the thing about me is that i want to defend characters that i like So Badly but half the time i don’t even have information on who they’re being compared to so i have to physically restrain myself from doing it. like literally five seconds ago when i ran across a post saying superman was cooler than batman, and i had to remind myself that
a) i know next to nothing about the DC universe
b) my entire perception of batman (and the reason i like him so much) is the lego batman movie. that’s it
fun fact: when this dub ended they straight up killed all the Straw Hats by dropping a ship on them and crushing them all to death. Sanji's cigarette was still censored, though.
Okay, so, real talk, I did not actually like everything in this book, but I still fucked with it SO HARD. Like, honestly, I picked up what this was putting down (a little heavy-handedly, but done so well imho???) and the WAY IT WAS WRITTEN????
Like, I did a course on the Aeneid. And obviously it was a Roman mythos, not Greek, but DAMN, CLAIRE NORTH. I could see my translations!!! Written in the vernacular of english!!! RiGHT THERE IN THE TEXXT!!!! I GOT SO FREAKING EXCITED!!! It's just, such little things. The phrasing of a certain line. The odd usage of certain similes or metaphors that go off about people or places. The strange diversions to explain events or people right in the middle of the text before jumping straight back into the story. IT WAS SO VERGIL GUYS I SWEAR.
(i haven't had to translate the greek myths sorry guys and I read the odyssey so many years ago in english many apologies am working off what I got)
And, like, as I said, it was very heavy-handed as it backhanded the greek poets for ignoring the women but, like, she was right??? It was insane guys. It was absolutely insane. And everyone was so nuanced and had personalities and hopes and dreams and backstories and at points I was worried she was going to sacrifice the guys to further the women??? Which, like, I understand the irony, and obv couldn't super fault her for it, but she ended up balancing everyone out so well??? Like the guys were in the background instead but they were still all unique and had different priorities and shit.
Just, this whole book was such a breath of fresh air. Damn.
they just didn't have to write him as "a great philanthropist"; "a generous benefactor of the empire bay planetarium"; "frequent officer of the empire bay press guild";
"a frequent target of political slander and false arrest because of generosity towards the press"
and at the same time write him as the first of the others to organize drug trafficking; a man who tried to kill all his competitors; "a shady bastard, even for guys in this business"; "ruthless modernizer"; a man who secretly views his close friend as a liability; "the man who killed his own boss" to take his place
"few will moan moretti's passing" from the lost heaven's newspapers and there's nothing like that in the cut-out news reports about carlo's death
So out of curiousity I searched up the lyrics to the 2012 TMNT and ROTTMNT and compared what each song said about each of the turtles and how they connect to each other
Ralph is pretty simple, talks about his agressiveness and personality. How he’s always ready for a fight (Rise) and how he has the most attitude on the team (2012).
Both songs literally just talk about how Donnie’s a big machine nerd. (2012: Donnie is a fellow, has a way with machines. Rise: Donnie rocks machines) To be fair at a first glance Donnie’s obsession with technology is what majorly sets him apart from the other turtles, it’s what every non-fan knows about him. That and ‘oh he’s the purple one, why is a boy wearing purple it’s such a girly color blah blah blah’ can it.
Leo was a bit hard to translate into one character, since each Leo acts majorly different considering 2012 Leo was the leader and forced into all this serious stuff and part of a quadruplet and had all of these expectations while Rise Leo is younger than Ralph (the previous leader) so he wasn’t. But basically both have the tendency to do whatever it takes/go to the extreme for their own purpose regardless of the consequences, whether it’s out of entertainment and silly antics or it’s to save their brothers. (2012: Does anything it takes to get his ninjas through. Rise: Leo’s making a scene.) To put it simply: sheer determination/ambition.
Then there’s Mikey. His defining feature? He’s the feral one. The Jack-of-all-Trades. He just does shit. That’s it, he’s just absolutely crazy, I don’t what to tell you. See, I would say childish, but they are all in fact, teenagers (as the first T in TMNT says) and babied/seen as childish by the other turtles, so he has an excuse. (2012: Michelangelo, he’s one of a kind, and you know just where to find him when it’s party time. Rise: Mikey’s got mad skills).
In conclusion: fuck man I didn’t know I just wanted to do this out of curiosity. Both iterations of the characters are pretty faithful to the baseline of them in general? And those who say otherwise are just being dramatic and salty and most likely hating on one of the versions? Yeah, that works.
I was reminded of this fic I wrote and honestly, still bummed that no one ever noticed (or at least pointed out) that I snuck in a description of the Pietà.
you're both wasted, she just somehow does it so much better. you're crying, about something your stupid ex did or said. and suddenly she appears, looking like an angel aside from the slight sway in her step. she's helping you our of your slump on the floor when you grow pale and catastrophy strikes. you're the most disgusting you've ever been, and still, this stranger holds your hair and rubs soothing circles in your back. gives you a breath mint and sits you back against the wall, asking what happened. you tell her, and her glittery, perfectly made face turns sour. with her heels in hand, she loops your arm around her shoulders so she can help you walk to an uber she called for you. your ex says something snarky to you in passing on the way out, and for her it's the final straw. she whirls around, fire in her eyes and a set in her brow and she slaps him hard across the face. calls him a jerk or a dick or something like that, you can't remember, you were busy smiling at the stunned look on his face as she drags you both outside. before you get home, she gives you a hug and kind words in a bubbling voice and you're thankful for her. thankful there are people out there who look out for people like you, who stand up for people even when they might have trouble standing themselves.
