Eldred’s, East Dennis, Massachusetts

Rising interest in American furniture drove Eldred’s November 19 and 20, 2020, auction. Many of the lots came from New England collections and estates. One of those collections was that of Richard I. M. Kelton (1929-2019), a collector extraordinaire. Kelton’s collection has been sold at auctions across the globe. Christie’s has mounted four sales (two in London and two in New York City); Oceanic and tribal works were sold at Clars Auction gallery; African, Oceanic, and pre-Columbian art was sold at Bonhams; and maritime art and artifacts were offered this past summer at Eldred’s and again in this sale. More lots from the Kelton collection will be offered in future sales.
Tumblr media
Other collections of interest were that of Carl and Mary Breyer of West Springfield, Massachusetts, and a Provincetown estate that included a selection of art by Maurice Sendak.
When The Cabbage Patch, Bermuda by Edwin Ambrose Webster (1869-1935), a 34' x 24½' (sight size) oil on canvas, sold at Eldred’s in 2009, it was unsigned and in its original frame. The frame was subsequently removed as was a label indicating that the painting was titled Cabbage Patch. It ended up in the care of scholar Dr. John Driscoll (1949-2020) of Driscoll Babcock Galleries, New York City, which handled much of the artist’s estate. The painting was exhibited in 2016 and given an estate-signed and authorized stamped signature. Driscoll thought the picture was a lost work depicting Jamaica that had been exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show. From a Cape Cod estate and estimated at $15,000/20,000, the painting went for $45,000.
The auction’s top lot was The Cabbage Patch, Bermuda by Edwin Ambrose Webster (1869-1935). When the oil on canvas had sold previously at Eldred’s in 2009, it was unsigned and in its original frame. Wedding Dance by Ralph E. Cahoon Jr. (1910-1982), a 25½' x 38' (sight size) scene in oil on masonite, has a lot going on outside a shoreside teahouse with American ships and Chinese junks nearby. There are three sailors, one at rest on the deck and two dancing, four women, and two mermaids flying kites, one in the form of an eagle and the other a bat. The painting, signed “R. Cahoon,” came from a New England collection and had been acquired in Boston, likely at Vose Galleries, in the mid-1960s. It sold for $37,500 (est. $30,000/50,000).
Newburyport shelf clock by David Wood (1766-1855) in mahogany, birch, and satinwood veneers, with three plinths on the bonnet, two with brass urn-form finials and the central one topped by a brass spread-wing eagle. An ebonized sawtooth border is on the edge of the dial door, and birch veneer, geometric bandings, and inlaid swirls decorate the lower portion of the case. The dial is signed faintly “David Wood Newbury Port.” From a New England collection, the clock brought $20,000 (est. $8000/12,000).

This rare half-hull model of the clipper ship Staffordshire by Donald McKay Shipbuilders, East Boston, Massachusetts, circa 1851, was built up in 24 lifts. The keel, the rudder, and the bowsprit were applied. Its provenance includes Samuel L. Lowe of Boston, Albert Goodhue Jr. of Boston, and Hyland Granby Antiques, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, from whom collector Richard I. M. Kelton had acquired it. Estimated at $3000/5000, the half-hull sold for $10,000.
The Massachusetts Chippendale mahogany serpentine bureau, circa 1780, with four graduated drawers and original brasses realized $8750 (est. $4000/6000). From the Carl and Mary Breyer estate, the bureau had been acquired in 1979 from Brimfield Antiques, Brimfield, Massachusetts, and was offered with the original sales receipt and copies of newspaper clippings describing the sales of similar chests.
This early 19th-century Simon Willard patent banjo clock in a mahogany case with its original reverse-painted throat and door glass in white, salmon, and gilt came from a New England collection. This Aaron Willard mahogany tall-case clock, circa 1800, with grain mahogany veneer on the paneled pendulum door is signed “Aaron Willard” on the painted dial. The moon-phase dial is decorated with a ship. Estimated at $10,000/15,000, the clock realized $16,250.
The Chippendale bonnet-top secretary in rich cherry, made in north coastal Connecticut and dating from 1780, bears the characteristics of fine Newport construction, with three plinths supporting spiral finials and arched raised panels. Estimated at $3000/5000, the secretary represented a stunning buy for the bidder who paid only $2000 for it.
Red Dory, a sweeping view of a dory on the sand by Anne Packard, brought $20,000 (est. $20,000/30,000). The 48' x 72' (sight size) oil on canvas is signed by the artist and hangs in a Guido frame.
Red Dory at Dock, a 60' x 36' (sight size) oil on canvas by Provincetown artist Anne Packard (b. 1933), realized $17,500 (est. $10,000/15,000). It is signed and dated 2002.
This rare diminutive Portsmouth Federal mahogany server with flame satinwood drawer fronts was attributed to Judkins and Senter, circa 1810. It came from the collection of important New Hampshire furniture gathered carefully by Lawrence and Dorothy Perkins. Only seven or eight other examples are known, and they are in museum collections. A similar example is illustrated in Portsmouth Furniture: Masterworks from the New Hampshire Seacoast (1993), edited by Brock Jobe. The server sold for $15,000 (est. $10,000/20,000). It had been offered in Eldred’s July 2020 auction but did not sell.
After Church, Provincetown by Iowa-born Provincetown artist Ross Embrose Moffett (1888-1971) sold for $27,500 (est. $15,000/20,000). The 39½' x 49½' (sight size) oil on canvas was published in Cape Cod Gardens and Houses (1994) by Catherine Fallin and Taylor Lewis. The artist was a founder of the Provincetown Art Association and prominent in the town. The painting came from the same Provincetown estate that provided a cache of Maurice Sendak ephemera.
Five framed sketched greetings inscribed by Maurice Sendak (1928-2012), circa 1970, from a Provincetown estate brought $10,000 (est. $2000/3000). The consignor had published Sendak’s work.
The 19th-century Canadian carved figure of a winged angel, 9' x 29', wears a flowing gown and holds a bunch of grapes. From a Provincetown estate, it was said to have been part of a side panel on a hearse. It sold for $5625 (est. $150/250).
This 48' long salesman’s sample of an Old Town canoe, circa 1915, in green-painted canvas on a wood frame, with “Old Town Canoe” on both sides in yellow lettering with red and white highlights, retains the original labels on both sides. Estimated at $10,000/15,000, the canoe brought $11,250.
This early 19th-century mahogany and mahogany veneer lady’s writing desk was attributed to Duncan Phyfe. It has a canted arrangement of shelves with pierced galleries, an adjustable writing slant, delicate hairy-paw front legs, and turned and tapered back legs. Estimated at $1500/2500, the desk brought $5000.

One doesn’t often see giraffes on Cape Cod, but Eldred’s brought an impressive bronze pair to auction. One is 92' tall, and the other is 78'. They had been part of a Hollywood collection and came most recently from a Provincetown collection. Estimated at $10,000/12,000, the pair fetched $10,000.

Global Waste-to-Energy Market By Manufacturers, Types, Regions and Application and Forecast 2021 to 2030
The Global Waste-to-Energy Market was valued at US$ XX Mn in 2016 and is expected to reach US$ XX Mn by 2022 growing at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period. With the ever growing population, and the modern lifestyle of the urbanized cities, the level of waste generated globally is going higher day by day. So, there is a concentrated focus on the management of these wastes. Initially, there was a huge reliance on landfills as a waste management strategy. But with awareness, land filling has become more and more expensive and restricted. To find an alternative to this, the focus was on waste incineration. But, with time and advancement in technology, the focus shifted on new cost effective and sustainable technology platforms, in the form of Waste-to-Energy (WtE). Waste-to-energy processes are based on combustion technologies and are highly efficient. Power plants consume the solid waste as their fuel instead of oil, coal or natural gas.\

Waste incineration is being implemented by several governments as a waste management approach. But incineration poses several challenges, and a loss of opportunity of waste being a source of energy. This is leading to the emergence of WtE market that is more environmental friendly and cost effective. The waste management industry is changing its landscape radically.WtE has already gained the status as an important component of integrated waste management strategies, across the globe. Both political and environmental attention is turning towards the development of cost effective and sustainable solutions to this problem.
The ever increasing population, rapid urbanization leading to the generation of great amount of waste, and shortage of landfill spaces along with the high ecological standards drivethe growth of this market globally. Today, even the municipalities from all over the world are implementingWtE plants to take care of the mounting waste being generated.
Restraints and Challenges
Despite being the most efficient method of waste management, it demands high infrastructure and installation costs. This can limit the growth of the market. Apart from this, there have been health concerns because of the emissions from the thermal WtE process. Also, the lack of awareness regarding the benefits of WtE, especially in the developing countries, can be a major challenge for the industry. Opportunities The recent trends show that there is a growth of recycling industry across various developed economies such as U.S., Germany, The Netherlands and Japan. This is expected to drive the WtE projects in the near future.

I don’t say this to shame anyone but I think sometimes when a player gets really popular on here like with Marner people have a hard time realizing when they’re not doing a great job playing hockey. It’s like you said, Marner was bad in the playoffs and a lot of fans want him gone or expect he will be gone next season but I think people on Tumblr and parts of Twitter would be shocked if that happens. It kind of reminds me of when Tyson Barrie was traded by the avalanche. People here lost it but Barrie was never that great a player, fans on tumblr just liked him as a person. I think when a player becomes popular on social media people can sometimes stop seeing them as a real hockey player that might perform poorly or get traded or choose to play somewhere else for more money or whatever.
Yeah I get exactly where you are coming from. I personally wouldn't go so far to say that Mitch isn't that good, I think he is very good the unfortunate part is the way the NHL is set up, the regular season just, isn't that important. Tyson Barrie was very memeable and very likable, so he got big and was given the benefit of the doubt because of that. I think that extended outside of Tumblr too, but then when he got on the Leafs there was this like negative side to the whole thing. People started to see what he was like when he wasn't so likable, because he didn't like being on the leafs. I think he had every reason to not like it, if the rumors about Babcock and stuff are true, but I think he fell from grace for a lot of people because the things that made him so likable and memeable sort of stopped. Not to say people don't still lvoe him, but it's not around as much.
With marner it's like. :/ I get seeing him and loving him and getting really frustrated with the way people are talking about him especially if you love him. But I also hate like invalidating how angry Leafs fans are right now. Yeah it's not that serious, it's sports, etc etc. BUT Leafs fans have every right to be angry. AS much as it's funny to me and others, like, it's infuriating for the fans. At some point we have to admit that like, the players are there to win and when they don't, it's okay to be upset about it.
Usually I think social media and fans in general are content to blame the GM and coach over the players. But I don;t think you can do that as easily here. Kyle Dubas literally gave the leafs all he could, and the leafs lost because of the same issues they were having since before Keefe was around. So I don't think a lot of fans are content with saying, If only the guys in charge did xyz. No, it's so clearly the players and something in going on with them. And then to jump to Marner well, Matthews was shut down so maybe they should get mad at him but he was just shut down, Marner's play actively made the team worse in some cases.
I don't think Mitch Marner is a bad guy or did something on purpose. I think he made mistakes, I think he's nervous, I think getting down at any point in the series filled him with dread and led to him playing terrible. None of these things are inherently his fault or make him unlikable to the fans. The problems come in when, he's paid to do this, he's paid to get over the hump. He's not making nervous money. He specifically said, Hey I'm good enough for this and I won't be making these dumb mistakes. If you wanna win the Stanley cup you're going to have to pay. And then he got what he waant but he's not fulfilling his side of the bargain.
At the end of the day like you said he's a hockey player, a real ass person with problems and issues but also a lot of good stuff about him too. I think it's fair to say I love Mitch, I think overall he's a good player but jesus christ my dude, what the fuck. I think it's fair for fans, who owe him nothing, to be really fucking pissed at him. And I think it's fair for him to jsut straight up ignore that noise and just come back next year and try harder. I love Mitch, I'll love him no matter how bad he plays or what team he plays on. But jesus, can we not understand why leafs fans are kinda very mad at him? I mean it's been 4 consecutive years of the same stuff, another one if you include 2013. growing time is over, Mitch doesn't make growing money anymore.
Put up or shut up mitchy.
but also i still find it hilarious that the leafs find new ways to explode, it's just so entertaining for me personally. BUT leafs fans, i respect your right to be angry and pissed and want more. Even if who you want more from is a tumblr uwu boy

Billings, Beartooth Pass, Yellowstone River, Big Sky
Montana - August 12-18, 2019
 Monday, August 12
Flights were perfect coming into Billings, the largest city in Montana. Unfortunately that was not the case on the ground when a massive hail storm the night before left no cars at any car rental place. Hm. Let’s think about our options over lunch at local brewery called Uberbrew as recommended from our local transplants sending advice from France. We rented a car from a local rental/used car dealer in town and headed to Red Lodge and our same local family’s vacation cottage on Hauser St. Got the last car at AA&A Car rental in town and set off to Red Lodge. TIp: if in a pinch, look at the app Turo, an Air BNB for cars type thing.
Red Lodge - Cute little town with everything to do such as skiing in the winter, mtn biking, hiking, etc. Fav hike is the Glacier Lake hike. Our pals home is a super cute old clapboard historical home complete with pot belly stove with Broadway, the main drag of Red Lodge, an easy walk. Because of our travel woes, our time to do anything active was consumed, so it left little time for anything except to actually consume at shops, bars and restaurants. Darn. Here is the scoop from our fav local:
 Hey Aurelia!
Bear spray is a must if you go hiking. The Beartooth Market is down the street towards town if you need anything. There is also a nice little gourmet food and wine shop, Babcock and Miles, 105 12th Street West, that also makes good coffee, but not open until 9. That is also a fun place to pick up picnic items if you need lunch for a drive up the Pass. For breakfast, we like Regis Cafe at 501 South Word, open at 7 am. It’s nice to sit outside in the back if it’s good weather. The Cattail Bakery, 203 Broadway, is good for picking up baked goods. They are open early and close when they run out of croissants.
Mas Taco is a short walk from the house, on the other side of the main street, Broadway. It is great for a quick lunch or dinner, closes at 7 pm. Our other favorite is Prerogative Kitchen at 104 Broadway, fun atmosphere and serves small plates that you order at the counter. (Our choice and it was excellent!) There is a pop-up Sicilian restaurant at Ox Pasture (7 Broadway). The atmosphere is wonderful, and the staff is mostly Italian (they come for just the summer)...It’s good, but not fabulous. It is a fun experience, though. We think the Sicilian specials at the top of the menu are the best choices. You might need a reservation. Carbon County steakhouse on Broadway is good if you want a steak. They also own Natali’s Front Bar next door, good for a drink on the patio. (Yep, we did.) The Pollard Hotel is a historical landmark, Calamity Jane and such hung out there back in the day. I do not recommend the restaurant, but their pub is pretty decent and sometimes has live music. Best ice cream is Jubilee, close to Prerogative Kitchen and the Roman movie theater on Broadway.
If you want an interesting something to take back to your daughter, Paris Montana on Broadway has unique, funky “western” clothes and accessories. The owner designs and makes a lot of the items herself.
 Tuesday, August 13
The Beartooth Pass Drive is incredible. It takes about an hour to drive up to the Pass at 10,497 ft. You can make a loop out of it by coming back to Red Lodge (or Billings) as was the case for our hail storm dictated journey) through Wyoming on the Chief Joseph drive through the Sunlight Basin. All together this was about a 5 hr jaunt with minimal stops. Probably 4 if you go back to Red Lodge. We got picnic supplies at the Beartooth Market and left at 8am after breakfast at the Honey Cafe.
The Beartooth is fantastic with incredible 360 degree views of the jagged Beartooth Mtns, and the other ranges in the distance. Alpine lakes are everywhere at the top and you level out onto grassy plateaus. There are hikes along the way, lots of scenic pull offs, Beartooth Lake rec area and the Top of the World stop for snacks, gas and outhouse. Really gorgeous.
The terrain on the Chief Joseph scenic drive is not as dramatic as the Beartooth Highway, but full of vast valleys, grassy plains, igneous dikes and rocky plateaus. The highlight is the Clark Fork Yellowstone river and canyon that runs through most of the Basin.
Would have liked to have gone on to Cooke City, but we had return to Billings to return our local yocal car rental. Luckily, Enterprise had a car for us so off we went to Pray, Montana and the Sage Lodge in the Paradise Valley below the Paradise Range.
The Sage Lodge, which clearly is geared around fishing as it is a partnership of Sage fishing gear along with other fishing brands, sits high on a grassy plain and is quite nice with spa, gourmet restaurant, casual restaurant, hot tub area, mtn biking trails, and lots of fishing stuff. We hopped on two bikes and took a 5 mile ride around the property before having dinner in the grill.
 Wednesday, August 14
Fly fishing on the Yellowstone. A beautiful day starting in the 50’s and up to the low 80’s quickly. Craig Boyd was a spectacular guide with lots of fish tales while being a good instructor and oarsman. It was an A+ day as we snagged probably 30 fish. Mend, strip out and strip in, set that hook were all terms of the day on a 12 mile float from to Side ?? to Livingston. The Yellowstone River is a gorgeous, wide river, which interestingly flows north to the Missouri River, with some nice small rapids, but generally a swift current, but gentle feeling river going through the Paradise Valley.
After our float, we explored the area visiting the famed Chico Hot Springs Lodge, which is quaint and historic National Park feeling with the hot springs contained within a swimming pool setting. The bar has lots of character and the food is supposed to be James Beard material. We were glad to see it and glad to be staying at the Sage. Also drove over to the Yellowstone Valley Lodge which could be a good option for staying with cabins overlooking the river and a well known gourmet restaurant. (Book way in advance.) Ended our touring with a cold Rainer beer at The Saloon in Emmigrant, a “suburb” of Pray....Soaked in the scenery in the hot tub and a lovely dinner at the Fireside Room.
Thursday, August 15
It’s a car tour day as we cruised to Ennis, Montana which is a beautiful drive through the Madison Valley and beside a gorgeous Madison River, which is very similar to the Yellowstone. Ennis is a cute little town with typical Main Street full of fly fishing shops and s smattering of restaurants. With some time to kill, we decided to drop in on some friends and their Ruby RIver Ranch near Alder, Mt. A lovely compound of log cabins and main lodge right on the Ruby River which is a large creek known for its fishing and tubing. A bonus is going through Virginia City and Nevada City, which are historic gold mining towns that are still so authentic western looking that I thought I might be on a movie set.
We headed back to Moonlight via the private shortcut on Jack Creek Road and landed just in time for dinner at the Moonlight Golf Club.

glad you were feeling better! you actually reminded to update my phone so i've done it now lmao. i say gotta blast and gotta go fast way too much so 😮💨 are perfect for those scenarios lmao
imagine a flyers as how to train your dragon segment? perfect! flawless! the people would love it!
catalyst? catalyst😌 tfios could never
oof wtf? he clearly hasn't changed if he can't face how harmful the things he said are. it's truly not that hard to be remorseful and apologize and show true change but yeah pro athletes would rather dig a tunnel under the bar than do the bare minimum🙄
that's so wild to me?? i'm just imagining seattle pulling up in the team bus to teams facilities and saying "we choose _____!" and that player just has to get on the bus and go pick up the next player and head back to seattle alskdj. i do love their whole design but i love the vibes of brady in carolina😩 he'd look good in anything tho, the gray hairs match with everything🤪
me choosing sports for my emotional outlet is my fatal flaw, my teams do not treat me well aksjdj i think they choose to stress me out on purpose tbh. it has been nice and warm! just need me a pool lol. but ooooo that's def in some time😳 i'm sending you ted lasso levels of hope and belief you got this!
i accept all types of homework like this i love it! that story was so nice omg and i didn't realize jason robertson had a brother! i think the nhl has the most sibling power than any other sport. i only know of a couple brother pairs in football but nhl has like a gazillion
that zodiac video is so funny, i died at tkachuk because i'm also a sag and i know i would do the exact same thing please😭💀
the leaf to leaf videos are so precious! i love it! i heard about marleau when he reached that milestone but i didn't much about him. i wish i was watching when he was there because the family vibes are so strong between him and mitch😩 the advice🗣 it was so genuine and sweet i can't wait to watch it again again. wait mitch got a lot of negative attention?? to me he's so wildly good i can't even imagine
willy calling zach zachy is something so personal to me alskdjd. also when he said "eat a good breakfast...have dinner" sir do you eat lunch. also im a firm believer in pineapple on pizza supremacy so i'm glad they're both valid supporters😌☝🏽 also space jam‼️ that's so valid, it was my fave movie growing up fun fact. i can't wait to watch all these leaf to leafs i love it
hope your day is splendid! and that our leafs treat us right tonight!
Kshdjdks did I tell u my friend said this guy 😮‍💨 is coughing ??? Unreal. Anyway my mood is a solid 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 after seeing that leafs OTL smh 🤠
damn now I have to go rewatch it and watch all the rest in the series. Off-season goal is to flesh out the flyers-httyd parallels 😩
yeah oh my god exactly like I understand he was young in 2013 but why not just admit you were wrong and move on. Like his refusal to denounce that stuff now is just major red flags lol. Anyway he’s a pos on ice anyway so idk what I expected ✋🏽
LMFAOOOO NO imagine they do a great north American road trip in an RV or something just collecting all their new players 🗣 nhl make it happen that would be so fun. KSJDJDKDK fingers crossed brady gets to stay in Carolina, you’ve already had haydn cruelly taken from u and that’s pain enough for one season. Ok but ur so right omg the first time I saw the grey in his hair I swear - sniped on sight. What is he so good looking for. Shut up Brady.
thank you !!! Yes I’ve got a couple weeks left, just gotta focus and power through loool
omg yeah you’re so right I think it’s bc lots of them come from richer backgrounds and stuff (hockey is so expensive) and having access to really good coaching and stuff from when they’re very little increases their odds. Still crazy tho and always a cool story !! Imagine playing pro sports against ur sibling, that’s cool as f.
ksjdkdkd I’m a virgo so lots of nolan rep which I’m not mad about. He’s so deadpan it’s great
yeahhh omg so basically when Mitchell was trying to re-sign it took forever for the team and him to agree on terms. NHL has a salary cap which means you need to sign all your players under contracts that total up to less than the cap amount annually, which limits how many players you can pay really big bucks to. This was before the start of last season, so summer 2019, and matthews and JT had already been signed to massive contracts, like $11M+ annually.
I think a lot of leafs fans thought that a) Mitchell wasn’t worth that kind of money bc he wasn’t at the same level as them talent-wise, and b) he would take some kind of “home-town discount” bc he grew up idolizing the leafs and would want to help us out with not reaching the salary cap. I personally hate the second argument, I think you should always pay a player what they’re worth and we shouldn’t begrudge players for wanting to be paid as they should, but obviously there were lots of divisive opinions and people saying he’s not worth anywhere near $11M.
it got pretty ugly as negotiations were taking forever lol with people saying mitch was being arrogant and that his dad (rumoured to be very intense and hard on mitch growing up like pushing him a lot - again all rumours afaik) and him were asking for too much blah blah and we should just give him up. Eventually (it went into preseason iirc lol like into september 2019 so a few months) we signed him for $10.9M annually and if I rmr right a lot of leafs fans were still mad at this number
So it’s really gratifying now to see him fully come into his own as an NHL-er and being like inarguably the 2nd best player on the team and making our best player better etc like he is well worth every penny. I think in hindsight tho that’s why it makes me EMO to watch that Marleau-Mitchy interaction knowing what was to come that summer where he’d get ragged on by so many members of leafs media and the fanbase. Lol if you can’t tell our media suuuucks it’s just such a big franchise and hockey is so important here that everything becomes overblown.
(The same thing happened to willy the year before when he was going to resign. Ppl said he was being cocky, letting his dad get too involved and push around leafs mgmt to try and sign willy to a contract that was worth more than he deserved etc etc. It was rlly frustrating being on social media and stuff at that time cuz he was getting so much hate but anyway kyle dubas is a magician and things worked out 😤)
Also I didn’t even mention that a couple months into 2019-2020 season we fired our head coach at the time (mike babcock a real binch) and replaced him w our current coach. Later there were lots of stories that came out from various players across different teams that babcock was an objectively awful coach and would target certain players and basically torment them/make their time on the team hell. One of the stories that came out was that when mitch was a rookie he made him make a list ranking his teammates’ work ethic at practices and stuff and told him it was confidential. Later he told the players that mitch ranked lowest about the list and that mitch thought they didn’t work hard etc. So so so fked up like why would u make ur 19 y/o rookie do that lmao. Apparently the players he revealed that to tho (like the ones mitch ranked lowest - rumoured that Kadri was one) turned around and defended mitch in front of babcock and said he should’nt have done that lmao. Anyway so then ppl were like oh …. In hindsight if mitch has to deal w/be targeted by this POS maybe he DOES deserve to be paid a lot 😳😳😳 anyway good riddance that evil man is gone now.
whew catch me writing 500 word essays on Tumblr dot com abt how much I love Mitch kshdndkd
YES PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA ♥️♥️♥️ so good. I love willys voice tbh something so comforting abt it 😤
the leafs were actin wild tonight but hey. It was basically a nothing game and there were some positives !! (Freddie playing again, JT goal, no injuries, that comeback and late tying goal) it’s gonna be ok 😤😤😤😤
Ok I know this has already been an hours worth of reading so today I will just show you some pics of stuff I saw on hockey/leafs Reddit today.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
This is about a wild prospect who is only 19 y/o and had severe post-Covid complications including myocarditis (inflammation of heart muscle basically - quite scary as it can lead to arrythmias/abnormal heart rhythms). I’m so happy for him but gosh that quote from him really made me cry.
Tumblr media
switching to something funny - it took me so fkn long to understand this SKDJKDKD I’m not proud 😭
Tumblr media
and finally I saw this tonight and the first comment just killed me kdjdkdkd silver linings babey
I hope you had a wonderful day ♥️♥️♥️ Eid tomorrow wahoo 🤩

Best GMs and coaches in the league ACC to you?
we can start with gms because coaching is a bit more complicated. best gms in the league is easy to look at because like, who has a good team? who has had a consistently good team? whose locker room is the most cohesive, whose coaching staff is the best? who is the best at acquiring and keeping the best players, coaches, staff, etc? and you can see that in the way teams play.
(putting this under the cut because it got long. and i mean Long.)
so, in no particular order: kyle dubas (leafs), steve yzerman (red wings, i will explain this later), don waddell (canes), julien brisebois (lightning), joe sakic (avs), and kelly mccrimmon/george mcphee (golden knights) (god i still hate that name and also will explain this later too) are the best in the league in my opinion. honorable mention to marc bergevin, who has held onto his job much longer than he arguably should have, but still has a decent team on the ice and a decent coaching staff, although the french rule does severely handicap them (i understand why it exists but it does, it just does).
david poile (preds) is the longest tenured gm in the league (has been the preds gm since fucking 1997, thats insane, thats legit before i was born, what the fuck), and i do genuinely think he is very good at his job, and that he is very hockey smart, but oh boy have his recent decisions been suspect as hell, and that reflects in the state of his team. doug wilson (sharks), who is the second longest tenured gm in the nhl, is in the exact same boat (the karlsson deal is a nightmare, and also did he just forget that his star core was gonna get old and retire or ??).
with dubas, waddell, brisebois, sakic, and mccrimmon/mcphee all have the same basic strengths: they draft well, they have a fundamental understanding of their team structure and how to manage public perception of the team and everything that implies, and they have two fingers on the pulse of their locker room at all times. im not going to pretend to know as much about sakic and mccrimmon/mcphee as i do the eastern gms, but it doesnt take much to figure it out. look at the avs, and their locker room, the success theyve found after being dead fucking last in the league. look at the knights and their incredible success that theyve found after literally not existing before 2017. ive talked about dubas a lot on my blog, but its incredibly easy to see that waddell and brisebois do the same shit he does, and i can do a deep dive on them if asked. bergevin has moments of brilliance, like the suzuki trade and acquiring caufield and anderson, but things like kotkaniemi’s development and their entire blue line give me a massive pause, which is why he’s not in the main list. he’s a good gm. he’s just not the best.
in regards to steve yzerman: you have to understand that this is the man that built the tampa bay lightning as we know them. this man was gm of the bolts until fucking 2018. tampa bay has been a monster in the eastern conference for years, BECAUSE of the work steve yzerman put in. his team set the franchise record for wins, and he was the first and is the only lightning gm to have won gm of the year. look up the 17-18 roster. it is, essentially, the roster that won them the cup last year. make no mistake, i think brisebois is great, and hes on the list for a reason, but the biggest part of brisebois’ success was steve yzerman’s incredible hockey mind. brisebois essentially had to sell off a fourth of his roster, and the lightning are still a top team in their division and in the league, and thats why he’s there (it is so incredibly easy to fuck shit up post cup win), but the brisebois lightning would not exist without steve yzerman, plain and simple.
what steve yzerman is doing in detroit should be watched very, very closely by every single person in the hockey world. youre fucking nuts if youre not paying attention to them, not gonna lie. the mantha trade was excellent, if really sad if you know even a bit about the wings, but the amount of draft picks steve yzerman has amassed and the way he’s using the prospects and players he already has is really fucking admirable. mike babcock left the red wings organization absolutely in tatters, and i think, honestly, it was always steve yzerman’s plan to go home to detroit and rebuild. if there is anyone who is going to strike absolute gold this draft year, it is steve yzerman. watch the red wings, i am telling you, keep a beat on detroit. they are going to be good. its not an if, its a when.
(real quick on the knights situation: mcphee was the first gm of the knights, and was also president of hockey ops at the same time, and then in 2019 mcphee said he was just gonna focus on his job as president, but we all know hes still an integral part of the way the knights are run, and he and mccrimmon have kinda been building the knight together since the beginning anyway bc mccrimmon was originally mcphee’s agm. so. thats why theyre together)
as for coaches, it’s very simple. rod brind’amour (canes), sheldon keefe (leafs, yes im biased, we’ll get into it), jared bednar (avs), joel quenneville (panthers), jon cooper (lightning), barry trotz (isles), and mike sullivan (pens).
(disclaimer: obviously coaching is done as a team, and assistants and specialist coaches and staff are all very important, but the head coaches set the tone and organize the entire machine, if you will, so im going to be talking about head coaches as if theyre the entire coaching staff. its just easier this way im sorry)
im gonna just start with the easy ones: barry trotz, mike sullivan, and jon cooper have been in the league for years. cooper is the longest tenured coach in the nhl for a reason (again, just look at the tampa bay lightning. its the gm’s job to make the coach’s life easier and the coach’s job to make the gm’s life easier, and this is one of the prime examples of it in the league. its dope as hell tbh), trotz is one of the most respected coaches in the hockey world for a reason (the caps lost something when he walked. they just did. and now the isles are absolute hell to play against and that is largely the coaching of barry trotz, you legit cannot tell me im wrong), and while mike sullivan does have his faults, i think hes found a way to please both management and the crosby-and-malkin unit, which has been really really fucking hard to do. he also led the pens to back to back cups, which you can never really uh. ignore. lmao. so theres those three.
i know less about bednar, but again, another example of the coach and gm working together to make each others’ lives easier. sakic gets bednar the players and staff he needs to make the avs better, and bednar takes those players and staff and makes them into the absolute giant they are. it wouldve been really, really easy to fuck up makar’s development, or bowen byram’s, or sam girard’s, or ryan graves’s, or jost or mackinnon or rantanen’s, but he hasn’t, and he hasn’t just given up on players like burakovsky or kadri, he’s given them new life as players and made them more successful.
joel quenneville is the reason the bl/ckh/wks were a legacy team point blank period. sure they had the talent, sure the gm drafted well, but you do not get the legacy of the chicago bl/ckh/wks without joel quenneville. they fired him on a whim and it absolutely was a mistake, and the moment the cats hired him i literally out loud said ‘oh no’ because i knew exactly what that meant for the leafs and their position in the standings. the panthers are underrated generally, yes, but they would not be the powerhouse they are this season without quenneville. just look at q’s wiki stats. he’s absolutely unbeilevable. he won the jack adams in fucking 2000, before he’d even won any of the cups with the h/wks. i cant tell you what kind of a locker room coach this guy is, but i can tell you his teams win and win convincingly, and that firing him was the biggest mistake the h/wks have made in years.
whenever i talk about coaching, i talk about rod brindamour and sheldon keefe in the same breath every single time because there is no match, and i mean none, for the love inside those locker rooms. the avs, maybe, but my point stands. keefe and brindamour fucking BLEED team spirit, it is at the center of their coaching styles and their teams are good because of it specifically. marner and matthews are good, yes, and they always have been, but they have surpassed all expectation and then some with keefe. aho, teravainen, and svechnikov are good, yes, and they always have been, but they have surpassed all expectation with brindamour. brindamour and keefe have both hashtag played the game, so they Get It, and more than that, theyve grown and changed their understanding of the game as the game itself has changed, and so they can command the authority of their teams while also connecting to them on a really deep level. i should make a note here that keefe and brindamour are incredibly, deeply hockey smart, and that they are also just technically good coaches, skimming their wiki or nhl dot com articles will tell you that, but what makes them stand out to me is that their players would fucking die for them. the leafs would go through the end boards for keefe, the canes would do the same for brindamour. travis dermott said it best when keefe got promoted: boys wanna play for him. beyond that, the management skills both brindamour and keefe have are just frankly amazing (the amount of ego keefe specifically has to manage in the leafs locker room is astounding and he does it so incredibly brilliantly). the leafs and the canes are talented, yes, and would have been talented regardless of who was coaching them. but brindamour and keefe bring both of those teams from talented to exceptional, and the true mark of an amazing coach is not only how many games their team wins, but how they win them, and the leafs and canes have been winning games this year for and because of each other, and that starts with their coaches. what makes a great coach, to me, is not the talent on the team (though that certainly helps), but how the coach manages his players no matter who they are, and how he helps those players grow not just as players as people, because no matter how much pure stats people and twitter hockey dudebros wanna deny it, that shit does affect on ice play, and it does make good players better.
so theres my analysis of the best coaches and gms of the nhl, im so sorry this is so long, oh my god. also, shoutout to @bishops--knifetrick for sending me an ask about this literally a month ago that i just never answered, sorry for that, but here i hope this is good. :)

K and U for the fandom meme :3
K -Say something nice about someone in any of your fandoms
That’s honestly so difficult because we’re gonna be here for hours if I have to choose only one, so I won’t. I love all the people who make metas in the Ouat, Killing Eve, The Good Place fandoms. I love anyone who creates things, especially the ones who do that for the “not as popular” ships of their respective fandom. @lumadreamland and @onceland make/made amazing gifs and have kept me interested in the Ouat fandom even in times I shouldn’t have been, eventhough we probably agree on very few things. @goldenxqueenx was one of the ultimate GQers, her writing skills and ideas were so in touch with mine, we had such a great collaboration and talks, she was one of the most defining people in fandom for me. @goldenqueen4ever Makes amazing manips and has helped the fandom through her creations in difficult times even. @snakess-and-stones was the first LEGIT GQer I met and is a great friend of mine, I have only good things to say (also be active in the fandom again pretty please?) And of course @crocodilequeen2011 who is my best fandom friend currently and we’ve kept each other sane and engaged on numerous occassions, I can’t express my gratitude well enough.
U - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms
Regina Mills from Ouat (honestly I never trully distinguish between her and Rumple, I only chose her because her character is closer to mine, I love them both)
Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place
Eve Polastri from Killing Eve (dude, same thing with Villanelle and her, I never choose between them, this is just arbitrary)
Faith Lehane from Btvs/Angel
CC Babcock from The Nanny
Honorary mention to Cat Crant from Supergirl because she wouldn’t let go from my mind if I didn’t
fandom meme: come at me friend

Hi! I have a question and I thought you were a good person to ask for help, if that's alright?
So. I've decided to try to write my first-ever OC/Player fic and I was wondering if you had any advice/tips/anything at all on how to go about doing it well? I've never been the best with OC development. Which is why I've stuck to either self-insert or straight up Player/Player fics. I either get to be vague (self-inserts) or have to do a lot less character development because the personalities and information and everything are already out there to work with (Player/Player).
Take as long as you need to formulate a response to this. I'm in no rush at all. It'll give me some time to sit down and think about what I want this character to be like as I continue on with further installments of the universe!!
Oh! And any tips about universe building {like. how to make the fic seem believable in the setting its in} would be great too, if that's not too much of a bother?
Thanks in advance and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day!!
First of all, congratulations!  I love reading YN fics but there is just something about creating OCs that is just...*cleches fist*
Anyways,
The most detailed post I’ve written about my own writing process can be found HERE and HERE and HERE.  People have also asked me about character development before, and honestly, the one thing I can say is be true to your characters you want to create.  I always start with an idea/vision in my head, or maybe I see a face/aesthetic that inspires me, and I go from there -- simple as that!  I know it’s much harder for other people, so what I usually suggest is filling out those ‘76 Question’ type quizzes for the character that you have in mind, so that you truly develop them and they don’t become a one-dimensional character.
In terms of universe building...you just gotta start somewhere.  I always base mine in reality.  Like just as an example, I started posting Alone, Together in April of 2019 but it BEGINS in July of 2018.  That made it possible for me to record the events of the Leafs season and write about them accurately, but also building MY WORLD on top of reality, if that makes sense.  The only fic I’ve ever written that takes place in “the future” or at least concurrently is my most recent one I’m posting now, Patience is a Virtue.  I only did this because I wanted to try something different.  It definitely gives me MUCH more freedom because I don’t have to adhere to “Oh, this can’t happen because the team wasn’t in Toronto!” or “This can’t happen because X, Y, or Z”...but I actually kind of like doing that LOL, I like rooting my stories in a very believable reality that makes people remember what happened but also has this layer of “Hey, my characters are going through *this* when *that* was happening!”  Like Willy/Aberdeen when Mike Babcock was fired.
I hope this all makes sense!!!  You can also check out the ‘my writing’ tag on my blog for other instances where I talk about my writing, but honestly, the links I provided you already are the most useful ones.

i know nothing about the devils except jack hughes is good and lots of them are pretty 🤷‍♀️ what's your general take on the team & who are your faves & anything else you wanna talk about? ❤️
alright alright ALRIGHT im finally getting to this one lets GO.
miles wood is the hottest guy on the team, and also the second oldest, somehow. the devils are basically just a college hockey team plus miles wood and andread johnsson (who used to be a leaf and more than likely will be going to seattle) and pk subban. they legit just traded every single one of their vets, they simply said no veteran leadership, only nico hischier. who is captain now, and who i am in deep gay love with. excellent vibes, excellent player, excellent eyebrows. love that bitch so so much tbh.
mac blackwood is their goalie, he’s absolutely elite and he looks like a dude that works in a frozen banana shop on a california boardwalk and surfs in his spare time. excellent vibes, 10/10 would recommend. ty smith is their rookie dman, hes great and he and jack hughes are roommates and ty does all the cooking and cleaning apparently, and also they were ENEMIES at some point and i love them. pk subban is pk subban; not as talented as he once was but a fucking ray of sunshine all the same. i love him as well. damon severson is also important and does have an a, but honestly hes kinda boring. connor carrick will always be the love of my life because he was also once a leaf, and he was the hill i wouldve died on but he kinda got mike babcock-ed.
then, of course, youve got mikey mcleod and nate bastian, who are on a line with miles wood now (the bmw line, which is great), and who are otherwise known as the superbuddies because they have been on the same team for literal years, from their junior team the missisauga steelheads to the devs’ ahl team the binghampton devils to the current new jersey devils. theyve been asked multiple times if theyve ever gotten sick of each other, and both have said no. its all incredibly romantic. what a narrative.
and for the obligatory draft class of 2015er, youve got pavel zacha, who has been underwhelming but is very much starting to come into himself. the devils also have a FUCK TON of rookies, but the best of the bunch (other than ty smith) has been imo egor sharangovich, who he very pretty and can score goals and has a very lovely wife. will butcher and the jespers (who do not pronounce their names the same way despite the spelling and also being from the same country) are also players to watch.
its worth noting that legit the only players on this team who have played more than 250 nhl games are pk subban, damon severson, ryan murray, miles wood, and pavel zacha. wild shit.

Counter UAS Global Market To Perceive A Momentous Growth At 28.50% CAGR During The Forecast Period
Overview
The Global Counter-UAS Market is expected to reach USD 2,235.1 Million by 2024, expanding at a CAGR of 28.50% during the forecast period.
The counter-UAS providers are investing heavily in advanced technologies to offer enhanced security and detection capabilities to the armed forces. For instance, the SkyWall 100 system by Counter Drone Solutions, an Australia-based company, has an onboard artificial intelligence (AI) computer that can identify a drone and analyze its movements to ensure capture. This shoulder-mounted system uses compressed air to fire a net, which ensures that the drone doesn’t break as it guides back down to ground. The SkyWall 100 can be reloaded quickly and easily to capture multiple drones in less time.

I never thought that living in a city could potentially be environmentally conscious. I just always assumed that by living in a city, I was contributing to a problem of pollution, overpopulation, and other nastiness. I now know, that living in a city doesn’t have to be as bad as people think! Watching the video on Lehigh versus Babcock for example really put things into perspective for me. The whole concept of smart growth is something I personally never considered, but I now understand how vital it is for a healthy community to exist. Robertson defines smart growth as growth that “accommodates growth by locating development in city centers and older suburbs with existing infrastructure in ways that preserve open space and natural resources while supporting and revitalizing existing cities” (215). This approach to infrastructure prevents that nasty sprawl that encourages so much driving and pollution, as well as a more connected community.
There’s something about issues that happen right in your backyard that make them much more… Real. Reading about Orlando and the horrible condition of some of their communities really made me sad. Just last week, I spoke of our deteriorating air quality and questioned how long it would be before breathing the air would become problematic. I did not realize we were already there. “The decrepit air-conditioning unit in Young’s apartment spewed out dust and forced her to keep the windows open, even when traffic was heavy. Sometimes, soot and particles floated through the air inside her apartment like it was snowing dust” (Jackson, 34). These people are living in such a horribly urban environment, that the effects can be seen in the very air they breathe. Where even the AC in your home is too dusty and grimy to breathe. How can places like this exist? Not to mention the fact that the neighborhood is conveniently all black. The government is nothing but shady.
What is there to do when the government is the one holding you down? This community in Orlando is being attacked by the very elected officials that are supposed to protect them. In another interview, Jackson focuses on how emotional the people in this fight can get, when their governors are out to destroy their livelihoods at the most basic of levels. ““Too many people I know have cancer. Too many people I know have respiratory problems. Too many people I know don’t have the proper information to know how to diagnosis what’s going on,” said Lawanna Gelzer, a community activist. “I get upset a lot. I’m David and I have a slingshot and a rock. And Goliath is my government, my elected officials, with billions of dollars to fight me” (36). Air is not something that should be different from one area to the next. This is the most basic, most essential thing there is on the planet. Yet we live in a world in which it is not guaranteed equally to everyone… Pathetic.

Summary: When Fran doesn't come down to breakfast after spraining her ankle, the whole house is concerned for her—especially Niles and Mr. Sheffield. Set after "An Affair to Dismember."
A/N: Okay, so I've binge re-watched nearly four seasons of The Nanny in four days, and had to get at least one fic out of my system, lmao.
Fran Drescher's acting in "An Affair to Dismember" when she suddenly broke while talking to Maxwell made me sensitive. ;-;

Breakfast is a remarkably boring affair without Miss Fine bursting through the door, raising her arms in a floral robe, and proclaiming, with signature adenoidal stylings, “Good moooorning, everyone!”
The clink of silverware, the scraping of ceramic plates, the ruffling sound of Mr. Sheffield anxiously attacking the New York Times like a new Andrew Lloyd Webber play has just dropped—all of it is so terribly drab that Niles spends the first fifteen minutes of her pronounced absence coughing loudly in the hopes that his employer will pick up the hint to do something about it.
“Oh, do go get a bloody cough drop, old man,” he finally snaps, smacking his newspaper down on the table. “You’re driving me mad.”
“Sorry, sir,” Niles arches a brow as he refills Mr. Sheffield’s coffee mug. “I have asthma.”
He turns away to replace the coffee pot on the side table.
“And half a mind to kick your tetchy derrière,” he mutters under his breath.
“What was that, Niles?”
“Nothing, sir! Just saying thank you for your attentive care.”
“Dad,” Master Brighton thankfully interrupts, “where’s Fran, and what have you done to make her mad this time?”
Niles immediately turns around again in time to see his boss’s shoulders straighten in that way they often do when he’s indignant.
Or guilty.
Or some mixture of them both.
“I beg your pardon, Brighton,” he replies stiffly. “Why do you immediately assume I’m the problem here?”
“Process of elimination,” Brighton shrugs. “Fran’s not mad at me, Maggie, or Grace, and Niles is one of her closest friends.”
“You’re so astute, Master Brighton,” Niles smiles wryly as he moves to the left to get a better view of Mr. Sheffield’s face. The vein in his temple is beginning to throb, which is always a good time.
“She hasn’t dated anyone recently,” Miss Margaret pipes up.
“And she’s always fighting with her ma,” Miss Grace adds, “but that's never kept her from Belgian waffles before.”
“So, Dad,” Brighton grins, patting his father once on the back, “unless our math is wrong, that leaves you.”
“Goodness me,” Mr. Sheffield mutters, angrily stabbing a piece of link sausage with his fork. “I didn’t know I was in the presence of the lost Hardy Boy.”
“So you did do something!” Margaret exclaims.
“No! I bloody well did not, Nancy Drew. For your information, Miss Fine accidentally hurt her ankle clubbing last night with Val. I don’t think it’s broken, but I’ve called a doctor to come by just to check.”
“Tsk, tsk. And you didn’t offer to pick her up Cinderella-style and swoop her downstairs so she wouldn’t miss breakfast?” Niles asks chidingly, only to be greeted with a nasty glare.
“Yes, I did offer to bring her down to breakfast as a matter of fact... but Miss Fine seemed strangely subdued when I spoke to her through the door... I didn’t know what to make of it to tell you the truth...”
Mr. Sheffield’s brow contracts as he searches Niles’s face for an answer, and Niles stares back just as studiously, observing the profound concern in his employer’s dark eyes.
The gentleness.
The romance.
The stunningly oblivious care.
Niles sighs fondly.
Unlike Miss Babcock, he’s never had the heart to kick poor puppies when they’re down.
“I’ll bring her Advil and a fresh ice pack,” he promises. “Perhaps some pain relief will help her to regain her spirit.”
“I hope so,” Mr. Sheffield replies, self-consciously turning to his plate again, the tips of his ears rather pink. “I hate when Miss Fine isn’t feeling well.”
“Here, here,” the whole table concurs.
Twenty minutes later, Niles is at Miss Fine’s door with a silver tray laden with all the essentials: painkillers, an ice pack, a mug of coffee (milk instead of cream and extra sugar), and a copy of the new edition of Gloss. He lightly taps on her door with the side of his loafer.
“Miss Fine, can I come in?”
“No,” comes an immediate and sharp reply. “I’m not dressed!”
“How discouraging,” Niles sighs smilingly. “What ever shall I do?”
“Suff’a, and at least give me a minute to find a brassiere.”
“Oh, we’ll be here all day then.”
He hears a strange thud, a collection of evaluations (“dirty, dirty, slutty, Maggie’s, dirty”), and an assortment of Yiddish curse words he now vaguely recognizes from being friends with Miss Fine for nearly four years now. And then finally—
“Come in, Jeeves, but shut the door behind ya ‘cuz I haven’t applied a morning layer of lipstick yet.”
Niles elbows the knob and pushes with his shoulder until the door lights open to a peculiar sight. Far from being neat, Miss Fine’s room looks like Macy’s after its annual Black Friday sale with clothes strewn everywhere—from the dressers to the wardrobes to the floor. An empty suitcase is lying on the bed next to Miss Fine, who is sitting in bed wearing an oversized t-shirt, her injured ankle propped up on a pillow. Niles can tell, even from the doorway, that it’s red and swollen, but to his satisfaction and relief, it doesn’t appear to be broken.
“Welcome to the jungle,” Miss Fine mutters when she notices his incredulous gaze. “We got all the animals out t’day.”
“I can see that,” Niles replies, placing his tray on her bedside table and shutting the door. With his usual efficiency, he then walks back over, retrieves the ice pack, and gently places it on the affected area, frowning when she flinches.
“Mr. Sheffield said that the doctor was coming at ten,” he says as he gently lowers himself onto the bed, clasping his hands primly on top of his lap.
“Mm,” Fran grunts noncommittally, grabbing the two Advil pills and knocking them back with a swig of coffee.
“What? You’re not curious as to whether or not said doctor in question is single, Jewish, and living in a Manhattan penthouse? Miss Fine”—Niles reaches over and places the back of his hand on Fran’s head—“do you have a fever?”
“Oh, Niles,” she swats his hand away, “I’m not in the mood.”
“It’s been awhile since I’ve heard that one.”
“Niles!”
“Sorry, Miss Fine,” he withdraws his hand with a laugh. “You know I have to warm up before Miss Babcock arrives.”
“Glad to assist,” Fran quips, taking another sip of coffee, and it’s only as she closes her eyes to savor the taste, that he notices there are lines beneath her eyes from what seems to have been a sleepless night.
The smile sinks from his face.
“You know,” he says quietly, “in all of our acquaintance, I’ve never known of you to injure yourself while dancing.”
Fran opens her eyes only to immediately glance away, tapping her long nails against her mug.
“Val tripped me up when she thought she saw Elton John,” she shrugs dully. “Turns out it was just a really lifelike poster of him behind the bar...”
“I see,” Niles returns, raising a brow. “It was nice of Miss Toriello to forgo her weekend trip with her parents to come back and… boogie woogie oogie with you.”
“Dammit,” she pouts, scrunching her nose. “I didn’t think I’d told you that.”
“You didn’t. I overheard you and Miss Toriello gabbing on the phone about it yesterday morning.”
Fran can’t seem to help herself; she smiles crookedly, even as she shakes her head.
“I dunno who’s more absorbent sometimes—you or the dish sponge.”
He smiles back at her, patting her uninjured leg gently.
“Me, naturally."
"I can believe it, Chatty Cathy," she sighs.
"Now tell me, Miss Fine"—he regains his solemnity quickly, unwilling to let her deflect with jokes—"why does your room look like a tornado went through Loehmann’s?”
Her dark eyes immediately glance around the messy room, as though looking for an excuse and failing to find one.
It’s only now that Niles is sitting down, taking everything in, that he notices that most of the articles strewn about are her favorite clothing items, from her holographic Versace dress to the black tube top that Mr. Sheffield can’t pry his eyes away from every time she wears it.
“I almost did a very stupid thing, Niles,” she half-whispers, looking down into her coffee cup, her fingers tensed and shivering around the handle. “And the thing is, maybe it wasn’t really all that stupid? Maybe it was the smartest thing I could of done in a lifetime of doin’ so many stupid things.”
She pauses briefly before sardonically adding, “People included.”
Though Niles doesn’t have enough dots to connect the full picture, he has what he needs in the way of evidence to get the basic gist: Nigel being in town, the two of them going out, Nigel leaving town, the suitcase, the swollen ankle, and Miss Fine's uncharacteristic melancholy, smeared across her face so sharply that it may as well be lipstick.
He swallows thickly, suddenly grasping how close that they had all been to losing Fran forever.
“Well,” he says, making an effort to hitch an oblivious smile on his face, “isn’t it your mother who says that everything happens for a reason? It seems as though you’re right where you belong.”
“Yeah,” she snorts indelicately. “Twenty-nine multiple times over, single, and livin’ in a mansion with a man who won’t even commit to his meal orders at restaurants, much less his very available and desperate nanny.”
“Beautiful, young, and living in a mansion with three children who love you, a butler who’d be lost without you, and a man who won’t commit to his tie choices either but still cares for you deeply all the same,” Niles corrects her softly. “He was very worried for you when you didn’t come down to breakfast this morning. He didn’t even do the crossword on the Times.”
“Gee,” she rolls her eyes playfully, “how romantic.”
“Very,” Niles grins, “a modern day Romeo—emotional hangups and all.”
With that, he pats Fran again and stands up; he has no doubt that Mr. Sheffield will be calling for him soon to interrogate him as to Miss Fine’s wellbeing.
Maybe he can even get C.C. on speaker phone to rub it in her face.
“Y’know, Niles,” Fran smiles at him fondly, “if this whole Mr. Sheffield thing doesn’t work out, we should elope in Vegas in ten yea's.”
“Only if you wear this little number,” he says, bending down and picking up a black cocktail dress from the floor, folding it neatly over his arm.
“You wish you could be so lucky.”
“If we’re going to be in Vegas, anything can happen, I suppose.”
After he retrieves the silver tray from the bedside table, he bends down and kisses Miss Fine lightly on the head, his heart hurting when he notices the way that she closes her eyes beneath the gentle touch—young and vulnerable and terribly hurt by something he can’t quite fix with a well-timed witticism.
“Get some rest, Miss Fine," her murmurs against her head. "I'll check on you a bit."
“Thanks, hubby."
Scarcely ten minutes later, he’s down in Mr. Sheffield’s office as per usual, offering the producer a fresh cup of tea even though he had already drunk his traditional two cups at breakfast.
He insisted, though, on a third, for some excuse he couldn’t quite come up with.
And instead of coming up with an excuse, he immediately asked for all the particulars of Miss Fine’s health.
Predictable chump.
“Thanks, old boy,” Mr. Sheffield frowns, returning to his crossword, tapping the end of his pen arrhythmically against the paper. “Let me know when the doctor for Miss Fine arrives. I want to be there when he checks her over.”
“Ooh la-la-la,” Niles hums, dropping a sugar cube into the tea with a zesty plop.
Mr. Sheffield places his pen down on the desk angrily.
“Not like that… I just want to ensure she’s going to be well… you know, for the children’s sake.”
“Yes,” he sighs theatrically. “How will the children ever be able to bear their nanny having a twisted ankle?”
“Oh, shut up,” Mr. Sheffield snaps. “I don’t pay you to be sarcastic.”
“No, sir, you pay me to help you with the crossword when you’re missing three-across,” Niles smirks knowingly when he glances down at the incomplete puzzle. “What’s the hint?”
Mr. Sheffield adjusts his wire-rimmed glasses on the bridge of his nose before looking down again.
“A word that means feeling bad for not doing something that you should have done all along. Disappointment. A sense of shame.”
Niles straightens up with a long-suffering shake of his head.
“Oh, sir, do I really have to spell it out for you?”

Technology to allow remote participation | News, Sports, Jobs – Marshalltown Times Republican
TR Photo by Trevor Babcock Director of Technology Amy Harmsen asks members of the Marshalltown School Board to approve the purchase of new technology to be installed in the board room allowing the capability for remote participants at board meetings.

New technology will be installed to upgrade Marshalltown Community School District’s board room allowing for remote participation at meetings and more.
The Marshalltown Community School Board voted unanimously Monday night to approve a $38,517.54 purchase of new audio and visual equipment to be installed in the board room as soon as possible.
Director of Technology Amy Harmsen said technological capabilities in the school board room make communicating with remote participants difficult, while other board members noted complications of including remote participants.
One of the goals of the new equipment Harmsen said, would be to make board meetings more open to the public and to increase community engagement.
“We believe not only with the COVID situation that this room should be upgraded to include some new audio and visual equipment, but also just to make these meetings more accessible in general,” Harmsen said. “For people who maybe can’t be here in person but would like to be, or if they would add something to present.”
Superintendent Theron Schutte said the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed shortcomings around the capability for outside participation in meetings, and approving
“It’s always, I think, a goal to be as transparent as we can as a district and board,” Schutte said.
The new equipment includes a new digital signal processor adding capabilities for voice lift, presentation audio, conferencing and echo cancellation. Three new cameras will be installed with two facing the board tables and one facing the guest table. The guest table will have added USB capability for connection to a designated ZOOM laptop for remote participants. Video and audio will be controllable through a 10-inch touch panel located at the press table. A new video streaming device will record meetings and live stream to YouTube and Facebook
“We can’t predict the future. We don’t know what the future is going to look like, so the more versatile we can be the better off we will be,” board member Janis McGinnis said.
Harmsen said the new capabilities could open up more uses for the room including the potential for students to utilize the technology. Students have already taken part in operating the camera and running the live stream for board meetings, but the new technology she said would give students a chance to work with more up to date equipment and have a higher production value.
In other business:
The school board voted unanimously to approve the budget for the 2021-22 school year. The property tax rate as part of the budget is an estimated $18.13 per $1,000 in taxable valuation. The rate is a decrease of $0.20 from the current budget, which has an $18.33 property tax rate per $1,000 in taxable valuation.
