hi, thank you for the ask!

8. How do you typically read fic (e.g. phone, laptop, tablet)? Why?

i typically read on my phone because it's the most convenient for me. my phone is usually easily within reach and it's so much simpler to manipulate than a whole laptop. that being said, i do read on my laptop sometimes, but only when i already have it open. (so if i'm working on it and i'd like to take a break, that sort of thing) i also exclusively use ao3 dark mode

14. How do you typically find new fics to read?

from tumblr usually! i have steph's (@inevitably-johnlocked) master list permanently open on my browser and i often go back to peruse through it for new reads. steph has done such an incredible job compiling SO many fics under every conceivable trope, that i almost always find a new fic to love each time i scour her lists, even though it's been years of me following her blog. (this account is only a few months old but i followed steph from the day i joined tumblr 🤭) @alexxphoenix42's lists are also similarly very useful and i visit their blog from time to time. @swissmissficrecs also puts out fic recs that cross my dash and give me new stories to read. other than that, the most direct way i find new fics is when authors (and i follow quite a few on here) promo their own work!

This is inspired by Feel my Heart Banging like a Gun by @thetimemoves. It can be applied to any fic where they dance in a club, but that fic specifically made me vibrate hard enough I cranked out the first panel and then the rest came when I heard David Byrne’s violin version of the song. Anyway go read that fic. So good.

You think I’m the special one, but that’s not true. It was always you. You keep me right.

I know I don’t deserve it, but please choose me anyway.

Sherlock sighs in frustration as he throws the paper to the floor. How is he supposed to do this? 

Every time he tries to think of what he’ll say at the wedding, his heart hurts. His head hurts. Everything hurts. He has a recurring nightmare; he opens his mouth at the wedding and a horrid sort of wailing sound comes out, and everyone’s staring at him because they know it’s the sound of his heart breaking.

He needs help. But the only person who can help him is the one person he can’t ask.

So Lestrade it is.

Lestrade is surprisingly helpful, and Sherlock manages to write most of his speech with a few pointers from him. Lestrade reassures him that John will be happy, which is the end goal.

Sherlock is about to settle down to his microscope and some interesting slides from a necrotic horse liver when there’s a knock on the door.

Sherlock opens the door to an agitated John, who holds up a sheet of paper.

“Is this true?” he says with an odd, wide-eyed intensity.

“What are you talking about?” Sherlock asks, trying to catch a glimpse of the paper in John’s hand.

John thrusts it at him, and Sherlock’s stomach flips over when he realises that it’s the first draft of his best man speech. The one he threw to the floor. Where a nosy DI must have picked it up and...

He’s going to murder Lestrade with his bare hands.

He looks up at John. “Um…”

“Sherlock,” John says, eyes intent on his. “Is it true?”

“I never meant for you to see this, Lestrade-”

“Never mind that, now,” John says, taking a step closer to Sherlock and gently taking the paper from Sherlock’s hand. “Is it true?” he asks, softly but insistently, looking at Sherlock with an expression that’s almost… hopeful? Surely that can’t be true.

But he doesn’t want to lie anymore, so he nods. Just once.

“Oh,” John says, and surely the lovely smile on his face is a trick of the light. Surely the way he steps closer to Sherlock is all in his head, surely the hands sliding up Sherlock’s arms and cupping his face are a figment of his imagination and surely John’s lips against his have a purely medicinal purpose, breathing life and light into Sherlock’s entire body, his lungs, his heart.

“Oh,” Sherlock breathes against John’s lips as he kisses back.

He’s going to have to do something nice for Lestrade. And he’s going to hold on to that piece of paper. It’ll make a good first draft of his wedding vows.

Locked Room by Calais Reno

Summary: John wakes up in a locked room, unable to remember how he got here. The last thing he remembers is his hands covered in blood, trying to keep a soldier from dying. His roommate also seems to be suffering from amnesia, and has decided that John is a delusion.

Excerpt:

“Where the hell am I?”

“Not Afghanistan,” John replies. “But if we’re in London, I don’t remember being transported here. I must have been out for days.”

“No, it’s much simpler,” Sherlock says. “You’re a delusion.”

“A self-aware delusion?”

“Exactly the type of delusion my mind would supply.” He slumps down on the bed. “Now, if you’ll just shut up, I’m going to pass out again, take advantage of oblivion, however temporary. No doubt things will be worse when I finally come out of it.”

It’s an angsty, long-established relationship, recently broken-up story, including parentlock, Mystrade, and characters old and new. Mike Stamford and his family are a friendly presence throughout, Molly is there, finding the unlikely love of her life. Our John starts out quite S4. His journey towards being his better self is long and was very satisfying to write!

Here I’m also sharing the video my dear Bakerstreet edits who was the stories first reader and dedicated beta.

My Year in Review

I have not written a lot this year. 2 fics and 15 ficlets. I started with plotting and writing a real casefic last December and managed about 5 chapters. Then there was a very long general writing hiatus starting June 2023 due to - let's say - challenging IRL events that ended only in October. October was great with the whumptober prompts and I completed the challenge for the second time.

I restarted writing on the casefic in November highly motivated and because I broke my ankle and have been on sick-leave since then there was a lot of writing time. I finished chapter 12 today, 43k words in and there will be "only" two more chapters to write. Depending on my beta I hope to be able to post on AO3 soon in early 2024.

You are def right! The "not a lot" I referred to is biased because I wanted to write much more and am a bit unsatisfied with this. But apart from me no one knows this and sees the result objectively as it is.

Another year gone.

Amidst all of the chaos, fandom has remained an oasis of calm and joy for me. Thank you to all of you, the readers and writers and artists, who keep this place alive. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year.
