Relationships: Dís/Dís's Wife Rating: G Warnings: bring tissues Author's notes: Time is merciless. It devours every single thing it meets on its way… almost. Somehow, a handful of memories remained. Once, they formed a kaleidoscope of life, full of shapes and colours. Now, they resemble a handful of stained glass pieces scattered on the bleak fabric of the past.

These are the letters between Dís, daughter of Thràin, and her beloved wife, Víli.

I found your gift; snuck into my pocket during our final soft goodbye? You have a skilled hand with the chisel, even if you claim it not so, and I can only hope to match the swell of love I felt when I pulled the stone from my pocket with one that my words may pull from you.

My betrothed,

It is such an honour to address you with these words. I am touching my betrothal braid and can feel the pattern you plaited as if it was today and not six days ago!

And now we are apart and I will not see you for three more days… It feels like an eternity. And to think we are to be wedded in seven months! If you were here with me, in the deep mines, you would laugh and call me “too impatient for my own good”. Yes, yes, good things are worth waiting for — but you are the best one, a true treasure, and I simply cannot wait until the day we become One before Mahal the Creator.

I still cannot believe my happiness. Or... do I dare to write “our happiness”, my Princess? Our. You and me. A daughter of kings from a legendary kingdom, a descendant of Durin himself, and a simple Broadbeam lass from the mines. A story I would not believe from the greatest of bards, and yet… Sometimes I wake up in the morning and wonder if I am dreaming a beautiful dream… I am dreaming of the way you smile when you look at me, so tenderly… 

… of the afternoons we spend together, when I listen to you speaking of yet another problem with that latest contract and your clever solution… 

… of the way your hair shines in the firelight, or the way your eyes light up when I show you a new block of carving stone… 

… of the softness of your lips and the way your hand feels in mine as we walk through the newly constructed corridors of your city… our city. 

And of the way you whisper my name.

I love, adore, and worship every single thing about you, Dís. My perfect princess.

If it is indeed a dream, I refuse to open my eyes! The only thing I wish to do is to take you in my arms and hold you close until the end of days, my beloved. My wife-to-be.

Imagine Thorin looking out for you after your bethrothed, Frerin, dies at the Battle of Azanulbizar

Being a similar age to Frerin the two of you had grown up together in Erebor.

He’d always admired you but it was not until after the Sack of Smaug that he’d realised how deep his feelings actually run.

You were running yourself ragged trying to help the sick, injured, and orphaned among the refugee population - never once pausing to take proper care of yourself.

You’d made yourself a true leader in this time of adversity - strong willed, hardworking but tender hearted.

So Frerin had quickly confessed his feelings to you and asked if you would allow him to court you.

After a brief but intense whirlwind of a courtship the two of you were ready to take the next step when Thror, in his ever increasing deluded state, had decided that it was time to take back Moria.

So Frerin promised you that you’d be wed in your ancestral home as soon as victory was claimed.

However, such a time would never come as when the battle ended and the men returned Thorin was the only Durin who came back.

It was he who delivered the news to you of his brothers gruesome death, collapsing on your floor in an almost catatonic state that you had never seen the prince in - shaking with unimaginable grief over all he had lost.

You’d joined him on the floor that night, crying for your lost love, curled up in Thorin’s arms as you consoled one another.

Since that day the two of you had gained a newfound respect and friendship. You’d always gotten along but it seemed that you had a deeper understanding of the sorrow and burden that one another faced.

With no family left and your betrothed dead, you followed Thorin devoutly. He, Dìs, and her sons were the closest thing you had to family.

This was owed in part to your growing up with them and Frerin’s insistence that you be involved in family matters as much as possible.

In the hardest months following Frerin’s death when you were grief stricken and ill, Thorin nursed you making sure you ate regularly, hydrated, and slept enough.

It wasn’t as if he didn’t have enough to be dealing with as the crown prince and now sole leader of his people, but you were his family and he knew that it was his brothers wish that he looked after you

Besides, you had always been a friend and had come to be like a sister to the darrow.

Thorin would make sure that you shared lodgings with him, Dìs, and the young princes so that he knew you were safe and warm for the night.

If the five of you were sleeping out as the caravan of refugees wandered the wilderness then he’d make sure you were tucked up securely with his sister, the two princes in between you, as he watched on.

When the lot of you had settled in the Blue Mountains and Thorin had forged his halls, there was always a warm bed and meal for you.

The pain of losing Frerin lessened with time but never truly went away. On your worst days Thorin would simply sit with you and braid your hair as you both got lost in your thoughts of times long passed.

The intimacy of the act of hair braiding brought you a great comfort and lessened the ache of loneliness. Instead the two of you felt more whole in these moments than any other, relishing in your small family.

Overall, despite the gruffness and sourness that continued to grow in his chest the longer you all strayed from Erebor, Thorin would ALWAYS make sure you felt welcomed and accepted as another Durin. Mahal knows that if his brother had survived that you’d have certainly been one.

LOTR and The Hobbit Characters Taking Care of a Chronically Ill S/O

Faramir

Faramir would be caring and compassionate but also let you still run your own life. Faramir would take care of you and he’s a good cook that would make the foods that made you feel the best all the time. He knows what it’s life to struggle and be overlooked, even in a different way, and so he’d always pay attention to what you wanted. He’d be there to help you on bad days and enjoy getting to live life with you on any day, because he loved you that much.

Eowyn

Eowyn understands fighting yourself and also struggling to keep up with others. She would encourage you to push yourself but above all prioritize taking care of you. She take you on adventures and know when you needed to rest, but still be able to see the world. although make sure someone else is doing the cooking! (Eomer wouldn’t doom you to that torment)

Dwalin

Dwalin would always be there to protect and take care of you. But he’d also train you to fight, on days you were able to move well, still always watching you to make sure you were okay. Because Dwalin knows how much being independent means to you.

Fíli

As the heir to the throne, Fíli knows a lot about responsibility. But he also knows a lot about love and compassion, which is why he’s such an amazing partner for you. With Fíli you learn about the world and it’s people, sometimes spending nights curled up together with books as he asks for your advice and you learn together. He cares for you because he loves you and knows how important you are not just to him but also to Erebor (and to the elves, for without your level-headed-ness around Erebor’s crown prince negotiations would be much more difficult).

Sam

Sam fell in love with you because he could see the strength inside you, even in the body that sometimes failed you. You kept him company while he cooked and tended to his garden, sitting in your favorite chair that he’d put wheels on so that it could go wherever you did. And small, thoughtful gestures like that happened all the time with Sam. He cooked all your favorite foods just to make you happy and on your birthday every year he trimmed his garden into some sweet message.

You take in the beauty of the Misty Mountains. Their perfect reflection in the water. Their silent, eternal presence.

This is supposed to be the best time of your life. You have just wedded none other than Thorin Oakenshield and now you are travelling with him to the legendary Erebor. This Dwarf is not only a great king and a brave warrior, but also an honourable person. And his looks make maidens swoon. Many would do anything in order to trade places with you, become his wife — and a queen. And you would gladly take them up on their offer. If you could have it your way, you would have married someone else.

Heavy steps interrupt your musings. Quickly, you brush away a stray tear and turn towards the sound. It is him. The one you are to call “my lord husband” from now on, whether you like it or not. You close your eyes for a moment and see the smiling face of your beloved, the one you have always dreamed of addressing lovingly as your husband. Now, you never will. You will never wake up next to him and look into his cornflower eyes. You will never see how he teaches your first child to walk. You will never kiss him again nor braid his golden hair. And you will have to withstand the torture of seeing him every day — with his new wife.

“It is time we moved out, my lady wife. If the weather is good, we may arrive at the banks of Anduin tonight,” the King Under the Mountain says. His voice is like a distant rumble of a storm.

“Of course,” you nod and start walking towards the horses and your escort.

“I know you did not wish for this marriage to happen.” His words make you stop in your tracks. “And I respect that. But it is done. I would like to assure you that I will try my best to be a good husband to you.”

That word again. Husband.

“I see,” you look at the iron toe caps of your boots.

A sea of silence grows between you. You hear his voice again. It’s oddly distant, as if he stood on the opposite shore.

“I hope that in time I can earn your respect as well. Or any other feelings beyond…”

“How can you possibly think that?” you interrupt. “Can you not see I do not love you and I never will?!”

Thorin Oakenshield, your lord husband, looks at you with a furrowed brow, making you think of an ancient sculpture chiselled by an artist. Cold and soulless.

“Are you certain, my lady? Many couples like us find…”

“Can you not see? There is no ‘us’ and there never will be! I gave my heart to Fili, not you!”

The name of the king’s nephew echoes against the granite mountain slopes long after you have left Mirrormere behind.

Riding behind your husband, you never see how that very name extinguished a spark in his eyes.

Date Me? (Bofur x reader)

Part 2

To be frank you found Bofur to be insufferable. His overly chirpy demeanor and showy nature had always infuriated you, but his skiting had only grown worse since he had been named as a hero of Erebor. The dwarf had been a thorn in your side since the two of you were young, crudely flirting with you every chance he got. At first his attention was flattering but you soon noticed his propensity to flirt with other dams, a stark sign that he was not serious in his flirtations. The thought that he would so incessantly flirt with you when you were around but then turn his attention quickly elsewhere in your absence was highly insulting. So, as you had grown in age and wisdom you had begun to ignore and avoid the dwarf. Instead, you devoted yourself to your career as a politician, climbing the ranks until you were one of the Kings' most trusted advisors. That was what had led you to this situation.

It was the morn before the annual Yuletide tree lighting ceremony in Erebor's market square. It was the first year since Erebor had been reclaimed that the festival was being reinstated so you were determined to make it perfect. However, one of your performers had fallen ill, flaking on you. For the remainder of the day, you had tried ceaselessly to find another to fill their spot, but all others had been booked for private parties or were taking the evening to spend with family. There was only one other that you could try, and the thought had put you in the foulest of moods.

So here you were on his doorstep rocking back and forth on your heels as you waited impatiently for the dwarf to open the door. Bofur opened the door, eyes widening slightly in surprise as he took in your appearance. "Hello lass, unusual of you to pay me a visit" Bofur chirped. "Bofur" you greeted stiffly, "may I come in for a few moments." The dwarf gestured for you to follow him and disappeared back into his quarters.

The dwarf led you through the short hallway to a plush living area. It seemed that being a member of Thorin's former company had paid off for his quarters were some of the finest that you had seen non-nobility occupy in the mountain. Bofur sat in a large armchair and nodded to the other. Once you had settled down you got straight to business.

"I need your help" the words felt bitter on your tongue, "one of the performers fell sick and can't play at the festival tomorrow night." "I see and may I gander a guess that nobody else can fill in" Bofur questioned back. "Believe me I tried everyone I could before I came here" you retorted. "So, you need me to fill in then" he hummed. You simply nodded in response. "What's in it for me?" Bofur mused. You rolled your eyes at him. "Date me."

Prompt (by a generator and then adapted): In charge of lighting the Xmas tree in Erebor's square. One of the performers flakes and every other performer you know is unavailable. You find one but he says he will only do it if he can have a date with you.

13. What talents do you have?

Rumor has it I can write well. Aside from that, I don't think I have any. Don't get me wrong, there's stuff that I am good at, but not incredibly gifted whatsoever. Maybe picking up languages easily? They come naturally to me, and I'm often told I have pretty good pronunciation? but I'd hardly consider it a talent because I'm just lucky I was raised bilingual.

16. Favorite movie?

Choosing only one favorite movie is absolutely impossible because there's not a single one that means the world to me more than the others, but I'm actually making a uquiz about my favorite movies right now! so stay tuned for that ;)

43. Can you do any other accents other than your own?

Without being ridiculously cringey and borderline offensive? Probably not. I can try the Southwestern French and Argentinian Spanish but I don't, because I don't want to cause any wrath among the people around me, lol.
