Thank you so much for your kind writing work.
I think your idea of a MC concerned about the environment is great. As a coincidence, I was thinking about a MC interested in learning magic in order to help their own world, specially the environment and animals. Would you create something about Rime in this scenario?
Thank you so very much in advance!
Oh-ho I finally make a Rime-focused post! Still need one for Anisa tho
Happy Earth Day!
GN!reader, Redemption!Rime my beloved
Once he finds out you’re into nature, Rime takes you on walks through the forest a lot. He notices that you seem to light up whenever you’re out there in the fresh air, y’know? The first couple of times you’re bright and chatty and gushing about the scenery and the animals and how healthy everything looks. But then,, you’re quiet. Gradually you become more and more thoughtful. Rime doesn’t mind. He’s not much one for self-reflection but if you want to go for it, by all means he doesn’t really mind. He likes getting to spend some quiet time with you anyhow.
But then one day you turn to him, eyes blazing with determination, and say you need his help. Of course he’s willing to do just about whatever you want (even if he won’t verbalize that, he acts like he’s all annoyed with you all the time but he’s just trying to look cool). And then you whirl around and take his hands in yours and say You Need To Learn Nature Magic! ! ! !
Rime is intrigued. Once you explain Earth’s pollution problems - the fossil fuels and the trash dumping and the penguins choking on those plastic rings (I rewatched Happy Feet last night don’t @ me) and the oil dumping and the ozone layer and the over-hunting and the- the everything- he’s startled and disturbed and How The Fuck Has Your Race Survived This Long???
Anyways he says that since the Astrolabe’s main aspect is healing, using it to help heal the environment should be,, feasible. Not easy but feasible.
Depending on what you want to focus on first - the forest versus the sky versus the ocean - he sets up a lesson plan. Spends a couple days researching, workshopping spells, testing them out. He tries to act like he’s just Smart and Clever and Knows All This but really he’s having to get Felix’s help with figuring stuff out
Teaches you how to Yeet Trash into the Void, how to turn non-reusable materials into something suitable for degrading, etc.
Learn to purify water! Help the fish and the marine life! You can add magical additives to the water to carry it long and far to touch the places you could never feasibly reach
Use the Astrolabe like a vacuum to suck up the smog and convert it into rainclouds so that we get a little more rain, a little more water, a little more plant growth. You can’t single-handedly repair the ozone layer but You Can Do Some Little Things To Help
Animal! Conservation!! There’s enchantments you can cast that will ward off predators and poachers to let endangered species be a bit more protected.
Ice magic to help protect the ice caps?
Rime offers to kill talk to the CEOs who are allowing the insane amount of pollution solely for the sake of profits
He’s real proud of you for wanting to protect your planet.

Live blog the book here, I'm so morbidly curious but I'd rather die than read if
okay so it’s… not a liveblog since i already read it but yes here are the highlights of THE GRACE YEAR BY KIM LIGGETT
warning for brief descriptions of many kinds of violence and sexual violence under the cut because kim liggett despises women and wants you to know it!
also sorry for my awful photos of my kindle screen
tierney james lives in a society where women have no rights
every year, all the 16-year-old girls are temporarily banished to the wilderness for a year. if they survive, a few lucky chosen ones among them get to get married off to men in town who choose them (the women have no say)
all women have awful lives. they aren’t allowed to congregate with other women. they aren’t allowed to dream or hum or enjoy sex. their husbands can have them banished or executed for any reason. all the girls and women have to watch other women get executed or whipped or punished in some way at least once a month on the full moons
men claim that women require constant supervision and discipline to keep them in line because they could be harboring secret magic. in theory, the point of the “grace year” is to give the girls a chance to burn out their magic before they come back to civilization
but the magic isn’t actually real, and at least the men who run the town are well aware of that
anyway. tierney sets out for her grace year
she discovers she’s unusually prepared to live in the wilderness because her dad prepared her – her dad is super nice and the narrative never considers for a second that he might be complicit in the harms done to these young girls :) so she does stuff like building rain barrels to catch fresh rainwater because the well water they’re supposed to drink has gross algae in it
but the other girls, led by mean ringleader kiersten, start becoming violent and bringing over the misogynistic rituals from their village into the grace year camp - like cutting off fingertips and cute stuff like that :)
tierney stands up to oppression so they kick her out of the encampment lol. bitches amiright?
the fear with being kicked out of the encampment is not about having to find food and shelter from wild animals. the main fear is Poachers. so on the outskirts of the main society, exiled women are forced into sex work serving the husbands of the village (yup! really!). those women and their children make up the outskirts community. and the adult sons of that community become poachers – and their prey is grace year girls. poachers lurk around the grace year encampment for girls who have run off, and they try to murder and dismember the girls and sell their body parts back to the city. their body parts are then EATEN as fertility potions and aphrodisiacs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so tierney’s like real scared of poachers lol
except weird thing, this one poacher keeps saving her life. this happens twice
then it happens a third time but she winds up knocked unconscious. and she wakes up naked and strapped to a table with some dude using a knife on her
she’s real scared and assumes she’s being skinned alive, because that is what the poachers do!
she’s too drugged to resist but over a period of weeks she regains consciousness enough to learn that he was just preventing her from freezing to death!!!! and the knife? well he was cleaning her wounds. with a knife. somehow that’s supposed to make sense. i’m not sure either.
they build up a rapport and i bet you know where this is going
she falls in love with the fucking poacher :)
basically she develops sympathy for him when she learns that this PROFESSIONAL GIRL-HUNTER unfortunately LIVES IN POVERTY and therefore DESERVES HER COMPASSION
Tumblr media
also poacher is a slur lol
Tumblr media
it’s weird that she’s so forgiving towards him because she hears him talking to his friend and they both call women “it” lmao
but who am i to say what is and is not romance
here’s a little snippet of tierney falling in love with him :)
Tumblr media
and this is a weird aside that the book definitely did NOT need, but for your own edification, turns out that in the outskirts community, the men do have sex, but only anal
Tumblr media
so anyway this nightmarish misogyny of the main character falling in love with a man who literally hunts teenage girls lasts for maybe a hundred pages
they have sex. even though tierney is likely to get burned at the stake if she returns to the village and her new husband discovers she’s not a virgin. so that’s pretty cool
but eventually tho, another poacher discovers that tierney’s lover is harboring prey and he threatens tierney by telling her he’ll kill her lover if she doesn’t return to the grace year camp right away
she does, because his safety is soooo important to her
again. this man hunts teenage girls
but back at the camp, the girls are super crazy still
oh but one thing tierney learned is that the well water they drink is poisoned and so she thinks if she can get them to stop drinking poison, and to drink from the stream instead, they might get better
see her poacher lover was soooo helpful
back at the camp, the girls are all freaking out that a poacher appears to be creeping around and stealing stuff. tierney assumes it’s the friend of her lover’s who threatened her. the girls at the camp want to just kill her as a sacrifice or something, but tierney convinces them to let her go into the woods to deal with him instead
she does find who was responsible. it turns out it actually wasn’t a poacher at all! it was a guard who she knows who used to work on her family’s estate. he’s a stalker and thinks all girls are whores. it’s not very clear what’s going on with him, but anyway, he dies
but then tierney gets back to the camp and omg the girls have killed a poacher while she was gone!!! tierney freaks out because what if it’s her boyfriend!!!!
it wasn’t, but she still flips out that they very wrongly murdered a woman-hunter
Tumblr media
literally cannot believe it. i literally just cannot believe it
HE WAS GOING TO KILL THEM AND SELL THEIR BODY PARTS FOR PEOPLE TO EAT AS APHRODISIACS
BUT YEAH. THEY’RE WRONG FOR KILLING HIM IN SELF-DEFENSE
tierney has this whole awakening that the poachers are victims of the patriarchy too sdhgiasodghaisdg
her one friend at the camp convinces her to go back and find her poacher lover and live with him in the woods forever
Tumblr media
oh yeah her sisters are going to get banished to the outskirts and be forced into sex work as soon as they get their first period. but it’s worth it so she can be with her poacher lover
anyway she goes back into the woods, but not before her main bully, kiersten, has a confrontation with ANOTHER poacher
Tumblr media
yeah poachers are people too guys
speaking off poachers being human. her lover dies. he dies a hero, protecting tierney
so she goes back to the camp and makes up with the girls
Tumblr media
put yourself first girl worry bout yourself
ANYWAY! their grace year is over and finally they get to return to the town! but there’s a roadblock before tierney can move into her husband’s house: SHE’S PREGNANT, AND SHOWING
yep! she’s been pregnant for at least four months. the book saved this news as a big reveal
no wonder her friend told her to go live in the woods with her lover forever
she is sure to be burned at the stake
and actually tierney is down to get burned at the stake because then she’ll be able to speak her piece about how she feels that the grace year is bullshit with a whole audience listening. (she notes that bodies take a long time to burn, OMG TIERNEY FIND A BETTER WAY).
but when the village realizes she’s pregnant and everyone is like “BURN HER!!!”, her new fiance heroically intervenes and fakes this whole thing about how actually the baby is his and he wants to marry her anyway
tierney’s like, um, well i really wanted to get burned at the stake, but…….
Tumblr media
that’s right. she decides to live and marry this guy all so the poacher’s family line can live on
anyway tierney’s sort of excited to be friends with her new husband but as soon as she tells him the pregnancy wasn’t from rape, he throws a temper tantrum and goes to chop down some trees to cool off
Tumblr media
bummer
but all is not lost! she makes up with him and she realizes she can love both him AND the poacher lover
and the baby too, one presumes
tierney really has quite a good life for a society where women aren’t people, i have to say
anyway, soon enough she gives birth. in excruciating detail i might add
as soon as the baby is born, tierney realizes that all this time, when she’s been having dreams about this girl with a red birthmark helping her save her people, those dreams were about HER FUTURE DAUGHTER
tierney names the baby grace
she’s literally seventeen years old
and that is the end of the fucking book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so to recap: men who buy women as sex slave wives? are actually kind and loving souls. men who hunt women and dismember them and sell their organs? also kind and loving souls. but teenage girls being fed poison water? those girls are bitches. tierney doesn’t care about them lol
also
in the acknowledgments
the author thanks elizabeth banks and universal pictures for optioning the book
please let this die in development hell i truly can’t take it
worst fucking book i’ve ever read
thank you goodnight

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BEAUTIFUL DEMON CHILDREN.
Tumblr media
i won’t attach pictures but i’ll link their toyhouse profiles that has all the art i’ve done of them, and some additional info
vega
my main boi. he’ll be the main character of a comic i hopefully make someday (i have absolutely nothing really written for it tho lmao). he’s a cocky asshole, but also very charismatic. gets allllllllll the ladies. pretty high energy most of the time.he loves doing graffiti also. it’s illegal regardless, but he only prefers doing it on run down buildings, abandoned vehicles, etc. he won’t vandalize someone’s house or business
aquilo
baby boy. baby.shy, anxious, nervous little guy. he’s also leucistic, meaning his skin, wings, hair, etc, are much lighter than most demons. (most demons have black wings, dark hair [though not always], and their skin generally ranges from a fairly middle tone, to fairly dark. but they come in practically every color, as long as it relates to their element) albino demons exist too, but aquilo’s not albino.in adulthood, he’s not made fun of for being leucistic, but he probably gets weird looks or comments occasionally. he most likely got bullied a bit in grade school. as a result, he wears clothes that cover up his body as much as possible. his parents love and support him very much regardless.he studies medical stuff in college, probably something pharmaceutical, just generally relating to medicine, creating medicine, etc. he just wants to help people
volcan
giant fucking asshole. like not even ironically. he’s just rude and angry all the time. people tend to avoid him because of that and that just makes him even MORE angry. he acknowledges that he has a problem, but he just can’t fucking stop being an asshole. no one’s gonna give him a chance, so why bother otherwise.hates vega for all that he is, but mainly because he wishes he could be more like him. and also because they’re both fire demons, but vega has the “better” fire element. he’d rather die that ever admit that though
(at this point it gets into less developed territory, because the next 4 were not originally mine. i bought them off of a friend and redesigned them to fit my demon stuff)
vermel
is mostly quiet, and keeps a cool, level-headed attitude in most situations, no matter how bad. though, at the same time, he can be fairly socially awkward in some situations.he works by hunting animals, selling their pelts and meats to those who want it. but, he’s very conscientious of animal populations, and won’t over hunt in order to keep populations stable. as a result, he hates poachers with a passion, and will do everything he can to stop them.
theian
also very level-headed, but mainly from a professional standpoint. they are a musician, working with classical instruments. they mainly play piano, and do concerts that attract large crowds. essentially, they are a bit of a celebrity, which sometimes attracts unwanted attention and strange people.they are incredibly proficient with wind instruments (flutes, clarinets, etc) due to being a wind demon. they also play some string instruments.
aurelien
a knight? warrior? i’m not entirely sure. his existence kind of implies the demon world has some kind of army (and thus, wages war against other nations) that functions in a medieval or old style kind of manner, despite the setting of this world being modern. i’m still figuring it out lol.he often keeps a serious attitude due to his training, but he is otherwise a pretty nice guy (like, a REAL nice guy, not that bullshit “nice guy” crap) with a sunny personality everywhere else.older brother of jovian
jovian
this guy is also a bit of an asshole, but definitely not on volcan’s level. he’s probably also the only one who can really tolerate volcan’s attitude. they’re probably friends.but, unlike volcan, he actually has a definite, solid (though, still not justifiable) reason for being a little shit. the reason being: he feels incredibly overshadowed by his brother. his brother is very proficient in what he does, and as such is very adored by the general crowd. jovian has no real skills, nothing he has a true passion for. not anything he’s discovered yet, anyway. (he probably likes skateboarding tho) so he feels he can never achieve anything as great as his brother.due to all that, he often keeps a very rude attitude towards his brother, maybe even claims to “hate” him. but not actually. he just feels sad because he feels like his brother is going to leave him behind.in case it wasn’t obvious, he’s the younger brother of aurelien lol
there’s also, like, my own self-insert demon, but she’s 100% not canon to whatever story i come up with for this comic i wanna make lmao

Okay so it may have been somewhat obvious that I'm riding super high on Dragon Age feels and that's because I decided, like an idiot, to replay all three games jumbled up like mess, including the DLC for DA2 for the first time (shit Legacy is really good and after like four playthrough without Sebastian he's actually a bit of an adjustment and God the dog is so good). Which means I've like gone from Legacy to the Siege of Adamant to the Landsmeet in Orgins basically on different nights this week and it's been a ride and I have a lot of various thoughts but
One thing that constantly stands out to me is how lopsided the Warden vs Hawke choice is in Inquistion. Like I know a lot of people when confronted with Allistair like love Allistair (and no lie I'm fond of him even tho I've thrown him under various buses in my five playthroughs possibly more on that later) but like he'll never hold a candle to disaster dumpster child of my heart fucking Hawke.
But even more so narratively the Warden sacrificing themselves vs Hawke sacrificing themselves does not feel equal for several reasons.
One it feels like a betrayal of Hawkes story and arc, a sad, bitter end in a life full of bitter defeats and more than anything he's alone. Varric may or may not be there but Hawkes story was about their friends, their family, and to end alone in the darkness feels like it just spits on so much da2 was actually about. (I feel like YMMV here for sure but it doesn't sit right for me, being able to casually kill off the protagonist of a whole game and it feels more like a bitch move against the bad reviews da2 got than something that made narrative and emotional sense. I'm not saying Hawke wouldn't and shouldn't sacrifice themselves at some point, just man, not like this).
But on the flip side it does feel like a more satisfying end to basically any of the warden's stories. In no small part because bioware has been doing it's best to make us forget warden's short lifespans, plus, their whole motto is literally about sacrifice.
Okay so. Allistair abd Loghain both become wardens in Origins which is roughly ten years ago from the beginning of Inquistion, Inquistion is about three years long (?) so Allistair has been a warden longer than Loghain but they're both at the very least a decade into their wardenship. Pretty sure Origins doesn't mess around when they say wardens have about fifteen years to live post joining which means they're both dangerously close to the point where the taint is gonna start taking over their bodies and the calling becomes too loud to ignore (I think inquistion did weird things with the calling as being the only peril to wardens: uh no the point is the taint consumes them the calling gets louder and they go to the deep roads to die fighting rather than become a ghoul twisted by their poisoned blood. But of course that's a larger story about Inquistion trying to walk back a lot of the fucking weirdness and terror of the earlier games. Aside from Envy they somehow made fighting an army of blood mages dull I still don't get it). So what I'm saying is the Origin wardens don't really have that much more time. We don't know when Stroud joined but it was probably as long if not longer ago. Hawke meanwhile is probably somewhere between 30 and 40 and doesn't have a five year will probably be dead window.
Now this is the first time I've played Allistair as the warden so I'm not really through his bit yet so I can't speak to it entirely (tho I admit I find him sorta annoying? Like after all this time and you're as childish and victimized as ever. Ten years of being a warden and you can only complain? Ok. I get wanting to keep a character recingizable but I feel like what character development he gets in Origins is sorta ignored). But even so a dramatic sacrifice after being betrayed /again/ feels like a decent enough ending for his years as a warden. A redemption for an order he loved from the start. Stroud meanwhile is such a non character it's almost irrelevant to talk about him except to quote the warden motto: In war, victory. In peace, vigilance. In death, sacrifice. You might as well do the dramatic sacrifice to save others that's your job as a warden.
Loghain is last here because I actually think sacrificing himself in the fade is the best ending to warden!loghain's story you can actually get. (Also unlike Allistair who is upset and whiny about being hunted Loghain takes this with his usual grim humor like ah yes I'm still not one of them fancy that and I'm sorry I love him and his redemption arc so fucking much leave me here). Because like, he was the farmer turned poacher turned revolutionary turned war hero turned traitor turned king turned warden. He believes completely in his goal in front of him to the exclusion of things like sensibility and morals. He's loyalty was never to people but to Ferelden itself... Except sometimes he tripped on the way and then his lionheart tendencies go into overdrive. Marric. Anora. He loves selectively because he loves somewhat completely. He calls the Warden friend here in Inquistion something that makes me drop my controller and clutch my chest (and this last playthrough I actually earned a lot of approval from him so we actually /were/ just about friends... All you have to do is compliment Anora and you get +6 to +12 very quickly he's such a proud papa fucking kill me). Loghain doesn't have a lot of friends! He was never truly accepted by the wardens! He should have died during the Blight ten years ago! He's basically been living (and fighting) on borrowed time since then.
But here's the other thing: he doesn't have a lot of friends. The Warden. Marric.
Hawke.
He calls Hawke friend. (How did they meet??? Why don't we get along? How does mage!purple!Hawke and Loghain become friends??? I need to know!) This is a dude who cares for very few people but he and Hawke refer to each other as friends.
He's been living on borrowed times. He's been fighting all his life and he's betrayed and been betrayed and has done horrible things and made up for it as much as he can with his blade and blood and he's been hearing the calling scratch with it's claws at the back of his mind for months...
And if it comes down to him or Hawke let him sacrifice himseld for one of the few friends he's ever had. Let him make the choice to live up to his warden oath to eke out the tiniest bit more redemption open to him. It would have been a relief to him to die during the Blight, imagine how much more it is now, knowing he's protecting one of the few friends he's ever made. Knowing despite Hawkes furious yells this is better, because Hawke is a survivor and they're going to make it out of this too.
Tldr leaving Hawke in the fade seems a terrible end to their arc, leaving the warden makes narrative sense considering like warden lore but fuck me up it's like Loghain's best possible ending and I'm really emotional him and Hawke are friends wtf bioware you can't just say that and then never show me how this happened
