As a part of my honours project, I was recommended by the honours coordinator to keep a project journal and start a blog (which is why this blog exists!).
Here are some rough sketches of my “protagonist”, and here is the beginning of my honours journal:
Entry 1, 23rd February 2021:
(during intensive week at uni)
I’m starting my concept sketch for the protagonist. Feeling low energy. Today I’m working on my pitch (for uni). Later tonight I will hopefully work on developing some concept sketches. I’m taking inspiration from Yoshitaka Amano’s work.

What is Wulf & Eadwacer?
Hello all! Rora here! Welcome to my new blog, a place to document and share pieces of my honours project. I thought I’d start us off with a classic introductory post.
Tumblr media
A little about me:
I’m a graphic novel/comic book artist and illustrator, Medievalist, creative writer and uni student. Right now, I’m working on creating a successful honours project to get a scholarship for a PhD.
About my honours project:
I’m taking an Old English/Anglo-Saxon story from over a thousand years ago, translating it, and transforming it into a graphic novel/comic for modern audiences.
Tumblr media
My thesis revolves around devices I can use to transform this dark ages text into something relatable and enjoyable for modern audiences (e.g. love triangles, fan service, feminist revision, magical realism, and mental health are just some examples I’m currently working on).
Tumblr media
What is Wulf and Eadwacer?
Honestly, Wulf and Eadwacer is one of the most ambiguous poems in all incarnations of the English language. The words can have many meanings, and the Anglo-Saxons love riddles... so many academics differ on what this small poem is about.
My interpretation is this is an elegiac poem about a woman who has been separated from her first love, Wulf. She is forced to marry Eadwacer -- a man from a neighbouring clan -- to prevent war. This type of marriage was typical back then.
Tumblr media
In the poem, the unnamed woman laments about her situation. She’s angry at Eadwacer. It seems they have been together for some time now and have a child. She alludes to Wulf being hunted like prey by Eadwacer on the island she’s originally from.
What I’ve further extrapolated from this to further flesh out my interpretation:
At the age of seven, the child is sent to live with the woman’s father on her original island. This was commonplace back then, too, as it prevented all the “power” remaining in one clan. It sounds, to me, like Eadwacer is hunting Wulf because of something to do with his and her child.
In my adaptation, I’m working from the idea: “how did we get here?” so I can start from the “beginning”.
Hope you’ve all enjoyed this first post (long, I know).

Worked on character concepts for Eadwacer. Right now I’m seeing a Judas archetype, more on that later.

Entry 9, 16th March 2021
So, I've been out cold sick for almost a week. I caught something off one of my housemates (the bad one). They left their infected tissues in the kitchen, specifically the area where people cook and eat!!! You'd think that a Pandemic would teach people better hygiene practices, jesus christ!). Note: don’t worry, not covid.
Tumblr media
My point, I've not been able to work in almost a week. I've lost a week. This taught me a lot. I already knew that my biggest obstacle this year would be my health, both mental and physical, instead of resources. However, I was thinking about medical conditions I already have instead of an illness I could catch.
Tumblr media
This has made me realise that I need to be more careful with my health (since other people won't do the same courtesy). I've asked my housemates to inform me if they're ill again, so next time I can wear my mask inside my house and gloves when I leave my room. I can't afford to be sick like that again (on top of my other permanent illnesses) because of other people's negligence.
Tumblr media
This may seem harsh, but I'm over incompetence and carelessness, especially in regards to illness. Now I have a week to catch up on. Because I was so out of it, much of my work today is going over previous notes and concept art. I'm trying to get back into the feel of what I was doing.
It may have been only a week, but that illness was intense, and it felt closer to a year. What was that line in Jesus Christ Superstar? "After all, I've tried for three years, seems like ninety".

Entry 8, 9th March 2021:
Today I had my first in-person meeting with Kate, my supervisor. I told her in length about the ideas I currently have, and the direction I’m planning on going in as well as showed her the concept art I have so far.
She was happy with the direction I’m taking it in, and suggested I also think about ways to make this more of a feminist text, which fits with trying to recreate this for a modern audience.
I want to give my protagonist more agency somehow, as well as focus on mental health/mental illness that this situation would create for her. I think that’s a good direction to start with.
Above are more concepts for the Protagonist.

Entry 7, 5th March 2021
My housemate suggested I read Watchmen for inspiration on graphic novel paneling and modern storytelling tropes. While it’s not the same kind of story I want to tell, it will still have value and help give me ideas.
I’ve been trying to organise a time with Erin, my uni’s Medieval specialist, for assistance on some of the Medieval aspects of the story. No meeting yet, but soon to come.
Tumblr media
Note:
Watchman will be interesting to read, but I think I’m leaning towards making my comic layout suitable for Webtoons. I’ve been reading a lot of stuff on how the formatting of Webtoons’ comics has made it easier to read and has brought in more people to comics who aren’t usually part of that demographic.

Entry 3, 25th February 2021
I’m playing around with character ideas but I don’t know really where to start. I’m trying to pull inspiration from the original text.
“Wulf is on an island; I’m on another” (my translation).
Tumblr media
 A note to myself:
Don’t get precious about it (I tend to overthink things and spend too much time getting caught up on being “perfect”). Set a weekly goal and stick to it! One short story for the week, for example (advice taken from in-class talks during intensive week).
Feeling low energy, working on my pitch, further developing concept sketches. Making ethereal scribbles at the moment. Seeing how it will develop from there.
I think I’m in a down cycle.

Entry 2, 24th February 2021
I spoke with Sean Williams today. He asked me what my project was about. When I told him, he lit up with excitement, “I can’t believe I didn’t think of that!”. A good start, I think.
Everyone, so far, likes the idea of turning Wulf and Eadwacer into a graphic novel for modern audiences. He suggested I read The Water Method Man by John Irving, so I might look into that.
Here are a few short points I liked from his talk that I think will be helpful with my creation:
Read other people’s exegesis and read widely
Hook: has to be a question
Plot: summarise in one sentence
Ending: has to be a statement

Entry 17: March 30th 2021
Didn’t have much time to work on my project last week. I was busy completing my first two assignments from my other topics. I’m two days behind on my concepts as a result. Which could be worse, I suppose.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I’ll continue working on my character concepts now. If you hear any crackling it’s just my tired bones.
