so i just read the usda’s recent inspection report from the miami seaquarium about their dolphins and… dear god, those poor animals. interactions with guests every half hour with no breaks, being starved and ignoring veterinary recommendations, it’s just truly evil. im so disappointed that imata, american humane, and ammpa have accredited them and i won’t support those organizations in the future. they need to get toki out of there ASAP

Fandom: Percy Jackson
Prompt: Dionysus; Wine, Cups, Dolphins, and Goats
Summary: Percy's cousin and friend on Sally's side helps him celebrate his 21st birthday right.
Word Count: 1,843
Category: Fluff
A/N: I also wrote this oneshot with Percy and his cousin being besties, loosely related to this one! You don't need to read one to understand the other, but in my mind they're in the same universe
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"IDs, please."
I grinned and nudged my cousin excitedly as he pulled out his driver's license and handed it to the bouncer before us. Tonight was his 21st birthday, and this officially marked the first time he got to use his card to get in somewhere.
"Okay, go ahead," said the bouncer, passing our IDs back before stepping aside. "And happy birthday."
"Thanks," said Percy with a smile and a nod as we headed into the bar. I beamed at him, dropping my hands onto his shoulders and jumping up and down a little.
"Welcome to adulthood, Perce! First round's on me, but you put in the order."
"Alright," said Percy, laughing a little at my antics but heading over to the bar with a smile anyway.
After a full-family day of celebrating Percy's 21st birthday, I'd asked for the honor of taking him to his first bar. He'd been all in, and I'd brought him to my favorite place in the city.
Despite being close cousins if you looked at a family tree, I hadn't gotten to be a part of Percy's life until the very end of his high school career. I'd been separate from the family I shared with him and Sally, escaping a bad situation when I was young without looking back. Once I'd gotten to college in New York, however, and knew I had family in the area, I decided to reach out and see if it would be worth reconnecting. And it had turned out to be the best decision I could've made.
My Aunt Sally was absolutely incredible, that went without saying. The few memories I had of her from when I was young were the things that had made me want to reach out in the first place. But finding Percy, who was only a few years younger than me, was like getting the little brother I'd always wanted. Even a little later, when a monster almost took my head off when Percy and I were out getting lunch and I learned about all the Greek mythology stuff, I didn't have even a second of regret over having these people in my life.
Luckily for me, Sally's clear-sightedness ran in the family, so I wasn't completely out of the loop when things came up. And, even better, I could look around the bar and feel confident no monsters were about to interrupt me and my little cousin celebrating his 21st birthday.
"Alright, first a toast," I said, raising my glass towards Percy once we had our drinks. He lifted his, too, grinning at me as I continued. "To you, Percy Jackson, hero of AHS swim team, son of Sally Jackson, and the best cousin I could've ever hoped for."
We clinked glasses, Percy still absolutely beaming, and took the first sips of our drinks. The night had officially begun.
We stayed in the bar for a few hours, laughing and dancing to the live band and occasionally refilling our drinks. Finally though, with a little less than an hour and a half to go before midnight, we wandered outside, smiling like idiots with our arms around each other.
"That was fun," Percy decided as we nodded a goodnight to the bouncer.
"I'm glad. And remember what I told you about drinking lots of water."
"I will. Maybe it'll work even better for me since I'm a son of Poseidon."
"That would be sick."
"Yeah."
We both stood there for a moment, letting the cool night air wash over us, a serious relief for the end of the summer. Percy had planned to spend the last moments of his birthday at Camp, with his girlfriend Annabeth and his best friend Grover. I knew it was time for me to let him go, to get us each a cab and head our separate directions, but I still didn't quite want the night to end.
Apparently, Percy felt the same way. He turned to me, a mischievous grin on his face and a light in his eyes that definitely meant trouble.
"Do you want to come back to Camp with me?"
I laughed, smiling a little even as I shook my head. "Perce, you know as well as I do that I can't. I wish I could, but there's no way for me to get in."
"Actually... no one knows how he did it, but a really lost pizza delivery guy made it through one time."
"If no one knows how he did it, how am I supposed to replicate it?"
Percy shrugged. "I don't know. But it's possible."
I paused, debating with myself for a moment. Worse-case scenario, I couldn't get in and I had a much longer cab ride than necessary. Not ideal, but not the end of the world either. And best case, I'd finally get to see the famous Camp Half-Blood and hang out with Percy and his friends.
"Alright," I finally said, turning back to Percy with a smile. "Let's give it a shot."
"Cool. Then I'm sorry for this."
Before I could ask what he meant, Percy held out his hand and threw a golden coin I recognized as Olympian money onto the street. At the same time, he shouted something in what I guess was ancient Greek, and the pavement before us started to bubble. A moment later, a smoky gray taxi rose out of the ground, suddenly sitting and waiting just in front of where we stood on the curb.
"Whoa," I breathed, a smile making its way onto my face as the astonishment wore off. "That is so cool."
"Maybe wait until after the ride to decide if it's cool."
Despite that shady warning, I got into the cab when Percy opened the door and climbed in with me. In front of us across the driver's bench were three ancient old ladies. It took about thirty seconds for me to realize they only had one eye between them, at which point only love for Percy kept me sitting in the car.
The ride from the bar to Camp Half-Blood were a few of the worst moment of my life. It was terrifying from start to finish, and although the travel was incredibly fast, there was also a stretch of that time where I thought we'd never get out of the cab alive again.
After Percy convinced the drivers, apparently the Gray Sisters, to take me even though I was a mortal, and after they spat some poetry about Apollo meddling to help Percy as a favor in the near future (which Percy seemed less than thrilled about), the car finally came to a stop. I rushed to get out, making a beeline for some bushes in case the motion sickness was enough to make me throw up. Thankfully, it wasn't, and when I turned around the cab was gone, leaving me and Percy on a darkened stretch of road.
"That was the worst thing ever," I declared. Percy shrugged, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Fastest cab service in New York."
I just shook my head, closing my eyes and then immediately regretting it since my world was still spinning. When I opened my eyes again, Percy had moved past me to the edge of the forest.
"I figured we'd try to go in the back way, by the woods here," he explained. "We're pretty sure that's where the pizza guys come from."
"Would those be the monster-infested woods you've told me about?"
"Yup."
I sighed, long and heavy, letting the last of the adrenaline drain away. Then, I managed a smile at Percy.
"Alright. Let's do this."
Percy pulled out his sword as I followed him into the woods, incredibly tense and jumping at every single noise. I couldn't tell exactly where the barrier to Camp Half-Blood was, but I didn't run into any invisible barriers, and by some miracle we didn't run into any monsters. After a while of walking, finally, we came to a beach, and not far from us I could see two figures waiting.
Percy turned back to me with a grin as our feet reached the sand.
"We did it."
"Did we seriously? This is Camp?"
"Yeah. The cabins and everything else are another walk through the woods, but this is the Camp beach. Annabeth and Grover are up there."
"Hell yes," I said, grinning as I moved to walk next to Percy. "Lost pizza delivery guys have nothing on me."
Percy and I high-fived, and as soon as they noticed me, Annabeth and Grover threw their hands up in the air and waved me over.
"You made it!" cried Annabeth, pulling me in for a hug. "How did you make it?"
I shrugged as we pulled apart, then immediately turned to pull Grover in too.
"No idea. However the pizza delivery guys did it, I guess. Whatever it was, I'm glad I'm here."
"Me too," said Percy, slinging an arm around my shoulders. We shared a smile, and then I turned away to reach into my bag. I pulled out the last surprise I'd been saving and faced the group again with a massive grin, two wine bottles in-hand.
"Don't tell your camp director," I said, smirking a little to myself. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover made a perfect scale of worried (Grover) to cackling, laughing happy (Percy) with Annabeth in the middle. I passed one bottle to Percy, then opened the first bottle and poured us each a glass. "To Percy! Happy twenty-first to the greatest cousin and friend I ever could've asked for. I love you, and I can't wait to drag you on every ridiculous, non-lethal adventure I can think of, from now until forever. And you have the next year to prepare for how many times you're gonna hear Taylor Swift's 22 at your next birthday."
"Hear hear!"
"Cheers!"
"Can't wait!"
The four of us clinked our glasses, and a moment later (like it'd been planned, which it probably had) a literal pod of dolphins burst out of the water, dancing and swirling in the waves. Percy groaned next to me while Annabeth, Grover, and I laughed.
"Poseidon knows how to put on a show for a birthday," I said. Percy sighed and shook his head, then dropped into the sand. The rest of us followed right after him, leaning back in the sand and watching the ocean sparkle and stretch out before us. The four of us stayed out there long into the night, laughing and talking and drinking by the surf.
When we finally decided it was time to head to bed, the trio helped me sneak through the woods again and into the heart of Camp. I wandered around happily, taking in everything while Percy and I made a beeline for his cabin. I'd have to leave earlier than early tomorrow to keep us all out of trouble, but for just one night we could manage to get away with it.
A Half-Blood's life was full of crazy, and even though I wasn't one, I intended to be part of every single thing that I could be part of for Percy, Annabeth, and everyone else he cared about for the rest of his life.

Who would be the DC parents for the Science Kids? I can see Aurore being Aquaman’s daughter (and creating fake rain with hydrokenisis like Lapis on Room for Ruby). Jean would be Zatanna’s for obvious reasons. Simon could be Flash’s kid (using his speed to edit his videos even quicker) and Reshma’s could be Poison Ivy, I guess (reference to class of heroes, where she is Isabella).
Aurore: Aquaman
Tumblr media
A lot of her stuff is waterproof from her books to her electronics
Would join the school’s swim team, but that doesn’t seem fair
She hates dolphins. They’re just all fucking bastards…
Aurore has a tendency to smack sea food out of peoples hands. She knows most of them!
The Beauréals experimented with sperm and egg donors to ensure they had perfect, well-rounded children. Though, they didn’t account for Aquaman being a sperm donor
Mireille: Black Canary
Tumblr media
When she was born, Mireille cried so loud and temporarily deafened everyone on the hospital floor
Black Canary helped take care of Mireille for three years before she had to leave for a few missions. She occasionally stops by to help Mireille with her powers and to intimidate Alec
When she heard Theo was being bullied at school, she walked right up to the bastard and screamed
Mireille has some light streaks in her hair
Jean: Zatanna
Tumblr media
He’s pretty good at talking backwards
Has never failed a single magic trick, and if someone tries to mess one up, they can expect a flock of doves in their locker
Occasionally leaves a few roses in a certain brunette’s locker
After his wife left, Dejah went out to clear his head, met Zatanna at a bar, and now he’s got a magic son
Lacey: Beast Boy
Tumblr media
She still has her normal skin tone, but when she turns into animals, she’s mint green
Her favorite forms are mountain lions, lemurs, and just any animal that’s good at climbing
Not technically her dad. Beast Boy donated some of his blood because Lacey had some medical problems when she was born
He’s more like her godfather
Also, she’s not a strict vegetarian, but sometimes eating meat makes her uncomfortable
Cosette: Static Shock
Tumblr media
Can charge ten phones in under three seconds
Braids its hair back so it’s not sticking up at the ends, becuase that gets annoying fast
Her mom participated in a newly funded military program involving superpowered sperm and egg donors
Will annoy you with 90s slang, courtesy of her dad
Cosette: Dayumn! What’s got you trippin’?
Jean: Please speak according to our current decade!
Cosette: *Scoffs* Buzzkill.
Jean: That! That, too!
Zoé: Batman
Tumblr media
Zoé served as one of his many, many Robins before she moved to Paris after an… Incident at her school
She was surprised to find herself in a classroom of superpowered teenagers, especially since she knows most of their parents
Audrey had several affairs, so why not one with Bruce Wayne?
She keeps a lot of weapons on her person
Incredibly athletic, intelligent, and able to take down any superhuman
Zoé: *Looks at Marc* … So, did Dick do Starfire, or what?
Marc: Starfire
Tumblr media
On Tamaran, his name is pronounced as Myzan'r
When he gets angry or upset, Marc’s eyes glow bright green as a sign that he’s charging his laser eyes
Is FIERCELY protective of his brother
For his protection, Starfire and [Censored] had Marc live with Penny and Alyssa Anciel after his aunt attempted to sell Marc into slavery like she did with Starfire when they were younger. Long story short, Marc tore open an alien ship with his bare hands when he was seven
Tamaraneans are known for their iron stomachs, so this guy will eat just about anything you put in front of him
Marc: I’ll have you know, I have a refined pallet.
Cosette: “Refined,” my ass. You ate a meat lovers pizza coated in chocolate syrup and sour gummy bears.
Denise: Wonder Woman
Tumblr media
Already tall, strong, and insanely gorgeous like an Amazon, so why not?
Like Marc, Denise is VERY protective of Cerise
Was close friends with Flavio Cabello’s grandparents back in the 40s, and because of that, she created Denise the same way she was created when Flavio and Pilar were having trouble conceiving until they had Cerise
Wears a LOT of jewelry, so no one questions the silver cuff bracelets
Simon: The Flash
Tumblr media
Can edit fifty videos in three seconds and is fast enough to escape any assholes trying to shove him in a locker when Denise isn’t around
Sometimes they like to mess with the other students, just when they need a moment of peace and quiet
The Flash saved him from the house fire his parents didn’t bother to safe him from, donated some blood, and now Simon has his powers and a new godfather
He can run across the world in only eight seconds, but still prefers to be princess-carried by Denise
Ismael: Superman
Tumblr media
In the Cool Aliens club with Marc
This guy can get hit by a truck and still keep walking as if nothing happened
Likes to eavesdrop on conversations with his super hearing and then blackmail certain people
Ismael’s egg donor had an affair long before she divorced Fazli
Fazli was able to get full custody after Superman got her arrested. Because Superman don’t take kindly to child abuse
Reshma: Poison Ivy
Tumblr media
Likes to decorate her clothes with flowers and vines. Her style is post All-Of-You-Isabela, VERY colorful
Her hair has some tints of red in it
She was sent to Paris when she was five seeing as it was getting too dangerous in Gotham
Reshma was made in a lab as one of Poison Ivy’s sporelings, and she has a slight magenta tint to her skin
She likes making flower crowns for her friends

Are there any other animals that are like dolphins in the galaxy?
Excellent question!
I think when we're talking about the 'uplifting' process we should go into it with a brief definition.
This is going to be a bit of a long one.
Uplifting involves four core steps
Communication
Proposal
Modification
Integration
---Communication---
We must be able to communicate with the creatures with minimal misunderstandings. This is by far the hardest step, and involves perhaps the most morally questionable actions.
Almost every species with potential for uplift lacks an essential aspect: an attention span.
With dolphins we were fairly lucky - we had many in captivity as part of rescue programs, and because our facilities were so boring compared to the ocean floor, they were far more willing to comply with our initial attempts at communication. [Some dolphin advocates point to this being coercion.]
With the help of specialized class III AI, and a rigorous education program, we were able to establish a shared vocabulary with dolphins - and create basic translation suites for sonar communication.
From there, it's a lot of tedious work fleshing out the shared vocabulary. This process is different for every species because they each have exceptionally unique experiences and behaviors which define their own languages.
We learned, for example, that dolphins lean very heavily on simile, metaphor, and comparative reference for their language when encountering unknown phenomenon. They create new hybrid words to describe them. As dolphins communally learn new things, they revise their words.
For us, these are extremely long 'words', but sonar communication allows huge amounts of data to be compressed into a short, but complex sound.
For instance, the word for 'human' (when we first began communications) was "like-octopus, shell stacking, spinning above, swim poorly, drowning, like-bird, not-bird, rock stacking, shapeshifter, waveshaper, clumsy, gifting, like-dolphin, like-shark, fun"
Moving to the next step not only requires that we know their words, but that they understand many of our words which they have no context for.
Needless to say, it's a slow, frustrating process for all parties involved.
---Proposal---
Once we have a dialogue going with the species, we propose uplifting. We lay it all out for the species as best as we can. We ask them if they would like to a number of augmentations and modifications which will allow them to live more easily beside humans.
For dolphins, this involved genetic modifications, specialized equipment [such as exopods], cultural education, and physical training.
They must also accept that these changes may ostracize them from their former culture. The vast majority of dolphins are not uplifted, and actively dislike uplifted dolphins.
Individual dolphins who accept the proposal are brought to specialized facilities to undergo the modification
---Modification---
The modifications are extensive, and I won't list them all here. But they are both physical and mental.
For example, dolphins are given improved eyesight (to help them relate to humans which are a very visual species).
Besides body modifications, they are also given rigorous training to allow them to become accustomed to typical human social norms, art, and work.
All uplifted dolphins are given arms on their exopods- learning that type of fine motor control is perhaps the most difficult step for them physiologically.
---Integration---
All the training in the world can't guarantee your success once you're emerged in a new culture. After modification, uplifted dolphins live in specialized communities which gradually expose them to the Sol Union. The integration program is like a school and job placement program mixed into one.
Some dolphins graduate within a couple of years, other take decades to adjust. Some never do, and regret their uplift entirely. Unfortunately de-uplifting is not entirely effective or possible at this time.
After they graduate they have equality in the eyes of the law and with few exceptions (typically jobs that they are too big physically for) are able to hold any job or office that a human citizen could.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Born Uplifted:
This isn't one of the four steps, but it's worth mentioning that uplifted dolphin partners can elect to have a child that is uplifted from birth.
These 'born uplifted' are typically far better adapted to the Sol Union, and rarely if ever express regret at their lifestyle.
Other Species:
Okay, getting to your actual question.
The Sol Union is currently in the process of opening communication with a number of species. The two most promising are chimps and octopi.
Octopus communication is so incredibly different from human communication that we've been developing that first step for decades with only small progress. The most promising results have been on a species of octopi bioengineered to live for 80 years - though this bioengineering was technically illegal, and this research is stuck in legal review.
Chimp communication progressed very well, and we were close to moving to the proposal step. Right now, these efforts have stalled because of concerns that the chimps don't 'truly' understand the implications of us increasing their intelligence. Age-old debates about the sapience of our genetic cousins have sparked to life and frozen any progress on this front.
So ultimately, no other human uplifted creatures are out in the galaxy besides dolphins. However, there are a ton of different dolphin species represented in that sample! Orcas, common dolphins, most of the species you could think of.
I hope that answered your question!

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Hardly the ideal milieu to swim among dolphins
As a sort of field trip, Peter Potamus had what might best be called the Rather Brilliant Idea of taking our motley little company at his dive cabin in the Keys to Islamorada's Theater of the Sea, which, as Peter explained, "may not exactly be SeaWorld, but perhaps offers an ideal lesson us divers can learn for once."
"And what exactly," asked Huckleberry Hound, "is that lesson?"
"About how NOT to associate with dolphins, or even interact with them."
The point of which was not lost on as much Peter as our crew when it came to not only watching a rather hokey-looking dolphin show (the which, park management insist, is actually more audience-friendly than SeaWorld, the Miami Seaquarium even, because the seating is designed for better audience interaction with the performing dolphins--heavens to Bubbleland!), but also having an opportunity to actually swim with (rather than merely feeding or caressing) actual dolphins; as a matter of fact, Theater of the Sea has perhaps the longest-running dolphin-swim program in the country open to the general public (as opposed to such which are therapeutically structured for such with specific disorders), yet is careful to have staff on hand insisting on what is and is not acceptable standards for playing and swimming with dolphins.
Which almost got rather embarrassing when, for some reason or another, a rather passionate-minded female dolphin got a little too affectionate for Hair Bear and Square Bear in a shallow-water caressing pool to the point of--well, let's just say the female dolphin got too amourous and had to be directed back to the training pool by one of the dolphin handlers. To imagine bears and dolphins being all the more amourous in their own way, and yet towards each other, is a little silly to imagine.
The point of which was brought up unto Squiddly Diddly (of all characters!), who was preparing for some underwater photography camps for disadvantaged children and youth in the Keys and was spending time at Theater of the Sea when he noticed our presence. It was over lunch when the converse took place.
Squiddly Diddly, in fact, was rather stunned to hear where the female dolphin became too attracted to the Hair Bears for some reason in the interaction pool which allows kneeling visitors to handle and touch dolphins before swimming with same, perchance.
"After all, Squiddly," Square Bear explained, "she approached us first in a rather provocative manner."
"Which, for a seaquarium," Peter Potamus remarked, "could be enough for rather toxic circumstances to ensue. Especially in performance situations."
"Not unlike such at SeaWorld in San Diego," I remarked, "at least twice with the killer whale show. And even then, killer whales are close biological cousins to dolphins."
"Still," Squiddly Diddly chimed in, "would it surprise you to learn where a killer whale like Jabberjaw could be knocked out cold by a dolphin's own snout?"
"Yet he gets no respect, the clyde, by his admission," Bubi from the Hair Bears chimed in.
"And you wonder, too," Hair Bear brought up, "how exactly the performance dolphins can swim almost synchronised like they do!"
Keeping his calm, Peter Potamus, taking stock of just how far even a trained dolphin could go in sexual provocation for a dolphin swim program, took note of his experiences among the natives of Polynesia Uncharted, whose closeness to Nature excusing overt nakedness translated into quite a trusting and yet natural relationship between dolphin and human such as manifests itself in their being especially close diving companions as can be trusted all the more. "But still," Peter remarked, "it's better to let the dolphin approach you beforehand in its own way while diving."
"Even if it were in the shallows," Hair Bear enquired, "as we were walking out heading into the dive?"
"How else?" was all Peter Potamus could respond with. "Doubtless one of the finest lessons I've learned from interactions among Polynesian natives as have yet to be compromised by our so-called 'Civilisation', yet all the while being happy as they are--naked and unafraid, as Nature intended even!"
"I have to admit that may have been my own tagline," I remarked, adding that since we're all rather close as Funtastics are close, I had no regrets in his using my catchphrase.
Squiddly Diddly, admittedly, had close to the last word in admitting that Theater of the Sea may be no Bubbleland, but limiting the opportunity to swim among dolphins to a group pf pools, and charging quite a bit for the experience, is probably a bit too much when it's probably better to wear mask, fins and snorkel and let the dolphins find you in open water.
"And the proverbial smile," Hair Bear quipped, which had us all laughing.
For his part, Peter Potamus felt it best to adjourn back to his cabin, even with the addition of Squiddly Diddly to the enterouge. "Hopefully," Peter remarked, "we may have learned something here--that it's probably better to be out in the water and have a dolphin become attracted to you!" Hopefully, more on that as things wear on.

50 things I probably won't get done before 50
Let's face it, I've been working on varying versions of this list for 12 years. I've never come close to hitting my goal. BUT I have done a whole bunch of things I've always wanted to do, that I probably never would have done other wise, so whether or not I reach the goal, I think this is a good thing to keep going.
I went right back to the original list, and am combining it with all the iterations from over the years. I'm also adding in my travel goals. I always kept them separate because I didn't have the money to travel, and wanted to keep my list achievable, but I'm not as concerned about hitting every goal any more, and also, if I don't travel by 50, then when?
I've made a separate list for the things I've done too, to remind myself of what I have accomplished. The items I removed from the list because I really don't think it's possible, or care if I achieve it, I'm putting back in as bonus goals... they don't need to count, but maybe the opportunity will come up, who knows? And it's good to see where I've come from.
THINGS I'VE DONE
1. hide 43 treasures
2. milk a cow
3. Tie a cherry stem in a knot with my tongue
4. Get a tattoo
5. finish crocheting my tetris blanket
6. Send in a postsecret
7. try sushi
8. Have glamour photos taken of me
9. crochet a hat
10. Go to a strip club
11. dye my hair purple
12. go on a pub crawl
13. have brunch with friends
14. Give blood (well, I tried, but they wouldn't take it!)
15. take part in gishwes
16. try a foreign cuisine I’ve never had before
17. take a chocolate factory tour
18. fly first class
19. do the Colour Run
20. do a nude photoshoot
21. find a signature scent/perfume
22. get a helix piercing

Note
how do you feel about the National Aquarium in Baltimore moving their dolphins to an outdoor enclosure in the tropics soon? I'm sad to see them go but their enclosure at the aquarium has always seemed not enriching enough for animals of their intelligence level. The info is here if you haven't heard about it (hopefully hyperlinks work on anon)
Oh boy, the topic I've been avoiding... *nervous laugh*
This is just my personal pinion, and obviously the National Aquarium is a premier AZA-accredited facility while I'm just a third year vet student. But to be frank: I'm disappointed. Regardless of what's stated in the official press release, it's clear that activist pressure played a huge role in their decision. The timing is just too perfect. It's also a slap in the face to other AZA institutions housing cetaceans, and there is still a sense of shock and betrayal in the zoo community (which makes me feel better in knowing I'm not alone in my disappointment). Rather than make an effort to improve their outdated exhibit and stand firm with to their committment to education and outreach, the National Aquarium almost immediately folded to exactly what activists demand: "retiring" their animals to an offsite sea pen where they are out of the public's eye. This goes against the entire point of an aquarium... connecting, teaching, and inspiring (at least they still plan on doing research).
To add insult to injury, the link you sent seems to negatively portray dolphin presentations and supervised encounters, something every other AZA aquarium does (even though the National Aquarium still offers public "training sessions," which is basically a typical dolphin show without the music). On top of that, they wax on and on about how the sanctuary will allow the most natural lifestyle possible with the dolphins making all of their own choices... yet they're preventing any and all breeding, an extremely natural and healthy behavior that's central to dolphin life. They also don't mention how the dolphins will still be participating in training sessions just like they do here, not only for medical husbandry but also to keep their minds stimulated. This is necessary because they will still have all their meals provided to them and won't be spending the vast majority of their time hunting, like truly wild dolphins would.
That said, if the dolphins must go to a "sanctuary," this is the way to do it. They are not being forked over to some unqualified activist group, but will stay under the expert care of the aquarium. The process has not been rushed in the slightest, and they've spent years scouting a location and preparing the animals for what is going to be an extremely huge change in their lifestyle. I can't help but wonder how they plan on funding the whole operation... the sanctuary itself will bring in little if any revenue (with no presentations, swim programs, or even much public viewing, all in what will likely be a rather remote location, there's little incentive for the public to visit), but will require a full-time staff (transfers from the aquarium itself? Is the entire dolphin care team just going to uproot themselves and move from Maryland to the Caribbean?) and extensive upkeep (sea pens are extremely time and money-intensive to maintain). This isn't a one-time cost either; this facility will be around for decades.
I wonder what the actual animal care and veterinary staff think of the decision. Just like SeaWorld's decision to stop breeding orcas was made with no input from the folks actually on the ground, I imagine they were left out of this one as well. I wish the best possible life to these dolphins, but I'm happy other aquariums and marine parks haven't hurried to follow suit.
