LITTLE WOMEN
Tumblr media
Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women is an engaging interpretation of the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott.
This story is not just about Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March's childhood in poverty. This is a tale about women who battle the limitations imposed on all women. The lives, love, and losses of this charming cast of individuals will be completely witnessed in this film.
I was 15 when I first watched “little women”, when I first saw the title I thought the movie will talk about how do girls became a women. At that time as a teenager I was mesmerized about the thought of me growing up, becoming independent and living my life to the fullest. Indeed the movie talks about growth but there is more to it that I love.
The March family imparts numerous lessons about standing up for what you believe is right, and what it means to be a caring family. We can tell how much they like being together to the point where they don't want to grow up if it means being apart. We see them create a welcoming environment and also discover that the family is a space for recovery. I respect every character in this movie especially Amy March because I see myself in her. Still a young child. But, has an ambition of having a fairy-tale life and accomplishing her big goals in life. She is creative and idealistic which I really love. One of my favorite lines in this movie is when Amy tells Laurie how marriage became an economic proposition to most women.
"Well. I'm not a poet, I'm just a woman. and as a woman, I have no way to make money, not enough to earn a living and support my family. even if I had my own money, which I don't, it would belong to my husband the minute we were married. if we had children they would belong to him not me. they would be his property. so don't sit there and tell me that marriage isn't an economic proposition because it is. It may not be for you but it most certainly is for me."
-Amy March
In my opinion, everyone should watch Little Women at least once in their lifetime. It's a timeless piece for many reasons. I keep watching it over and over again, and each time, I learn something new. Although it takes place in the 1860s, it is still relevant for inspiring girls to be powerful women today.  And honestly speaking this is one of my all-time favorite movies. The timeline's artistic presentation and the conclusion captivate me. I think every woman can connect to this version of Jo, with her desire for independence and freedom as a woman, feeling different for not seeking 'love' and her simultaneous sense of loneliness. I admire how the director decided to leave the conclusion of the movie to the audience. Making us decide how we will perceive the story.
How will you perceive the story?

hiii omg so it's me again idk if this will go through but
it's been a long time bc tumblrs a cunt (sorry) and they haven't fixed your account but i will NOT let that stop me. so i love little women (i would make this ask about tbosas but i haven't watched it yet unfortunately) to the point i have that ending jo and laurie scene memorised
so my question is what are your thoughts about amy and laurie? i know some people love them together and it's totally okay if you like them together as well this is just my opinion and I'm sorry if it offends you but i liked jo and laurie better. im sorry but amys character always annoyed me so much the fact that she burnt something that belonged to jo out of petty entitlement and rage just makes me want to kill her (sorry im a bit too passionate) and idk im not a fan of amy
but i want to know YOUR opinion so if you do get this, what's your opinion on laurie and amy? which one do you think is better: jo and laurie or amy and laurie
baiiii <33
OH MY GOD LUCYY HII. (no don't be sorry, they ARE lmao).
i haven't watched tbosas too to be honest, so can't give you my opinion on that either! but greta's little women??? oh my god yes THAT i can do. (also the part about having the jo and laurie scene memorized is soo real. i have that, the attic scene, and the "marriage is an economic proposition" speech ingrained in my brain, this entire movie is just!!).
but anyways, loved reading your thoughts about this!! this film is always soo much fun to discuss, so here are my thoughts :D
okay so, jo and laurie. i definitely get why you and lots lots of other prefer jo and laurie because i think this entire thing they have together is soo reminiscent of things like, i don't know childhood innocence and naivety and everything that comes with it (at least that's how i see them?).
the fact that they became such such close friends since they met at 15 and then just had this adorable friendship is just <3 and not to mention all the small things (like the ring and dancing in the hallways for me) and how laurie was SO obviously head over heels for her since the beginning. there was so much sweet history between these two and soo much more build up that it's so SAD to see it all disappear and see them have this slight bittersweet relationship once they got older, once that child in each of them were forced to grow up and adjust to the rest of the world.
i love them so soo much too!!! their friendship is an entire world of itself, but i don't think i prefer them romantically. just because jo didn't feel the same about it all :/ and i really really like the implication that she never did end up marrying anyone (that fredrick was just an additional character so her book could get published), just like what the author had wanted for her.
(it's just that i think freedom and writing had always been the things she treasured, and i'm not saying she can't have both that and romance in her life, but i think she already felt that the love her family had given her was enough that romance was unnecessary. and her "but i'm so lonely" speech in the attic and how desperate she was for companionship followed by how happy she ended up being with her sisters and her parents and a lively school to take care of and on top of that, having her book published is just so <3 to me.)
as for amy and laurie, i personally don't mind them. i think they're cute, and i really like how we got to see how much they gradually grew as individuals through their interactions, from when they met again in europe to when laurie asked her not to marry fred. especially amy. i do think that their relationship got way too little screen time that the entire thing just felt a little.. half baked? (for lack of a better word lmaoo). and totally get why it feels like laurie just "settled down" with amy and second her to jo because of how fast things were suddenly changing.
actually, to be honest, i don't like laurie that much 😭 sincerest apologies if you do haha, but the more i think about it all, the more i feel this off-putting feeling about him IM SORRY 😭
amy though?? i totally get why she irked you and lots of other people (and yeah i agree especially for that burning jo's book thing because oh my god!! i was crying when i accidently deleted my bad wowp fanfic when i was thirteen and mourned the loss of it so bad, i can't imagine having your entire BOOK being burned esp by your sister. jo handled it better than i would honestly).
but i honestly LOVE to see how she had grown over the years. there's just something about seeing her turning from the jealous and angry child she was to someone who ended up taking it for the team and was on her way to marry a man she didn't love just for her family. and she absolutely killed it with those speeches. the entire "marriage is an economic proposition" scene is SO. and how she didn't take laurie as he was and let herself be his last resort? i think that's queen shit (to say the least).
I ENDED UP RANTING AGAIN IM SORRY 😭
and all this to say that maybe i'm not sure who i actually like better..... i LOVE jo and laurie's friendship, but maybe not as a romantic pairing. anddd i think amy and laurie is cute to me that's allllll
ANYWAYS THANK YOU FOR THIS LUCYYY. sorryy for the rant, I LOVE YOUUU AND I HOPE YOU'RE HAVING A WONDERFUL DAY 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

i don't know if you'll care much, but i thought i would give you my opinion of the 1994 little women because i saw your post the other day with christian bale as laurie and decided to watch it.
i found out about the movie existing during my movies-ruin-good-books phase, so i'd never seen it, only the new one.
i have to confess, i still like the new one better, but there are several good things about this one as well.
i loved laurie's brother energy with all of the march girls, even amy when she was little. it was a little weird seeing him with such a little girl, but i sort of saw the amys as different people in a way, which made it less weird. i like amy/laurie better in the newer movie, but this one did a good job, i thought.
one of the main things i liked about this movie was that laurie didn't seem, to me, to really be in love with jo. in the newer movie, laurie had so much emotion during his proposal scene that it made it harder to believe he'd never truly been in love with her. this movie made it clear that they're really siblings, which is what i thought the book gave us about them.
i think i could have liked jo and the professor much more if he didn't seem quite so much older than her. it was a little weird, too, just like earlier amy/laurie scenes, and i couldn't ever quite get past that.
i truly loved that they showed how jo and laurie were both so much happier with the people they ended up with. i didn't like the weird new feelings jo had in the newer movie, so i was glad they didn't really do that.
i haven't much to say about meg, only that i liked the way they did the scene where she goes to the party and gets all dressed up. i liked it far more in this film than the other.
my favorite thing about this movie, though, had to be beth. i thought she was so spot on to the book version of her, and she was quiet and a homebody and sweet, and she kept the family all together in the earlier years, and they did a good job of that.
this all being said, i do still like the other one better, though i suspect it's mostly because i love florence pugh and the amy/laurie in that movie. i'm a sucker for amy/laurie, i confess.
i'm so glad i watched it, though!! i'm glad you posted the christian bale laurie thing because that really is what made me decide to watch it.
sorry for the extremely long ask... :/ <3
No apology needed! I loved hearing your thoughts! :D
And I'm so glad you enjoyed Little Women 1994! I admit, it's an all-time favorite of mine, and I think the casting was excellent. (Also: The soundtrack is SO BEAUTIFUL and somehow captures all of the emotional highs and lows of the story with such atmospheric depth. I can only listen to it if I'm prepared to be fully immersed in the feels!) I'm also willing to admit that it's deeply nostalgic for me, which is a subjective form of praise. :) Do I think it's better than the 2019 version in a number of ways? Yes. Do I understand that 2019 was many people's first and/or favorite Little Women film, and respect their excitement for it/attachment to it? Also yes.
I agree with you though, that having two actresses play Amy in the '94 version is probably the weakest aspect of an otherwise strong film. I know it's a tricky thing for filmmakers, but they could have gone for two people who looked and acted more like the same person, at least. That said, having Florence Pugh (clearly a grown woman) prance around and pout like a little girl in the '19 version didn't convince me, either. xD "This is just...weird," said my friend, and I was relieved to know I wasn't the only one thinking so.
Even though individuals like Florence Pugh are very good actresses, the ‘19 cast just didn’t work for me overall. I didn't believe for a minute that any of them were real sisters. And while I've seen Timmy in one really moving role (Beautiful Boy 2018), his acting has done nothing for me since. He and Emma W. seem to share the same overreliance on Pensive Eyebrows, but exaggerated facial expressions does not good acting make. xD These are just my opinions of course, and I have nothing against any of these people personally.
I might have a little something against Greta G. but only in the way I have something against any filmmaker who claims to love a classic work of literature and then sets out to "fix" everything "wrong" about it. That's a good way to make me exile myself from polite company until I can control my seething.
So, full disclosure: I did not like Little Women '19 very much. At times it felt like a high school play. Fun maybe, but unconvincing. Certainly not true to the text. The costuming did not deserve the praise it got, IMHO, and the modernisms inserted into the dialogue were downright jolting. And that total failure to stick the landing. What was with that ending? I couldn't decide if Greta had just run out of steam, or was working through her own mixed feelings about life and love in general, or if she was going for a pick-your-own-quest in a way that really doesn't work. Oh well. I will say I liked a couple of scenes, though: The depiction of Jo's editing process (a.k.a. Writers Feeling Seen) and Amy's speech about being good versus being great (oof). Pugh did some excellent acting in her scenes with Laurie—however, I didn't think Timmy brought anything equally compelling to those scenes. Overall I liked the cast of '94 much better (and for many of the reasons you mentioned)!
As for the age difference between Jo and Friedrich in '94—sure, they could have used a younger actor for him, but Winona Ryder was 23 or thereabouts when she played Jo, so I wasn’t disturbed by it. I thought Gabriel Byrne made a sweet Professor Bhaer. Granted, when I was younger, I was fully on board the Jo + Laurie bandwagon, and as a little girl of about Amy's age, I surely had a crush on Laurie. But as I matured, I came to really appreciate Amy + Laurie's relationship, and around the age of 19 or 20 I suddenly and memorably understood the attraction of Friedrich Bhaer. Their dynamic makes a lot of sense to me now.
So! I don't know if you were interested in all of my thoughts, but there you have them! :) Hopefully they won't offend/cause any unkind discourse. *tumblr twitch*

Y'all really need to realize that having Laurie pine after Jo his whole life is not only cruel to Amy but also reversing his whole character arc.
His character arc is about growing up and about accepting change, which if you take his background into account (his parents dying when he was very young and then being tossed around Europe in different boarding schools) makes complete sense. Why do you guys think he proposes to Jo, again, even after he realized that he wasn't in love with her? Because she was the last straw to his childhood.
Adaptations never show this so of course the audience naturally thinks 'wow this guy must really love Jo' when in reality he was in love with the idea of staying in his childhood forever, Jo and Amy just happen to represent that for him. And even then in the sequels is clear that he really has changed and holds no hard feelings over what happened, so why so obsessed with the idea of them? You guys dare to call Amy petty while being salty over a ship that never sailed and in Jo's words never will.
Also people saying that they would've been fine about Laurie not ending up with Jo if he hadn't married Amy is just bullshit, Amy is also part of the first safe place he landed on, but they weren't attached at the hip and that allows their relationship to be fun and lighthearted instead of heavy so it sinks you to the same place.
