Disney 1994: Tries to copyright the phrase Hakuna Matata. The people to whom Swahili is their native language rightfully calls them out.
Disney 2017: Tries to copyright Dia de los Muertos, a Mexican religious holiday. They get called out on their bullshit pretty damn fast and cease on their attempt.
Disney 2021: They now want to copyright an ancient Norse pagan deity. (READ BELOW)
Tumblr media
EDIT: Apparently the Norse deity thing was misinformation: Thankfully it seems they are only trademarking the fictional Marvel versions of them. The other shit they did is still real, though. Don’t ever forget they tried to do that.

im going insane like im the last person to defend disney corp but stop spreading the misinfo abt it. theyre copyrighting the characters from the comics, not the gods themselves. the situation started with redbubble preemptively taking down someone’s product anyway, not disney. misinformation is the wrong way to go about change.

Disney are garbage!
there’s people that seriously don’t understand my hatred of Disney, but let me just bring up a few things.
Disney has owned the trademark for the Swahili phrase “Hakuna Matata” since 2003.
Disney applies to trademark the phrase “Dia de los muertos” (May 7th, 2013)
Marvel CEO donates 1 million to Trump fundraiser (January 29th, 2016)
Disney denies father’s request of putting spiderman onto his son’s gravestone (July 6th, 2019)
Disney tries to stop female workers from joining together for pay bias lawsuit (October 21, 2019)
Disney copyright strikes use of baby yoda gifs (Nov 25th, 2019)
Disney Sued by Labor Union for Failing to Pay Living Wage: Employees Have to ‘Live in Their Cars’ (Dec 11, 2019)
Disney lays off 28,000 people from their parks business (September 29th, 2020)
Disney blames mass layoffs on COVID restrictions (Sep 29th, 2020)
Disney fires man for taking paternity leave  (Oct 24th, 2020)
Disneyland and other theme parks exploring options to sue the state of California to be able to re-open in the middle of a pandemic (Oct 22, 2020)
Disney World lays off 720 performers at Orlando Theme Park (Oct 28th 2020)
Disney refuses to pay royalties owed to novel writer (Nov 20th, 2020)
And that’s just the stuff I found through some light searching online, to say nothing off experiences of workers, the fact that they gobble up studios like it’s going out of style or their lobbying work for things like the Mickey Mouse Protection Act of 1998
They are not good as a company, they are not friendly, they are a scummy business and therefore pirating Disney+ content is morally right!

What are your thoughts on disney adults?
I don't have anything against adults having "childish" interests, but I personally couldn't support Disney the CORPORATION.
Remember when they tried copyrighting dia de los muertos?? As in, the HOLIDAY??? They tried copyrighting a holiday that has massive cultural significance to Latinos, mainly Mexicans, so they could sell dia de los muertos merch after the release of Coco.

if disney tries to copyright or capitalize from anything about colombian culture after Encanto the way they did with Dia de los Muertos after Coco, i might just personally beat up their CEO /j (but seriously i will be extremely angry)

Did you hear about how they tried to copyright Loki, not just the MCU Loki, the straight up *norse god*, and not only him, Thor, Odin, etc. They’re trying to copyright the fucking Norse deities, *theyre sending cease and desist emails to people selling religious Loki candles on Amazon and Ebay*
yeah i did its so stupid
there is (or there was) a petition against it!!
marvel/disney is ridiculous tbh. especially since like?? the characters in the mcu are vastly different than the aesir and other norse gods are in mythology??
norse gods are literally still worshipped too??? theyre not just characters for a lot of ppl, they're literally deities.
imagine if like. andrew lloyd webber, who made the jesus christ superstar musical, tried to copyright jesus christ and/or the new testament🧍‍♂️like huh? i don't think you can do that.
unfortunately they've tried to do something like this before, where they attempted to copyright "dia de los muertos" for the movie coco. they tried to copyright. a whole celebration and tradition. and i even believe that they have/or tried to trademark "hakuna matata" which is an actual swahili saying from east africa.
so they do have a track record for this kind of stuff
i just think disney and marvel have really just gotten so big to the point that they think they can trademark everything, even stuff that they didn't make.
tl;dr - disney is a greedy mega-corporation who tries to copyright and trademark anything they can so they can make more money

is. is disney really trying to copyright mythological figures??? i'm just sitting here, trying to figure out how that would even work what the hell.
that's like trying to copyright zeus from greek mythology, you can't?? do that???
oh they don't care about that
they've tried copyrighting dia de los muertos ahead of coco's release, they've copyrighted hakuna matata - a swahilian phrase, and they've to copyright norse deities like loki, odin, thor, and heimdal since 2019
