wondering about Frank and insects but specifically about how it looks like the WH insects are highly stylized, so does Frank even know anything about real butteflies/insects?
& if he saw a real one, would he recognize it? are all of the species names he applies to the WH bugs real, or are they all made up like "Vibrant Eyespot" or "Fluttering Heartwing"?
and then there's the question - does the neighborhood have some of the more 'undesirable' bugs like moths, worms, roaches, spiders? does it have bugs outside of the generic groups of beetles and butterflies? like are there mantids? leafbugs? dragonflies? weevils? or are those too specific/complex/not-cute for the Playfellow Workshop to have included?
and then there's the question of what are the bugs? props? puppets? are they alive or do the neighbors just perceive them as such? Do they even exist outside of art, storybooks, and animated segments? I highly doubt they're alive like the neighbors are, since in the gif of Frank's head spinning, the framed butterflies' wings are moving. which is kind of horrifying if you think about it for more than a second.
just... the critters Frank loves so so so much being a complete fabrication... every piece of knowledge he prides himself on / delights in knowing being utterly Untrue... oof
I’ve been thinking about Mcsm again so I decided to work out my Soren design for my Scattered Feathers Au — a combination of my self indulgent rewrite Au (Scattered Pages) and a wing au (Minecraft Flying Mode).
On the wing au side of things, Soren has elytra wings (based on earwig wings) which are apart of the End family. the tail and antennae follow the earwig inspiration, the face markings are based on the actual item elytra and the white pupil/miscoloured sclera come from being apart of the end family.
Though something unique to Soren would be the state of his wings, I wonder what happened to them 👀
I’ll be delving more into this Au in the future, just know that Soren plays a big part in it (delving into how his books ended up where they are and how some of the important/powerful artefacts were made) and he is not having a great time.
I'm a bit late for Halloween, but meet the Marbled Orb weaver! They're also known as pumpkin spiders thanks to that vibrant orange coloring and because by October they've grown in size after feasting on insects all summer long!
They're fairly docile as long as they don't feel threatened, and as with most orb weavers aren't venomous enough to cause significant harm to humans, though you still shouldn't handle them unless you know what you're doing.
i feel like i am losing my mind a little bit bc i spent over half of my counselling appt talking about my fear of spiders and this lady kept telling me i should just kill them, and that the only way to get over my fear is to kill them, and i shouldnt catch and release them anymore ??
and now i am thinking about it and wondering do they actually remember how to get into the house,,,,,, if i put them way on the other side of the house in the garden under a plant where its safe, will they just... come back inside? because I don't remember ever seeing any duplicates of spiders that I caught and released, it seems to always be a different looking one each time so :|
but she just seemed so confused and kind of amused by me trying to explain how i think that like... every life has value and I don't think I should be killing spiders if I can avoid doing that. and she straight up laughed at me saying that they are fascinating very interesting little critters.
i don't know, i just feel kind of sick i think. that was just really not what i was expecting and I'm confused like... is this ... the only way I can get over my fear of them? to just start killing them whenever i find one in the house?? that doesn't seem right at all to me but maybe I'm being too soft or something
they talk about values in DBT and how you must make sure your actions don't go against your values, and this seems very backwards to that, especially since this woman started the DBT program at the hospital. so i feel like maybe it's wrong of her to be telling me this, but also maybe she's right about this. idk !!!
Q: Do other bugs than wasps get scared by a party popper?
A: Yes!
Q: Do bugs get scared when you play instruments near them?
A: No.
Q: Insects with shiny shells have reflection mapping with a skybox texture reflecting the current weather outdoors. Do insect shells also reflect the wallpaper and flooring indoors like the mirrors do?
A: Yes! It's hard to tell in the pictures below but you can see the wall pattern on both the model and the bug itself. The flame pattern is most clear in the bottom picture.
Reflection mapping might not be the coolest thing if you're working a lot with 3D models but I think it's a neat detail!
Fly Guy is my newest guy, and Blank is my oldest I still use on a technicality. Since I draw these dudes in various outfits a bunch I wanted to draw them together, so I did :)
The wasps always get a bit antsy looking for food during Autumn so I decided to help out a bit! Good to know I've made a good impression on the local wasps community.
Maybe it's because I've been playing these two games back to back recently, but not only does Lilith look like Kalos Pokemon to me, she looks like a one that Diantha could've used in her team.
I can understand having a preference for one type of pet over another, for a wide variety of reasons (e.g. allergies, what goes in to taking care of them, your lifestyle, etc) but I'll never understand people who hate a certain type of pet. Like self-professed cat people who say they hate dogs, or vice versa. I've had dogs my entire life, and I consider myself a dog person, but I do like cats, too. Why wouldn't I? They're soft and cute and do funny things sometimes. Even when it comes to pets that I don't find as interesting, like fish, I don't hate them. And even ones I'm legitimately scared of, like tarantulas . . . again, I don't hate them, I'm just afraid of them, just like I'm afraid of all arachnids. It's an irrational fear, but it's one deeply ingrained in me nonetheless.
Anyway.
I just don't understand when people are like "I hate cats" or "I hate dogs" . . . how can you hate an entire species of animal? Being allergic or afraid, okay, I can understand that. Even if I don't understand being afraid because you've been attacked before (I have been severely bitten by dogs and severely scratched up by cats), I'm afraid of arachnids even though I can't remember the last time I had a spider bite, so you know, fears are fears, you can't control them. But hate? I just don't understand it, man. Hate an individual animal, sure. Just like humans, individual dogs or cats can have bad temperaments and behaviors. But a whole species? When most of the individual animals in those species are so easily befriended? It just makes no sense to me. Again, I get having a preference for one pet over another, especially if the needs of one animal suit your lifestyle while the needs of another don't. But to hate a whole species . . . I will never understand.
going two layers deep in a fantasy to 1) a world where the bird trading cards from that make some noise prompt are real and then 2) world where they have insect trading cards of the same variety
i cannot figure out why I get nightmares every now and then where I'll be freaked out by my isopods 🤔 In real life, I love and adore them and am never freaked out by them unless occasionally seeing a dead one triggers an innate fear response in me, but even that is rare!
but once in a blue moon I'll have a nightmare that features them in a pretty normal way except I'll react to them as if they're maggots - it's so strange. even in the nightmare, I'll know it's wrong, that I shouldn't be feeling so scared of them, i /love/ these lil guys, but my body and brain react as if I'm looking at a bunch of maggots or similar. ITS REALLY WEIRD
