine,” Kurt says through a stream of giggles.
“Okay, why does it make more sense for me to just take a wild guess about how people feel about me instead of them telling me, or acting on it? Like, if you hadn’t have kissed me earlier, I would have never known how you felt and kissed you back.”
Kurt opens his mouth to argue that logic, but… he seriously cannot get over how oblivious Blaine is. “So you’re saying that if I hadn't accidentally kissed you then you really wouldn’t have known how I feel?”
“Yeah. And I would most definitely not have acted on my crush.”
“Aw,” Kurt teases. “You used to have a crush on me. That’s embarrassing.”
“And you watch too much Parks and Rec.”
“I’m gonna kiss you again, now,” he announces.
Blaine just grins, eyes crinkling at the sides. “I think that’s a great idea.”
There wasn’t much of a choice because of the shelter in place, but based on the bright spark forming in his chest when their skin meets, Kurt could definitely get used to this living situation.
*
Blaine finally pulls away reluctantly. If he could stay attached to Kurt forever, stay connected to him, he would. He roams his eyes over Kurt’s face, like he could memorize it if he really, really tried, and notices a scar just above his eyebrow. It would be invisible to anyone else, anyone who wasn’t trying to intentionally map out the image of Kurt.
The scar doesn’t bother Blaine, but the idea that someone ever hurt Kurt bad enough to leave physical evidence that refuses to leave tugs achingly at his heart. Instinctively, he takes his hand from where it rests on the side of Kurt’s face, and gently traces over the scar with the pad of his index finger soothingly, as if it hasn’t been healed for years.
“Sophomore year… two years ago,” Kurt’s murmuring refocuses his attention.
That was a hazy time for Blaine, but he does have a vague memory of hearing from a friend of a friend that Kurt spent some time in the hospital, and he definitely remembers his rival-slash-partner being missing from their stage acting class for a while.
“What happened?” He asks.
Kurt is so calm, so steady when he answers. It leaves him in awe. “It was when all those gay bashings were happening…” he pauses, and Blaine immediately feels sick to his stomach because he knows where this is heading. “I was on my way home from school and saw these guys attacking some teenager, and… I had to help. I ran over and started shoving them, I guess. I didn’t really know what I was doing, but the kid got away. I didn’t. The last thing I remember after that was what I think might’ve been a brick hitting my head.”
“Jesus,” Blaine breathes. His initial reaction is to say I’m sorry, but something tells him that Kurt isn’t sorry about it at all. Instead, he says, “I had no idea. That–that was really brave of you.”
Kurt snorts out a laugh. “I’m glad you think so. I spent most of my hospital stay being berated by my dad about how irresponsible it was.”
“No,” Blaine shakes his head. “If anything it was over-responsible.”
“I’m not convinced that’s a word.”
“Me neither,” Blaine says breathlessly, amber gaze fixed on the boy lying across from him.
He really just can’t help but pull them together again.
Blaine thinks Kurt is opening his mouth to deepen the kiss and, well, he’s certainly not going to complain. Until Kurt sucks in a deep breath and turns his head, chuckling through his yawn.
“Sorry, I really thought I could hold that yawn in.”
Blaine lets out a laugh of his own and glances over at the analog clock on the nightstand. “It’s only midnight, you grandpa,” he teases.
“Hey! Doing nothing all day is seriously draining.”
“I wouldn’t call what we did nothing,” Blaine says cheekily, causing Kurt to flush.
“I’m going to shower before I head to bed,” Kurt responds, sitting up and lifting his arms up over his head and exposing an inch or so of his midriff.
Blaine is trying so hard not to stare. Nevertheless, he can’t help it as he watches Kurt saunter off to the restroom.
He tosses his head back onto the pillow with a satisfied grin on his face. Global crisis it may be, but if he got Kurt Hummel out of it… he could complain about worse things.
A bright ding from his right interrupts his thoughts. Blaine turns his head and sees the screen of Kurt’s phone light up, resting there on the nightstand.
He’s not snooping. He’s really not. It’s just sort of instinct to look in the direction of the sounds.
Then, he sees the succession of messages that make his stomach churn.
New Message: From: Adam Hurry and finish up with the rebound already I miss you Text me when you’re on your way
He stares at the screen for a few seconds before it fades back to black, feeling absolutely sick to his stomach. Of course Kurt was going to run back to his ex the first chance he got. It’s exactly what he did three years ago and Blaine was just kidding himself. This was all too good to be true.
Turns out it wasn’t.
Before he knows it, he’s grabbing his duffel bag and dialing Quinn’s number.
He’s always welcomed there and New Haven isn’t all that far, after all.

Unrequited Love
How Much I Loved It: ★ ★ ★ ★
Rewatchability: ★ ★ ★
Bingeworthy: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
How Many Times I’ve watched it:  ★
Favorite Episode: season 1 Episode 12
Favorite Quote: But in love there is none. If you’ve missed it, that’s it
OTP: Luo Zhi and Sheng Huai Nan
Some of my favorite things:
It’s so fluffy!!
Tumblr media
I have no idea why, but I loved all the scenes where these big dopes end up in giant costumes to advertise for local businesses. It just kept happening, and I ate it up. Who could it be in the suit? Will they hear something they shouldn’t? Will they be found out? Oh-la-la!
Tumblr media
The boys friendships. They were so silly and close!! I loved when they were messing around in the dorms, and I teared up at the singing competition. I felt like between the boys dorm and the friendship between Luo Zhi and Jiang Baili there was a strong theme of friendship being just as important as romantic love, and I loved it.
Tumblr media
I love the miscommunication trope so much. Like, there would be maybe 5 episodes if these idiots would just talk to each other, and I love it so, so, so much. Every once in awhile I’d screech something at the scream like, “Yes she likes you, you idiot! Tell her you like her!” but mostly I just enjoyed the ride.
Tumblr media
I normally do not enjoy stories with flashbacks, it’s confusing, and it pulls me out of the narrative, but I thought this was fairly well done in this show. I liked getting to know the information right when it was about to become relevant.
I got awesome A Love So Beautiful vibes without all the cringe. Luo Zhi prides herself on her silence and not letting her love be a burden.
I love poor Zhang Mingrui, who just wants to be loved. He was adorable and perfect and so silly. Part of me wanted Luo Zhi to get sick of Sheng Huai Nan’s theatrics and fall in love with her best bud.
Tumblr media
Things I hated
The star crossed lovers storyline. Like his dad killed her dad, but she fell in love with him anyway and then just ya know, decided not to tell him until it blew up in their faces. Wtf.
I loved that they’d been in love with each other because of the windows, but I felt like it should’ve been a bigger reveal with more impact on the plot. He should’ve found out and been like, holy crap, no, you are the only one for me, I’m so sorry I was so easily fooled, please let me show you what you meant to me, here are all the things that we wrote that meant everything to me, how can you not know that I looked for you, etc. instead it was kind of like, oh. Wow. K.
Tumblr media
Jiang Baili deserves so much more than Mr Gu who was at least 30. Gross. Couldn’t we just leave her happy, single, and boy crazy?
Some of the side characters seem to have very little purpose? There’s the girl in the lab who is tired of being invisible and as far as I can tell the only reason she exists is to be the girl who broke the necklace? Which we didn’t really need? It could’ve been any random girl! Then once her story is resolved she just.... disappears.
Why couldn’t they give me a better ending? Either end it with them getting back together and then stop so we can have a second season, or get them back together earlier so we can bask in the slice of life yummy romance. I got neither! Robbed! I was robbed!
Overall I really loved this one. I was hooked, it’s very bingable. There are tons of side story lines if you get tired of the adorable drama queen mains, and it’s very very fluffy. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys cdramas, and fans of A Love So Beautiful specifically!!

Forefront : Animation in the age of streaming services.
Netflix and Amazon Prime the two major streaming companies have made a dramatic push for streaming animation shows on both of there platforms. This is mainly pushed for anime, as eastern animation is often easier and cheaper to acquire licensing, as western shows are often produced and commissioned by TV production companies like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Though this push for anime and being able to easily access these shows, it’s not the main focus of this discussion.
It’s been quite a few months since Netflix and Amazon (Los Angeles Times doing a great article on this) have both publicly announced this new push for animation and particularly their own platform exclusive shows, this including Castlevania, Big Mouth, Dead Space and even my beloved Tuca and Bertie. Though the production of children shows is becoming more and more prevalent. Shows like :
She-Ra Princess of Power (Netflix)
youtube
A wonderful rebooting of the original series, really throwing itself into it’s queer origins. Improving and developing both the animation (though can look a little ropey now and again) which has a nice anime inspired design but more importantly developing character. There is a richness to the new cast, and a lovely portrayal of diversity (though the main protagonist having a more then slight airian quality about her). There is a real passion behind this show, and a really freshness in it’s embracement of camp and LGBTQ themes. Though having a quite roughness and cheapness about it, it is still enjoyable and has improved over a the last few series.
Twelve Forever (Netflix)
youtube
Twelve Forever is a solid show, not drastically life changing but solid. Having a lovely depiction of growing up from child to teenager and openly talking about feminine issues surrounding it in a light and comical way (one episode the Mum giving the child a bra as a birthday present to her embarrassment). There is a wonderful quality of childhood in this, but also anxiety of fear for the future, fear of losing that adventure. Really odd and surreal elements with wonderful voice acting especially Matt Barry’s portrayal of Butt Witch (this sentence tells you a lot about the show).
Costume Quest (Amazon)
youtube
This is the newest creation from one of my favourite studios Frederator. It sees a handful of kids being grated magic powers to change themselves to whatever costume they are wearing, whether magician or space ranger Abraham Lincoln. It is light and funny, with a nice darker quality to it, a lot removed from Frederator’s other shows like Bee and Puppy Cat and even adventure time. There’s a wonderful graphic style with thick black lines and shadow work in this program. Though it’s not massively bingable, (mention this later), doesn’t seem to have an over arching mystery a thread through the show, but still willing to watch more.
Danger & Eggs
youtube
Danger & Eggs is very much dumb fun, super action backed, wearing it’s surreal unusualness on it’s sleeve. Very high energy, seeming to be inspired slightly by stuntmen and 90s skateboarding scene.  Lovely colour pallets that compliment the animation tone, and exceptionally fun through out. I think what real appeals to me with this one is the slightly unusual character design, linking something like Johnny Quest and mashed with Adventure Time again very much enjoyable.
The thing with these shows and the almost strength that these shows have from traditional tv programming. Is firstly they seem to be able to push the boat out when it comes to LGBT and adult themes (particularly with Netflix), this is a real strength abling to tell more complex and compelling stories, relating to both kids who are going through these confusing times but also nostalgic adults.
As well, most streaming programs are binge worthy, meaning people will watch several episodes at a time, again this is where netflix succeeds. There is always a through line and a mystery to the works, always wanting to watch the next episode. This more me is a key aspect, and something I want to (and need to) incorporate into my TV shows and pitch ideas. How can we hook audiences to watch more then one episode at a time. The issue when this doesn’t happen is that you drop off and don’t go back to, especially with amazon’s weekly updates of the episodes fails to capture the audience.
Lastly and annoyingly, the way these platforms promote these shows is somewhat poor. Netflix from my experience promotes way more of their anime and adult animations, this may of course be just through their algorithms, but it is frustrating as a user. Worst though is amazon prime, where there is almost no advertisement what’s so ever, myself only knowing about Costume Quest through Frederator and seeking it out. This is incredibly frustrating as a viewer but someone who would love to use these platforms in the future and is really failing the creatives and artists hard work on these wonderful series.
