Alcohol tips for newbie writers (or non drinkers!):
At bars, people who order “chasers” after their shots are ordering something to wash down the taste of their shot with. This can be juice, soda, more alcohol, or even pickle juice
Hard liquor is generally sold in stores as shots (tiny bottles), fifths, liters, and handles or in ml (50, 100, 200 etc)
Most people can’t finish an entire fifth of hard liquor (vodka, etc) on their own without being very ill
Conversely, many people can finish an entire bottle of wine on their own without being ill
Liquor can be “bottom shelf” or “rail” or “well” -- all synonyms for the cheapest version of alcohol a bartender has. Bars generally keep several “levels” of alcohol stocked
You order a drink with the alcohol first, then the mix -- e.g., a “vodka soda” or a “Tito’s and tonic”
When you “close out a tab”, you pay for all of the drinks you’ve had that night. Either the bartender already has your card (you “opened a tab” earlier) or it was quiet enough that they just kept an eye on you and tallied your bill up at the end
“Doubles” are drinks or shots with double the standard pour of alcohol
In the US, most shots (pours) are 1.5 oz by default.
Mixed drinks (gin and tonic, vodka lemonade, cosmos, etc) are generally made up of 1-2 shots and a mixer
If you don’t specify which type of alcohol you’d like in a mixed drink (vodka cranberry, for example) the bartender will put whatever the “house” liquor is -- and this depends entirely on the establishment. A dive bar will pour rail by default, whereas a nicer tavern might make all vodka cranberries with Tito’s
PLEASE TIP YOUR BARTENDERS THEY WILL REMEMBER YOU I PROMISE

Okay no legitimate suggestion for people who like. Host parties.
If someone at the party is not drinking, for any reason, and they get like. A soda or something?
Garnish it.
It’s fun. It like, upgrades it and eliminates at least some of the “everyone is drinking pretty drinks and I have a lame soda” thing. It looks nice. And especially like, a citrus peel twist- you can express those oils and it give the drink a smell that I associate with cocktails without the alcohol.
My friends did this in college with like. They would make ALL the drinks colorful and fun to eliminate any judgement or pressure around drinking alcohol, because everyone had something that looked cool. The regular punch was just as chock full of candy and fruit as the alcoholic punch.

oh my godddd that's so sad. tw again: talk of withdrawals and alcohol/drug abuse
how would lawrence handle withdrawals if he just immediately takes them off it? especially if his kids get weepy and beg, or even violent and angry. and the sickness!!! sorry can u tell i'm a sucker for drug whump haha
speaking generally now since we r on the topic: would he allow the occasional glass (or even a sip) of wine to the kids? occasional edible/blunt/etc? why is he so against them drinking?
Sorry this is so long again!!
CW: Parental whumper, drug whump, drug addictions, mentions of alcohol
He would call the best medical professionals he knows to either help him or give him advice, including mental health professionals. He'd be much more patient and understanding once his kids start going through the withdrawal, because he remembered how awful it was for him.
Surprisingly he'd be pretty good at helping them, but of course he'd have his flaws. He'd be hella manipulative and get overly emotional, especially for Marshall, since he knows how well he can be guilted into doing/not doing certain things.
Another big flaw is his overbearingness. He wouldn't give them any privacy whatsoever, and would check their rooms often for any leftover drugs he might've overlooked.
The only way any of the three would get drugs in the first place is if he gave them some sort of freedom outside the house.
Sadie and Nathan would be the best in this scenario since they could've been addicted shortly after he kidnapped them.
Maybe that was even the reason why he kidnapped either of them in this hypothetical AU, "because they were suffering and needed my help!! It'd be cruel of me just to watch them slowly kill themselves. My actions are 100% justified!" In this AU, I could imagine he'd be a little less sensitive to drug addictions.
And onto the alcohol...
I could imagine he'd let them have one or two sips, but only if he's sure they wouldn't like it so they'd spit it out with disgust. Sadie and Marshall would be most likely to give these reactions.
He wants to them to think all his wine is gross or tastes bad, just so they'll stay away from it.
"Hey, Marshall! Wanna try this new wine I got?"
"You're actually letting me try wine? Oh wow, thanks! I-- oh my god, what is that?!"
"Snake wine! You said you always wanted to try wine, right? This is probably my best-tasting one yet!"
"...what do you usually drink? Never mind, I actually don't want to know..."
He is against them drinking because not only does he have some unsavory experiences with getting drunk and seeing others get drunk, but also because he still views them all as children.
It's hard to say if he'd be 100% okay with anything marijuana-related, but maybe an occasional edible or CBD gummy would be fine if it were for medical purposes, like for Marshall's migraines.
He does support recreational marijuana use, but he still thinks it's very different when it applies to his kids.

The bottle smashes into the wall with a loud crash, breaking the silence of her apartment. Solana hiccups, frustrated sobs wracking her person as she follows the same path she’d flung the bottle moments before- her fist colliding with the wall and staying pressed against the cold wood.
She’s drunk, and for once it had only furthered the emotions she’d been trying to drown.
Her breathing coming in little ragged motions that shook her whole body, she swear under her breath.
“i don’ understand..”
She hiccups,
“no matter what i try, nothin feels any better-!”
No matter what she tried, where she ran- it never stopped. The cold, swirling emptiness and the fear and the stress.. they were always looming, ever present, never far from view.
She was tired.. so tired of putting on a show, of never settling anywhere out of fear, of begging for scraps of attention from strangers and drinking to fill a void, of doing meaningless little jobs to keep herself fed. It felt like she’d tried to change it, to fix it many times- only to wind up right where she’d started.
Her fist falls away from the wall as she crumples to the ground and rests her head in her hands, fingers digging into blonde curls.
“gods, what-”
She sniffles, her apartment feeling dark and cold around her as her tail wraps around herself.
“-what th’ hell’s wrong with me..”

Me: *Talking about writer’s block with a co-worker*
Co-worker: Weed works wonders for that!
Me: I don’t smoke or do edibles
Co-worker: You’re missing out
Me, internally: -____- please shut the fucking hell up
Me, externally: I’m really not
(I also get the same response when I tell people my age I don’t really drink. And like, I shouldn’t have to have some fucking tragic backstory or a terrible experience with both smoking weed and eating it or drinking as an explanation to why I don’t do these things. “I’m not interested” should be reason enough. And it’s true: I’m not fucking interested.)
