Nickel's sense of guilt and fear of change. [Character/II S3 Episode 14 Analysis, part 1/?]
Today, the longest episode of Invitational has dropped, and I have many thoughts of it as well. Might do more posts analyzing the events that ocurred as of now in canon, but I would like to talk about the heaviest part in the lore and how most people are not getting it completely (in my opinion), and that being: Nickel's current point of view of Balloon and his relationship with Suitcase and BB.
Tumblr media
We all know that Nickel's actions hurted the Grand alliance, but what happened in the episode is that they showed how apparently, Nickel doesn't get exactly that things were completely fucked up.
In the episode, he mainly focuses on the good memories he had with BB and Suitcase, and doesn't even seem to hate Suitcase either, unlike what most people thought (me included to an extent, though I did see him being hurt mostly with their relationship and what happened in s2), but.
Nickel doesn't realize that he actually fucked up with them a lot, and that's the main issue.
Like, sure. He knows that stuff were messy at points but that's all he says. He mainly focuses on the good moments he had with them, maybe that's a product of him growing once he got eliminated and came to terms with himself that "well yeah there was a bit complicated shit but we still had fun together", but deep down he feels a sort of... guilt? Regarding Suitcase.
Tumblr media
But even then, Balloon scolds him for trying to erase the times where Nickel made all of them feel bad. Hell! Even then Balloon recognizes that Nickel hurted Baseball deeply! And he says how Suitcase was the only one who had enough courage to stand up for her! Because hey! Nickel did use the same treatment that he used with Suitcase on Baseball! But the difference is that BaseBall kept making excuses for him!
The person who Nickel has been, alongside Baseball, "ignoring" of some sorts, has been Suitcase.
But here's the thing as well: Nickel doesn't know how to make things better again.
Tumblr media
Nickel doesn't understand... feelings and complex emotions to put it shortly. He's afraid of change, and the way he just ignores the bad stuff that happened and tries to say that it's the only way that things can work, is... somewhat sad. Nickel doesn't understand a lot of stuff. He probably thinks that, at the end of the day, those were just little conflicts and that there was more good than bad.
But... that would mean he would also be running away from his consciousness over what Suitcase told him.
About how none of what they had was real.
He doesn't realize the damage he has done because hey. As much as you all like to think that Nickel didn't have his reasons to be a dick towards Balloon, he did. He actually did. He even mentions it in this episode, that if Balloon didn't try to manipulate everyone just as S1 started, maybe things would be different.
Nickel SAW and KNOWS Balloon's by his awful actions, and he wanted to protect BaseBall and Suitcase from him, since he thinks that Balloon CAN'T be trust-worthy after everything he did in S1.
That's why he was so aggressive as well towards Balloon. Yes, he cared for BaseBall, but he also cared for Suitcase deeply. The thing is that Suitcase was Balloon's friend, and Nickel can't bring himself to think that someone who he saw being such an awful person, could possibly be targetting someone who he cares about as well. So that's why he tried to push Balloon away for so long. He tried to keep his relationship with Suitcase and BB, he even says it in S2 when Suitcase confesses that she voted for him.
But of course, this is even more complicated. Both Nickel and Balloon fucked up, but Nickel fucked up for a longer time. Balloon was actually changing, and Nickel did only take the protective stance when this was happening. Which like, Nickel was right on that. He had his reasons to NOT trust Balloon. The problem is that he couldn't accept that Balloon was changing, and that he wasn't realizing that his actions were hurting both BB and Suitcase.
What I think that people don't get, or what hurts me the most, is the fact that Nickel is in denial. But it's merely the fact that when he hears Suitcase's voice, he doesn't get angry or mad, or even panics, no.
He's just... shocked.
Tumblr media
What are you supposed to tell someone who went through hell, thanks to you, even if you tried to protect her from whom you thought was bad? What are you supposed to tell the friend who you tried to protect and instead hurted them in awful ways?
What are you even supposed to do in that situation?
It's not only that, but the fact that he didn't even think twice when walking towards her, didn't even question if she was truly Suitcase. Like, he immediately went on and tried to explain himself to her-
Tumblr media
He completely forgot about everything because he wanted to talk to her and, I do think that he feels guilty for what he did, but he can't put it to words/can't understand it completely after all- but his first instict after seeing Suitcase is to talk to her about it.
Tumblr media
He wants to explain himself to her- maybe even apologize, but he doesn't know how.
The thing is that Nickel is smart. With logical stuff, not feelings, according to Adam himself. And that fucks it all up for him.
Nickel can't handle change.
Suitcase can understand change.
Balloon is always changing.
And BaseBall can't keep up with it.
And that shows it here.
Nickel is a complicated character. Guilt is eating him constantly but he lacks emotional intelligence. He can accept that stuff went wrong, but seem doesn't understand what or why they did go wrong.
He regrets what he did to Suitcase most likely judging from his behaviour the mere second he saw her, but he can't tell why exactly. Same thing as Nickel probably realizing that he keeps on messing up the more he clings into that mentality. He tries to move on from the past, but he can't. He even says it. There's no way to make things feel better as of now, so that's why he pretends.
But there is a way.
He just... needs to talk it out with Suitcase and Balloon.
Tumblr media
That being said, thank you for reading this.

Different anon here! About your post about the owl house, just out of curiosity, how much do you think is forgivable due to how Disney screwed them over? I do agree, the arcs feel impatient and couldn’t dedicate the time to the middle of the arcs, but that’s also in part because of how Disney cut the show prematurely short and they were scrambling to tell the story.
No. Zero. Nada. Nothing. Jack Shit. How many more ways do I have to put this: The cancellation is NOT why the show has writing problems. The show has writing problems because the writers are bad storytellers who have no clue how to actually do plot. For just the most obvious, basic example, let's take the end of S1. Belos presents himself as the big bad. Eda, Lilith and King are almost killed because of him and Luz destroys the portal door to make sure his plans cannot come to fruition. By all means, the show is ready to start its story and Luz is ready to start facing off against the Emperor's Coven.
She won't until Hollow Mind. Now you might disagree with me on this because Shifting Tides has her face off against the Golden Guard, Escaping Palisman is Golden Guard and Kiki, Eclipse Lake is Kiki and you even have Terra showing up in Falls and Follies. What are the character's goals in those episodes? Hunter is a surprise villain in Shifting Tides while Luz was just looking for cash, in Hunting Palisman, the two literally had no clue about the other until Luz was accidentally abducted and fighting them is just saving the palisman, not standing up to the coven. In Eclipse Lake, the coven just happens to be here at the same time as Amity, Eda and King and in Falls and Follies, they aren't standing up to the coven... They're getting Eda's love interest back.
The idea of Belos being evil and of facing him AT ALL... Happens in Hollow Mind. And Luz brings it up right after Eda's old wild witch pal says no to fixing Luz's magical cloak. Which, you know... Has problems for WHY Luz is now deciding to yell in public about how evil Belos is.
Instead, that time is spent on Hunter, who really has a very minimal effect on the plot overall. Like... Besides giving screentime to Belos where we still aren't learning anything about him, his relevance is just very low. We also Lumity which NEVER has plot relevance and King gets a few episodes episodes but still not much despite easily being the most important character in hindsight as far as the plot goes. Raeda and angst about that is given at least half as much screentime though and the closest you can come to justifying that is the failed plan of the CATs.
If you REALLY need something not from S2, then just look at Amity. She was already 99% reformed by the time Adventure in the Elements happens, if not Lost in Language and those are her fourth and fifth major appearances. Worse yet, their treatment of Boscha and her friend group is effectively the EXACT same as how they treated Amity's parents. Just an obstacle to be blown aside for Lumity to happen. The flaws in how TOH is constructed from a basic level are there even in S1, it's just easier to ignore them because the show was willing to be fun back then.
None of this even gets into the Collector, who was explicitly chosen to be moved forward in their plans when the show was cancelled. Instead, you know... Not. Just not introducing a character you have NO TIME to do anything with.
Then there's the condemnation of S3's creative decisions. If they REALLY had a plan for all of this stuff, S3 should feel like it's constant payoffs without proper build up as they wrap up loose ends, deal with the threats that are unresolved, etc. like that. Instead, S3 is so desperate for ideas to fill its runtime that the finale starts with a 7 minute dream sequence that actively goes against the character arc, shit as it is, Luz went through during the time from Hollow Mind to Watching and Dreaming.
If the shortening could be used as a real excuse, you shouldn't have been able to cut 80% of S3... And lose nothing. TOH is not bad because of the shortening. It's bad because because the writers are bad storytellers. (Yes, this was technically asking about the arcs but I decided to focus on how they just wasted time in general, especially on characters or elements that didn't matter. I still stand by the idea that TOH either NEVER wanted to end or that it wanted five seasons to cram literally every idea it had into it. Shortening S3 doesn't change the flaws of either approach.

If there's one thing i don't like about this fandom it's how much they make the kids more meaner? Villainizing? Than they actually are. Don't get me wrong, they have done a lot of bad but like these characters are FRIENDS. They do genuinely care about eachother in the end they aren't cold hearted and revel in other's suffering, they aren't Caliborn or Vriska afterall. I think they read the comic wrong, the kids were willing to sacrifice their own lives for eachother, a prime example of this was Daves conversation with doomed Rose. I blame the spaceship meteor part of the story for ruining the characters. Like everyone acted so ooc? Why were Jade and Davesprite giving John such a hard time about his dad die dying? Both of them literally had to watch their guardians die in front of them, you'd think they'd be the most sympathetic here? Or how Dave and Karkat, characters who will go through lengths to protect their friends just fucking stand there as everyone else tears themselves or eachother apart? Karkat is an ass yes but this was the same guy who was crying his heart out when he saw Solluxs dead body when in game or how he told Aradia bot that he would've tried to get her back to life if it weren't for other circumstances. Why was everyone being so uncaring at this part? It didn't feel right. The alpha kids got it the WORST, from bad writing to fandom treatment. I remember back in the day seeing stuff where Dirk was just down right mean to Jane "hahaha sucks to be you Jake is mine fat bitch". There was even a little bit of this aggressiveness in House of Dirk, now i do find that story fun but the small part where he calls Jane "xenophobic", bothered me. Like he would NOT say that to her. Have you seen how he speaks to her? "If you ever need help, Jane. If you're ever in any trouble at all. Let me know. Just say the word." Same guy who built a robot to protect her life and pretty much wrote an entire book for her, i think Dirk cares about Jane guys. This fandom and comic is so mean to Jane, as funny as i thought it was that Caliborn called her a fat fucking pig and cow, she really just became a punching box at that point. They'll shit on her because she's a woman getting in the way of the gay men. The ONLY thing people get from her as a character is that she's fat, because Caliborn said so along with a bunch of other things. Jake, poor Jake, gets sexualized by everyone he knows and had to burn his Grandmothers body right in front of him. But according to fans HE'S the asshole here because he cant communicate properly. Gee i wonder why. Roxy gets put on a fucking pedestal by the comic and fans, super extra special treatment. Ignore how she sexually harasses Dirk or almost killed Jane, no she's incapable of doing wrong, isn't that right Calliope? Yes, Roxy should be the new leader AND kill the Condescension yes. Now i never finished reading the epilogues because why would i? I'm probably missing a lot if we're taking them into consideration but not taking it into consideration because my point still stands because thats how the fandom treated them even before those came out. And even when talking about the base comic i still see those attitudes.
These characters DO have their personal problems but when people talk about they insert angst where it doesn't exist for favor of projection and i hate how common its become.
If people claim it is just cynicism that comes with growing up, there's clearly a difference between being cynicism, nihilism, and being a straight up asshole. If people say it is Dave and Karkat's depression is the reason why they stand around doing nothing as Rose becomes alcoholic and Terezi gets abused by Gamzee, it's sure strange they got over their depression right as VRISKA comes in to solve everything and those two bastards act like nothing had happened. Everything by Act 6 and Post Retcon just made all the characters worse. They have become an empty shell of who they used to be. The bleak outlook has become a theme for current Homestuck. It's been like this for Epilogues and Homestuck^2 too. I don't know if James Roach and HICU can really save the franchise and get out of all the characters having this negative light. Andrew Hussie and WhatPumpkin has shoved this jaded feeling right in the audience's faces that it's become the norm to expect the worse. Readers expect characters being assholes and more depression, they will receive it because Hussie and WhatPumpkin made it so.

FIRST AT ALL I'M SO HAPPY WITH KYUNGSOO FREEDOM
All dananies are saying that they were right when they said that Kyungsoo was leaving the company and exol (not all of them) were wrong when saying that it was because Kyungsoo didn't want to have promotions (you already talked about that topic here), and they compare it with the treatment the other members have had (tbh if there has been a difference), I suppose they still want to see Soo without exo when is SM fault, i mean, Baek did the same as Soo now, and just like the other members according to ddnies, he had the "properly promotions"... either way exo remains in WE ARE ONE.
I know most of crazy dandans ( the crazy ones not all but the Akgaes) are gonna hate me for that but I don't like them anyways. So I'm not here to impress anyone.
Seriously when Ksoo broke off from his Silent Introvert character and WANTED HIMSELF FROM HIS OWN HEART TO CHANGE, HE DID! When he wanted to explore the world more bcz he found out he missed out on a lot of fun stuff he should have done during his early 20s but never tried bcz he was so shy and traumatized from the Starship and fans and sasaengs..when he learned that not all fans are bad and that some really are nice and love him.. and when he finally learnt that it's not that hard to do an Aegyo and that it won't make him any less of a manly man! And when he learnt that his very chill introverted complex Mysterious character he was adopting bcz SM told him so so that he would be liked by Movie producers bcz they like the mature mysterious charismatic image of idols instead of funny fun talkative flower boys,.. When he learnt to enjoy himself and try new things and go more on variety shows,
He did it..
SM let him, they never stopped him and you can see how he changed. Even his dress style went from boring grandpa style to Sexy Zaddy. I feel like he regretted being too serious and shy in his best ages of his life aka the 20s and he found out he messed out on a lot of fun things that he should've done longtime but now it ain't the age for it because somehow this is the age he's supposed to be more mature and calm he kinda flipped it out , but good he finally discovered this fun sexy non shy daring funny side of himself on camera, and he worked a lot on his persona and his stage and variety show entertainer presence, and he found out people liked him for that! He got more recognition and people just started to get to know him and he gained more fans, and guess what?? HE LIKED IT!
It's when HE WANTED to change that HE CHANGED. You can see that part of him not appearing on any variety shows or promotions was somehow also his decision or character, now that he asked for Variety shows and solo Albums and Promotions...He got it 💁🏻 Did anyone stop him?
But again of course SM also played a huge role in this. But he's one of SM's favorites just like Baek, and for the favorites they don't sabotage them ! They "TAME" them unfortunately that's the term they use. But for the ones they don't care about such as Chanyeol or Jongdae they sabotaged them by spreading false 10 girlfriends Cheating scandals and letting fans boycott Jongdae in front of SM and boycott his activities and promotions and forcing Jongdae to go enlist without doing anything to protect him. You should get the difference, if Ksoo or Ji or Baek ask for promotions albums projects etc.. they'll get it NOT EASILY though! But easier than the other members. So that's the small difference so once he wanted to be on shows and have actual promotions he got them. And you can see it.
For Ksoo they wanted him to be Mysterious they built him a persona and an Aura he was supposed to stick by it but what they didn't know is that he can't do that forever duh?!
At the End of the Day : Fuck SM.

Facts and Junk for the Ghostly Pokémon au
Because making character designs and stuff for about 8 gym leaders plus Danny and co. are understandly taking later than expected.
The Amity region is well known for its phenomenon with shiny Pokémon frequencies being higher than any other region to date. It’s high for all types except for ghost types of which hold a significant meaning to the folklore of this region. As the stories tell, those shiny ghost type Pokémon are considered to be the reincarnations of previous loved one and ancestors that actively search for their descendants that have become trainers in order to protect and help them achieve their dreams through their journeys.
Those of note with shiny ghost types on their teams are Danny, Tucker, Sam, Valerie, the gym leaders, elite four and other side characters of note I won’t reveal just yet.
Due to the shiny phenomenon, this has obviously made the region a popular target for Pokémon poachers, and other illegal gang activities to visit, displace or destroy the environment these Pokémon reside in to make bank.
As a result, entry for any outside trainers and tourists is limited and extremely difficult to receive due to the extensive rules enforced by Amity’s game wardens and guys in white. Secondly, the severity of Pokémon attacks and frequency of mass outbreaks in this region are also tied to the security of this region being so tight as this region is very dangerous for newcomers who have not been raised and taught how to deal with this environment.
To improve safety precautions and travel between cities, the Amity region has massive national parks built near each major city or town that’s overlooked by the game wardens and park rangers. Trainers are able to transverse as they please but off the trail areas are off-limits unless the trainer has ranger status or earned the equivalent with earning all the gym badges or receiving the required number of bounties that are enforced by their boards in each park.
Danny’s Ace partner is a shiny Mimikyu he named Phantom or Spooky. He’s had him before he started his journey at age 13 after his parents’ strange machine of which would harness the power of space time distortion portals which naturally occur in their region popped this little guy out. Since he felt bad for displacing Mimikyu from its place, he promised to do the means necessary to return it back to its home. (But in the end Danny realizes he gave Mimikyu its home here with him than to his previous trainer in the future *wink* *wink*).
The most popular gym leader is Ember in the region. Her concerts are always sold out in her city and getting past her in the gym leader test takes forever to schedule.
There’s actually a former monarchy that is in charge of the elite four isle and grounds for the area. These people are Dorathea and Aragon but also the champion, Godric Pariah, who are the last of the royal dragon trainer lineage.
Clockwork is the professor you meet in your journey but is unknowingly the past champion of the region years back. He collaborates with the Fentons in their ghost Pokémon studies and their connection to the recent frequency of the space time distortion events and sleeplessness among the region’s Pokémon as of late.
The enemy/antagonists of this series is Team Nocturnal. The group has a front through a company of which helps trainers treat the recent sleeplessness issue that’s been affecting Pokémon and now people too. Supposedly, the success rate for treatments have been high but the frequency of previous patients coming back to the facility is oddly high despite it. The CEO of the company hasn’t commented on the success but rather insists that routine treatment is what helps prevent a relapse into the sleeplessness disorder.
Another gang you could run into in the region is team Shadow. A biker gang ran by Johnny 13, and Kitty which travels throughout the cities to cause havoc and fun whenever they feel like it. Oddly, they are more benevolent than aggressive with their actions. Usually, helping trainers through government roadblocks set by the national parks or giving them items to heal Pokémon’s status conditions and such. Despite this, they’re often the headache for the head game warden who has struggled to bring them to justice. The team gets their name because of Johnny’s Gengar, Shadow, who is their mascot next to Kitty’s smoochum.
The alliance with Team Shadow is one of several ways trainers can proceed to all park areas without having all badges in tow or escorts. Another is through collecting bounties and earning a ranger rank through the national parks’ system that allows trainers to help conservation and protection of the ecosystem under the surveillance of the park rangers. It’s a faster but more dangerous route to gain full access to the areas. Though, those who take this path eventually become park rangers in the future.

I know I always make posts like this, but in light of the fnaf movie I want to give my take on it again. Mild spoilers, mostly for Afton's characterization, but not too much.
I've seen a lot of people either excited that Afton is finally "scary," that he's just a serial killer, tons of "He just kills for fun, he doesn't need a motive!" etc. etc. or disappointed that he feels a little two-dimensional. I totally agree that a serial killer in a horror movie doesn't need a lot of backstory, but FNAF's angle was always intriguing to me, or at least my interpretation of what we were seeing.
See, I'm never going to have to run from an animatronic. Dead kids possessing these critters are never going to come after me. I'm safe. At the end of the day, that's not a threat I have to worry about, so it's easy for me to just set it aside.
But the thing with fnaf is they're not the bad guys, not really. They're trying to stop a serial killer, but they can't remember who he was. The serial killer, the purple guy, William Afton is the villain of the story.
His victims don't run. They willingly go with him, hand in hand, to their deaths. William Afton, specifically, isn't a threat irl, but that guy you knew in school? You know, the one everyone liked, but a few people accused him of some messed up stuff? He couldn't have done that, obviously. I mean, you've known him this entire time! He's your friend, he's not that kind of guy, he's a good ol' boy, they're just jealous. They're making up stuff. And if he gets accused later, as an adult, well, look at how many people will testify to his character. He was always such a nice boy, he couldn't have done all that.
That's what was scary about William Afton. He was the killer that no one would believe, even if he told them to their face. His victims wouldn't run, because they'd never expect him to be a threat. They trust him. How many people do I trust like that? Who would I refuse to believe is a bad person, no matter how many people come forwards? How many times have we seen celebrities get that treatment?
And that's what it boils down to. William Afton is scary, because he's real.

On wasted years of teenage girls and what's beyond them:
A Sakura Haruno quick character study.
⠀Ignoring Kishimoto's possible implications or even his intentions for the character, I think one of the coolest facts about Sakura is that she wasted so many of her Academy years in superficial stuff.
And you'd say: “How is that good? Or cool?”
Listen, most 12 years old have their lives figured out. They don't have a clear path to follow, they haven't lived a traumatic experience that altered completely their core and the paths they'd follow for the rest of their lives. They don't attach their personal growth or maturity process to stuff like revenge or proving to my homeplace that I, a 12 years old kid, deserve basic human treatment.
There are kids like that, of course. Kids like Naruto and Sasuke, like Neji and Rock Lee, like Itachi and Kakashi and so many other kids that worked hard for years to become strong in their system 'cause they knew what they wanted, needed even.
But pre-teen girls with a relatively normal life?
⠀You mean to tell me it's not common for them to fall prey of the social obsession over physical appearance? Specially little girls who were bullied for not being up to the standard, girls who crave attention from someone well-liked or popular because that would make them worthy or visible to the others. The reason they are so many books and movies and stories about how awful is to be a teenage girl, is not for fun. The expectations are crushing: from your parents, from society, from the people at power even.
And if you were one of this girls, only to wake up one day after a reality check, let me tell you it hits you so, so hard. You'd obsess over the lost time, terrified it's too late, you'll never be able to catch up with the others. You fell into the trap and now it's game over. Except is not, but no one will ever stop reminding you of that mistake you made.
Even if it was on a period of your life when things were changing so fast you could barely follow the flow of it all. Your body was changing, hormones betraying you. You were expected to be sincere but not overly vulnerable and be pretty but not superficial and be joyful but not annoying and be quiet but not utterly submissive and— you get it.
⠀My favorite part is that Sakura, a late bloomer, never gave up on herself. For all the people who wasted years of their life caring so much about things that didn't matter at all in the end, Sakura is good representation of what it feels to try and recover. Honey, you can still achieve your dream. Stop beating yourself up, stop destroying yourself over mistake you knew because you didn't know better. You know better now, don't you?
It's not gonna be easy, but you can still work for it, go for it, train for it, you can change. Humans are allowed to change. If you had a slow start, if you found your purpose years after you were expected too, if you find it hard to understand what to do or even understand yourself, if you crumbled under the pressure, if you weren't as strong willed or if you didn't have it as bad as others, breath, it's okay, don't punish yourself any further.
⠀And it brings me to the question of why do we confuse obsession with passion. Why do we turn innocent actions into something with ill intentions?
Naruto was passionate about being Hokage the same way Sasuke was passionate about revenge. Sasuke's thing wasn't negative before Orochimaru put in his head that he was wasting time. Sakura was passionate about getting recognition from Sasuke at first, which is not so different from Naruto wanting recognition from the village or Sasuke wanting his brother to acknowledge him.
And it was not until the Forest of Death that she realized she doesn't want recognition of that type anymore. That's the symbolism behind her cutting her hair. She wants Naruto and Sasuke to see her as someone they can truly trust in, as an equal not in terms of power, but as reliable teammates. There she shows that she has grown to the point she cares about them both, about what both of them think of her, about their well-being and approval as her friends. She's done wasting time, and even when we see she's every inch as weak as she was before, what changes is her actitud.
⠀If you read her interactions with this in mind, it makes more sense.
In the beginning of the Chunnin Exams, Kakashi makes sure she will participate for herself and not her teammates. She does. And Kakashi's worries are confirmed twice, when she almost raised her hand after the writing exam because she was concerned about Naruto and when she almost raised her hand after the Forest of Death, because she was concerned about Sasuke. She wanted to be there but she was willing to give it up if it was to protect her teammates dreams or well-being.
She tries to stop Sasuke from leaving the village because that's her first big loss. That's her first time facing a tragedy. It is traumatic, just not so big when compared to her team experiences. But she just realized how much they mean to her and how much she wants to be better for them and now it's over, too late, too late, too late.
She asks Naruto to retrieve Sasuke because she does know she was weak, she wasted her time, she should be better. And when Naruto comes back so beaten, she swears next time she will be able to go with him. At least strong enough to be considered to go on the mission, to be considered useful enough, skillful enough.
Her reason to train with Tsunade is because she wants to be capable of resisting the conditions of a fight. Being a medic nin made her irreplaceable, being a combat medic nin gave her the freedom of following her team around and withstanding more than the common medic nin.
She fights Sasori and learns mid-fight to deal with him without Chiyo'd help, all not just for Gaara, but for a clue of Sasuke's whereabouts. And she got it. In that sense, she reached her goal in that moment. She proved she had it in her.
⠀From there on, it was a struggle. Almost every decision she made, it was thinking of how she could help or what was (wrongly assumed) her responsibility to her team.
She confessed to Naruto her fake love because she believed it was her responsibility, when it was not. Naruto's feelings were their own, his promise to take Sasuke back to Konoha maybe started with her, but became his own quickly. She didn't have to lie to him and to herself in order to fix only temporally a situation that would get out of their hands anyway. Was it something awful to do? Yes. Was she wrong? Yes. Should it be excused? No. But there is a reason to her actions.
She tried to kill Sasuke because she thought she had a responsibility to him as her teammate (to stop him from descending more into darkness), to Naruto as her teammate and friends (to spare him of the hurt of being the one to kill Sasuke) and to Konoha and the shinobi world (to stop his acts, to put at end to the madness).
When she jumps to their side at war and says she has finally reach them, she means this, the fact she has a reason to stand beside them even if it's not in power or fighting skills. Her invocation is as useful as theirs, she's the best medic nin available so she needs to go with them, even if only for a second or even if only on one thing, she can still do something for them. Let it be keeping Naruto's heart beating, or giving Obito chakra to keep his Mangekyou running longer to find Sasuke, or hit Kaguya in the head so Naruto and Sasuke can seal her.
She even says it. If with her life she can help them at least a little, if she can change things to their favor at least a little, if she can heal them at least a little, she'd be satisfied with that.
⠀Isn't it amazing that the girl who wasted her Academy years in being pretty and spend years upon years trying to be accepted by society, a girl so weak and helpless, became a woman capable of helping so many people. Someone strong and reliable, top on her field, compared to the best of the kunoichis. She didn't know what she wanted in life at 12 years old (she rambled nonsense when Kakashi asked), but when she finally figured out, she didn't stop until achieving it.
And I think that's good, right there. I don't like how the story execute this concept, I don't like how certain things were portrayed, but it makes sense when you consider her core as a character.
I love her going from true zero, (just knowledge, stuff anyone could adquire with proper studying), to the top. I love that she had a bad beginning, that she was annoying and naive and ignorant, that she had so much room for growth and she did grow into it. Kishimoto's writing aside, I'll give him this: Sakura is a needed character in the plot and he gave her the necessity for being a great character. He just,,,,, well, like he said it himself, he struggled a lot with her, writing her, portraying her properly. And it'll forever show.

Finally got to read issue 140! I gotta say, I'm confused and disappointed with what's happening to Raph. He's not really my favorite but the treatment he's getting is unfair. Once he said his dream was to become a farmer, and now he's offered the opportunity, he reacts like he was asked to kill his family! And Alopex sure is suffering from tunnel vision because she was NOT abandoned, SHE abandoned the clan out of fear/frustration. I can't believe she's poisoning the kids' minds like that.
As for Casey being missing... I feel like the writers exhausted their possibilities with him and that's sad. He and Raph used to be tight, like brothers, and with him gone... couldn't they have made him a cop, perhaps? Give Casey another purpose? Or is he off to find IDW Gabriella, adopt her child, and that's how we get Shadow in this universe?
At least now we know Bob's motivation for his betrayal, he just wants to be normal. And frankly, if going back in time brings Splinter back (because let's face it, the guys need guidance), then let Armaggon consume this timeline and end this madness.
Other than that, I'm hopeful the comics will have a sort of happy ending and don't get the Mirage treatment.
People make bad decisions and behave badly sometimes, especially teenagers. I'm not condoning Raph and Alopex's behavior but it's fun to explore characters acting like little shits sometimes, and just think about what they've gone through up to this point, honestly I feel like they should be BIGGER assholes than how I'm writing them.
I'm actually kinda surprised by how some readers are reacting to what I've been doing with Alopex. Like I know everyone wants her and Raph to be together and I get that but I keep saying to imagine things from her perspective; imagine your loved ones teaming up with the guy who killed your family, burned your house down, and brainwashed you, gaslit you, and abused you. Regardless of why your loved ones teamed up with this guy, sure maybe it was dire circumstances and they felt they had no choice, but to you, you'd still want them to refuse the team-up, you'd want desperately for them to make a different choice and find another way to solve the problem than immediately giving in and allying themselves with your abuser. Maybe that's shortsighted of Alopex since the fate of the world was on the line, but when I was writing that stuff I just couldn't justify it that Alopex wouldn't feel utterly betrayed and blow up at the Turtles and take a scorched earth approach, at least at first. Maybe she'll come around eventually, it hasn't been that long, maybe she'll cool off and forgive the Turtles and they can reconcile eventually, but right now she DOES feel abandoned. I would feel abandoned and betrayed in her shoes.
The Raph farmer thing: I haven't forgotten about that, but he's not just going to run off and become a farmer at this point, he's ticked off at Alopex and he's hurting and exhausted. He's sticking around because of Alopex. I think if Raph believed that Alopex was a lost cause then yeah he'd probably go off to Northampton and start a big farm there and figure out a business model for selling produce to the locals or something, but he's not at that point yet. He's frustrated and lashing out without direction as Raph is wont to do.
The Casey thing I'm frustrated about, too, that was a thing from the powers-that-be and he was shuffled off in Armageddon Game #8 (which isn't out yet and which takes place before #140). He's not missing, it'll explain it in AG #8. I had a whole big storyline with Casey I wanted to do where he goes out west to find himself and hunt monsters and meets Shadow, and Raph eventually goes out there to find him and they have their own adventures out there. Casey is probably my favorite TMNT character and I'd been trying to make him more grizzled and "hard" like his Mirage counterpart and I think I was able to do that a little bit but the rest of what I had planned for him was unfortunately not to be. Maybe down the road, who knows. Anyway, I share your frustration on that point.

Defending Mammon ☆
listen- so i was playing obey me and i was thinking about how much Mammon get’s slandered on and i was like “I wonder how he would feel about that if it was real life”, just getting called all this stuff by his own brothers and such- i know it’s not as serious in the game as i’m gonna make it sound in this writing, but i thought it’d be a fun topic so here i am 🤭
Without further ado, This is also my first real writing, i hope everyone enjoys it >:) no real warnings except for some fighting between the brothers, name calling, nothing too serious! Overall happy ending 🫶🏻
Characters: gn!reader, Mammon, The demon bro’s ofc
Fandom: Obey Me!
Tumblr media
Since the first day you woke up in the devildom, everyday has been — well, let’s just say you’ve experienced more in a few months than the average human does in… years.
Constant arguments, fights, endless homework, tasks given to you to complete from Lucifer himself, more arguments, telling a grown, nearly 6 ft tall demon man to get away from the fridge and go to bed at 3am- it’s exhausting work.
You can say you try your best to mend all the problems each brother has, without completely getting into everyone’s business which ultimately failed badly. Just doing all you can to grow closer with the 7 demons.
There is a certain demon you’ve actually grown quite close to though. Mammon! The target for all ill-talk amongst the brothers. Getting called “scumbag”, “moron”, “idiot”, “self-centered tsundere”, the list goes on, and you’ve heard all the insults in the book.
You’d be lying if you said it didn’t make you feel a little bad for Mammon when he does something dumb and get’s slandered for it. But he usually always has some sort of comback or just disregards whatever they say, so you don’t contemplate about it too much.
It seems as though he’s used to this treatment, never really getting sad over it, only ever annoyed since it constantly happens, but it’s clearly nothing too serious, you thought to yourself. At least thats what you figured, he was “THE Great Mammon” after all, why would some puny insults get to such a powerful immortal like him?
He seemed a bit off the past few days, though. He didn’t barge in your room as soon as morning came, to wake you up for breakfast and to get ready for class, he was still somewhat his usual self, raving to you about his thoughts of how to make more money, complaining about how boring Lucifer’s or Diavolo’s lectures and meetings are, the usual. He hardly paid any attention to his brothers whenever they spoke to him, barely acknowledging them.
It started off with Beel, asking him to help make breakfast for everyone since it was his turn to cook and he wanted to get it done before Lucifer woke up and classes started, but Mammon ignored his request and continued on with the conversation he was having with you. Beel shook his head without bothering with him. You thought it was really unlike Mammon, but regardless, you didn’t intervene.
And that’s how the whole day so far went. And as the brothers recognized his behavior, they were getting fed up with it. So here everyone was, in the lounge/study area, minding their business for now, but more was bound to happen.
You and Mammon had been sitting on couch doing some homework and talking all about one of his modeling experiences when everyones heads turned to the stairway, as a shout echoed into the room, it was Levi’s voice, of course yelling Mammons name. It wasn’t long before Levi was stomping down the stairs, you could see he was holding what seemed to be a wallet, though it was opened and empty.
“DID YOU REALLY TAKE ALL OF THE MONEY INSIDE THIS WALLET?!” Levi yelled, walking closer towards both you and Mammon. You looked at him, seeing his lips part, as if he was going to say something but nothing came out. All of the brothers just quieted down and watched the scene.
“Well?? You’re the only one who could be dumb enough to go through someone’s room!” He claimed, holding the wallet with a fist.
You were about to try calming Leviathan, but before you could say anything, Mammon finally spoke out.
“W-well it was when ya told me i could take some cash-! Y’know, for the ring i wanted..! Listen Levi, i-i said i’d pay ya back, i’m not in the mood right now to be-“ Mammon was cut off by the angry demon in front of us.
“You’re not in the mood? Well neither am I! I told you i’d give you some cash, this was a wallet that was hidden from you for a reason, and now it’s empty! How’d you even find this?? I guess you really are such a greedy dumbass to steal from your own brother!” He shouted once again, making everyone look at Mammon with disappointed eyes.
“Mammon. How much did you take for Levi to be this fumed?” Satan suddenly intervened, looking at him as he rested the book he had been reading on his lap. Mammon scoffed and glanced at you for a split second, only to look away at a random wall. “I-it was just like.. 100 grimm or something..” he mumbled, though everyone could hear.
It felt like you could hear everyone in the room sigh, Seeing Asmo roll his eyes and go back to maintaining his nails as if he didn’t care about just another dumb fight of his older brothers.
“HAH! You’re real good at making jokes, you know that?? Try 2,000 grimm! I had exactly 2,031 grimm in here!! And its all gone! you’re such an idiot, Mammon- words can’t even explain how mad I am. You get your greedy hands on EVERYTHING the second you get a chance to, without any regard for anyone else! But stealing THAT much money?? From me?? You really thought i wouldn’t notice?? I was saving up for a gift for everyone here so we could enjoy it as a family but you ruined that! I seriously can’t stand you.”
Everyone just stared at Leviathan as he ranted on and on, shocked at his words that came out so harshly.
And so the insults rolled in.
“Seriously Mammon? You’re gonna lie and say 100 grimm when it was actually that much? So stupid.”
“I doubt you’re even gonna give it back. Or pay him back, nonetheless.”
“You always do this. Why can’t you just learn already? We get you’re the sin of greed but why can’t you just earn money like everyone else??”
“Don’t expect me to help out this time when Lucifer ties you up to the ceiling.”
“All this shouting is making me too hungry…” (pls beel would say this, can’t prove me wrong 😭)
Mammon just clenched his jaw and rested his head on his hand. He wasn’t arguing back or standing up for himself like usual or even making a joke out of it, he just sat there at took it all. While you don’t agree with what he did, he didn’t deserve to have such demeaning things said to him. He made a stupid mistake, but who’s to say he really won’t do it again?
After a few minutes of all his brothers scolding him, you just looked at Mammon, seeing how his eyes were coated with a glossy look. Was he really on the verge of crying? You knew he was sensitive when it came to stuff that scared him, or sad movies, but you’ve never actually seen him almost cry.. and it broke your heart.
“Guys, stop! All this yelling is giving me a headache.” You said, not too loudly but clear enough for everyone to hear over each other’s voices, and the room did infact quiet down once again. Mammon just looked over at you, his expression was soft, but you could tell he was surprised.
“Do you all think this constant scolding and arguing doesn’t affect him?? Yes, he shouldn’t have touched the money that didn’t belong to him, but how can you guys sit here and call him “stupid”, and “dumbass”, as if he’s supposed to just shrug it off later?? You all act like you’re perfect when everyone in this room has their flaws and faults, so i’m done hearing this constant “let’s make Mammon the bad guy” here, because he’s not! He took some money that can be replaced. Levi, you should know that Mammon is now sorry for taking the money, but you can just work a bit more or make money online like you usually do, can’t you? You all only have one brother like Mammon, and I know you all love him despite the things he does, so why can’t you just cut him some slack sometimes??”
You huffed after practically saying everything you wanted in a short few breaths, seeing everyones expressions turn to shock. Once again, you got into everyone’s business, like this argument that had nothing to concern you with, but it needed to be done. Mammon was someone who was close to you and you cared about him, even if he did things you wouldn’t agree with.
Mammon just looked at you with eyes that were more teary than before and blushed furiously before looking down at his lap. No one knew what to say, this was the first time their sweet human had snapped like this, getting in between their fight. As everyone sat there in silence, you contemplated on if you should have just kept your mouth shut.
“I’m.. sorry, i just couldn’t sit here while you all called someone important to me such things..” you murmured.
“Are you kidding? You just ended a whole falling-out between Levi and Mammon- who never shut up, with just words! Are you sure you don’t have some magic in you?? Honestly.. it was quite attractive~ having you scold us like that~” Asmo stated, his tone sounding astonished, though adding a little giggle at the end.
“Yeah.. usually lucifer has to get in the middle of things by punishing one of them.. clearly he’s been doing things wrong this whole time.” Belphie stated.
“More importantly.. you really- stood up for me?” Mammon uttered out, having everyones attention turned towards him once again.
“Well.. yeah, like I said. I’m done with the arguing..”
“MCCCC!!~ I can’t believe you said such adorable things about meeee.. i might really cryyy…” your whole body suddenly jolted from the force of Mammon throwing his arms around you completely, his head rested on your shoulder as he happily sobbed.
Whattt is happening.
“Just because mc was here to defend you this time doesn’t make what you did okay. You better work to pay Leviathan back. Every single 2,031 grimm. Or we’ll tell Lucifer about all this and have him exterminate your precious credit card.” Satan said with a familiar stern voice, similar to Lucifers lecturing tone.
But not once did Mammon move his head from your shoulder, you just chuckled and patted his back softly.
“I think he understands.” You told Satan.
“Good. Let’s get food from Hell’s Kitchen now, i’m starving” Beel smiled, as all of us gave him a “we literally just ate dinner an hour ago..” look.
~
Later that night, Mammon lightly tapped your bedroom door that was half open, not wanting to be loud incase you were asleep, but you were infact awake. You sat up from your bed and turned on your lamp, giving him a faint smile as you rubbed your eyes to adjust to the light.
“What’s up, Mam’s?”
“Uh.. I wanted to thank ya for earlier.. i don’t think many people would stand up for someone like me or for what I did so.. hearing that I’m someone important to you really made me happy.. happier than I think i’ve ever been.” He said, looking away from you, knowing that he was flustered beyond belief.
“Of course, but you ever pull something like that again, and i’ll scold you myself. And i don’t take theft lightly, got that? You really hurt Leviathan.” You said, patting the spot right next to you on your bed, letting Mammon sit down beside you.
And so, you both ended the day laying next to each other, talking and laughing until the middle of the night and the time came around to cuddle up and fall asleep.

stranger things dream demon au ✨
so uh in this world all the stranger things ppl who are of legal age to get down with are sex demons. yay! but that means you have to be 18+ to look at this bc sexy stuff.
sorry 💋
characters: robin, jonathan, steve, eddie, nancy warnings: might be shades of fem!reader and oc!reader but this is largely just basic fun worldbuildy stuff. might get a bit suggestive.
okay so!
they’re not all true demony-demons in that they want your soul and/or are trying to corrupt you, most of them are just creatures that subsist on sexual energy. they live outside of regular reality in a place that humans can sometimes access when they dream. some rare humans are dream walkers, who can travel there freely.
all the demons have the same baseline powers: when they are physically touching you, they can hear or feel your thoughts. they can put magic in their voice to soothe you into a hypnotic state. they can pass for completely human, but they have inhuman forms/traits that are unique to them. they all have demon magic and can perform spells in their language (that their names/ritual summons are in) and it manifests visually in different ways, but they’ve all got unique supernatural abilities too. they can teleport, but they have to be invited to the human world by a summons. one summons is enough to consider a demon invited—after that, they can come to you if they want (you are their access point to the human world), and you have to specifically banish them again if you don’t want to see them anymore. most demons don’t take advantage of this.
just to get it out of the way—billy basically only exists in this universe as an example of a “bad” demon. i just don’t like him, so he doesn’t get the full treatment. (you know, name, ritual ingredients, powers, interesting tidbits, etc)
robin’s name is blunt-sounding but sweet, with a tricky staccato cadence that almost always ends in giggles because of how it tickles the throat, and hearing it tends to leave your fingertips tingling, or your feet tapping restlessly. her ritual is best performed with a bit of milk chocolate melting on your tongue, and involves burning tea bags and candied lemon peels. she’s a good listener and that comes out in her powers—telepathy, even over distances, a complete mastery of languages, being able to tell when you’re lying, an ability to hear through what you’re saying to what’s really bothering you. anyone sharing her recipe will also share that she has a love of m&ms and brews the best coffee in the known universe.
jonathan’s ritual is a little more involved. he wants you to burn a picture of something, preferably a photo you took, over a handful of your favorite sweet-smelling herbs. if you include a little, uh, special herbs, all the better. his name is more forgiving than others’, mumbled and low, and it leaves your lips and tongue feeling a little sticky and sweet with the taste of maple, and your ears feeling warm like someone has gently cupped them for a couple seconds. with his powers, he can get pictures of anything he wants, even if a photo should have been impossible to take or develop. he has an ability to see right through you, and because it’s in his nature to be nurturing he can pinpoint the exact things you need to feel taken care of. he likes to make an entrance sometimes by making your radio turn on by itself before he appears.
the proper way to call steve would involve a few candles, cinnamon sticks, and flower petals in a circle around you. his name is a bit tricky like robins, sharper, and makes your nose tingle and your ears ring, but it tastes sweet and tart on the tongue when you can get it right, like the burst of fresh berries. his powers are mainly connected to the heart—he’s very, very empathetic and he’ll hear what your heart is crying out to say even when you could never verbalize it, and he has the ability to project feelings to try to offer you comfort. steve has been resisting being summoned for a little while now because he was assaulted the last time he answered a summons, though robin warned him that the day would come where he wouldn’t be able to resist anymore.
eddie’s the most elaborate, both in ritual and name. his name is a tongue twister, forcing you to smile and stick your tongue out at points to get the correct pronunciation, and both saying it and hearing it make you feel the slightest bit lightheaded (as though you’ve just been headbanging, perhaps). for his ritual, in addition to burning some tobacco and cardamom, you need to roll a die. any kind will do, though a d20 will make him especially happy, and how he behaves when he arrives depends on how well you rolled… (burning some special herbs gets you a +2 modifier) his powers are much showier than the others, telekinesis that allows him to move things around like a proper wizard, and he learns the most about your feelings through touch—both physically touching you, and feeling you out with his mind.
nancy’s name is short and sharp, like the crack of a gunshot, and it hits you in the chest with a kickback, leaving a coffee-and-almonds taste in the back of your throat. the spice blend you’re recommended to burn to summon her stings your throat something fierce, but it dissipates almost immediately on arrival because she smells of vanilla and something sweet and clean and floral, with just a hint of smoke underneath it. she's incredibly observant, but she has a very, very keen sense of smell and will be able to pick out your emotions and state of mind based on that, as well as a few other things... she uses her demon magic more freely than the others, performing more spells and rituals because she has the most expertise.

Dunno if somebody already came asking you this but, what do you really think about the graphics in Bayo3? They look very bland to me and somehow backtracked, even in the first preview trailer I was like "damn, this is not good". Look at Bayo2, a game from eight years ago, it still looking hella good and pretty, but Bayo3? Not even the hair moves or characters expression are giving that classic Bayonetta visuals. Honestly, for a rich company like Nintendo they should, y'know, gave more dedication on the graphics 💀(also, this is NOT a hate ask towards Bayo3, but comparing to the others two games in the franchise, this is the weakest in both graphics and gameplay)
Nope, actually so far noone talked about it! Yet! And yeah, I agree. Especially coming from someone who now used all three games on my pc by emulating them... Bayo3 is sooo rough. It's doesn't really holds up, even worse on handled mod. The way that wicked waves and wings look. At least it barely has fps problems like some other games (looks at smt5) or Astral Chain (that at least was running 30 fps only) so I guess sacrifices had to be made, so Bayo3 would run mostly 60fps. What also is so weird, not only Bayonetta 2 was literally made for WiiU which is even weaker system, but it runs perfectly on switch, in both handled and docked. And it looks fine in handled, unlike Bayo3 which cuts so many stuff. Thought If I had to guess porting already existing titles (bayo 1+2) is much easier than developing a game from the scratch on hardware? And switch isn't the easiet console to develop on, it's sure ain't no ps4/ps5/xbx1/xbxs and pc and etc. If to defend platinum somehow. But I think it's isn't just the graphic, it's just overall the artstyle (direction of artstyle?). Like, I get it, this game is departure for the series, but does it have to look so unisprised sometimes? So many empty space? Oh wow... destroyed Tokyo I guess. With roofs... REMEMBER WHEN WE WENT TO HELL???? Or visited ancient cities that looked unique and magic? Now we have anicent China and it's burning i guess :/ Oh look, there's an Egyptain lvl that contains three buildings and lots of sand to slide on, rocks and nothing else! Plus, yeah, the movement overall in cutscenes feels unnatural sometmes (my god did i felt so wrong when i saw how bayo1 bayo looks in bayo3 at the start and here i thought that bayo2 version of it was bad), and like Bayonetta cutscenes were always exgatarred, but this time it's not in a normal way? Again, the direction is all ovedr the place? Viola is overly animated, like her movement is so different from the rest of the cast, Bayonetta is mostly stiff I wouldn't say she feels as acrobatic or floaty. And like I said before, the script doesn't saves this mess either, you have this characters talk with each other but instead of having dialogue (hell it doesn't even need to be meaningful it can be just fun) they are like info-dumping or something (guess this also had to do with who's directing english adaptation this time around) To my suprise, I kind of disliked how Jeanne looked in the early trailers, but she actually looks fantastic (except the make up) and probably my favorite this time around. But her treatment is another story. And it's not even really Nintendo's fault, their current console has AND can handle beautiful games, I just think Platinum has quite massive ideas for action game and that requieres hardware that can handle and run it, switch isn't just build for that. Cause at the end of the day - it's handled system.
Plus, add to that, that currently it's quite common thing to go into more greedy / realistic style over the actual artstyle with a fun sense. I'll be forever mad that such good game as DMC5 got stuck in the most basic ass looking artstyle with scanned real people for characters and making it's locations and level design the most boring things ever in comparision to previous titles. Same goes for Baoy3.

Hey can you check out this new Netflix series called mismatched the second season mostly, it has a really lovely lesbian couple I would like to hear your opinion about them
Anon! I spent all of my free time yesterday bingeing the two seasons of this, lol, and I had never even heard of it before, so thank you!
But which couple is it that you like? I'm gonna first need to know which you mean, because I kind of have strong negative feelings about one of them! But could I be convinced... but I don't want to be!....?
I'm torn, I'm torn, because C (gonna try not to mention names and spoil things for people who haven't watched) does get SO much focus and both she and N are main characters, not leads, but like, pretty close to it, and they actually meet so very quickly, that's always a sign of writer commitment to me, how soon writers can get certain characters on screen and start their arc.
But the way she behaved at the end of s1, I'm still so mad. But then they really do delve into her internal conflict and and try to make her sympathetic and who in this show doesn't make mistakes, they're trying to get us be sympathetic for Simran and Krish... But C's mistake was SO huge and catastrophic, and the stuff she does is so hurtful and selfish, does it matter that she feels bad after? Well, yes, it does, and can I, a Quinn Fabray apologist, not forgive this...
But the thing is, A was just so much more fun and interesting... I liked A and N! And if there's no third season, that's where it ends, and I'm kind of happy to let them have their thing. :o
You tell me what you thought, anon! I probably wouldn't have been so quick to binge it but I've been in my desi media feels since Maja Ma. It's so interesting that I haven't heard "lesbian" in media in the past few years as much as I did in these two Indian works (excluding perhaps when people brought it up to say they weren't one). I don't know how much other people would enjoy it, I hear and acknowledge the criticisms, but it was interesting for me to see this very modern messy teen (well, college kids in this case) treatment of desi kids.

Unpopular opinions:
I think people who say that Sirius would pick or save Reg over James are crazy, I’m sorry 😭
Idk how unpopular this is but Remus would drive everyone else crazy by picking the longest, most pretentious prog rock ever for parties. Peter is the only one with good taste. James is tone deaf. Sirius is a complete poser who will pretend to be into bands he’s never heard.
I don’t think Reg has a big circle of close friends. I love the Skittles in AUs but they really don’t make sense to me in canon compliant stuff, especially if the writer is trying to push that none of them were into blood supremacy.
I really like Lily and Sirius in Jegulus fics: I feel like they’re given much more depth and complexity than they are in Jily/Wolfstar stuff.
People have a really hard time making Dorlene and Moonseeker interesting as actual dynamics I would like to read about and not aesthetic Twitter threads.
If James/Remus/Regulus ended up being a thing and I was Sirius, our friendship would be over. Especially if they kept it from me. Oh, wait… I’d get with Evan and Barty and then our friendship would be over. I am toxic and petty and a Sirius kin can you tell. Any fic where Sirius is cool with it is an unrealistic fic in my eyes. Jegulus and/or Moonseeker is already stretching it but both his best friends? Nah.
Actually leaping off from that, a lot of fics these days do a bad job establishing why James and/or Remus would care about Regulus and instantly be in love with him. Especially in universes where Sirius hates Reg and Reg/Reg’s friends hate Sirius. I feel like earlier Jegulus fics did a much better job before it became an assumed dynamic.
I don’t think you should be writing Regulus & Sirius dynamics in fics if you don’t have empathy for both and aren’t willing to show both of their POVs. A lot of times it comes across as victim blaming or really weird ideas about victims.
I will be back with more!
I disagree with that first one, mainly bc out of habit he'd jump to save him before thinking about the consequences and then realise after what he'd done
The second one is so true, I love Sirius so much but please the poser vibes are STRONG
I love lonely Reg 💀 I love the skittles as a big friend group but I sometimes miss the days where he was a lonely Emo boy or only friends with Pandora, those were the times.
Tbf I don't real jily or wolfstar so l just give a suppletive thumbs up 👍 I do love everything about Lily tho and Sirius is always good in Jegulus bc they can justify every single action he does and it feels more natural
Is this a bad time to mention the Dorlene longfic I'm writing...TO ANYBODY INTERESTED IT IS A ROYALTY AU WITH ENEMIES TO LOVERS AND ARRANGED MARRIAGE AS WELL AS KNIGHT!MARLENE AND PRINCESS!DORCAS, EVERYONE IS GAY AND THEY ARE BOTH DOWN BAD BUT IN DENIAL, it doesn't have a name yet 😞
Idk I think it depends if it's an au or not, in canon ABSOLUTELY NOT WE ARE NEVER SPEAKING AGAIN, but in some aus it makes more sense
I sort of get what you mean, I think it's become very accepted that James cares about Reg because of his large heart and he understands his abuse and manipulation but like...it's so accepted that it gets really rushed bc people just want to get to the fun bit (which like me too)
YES people who blame one of them, be it intentional or not, really annoy me bc it comes through in your writing, and I prefer Reg just as a character I write but THAT DOESN'T MEAN I BLAME SIRIUS FOR ALL THE SHIT THAT HAPPENED TO HIM it doesn't make for a cool plot point, it's just creepy. Honestly my whole page is on the treatment of the black family and dumbledore's ignorance towards it so I feel very strongly about this one, same goes for people who use Andy as a catalyst for Cissa to cry into Alice/Lucius/whoever's arms because they never treat her like an actual person
Anyway

Every (Canon) Fallout Game and DLC Ranked
of course, this is all my opinion. and i’m an idiot, so don’t put too much stock in it.
18. Operation Anchorage (1/10)
There’s just…nothing here. It’s a generic corridor with generic enemies and generic weapons. Your reward for completion is generic power armor, painted white. Hoorah.
17. Mothership Zeta (1.1/10)
Here’s a perfect example of a little joke from original fallout and ruin it. The Zetans were fine as a little random encounter, but canonizing them this much was a mistake. Plus the DLC itself gets old after about 5 minutes, which is a problem when it’s a 3 hour corridor with the exact same enemies. It ranks slightly above Operation Anchorage because I like 50s sci-fi b movies, and this reminds me of that.
16. Honest Hearts (2/10)
Mothership Zeta may have started the pattern of fallout games ruining their mysteries, but Honest Hearts perfected it. There was an incredible set-up - New Canaan, Joshua Graham, Ulysses’ Origin - all to be wasted on a somewhat-racist, white-savior, terribly-written narrative that falls flat in every single regard. This ranks above the other two because it has the Survivalist, which is interesting enough, and an absolutely stunning landscape. Not enough to keep it out of the bottom three though.
15. Broken Steel (3/10)
I hate this so much, on principle. It means one of two things about Fallout 3: either the developers cared about their birth-to-death story so little that they were willing to change the ending at the slightest bit of criticism, or they purposefully made the game so bad so that they could sell this stupid DLC for 10 extra dollars. At least it lets you play after the game.
14. Automatron (4/10)
Finally, something somewhat worth playing. I don’t love Automatron, hell I don’t even know if I like it, but there’s content here. The story with Isabel Cruz is entertaining and ultimately kind of sad, and the side characters like Jezebel and Ada provoke some emotion (mostly frustration in Jezebel’s case, but it’s welcome). Still, the gameplay is just so flat that it rips any enjoyment I might have out of a playthrough. I’ll speed run it if I want to give Codsworth some stupid legs or something, but otherwise I usually skip it.
13. Fallout 3 (5/10)
Oh, Fallout 3. Metacritic’s highest rated fallout game, but also one of the most divisive. I’d say there’s good reason for this - it all depends on what you focus on and prioritize. If you want to turn on the radio and wander the wastes, there is no better game. The post-apocalyptic atmosphere is on-point and the level scaling gives the game a kind of sandbox energy. On the other hand, the writing is shit, half the mechanics are shit, the villains are shit, the treatment of the Brotherhood is shit, and 99% of the characters are shit. It’s such a split that I only feel fair giving this the most medium rank possible - but against a series that I really love, it’s still gonna rank near the bottom.
12. Fallout 76 (6/10)
And we arrive at the game which everyone will say I’m wrong for putting here. I…like Fallout 76. It’s fun to play with friends, the mechanics are really well-made and the locations are engaging. But. It’s got the same problems as 3. The writing is, again, horrible. Every single faction just makes me go ‘Why is this here? What purpose does this serve?’ The Enclave, the Brotherhood, even new factions like the (so soft they’re morally defensible) raiders and the (essentially just the minutemen again) settlers all feel disarrayed and just feel so flat. It’s better then 3 in the way that I want to play it slightly more often.
11. Point Lookout (6.5/10)
One of two Fallout 3 properties I kinda like. The locations are really fun and the cult stuff is entertaining. It’s not the best, it’s not even the funniest, but it’s up there. It’s aggressively short and all the good stuff is side content, which is why it’s here instead of higher up.
10. Fallout 4 (7/10)
I adore this game, but this is where it belongs. I don’t care how fun it is - and holy hell is it fun - it’s so bogged down by its lack of anything better then surface-level. In plot, in character, in theme - it’s all easily discernible to a third grader within the first 10 minutes. Is that how games should be? Maybe, but that’s not what fallout is - or should be, at least in my opinion. Fallout is supposed to say something, and Fallout 4 falls just short of anything meaningful.
9. The Pitt (7.2/10)
Come at me, Fallout 3 fans. This DLC is right where it needs to be. Yes, it’s a good DLC, but it’s also two hours long. That’s just not long enough to justify anything higher then what it gets.
8. Nuka World (7.3/10)
Take everything I said about Fallout 4 and double it. Nuka World is 100% fluff, 0% meaning (much like Nuka Cola is 100% bad for you). But good God, it’s so fun. Even without the raider part, the different parks are really engaging and fun, and the little characters like Cito make it all the better. For evil nothings, look no further. Playing Nuka World is like eating a chocolate croissant from Starbucks - it’s good, and it’ll hold off your craving, and every once in a while you’ll get nostalgic and crave one, but there are better pastries, and better food - out there.
7. Lonesome Road (7.4)
I walk the lonesome road, the one that only ulysses can know… in all seriousness, this DLC is pretty great. The enemies aren’t anything special and the bomb effect look straight out of a $5 PS2 game, but that doesn’t matter. Ulysses is cool, cold, and sexy fascinating from a character perspective. I can’t say anything here that hasn’t already been said by smarter people, but I really like this.
6. Fallout (7.5/10)
sigh. Is it blasphemy to keep the first fallout game out of the top 5? Maybe. I don’t really care though. Look, the writing is good. Really good. The story is compelling and the factions are cool and engaging. But does this stop it from being horribly outdated and from having almost all flat characters? No. As much as I adore Fallout 1, it doesn’t deserve to be any higher.
5. Old World Blues (8/10)
Yeah, I put this above Fallout 1. It doesn’t matter. This DLC is so damn funny - even on my seventeenth playthrough, it makes me laugh ten times harder then any stand-up comedian. The jokes never stop coming and they never fall flat. There are moments of shocking sadness, which help ground the insane shenanigans, but it goes back to throwing so many jokes in your face that you end up with emotional whiplash in the best way possible - and all of this is based in a story of 6 super geniuses hyped up on drugs and your aunt’s insane facebook page.
4. Fallout 2 (8.5/10)
This game is good. I don’t know much else to say. Obviously it isn’t perfect - the ‘tribal’ and Shi elements are…ignorant at best, and the mechanics are outdated, but it stands the test of time much better than it’s predecessor. This game holds up - it’s insane, off-the-wall humor, it’s story about the dangers of fascism and an out-of-control government, it’s fun characters - these hold up, even in the face of horrifying graphics and an inability to run on anything more powerful than a literal potato (or as the in-game Dan Quayle parody spells it, Potatoe).
3. Fallout New Vegas (9/10)
Fine, you’ve all caught me. I’m a New Vegas fanboi. There’s obviously still issues in the game, part of which being the numerous game-breaking bugs that persist 12 years after release, but the story and characters and design and factions and gameplay and mechanics all stand proud, making this my favorite fallout game. But wait, if I’m a New Vegas fanboi, why is this only number 3?
2. Dead Money (9.5/10)
The last New Vegas DLC comes in at number 2. I love this DLC with all my heart. On first playthrough, the gameplay can be challenging and sometimes irritating, but it’s on the second playthrough that this DLC will hit you in the heart. The writing here is top-notch - better then 99% of books and movies I’ve ever seen. All the characters - whether they be pre-war memories or post-war interactions - all of them are incredible and unique. Sinclair, Keyes, Domino, Christine, Dog/God, The Scientists - all amazing. Play Dead Money - play it again (Johnny Guitar?) if you have to.
1. Far Harbor (9.8)
The best way I can describe this mostly-forgotten Fallout 4 DLC is through the song ‘My Kind of Town’ by Frank Sinatra. He sings ‘each time I leave [Far Harbor] it’s…tuggin’ on my sleeve.’ This is how I feel. Far Harbor is such an amazing gaming experience. It’s got the writing quality of New Vegas crossed with the best characters and mechanics Fallout 4 had to offer. While there’s always room for improvement, I cannot find a single major thing I don’t like in this DLC.
Here’s hoping Fallout 5 beats it all!

Glad someone else feels a bit disappointed by KJ Charles. The one book I really loved was “The Henchman of Zenda” (which I’d rec, it’s a lot of fun), but with all her other stuff I usually felt some variation of “interesting concept, but disappointing implementation”. I do have to say that I’m also kinda over Cat Sebastian, her books were my introduction to mainstream m/m but her last few books were all very same-y.
--
Yeah, I'm way behind on a lot of authors I like, and many of them have gotten samey either because they seem to be getting tired in general or because the pandemic made their writing more boring.
(A lot of toothless fluff that feels like it needed a second draft has come out recently. I think writers are overwhelmed and uninspired but need to pay rent.)
KJ really lost me with the hideous attempts at diversity that just ended up being actively offensive. I know some people with no taste found them uplifting, but I thought they were flagrantly ableist and often verging on racist. I like books that aren't all white. I seek these out. KJ writes like she's too scared to call a nonwhite person hot, and the result is othering.
The treatment of the genderfluid character was a hot mess from start to finish. Genre-wise and historically, it made no sense. It sounded like it was written by a 14-year-old wannabe sensitivity reader from tumblr, not a seasoned author riffing off of sensation fiction. Why would you make this character shake and cry in the corner when they could have been a faaaaabulous sensation fiction drama queen? WHY THE FUCK would you make the entire plot and every sympathetic character's happiness hinge on them agreeing to dress as a man full time or not. This just makes them look like a jerk for not being able to do it and the author like a transphobe or just desperately uncreative. The autistic character was too stupid to live and the narrative gave him asspats for it. (You still defend your shitty brother when your boyfriend just lost his life's work to him, and we don't get told you're an asshole whose neurodivergence is no excuse?!) The poly narrative was wishy-washy in a way that is sure to alienate both fans of poly romance and people who want strict monogamy and did a bad job of ripping off the very same Heyer book that Cat Sebastian had already done a better m/m version of. Gross, gross, gross.
And then KJ will go back to cis white men only for a book and suddenly her writing improves. It's horrifying. (Though her editing quality and ability to write a satisfying narrative in one single book has gone down overall as well.)
She was never my #1 fave. We just have different kinks, and she's also a dubcon hater publicly and annoyingly. But I did get why she was so highly recced when I read her early stuff. By now, she has gone way downhill.
