In the context that Yaz’s sense of self preservation has gotten worse, this parallel isn’t good, but apart from that, the doctor and master’s escapades without the fam in spyfall vs them in the timeless children.
In the premiere, they are trying to keep going and waiting for her to return and fix things, really, in the finale they save themselves from a far worse situation and then go and seek her out to save Her.
Not only have they grown, but they’re now aware, from how traumatized she was the Last time he showed up, that her being left with him in bad, they don’t know what happened but they know he did something that messed with her that much.
(admittedly, they may have more of a clue what he did now they’re standing in the smouldering remains of gallifrey, but it’s never mentioned).

Grantaire’s Modernized Rant
This is a rewrite of one of Grantaire’s drunken speeches from Les Misérables, in Chapter IV of Book Four–Les Amis de L’ABC, which has been modernized not only into current speech but also do to with current issues. I put quite a bit of effort into it, so enjoy!
~~<><><>~~
Grantaire, extremely drunk, had started ranting at the top of his lungs from the corner of the pub which he had taken over with his volume, shouting: "I'm bored!! I need alcohol, life fucking SUCKS!! It's all so POINTLESS and cheap and short and definitely hates me!! People always talk about wanting happiness, but I mean, how selfish and vain is that!? Hell, it was once said that "all is vanity", and I agree, even if that might not even be a real quote! If you have nothing else, at least you can think about how great you are! People use it to make everything seem so much more important than it is. A kitchen is a 'laboratory', a boxer is a 'pugilist', a doctor is an 'apothecary', even bugs have super extra Latin names!! It can be some good and some bad, I guess. The good is stupid, the verbal and mental equivalent of a participation award. 'You're alive, congratulations!!' The bad becomes too much and people can't stand to be around you. I'm annoyed with one and exhausted with the other. People don't take anything seriously anymore, entitlement leads to making a mockery and a joke of everything! Rich people complain about paying high taxes, happy people write songs about depression and loss and heartache; anything can be 'memed', no matter how serious! Go, then, and enjoy your quote-unquote 'edgy' humor! No one has any respect or integrity anymore. People in relationships cheat on each other, fights over stupid politics ruin friendships, it is our own fault that people die by their own hand! It's too bad I'm stupid, or I'd quote all kinds of ancient wisdom and facts and evidence to prove my point, but I don't know anything. I've always been too much of a smart-ass; when I was put in the most prestigious schools and classes, all I did was fuck around. What's the point of putting so much importance into those things, anyway? Being part of them doesn't make one person any better than another. So even if I'm stupid but privileged, I am fundamentally the same as an intelligent but unfortunate person. It's so fucked, everyone wants to be perfect and have all the best qualities. Every one of those good qualities can be made into bad ones by perspective! Frugality is underneath just greediness, generosity is just attention-seeking in disguise; bravery is an excuse to brag and the pious are also the bigoted. So which are we SUPPOSED to say and understand? Do we applaud the victor or the loser, the Allies or the Nazi's? You'd prefer the victor, right? Great, then I suppose we'll all applaud the corrupt officer who was VICTORIOUS over the unarmed teenager, as well! There's your positivity, but also insanity. That officer did what he did because of human prejudice, just as the Protestant burned the Pagan at the stake because of his prejudice against that which was different. History repeats itself, especially the grimmest generalities. The battle at Palmito Ranch mirrors the battle at Yorktown, the internment of Japanese-Americans inspires the imprisonment of immigrants. I don't see the cause for celebration of victory. You're arrogant for winning and weak for losing. Can nothing be one thing without also exhibiting traits of the other? I'm so done with the human race in general. You expect me to 'help people in need'; what people, then? Should I feed the hungry? What about the homeless, then? Which is more deserving of my help? It's a debate which could go on forever, senseless from the beginning! Our politicians are the reincarnations of the tyrannical emperors of the past, taken straight from our history textbooks. What does one have to do, anyway, to be considered important enough to make it into one of those books? I brush my teeth every day, but I can guarantee you that I'll never learn about the inventor of the toothbrush in my history class. No, instead I'll learn about some of the most horrible men who've ever lived and have done nothing to affect my life. And why? To avoid the repetition of history? Regardless of man's actions, such an outcome seems inevitable in every sense. Not to buy into stereotypes, but the liberal young hopefuls who put so much stock into these dated ideas will find themselves just as stuck. I mention stereotypes with the utmost authority, of course! They make up everything we think about our society on a daily basis! Your clothing, your speech, your actions, and your whereabouts decide for you what kind of person you must be to a thousand strangers a day, easily. Even those who claim to be non-judgemental, their opinions are affected by such stereotypes even if they deny it. Such assumptions are what our society functions on. And it can be beneficial in some situations, of course! A first-impression can warn one of a dangerous person, one to be cautious of, absolutely! It can give one a whole host of necessary information for dealing with a person in a social situation, yes, but can also cause one to miss out on a potentially vital opportunity which now will never be known. And the only thing which MOST PEOPLE will care about is, oh no, FOMO!! Yet this behavior and thinking will never change, no matter a person's intent to block it. It is human nature. You who claim not to judge books by their covers, might you be the uninformed while you claim your superiority to the cautious? And now that you consider that, SURPRISE, what I have just suggested is yet ANOTHER assumption! Even one made about yourself is one which makes you question what you know about your opinions, further proving my point. So what really is different between you and he who judges others by first visual or interactive impression all the same? Dammit, people, I'm telling you!! NOTHING IS DIFFERENT!! The whole human race has an eternal, genetic superiority complex and proves it every day! The other races of the earth are considered lesser races simply because we have taken over what is theirs and made it our own. I do not claim to be immune to such judgment and arrogance! I can acknowledge my faults, that I rely heavily on appearances when I need to! So why not crucify me now!? Where is my judge, jury, executioner!? Oh, so it is you, Louison. Hey, didn't see you there." So Grantaire, far drunker now (if that's possible), caught the girl as she passed just trying to bus the tables, and turned his ridiculous and never-ending rant on her. Bossuet leaned over and tried to clamp a hand over Grantaire's mouth to shut him up, but this started Grantaire off on an even worse rant: "Ugh, GET OFF ME! You're not gonna shut me up or calm me down, not while I'm speaking the truth to the masses, to anyone who will be smart enough to listen! I'm fine, you don't need to do that. I'm just sad. What do you want me to say? Humans are horrible, they just completely suck. Butterflies are great, but humans are failures. God fucked up with this one. You want to see something really screwed up, there's nothing more so than your average joe on the street. Like me. I'm depressed and a hypochondriac and I'm pissed for no reason and I'm sleepy and I'm bored and I'm exhausted and I'm STUPID! FUCK IT ALL!" "Then shut up, please!!" Bossuet tried again to silence him, as he'd been in the middle of trying to have a conversation about work with his friend, in the background as Grantaire threw his tantrum.

People were, by all standards, are such predictable things to work with.
Humans run on emotions, on their delusions of desire --  to take hold of that, and manipulate it like a variable of an experiment, gives someone the full power to control and break down the human conscience to disarray. To Toruga, it was as easy as taking a loose strand from one’s favorite blanket, or toy, and pulling till it falls apart in a pathetic mesh of string and cotton. In truth, it was not the destruction of the item that intrigued and pleasured him, but just how responsive a human was in their volatile breakdown over such menial things. Guzma was no different from any human, except for one thing :
His denial was simply rich.
And everything he is was nothing short of the embodiment of a bomb waiting to explode. All you had to do was push the right buttons, and pull the right thread..
But Toruga had not come here to destroy him.. Not yet. Not when there was so much fun to be had. The high strung emotions in the room were not lost to the scientist. In fact, it was potent in a sense that it left a pleasurable tingle in his skin watching Guzma sit there twiddling and shaking ever so slightly. Psychological warfare was his specialty, and goodness did he enjoy reaping the fruits of his effort like his. He gave the bait of compliment, and smiled further at the subtle change when Lusamine’s approval was mentioned.   This boy, as disappointing as he was at the start, was a mesmerizing piece of work. The ideal patient he would spend hours analyzing and testing on if given the chance -- yet as he finds himself sinking too deep into his own desires, her jerks himself back to the moment. To his prey’s pitiful voice:
“You gonna take good care of her, right? Of Rosie.”
So the boy does have a heart! And that very crooked heart of his is eating him alive.
The spider must take care to not lick his dripping fangs with delight ; He plasters on his nurturing mask, that usually indifferent expression softening with sympathetic care as he takes steps forward. The voice of a loving father works effortlessly to lay the delicate webbing for the fly to take comfort in. Everything he said before was left in the ashes of old.
“ Of course, my boy. You’ve done the right thing, you know..”  His large, paw-like hands pull the chair out, to which he sits sideways in. Crooked to face Guzma, in a matter of seconds the deceptive spider alters his entire demeanor to fit the scenario. Once imposing, Toruga now let his shoulders slouch and his body lean against the table in a much more comfortable manner -- They were even in standing, not a delinquent and a scientist, but two men on familiar terms.         Friendly, even.              At level, there was no looking down upon the other.
Toruga seemed to hold a kinder youth to him when he smiled up close, even if those orange eyes did not lose their predatory edge. His look was empathetic as he reached and gave an assuring pat to Guzma’s arm, “ You’ve saved her life, Guzma. What could you all have done for her with your financial state? Surely you couldn’t have had her live in the slums her entire life -- You’re not selfish,” from the arm, his hand glides upward to squeeze and shake the man by the shoulder hearteningly,
“ You’re smart. And I regret that I ever thought so badly               of you and your skulligans..”
Because it was just so damn easy to lie through the teeth. Up close, Toruga’s age was only exposed in the way his eyes crinkled when his smile broadened, like a harmless, loving old man. He spoke with such strong passion and regard for Guzma , any cold word he said before could seem like it came from a stranger.  He wanted Guzma to know his truth, as sweetly as the devil could.  Toruga’s hand moved in an expressive manner of showmanship when he continued. “ Here, little Rosie will receive the utmost quality of care and living standards, to nurture her very unique needs as the first of her kind. She’ll have the best food, the best medical care, the best clothes, and the cleanest room she could ever imagine for a girl who once lived in the wild. She’s afraid of doctors -- she has been since she was a little girl.  You know how children can be when they’re faced with things they don’t understand,” His smile tilted to a one sided grin, giving a mirthful chuckle , “ They tend to exaggerate and re-imagine things. Arceus only knows how her pokemon qualities have altered her experience and her mind. With us, she’ll have much less heartache. Now, you and the pink haired miss will have one less thing to worry about.”
With that, at last the scientist pulled his hand away and stippled them together thoughtfully on the tabletop. In the meantime, he let his words simmer in the air. His warm gaze fixated carefully upon Guzma, watchful of the body language for the answers of his success. All the secrets were easy to access with a snake in the grass he had placed.. The drama of human nature was a delicious subject to manipulate and use, just as much as it was to explore. He knew of the dynamics between Guzma and the pink haired..  Max, was it? The same girl that his creation seemed to follow around like a puppy. Toruga assumed that, surely, she must have been burdensome on the relationship of these two. Though, he thought again, it was more like a two front war between Lusamine and Rosie as the source of trouble.  Inward somewhere, he knows taking her out of the equation won't do much -- but it was easier to let Guz believe that. Now that the groundwork had been laid, it was time to deal with more important data he needed of the boy.
“ You did good, and you should be proud of yourself. Worry about it no longer… But,” Toruga turned away, unraveling his fingers now to rub a thoughtful hand at his chin,  “ I could certainly use your help just a little more. A few questions, for a matter of... health, really. I do hope you don’t mind me being personal with this.” He feigns embarrassment with a bashful bow of his head and sideways glance. He then cleared his throat and spoke softly, delicately :
“ Would you.. Elaborate on what sort of...’endeavors’, you’ve all exposed her to? Drugs of any kind.. Sexual activity…  Does she exhibit anything out of the ordinary        compared to the rest of your people?”

BOOKS I (RE)READ IN 2018: FURTHERMORE BY TAHEREH MAFI
"Alice Alexis Queensmeadow, 12, rates three things most important: Mother, who wouldn’t miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. Father disappeared from Ferenwood with only a ruler, almost three years ago. But she will have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is Oliver whose own magic is based in lies and deceit. Alice must first find herself—and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss." "Red was ruby, green was fluorescent, yellow was simply incandescent. Color was life. Color was everything. Color, you see, was the universal sign of magic." "Love, it turned out, could both hurt and heal." "Narrow-mindedness will only get you as far as Nowhere, and once you're there, you're lost forever.” "Alice was an odd girl, even for Ferenwood, where the sun occasionally rained and the colors were brighter than usual and magic was as common as a frowning parent." "Making magic is far more interesting than making sense." So I actually read this book a few months ago and then recently reread it via audio so I could remember all the details for this review. I was first introduced to Tahereh Mafi’s work through her book Shatter Me, her debut novel. Ironically, it wasn’t through any of the ways I normally hear about books - Booktube, Goodreads, my best friend, Booklr - but from my husband’s aunt. She runs - or used to run, not sure if she’s still doing it - a book review blog. And she posted a review of Shatter Me and I was like, “What a weird, interesting writing style, lemme check this out.” At this point the entire Shatter Me Trilogy plus novellas had been published and I devoured all of them (still need to review those, too). So when I heard Tahereh Mafi was writing a middle grade book, I got super excited! Especially because this was during a time when I was too stressed out to read any YA, since most of the YA I like involves having to save the world and all the stress that entails. I need to lay out some trigger warnings real quick: the main character, Alice? Her mom is incredibly abusive, both emotionally and physically. It’s treated as not such a big deal in the book, which is honestly the story’s only real flaw, but it’s bad. It took me seven tries and resorting to an audiobook (and even with a fantastic narrator, that short audiobook took me almost a month to get through) because the abuse was so bad. So:
TRIGGER WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE OF A CHILD BY THEIR PARENT
Let’s get started, yo! First of all, the setting. OMG. See, I love tthis thing called Victorian fairy tales, which is something you can find in books like Mary Poppins - these super fantastical bits of whimsy that just warm your heart and make you grin because they’re so creative and fun. In the Mary Poppins books, you can jump into chalk drawings and go to a circus amidst the stars and make friends with a woman who sells living candy-cane horses. In Catherynne Valente’s Fairyland series, there are shadow balls and talking phonographs. And in Furthermore, there’s light raining down from the sky in literal drops, sticks of magic you use like money, and forests full of invisible berries. The way the world is put together and described, so full of color and imagination, is awesome and beautiful and I could picture it perfectly. It reminded me in all the best ways of books like The Phantom Tollbooth (one of my favorites). But I wouldn’t want to live there, because Ferenwood is full of colorism and ick. Alice, the female lead, is an albino in a world where color is important and the darker you are, the more magical you’re considered to be. So Alice gets treated like garbage.
Also I think Alice may be autistic, but I don’t know if she’s deliberately coded autistic or if Tahereh Mafi did it by accident while trying to make Alice eccentric, but she comes across as autistic. I’ve actually begun to pay more attention to that sort of the thing in recent years, being autistic myself, and I see it a lot - authors giving their characters autistic characteristics, often without meaning to. I just touch on it here because Alice is already treated badly for being albino, but she’s also considered a freak because of the way she behaves - like an autistic preteen. And I wonder if Tahereh Mafi did that on purpose as a sort of commentary or not, because while Alice is treated badly by the people of Ferenwood for her behavior, the Narrator (who is an actual character in the story; love when that happens) always sides with Alice in this regard. The storyline is sweet and I love it. Alice tries to compete in the magical testing all the preteens do on their twelfth birthday, and so she dances. And her dancing is magical but it’s not Magical, you know? So she fails the test. Well, turns out a boy who passed the test the year before, Oliver (the brat), needs Alice’s help fulfilling a quest - rescuing Alice’s missing dad. So they go on a quest together, although Alice hates Oliver (and rightly so, he’s rude). They go to a dozen different and cool places, all of which are dangerous and all of which are different. I wish we could’ve spent more time in those places but I understand why we didn’t. The only annoying thing is there’s an origami fox on the cover but it only pops up in one of the worlds for like two pages and then it’s gone and I thought we could spend more time both in that world and with that creature since it ended up on the cover. But alas, not. I understand why - middle grade is often cursed to be short, especially if it’s the author’s first MG novel ever. Once you get big and bad like Rick Riordan you can start tossing out gihugic tomes like Son of Neptune or Blood of Olympus on the regular. Oliver’s reason for needing Alice was one I didn’t see coming, nor was her magical talent - a talent they hint at throughout the book but never explain until near the end, at the perfect moment. I thought it was an interesting commentary on how young girls perceive themselves, that Alice hates this marvelous, amazing talent she has of bringing color into the world from nothing...because she can’t use it to change how she looks. Society has trained her already, by the age of twelve, to discount something incredible about herself because she can’t use it to make herself into what society wants her to be. That’s pretty impressive for a book this short. I loved some of the more deliberate messages in the work - the thing I mentioned about society’s pressures on young girls, and also that it’s okay to tell boys to screw off if they’re mean to you, and to have hope and to look for second chances (Alice thinks she only has one chance to pass the test and believes her life is over when she fails, only to find out she can try again the next year). I love all of that, and the lyrical and whimsical quality of the prose, and the world building is so creative and also makes me a bit hungry (people eat magic in this book, among other things; I wonder what it tastes like). Now...let’s talk about the abuse. That’s my biggest issue with the book. Alice’s mother is a total bitch. And not in a cool, kickass way like the lady in the show Empire. She’s vicious, she’s cruel, and she’s abusive. Alice knows - and the Narrator confirms - that she turned bad when her husband went missing, and apparently the worry for him and the strain of raising four kids on her own is making her hard and sad, but I don’t give a shit. I was hoping Tahereh Mafi would’ve gone all Hansel and Gretel on this lady and when Alice comes home with her dad, the wife’s dead or something. She beats Alice (at one point she beat Alice for chasing a boy out of the place where she was sleeping, even though he kept staring at her in her sleeping clothes, because apparently the boy - Oliver - had the right to break into their barn at 3AM and ogle Alice???), she verbally abuses Alice, she sends her to bed regularly without dinner, is constantly criticizing, won’t hug her or kiss her, and - this one really got me, for some reason - forces her to do illegal things. Those invisible berries I mentioned? Alice can find them and bring back whole baskets because of her magical gift, and so her mom sends her out to pick them all the time. If she brings home enough, her mom smiles. If she doesn’t, her mom yells and calls her names and sometimes beats her. Guess what? Picking those berries is illegal. We don’t find this out until much later in the book, but it is. The thing I didn’t like about the berries is that Oliver, who’s thirteen, is less concerned about Alice’s mother beating her for not picking enough contraband berries and instead focuses on how her ability to find the berries in the first place means Alice has really impressive magic. NOBODY seems to care how much Alice is being abused, not even the Narrator. The Narrator sympathizes with Alice’s hurt feelings and despair over her missing Father, but it’s never objectively stated that her mom is abusing her AND SHE IS. Yeah, her mom is sooo glad to have her back after Alice almost dies on her trip with Oliver, but so what? My roommate’s mom is so abusive that my roommate’s clergy leaders, doctors, and psychological therapist all said my roommate needed to cut ties with said mom, even though my roommate’s mom has also exhibited the same kind of “oh baby I’m so sorry, I love you so much” bullshit. That’s what abusers do. So I hate Alice’s mom. She literally makes her daughter feel like if she doesn’t risk her life numerous times AND bring her father back, there is no chance her mother will ever love her. And if she pulls that stuff off (which she does), then MAYBE her mother will love her. Nuh-uh. Nope. Hate that bitch. Other than that, I really loved this book. The characters felt real (Alice is me, but without my anger), Even the ones I didn’t like were still REAL, and well-drawn. The world building and word choice is fantastic. Basically, if you can get past the evil mom, read this book. World Building: 1 star Realism: 1 star Word Choice: 1 star Plot: 1 star Characterization: 1 star - ¼ star because Oliver Newbanks is an obnoxious little creep - 1 star because the mom is AN ABUSIVE EVIL BITCH - ¼ star because NOBODY DOES ANYTHING ABOUT THAT +½ star because Alice is amazing and has a genius brain and I love her Total score: 4/5 stars Would I Buy It: Yes! I own it and loved it enough I got the sequel for Christmas (in...2017...I've been sitting on this review for months...)! Would I Recommend: yes, but with trigger warnings. Again, highly abusive evil bitch mom who somehow doesn’t die.

Sun in Aries - 1st Decan/Ruled by Mars (Aries)
I’ve already went ham into this with the ‘BP: Sun & Moon’  but I’ll give a brief reintroduction on this as well! 💕
Sun in Aries especially in the 1st Decan, exhibits traits that emphasizes their Arian nature- energetic, lively, uncomplicated and innovative. They’re often already on the move, most likely to get things done physically rather than wait on long-awaited plan or drawn-out emotional speech that would ‘inspire’ them. They’re quite pragmatic, and although they admire and respect other ways of doing things, they’d much rather just get on the move and actually do it to achieve what they want
Impatience and impulsiveness might be a vice, however their greatest strength is their ability to move on and direct their energy forward.
They’re not big on planning ahead, but that creates space for innovation. They live in the now, and unlike other signs, they benefit a lot from this kind of mentality.
The way they go about things is pretty direct, active and straight forward. They often get a bit whiplashed if someone tries to play games with them, as they’re pretty forthcoming people and expected the same back.
They can be careless, lack tact, impulsive and reckless to a fault without realizing what they’ve done. But they’re quick to want to atone for any mess they might have made.
Aries lives simply in this way, they know what they want and they do whatever is necessary to achieve it. They don’t mind cutting corners, but often they see it as underhand or unnecessary, it’s the journey that matters to them.
Most of the time, Aries appreciates challenges in their life. They feel best when they can overcome those little objections and feel ‘progressed’ in how far they’ve come. They like things clean and tidy, a fresh slate or a fresh start to the day.
Sun (Aries) - Conjunct - Venus (Aries) [1 degree]
This is a good aspect to have! Conjunction around the lesser degrees, between aspects of the Sun-Venus can help the native Arian showcase their much more charming side to the public and smooth out rough edges they might have otherwise.
Lisa already has this working for her even when she wasn’t in the limelight, people with Sun-Venus aspect tends to exhibit harmonic, pleasant and charming traits (think Libra/Taurus) and places an emphasis on their Sun that they want to be perceived pleasantly this way.
They tend to be alot more easy-going with this aspect, working that Arian charm in a non-confrontational manner and bringing abundance of joy and enthusiasm to the people around them.
There’s a like for social interactions and pleasantries, diplomatic and often generous. They can sometimes become pushovers when they’re trying really hard to please someone (in the industry) or don’t know any better.
The ability to attract people to her through her charm (Venus) is convert, she exudes her individuality and self-expression (Sun/Ego) and if the person responds positively, she might find interest in them. This however, can mean that she might need validation from other people or put pressure on herself if she doesn’t receive positive affirmations. Learning to balance it with validating herself and finding a mixture of self-love within her own body might benefit in balancing out and stabilizing this aspect.
Sun (Aries) - Conjunct- Saturn (Aries) [3 degrees]
Again this is a good aspect to have especially when it’s conjuncted. I kind of do 3 is the max and 5 is pushing it, but I know some people accept it at lower degrees than I do and that’s fine too!
Sun conjunction Saturn can put a damper on the Sun but in a way, it might benefit them more in the long run which is what’s happening in Lisa’s chart.
She understands responsibility and long-term commitment, and she’s not afraid to sacrifice abit of her vitality in order to achieve it.
When it comes to commitment, she puts in hard work and acts cautiously. She rarely makes impulsive decision that would damage or effect anyone else (family/members) long term, she has the forethought and sight to be mature when she needs to be and handle responsibility well.
She sees and understands the significance in establishing long-term relationships (members) and has patience, tolerance and loyalty to them. She puts in work and dedicated effort into establishing this bond, and expects back on their relationship. People who lacks this Saturnian trait would turn her off.
Sun (Aries) - Sextile - Uranus (Aquarius) [1 degree]
Although it’s a harmonious aspect, Uranus is a generational outer planet ruled by Aquarius, having an Aries sun there can mean her individuality is expressed fighting for the underdog.
There’s a fiery quality to it that both Aries and Aquarius posses, a strike against tradition and you can see it in the way her ego (Sun) expresses her style (Venus) in how she dresses/performs.
Black pink is amazing because this aspect comes through very vividly, like 2NE1 the unusual styling and effect their stage performance and music has is trans-generational. It doesn’t cohere to just one aesthetic taste, it’s something most people can get into very easily. I suspect the other members probably has similar aspect in this area as well. They’re standing for something they’re comfortable in.
Sun (Aries) - Trine - Pluto(R) (Sagittarius) [1 degree]
Sun is the planet of the ego and Pluto is the planet of transformation, this emphasizes her moon even more since it’s in Scorpio (ruled by Pluto) she often feels that she’s going through different phases of growth and transformation all the time.
Between comebacks and stages, Lisa is constantly evolving and she realizes this. It’s a double whammy for her both in her moon and the aspect.
Her ego shifts along with her transformation, but at the same time her pluto is in retrograde. She might not show it as often but she is going through alot of these changes.
She can be slow in incorporating it into her ego, or letting her inner change/growth show in other aspects of her life. She feels it, she knows it. But that doesn’t mean she has to show it (abit of an escapism)
Tumblr media
Moon in Scorpio - 2nd Decan/Ruled by Neptune (Pisces)
Again, I’ve touched on her moon in the  the ‘BP: Sun & Moon’  but here’s a brief description of it here as well 💕
Scorpio moons can go through many intense emotions and internal growth rapidly, they often feel overwhelmed by their emotions and their thoughts transforming at a pace and intensity that even they can’t control. This can be devastating and amazing, depending on how one views it- their emotional growth goes through periods of death and rebirth and often pushes them to go through serious transformation within themselves throughout their entire life. It’s exhilarating, giving and tiring at the same time.
Scorpio has this intensity inside of themselves that, when projected outwardly onto other people you can see the storm inside of their eyes. Their emotional intensity doesn’t just stop there with themselves, but they can also evoke this kind of intensity in other people as well.
Lisa’s moon is ruled by Neptune/Pisces, which rules her subconscious and her dreams. Most likely her Moon in Scorpio is influenced by these elements, and her transformation often has to more to do with herself and her own growth than any external output.
Pressure she puts on herself, her dreams and aspiration she carries for her family to do well in foreign lands, insomnia, lethargy and depression might be prone to these individuals (again, I’m not certified to diagnose anyone with medical help, and I’m not trying to do so, if someone is suffering from mental illness or requires assistance in these areas, please consult a doctor or a medical assistance if they want to seek available help)
They might have the tendency to use sleeping as a coping mechanism and escapism in order to avoid going through these transformation too much (escapism or fighting to simplify the situation aka ‘im fine’ ). It can lead to repression of emotions or inner growth in order to stabilize her body.
Her Virgo Mars is the only earth sign capable of stabilizing her, but it’s also the only out put to her emotional transformation. She might’ve learnt to utilize this subconsciously in an unhealthy way to cope with how much she’s feeling and how much she’s going through. Most likely she did so anyways, especially with Sun-Venus and a strong Taurus/Venus influence on her Mars. She needs to unlearn how to do this and express herself when she needs to, or seek help when she needs it.
She desires stability but it she needs to realize it doesn’t need to be internal. She can seek stability externally through support and close friends as well. She should show this through consistency in reaching out to people, but in order to do so she needs to vocalize it or exert her Mars and Mercury into helping her with her Moon.
She might also be prone to having transformative dreams, or going through upheaval inside her subconscious. Suppressing these emotions during the day might point to having to confront them later when she’s in the unconscious realm, this can lead to very emotionally taxing dreams or adventurous ones, having to confront and balance negativity to positivity at some point. But it’s in no way unhealthy compared to the above (better dealing it through dreams than actively trying to repress it all the time conscious OR unconscious).
Moon (Scorpio) - Square - Jupiter (Aquarius) [3 degrees]
There’s a restless quality about her when she ‘can’t deal with her moon right now’, she tends to seek outlets that can extort her resources (i.e. retail therapy, shopping, negligence) a square is a difficult aspect but it’s capable of overcoming.
Her moon (emotions) has a direct impact on her luck (Jupiter) through her actions. Although it’s in 3rd degree, it might not be working strongly for her since she can easily learn to self-discipline.
She can become aloof, cold or negligence to those around her when she’s dealing with her emotions/internal turmoil. Absentmindedness or too coldly observing, she can neglect or make others around her feel like they shouldn’t support her which doesn’t reflect her natural charisma.
Lisa can have her moodiness, and its in this aspect how it effects those around her and her immediate resources (money, luck, etc).
Moon (Scorpio) - Square - Uranus (Aquarius) [2 degrees]
Again, her moon is working to bring her down. All her internal turmoil is effecting to some degree her relationships with others and her ability to perform sometimes. With her moon (emotions) squaring her Uranus (rebellion/innovation/technology) this can be interpreted in so many different ways.
Bigger picture is, she might find herself at odds with the people around her, slow moving and unstable or unsupportive at times because she’s lost in her own turmoil or has some doubts, her friends can feel unsupported or in-stabilized by her when they require her vote of confidence in them.
Lisa can be disagreeable to rules or authoritarian figures, or act out/lash out in a way just to prove her point across if she feels she’s unheard or misunderstood (her Saturn is too strong and working too well for her to do that, but she might have instances)
She might find bad news due to technology (it might bring her grief) or does something online she might regret later (hope it’s retail therapy)
Anyways its not a bad thing to have difficult aspects in your chart, all these are capable of the person who owns the chart to overcome and they can absolutely do it.
Tumblr media
Mercury in Aries - 3rd Decan/Ruled by Jupiter (Sagittarius)
Curiously this is un-aspected, but it seems to be working strongly in her chart and is very good for our girl Lisa! 💕
Mercury in Aries natives possesses an innocent charm about them, this is directly amplified by Jupiter’s influence (Sagittarius) her Arian charms becomes expanded upon, and her youthful vitality and charisma that makes her so lovable is put into a softer light. She acquires a happy-go-lucky trait to her that has people falling head over heels to do as she asks, often popular.
People like her because she’s straight forward and simple, she’s often humble and enthusiastic which is refreshing to be around.
Mercury in Aries are also magnetic in a way that they possesses great self-will that their Aries sun already has. The way they think and talk about things are quick and to the point, fast and decisive.
She can streamline progress and gets points across simply and easily, she’s amiable and likes helping others with a jokester kind of joviality to her. Often capable of lightening up any situation, she’s great at taking the weight/heat off of shier signs like Virgo or Capricorn who might get embarrassed by a mistake.
Mercury Arians in the 3rd decan likes to help others out, they possess an expansive open-minded quality to them that likes to learn and give/take equally. They’re willing to help people in worse situation than they are if the opportunity arises.
Tumblr media
Venus in Aries - 1st Decan/Ruled by Mars (Aries)
Aries in Venus says alot about her charisma on stage and her style that draws people into her. Her powerful performance really came through with her artistry, and it’s all in her Venus amplified by her Sun and Mercury of the same sign and similar element. She has so much passion (fire) in her chart (Aries and Sagittarius) along with the magnetic quality (water/Scorpio and Pisces) - the clash of the two elements in force makes for a powerful charisma in a person.
Venus in Aries in general,  has a pretty daring and up-front style about her. She has a cheeky smile but also a confident, independent women.
Venus in Aries often has this quality about them (especially in 1st degree) anyone  who wants to be with her has to match up to her in some way. She won’t ever settle for less than what she deserves, and if she finds you unworthy- well, she wouldn’t even give you her time of day.
That’s not to say she’s a minx all the time, Aries Venus charm extends to more than just her confidence. Her innocent childish charm complements the tougher side of her personality well, even the aegyo and possible tantrum she might pull is endearing.
There’s a fun-loving quality about them, like they’re not hard to please but you have to do it well. However, if you take too long to approach them they’d already be gone. They don’t tend to stick around, even if they’re going to give you a chance. They’re turned-off by wishy-washy behaviors, too much ‘games’ and not enough stimulation (slow burn) and not enough activities.
They’d rather take the lead in love and other areas in life, let them have their moments. They also like a little bit of competition, and likes games in the spirit of having fun. If something is done with intensity or mixed-up emotions (i.e. complex emotions directed towards them) they’d probably say no to that as well.
Venus (Aries)  - Conjunct - Saturn (Aries) [4 degrees]
Phew Im relieved for her! Venus conjunct Saturn can help trim and regulate the more impulsive habits of a native Arian.
She’s much more thrifty than the typical Arian, and less likely to spend her money impulsively if it isn’t going to serve her long term. Saturn itself has a quality to endure and likes to establish long lasting relations. It wants to establish longevity within oneself and with others.
She’s faithful and loyal to her friends and family. When in love, she exhibits more of her deeper, caring and nurturing side Aries also have.
She understands her traditions and her duties to the people around her, and can mature her Aries up a little to becoming more reserved and humble. She also can appreciate a little bit more sensibility in people, suitors who only wants to have fun doesn’t catch her attention unless they show the same quality and good sense as she does.
This really helps her Aries plans ahead in her future as well. Although there’s an innate need for the immediate now, she’s not oblivious to how long-term planning can benefit her and her activities.
Venus (Aries) - Sextile - Uranus (Aquarius) [2 degrees]
The planet of love (venus) and the planet of innovation (Uranus) can sometimes mean she’s more adept to nontraditional relationships within her life.
This can be in her love life, associates, working relationships or personal relationships. She’s bound to have an abundance of different relationships that she might not even know how to categorize.
But when she feels comfortable with this aspect, she’ll be ok with it. The idea might unnerve her at first, but sextiles typically come to fruition if she works on understanding herself and her expression better.
She can accept different types of people she’s met in her life, her open-minded sincerity (Uranus/Aquarius ) is met with pleasant charm and a refreshing disposition (Venus/Aries) .
She can also see insincerity in people. The charmingly quick wit of Aquarian and the intensity of Scorpio can bring this about even more in people who has this aspect. She likes to meet people at a middle ground (Aquarius) somewhere they can compromise to being in between.
She’s freedom loving and likes to give back the space to other people because she feels that’s what they need in order to grow.
She likes her independence (Aries) and even when she has that intensity about her, she doesn’t mind if others are a lot more cooler or different from how she is- as long as they give the same respect back to her.
Venus (Aries) - Trine - Pluto (Sagittarius) [0 degrees]
God this is the tightest degree she has. And I’m really glad for it too.
Her areas of passion and interest (dancing/performance) is transforming her life (Pluto) this is the aspect you can really see how she belongs on the stage and why Black Pink is so so good for her.
She has a needs to do something with her passion physically (Aries) and she finds it in the form of dance. It saved her. She found ‘it’. She doesn’t really know what to do with it yet, but she dances because she loves it. She wants to show it to the world, to more and more people.
Pluto talks about transformation, and Sagittarius talks about learning and travelling. Being able to transform and learn every time she dances, she thrives on it. When she can travel with the group on tour, and she can dance on that stage, she lives and breathes passion. She transforms herself when she dance.
She can express her venus fully and comfortably, she takes on a whole new persona every time and she feels so lively and bright when she can show and do things she’s passionate about.
This aspect is working amazingly well for her, and her charisma, her stage presence her magnetic aura (Scorpio/Pluto) it all comes and leads down to this. I’m so happy for her and this aspect. God.
Tumblr media
Mars in Virgo (R)  - 3rd Decan/Ruled by Venus (Taurus)
Again this is un-aspected, so it’s probably working like her mercury. Usually un-aspected planets are working strongly for the person or it can be hard to find. I think personally for Lisa, she might not find this aspect in herself (un-relatable) especially since it’s in retrograde. It can be abit more slow moving for her to realize or self-actualize than others.
Mars in Virgo are focused, detail-oriented and often busy people. They can become nervous if they don’t work a lot (when bp comeback doesn’t come, most likely Lisa NEEDED those modeling ads to keep her nervous energy at bay) they become restless if they feel like they aren’t being productive, and do their best to serve or work towards a project.
Mars in Virgo can be prone to micromanaging alot, and this might affect them personally. They can appear abit scattered or all over the place (trying to do everything at once) as well as micromanaging their feelings or emotions ‘not right now, lets do that later’ - this especially in retrograde, makes them notorious for being harder to anger than even a Capricorn Mars (who actively repress their emotions) Virgo still needs to explode, but more than righteous anger they are more prone to bursts of verbal attacks and creative criticism than anything else.
They’re less confrontational, and would probably not even realize they’re angry or upset until days later. Lisa having this in 3rd decan AND retrograde, she’s much more prone to neglecting her emotions until later or not realizing them at all, with an innate need/influence to keep peace and positive emotions at all times- she can even neglect her own emotions in order to keep the balance or diplomacy in situation.
However, if it overwhelms her (both Virgo and Taurus are earth signs, they’re good at suppressing but that doesn’t mean they don’t feel deeply.) she can breakdown pretty easily when she bottles it up too much and be overwhelmed with emotions. It’s good to realize this sooner and learn how to manage her concerns in a healthier way.
Tumblr media
Conclusion:
God I love her.
That Venus-trine-pluto aspect at 0 degrees really did me in. It sealed my coffin and I’m forever in love with her please write that on my grave stone.
Usually, Venus-Pluto aspected people tend to have a charm to them. The sexy Scorpio type charm? Even in square or opposition aspect it can come across as magnetizing to other people. Lisa having this working FOR her is amazing to her own benefit. She deserves the world and if she could have one thing in life, it’s this. Her dance IS her escape from her mind. Her performance and travelling and being the group helps her with her personal growth and development, it saves her vitality and her life. She found a good output for her energy and she can finally learn how to unwind and relax.
Lisa has a lot of nervous energy about her in her signs and aspects, especially in her Virgo Mars being un-aspected and her Uranus/Jupiter squares. She’s actually doing pretty well not having a lot of difficult or ‘disharmonious’ aspects to worry about or overcome. At the same time, her mind is her biggest enemy and that in itself takes a whole lot of energy to conquer.
💕gosh this was really fun to do, time consuming but less taxing on me to provide in-depth explanation on how they’re all working together. I just had to do them separately. Anyways, I’m really glad I did this because I got really excited for her on that one aspect (as well as other areas in her life) I really hope to explore her chart further, maybe romantically or sexually because I totally pg-ed it out on here to save materials for next time 💕

How Should the Agency Define "Significant" Injury or Illness? Bravery Despite The Wilderness
“Stop walking through the world looking for confirmation that you don’t belong.  You will always find it because you’ve made that your mission.  Stop scouring people’s faces for evidence that you are not enough.  You will always find it because you have made that your goal.  True belonging and self-worth are not goods; we don’t negotiate their value with the world.  The truth about who we are live in our hearts.  Our call to courage is to protect our wild heart against constant evaluation, especially our own.  No one belongs here more than you do.” - BRENE BROWN. BRAVING THE WILDERNESS.
Full transparency: I am tired y’all!  Not just sick of the “new normal” tired.  Not I had a busy week and need a quiet weekend, tired.  Not the kids have been rambunctious all week, we need a vacation, tired.  I am tired, tired.  I am tired of physically battling chronic illness.  I am tired of mentally rationalizing that any of this “new normal” is normal.  I am tired of emotionally shutting down because it’s “all just too much right now” while new blows continue landing.  I am battle worn and it clearly shows.  My hair hasn’t been washed or combed in almost two weeks.  I have masses of hair on areas of my body where there should not be any.  I change from running leggings back into lounging sweats and live there.  I haven’t scheduled an appointment with my doctor in almost a year.  I haven’t seen friends in months now.  I. Am. Tired. and it shows by my lack of self-care.
Everyone wanted to make a big deal when Brittany Spears chopped off her hair.  They said she was crazy, off the rails, unstable.  What if?  What if she had forgotten to take care of herself so long that she had no choice but to cut it off?  What if her shaving her head was the first step she took toward loving herself in months?  What if what you thought was the downward spiral for her, was actually the start of a healing journey, by caring for her hair for the first time in a long time?  I may have gotten to the point of the big chop myself. We all forgo ourselves when we feel bad, scientifically proven.  So how does one exactly go about walking bravely through the wilderness when they look and feel like a homeless crackhead?  Where we always start: exactly where we are.
Merriam-webster.com defines “bravery” as: “the quality or state of having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty : the quality or state of being brave : COURAGE.”  Brittany was courageous.  She looked in the mirror and realized where she was.  She knew exactly what she had to do to fix it, and she just did the fucking work.  She knew she would become a mockery before she cut it.  Honestly, I don’t think she wanted to, but knew she had to.  That’s why I personally think she sat window side in the salon.  She was inviting the world in to watch her transform, knowing y’all would mock her.  She moved forward despite the fear.  She is brave.  She walked in her wilderness.  Her truth.  Be like Brittany.  Go chop your hair- Er… I mean go do self-care!
Wait, wait!  No.  Not bubble baths, candles and cheat meals.  Yeah, okay.  I mean those are good too, but they are not really the self-care I’m talking about.  That’s marketing mumbo jumbo to get you to purchase the hope of “feeling better” so they can make some money.  The self-care I’m talking about involves YOU, not THINGS for you.  Down the rabbit hole we go!
Caring for our feelings.  Western society teaches that you become stronger when you push your emotions down and bury them.  You show maturity or valor for not having a biologically programmed response to a trauma.  They paint an image that as you pick up all this emotional baggage you become stronger, wiser and smarter.  The actual truth without the sprinkles: You are turning yourself into a trash dump for toxicity.  Pushing down feelings does not do anything but create a pressure cooker.  Be brave enough to hit the release valve.  Sit with your feelings and find the value/moral that is being triggered.  Remember yesterday’s message about emotions- feelings are just signposts to keep us on the path toward our values.  Seeds fall to the ground in nature all the time.  They do not grow from the fall, but from the nurturing of water and light.  Your feelings too need airing out to stop weighing you down and inspire growth.  Bring them to light and water them by setting healthy boundaries when your values are being tested.
Caring for our boundaries.  Everyone pushes our buttons from time-to-time.  We sometimes offend people when we don’t mean to.  Sometimes people have the best intentions but lack an adequate understanding to actually help.  People are people.  We are all broken.  That’s why I talk so much about the importance of giving and receiving grace.  But what about the people or situations that aren’t just annoying or confusing?  What about the people who no matter the time of day, they leave you drained?  The ones who consistently go on doing the things that directly trigger your values, after you’ve told them it hurts.  The ones who exhibit behaviors by choice.  Do you know who they are?  No?  Start a journal of your emotional triggers, you’ll find them quickly!  Once you do know, create a cushion, do not go on a blocking rampage.  I mean it!  Just create a space for you to be in control of how their bullshit comes through the fan of life at you.  That’s what it is, a bullshit storm that they know will draw you back into their castle so they don’t have to be alone in misery.  Don’t fall for it.  If it’s not helpful to you, it’s just distracting bullshit.  Dig a moat and stay on your side.  You do not have to answer that facetime call.  You do not have to respond to that text message.  You. Can. Say. No.  Especially when you really mean it.  You have to control the fan here, not the shit flying through it at your face.
Opening to vulnerability.  I know we all HATE, hate, hate this emotion.  We loathe it.  We conjure up images of death, disappointment, fear, loss of control.  We hide it and bury it until an “acceptable” breaking point, usually a tragedy.  I personally struggle with vulnerability.  The second you see me fall off the social radar, I’m struggling.  I shut down and close out.  I suffer alone as to not spread around my negativity.  Sound familiar?  What really is this monster of an emotion that we all want to keep a light on at night around?  Mark Manson so eloquently describes it as: “Vulnerability is consciously choosing to NOT hide your emotions or desires from others.  That’s it. You just freely express your thoughts, feelings, desires, and opinions regardless of what others might think of you.”  Vulnerability is simply authenticity.  Do you still hate it?
Times of fear and uncertainty.  I’ll say it just because we are all already so sick of it: RONA.  It has been 299 days that our family has been social distancing, working, schooling, eating, exercising, growing and bickering, through a global pandemic.  299 days of news and media propaganda spewing.  299 days of losing the very things that we thought were safe.  299 days we have been watching the economy dump wondering if our financial situation would turn.  That is uncertainty.  That is palpable fear- a signpost that our values are disrupted.  So what do we do?  We feel, decide and adapt; just as we were created to do.
Every positive has a negative.  Our brains automatically work on a negative feedback loop.  Western social norms go against the way we are organically wired.  Most of what we think we know is wrong and it has been scientifically proven.  We learned all of this together since the beginning of the new year.  We have grown.  Now that we know better, we have to choose to do better.  That’s the work.  We cannot go on doing the same things and expecting a different result, that’s insanity.  Take the first step into your wilderness.  Instead of seeing the losses of 2020, see the opportunities that it made room for.  Take one step forward from exactly where you are today.  Take another tomorrow.  Every day take one step.  Prioritize your time to include yourself.  Be brave. Hit that do not disturb button. Tell a friend that you are struggling and honestly answer their questions of concern to sit with your feelings. Schedule that walk with a friend you’ve put off for too long. It takes bravery to prioritize yourself but you and your values are worth it.  Do the fucking work and ignore the superego!
That’s self care. Not bath bombs.

The way we use data is a life or death matter – from the refugee crisis to COVID-19
In moments of disaster we frequently flip to information in an try to each perceive the scenario we’re in, and to search for solutions of how you can escape.
In response to COVID-19, governments around the globe have employed algorithms, used information from apps put in on our telephones, alongside CCTV, facial recognition and different information gathering instruments to struggle the pandemic. Knowledge is getting used to drive the each day actions of billions of individuals in a means that many people have by no means earlier than seen. Persons are being instructed to remain dwelling, go to work, put on masks, or ship their youngsters to highschool primarily based on the invisible hand of information.
But 2020 has additionally highlighted the risks of this. The interpretations and assortment of this information usually are not with out their issues – medical doctors and politicians wanting on the similar information can draw wildly completely different conclusions about the precise plan of action.
No doubt, we must be harnessing all of the instruments we are able to within the struggle to avoid wasting lives, however the pandemic has additionally introduced many points with information mapping to the fore. COVID-19 disproportionately impacts the poorest folks in lots of nations, in addition to black and Asian communities. That is isn’t any small half attributable to data-driven laws designed to cease the unfold of the illness; typically modelled on assumptions made by the individuals who design and run them.
These inequalities already existed, however fashions that gradual a diffusion by the closing of workplaces, diminished transport and residential education put huge pressures on the poorest and most weak members of society, who usually are not privileged sufficient to alter their working or dwelling preparations. As digital applied sciences are additional launched, corresponding to cell monitor and hint, these communities shall be marginalised even additional. Even within the richest nations, these and not using a smartphone shall be missed from any digital tracing apps designed to guard folks.

Whereas these practices are newly confronting to many, such applied sciences – and their failings – have lengthy been used to form the lives, and deaths, of tens of millions around the globe. Within the digital age, mapping and information proceed to be seen as a fix-all. Extra folks than ever are subjected to having their lives dictated not by elected officers, however by black field algorithms, maps, and information visualisations. As our makes an attempt to carry the pandemic at bay proceed, we should take a look at classes from different crises and push for a extra simply world.
To do that, it’s essential that folks perceive the slippery high quality of information. Statistics appear stable to many individuals. However information can mislead, and understanding how this occurs is a big step in the precise course of utilizing information to enhance the lives of tens of millions of individuals around the globe, and to tackling world crises corresponding to COVID-19.
There are three principal points with information.
This text is a part of Dialog Insights The Insights workforce generates long-form journalism derived from interdisciplinary analysis. The workforce is working with teachers from completely different backgrounds who’ve been engaged in initiatives aimed toward tackling societal and scientific challenges.
1. Darkish information
The primary problem appears on the floor the best to repair. Darkish information refers to information that isn’t collected in any respect. Many individuals consider that if we collected sufficient information about all the things then we may resolve any problem. But it’s inconceivable to gather all the things: there’ll at all times be darkish information.
We don’t, for instance, acquire information about or from youngsters in the identical means as adults due to legal guidelines round consent. Knowledge is commonly collected by instruments that aren’t obtainable to everybody – cell phones share large quantities of knowledge, however not all people has a cellphone.
The actual hassle comes attributable to what are often called epistemic and ideological assumptions. These assumptions imply that even with the most effective intentions, we can not collect information about issues that we assume we don’t want, or that we have no idea that we’d like information about. Stark examples embody how regularly ladies are excluded from trials and testing, both forgotten about, or primarily based upon assumptions they’re the identical as males. This will have lethal penalties.
At instances our biases additionally push us in direction of not gathering information that we sense goes in opposition to our personal pursuits or views of the world. A surprisingly highly effective urge to retain our establishment paralyses us from breaking by this barrier.
2. Knowledge positivism
The problems of darkish information are carefully linked to a different problem, often called information positivism. This pertains to what we do with the information now we have captured.
It’s all however inconceivable to current all the information we discover. This may be as a result of now we have an excessive amount of of it, or as a result of we are attempting to inform a selected story with our information. As we flip the information in to maps and visualisations, we should make decisions about what’s and isn’t included, which regularly takes the type of prioritising one kind of information over one other.
Knowledge that matches effectively with conventional mapping practices shall be extra more likely to be included on a map than different types of data. This will flip extraordinarily complicated and competing units of concepts into overly easy units of information, which in flip is reworked into a good additional simplified information visualisation. These visualisations are hardly ever questioned, as a result of the best way they’re made is past the experience of most individuals. The experience of the creator is trusted wholesale – they create a false sense of certainty, however one we maintain on to, particularly in the event that they reinforce our establishment.
3. Knowledge washing
Then there’s the difficulty of information washing. Let’s assume that you’ve prevented the issues of darkish information and picked up all the things, together with the information you didn’t know you wanted, and that you’ve navigated information positivism within the cleansing and getting ready of your information.
You then come to current your findings. Maybe they don’t actually present the story you wished, or present the alternative of what you thought – what do you do? Do you tweak issues so they appear completely different? Do you skip that diagram and transfer to a different that exhibits one thing nearer to your speculation? Do you select to not share something in any respect?
These seem to be simple inquiries to reply, simple to remain on the proper aspect of moral follow. However even with the most effective of intentions we are able to dismiss our personal information when it doesn’t conform to pre-held assumptions. We would inform ourselves we will need to have made a mistake in information assortment, so shouldn’t share it. Or we would assume: that doesn’t inform story, I’ll depart it out. Or maybe: this must be extra dramatic, I’ll change the colors and design to make it pop.
These usually are not at all times disingenuous, however these seemingly harmless selections conceal or obscure information and data. They’re laborious to keep away from even with the most effective of intentions, and with regards to problems with controversy, the most effective of intentions is commonly left wanting.
In turning folks into pure information, life and dying selections are made about folks with out their consent. These are the dehumanising results of an algorithm-driven world.
Classes from historical past
Mapping and information visualisation have lengthy been utilized in instances of disaster to assist us make sense of what’s occurring, and to seek out methods forwards that may protect lives and create a greater future. Outstanding examples embody Thomas Shapter’s 1832 maps of cholera in Exeter, UK, adopted by the extra well-known maps of cholera deaths produced by John Snow in London. These maps and their authors have been credited with bringing new understanding of waterborne illness and saving many lives.
Florence Nightingale, whose identify was given over to the emergency hospitals constructed across the UK within the wake of COVID-19, was additionally a statistician.
In 1861, as a part of her session to the US military about look after Civil Battle casualties, Nightingale made information visualisations, and plenty of them. She created bar charts, stacked bars, honeycomb density plots, and 100% space plots.
Nightingale’s information visualisations weren’t about simply exhibiting what was occurring, they have been designed to name for change; to point required reform. She additionally invented a brand new kind of chart to assist her arguments: a comparative polar-area diagram recognized right now because the Nightingale rose (she referred to as them “wedges”). Her most well-known diagrams confirmed the adjustments in survival charges of sufferers following sanitary enhancements, corresponding to washing arms usually, and emphasised the effectiveness of those enhancements by distinction in dimension.

Nightingale, Shapter, Snow, and plenty of others have used charts and diagrams to construct graphic arguments and easy-to-understand comparisons that saved many lives. However when wanting again at them, we frequently solely think about the ultimate product (map or chart), reasonably than the method of their creation. But on the time, these works have been extensively dismissed, and infrequently misinterpreted as supporting the prevailing ideas of the interval.
There have been many who didn’t wish to enact the reforms proposed by Nightingale, though they’re now seen as transformative in how hospitals are run. And Snow’s maps grew to become extra well-known than Shapter’s not solely as a result of they have been of London, however due to the evocative story of him striding onto Broad Avenue and tearing off the deal with of the group water pump. What’s forgotten is that this act was required exactly as a result of his information and mappings have been initially misinterpreted by those that selected to see Snow’s maps as supporting their very own theories – an instance of affirmation bias the place we learn information in a means that fits our personal views.
Each Snow and Nightingale saved numerous lives by their information work, however even they got here up in opposition to lots of the problems with darkish information, information positivism and misinterpretation.

Within the digital age, the place information is collected on a large scale, typically with out consent, and is more and more organised, sorted and interpreted by computer systems and algorithms, information has turn into seen as each a repair all for all the things, and a harmful commodity. The usage of information to trace folks and dictate their actions can imply the distinction between life and dying in a really actual and current sense. Whereas that has been made clear to many people in relation to COVID-19, there are a lot of extra tales of information, disaster and the struggle for survival.
In our new e book, Mapping Disaster, we take a look at the experiences of those that have been mapped or had their complicated lives diminished to information, aerial pictures or reviews. From this we’re ready to attract out higher methods of working, and higher understandings of the assorted results the key world of information has on our on a regular basis lives.
One in every of our examples is the case of the Mediterranean migrant disaster.
Life, dying and information
The Mediterranean Sea is a spot that for a lot of conjures pictures of sun-kissed seashores, superb waterfront eating and turquoise seas. However this stretch of water can be some of the closely policed on the earth. All actions within the area, whether or not deemed authorized or not, are extensively mapped and monitored by the European Union.

Whereas particular person nations on the Mediterranean have lengthy fortified their borders, the formation of the EU successfully created a single border alongside the northern shores. Since then, European states have continued to place in place an ever extra complete, and complicated, system for monitoring and exchanging details about irregular migrants making an attempt to succeed in the continent.
Operating beneath the label EUROSUR, the system combines high-resolution satellite tv for pc pictures, long-endurance drones, automated vessel identification programs and seaborne navy radars that permit for situational reviews and danger analyses in subsequent to actual time. These reviews give each day updates on “efficiently” intercepted migrant vessels.
However this extremely refined instrument of mapping the actions of migrants is just desirous about those that are stopped. The in depth databases held by EU states maintain subsequent to no details about those that die or go lacking as they try to hunt refuge. Those that make it onto European shores, in contrast, are rigorously screened for biometric information, together with digital fingerprints, iris scans and medical checks, and in addition for private particulars about their lives to confirm their identification.
Based on the Worldwide Organisation for Migration (IOM), greater than 19,000 folks have drowned or gone lacking on their option to Europe over the past decade. These figures are solely estimates: there isn’t a complete system in place to doc migrant fatalities throughout EU member states. European governments don’t think about migrant deaths a part of their obligation and so don’t maintain a daily monitor report of them. This leaves humanitarian businesses like IOM depending on eyewitness accounts and reviews from search and rescue NGOs, health workers or the media.
The lack of awareness concerning migrant deaths reveals how patchy actual time monitoring of motion throughout borders actually is. It additionally serves political agendas, the place information on the “danger” to Europe from migration can simply be discovered, however information on the true life and dying dangers of crossing the Mediterranean is occluded from public data. This makes it simpler to current migrants as a menace, reasonably than as refugees placing all the things on the road to hunt security.
And for Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Company, this offers a handy backdrop to legitimise the rising militarisation of Europe’s borders beneath the pretext of stopping additional deaths and human struggling.
Alongside the border, digital maps and statistical charts function to bolster the political and social goals of the organisations and governments that collate them. Knowledge is selectively collected, and selectively introduced by the EU and European governments, extending Europe’s migration coverage of deterrence and containment deep into the digital area.
Within the particular context of the Mediterranean, this selective studying of information not solely minimises the possibilities of profitable asylum purposes for these lingering within the reception centres of Greece and Turkey, it additionally permits governments and the EU as an entire to evade any authorized and political accountability for the human value of border policing. By not gathering information on those that drown, the EU can disguise the truth that for all its refined mapping and monitoring applied sciences, they’ve little interest in utilizing the information to avoid wasting lives, or for rescuing males, ladies and kids misplaced at sea.
No data of deaths means no data of what number of European governments watched drown.
Radical information mapping
That stated, Europe’s wilful “unseeing” of migrants has not gone uncontested. Quite a few civil society initiatives and humanitarian activists have made it a degree to maintain a daily monitor report of those that die or go lacking and to carry Europe to account.
Initiatives such because the Record of Deaths, compiled by organisations corresponding to UNITED and FORTRESS Europe, meticulously doc each reported incident, utilizing these figures for advocating a radical revision of European asylum coverage. Whereas these counter-mappings actually handle to disrupt the wall of silence surrounding the human value of border policing, the dying lists have accomplished little to disrupt or redirect the priorities of the state.
The transnational community Alarm Telephone marks a uncommon exception on this regard. Alarm Telephone provides a 24/7 hotline for migrants in misery. The organisation secures their rescue by notifying nationwide coastguards and port authorities of unfolding emergencies at sea. Utilizing a mix of cell phones and on-line messaging apps corresponding to Fb, Viber, WhatsApp and Skype, alongside logistical platforms corresponding to AIS (The worldwide Automated identification system used for vessel monitoring) and name administration software program, they try to preempt deaths, and immediate motion to rescue folks prone to drowning.
The organisation has aided hundreds of individuals in misery. The summer time of 2020 was an particularly tough one. With Europe’s borders closed tighter than ever, Alarm Telephone was inundated with calls. Within the seven days following August 13, almost 900 folks on 14 boats referred to as Alarm Telephone with pleas for assist. Alarm Telephone raised the alert, and whereas some have been helped to security, both in Europe or Libya, greater than 260 folks perished or stay lacking.
By carry collectively expertise, networking capacities, and thru solidarity and compassion the volunteer community is ready to each help migrants in instances of hassle, and to assist them go extra successfully beneath the radar of the EU. The hotline is greater than only a misery name: it brings collectively the data of migrants into efficient “maps” that help within the logistics of crossing the med. In doing so it additionally highlights the wilful misuse, and sporadic information collections of the EU member states.
A warning
Loads will be discovered from the information mapping of the migrant disaster. Maps and information can solely ever be partial representations of actuality, however as we collect increasingly more information we will be lured into considering that these representations are infallible.
But, it’s clear from the instance above that the processes in place don’t protect life: they’re instruments of management reasonably than help. There are glimmers of hope within the counter-mapping initiatives which have arisen to present voice to those that are condemned to silence as they search a brand new life. However even essentially the most well-intentioned initiatives can fall foul of confusion information. Knowledge tends to have a lifetime of its personal.
COVID-19 has introduced the world of data-driven disaster administration to the doorstep of the entire world, however these usually are not new experiences. Many individuals have already been diminished to information factors. From the Mediterranean to highschool grades, lives are more and more dictated by algorithm, computation, and the biases constructed into these applied sciences. The way in which by which we use information is closely influenced by politics, a want to take care of the established order and by acutely aware and unconscious selections made at each stage of the method.
So we should always query information: how it’s collected, and the way it’s deployed. However information can be vital, and we should not dismiss all of it outright. The world has seen a push-back in opposition to science and a progress in “different info”. The rise in anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, 5G conspiracy theorists and coronavirus deniers has proven how harmful this may be. Such arguments push backwards, not forwards. They don’t search to grasp extra, however are sustaining a establishment.
Whereas some would possibly attempt to twist the arguments we’ve introduced right here with a view to reject science, we’re as a substitute saying that we should always ask questions that take our understanding additional. It’s close to inconceivable to get rid of points attributable to darkish information, information washing, and information positivism. This may be purposefully, or unintended, however the results will be far reaching.
So, subsequent time you take a look at a map and or information visualisation, ask: who is that this for? Whose energy does it improve or consolidate? Who’s lacking from the information? Who was by no means requested, forgotten or excluded? Who loses? And the way can we do it higher?
