friends, enemies, lurkers, we've made it to the
Whump Of All Time Finals!
What's the whumpiest whump of all time? Help us decide!
Find links and propaganda under the cut. Quarterfinalist and later match-ups are untagged, so your votes and reblogs matter! Make sure you click through to the main blog to find the run-off poll to crown third place, as well!
ROTK:
(spider attack, rescue)
"The Lord of The Rings, when Frodo gets bitten by a giant spider and left for dead by Sam at the end of The Two Towers, and then when Sam finds him in The Return of the King being held prisoner and whipped by an orc."
The Young Blood Chronicles (Save Rock and Roll's music videos, Fall Out Boy):
(link)
"Everyone gets bloodied, bruised, beaten up, tortured, rescued, limbs are amputated - it's brutal. Alone Together is particularly strong."
sorry for being late, but you want YBC propaganda? then you're getting YBC propaganda. I know you're a FOB fan, but I will be writing this for the benefit of those who don't know what YBC is, for better propaganda purposes! and yeah this is gonna be LONG. sorry.
So! The Youngblood Chronicles (shortened to YBC) is a series of 11 music videos made by the band Fall Out Boy, for their album Save Rock And Roll (you know this album, it's the one with My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark on it). The whole thing is quite short, less than fifty minutes long (even shorter if you don't count the uncut version's credits!!), and every single music video has some element of whump in it. This propaganda is gonna break down each individual music vid, and at i'll also talk a little bit about the irl context the album was written in, and why even THAT can be a little bit whumpy if you're insane like me!
(note: i'm going in the original release order over the uncut order, hence why i'm starting with MSKWYDITD instead of The Phoenix)
My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark: Arguably the least whump-y out of all of them, but man, seeing all of Fall Out Boy's discography and memorabilia be burnt while people are dancing around the destruction? Man, when you know the real life stuff (the reception the band had in 2009, leading to them to take a three year hiatus)... and at the end, you see four guys bound in the back of a van!! And that van is getting burnt!! Burn everything you love and burn the... ashes.
The Phoenix: NOW here's the first of MANY whump tastes you'll get. Patrick Stump, the singer/cutie of the band, gets kidnapped, tied to a chair, has his hand CHOPPED OFF and mailed to his bandmate/best friend Pete Wentz, then gets tied down and utterly tortured by women who are laughing at his misery the entire time, getting prodded and stabbed by tools for... well, you'll see. By the end of the video, Pete and the other two members of FOB (Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley) have been kidnapped by these mysterious women too, with Pete specifically getting kidnapped by the blonde woman he was in bed with when Patrick's hand got delivered to him. If you enjoy cute boys getting tied down, covered in blood, and writhing around like worms while getting tortured... well you'll enjoy all of YBC but specifically you'll enjoy this!! I did :D! The war is won, before it's begun, release the doves, surrender love...
Young Volcanoes: Good news, FOB has been reunited! Bad news, by the women who dismembered Patrick! And now all the band members are tied to chairs, hooked up to IVs full of god knows what types of drugs, and blindfolded (all except Patrick). They are then forced to drink, snort hard drugs, and are force fed Patrick's organs! Yep, all four of them are forced to eat their lead singer's guts, and are so fucking drugged up they don't even realize what's happening (and now you know what the women were doing to him in the last mv, and you even get a nice little shot of the hack job of stitching him back up)!! Patrick hallucinates everyone having fun, but of course, at the end, all of them are knocked out because of the drugs. Americana, exotica, do you wanna feel a little beautiful baby?
Alone Together: This is the song the OG propaganda mentioned, and for good reason. All four of them are shipped off into little personalized torture rooms, and, well, tortured! Pete is able to break out and even steals the hook from the girl who was torturing him, but little does he know that'll be his own undoing... also, in general, this song has some whumpy elements, specifically the line "my heart is like a stallion/they love it more when it's broke-in"... but notice how easy it is to hear "broke-in" as "broken"! At the end of the video, Pete is at least able to find Patrick (Joe and Andy have NOT been having a good time, either!! But sadly, they aren't found by Pete, but Pete DOES find Big Sean), and is even able to attach the hook to the stump (ha!) where his hand used to be. But something is clearly wrong with Patrick now. His eyes are yellow, and as the song ends, we hold on him, sneering and twitching. This is the road to ruin - and we're started at the end...
The Mighty Fall: First off if you say this is the worst song off of SRAR I will hunt you for sport. OKAY ANYWAYS, chronologically this comes after MSKWYDITD, and yeah, the four guys are the members of FOB. Pete is able to free himself with Patrick's new hook hand, and is able to get the other three out while Pete is hacking up a lung from the fire they just barely escaped. But they're not done getting their shit rocked yet. A gang of children show up (the leader being the kid Patrick waved at right before he was kidnapped back in the Phoenix MV), and proceed to separate them and beat the living shit out of them. The leader kid who's chasing Patrick plays something on a boombox... which triggers Patrick to go yellow-eyed again (from here on out i'll call it "going Youngblood" or "Youngblood self"). It was confirmed in the commentary track that ANY music would cause him to go Youngblood. And knowing Patrick IRL fucking loves to create/compose music... yeah! Take something he loves and turn it into something that drives him insane!! I'm normal!! And also the irl parallel you could draw to his solo career doing the same thing to him (on a less uh Dramatic level but you know)!!! Ouch!!!! Big Sean is able to save Patrick, but at the cost of his own life (and a killer rap verse... HELL YEAH I'M A DICK GIRL, ADDICTED TO YOU). Oh, how the mighty fall in love...
Just One Yesterday: The last vestiges of comfort you're gonna get for a WHILE. The four are separated, getting even more beaten up, Pete vomits up a snake, Andy gets his shit rocked by a homeless guy, Joe has to use white sheets as a makeshift tourniquet bc his leg got fucked up in The Mighty Fall MV, and Patrick is picked up by a kind stranger (hi Foxes! you have a very pretty voice! PLEASE KEEP YOUR HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL!). And finally, finally we get a hope spot. Fall Out Boy is reunited (the part where Andy just grabs onto Patrick's arm, in disbelief they're both alive... augh!!! AUGH!!!!), and for a moment, it seems they've been delivered to a hospital... before Foxes' eyes go completely black, looking at Patrick... and turns on the radio. She's able to trigger the Youngblood. And now Patrick is gone. The other three scramble into the hospital, Patrick not far behind, determined to kill them to stop the noise in his head. If Heaven's grief brings Hell's reign, then I'd trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday...
Where Did The Party Go: Patrick, now fully consumed by the Youngblood brainwashing, is now stalking his bandmates in a hospital. Patrick is seeing visions of the hospital as an abandoned party, Andy has to painfully disinfect the wounds he's gotten, Pete is able to call for the police, and Joe... oh, poor Joe. He barricades himself into a room, but not well enough. Patrick finds him, and kills him, slitting his throat with the hook hand, showing no remorse at all... until Andy and Pete find them. The Youngblood wears off, and Patrick looks to what he's done, and is horrified at what he's done to his friend. And, bad news for him, the police are here, ready to arrest the murderer. All Andy and Pete can do is watch as tears roll down Patrick's eyes. And for the extra IRL context, this was the first song written for the album that made Pete and Patrick realize they had to get FOB back together... so lets match that with a music video where the member who helped get the band together in the first place dies. By the hands of the kid he found. Let's fade away together, one dream at a time...
Death Valley: Joe gets... uh, a little comfort? I mean, he thinks he's getting sent to heaven but goes to hell, buuuuut I think doing drugs in rock and roll hell with Tommy Lee is actually a pretty sweet deal, better than the deal the other three got! Pete and Andy are being interrogated while Patrick is in a jail cell. We find out that the cult that kidnapped them, Silence the Noise, is lead by Pete's girlfriend from WAAAAY back in the Phoenix MV, Courtney Love. And at the end of the MV... Patrick is bailed out of jail by Silence the Noise. They have him again. And this time, they're not gonna let him walk out until he's fully under their control. 'Cause tonight it's just fire alarms and losing you...
Rat a Tat: Silence the Noise has Patrick, and they utterly brainwash him, A Clockwork Orange style, with electroshock stimulation to keep him from looking away or closing his eyes, until there is nothing left. Patrick Stump does not exist anymore. Only the Youngblood, pliant under the control of Silence the Noise, tasked to destroy what he once loved; music. Andy dies at the hands of the cult, and now Pete has to protect a briefcase, the thing that got them into this mess, and keep it away from Silence the Noise, all while his best friend hunts him down. Are you ready for another bad poem?
Miss Missing You: THE WHUMPIEST OF THE WHUMP. What if we were best friends but you've been driven insane and I know the only way to stop you is to kill you and it was my fault you got into this mess and I was the one who gave you the weapon that will be my own undoing. What if we both died at the same time. What if we died, both of us failing the mission we had before us. What if that was a reference to one of their first music videos. What if this song was originally written for Patrick's solo album but he realized it was more of a Fall Out Boy song so it was scrapped until now. What if there's a legit argument to be made that half the lyrics for this song was written by Patrick. What if we were both boys. Grips walls, yeha i'm normal. If you don't watch ANY other music vid, watch Miss Missing You. Sometimes before it gets better, the darkness gets bigger. The person that you'd take a bullet for is behind the trigger.
Save Rock And Roll: And our final track gives us a final bit of comfort. Patrick is able to overcome the Youngblood, and gets into heaven, where all of FOB is finally, finally reunited. God (aka Elton John) gives them new instruments and brings them back to earth, so they can do what they love; play music together. Which just so happens to release people from the control of Silence the Noise! But, because we can't have nice things, a cult within Silence the Noise got a hold of the briefcase, and summoned a spirit that starts to kill everyone. FOB stands together, and blasts the evil spirit, the blood coming up to the gates of heaven and covering Elton John in it. And... that's how it ends. No true resolution. Just Elton John covered in blood, as the song fades out. Oh, no! Wherever I go, go! Trouble seems to follow! I only plugged in to save rock and roll!
UH. AGAIN I APOLOGIZE FOR THE LENGTH. but i really wanted to express just how much WHUMP they manage to fit into less than fifty minutes, all backed by an amazing album colored by the three years they were apart. colored by how they grew, colored by how bad the hiatus was for Patrick specifically, colored by how Confessions of a Pariah got Pete to reach out to help him, and this album came out of it, Fall Out Boy came back out of it, and now here we are, ten years later, with the title track being performed every night for their concert, with all the band singing the final lines together, and the line you are what you love, not who loves you hitting every single night.
SORRY. LISTEN TO FALL OUT BOY. thanks for letting me rant.

Cowboy Carter Review
sorry if i write a lot. i like to yap lol
Ameriican Requiem- i'm a huge sucker for a sitar so i was gripped in from the beginning. i grew up on country music (mainly 90s/early 2000s) and so when she showed up at the CMAs and performed with the chicks it was a childhood dream. but as a person who liked country music around the time 9/11 happened, it's only become even more racist since. the way they treated her that night even though she was one of, if not THE, best performer of the night was so upsetting to watch. even as the best artist on the planet, at the top of her game, she's always going to work a million times harder than any of her peers. i'm so proud of her being able to make a song like to this to put her thoughts out on the whole night that night.
Blackbiird- obviously everyone has heard this song before. i was unaware of the actual backstory to the song since i don't follow the beatles too much (i like george harrison but that's about it lol). i was not aware that the song the song was written for black women during the civil rights movement. i assumed the song was mainly written by john lennon who to my knowledge was kind of a grifter when it came to his activism. having this song come right after ameriican requiem is so poetic.
16 Carriages- shockingly i was able to avoid hearing this song in full until tonight. i tend to only do one single per release and so texas hold em was the one. this song is so heartbreaking because i think about all the kids in the entertainment industry who can probably relate to this song all too well
Protector- these songs she makes for her kids... i'm gonna need her to stop. not because they're bad but i straight up can't listen to blue and probably this song because i want a mom like this 😭
My Rose- i hate that this is an interlude. it's so beautiful and not to be dramatic should've been 10 hours long
Smoke Hour • Willie Nelson- idk what to say about this one lol
Texas Hold 'Em- i love this song. the only problem i have with it is it sounds too clean. like the production sounds too clean. maybe it sounds better on the radio where the quality is lower than streaming but its definitely a song that needs to be played not so isolated.
Bodyguard- there's something in this song. she channeled carole king for this on or something. it's so good instantly a top 20 if not top 10 song of hers through her whole discography.
Dolly P- once again idk what to say about this one its too short to say anything
Jolene- i mean i think the same way about her version as i do about dolly's version. why are we getting mad at these women when we should be getting mad at the men?? take away that beyonce is beyonce for a second. if she was a normal lady and this girl was unaware her man was taken, isn't that more on him than anyone? he's letting it happen.
Daughter- her voice in this song is insanity. the control she has is unmatched truly.
Spaghettii- the beat omgggg. i know this would hit so hard in a mashup with "my house" i'm obsessed.
Alliigator Tears- just from hearing snippets of the country music that's on the radio nowadays, i think this might be one of the few songs from this album that they will eat up. i'm not saying that as a diss at all. i love this song alot especially after a second listen.
Smoke Hour II- i guess i can add on here a random tid bit. i made a country playlist in preperation for the album to come out. i made it on valentine's day. tell me why i named it KNTRY. i didn't even know the "radio station" she has on the album was called that lol.
Just for Fun- i don't listen to lana del rey anymore. i had a small time during last year where i did but then she got real messy again and signed that letter thanking joe biden. that being said this song sounds identical to "norman fucking rockwell". which is a compliment because both are good songs. keep jack antonoff away from beyonce though. that's the good thing about beyonce is she doesn't sound like everyone else which he makes everyone do (yes i am a fan of him but i'm critical of his production lol)
II Most Wanted- i'm sorry i've never been a fan of miley cyrus (except for the song she did for black mirror and that one EP she put out). i want to like this song because i like aspects of the song but it being a miley cyrus song with a beyonce feature is not want i want.
Levii's Jeans- this is also a collab i'm not a fan of. i actually enjoy post malone but i would've liked to see them in a more upbeat song.
Flamenco- idk how to take this song. it's stunning as usual. my thoughts on the lyrics though is she's kinda talking to fans maybe like the OG like destiny's child fans who have started to leave because she's starting to experiment more with her sound and they miss her old sound. i would love to know her take on this song in particular. because i know so many artists who decide to change their sound throughout each release are terrified of losing fans because they're so stuck on a certain sound.
The Linda Martell Show- another one i can't say much on since it's an interlude
Ya Ya- now.... remember what i said about bodyguard??? easily top 10. idk where on my ranking but it's there. the interpolation of "these boots were made for walking" and "good vibrations". there's something about that old soul rock sound that gets me every single time. i know that it doesn't sound anything alike but "freedom" has that same vibe, where it takes alot from old 60s blues soul rock. this is gonna hit so good on tour!
Oh Louisiana- i will say i really like this interlude. second favorite out of the ones with actual music
Desert Eagle- another song she chose to make extremely short when it should've been hours long... come on B
Riiverdance- its a fun and cute song. i think the beat is good but i think i like it more on my first listen.
II Hands II Heaven- i'm hoping this will finally click for me. im seeing everyone really love this song but idk whats not clicking for me. i'll definitely keep listening to it though maybe someday.
Tyrant- someone said this is the thique of cowboy carter and yeah i can definitely hear it. it's a sexy song and it's a fun song. definitely like it alot more after a second listen
Sweet • Honey • Buckiin'- her sampling "i fall to pieces" in this song is so special to me. i do want someone to take this "honey" and add it to the end of pure/honey though i wonder if it would sound any good. i think sweet and buckiin are the best songs out of the three of these.
Amen- i love how this really rounds out the album, calling back to the first song. it feels and is a very emotional song. don't know if i'll go back to it only because i think it could make me cry lol
overall, i think it's a solid album. if we're comparing the acts, which idk how you can because they're two distinctly different sounds, i would probably still go with renaissance but there's still so many solid songs on this album that are now some of my top faves. usually i rate out of 10 but it feels too low tbh, so i'm rating it out of 100. it will definitely grow on me just like renaissance did. 89/100.

Jimin, dude, man, bro, wtf? What in actual goddamn fuck???
Listen, there like 3 Jimin solo songs I like and I am not a big fan of some of his vocal choices but let me tell you I was really hyped and hooked when the teasers came out. The drama, war anthem-ness, the grandeur of everything, I liked it all. So I was quite disappointed when the news of him rapping came out because I've heard him rap before and it was bad, and I especially was reluctant to watch the whole MV after I heard a snippet of it on my tl (the stylistically autotuned rap part, yeah). I was afraid to be disappointed after such great teasers.
despite my fears I finally watched the MV... fuck... WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK PARK JIMIN??? It's so damn good! Even the rap part??? I LOVED it. Separately it doesn't sound very nice but combined and mixed it somehow works well. And his stylistic vocal choices, the way he changes his voice all the time, it's amazing, it keeps you hooked and anticipating what comes next, it keeps surprising you, even shocked at some point. I haven't been a fan of bts songs since the fake love era (even black swan is not IT for me, it's really good but not THAT great) so it says a lot. this one is easily one of my faves EVER in their discography.
The song is a statement. A grand opening. Empowering.
BTW, the song is totally a type of song that you would play in your car while driving around with your friends and singing-shouting along. Wow, just wow.

Ask 2: Opinions on set me free pt. 2 seem to be divided in some circles 👀👀👀 ofc because of the vocal processingz that’s a common complaint for so many years already lol. I mean Pdogg is the main producer of the album so idk what they expected… personally i love the song and i think the vocal processing works but i think i can understand some people have different tastes and expectations… at the end of that day it was a choice consciously chosen by jimin and his producers. It’s there for a reason imo. I’m happy though that jimin really tried something different!!!!! So many people were expecting a ballad for this title instead we got a banger lol… and like you said Yoongi’s style is obvious even when he doesnt have a hand in making it directly… now i’m so curious what like crazy will sound like!!!! But i wanna ask if youll be making a post for set me free bpp???
***
Posting these two asks now because my inbox is already getting out of control and between getting zero sleep and a flight I've got to catch in exactly 73 minutes, I'd rather briefly get out some thoughts now, regardless of if they're coherent or not, because I don't know when next I'll have time.
Hi Anon(s),
I don't think I'll ever write a full review for this song, because there's a lot about it I don't want to talk about, a lot I don't want to share and would rather keep to myself.
That said,
Everything about Set Me Free Pt. 2 is right up my alley and objectively brilliant. Every single thing about it: the melody, the autotune, the chants, the rap, the fact the whole thing plays out in the same prison, the way Jimin uses his body as a canvas for inscriptions that only enhance his storytelling, the performance.
I have nothing to say to anyone who doesn't like this or that about it. Rapper Jimin was in my wishlist for PJM1 so... and I'm a hiphop head who listens to Travis Scott-type autotune at least a couple times a day. Plus I've got Yoongi, that nasty, autotune-loving, foul-mouthed cat as my bias. Joon and Hobi aren't that much nicer either. Anybody reading this to hear me say something critical about this song should wake up and smell the matcha.
Some things I want to gush about:
First of all, the instrumentals. PDogg went stuuuuuuuuuuuupid on this track goddamn.
Tumblr media
This song is pure trap. An orchestral, haunting trap anthem is what Set Me Free Pt. 2 is.
It is so sick. So maddening in how good it is. No wonder he was so excited about Jimin ending k-pop in 2023, the song he produced is easily the best produced Korean song so far and believe me when I tell you that is really saying something, because the competition this year has been stiff.
*
The Vocals
Jimin's voice is the most emotive in BTS. That's one reason I love it. Another reason is because nobody's vocals in BTS, in k-pop, fuck, in all of Korea, drips as much sauce as Park Jimin's. I've said before, Jimin sounds inhuman almost, I describe his voice as serrated steel coated in honey and wrapped in silk because it sounds distinctly metallic, but can be oddly soothing. But with Jimin, there's a tone he takes sometimes that has this undercurrent of nasty, of unapologetic vulgarity, and in Set Me Free Pt. 2, he uses autotune to amplify it to brain-piercing perfection.
PDogg brilliantly uses autotune to aid Jimin in sending a message.
The shrillest, most distorted we hear Jimin is when he raps after the first chorus, and that's by design. The use of autotune in this song is intentional, and we can see this because every time it ratchets up, Jimin is being crude and uninhibited - as though it's a second voice, an alter-ego, or Jimin himself speaking the deepest truest thoughts he holds, pushing them to the surface after suppressing them for nine years.
PDogg has used this sort of autotune on Jimin's voice before, in the second chorus of Black Swan (timestamp: 2:24 - 2:50)
youtube
It's hidden in the backing vocals in Black Swan but felt in full cathartic force in SMF pt 2. And it feels incredible.
Stream:

The Message/Lyrics
This is the part I don't want to write about because I'd rather keep my thoughts to myself. Not because I have special insight or think I've discovered something no one else sees or whatever, but because it's the only thing about this song that stayed within my expectations of who I think Jimin is. Plus I'm certain various interpretations will be offered by many other bloggers, so I'm okay sitting this one out.
That's the most I'll say now.

Gracie Abrams is, as the kids say, the moment. Since releasing her first EP—“It's not been very long, but it feels like a million years”—the singer-songwriter has graduated to opening for Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour. Now enjoying the success of her debut album, Good Riddance, Abrams will be touring again with stops in Europe this fall—all before she turns 24.
Her third grade teacher had the class keep “tiny palm-size journals. It wasn't a grand plan to get us into storytelling, but it did feel very serious to me. I was immediately drawn to this private place where you could talk about anything. I lost the journal and it was my first real heartbreak.”
“It’s not to paint my parents in a negative light. I mean, they're the fucking best of all time,” says the middle child of director, writer, and producer J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot's Katie McGrath. “But my strict curfew was not because I was like, ‘There's this concert I'm really passionate about, please, please, please, let me go.’ It was like, ‘There's this boy that I've heard of once who's having a party,’ and they're like, ‘Cool. You're not going.’ I was more observing the clichés of LA than participating in them.”
She credits Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Phoebe Bridgers—whom she discovered at age 12 on YouTube—as “these formative flags, waving a little bit, that changed my life.”
Attending an all-girls high school and an all-women college, Barnard, helped Abrams find her voice. “I've personally found that you're removing a factor that is so real when you grow up as a girl—these social dynamics where there's a certain sexism.” In school, “I felt zero fear or hesitation to raise my hand every single time I had a thought about anything.”
Abrams watches Swift's show every night she opens for her, getting a master class in how to “maintain intimacy as you grow and step away from 200-cap venues. She does 80,000 people three times a weekend, and regardless of where you are in the stadium—because I've walked around and looked at different views—it feels like just you and her. And she's the biggest star in the world.”
She’s an avowed Swiftie herself. “Every formative memory in my life is paired with a Taylor Swift song that helped me get through. My boyfriend the other day did the thing where we shuffled her discography and played a song for one second…I got them all.”
She first heard from Swift via a call from an unknown number inviting Abrams to the superstar's birthday. Abrams checked it out by calling a mutual producer: “Can you confirm something for me, or is there someone just trying to break my heart?”
Ahead of her first concert performance ever, “I was vomiting because I was so scared. My anxiety had just kind of reached this peak; I was like, ‘I can't do this. I don't want to do this. This isn't for me. I like to write by myself. I don't want to be around other people. This is private.’ And the second I got onstage, I was just so happy. I was so proven wrong. I felt so immediately like the songs that I was singing onstage were no longer about me, but it was about all of the people that were in the room that night. And that's kind of carried on every time I've been lucky enough to play a show since then.”

How do I get into THE IDOLM@STER?
...is a very frequent question we idolmaster fans get!
I recently got a message from someone asking me if I could make a post answering this question, and I said I would try. I'm very bad at explaining things, but idolmaster is my biggest special interest, and I am always really happy to try to get people into it.
Before we start, I want to remind you that Idolmaster has no localization. All translations are fanmade. Please remember to support translators. I'll leave as many resources as possible. If you have any translators or sites you'd like me to mention, please let me know.
If you're willing to try and get into it, please open the readmore. I wont only be including Cinderella Girls, I'll try to include every branch.
How do I get into THE IDOLMASTER Cinderella Girls?
Alright, I know I said I wouldn't only be including CG, but this is still a deresute gif blog. I know what most of you are here for.
Cinderella Girls is a huge branch. There's 190 idols. I see some people backing out when they realize this, but I don't think that should discourage you! With that many idols, you're guaranteed to find someone for you. And please, just because you think the voiced girls are more worth your time, please check out the unvoiced ones as well.
Alright, but how do you get into it?
There's a lot of Youtube channels that translate different commus from it. From card lines, to memorial commus, to entire events. Simply search "deresute translation" if you'd like. HNKM_days on Twitter also translates most of the events as they come out.
CG's music is great! there's tons of uploads on soundcloud. My soundcloud playlist has about 200-ish songs. You can find a bunch by just searching "idolmaster".
To find more information on a song, search it up on project-imas.
Project-imas is *the* best idolmaster resource I can think of. It's entirely in English, it has every single song, CD, card — anything you can think of. I use it everyday of my life, which might sound sad but I assure you it isn't. Probably.
How do I get into THE IDOLMASTER Million Live?
Sankyuu ML subs on YouTube does a great job at translating mirishita related content! Another personal note I wanna add is that million live has an amazing discography, and full versions of pretty much every song are on Spotify. Even tho the cast is way smaller than Cinderella Girls, there's still a lot to love about the branch. I dont play Mirishita as much as I do some of the other games, but I still consume lots of content from it and it's a lovely branch I definitely recommend you get into. As of writing this post, Mirishita is celebrating it's 6th anniversary! It's a good time to download the game. Remember, you will need a Japanese VPN or Japanese Apple ID to play it. This goes for every imas mobile game.
How do I get into THE IDOLMASTER SideM?
Well, this is where we're gonna have to start getting into the thorny dark side of being an idolmaster fan. SideM is a great branch which I absolutely adore, and all of it's producers are so passionate about it, however.. Bandai Namco has never been kind to it.
This year, it was announced that it's only current running game, THE IDOLM@STER SideM Growing Stars, will be ending it's service. This was extremely sudden, and hard for everyone to handle. This means that there will basically be no way to properly produce the idols. SideM won't fully die, with there being lives and such, but producing the idols is such a big part of this franchise. I don't want to make this post gloomy out of nowhere, I swear. It's just a bit touchy for now.
There's a huuuge translation masterdoc for SideM, if any of the units or characters catch your eye from the project-imas wiki page on SideM, I suggest you search for whatever idols intrigue you most in the doc. As well as the doc, you can search up "#sidemTL" on Twitter for more translations not on the doc. There's so much to love about every unit and idol, I swear it's worth your time! Even tho it's current state might steer you away, I think it's important to still appreciate the branch for what it is. Oh hey, SideM's discography is also on streaming services! Please stream Piece Montee and Secret Ornament.
How do I get into THE IDOLMASTER Shiny Colors?
Here's ones that's been gaining traction! Luckily, it's actually a pretty accessible branch to get into, if you're willing to download the English patch. The gameplay might seem complicated and scary at first, but even that has tons of guides. I think a lot of this post is motivated by my emotions on the franchise, and I'm sorry about that, but I really mean it when I say the writing is incredible.
You can play Shinymas on your web browser here. If you search up "Shiny colors English patch" on google, you can download it using the instructions. If you're still hesitant on playing for whatever reason, you can read episodes recorded in the English patch on YouTube. I'm not exaggerating when I say the writing is amazing.
p.s if you dont care about that then I should let you know there's unlimited free ten pulls when you start the game
How do I get into the original idolmaster games? (765AS + Dearly Stars)
If you specifically want to get into the console games, there's English roms and translations of routes on Youtube, as well. Dearly Stars is currently in a very weird state, tho. You see, the 765AS girls are all in Million Live, and there's a lot of consolemas games they appear in. But for Dearly Stars, there's only one game. Which is, well, Dearly Stars. And 2/3 of the Dearly Stars just.. havent gotten content since?
I think that it's still a game you should check out, tho! There's not a single bad song in it, and even tho 3 idols might seem like an underwhelming number, they're all brilliant and very lovable. As with a good chunk of consolemas games, there's Dearly Stars translations up on YouTube! A really dedicated RyoP posted them all and I am eternally grateful to them for it.
Alright, phew. I wrote half of this at 11 am and procrastinated for a few hours then wrote more at midnight. Remember that project-imas is an insanely good resource and I encourage you to tell me if I should add more things onto this post. 100% of this post was made off the top of my head and based off of my own experience with the games. I want to mention that there's also a channel called "アイマスSUBS" that covers all the branches in terms of translations, and they've got a bunch of those. Have fun, producers!

Do you have any pink genre recs in terms of music? I want to get more into the genre.
-Hypermobile Françoise anon
hello!!! do you have any idea how hard this is for me to answer. i love rambling and being pedantic and going off on tangents. almost as much as i love punk music...
tl;dr i compiled a playlist for you, containing 3 songs from (most of) the bands mentioned below, plus a few extra from miscellanious artists bc 54 is my lucky number. it was hard to choose just 3 from some of my faves but i feel like this is a good introduction. long post to follow <3
instead of simply giving you a list and sending you on your merry way, i am absolutely going to spout off bc thats what i do and ur gonna regret asking. do you think you were gonna get off that easy? you absolute fool. sit ur ass down ur about to get schooled.
disclaimer; this isn't exhaustive. i'm not rattling off every single punk artist that's ever existed. just a few of my favorites.
the clash, the quintessential punk band in my opinion. defined the genre and embodied the political ethos. explored different subgenres througout their expansive discography. they were probably my first introduction to music as a whole since they're my dad's favorite band. i may be biased but i'd definitely say start with the clash. i'd recommend listening to their third album, london calling, first.
the pogues - the folk punk band of all time. NOT folk-punk like some smelly white man with dreadlocks screaming over poorly-tuned guitar. you'll know exactly what i mean when you hear it. they have a unique sound that just can't be replicated. and shane macgowan is actually such a beautiful person. their lyrics are also politically tinged, kinda gritty and edgy (i.e. gratuitous slurs) so not for senstive ears.
(i actually have a playlist of my fave pogues/shane macgowan songs)
the cure, in my opinion, invented goth or at least popularized it. their earlier stuff had more of a punk sound but every one of their albums is a perfect 10 to me. they're one of my favorite bands of all time and i could go on about them for hours so i'll leave it there. joy division, also more goth/post-punk but i love them, i have one of their album covers tattooed on my forearm lmao 19 year old decisions. no regrets (i also love the smiths, but they're not really punk punk.)
before you ask, no sex pistols!!! don't get me started on how much i hate the sex pistols i will throw up! god they suck. to me at least.
a lot of punks also listen to ska - no, not that kind of ska. 70/80s ska that originated from rocksteady/reggae. some of my faves in that arena being madness, the specials, bad manners, and the beat.
and as for across the pond - american punk artists.
johnny cash. no, seriously. man was punk before punk was defined.
my favorite band is probably social distortion. they're pretty different than those mentioned above, owing to their unmistakable americana sound and aesthetic. to me they're the quintessential rockabilly revival band, heavily influenced by country and blues. great guitar licks. think wistful and reckless all at once.
their frontman mike ness is an outrageously gorgeous man. he has two solo albums that absolutely slap. the happiest day of my life was seeing them live a couple years ago and he winked right at me - i promise i'm not delusional i swear he really did. ok i digress.
dead kennedys - hilarious lyrics and sick ass bass lines, very political and generally pretty iconic. one of my dad's faves. the cramps and the misfits. two bands overlapping goth + punk + psychobilly. pioneers of a campy subgenre known as horror-punk. i also really like danzig, the misfits frontman's solo career.
the velvet underground/lou reed - great example of american proto-punk. very NYC vibes. the pixies are a more grungy, later punk band. one of my mommy's favorites <3 i would unironically name my child velouria. definitely iconic but i find them overplayed sometimes, as in you've probably heard them at the grocery store.
this barely scratches the surface btw but i think that about covers it for today. sorry if i bored you to death pls come back and keep me company. peace and love on planet mpregfrance <3

4th gen bg haven't gained popularity outside of their own fanbases which is also why it's rare to see like any of them on variety shows but I've been getting the feeling that ggs are still doing pretty well? Like gg always have been more popular but IVE's been doing like insanely well and even itzy and aespa have done leagues better than the 4th gen bgs from the big three. Anyways I'm sure someone already asked but what 4th gen groups do you think people should keep an eye on on or check out?
that's because girl groups have double the intended audience than boy groups lmao. girl groups are marketed to male AND female audiences, but boy groups are only marketed to female audiences, for many obvious heteronormative reasons.
alrighty (cracks knuckles) you want recs? lemme give you some recs:
purple kiss: debuted 2021. had the most perfect first comeback and have a no skip discography. great performers and have really good intro choreographies. bside recs: pretty psycho, cast pearls before swine
billlie: debuted 2021. they got a big boost in popularity thanks to gingamingayo but i'm gonna rec them anyways bc they deserve it. their debut track inexplicably samples christmas music. they did an excellent kick it cover. bside recs: flipp!ng a coin, overlap
pixy: debuted 2021. flop bc their company is tiny but they do a mean horror concept and have some of the best bsides in the game. they're having a comeback right now pls support. bside recs: greedy, the moon, moonlight.
xg: debuted 2022. they're a korean japanese collab group so they don't promote the same way as other groups do. absolute banger of a first single produced by simon from dalmation, and they're going to be releasing another at the end of the month
cignature: debuted 2020. also flops but they make bangers. boyfriend is what caught my attention but i'm a big fan of assa as well. bside recs: villain, hinghing
tan: debuted 2022. formed from a literal survival show and has the MOST second gen energy you will see outside of someone from second gen. which is fitting because one of the members is actually second gen. incredible rnb debut track and the english version is even better. and here's an acapella version for good measure. surely this traffic light cover will cure my mental illness. they're about to have a comeback that's gonna blow my brains out. bside recs: literally just listen to their whole ep it's three and a half songs.
tempest: debuted 2022. the new boy group from yuehua (woodz's agency). super fun debut track and they're very promising performers. i would commit a crime for hanbin (pink hair). bside recs: bad at love, just a little bit
blitzers: debuted 2021. major first year theatre kid energy and i find it so endearing. the debut choreo involved spinning their maknae 360 degrees for no reason. their first comeback was my favourite choreo of 2021. bside recs: hop in, love bottle.
nine.i: debuted 2022. the most insane (figurative) debut choreo i have ever seen. here's me losing my shit about it in the tags, and here's a reaction video they did where they explain all of the move choices. so basically content made for me and me only. also one of their members produced their entire ep. bside recs: beauty inside, wasted youth
tnx: debuted 2022. these boys are FRESH (like debuted a month ago fresh) but i've been keeping an eye on them thanks to this frankly better than it should have been win cover. all those boys made it into the group btw. bside recs: 180sec, burst up.
omega x: debuted 2021. formed entirely from members of disbanded 3rd gen flop groups as a 'second chance' type group. if you want crunch, here's some crunchy. if you want bright, here's some bright. bside recs: younger, action, bounce with me
dkz (formerly dongkiz): debuted 2019. these boys are mega flops that have already gone through a name change AND a lineup change. absolutely banging music and they do mostly bright and fun concepts. see: cupid, crazy night, lupin, blockbuster, fever
a.c.e: debuted 2017. they debuted in hot pants with only a fetish gear company sponsorship and a dream. they. are. singers. who. SING. they're officially on hiatus rn bc 4/5 of them are in the military but you should still support them. see also: take me higher, down, changer, goblin, undercover
onf: debuted 2017. they're also on hiatus because they all enlisted at the same time (minus their japanese member u) but you should still support them because they produce summer bangers. see: sukhumvit swimming, complete, popping, beautiful beautiful, we must love, goosebumps. also one of the greatest bsides of all time
onlyoneof: debuted 2019. blew up a little bit last year for doing a homoerotic pseudo kink choreo with a dick grab. if you like stuff adjacent to western indie/alt music these are the boys for you. see: savannah, dora maar, sage, angel, designer, gaslighting
golden child: debuted 2017. picking up the story mv slack. one of their members can play paganini and if you don't know what that means, it's not an insignificant skill. see: pump it up, wannabe, burn it (also a story mv)
oneus: debuted 2019. it's likely that most people know about oneus already but in case you didnt, you're welcome. extremely strong dance group and with impeccable concepts. also they have the actual best fourth gen dancer yeo hwanwoong. see: luna, bring it on, no diggity, valkyrie. their sibling group is the kband onewe and you should check them out too.
ok that's enough for now, i think.

6, 22, 23, 30!!
Thanks for the ask Missy!
Music ask game:
6: A song you've had on repeat lately
Right now I think it's gotta be the Glee cover of Silly Love Songs, but Memories by P!atD is close behind! (Not even a full month into January and I'm already skewing my Spotify wrapped irreparably 🤣)
22: a song you can't stand by an artist you like
....god. do I even have one?? Nothing's coming to mind or sticking out when I think of my faves, like. I haven't listened to all of Taylor's discography yet but I've liked basically everything I've heard and don't actively hate any of it (...or at least not her parts of it); I can think of maybe one tentative example for Rybak but objectively I haven't actually listened to the song cause I couldn't get past the thumbnail for it (it's a YouTube video exclusive cause it's actually a parody song); KEiiNO is chill, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, Journey, they're all pretty much bangers only....
I think my answer's gonna have to be two songs that mostly fit the bill, in that I didn't necessarily enjoy listening to them and haven't really listened after like the first time I heard them, and that's either I Don't Wanna Live Forever by ZAYN and Taylor Swift (not because of Taylor's parts tho she sounds great, I just can't stand the falsetto Zayn is in for most of it, especially during the chorus--he sounds so sharp or like. Brittle? and it just becomes a Bad Sound Texture™ for me) or Viva Las Vengeance by Brendon Urie (yes its technically the lead single for the last album he released as P!atD, but considering the shit show that went down with it and the fact that I'm petty and didn't like the song when I listened to it, like, at all, enough that I straight up haven't listened to the rest of the album when I've listened to and own every other Panic! album... Yeah I'm divorcing this one from Panic!, sorry Urie this one's on you.)
23: a song you remember liking as a kid
Hmm... I could use House at Pooh Corner again (a staple of mine for musical ask games), buuuttttt.... Nah, actually I'm bringing in a REAL throwback: She Loves You, but specifically the remastered Alvin and the Chipmunks version from the 2007 Greatest Hits album (Still Squeaky After All These Years). I wore that CD out as a kid when I had a CD player, and when the players kept breaking and my parents gave me a hand-me-down MP3 player this was one of the first albums my dad added for me. Honestly most of these songs could be used (I was particularly fond of If You Love Me (Alouette) as well) but She Loves You seemed like the most solid option.
30: a song that makes you nostalgic
Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson (to date I consider this my Childhood Favorite Song, not to be confused with my Teenage Favorite Song or Early 20's Favorite Song, because no I can't choose just one favorite song, are you kidding??)

Omg I am so excited to see back to you live but I *love* miss you and feel like its really made to be sung with thousands of people. And you're right about holding onto Heartache! I probably don't need to worry 😆.
I also love that's the way love goes but I know he probably won't play that live but fingers crossed for headline!!!!
I agree about WDBHG, I never really listened to much 1D and despite having watched videos/streams from tour I still can't remember any of the lyrics 😭 (I'm trying louis! I wanna be able to be excited! But I just don't enjoy it like all the others on the set!)
And yes omg guitar louis!!! For common people!!! Or a version of face the music like the demo!!!
Thank you so much for the lovely welcome!
You're very welcome 🥰❤️ i hope you have the best time in the fandom and at the show. Louis is just the best, as a person and as an artist. I could never be a stan of anyone else, he's just everything 😌. Coming back to the topic at hand, ngl i'm a back to you girlie (she was the reason i became a fan and i've seen her impact irl. Someone played the song at my uni and then suddenly everyone was playing it non stop for more than a year. Like the organic propagation of that song is just mindblowing . To think of what we could have if his music was given a tiny chance, just little efficient promo 😔) but omg you're so right miss you will be so good live. Imagine the fans yelling while he sings "WITH ALL OF MY PEOPLE and it couldn't get better they say". I really hope (and think) hoth is there to stay and i trust Louis not to do that to us like pls not hoth 😩 so don't worry about it. I love that's the way love goes too but now that Oli isn't single 🤭 (at least we got to hear it before tour 😭). Hope we get headline at least at that last show you're going to (pls Louis 🤲). And pls don't feel bad about not knowing the lyrics to that band's songs. I became a fan in 2019 when we only had the pre-walls singles and very few solo Louis content so i looked up the band's music and i still don't know the lyrics to their songs except for the iconic ones Louis wrote. From his current set, i only know the lyrics to his solo in night changes and the chorus (only bc it's such a popular song and that chorus is everywhere 😭). Idk any lyric in wdbhg and i won't bother. I won't subject myself to minutes of those men's voices just for a few seconds of Louis' angelic one. We don't have to do that anymore, we have his (much superior) solo discography for that 😁. Guitar Louis will k!ll us all when it happens like i'm not even kidding idk if i'll survive it 😭.
I know your show will be extra special and very emotional since it's the last Europe leg and it's in England so i hope it'll be full of nice surprises and that you'll have the time of your life 💙 🫂

Some music asks!
1. Are you an albums person or a singles person?
8. Is there an artist or song that you like, despite being of a genre you don't usually like?
62. Artists/bands you think have an impeccable discography, with no bad albums
Thanks for asking! Needed the distraction.
1. Are you an albums person or a singles person?
I am more into albums, but occasionally Spotify does recommend good singles. :)
8. Is there an artist or song that you like, despite being of a genre you don't usually like?
I generally like a little bit of every genre, so this is a little tricky... I guess I could say Daughter, they're indie-folk / indie-pop which is not normally my thing.
62. Artists/bands you think have an impeccable discography, with no bad albums
Pvris or Evanescence!

there were some really exciting new singles that came out this month, but also a few that left a bad taste in my mouth! 2024 is still shaping up to be an amazing year for music tho. some great projects coming over the next few months and i can't wait to dive into them. anyway, here are my thoughts on some of the notable singles & songs from this month!! to check out my thoughts on some of the albums, EPs, and mixtapes that came out this month click here!!! also feel free to follow me on rate your music and twitter <3
Tumblr media
"Prologue" - Kamasi Washington
◇ featured on Fearless Movement - Kamasi Washington (not yet released) ◇ genres: spiritual jazz, jazz fusion
Saxophonist Kamasi Washington, undoubtedly one of the most prominent figures in modern jazz, has a new album coming out in a few months. This isn't technically the lead single as "The Garden Path" is on the record and that track was released years ago, but "Prologue" is the single released alongside the announcement of the new record. This is an immersive and frenetic jazz fusion cut that just goes crazy. Washington's saxophone is obviously a highlight, but THOSE DRUMS! Really great stuff all around. Super excited for the new album after hearing this, even more so after looking at some of the guests on the record. George Clinton, André 3000, and Thundercat? I'm all in.

Tumblr media
"Wild God" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
◇ featured on Wild God - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (not yet released) ◇ genres: art rock, chamber pop
A few weeks after I finished The Bad Seeds discography, they went and released the lead single to their first album of the 2020s. Their last three records have been some of their strongest. From Push the Sky Away to Ghosteen, they've just been on a great run. From the sounds of "Wild God," Wild God could probably continue that hot streak. It leans into the chamber music-y aspects of their last few albums, but a lot more rock oriented rather than the heavy electronic elements of Ghosteen. It has Nick Cave's trademarks, but it's always a treat to hear them. I was sort of on the fence about this track until the "Bring your spirit down" part towards the middle. Kicked right into the next gear that I needed it to go. Can't wait for this one.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"One Night Stand" - Adeem the Artist
◇ featured on Anniversary - Adeem the Artist (not yet released) ◇ genres: americana, progressive country
I've been on the Adeem the Artist train ever since I heard Cast-Iron Pansexual back in 2021. Ever since then, I've always kept them on my radar so I can hear whatever they do next. This new single, and the lead to their upcoming album Anniversary, is just great. I love how they never shy away from embracing the country music sound. This sounds like a country music radio hit from years gone by, but with a queer spin to it. Finally a bittersweet country anthem that I don't feel ashamed to sing along to! Really loving this track and I hope the album is just as good!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"symptom of life" - WILLOW
◇ genres: indie rock, art rock
WILLOW has made so many really good songs. "symptom of life" is definitely one of them, but I've been burned so many times. She'll make a banger song and then the next thing she releases is a collab with like Yungblud or MGK. Then the full album those good singles lead up to is pretty disappointing. Maybe "symptom of life" will break that cycle! I'm all in on her art rock era and she really fits this sound well. The skittering piano throughout the verses juxtaposes her vocals in a really cool way. The chorus is good, but I wish it hit a bit harder than it does. All in all, this is really good and I hope her next project can tap into her full potential.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Alley Rose" - Conan Gray
◇ featured on Found Heaven - Conan Gray (not yet released) ◇ genres: post-britpop, piano rock
I haven't been crazy about Conan Gray's music over the years and while "Alley Rose" isn't terrible by any means, I just find it ... off-putting, for lack of a better word. Everything is just so overproduced and hardly any genuine emotion can emerge through that barrier. It also makes it difficult for me as a listener to connect with the song. Like I can hear Gray singing his damn heart out, but it just feels so plastic to me. It sort of sounds like an Elton John song, but not classic Elton, like ... recent Elton. That kind of grand music that just fails to portray anything earnest.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"This Is Nowhere" - The Black Keys
◇ featured on Ohio Players - The Black Keys (not yet released) ◇ genres: pop rock
I was a pretty big fan of The Black Keys when I was in middle school and I have a lot of nostalgia for their early 2010s stuff, but they've been coasting for so long now. That sort of boring, too clean blues/garage rock that just gets so exhausting after a while. "This is Nowhere" has them shaking up the formula a bit, but it's very much an "in one ear and out the other" type song. It'll probably get some airplay on your local alternative station and then it'll be phased out in favor of their hits from a decade ago. I do like the subtle psychedelic flavor to this song though, I just wish it was more memorable on the whole.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Incognito" | "Saturnine" - Justice
◇ featured on Hyperdrama - Justice (not yet released) ◇ genres: french electro, synth funk
Justice have released two more singles in anticipation for their new record. They're both pretty good. "Incognito" is a pretty solid electro track and "Saturnine" adds some funk to the mix which shakes things up a bit in a cool way even if it can veer into computer commercial territory. For some reason though, I find myself not returning to these new singles of theirs all that often. Like they're good in the moment, but nothing really compels me to revisit them. These two singles are a bit weaker than the previous two overall as well. I'm still gonna give the record a shot though, I have a feeling it'll be a pretty fun listen. Hopefully these tracks stick with me more when that time comes.

"sir princess bad bitch" - Yaya Bey
◇ featured on Ten Fold - Yaya Bey (not yet released) ◇ genres: dance-pop, alternative r&b
I don't really know much about Yaya Bey. I was just looking through some new releases and this single looked intriguing. "sir princess bad bitch" is a nice lowkey R&B cut delivered with a ton of confidence. She sounds so cool here. I do wish the song was a bit longer and shook things up a bit more, but I still had a good time with it. I'll keep her upcoming album on my radar for sure!

"Looping" - RiTchie
🥇 BEST SONG OF THE MONTH
◇ featured on Triple Digits (112) - RiTchie (not yet released) ◇ genres: experimental hip hop, neo-soul, nu jazz
RiTchie is three-for-three with these new singles. The former Injury Reserve MC is gearing up for his debut solo record and it's shaping up to be an exciting one. "Looping" is quite different from the previous two singles. The playfulness is traded out in favor of something more meditative both lyrically and production wise. This atmospheric jazzy beat pairs with his passionate delivery wonderfully. I'm even more excited for the new album now. Excited to hear just how dynamic he can get. Could be one of the best records of the year for sure.

"Classical" | "Mary Boone" - Vampire Weekend
◇ featured on Only God Was Above Us - Vampire Weekend (not yet released) ◇ genres: indie rock, chamber pop, baroque pop
Vampire Weekend have released two new singles leading up to their new album coming next week and they have all been pretty great. "Classical" has this off-putting lushness to it. It sounds like a deconstructed version of something from their earlier albums. "Mary Boone" is a fuzzy, sparse ballad that eventually blooms into an almost baggy direction. Sort of reminded me a bit of something from George Clanton's last album, except a bit less immersive. I'm really loving these new singles and I'm super excited to hear the new record.

"Cinderella" - Remi Wolf
◇ featured on Big Ideas - Remi Wolf (not yet released) ◇ genres: synth-funk, contemporary r&b
Remi Wolf has sort of passed me by over the last few years. I've been meaning to listen to her last record for a while now, but I just haven't gotten around to it. After hearing this new single, "Cinderella," I definitely need to go back and check it out before this new record drops. This is such a jam. If this is what she's been cooking up all this time, I've really missed out.

"Like That" - Future, Metro Boomin & Kendrick Lamar
◇ featured on WE DON'T TRUST YOU - Future & Metro Boomin ◇ genres: indie rock, chamber pop
I decided not to write a full review of this new Future and Metro Boomin' record because I don't have too much to say about it. It's got some good stuff, but it's a little bloated. This song definitely stood out though. The beat is pretty basic, but effective. Future holds his own in his verses, but the real highlight is Kendrick Lamar's guest verse. He's just so good, everyone knows that by this point, but it's still so true.

"The von dutch remix with addison rae and a.g. cook" - Charli XCX
◇ genres: electropop, bubblegum bass
A few weeks after Charli XCX released her middling house cut "Von dutch," the remix featuring Addison Rae and A.G. Cook is here. Call me crazy, but I think this might be the superior version. A.G. Cook's production here really kicks it into that wild next gear that I wished the original did. Charli's performance stands out a lot more here too, as does Rae's. This still isn't one of my favorite Charli tracks, but this is a definite improvement.

"How We See the Light" - John Cale
◇ featured on POPtical Illusion - John Cale (not yet released) ◇ genre: art pop
I'm still kinda new to the world of John Cale's solo music. I only just listened to Paris 1919 and Fear for the first time, but I loved them both. He has a new record out this June and this lead single is pretty decent. Cale still has an ear for interesting melodies and sounds. The more I revisit this one the more I enjoy it. It's nice to hear an artist of like Cale still experimenting and playing around. Definitely gonna check out this record when it drops.

"World on a String" - Jessica Pratt
◇ featured on Here in the Pitch - Jessica Pratt (not yet released) ◇ genres: singer-songwriter, folk pop
Another really good single from Jessica Pratt leading up to her next album. This one sounds a bit more like what you would expect from her, but the formula is far from broken. Few are making folk music as dreamy as Pratt. Many of Pratt's songs sound like what ripples in a small pond look like, "World on a String" is one of them. Looking forward to Here in the Pitch for sure. It could very well be one of her strongest albums to date!

"The Seasons Reverse (Live)" - Gastr Del Sol
◇ featured on We Have Dozens of Titles - Gastr Del Sol (not yet released) ◇ genres: post-rock, ambient pop
Jim O'Rourke and David Grubbs long dormant post rock group Gastr Del Sol are returning with a new compilation of unearthed material soon. Admittedly, I haven't listened to much of their work, but I'm a huge fan of Jim's so I decided to check this out. This is a nice instrumental piece with an interesting arrangement. O'Rourke's guitar is accompanied by these sometimes harsh, sometimes gentle synths. Hard to recommend this for everyone, but if you're a fan, this is probably really cool.

Tumblr media
"I LUV IT" - Camila Cabello
◇ genres: jersey drill, baltimore club, electropop
This is a mess. It’s a mish-mash of sounds that Camila Cabello just doesn’t have the sauce to pull off well at all. Also the lyrics are trying way too hard to be tongue-in-cheek and it falls so flat. When that snippet of the track was getting some attention on Twitter, I assumed it had to be a bit. No, that annoying “i love it, i love it, i love it, i love it” is the chorus. Carti’s guest verse isn’t good either. Just an impressively bad song! Like all of the pieces of the puzzle are there, but they're jammed together in such a way that the entire thing is a jumbled-up mess.

"Take Me to the River" - Lorde
◇ featured on Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense (not yet released) ◇ genres: new wave, pop rock
The singles leading up to the A24 Talking Heads tribute album have been underwhelming for the most part, but I was really looking forward to this one. Lorde’s take on the Talking Heads cover of the Al Green song “Take Me to the River” is alright. This kind of production is new territory for her, but she holds her own pretty well. There’s nothing remarkable about the track and it pales in comparison to both the original and the cover it’s covering, but not bad at all.

"Next Semester" - twenty one pilots
◇ featured on Clancy - twenty one pilots (not yet released) ◇ genres: post-punk revival, indie rock, pop rock
I wasn't crazy about the last single twenty one pilots dropped, but this is definitely a step-up. Does that make this song amazing? Not really. I feel like I'm grading on a curve. This is one of the best twenty one pilots songs for sure! I don't know if it stands out beyond that distinction though. Some of the verses are a bit awkward and not in the good, nervous energy kind of way. However, the instrumentation has some good moments, namely Josh Dun's drumming. This song is alright. I see a lot of people hyping up this new record and I'm hoping I can hop on that bandwagon, but I'm just not fully clicking with these songs.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Flea" - St. Vincent
◇ featured on All Born Screaming - St. Vincent (not yet released) ◇ genres: alternative rock
Another really good single from St. Vincent! A lot less industrial than the last cut, but it's still dark and noisy. There's some really cool production moments here. I love the multi-layered vocals on the "Once I'm in, you can't get rid of me" part. The chorus is explosive too. The rhythm section, consisting of Dave Grohl on drums and Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bass, are also killing it. Giving this song this sort of prickly groove. Definitely looking forward to hearing whatever she has in store next, these singles rock.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ thanks for reading :3

Swallow the Sun primer
For @devoured-by-shadows but anyone who's interested in discovering the Finnish doom masters that are STS are welcome to read! The post's addressed to them because it began as an ask and I went overboard Like I do hahaha
Swallow the Sun, shortened to STS, are a LEGENDARY doom metal band from Finland. They formed in 2000, created by master of Gloom, Beauty & Despair Mister Juha Raivio himself, composer and guitarist who will rip your heart right out of your chest and leave you in a puddle of tears with the beauty of the crushing tales he weaves. Within a year they had Matti Honkonen on bass and the absolutely extraordinary Mikko Kotamäki on vocals to form the core lineup which has remained stable since 2001. Drums and second guitar have changed a bit over the years (notably they had Kai Hato behind the kit from 2009 to 2015, #bestEraOfSTS. You may know Hato better from Wintersun, or Nightwish nowadays. He's one of my all time drum idols and, no joke, one of the softest, kindest, most gentle souls I've ever met in my life). STS's got the same lineup since 2018.
I will admit that Kotamäki's vocals are somewhat of an acquired taste, it did take me a while to get used to it too, but give it the time it deserves. He has cleans and screams to offer and once it hits, it's transcendental. Once you'll fall in love, this man will ensnare you and his voice will own your soul. He's definitely refined his vocal technique too, the song you heard No Light, No Hope is from 2007, he was still pretty raw then. I like the rawness but it is less accessible than how polished he sounds now. I don't see any reason why his recent vocals would not hit the mark for you, knowing what I know of your stellar music taste.
Through their career they have released 8 full length studio albums with the occasional EP and single release dotted throughout. Legit, they do not have a single bad album. They have rather different albums, and you will vibe with an era more than with another, most likely. It's up to you to find where STS clicks for you, which type of haunting menalcholy do their grip and won't let go of. As long as you are into doom metal and slow, melancholic, longing, painful, mournful 5-15 minutes songs, they will hit for you. Their lyrical universe is stunning, and once you're sucked into their sound, there's a non-negligible chance they will become a go-to band to cry to when you need to get it out. I know that's what they are for me. You just need to be in a mood for sad shit.
Keeping in my mind that my actual recommendation is "just listen to the entire discography from start to finish because it's 100% worth it and flawless perfection", I also recognize my bias and how unrealistic that is XD So I shall now proceed to go album by album in chronological order (which is also the order I recommend discovering them in because their progress is very satisfying to hear) and rec some songs to start your Swallow the Sun journey with!
Tumblr media
Off of 2003's The Morning Never Came, I suggest: Deadly Nightshade Swallow (Horror Pt. 1) my favorite STS song because of personal reasons and attachment
Tumblr media
From 2005's Ghosts of Loss, I suggest: The Giant Fragile
Tumblr media
From 2007's Hope I suggest: Don't Fall Asleep (Horror Pt. II)
Tumblr media
2008's Plague of Butterflies EP is one of the most ambitious, gut wrenching and honestly seminal projects in doom metal's history. It's a 35 minutes song that is a must listen in any metalhead's journey. Sit down, grab the lyrics, dim the lights and feel the beauty and sadness of one of the most wonderful and painful musical tales to ever come out of the genre. Unbeatable shit. My 2nd favorite STS song.
Tumblr media
Off of 2009's New Moon, I suggest: Lights on the Lake (Horror Pt. III)
Tumblr media
Off of 2012's Emerald Forest and the Blackbird, which is where I feel you'll start to hear the shift into STS's "modern sound" so this may be where you start to like them more, I suggest: Labyrinth of London (Horrors pt. IV) my 4th favorite STS song, the 3rd will come later This Cut is the Deepest Hate, Lead the Way
Tumblr media
2015's Songs from the North is quite the outlier project in this band's discography because it's a triple album. It's legit 3-4 hours of music. Each album, I, II and III have a distinct sound and pull from different inspirations: you have a heavier metal one, an acoustic one and a deep slow doom 10+ minutes-per-song one. It's a big ass mountain to climb cause there is so much material here and it's not been trimmed. I sincerely feel like they could have made a single 12-13 tracks album with the three discs, idk. I don't suggest starting here at all, this is more of the deep dive album at the end of the journey if you really love them: Lost & Catatonic
Tumblr media
Which leads us to the masterpiece of Swallow the Sun's discography, 2019's When a Shadow is Forced into the Light. Listen. There is a lot of history behind that album. A very painful personal history in Juha Raivio's life. I could recount the whole tale one day, because as STS fans we lived through it in a small way. With all the distance in the world, it wrecked me. 4 years later it still makes me very, very emotional. Long story short, Raivio's wife Aleah Starbridge, the Nightingale, beautiful soul, beautiful flamme, for whom we still hold the torch alight, passed away and this is the album of his grief. I think even without knowing the whole story, the album speaks for itself. This is one of my top 5 albums of all time. All genres, all bands, all music altogether, this album is one of the most beautiful, most difficult listens I have ever heard and it changed me deeply. This album completely changed me. There's a before and an after. Me and my father made our first listen of this album together on the road when it came out. Mw dad's a man from the 50s so you know he Does Not Cry, I have seen this man cry probably 5 times in my entire life, and one of those was us listening to this album for the first time. We had to pull over to the side of the road so we wouldn't get in an accident and we just stayed there, listened, held each other and sobbed together. I will never forget that memory. So as far as songs go? Just listen to the entire album. For real. Take the hour out of your life. It's worth it, trust me. When you're in the mood to take it obviously. Every song here is pure musical perfection. Stone Wings is my 3rd favorite STS song, but it deserves to hit in the context of the album. Do me and yourself a favor and experience the entire thing as it was meant to. Start of the playlist here
Tumblr media
2021's Moonflowers is their latest release currently and I suggest: Woven into Sorrow
And those are the broad lines of Swallow the Sun! I hope you enjoy your journey in this universe of Gloom, Beauty & Despair! If you have any comments / questions about them (yes I have hagning out with the guys annecdotes too XD for instance hahaha) hit me up anytime!

hello!!!! i wanna start listening to bad omens - dyou have any song recs? ty 🫶🏼
SO MANY i will put them under a cut cuz this will be a long post
So the two classics I knew them for before I Got Into them are The Worst In Me
youtube
and Careful What You Wish For. They're pretty standard good metalcore, you might even recognise them.
youtube
Very good but they do Not prepare you for their recent album, TDOPOM. The confusion when I first heard Concrete Jungle
youtube
It fucks, I just wasn't expecting it from what I'd heard of Bad Omens. Idk what your taste is, but they have a lot of range. If you want heavy, you can't go wrong with Dethrone and Artificial Suicide
youtube
youtube
But dude their softer shit? Mercy unplugged gives me game of thrones vibes
youtube
(All of the Finding God Before God Finds Me Unplugged EP is so good tho, how come metal bands consistently make the BEST acoustic shit?) Also Who Are You?
Gotta love Just Pretend, Noah's vocal performance fucks me up every time. I hear it's popular on tiktok? Idk I don't use tiktok cuz I love myself
youtube
Can't forget my baby girls, Running In Circles and Said & Done
Oh and there's that Kayzo collab
FGBGFM is my favourite Bad Omens album tbh but TDOPOM is a very close second. There are songs that I want to put here but I'm trying very hard not to just recommend their whole discography, I think all of it is worth a solid listen. Wait let me put Like A Villain too, it's got them ~pretty~ Noah vocals and also. fucken guitars.
youtube
Ik there are a lot of singles on this list but I mean they're singles for a reason. Ig I could do a list of my favourite non-singles too if you want something like that, but I think these are a good starting point. Here's my Best of Bad Omens spotify playlist, if you want that. Oh wait let me suggest Kingdom Of Cards too

so, im a very very new cravity stan. and i've been wanting to talk about serim in bAD HABITS IM GONNA SCREAMMM WHY DID THEY GIVE THAT MAN SO MUCH SCREEN TIME I HAD TO HOLD MYSELF BACK FROM THROWING THINGS AT MY SCREEN
the intro, the rap after the intro, his lines during the 'oh yeah yeah' part and him at that damn ending istg he should NEVER whisper in any other track or i will actually go insane
for now i think my bias is serim 😭😭 taeyoung and jungmo are my bias wreckers AND my fav song is bad habits (and groovy) its so damn underrated istg
also i need bside recs from their discography 😭 i wanna listen to all of their discography but uni is a bitch so :)
WELCOME TO THE LUVITY FANDOM!!! :D enjoy your stay cause there is no way out!
THIS IS SO REAL LMAOO serim in bad habits was a little warning for serim in megaphone like they wanted all of us dead. exterminated.
i realised that i don't listen to bad habits a lot (still know all the lyrics by heart lol), or at least i forget about it a little and then i remember it, listen to it once and keep it on loop for WEEKS!! serim's parts are the best ones they make me ascend every single time...
if you don't have the time to listen to everything (totally understandable) i'll just give you different options with different vibes :D :
if you liked bad habits i would suggest you: mammoth, get lifted, pow and boppin!!
for calmer songs i'd recommend: call my name (my all time favorite!!), realise and gogo
for more upbeat and refreshing songs: fly, vivid and a to z (omg i love these songs)
and for more... ig mature?? r&b idk???: flip the frame, automatic and vibration!!!
i hope that could help!! tried not to write down their entire discography because i just love cravity so much lol (failed lowkey)
