Tavros Nitram

he uses he/him and is a cis guy (just is slightly feminine) he is mlm/gay. he loves fairycore and his favourite dog breed is a golden retriver (speficially the human version dave showed him, not alternian.) his robot legs will occasionslly malfcution, causing them to either get locked in place, squeak loudly, or get sticky joints. dave constantly has to call dirk over to fix his legs. his matesprit is dave, moirail is gamzee, and he has a black crush on gamzee (not very "black" though, mostly a "i can fix him" mentality but it ends up being "i can fix him but itll make me worse in the prossess) type stuff. its a pale leaning black thing.

Sollux Captor

he uses they/he/she and is bisexual and bigender (original i know but its kinda funny concidering my headmate with a sollux source is bisexual and bigender so im stealing that). hes emo and has a johnnie guilbert shrine in his hive he swears is ironic. he is colour blind (blue colour blindess specifically) so he sees voilet/purple as a ugly brown thats why he calls eridan ugly so much. he plays the synthesizer. hes double jointed and likes to gross his friends out with it. his shoes were orignially both white but he lost the second one but was too lazy to find it so he just wears the same brand shoe but different colours. theyre vans shoes. his matesprit is aradia , his moirail is dave , his kismesis is eridan , and his auspistice is karkat.

Karkat Vantas

he uses they/he, theyre nonbinary / transmasculine (has top scars and is technially transmasc but is also nonbinary i dont know if im saying this right) and is unlabeled for sexuality (they kiss guys but is unlabeled take with that what you will) they are punk even if they dont particualerly dress like it. their sweatpants are too big and their sweater is too small / tight so theyre a small gap of stomach showing. he purrs when happy, sleepy, or comfortable. when he gets scared their voice cracks and squeaks. when theyre alone listening to music in their hive hell jump around bouncing off stuff pretending to play the guitar and screaming / singing at the top of his lungs to the song. his matesprit is gamzee, his moirial is eridan, his kismesis is dave, and they aupistice for eridan and sollux.

Nepeta Lejion

she uses she/meow and is girlflux, catgender (original i know), grey romantic, and asexual. when she paints on her shipping wall she tends to get paint all over her and it has since stained her jacket. she has had her hat since she was very little and its very streched out and worn. same with her tail as its not part of her, it drags on the ground behind her and gets dirt, sticks and leaves caught in it most of the time. she likes to play the xylophone, read warrior cats, and play animal jam with equius. she purrs when she his happy / sleepy / comfy like karkat. her matesprit is feferi and her moirail is equius.

i think what a lot of ppl miss about the nuance when it comes to the retcon is that the POINT of it is that its a bad ending. homestuck is designed to be a tragedy and it was never going to end well; its frankly ridiculous to try and shoehorn in a scenario where none of the current main characters are dead when the story is ABOUT death. its not narratively satisfying at all like this! but thats not what the kids wanted (and, more to the point, thats not what the FANS wanted. newer fans DEFINITELY miss the fact that homestuck was written as a conversation between hussie and the fans, a conversation that turned into an argument halfway through and led to a lot of things being taken in bad faith on both sides. but i digress; this is a watsonian post)

the retcon powers are very VERY explicitly described as the ability to change the alpha timeline. the 'whats supposed to happen' of it all, the premeditated narrative the story was written to fill. conversely, when aranea used the ring of life to come back and meddle, she is explicitly described as 'causing a doomed timeline.' and like, the thing about doomed timelines is that theyre meant to happen as much as theyre meant to be fixed. theyre how paradox space accounts for and incorporates time travel, and the existence of the doomed timeline is often NECESSARY for the alpha timeline to function. thats how you get davesprite, thats how the aradiabot that brought gamzee's honkHONK code back from his crazy murder timeline contributed to doc scratch's creation, thats why every dead dave helped the alpha timeline dave figure out what to do. if vriska was meant to have never died in the first place the timeline wouldve been doomed long before game over. the ring went to the wrong person, and thats the kind of simple fix sburb was expecting to solve with some time travel to get things back on track

the ring was supposed to go to someone else. probably vriska! from the alpha timelines perspective, it wasnt that long after her confrontation with john that she really changed and grew as a character. that she became someone who deserved a second chance. imagine: john uses his retcon as normal time travel, the way sburb comprehended it through the limitations of its code. he takes the ring before aranea can, goes to the dream bubbles, and has another conversation with vriska. maybe she doesnt even really want the ring anymore, and thats exactly the kind of thing that would convince john to give it to her. and she agrees, because he tells her terezi is waiting for her. they go back, they have the final fight, and people die. maybe they dont come back. but its the group of characters who earned the ending, who we watched grow up for three years

but thats not what happened, and it was never going to be what happened, because as narratively satisfying as it could have been? john and terezi wanted something different. john wanted everything to be OVER and terezi wanted the chance to make a different choice, even if it was wrong. theyre selfish; theyre kids. theyre tired of being characters in a story, of someone else pulling their strings. thats what typheus's choice was about, you know? and john made the wrong choice. some other version of john could have fixed things the "right" way, had our john decided to die instead. to accept the consequences of the doomed timeline and let pardox space fix it. hell, between roxys first instinct to just sit and let the void take her and terezis pointy horns offering a counterpoint we have some pretty blatant devil/angel on the shoulder imagery! and john making the same wrong choice he did when terezi first told him to fly to the seventh gate, except this time there was no davesprite on angel wings, no one left alive he cared about enough to listen to. because as much as john felt like he was SUPPOSED to fall for roxy, the girl version of his fathers lover, someone strongly associated with his half of karkat's shipping chart but without the complication of being a lesbian, someone HUMAN to repopulate the world with cut out of his apocalypse movie fantasies...... terezis way of thinking has always appealed to him more. because as much as he pretends its not true, john doesnt like to take things lying down, and he doesnt like when other people do either. he gets bored! hes attracted to the danger and morally grey self confidence terezi and vriska exude, so. he listened to terezi, and they brought vriska back.... without any of the character development she had gone through.

and its a bad ending, because of course it would be. and thats the point :) it was stupid to think two kids could meddle with the fate of the universe and it was stupid to think that these kids could have a happy ending so easily. but can you really blame them?

the sbahj canon diverges. so many sbahj in-jokes exclusive to the prospitian ship. unfortunately the retcon make it so none of this ever happens :(

he’d never say it but davesprite likes it when john and jade fall asleep on him doing whatever, it makes his presence feel wanted and appreciated by the people he sacrificed his self and humanhood for good for. sorry for immediately going into davesprite but good god is he tragic. oh yeah heres more. he’s still part dave and shares the same history with john and jade that alpha timeline dave does. john gave him his shades on his 13th birthday in december 2008, he sent john the con air bunny and jade a physical copy of sbahj as furries in the mail. he is identical to alpha dave in relation to his friends before the timeline splits off. dont forget that 4/13/2009 was also his first time meeting his online friends john and jade in person, even after 4 months chronologically of sburb grinding—nearly a year with all the time shenanigans—and going back to day 1, since john and jade were dead in his timeline

daves just fucking around with alchemy and combines that ghost imprint of his brain with his ishades or whatever theyre called. uh oh! he just created sentient life trapped in his shades. thats. probably not good

the ai names himself 'Auto" (like the wall-e character) (its the only ai character either of them know and he *has* to name himself after an ai for the irony) and hes totally cool with it. yep. hes just. hes just chilling in there definitely trust him bro :thumbsup: sure it kinda sucks that literally none of their friends believe him or dave when they try to tell them that auto exists but hey its cool its fine he can pretend to be dave to talk to them. he can watch dave grow up and become a hero and live his life and do everything he cant. hes cool

after dirk decapitates himself and they end up in the game, theyre just. stuck with his head. its kinda weird. they arent really sure what to do with it, but eventually it somehow ends up in one of the kernelsprites and now dirksprite is a thing they all need to deal with. (they prototype him with a dead seagull from dirk's apartment so he doesnt accidentally fuse with anything else, so now he has the ability to just. screech. he absolutely uses that to make dirks life hell)

dirk and dirksprite fucking hate each other (because surprise surprise the guy that hates himself *also* hates having yet another splinter of himself) and the rest of the alphas arent really sure how they feel about having this weird bird dirk hanging around. theyve got plenty of time to figure that shit out though considering theyre stuck in their session for months waiting for the betas! thatll be fun and definitely not awkward

I was reading your tags to dre's published ask. Do you think while writing about these blood sucking monsters, Anne deliberately made one of them a former slave master? I mean the way this man during his mortal times had benefited by preying on the black race and the reflection of it in his fate where he is now in literal terms an entity who survives by preying on people? i dont know about twilight book or movie to make a meaningful comparison to louis’s book counterpart. i wish i knew. and tbh, its hard to prescribe authorial intent on a dead woman who wrote a sprawling epic of 20+ books for 50 years , especially with shifting perspectives , namely pivoting away from louis to lestat as her MC bc of what fantasy/POV was more interesting to her. but i think in the first book there was some intention there, i cant just say how much. lestat wants to hunt the runaway slaves along the freniere plantation, and louis discourages him from doing it not out of compassion for enslaved people (which would be condescending and abysmal writing for a slaveowning character), but for his proximity to the freniere’s as fellow planters. ive talked about it a lot how its really interesting in the first 2 books that the american planter is created both literally + vampirically by the european aristocrat.. and theyre both parasitic beings in relation to the enslaved people, eventually draining them+ burning the plantation down. iwtv early book louis is resentful of lestat in part bc he thought lestat wanted his plantation, but when he learns who lestat is + where he came from, the power and will he has. hes far more genial to him. its a very dark book, and i think the fact that these characters are so vicious + melancholic is intentional on the authors part. i dont know how much race based chattel slavery is meaningfully explored from the perspective of the slaveowner, but book louis thinking of people in his captivity as fixtures, as creepy ‘things’ more proximate to the supernatural bc of their ‘african nature’ (that had yet to be ‘trained’ out of them) is a very probable, chilling, and haunting perspective of a former slaveowner to take even a hundred and some years removed from it. or if we take it as book louis immersing himself in his perspective @ the time. either way. and its pathetic when fans try to flatten book louis into ‘he was a good slaveowner’ cuz at that point theyre just conflating the movie with the book. i kinda joke that book louis is the vampire it girl bc he was such a terrible mortal LOL. im still indeterminate on the exact mode or purpose, or how much it was just about the aesthetic of gothic horror (re: the earth’s a savage garden). especially bc later books fixate on very discrete modes and metaphors of servitude/subjugation ‘being a slave to the blood’ is a recurring motif running antiparallel with the motif of ‘purifying the african/asian/foreign’ (through ‘admixture’ with the ‘european’) (s/o poacher bro gabi + talamasca bro dave ig) and in later works, theres the cycle of slavery through marius & armand.. marius, whos mother was a slave, purchases armand. chattel slavery took inspo from the romans in the idea of maternal based slave caste inheritance.. idk. idk. ive had very long rambly convos w ppl on here in the past (& im still a bit embarrased abt it) on this, but i think the reasons why fans dont rly get into it is cuz most ppl got into these books at a young age + was just into the cool lore or the queer shit and were able to handwave things as just aesthetic/era/quirky anne things etc. idk.

Oh boy I'm about to ramble SO HARD

So first of all, her design

^well that's a solid design right there imo

Her shirt with the cute little changing icons before and her doggy ears and skirt and the little shiny bright Wizard of Oz Dorothy shoes.. her design is quite simple but it's great!

So that's it for the design now let's go on with the character per se

So! You know that she woke up on prospit when she was very young, right, so she was used to seeing the future in her dreams, and Dave and Rose were convinced that she was a seer or a witch of some sort, that she could see the future. Turns out she WAS a witch, but that's a different topic

But later, when her dream self died, she couldn't see the future in the clouds so she didn't know what she had to do to avoid a doomed timeline, so she just did whatever felt right, which was for example prototyping her dead dreamself with becsprite, which didn't turn out great at first but later gave her doggy ears and first guardian powers which if I recall correctly were important later!

Shes also SO COOL like, look at this and tell me she's not cool. I dare you

The thing she had to do to enter Sburb was also wild! They covered her eyes and gave her a piñata, so she made what was logical, which is hitting the piñata. But then it EXPLODED and threw her off the window, so she decided to shoot as a last resort. Luckily the bullet would've hit the piñata wherever she shot, because Bec was there to redirect it and she didn't get hurt because bec cushioned the fall by teleporting her to the bed iirc

It's also really sweet how there's isn't a single character who dislikes her

Like, John and Jade are brother and sister, but are also great friends. She didnt talk to rose much, which is a ROBBERY, but you can clearly see theyre good friends and care about each other so much augh <3 and then theres dave who I like to think is her moirail, like a childhood crush to moirail or something, thats how I see it at least.

Then for the trolls.. Aradia and she get along pretty well! To the point that Aradias most iconic line was kind of reused later by jade which is really cute :] there's also Nepeta, who said Jade was her favorite human, and Kanaya who helped Jade with the frog breeding! She didn't really talk to every single troll, no one did, but if she did I think she would get along with everyone, she's just so lovable <3

And this doesn't even START to cover all the good things she has! There nothing in her not to love <3

aradia assures dave that he can basically do whatever he wants. he can explore and makes friends and then we get to see tavros, still freshly dead from our perspective, show up for a fun hangout, acting friendly and looking happy. its like a gentle reassurance that "shhhh shh its okay. yes all of these beloved characters just met a grim fate but theyre gonna be okay. they get to be happy in the end. shhhhh."

Well, that kinda depends in the au! I have a couple so here's a littlle summary for each of them

Earth C AU - My main one? At least the one I tend to talk about the most lol, its basically my fanfic of how i would write the cast living on Earth C, not as deities but just, regular people hiding their status as Gods.

I tend to talk mostly about the fankids i created, Karkat as a parent, Davekat awful breakup that ends up with Dave ghosting everyone for like 6 years, here is a rough timeline i go too lazy at the end.

Crossing Timelines AU - Connected with the last one, a 40 year old Karkat gets teleported to the pesterquest timeline for reasons he doesnt know yet, where he is now stuck trying to find a way back home while spending time with the friends he lost years ago

This one has a comic and an askblog! That i try to update semi-regularly (and i fail a lot), I just updated it last week :3

Superherostuck - An AU where the Beta Kids and Trolls are both a group of superheroes. With the Beta Trolls (humans) unknowingly being with the bad guys, a corrupt company who raised them since young to be superheroes and who, after Karkat ends up being a loss because his powers arent really that useful and realize he has been a waste of money, decide to get rid of him

Karkat survives thanks to an unknown power he had, and after that he starts living with Spades Slick, who founded him and decided not to snitch his survival to the company.

While living a ''normal life'' he meet the Beta kids and realizes theyre the Other superhero team in the city, who is seen really badly in the publics eye and joins with them to try and contact his team members to tell them about the corruption of the company. Shenanigans occur

Runaway Au - Karkat disappears for 2 years and is assumed dead after they find his clothes torn by animals, the day of his funeral, the Beta Trolls (humans) decide to go to the old abandoned cabin they used to frecuent when they we're kids to leave some food to honour Karkat.

They end up finding Karkat, and also an alien egg, and Karkat sharing bodies with an Alien who almost kills them. Fun stuff, need to draw more of them

Magical Girl au - Feferi is a princess of another planet who has to run away with her team to Earth because her evil Mother is trying to destroy her and conquer all the galaxy. The only way to stop her is to reunite the 6 missing members of The Protectors of the Universe

Sadly when trying to escape, she and her members got separated, so now Feferi is all on her own until a kind (lol) stranger helps her! This stranger ends up being one of the missing protectors and he ends up activating his powers for the first time!!!! This stranger is not amused at all

The Alpha Trolls are not unprecedented in their function. What we learn about in canon is the story of that particular iteration of the Alpha Trolls, just like how the Beta Kids/Trolls we learn about are simply that particular iteration of the Beta Kids/Trolls.

You know how Homestuck textually has a limitless canon with infinite possibilities due to the existence of multiple concurrent timelines with equal validity? It's the exact same case with the Dream Bubbles. The only tangible difference is that Dream Bubbles are a death state, while the concurrent timelines aren't. There's multiple concurrent Dream Bubbles, just as there are multiple concurrent timelines. All of equal value, just with different stories. The iteration of the Alpha Trolls that we learn about are as valid as the iteration(s) of the Beta Kids/Trolls that we learn about. They're as valid as Davesprite's existence as a Dave is. Sometimes the Dream Bubbles intersect, and sometimes existences overlap, but the same can be said about the timelines. The Beta Kids/Trolls we start with are not any more or less valid than the Retcon Beta Kids/Trolls.

So, I guess to answer your question more directly... It's technically not any more or less valuable. It's the same level of value, it's just that those Alpha Trolls are the ones we meet and learn about, and therefore, that's the instance of them that we are meant to really care about and focus on. Those are "our" Alpha Trolls, so to speak. This is how it works with the SBURB/SGRUB sessions we learn about. Infinite timelines, infinite possibilities, infinite stories. Infinite Dream Bubbles, infinite possibilities, infinite stories. It's just that the ones we get to look at are our limited scope into a random instance of existence, and we're meant to care about those the most, because those are the ones we can see.

All of these people are valid instances of those characters! Vive la résistance!

How's Dave Lee??? (This is the most important and serious question)

Ruth for the most part looks... ill, as a zombie she's got terrible dark circles and sunken in cheeks. She's lost a lot of color in her face, to compensate for the dead look she wears a lot of makeup when she goes out, also wearing long sleeves and gloves to hide the discoloration in her hands and the stitching on her arm. The only other noticeable thing is her eyes, theyre slightly glazed over, it got worse over time, so current day she wears contacts. Well, theres also her teeth, zombies in this have slightly jagged sharp teeth, she just makes a point not to show them off too much.

They realized Ruth was a zombie first! She started to zone out a lot, she was forgetting things like eating and blinking. realizing her heart stopped... When her arm fell off the first time she had a MASSIVE panicked freakout. Funny enough, both thought only Ruth was a monster, then Thatcher started feeling sick, and it got worse, but he ignored it, after all, HE would be fine, Ruth was the one who needed to be worried about. But then one night when the two were heading home, suddenly the pain was unbearable, and all Ruth can do is watch her friend in agony when the werewolf curse fully kicks in. whole fiasco took about a month and a half to find out what happened to them

As for Dave... well, poor guy does get prophetic visions, lets hope they aren't... too upsetting

saw a comment on a youtube video about how the time aspect wore dave down and a DIFFERENT comment on a DIFFERENT song about how hes giving up time travel good (which i did not read before having him give it up i swear. i feel vindicated) and someone linked the page / read through that a little

so supposedly the beta session lasted a day but dave played at least three days going through time loops, and thats just the alpha dave, not counting all the ones that died or were doomed

i think it works as a parallel for his anxiety and tendency to overthink, probably leaning into some obsessive compulsive issues

like i think that's how his brain worked. he's able to throw out paragraphs of rambling because the spigot from which his stream of conscious flows is smashed permanently open so he's always in his head, distracted, thinking of things to say and possibilities and fears and doubts. running through it in his mind trying to give himself the best chance at success to overcompensate for his deep, deep, deep insecurity it's not the dead part of the dave that scares him. he's used to dead things (in jars) it's the failed part.

(someone remind me to talk about the parallels between his time aspect and interest in wet specimens later)

having to weigh all those decisions and outcomes and decide which ones were more favorable really took a toll on him. like letting jade shoot him (he wasnt afraid of his death he was afraid of jade being hurt)(having to leave his sister behind alone in a doomed timeline to save her in another.)

it's too much knowledge and executive power. the human brain is not built to experience life that way (which is why caliborn makes such a potent lord of time - his brain IS wired to work that way - vicious and cyclical)(whereas for aradia it was like a second chance that was genuinely hers and not taken from her or controlled by a weird horny freak)

i think the moment he gives it up is the moment he realizes he can do more for everyone just being present in the moment. both in terms of time and his maladaptive daydreaming. or his internal panicked searches for the Correct thing to say which is also Very Cool and Funny (which he'll never fully give up but he can learn to say something beautiful and true or even cringy and silly once in a while)

i think it also contributes to his deep unabiding love for his brother because he knows dirk is weighing all the options too. he knows none of them seem great or possible. he knows they're gods who are going to live to see black holes die. he knows that on the graph of the timeline between the birth of the universe and the death of the final black hole, he hasn't moved a nanometer. theyre not even babies theyre zygotes.

the cruxite egg was such a good metaphor because itll hatch when its ready. it takes time. let it do what it does.

davebot experiences all points in time simultaneously so where we would see a moment, followed by a moment, followed by another moment, it's like he has the whole picture in his head from start to finish and enough quiet time to ponder it all and he's cheerfully nihilistic. assigning "good" and "bad" to any moment is pointless because you stretch out the whole tapestry and it's beautiful. you can't just cut out the upsetting parts. find beauty in the threads and the hands that wove them
