March 2024 Wk 4

Ongoing Series - Thai

Two Worlds (Thurs IQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - It would be great if we got the alternative romance with dead Kram from Tai’s perspective (JBL style.) Still I like this show. It’s a little bit like I Feel You Linger in the Air only with a love triangle. And while I'm not a fan of triangles as a general rule, I don’t mind it here because the set up is clever. Wayu and ao are fun sides too. It sure is moving very quickly, which I like. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on. But that’s normal for me with this kind of Thai drama.

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 4 of 8 - They are extremely sappy boyfriends. I love that mom has a secret gf. Could we please have more of them? The love triangle sides are ridiculous, but I do like that it’s all out in the open. I also like they are actually addressing the complicated parental dynamics of owning a sex club. Honestly, I think Khem should have to be a host too. Learn him the right way, girl!

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 9 of 12 - It’s good, I like the fallout and them actually having to deal with crazy fans and past relationships. They’re so good at communicating it’s kind of a pleasure to watch them suffer through external pressures, because I have faith that they can make it through.

To Be Continued (Thai C3 Thailand grey) ep 6 of 8 - They are such cute puppy dads and so clearly meant to be together, the fact that they aren’t is just frustrating. The fight thing was stupid. And not a whole lot happened... plus singing. I’m getting fatigued with this one.

1000 Years Old ep 7 of 12 - Did I miss something happening, or did nothing happen?

Kiseki Chapter 2 (Sun iQIYI) ep 2 of 6 - It’s so boring, there’s so much guitar playing, and it got weirdly voyeuristic (in a very much not sexy way). I’m totally out. DNF

Close Friend Season 3: Soju Bomb! (Weds iQIYI) ep 3 of 6 - I can’t tell if this is trying to be a BL Romancing the Stone, or a BL Hangover, or both. The problem with situational comedy is it must be both situational and comedic, not just option one. The problem with calling something BL, is that it must be BL. This show got 1 of 3 claims correct. 33% is not a passing grade. DNF

Honestly, it's the HANDS with these two. They do beautiful beautiful things with their hands. If you're one of those hands-obsessed BLabies you should be watching LIBTSTA!

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Unknown (Taiwan Tues Youku YouTube & Viki) ep 6 of 11 - So the worst finally happened. The mountain of pain has fallen down upon us. And now, hopefully in the second half things get better for our boys. But what a rough ride. Normally, this is not my style of BL, but everyone is doing such a gorgeous job with it, I can’t fault it… except that it hurts. The red thread symbolism was elegantly done. I’d like to hope we get a reunion in the next one, but knowing this style of series they’re gonna draw it out. There's gonna be a more pain first.

Love is Better the Second Time Around AKA Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 4 of 6 - Those fuck me puppy dog eyes were perfectly executed. I would not have been able to resist either. Gosh they are so damn cute. This is a great show.

Jazz for Two (Korea Gaga/grey) eps 1-2 of 8 - This comes from the Shoulder to Cry On team so I'm scared, but this one is all actors* not idols so maybe they'll be braver. Boy howdy does it have a fantastic opening sequence. Also the lead is fucking adorable. Mr Broody McBroodypants is cute too. Korea sure loves “pretty but broken.” On the JBL end of the spectrum, is everyone in love with their siblings? That’s weird. The dining room scene was painful. All in all, it's good, I'm intrigued. Let's see how you go little show.

I stand absolutely corrected the lead is a member of NEWKIDD (in my defense I'd never heard of them until Build Up last month). I did recognize him from To My Star because at the time I thought he was too pretty to be only a side character.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) ep 10 fin - Again there was overuse of previous footage and maudlin navel-gazing grief over something we knew was going to happen. So I didn’t really feel much emotional connection to the drama. 7 year time gap.? t was a cute reunion but the moral quandary never really got resolved. I don’t know how to rate this, I’m not sure I will ever watch it again, so that is a big mark against it.

There’s nothing objectively wrong with this BL except how upsetting it is because of the foundational pygmalion story - grown man falls in love with an android who is basically both his slave and, by maturity level, a child. Yet that premise is crystal clear from the get go, so we watch it eyes open. The actors are cute, the romance sweet, the physical chemistry on point (of course, it’s Taiwan) and yet I was left ultimately unsettled by the concept, content, and plot. 7/10

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 7 of 8 - I'm so ready for this to be over, and for Gaga to have something good on. Soon please?

Graduation Countdown (Taiwan YouTube) - It's too much to ask me to keep up with 2 minute verticals, I don't have that kind of TikTok endurance training. Waiting to binge.

A Secretly Love (Thai Sat WeTV grey) 10 eps - I watched the first ep but grey is too much work for this inferior of a show. I may pick up and binge if it gets distribution but for now, it gets a DNF from me. KimCop might have held this crap together but Kim without Cop? No thank you.

Lady Boy Friends (Thai WeTV grey) 16 eps - reminds me a bit too much of Diary of Tootsies only high school. Not my thing. DNF unless it turns a corner and is truly amazing.

Tangential to the genre

Other side of the tracks grumpy/sunshine pair who fall deeply in love but, of course, baby boy idol can't date. Boyband but from GMMTV? Control your singing and I'm game.

3/31 The Next Prince (Thai ????) 12 eps - trailer. ZeeNew in a fantasy/historical set in a palace where Zee plays a knight and Nu a prince - YES PLEASE. (Apparently this is just the pilot, not the start of the actual show, see comments.)

4/1 Love is like a Cat (Korea ????) 12 eps - This completed filming Aug 2022(!) which means there have been serious problems with post-production. This is another of Silkwood's Korean+Thai colab projects. Mew Suppasit plays a rookie film star, called the Cat Prince (for his cold arrogance) who goes up against a charismatic puppyish animal daycare director (JM of JUST B). There is a side romance (love triangle?) with a veterinarian. Geonu of JUST B is also in the cast. Dual languages.

4/3 We Are (Thai GMMTV YouTube iQIYI) 12 eps - University ensemble BL featuring PondPhuwin, WinnySatang, AouBoom, MarcPawinPoon - basically the good kind of messy gay friendship group (so more My Engineer and less Only Friends). Looks a bit like the Kiss series but everyone is queer. I'm IN!

4/11 Living With Him AKA Kare no Iru Seikatsu (Japan ????) 10 eps - Kindly Ryota goes off to uni only to find his new roommate is his childhood bestie, Kazuhito. Kazuhito doesn’t have a girlfriend and Ryota tries to help him figure out why, they fall in love along the way. Same director as Old Fashion Cupcake.

4/11 Gray Shelter AKA Gray Currents (Korea ????) 4 eps - SooHyuk is only just surviving and reunites with YoonDae, an old friend. They end up living together. One of the leads is played by Choco of Choco Milk Shake.

4/18 At 25:00, in Alaska AKA 25 Ji, Akasaka de (Japan Gaga - may not be global) 10 eps - Yuki lands his first starring role in a BL drama alongside superstar Asami (previously his senior at uni). Said superstar suggests they form a sham relationship until filming concludes. As they actually begin to fall in love, the spotlight begins to burn.

Seriously? You're killing me with these titles, boys.

4/26 My Stand-In (Thai iQIYI) 12 eps - adaptation of Chinese novel "Professional Body Double" by Shui Qiang Cheng. Stars Up (Lovely Writer) and Poom (Bake Me Please) directed by the same team as KP (not a recommendation IMHO - my biggest criticism of that show was the clashing directing styles). This one looks well complicated, lemme try: Joe is a stuntman for famous actor Tong. Joe falls in love with Ming but Ming sees Joe as nothing more than a Tong-replacement. After learning this horrible truth, Joe dies. Joe then wakes up in the body of another man also named Joe. He manages to rebuild the same life as before—with the same people eventually re-meeting Ming. Ming wants Joe back but Joe doesn't understand why. But Ming seems to know what's going on and wants to give him some kind of explanation.

I'm exhausted just trying to describe the plot.

Knock-Knock Boys (Thai WeTV) - 4 college friends conspire to help their friend lose his virginity. Familiar faces like Seng (yes, Billy's previous partner) and Best, news here.

Season 3 Rewatch Drabbles: 3x19 A Curious Thing

Summary: A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my rewatch of season 3 of Once Upon a Time. There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season. Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on Captain Swan’s epic love story.

Killian’s heart rate gradually returned to normal as the adrenaline faded, but with it, his hope faded as well.

This whole situation had completely spiraled out of control. He’d tried so hard, so bloody hard, to do what was best–to protect the lad, to save Swan’s magic, to keep the Charmings and everyone else Swan loved safe. The damned witch had left him with no options.

He couldn’t kiss her. That much was clear. There was no possibility in any realm he would willingly take away her magic.

He also couldn’t not kiss her, or he placed her lad in danger.

He also couldn’t tell her what had happened for fear word would get back to Zelena and she’d exact retribution.

The only thing he could think to do was to get the lad away from the witch’s purview, and even that had gone spectacularly pear-shaped.

He was quite fortunate Swan, the queen and the Charmings had shown up to the boathouse when they had when he’d run out of ammunition or…well the alternative didn’t bear contemplation.

But then Zelena herself had shown up spinning her lies and perfidious insinuations about him.

“Don’t blame me. The captain failed me. He knew what the price of failure was–your son’s life.”

Killian’s heart plummeted as he looked into Swan’s eyes once the witch was stopped and the curse was broken. Her eyes were filled with anger and suspicion.

“Are you gonna tell me what Zelena was talking about?” she asked in a voice as hard as steel “She said you failed her.”

“Don’t listen to her!” he said, hearing the pleading sound of his voice.

“Killian, what’s going on?” she asked, arms crossed. “Were you working for her?”

Killian’s heart plummeted even further. Had she no faith in him at all? Had he not proven, at least to some extent, that her welfare and that of her family were his priority? How could she even ask such a thing?

“The witch tried to back me into a corner,” he said, desperate for her to see his sincerity, desperate for her to see the hopelessness of his situation. “I did everything I could to try to resist her plans.”

“So whose idea was it to kidnap Henry and stick him on a boat?” she demanded.

He closed his eyes, deflating. He was mucking this up royally. “It was mine. I was trying to save him.”

“From what?” she continued, “What is she doing?”

There was nothing for it. It was time to spill the whole sordid tale. “She cursed me. My lips actually.”

Her brows furled. “Your lips? Why?”

Did she really not know? Did she really not see it? “Because she wants to steal your magic. She thought I was the best way of doing that. She knows what we all know-that you can defeat her.”

For a split second he saw something that might have been pride or gratitude in her eye, but then the anger took over again. “It should have been my decision to protect Henry. Whether she forced your hand or not doesn’t matter! I can’t trust you now. How can I?”

It struck him to the very heart, her anger, her accusations, her lack of trust. What could he have done? What could he have bloody done? He’d been like a caged animal with no way out.

And as the scene continued to play out–as her parents looked on him with suspicion as well, accusing him of lying about how he’d obtained the potion, it suddenly became blindingly clear to him.

They’d never see him as a hero. He could never escape his past. A part of him–the part that had dealt with his grief over Liam’s death by becoming the most vicious and merciless pirate on the seven seas–was tempted to throw it all away and embrace his fate as a villain yet again.

But he’d tried that in the lost year. He’d tried it and he’d found that she’d changed him irreversibly. No, that wasn’t precisely accurate. She’d inspired him to change himself irreversibly. He was no longer the villain Captain Hook.

He was Killian Jones, and he’d never abandon her, never abandon her family.

Even if they never saw him as anything more than a pirate.

Note: I'm sorry. This scene always absolutely INFURIATED me, and if I have to suffer, so do you. I will however leave you with the following Gif because 1. I think this is what we ALL want to say to Zelena and 2. Killian with that intensity and anger saying "Damn you, Zelena!" is just...*whew! Fans self.*

LBFAD Rewatch Part 10

1. When your cheap ass friend starts becoming generous and your immediate thought is "is she broken? Is she possessed ?"

2. Okay can we just talk about the creativity of the "shes deeply in love with me and thats why the Bone Orchid is killing her" arch. Like the way they stitched that in there so we could have the whole "I have to get her to hate me " angst. *chef kisses*

3. Xunfeng: Wait so the Moon Queen is not going to live long?

DFQC: Over my dead body >:(

Xunfeng: Or....hear me out. Over HER dead body! Eh? Eh!

DFQC: *jail for Xunfeng*

4. Xunfeng: I cannot give you the sword. You will destroy it. You are the last hope for the Moon tribe

5. Xunfeng kicking DFQC while he is down:

Me: You little menace.

6. Idk how many times I will gush over his acting, but ya'll. Wang Hedi looked soooo genuinely torn. Like his facial muscles rippling with checked anger. His tight grip loosening as Xunfeng's words start to hit home. The rippling anguish in his eyes as he realizes just what he is doing and how much of a risk he is taking. God.

7. Omg the absolute hell ish pressure cooker my poor baby DFQC is in. Like ya'll imagine everyone relying on you and just trusting in you to handle the enemy cuz you got mad crazy powers and you have to sit there and not have a panic attack because you no longer have the mad crazy powers and you will most likely lose either your people or the person you love. OOOH GOD. Get him out of there! I got second hand panic attacks watching this

8. XLH: Im gonna make the Phoenix Crown out of the flowers Big Blockhead planted for me when I came to Cangyan sea.

18. I just wanna say that in my first watch, I did not process that she actually died for the longest time. Despite the whole setup and slow mo. I just kept thinking nahhh DFQC going to think of something and save her. Aint no way he letting her die.

With this thought in my mind, I just imagine how it must have felt for him. How absolutely helpless and devastated. 😭

Ok. I need to address this.

Are there people who seriously think that Stydia was just fan service, out of nowhere in season 6? Seriously ? What series did you watch exactly? There are countless strong Stydia scenes with ambiguous and or romantic implications, or outright ROMANTIC background music in the series, long before Season 6! In 5X14 alone, Stiles asks Lydia to wake up while holding her hand with the song Where's My Love playing in the background. And yet people didn't see the romantic subtext in there? Really ? What do you need then?

Also, I've seen some haters claiming that there was nothing to be surprised about when Stydia broke up in the movie, because Dylan O'brien always hated Stydia, and said in an interview that they would have broken up at the after a few weeks...

So that's wrong.

Yes, Dylan said that, before going on to the fact that he was joking and that the two were meant to be together and happy. It's beautiful denial in some people anyway. To distort the words of an actor at this point to prove himself right.

Then it was Dylan who improvised the Stydia kiss on the cheek in 6X01. My ass he hates Stydia.

Also, quite a few of the cast members themselves were shipping Stydia together. To claim otherwise is bullshit.

And to anyone complaining that Stydia was too long and therefore no longer made sense...

It was fucking slowburn. A slowburn is supposed to be long to get a final realization! That's the point ! Canonically, in their universe, Stydia took 3 years to be together after being friends in high school. Sorry to tell you, but it's not an eternity or unrealistic. Not everyone gets in couple quickly.

Besides, I don't understand this obsession to say that Stydia is not valid because we've never seen them be a couple in a direct way...

You know, it's like complaining that fairy tales end right on the reunion of lovers finally reunited, or their marriage, being done, we have no insight into how their romantic relationship really works. But no one ever gets upset about it, or says it makes the relationship less valid. Besides, it's not a scheme found only in fairy tales, but including in a lot of classic novels with a central romance, or more recently in some romantic comedies.

And honestly? I don't care to see my ship's life as a couple! What matters is the buildup and the fact that they finally end up together in the end. Seeing them in couple mode is ultimately just a bonus, which I don't care about, because I can easily imagine it myself.

Oh, and if you're backing up the Stydia shit script of the movie as confirmation of your dumb ideas about this couple being forced, ridiculous, meant to break up forever, etc, well that just proves you're hopeless. This movie was absolute shit in every way, a goddamn thing that ruins the whole series, and not just Stydia. Even Allison's comeback is stupid. (and I say that as I ship Scott and Allison)

But in addition, knowing that the film still remains in the idea that Lydia is in love with Stiles and visibly sad to have abandoned him, and that Jeff Davis himself said in an interview that the two will most likely meet again... How is this supposed to be a victory for the anti?!

It mostly feels like a stupid breakup made to create unnecessary drama that would probably get a resolution later. Like the majority of couples getting together in a series that continues and has not actually ended its story.

Another of the reasons why I prefer the story to end once the couple are together rather than stretching out and seeing inevitable breakups / reconciliations made to keep the viewer hooked.

And as much as I'm a fan of Stydia, I absolutely refuse that this film be entitled to a sequel one day. It's shit, from A to Z, that deserves to be ignored and forgotten.

Also, those who act like Stydia aren't in a 6X20 couple are... pathetic at best? Everyone forgets this scene where Stydia takes her hand by instinct and where Lydia, remembering her first kiss with Stiles, tells Malia to kiss Scott to help calm him down? No, of course, let's forget this scene to justify our fantasy of: There was never anything ambiguous or romantic about Stydia, including in the last episode, proving that season 6A was a mistake!

Chili + Unsweetened Cocoa Powder = Buddie

Still thinking about last night's episode, holy hell was it incredible. I'm still parsing my thoughts but I was thinking again about the unsweetened cocoa powder and how that was the "missing ingredient".

So I think it's obvious that the cocoa powder is meant to represent Eddie (at least since Buck is making the chili in this scene I mean). But I wanted to take it a step further.

Not all of chili has meat in it; there are vegetarian and vegan options out there as we all know. But I found this and thought it was interesting:

It balances out the dish.

It enhances the flavor profile.

And when you think about it, Buck always appears to be making comfort food that is layered or complex. We saw him with lasagna back in 6x01.

Here not only does he mention it's Bobby famous lasagna and it has 6 different types of cheese, but he mentions that it took him 3 tries to get it right.

Abby, Ali, Taylor = 3 tries

Now we have him making chili that is implied to be Bobby's recipe, especially since he is asking Bobby to sample it and tell him what he thinks.

If you compare these two scenes, Buck has the dish towel on the same shoulder, we see Buck doing some sort of action (i.e. stirring, adding ingredients), he's talking to someone as he cooks, and both scenes involve Bobby and his recipes. The differences are who is sitting at the table, their positions at said table (Eddie facing Buck vs Bobby having his back to Buck), the responses to the food ("It's pretty good" vs "It looks good" "It smells good, too"), the locations (Buck's apartment vs the firehouse), the props (beers vs no beer), Buck's confidence level (even though he says he he had to try a few times to get Bobby's lasagna right, he's still more confident when he serves it up than he is in this scene) and the portions of what's being offered (Eddie & Christopher offered a tray of lasagna and a salad aka a full meal vs Bobby being offered a spoonful of chili for tasting purposes).

And then when we go back to season 5, we also see:

Eddie, who infamously was not a good cook before this season, has now had time to practice and he's been getting tips from Linda. He made a full meal (dessert included) but the only ones we see eating in this scene are Buck and Christopher. Buck is enjoying himself (loudly lol) and Christopher is munching away while teasing Eddie. Taylor is there but only moving her fork around since she ate before going there. "This is really good," Buck says.

In 5x09, Taylor is getting ready to cook, preparing the green beans when she tells Buck she loves him, for the first time. Nothing was actually cooked yet and it was only Taylor doing it. Buck only placed a bowl for her to use on the counter and was pouring wine.

So now from what we know, this all makes perfect sense and gels together really well:

Buck's relationship with Taylor did not end well. Two episodes before dinner at Eddie's is when Buck and Taylor get emotionally closer when Buck finds out her secret about her dad and supports her. In 5x11, we see dinner at Eddie's but we also see Buck kiss Lucy, and then ask Taylor to move in. Lucy who was a stand-in for Eddie who Buck was hoping would return to the 118 even though Eddie was telling him to move on. In 5x13, the truth comes out about Buck kissing Lucy, after she's moved in. The same episode that Eddie has his breakdown. By 5x18, Buck and Taylor are broken up, and we see Buck is helping Eddie to patch up the holes he created in his bedroom wall.

Taylor was cooking for Buck but we never saw it come to fruition, even after they exchanged ILY's. The only time we see a ready meal that Taylor has for Buck is in 5x05 but we never see her make it. And once again, alcohol is in the mix (i.e. champagne; think champagne/wine vs beer). "You did all of this for me?" So suffice it to say, cooking is being used in conjunction with romantic relationships. That's not to say always; obviously, Bobby cooks for the 118 all the time. But when it comes to these particular examples within the context of the story, it starts to formulate a pattern and more importantly, a connection.

Eddie had a full meal that he cooked and fed to Buck who we see enjoying it. Considering the timeline and the events going on in these episodes, it's no coincidence.

Eddie's story has also now come full circle and he not only has mended fences with his dad but also has grown emotionally and begun to process his traumas and heal. We know that he is in position now, or ready, to be able to embrace whatever comes. We also know that Buck is not in that position just yet. So it makes sense that we see Eddie cooking first (who also needed practice *ahem*) during the season he was working on himself (that also heavily echoed his season 3 arc), and now we see Buck cooking and feeding Eddie and Christopher, as well as for the 118, during the season that he will be working on himself (echoing his season 4 arc). So it all boils down to this:

Eddie cooking for Buck & having full meal ready for him (even though we don't see this cooking) -> Eddie was closer to that position, wasn't ready at that moment but he was about to go through a major development that would get him there

Buck cooking for Eddie (ready) & the 118 (not ready) -> he still is moving towards that position, he's not ready yet, he's on his way towards that major development that will get him there

And another solidified connection is Eddie and Taylor. The full breakfast Taylor had ready we never saw her make, same as Eddie's dinner. That similarity should tell you all you need to know. Especially since we do see her start to prepare dinner in 5x09 (green beans) where the ILY comes in and we now have seen Buck twice preparing meals, and not just any meals, but comfort food meals.

And that special ingredient that's missing (that balances him out & enhances his flavor profile) is what Buck is going to find out by the end of this season, though something tells me Eddie will get there first (and I'm almost willing to bet he already has but isn't ready to admit it just yet).

So basically:

s3 trailer & bts & teasers

*spoilers?*

This season is I think 10 episodes. From some pics that Ludwika posted during post-production it's visible in the script that there at least is an episode 310. Also, if we're looking patterns from previous season's trailers then the clips from the s3 trailer most probably are from episodes 1-5, and maybe some short ones from later episodes. Anyways, here's me predicting a timeline!

Ep. 1: Dinner + office I'm guessing the breakfast at Ana's is gonna be the opening scene, just like in s2. Then she goes to the office and chats with Mariana, who looks terrified half the time in this trailer… hmm. In that office scene when she tells Ana about Ferrán she just looks so stressed, which she probably is lmao I can't really blame her. Anyways, I can also see the part from the teaser where Ana makes dinner for them (while Mariana is with Ferrán :SS) also happens in the first maybe 1-3 episodes.

Ep. 1-2?: JC spying He plants the mics and Ana finds them, then JC finds them broken. This might also happen in the first episodes, maybe even in the first one. Also is Mariana sleeping at Ana's place? Ana has the same outfit on in the trailer when she finds the mics and then in another pic where they're eating, and Mariana is in pyjamas. They're really really doing the fake dating?? And is JC still in the house? From the pic it looks like there's a plate where he usually sits, so... I guess... :S

Ep. 3: Chocolates ...is the name of this ep!

Ep. 4: It's happening???! According to the IG story scripts the ladies’ trip happens in episode 4. Now what happens so they end up there, Idk. Where are they going and why, Idk either. What's known is that they're driving somewhere, Ana and Mariana are chatting as usual, talking about who the best driver is (ofc Ana claims she’s the better one). Then Ana mentions that she's tired so Mariana drives instead. Here, it seems like Mariana's about to crash the car into a cow (not a bull) which is what Ana is referring to in the teaser, or a train as written in the script... I think they leave their car and maybe hitchhike to another town? There's this cast member who is referred to as "mecanico" and is seen in the truck with Ana and Mariana. He's not driving Ana's car. So they probably decide to stay the night and hang around the town. It looks like there's a band playing, so I hope they're gonna hang around and just have a nice time! Just them. They also seem a little tipsy in the teaser... So maybe they'll have some drinks and then the teaser part comes where they're chatting and having a moment. I guess after this part is when the kissing from the trailer comes. Now is it actually happening, is it a dream or something else, Idk. It looks real tho... I think the lighting kind of makes it look "dreamy" lol but, the clothes are the same plus them being tipsy... it could be fr. I guess this is one of those too good to be true moments but, it's not impossible! I'm having high hope for this episode. It feels like it'll be a really good one.

Ep. 5-6?: Yo estoy enamorada de Ferrán I think Mariana telling Ana that she never broke up with Ferrán happens after the ep. 4 kissing which is why Ana also looks SO hopeful, and then so confused and let down. Also because the kissing is in ep. 4, they're most probably keeping Ferrán for more than 4 episodes.

Ep. 5-6?: Ana + Elena Ana seeing Elena and the other lady happens in the middle. This show has a pretty fast pace so I wouldn't be surprised if Ana's exploring only lasts for one/two episodes, while maybe Mariana in the same episodes can't get it to work with Ferrán and comes to her own conclusions. Is she gonna see Ana with the other woman? Is she gonna get jealous? (pls)

Ep. 7-8? Reconciliation? I wonder if this is the reconciliation moment after everything goes down with Ana's date and Ferrán. And are Ana and Mariana going to stop seeing each other for a while like in s2? In any case, in the trailer (andthe gif) it looks like Mariana's saying "Ana", and looks surprised and happy, maybe relieved? and the peep Ana’s jacket on the armchair, it looks like the jacket in the photo. Is this Elena's place? I don’t think it is… but there have been a couple of times Ludwika has been filming at Elena's house so I hope they have scenes together and actually become friendly, or even friends :D.

Ep. 9-10: The End Rodrigo has his graduation at some point, maybe that could also be at the end, together with the celebration at Ana's and then lastly Tere having her baby, which ties it all from 101 to 310 together.

Ep. 1-7?: Ferrán Matías Novoa (Ferrán) also posted some scripts. My guess is he'll be in the first half of the season at least if not more. The scene where Mariana is talking to Lucía and Tere maybe is from episodes 5-7? There is this script that he posted but I can't see the episode number... it looks like 307, but I'm not sure. Mariana and Ferrán are preparing to sleep but they are having a discussion about the girls. She's saying "What were you thinking?!" "One: If Ana finds out, she'll kill me. Two: You didn't tell me, and three: I left [the girls] with you so you could bond with them, if not, I prefer leaving them with my mom or my grandma". Then Ferrán says that he's sorry and he didn't want to disturb her in the middle of her meeting and so he had no other choice basically. Mariana says that it's fine but that it can't happen again. What did he do lol?? If there are 10 episodes, then maybe their break up could happen in ep. 7.

(Also Ferrán always buying things for Mariana or Regina and trying to make her stay is just so... just stop lmao. Like their whole relationship started with him buying her a new bike, then toys for Regina without asking, and in s3 it looks like he bought a crib and then in the teaser clip a fkn iMac for Mariana, like we get it.)

Ep. ?: Ana tucking Mariana in At the end of the trailer Ana is in this houndstooth patterned dress, while Mariana is sleeping in her bed. I don't know where or what event Ana could've been to... If it would be work related then Mariana would've joined too since they're still working together (or are they?). Is Mariana actually staying at her house? I don't think permanently but for sure from time to time. Where would this bit fit? There could be so many different scenarios xd

Ep. ?: Ana + JC The Ana + JC meditation trip is very loose in the timeline, I have no idea where this would fit either... maybe in the middle somewhere, after they "split up" again. Also in the script, at the top it looks like Ana is talking to her mom about her dad, and how she doesn't want to see him again. I think he comes to her house, then she visits him at some point. I think her dad has been so absent he barely knows how many children she even has (shown in the script). There's another one where JC and Ro are at a golf course with JC's dad, so apparently the grandpas are joining this season. I think JC's and Victor's dad is in the hospital in the finale as well.

So yeah I'm imagining something like this... Then again, I thought that Ana and Mariana weren't gonna mention whatever happened in the first season maybe until 202 or 203, but it literally happened after like 10 minutes lmao, so yeah I'm probably way off. But anyways it's fun to speculate :D

Listen, I just want more fugitive Doctor <3 Always. This promise of hers was so, so sweet <3

Generally, that whole scene was a TREAT. I nearly screamed when she walked into the room (okay, maybe that was the moment that made me happiest, actually) and then her roasting the Master was *chef's kiss* (btw I am very sure that the fugitive Doctor does not know the Master and simply drew from the rest of the hologram's information to pick on him <3). And then we get 2s of Yaz x fugitive Doctor interaction?!

Amazing scene, loved every second of it.

11. my favorite relationship they have with another character

Hm, that's difficult. I do love Gat x fugitive a lot. I like to think of them having been very close while working for the Division - seldomly of the same opinion, but with huge mutual respect and trust. I imagine they liked to rile each other up with their contrasting views and enjoy the bickering, but have each other's backs when it counted.

And then, as we know, the Doctor and Lee left Gat behind - which in this case I am convinced was deliberate (Karvanista being left behind was an accident, I believe, at least on the Doctor's part). I think it was a difficult decision for the Doctor but in the end she decided, Gat would not be okay with the disappearing act enough for it to work with her involved.

And then Gat is hunting the Doctor. And the Doctor kills her (or does she?) because she has to. Because there are two versions of herself she has to keep safe and Gat killed Lee and she is cornered and she has to. And then she spends her time on the run mourning all of her friends.

Like, there is so much tragedy in that relationship that we can fathom even though we only saw the broken remnants of it.

(This is a little contradicted by Origins btw, where it is implied Gat doesn't think highly of the Doctor, but I like to imagine one of Vinder and Yaz was Gat in that scene in Once, Upon Time.)

And I feel like I also need to mention Taslo, because contrarily to Gat, we do see a lot of their relationship developing. And A) I love mentor/mentee relationships and B) the fugitive Doctor is like the perfect incarnation to have an apprentice??? (she's so much like 12 in vibes, she needs her own Bill Potts) (Also Taslo is a tiny bit Mels!coded so, yeah...) Just, like, look at this:

teaching her valuable life lessons <3

while being slightly condescending <3 (look at her smug face <33)

the GRAB (Ma'am, what are you doing?? are you going to walk her out there backwards?)

and then the development!!! the handholding!! the softness!! looking out for her mentee!! look at them 😍😍😍 (also the division trauma TM)

The above two panels are the best thing ever. Together with the weeping angel they are totally worth the comic alone. And the rest is amazing too btw 🥰

12. what i like about the way the fandom portrays them

Hm. I like that we as a fandom generally have a lot of love for the fugitive Doctor and look up to her. I have rarely seen anyone portray her as anything other than the (slightly morally ambiguous, perhaps) hero, the badass, the one who calls the shots. I also do like that we seem to agree on her glasses being perfection <3

I actually also enjoy that people keep mentioning her in the same breath as the war doctor. But I like him a lot and they have some similarities (beyond being the 'extra Doctors'). Also when people do that it tends to be opposed to those who forget about both, so -

15. what i dont like about the way canon portrayed them

Maybe the fact that she killed Gat? But like, that's because I believe there would be a lot more potential for stories if Gat and/or Lee were still alive. (also I want her not to have lost all her friends but, well, yeah-) I do believe the Doctor might be ready to kill her friend in a situation as extreme, like I explained above. So, like, the portrayal is fine, the decision simply does not please me.

Also, generally, we don't see enough of her. But it's the 13th Doctor's show, so that's fine? Like, I want to see her grieve her friends and meet Karvanista again and fight with Tecteun and talk to the fam and explain why her TARDIS looks like that and that it's the same ship... but I get why there's no time for that.

AND I DON'T LIKE THIS:

Like, great that she's there. (She better be if you put dt twice but anyway.) But HOW. Jo is TALLER than Jodie. And you couldn't like, put anyone else behind the arm? Or use a 13 who doesn't point the sonic? Why. Who did this? I just want to talk

Also - not actually canon but close enough - I hate that she is still The Doctor | Ruth Clayton on ao3. That's not what we call her! That's confusing, because Ruth is a different person! I love you so much ao3, but make two tags for them! - I actually wrote a request about that quite some time ago but nothing has come of it yet. Maybe I'll have to ask again.

Okay I'm here after reading all the hwa ffs in less than a month (talent ladies). So, I'm going to review it. Although, ik everyone already knows how perfect those ffs are but hey.

1. Bodygaurd

Accidentally tumbled upon this and I'm glad I did. I mean it's been so much time I've spent on Tumblr and then this shows like a miracle. So, OHMYGOD PARK SEONGHWA IN A SUIT AND GLASSES , READY TO SHOOT SOMEONE WHO COMES NEAR ME?!?! Perfect. The story was so well-planned and i like how even though y/n had grown up through so many hurdles she still was so cheerful and bubbly and not all emo and depressed. Ok i get if some fic writers do it in a few of their fic i get it, sometimes the mc has to have some issues BUT I'm tired of it. Really. I'm trying to escape this reality to somewhere where I can be someone i very much aspire to be and not to be depressed which I practically I am irl so ...yeah 😃. Oh and tears. I did tell u i cried and i was not joking.

2. Just friends

You knew ... you knew what you were doing when you wrote that and how much of an impact it would have on us. I can literally hear that one tiktok sound that goes "the hOe$ gonna love this..." AND I BET THATS WHAT WENT THROUGH YOUR HEAD. But let be real tho, this fic was everything. When the fashion world gets involved with love and Seonghwa?!?! Masterpiece. Shakespeare could never. Plus the clothes inspo?!? This was one of the fic i could actually visualise yk?

3. Rewrite the stars

These types of tropes are basically what I live for. Its like you know you have limited time, you can't fall in love, you mustn't but...oh well look at how the sun shines on his face as he gives his million dollar smile. I think it'd be fine to fall in love. Even if it's just for a few days. Maybe just for tonight.

4. The Duke and his general

Its a classic.

I thought.

But oh boy was i wrong. First of all the simplicity of the fic..and the classic trope but then you get to the plot and then boom! Its like i kind of have gotten used to the whole meet -> fall in love -> get heart broken -> finally together.

And honestly I'm glad I saw the fic after they'd already been written completely because lord knows what I would've done with the whole amount of curiosity after every part.

5. Mr and Mrs Park

Holy oompa loompas THIS!!! THIS IS WHAT WE CALL 'INSPIRATION'!! Ykw...i don't even have words. The last scene at the beach tho. Chills literal ✨chills✨. And the whole loop that starts from the 'A. You messed up' and it ended on the same line but obviously now it had a diff. Meaning. And ong I can never look at a person named 'nayoung' the same.

6. Khronos

No words.Just tears and trauma.

7. The trouble with hating you

Again, the trope was simple. And oh we have seen it in so many movies and dramas about this. BUT yet again you sprinkled it with your own touch. Idk how you do it but when I read your fic i actually transform into yn. I am the real yn when I'm so into reading those lines and talking to air that my family becomes concerned but do i care?...no. and that's what we need in a story! I really hated hwa here tho. HOW COULD YOU?? But hey, yn's got charms 😏

8. Lets not fall in love, again

This was so hurtful. Because, i did not know people getting divorced felt like that. See? That's how you elucidate the feelings. When you're single asf but you still feel the pain of getting seperated from a man who has no idea you exist. Yes. I also recently realised that you have kind of a lot going on. Which again! Intersting.

At first, i was so mad at hwa at the start of the fic i was like wth did I even do. Turns out....he just did it out of love 😭. So pure.

Basically you have the best ffs I have read so far. 🙌🙌

I’ve seen a few of these posts regarding “why does Harrow put glass in his shoes” for the past few days. So I’ve decided to come aboard this train and try to explain it. Let me get this straight - it actually was explained in the show, just indirectly.

Spoiler alert for those who haven’t watched the whole show, obviously. Tl;dr at the end of this post can also be found.

The glass in his shoes is a form of self-flagellation. It’s what he believes is his penance for his sins - mostly for enjoying the pain he inflicted on people during his time as the former Moon Knight (which he states directly in the end of Episode 3, when talking to Khonshu’s ushabti). He says:

“Can I tell you a secret? I enjoyed dealing out pain on your behalf.” Followed by this:

This is crucial - Harrow regrets everything he’s done in Khonshu’s name and considers himself tainted. Now, we already know what was the main sin, but what we didn’t know at this point was it’s exact importance to Arthur’s arc.

And then Episode 6 comes out and literally the first thing Ammit says to Harrow directly, after he tells her who he is, is that his scales lack balance. That’s actually interesting, because up to that point it could’ve been speculated that his scales were perfectly balanced somehow - since, well, he was alive and could judge others - which could mean that either whatever penance he was working on actually worked, or Ammit’s scales have some faulty judgment tactics and balance for those who share Ammit’s views, rather than those actually being considered “good people”.

But no, the very first thing Harrow hears is that he’s not balanced, combined with Ammit’s dissaproving expression. He gets tears in his eyes nearly straight away, and says: “I had hoped my penance might correct my imbalance but I see now that's impossible.”

Now, penance does not necessarily mean only the glass - it could refer to committing at least few, if not more (since we don’t know when exactly he acted as Khonshu’s avatar) years of his life to Ammit’s cause, judging hundreds, maybe even thousands of people. However, the glass is also important, because it inflicts direct pain, all the time. It may sound like not that big of a deal, but I dare you to try walk on broken glass, constantly pressed between your feet and the shoe, and do it daily for god knows how long. It hurts like hell, and respect to Harrow for not flinching and tearing up at every second he’s on screen, though I bet that’s how it must’ve looked like when he tried it for the first few days, if not weeks. If Marvel shows weren’t rated PG 14 in the opening scene we would see beaten up, scarred feet and then a blood trail everytime Harrow is on screen. tl;dr: That’s the purpose of the glass in his shoes - it’s his penance. His greatest sin was inflicting pain on others, so now he inflicts it on himself to atone. As it turns out in the end, it might’ve not been enough for the scales to balance for him, however.

Worker’s Comp Doesn't Cover Everything

Word count: 555 Summary: Gideon’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day

Gideon was about a month into his first gig as an actual stuntman. He'd gotten jobs as an extra here and there, but he immediately took to doing stunts like a duck to water ("Nimble, like a beautiful little jockey" his agent liked to say). But something was off.

The long days on set were finally starting to wear him down. Everything hurt, he kept missing cues, maybe he was starting to get a cold too. Gideon just needed to push himself through his last scene of the day. Just one more scene. He was so focused on hyping himself up for the take that he had missed the director calling action. A thud reverberated through the set as Gideon took a roundhouse kick directly to the head. He still wasn’t sure what had happened as he was laid out.

“CUT CUT CUT” the boy heard through the ringing in his ears. From the ground, he saw his scene partner paralyzed with shock and the director and medics rushing to him. No broken bones or blood (thank god), but he did get his bell rung. "Kid, you're good for the day. I think it's a wrap for everyone." the director said from above him in an attempt to disperse the crowd that had formed around the poor kid. If he wasn’t as dazed, Gideon would’ve scoffed. He was not a kid. “I'm fine, really. I'm good for another take." The statement was immediately retracted when he stood and the ringing in his ears got so violent that he heaved into the nearest trash can. "No. No, you aren't. Go get checked out, try not to die, and talk to Linda in HR tomorrow about worker’s comp, okay?" Gideon was burning under the entire crew's pitiful stares. With a nod, he left to silently collect his belongings from the trailer and made his way back to his one-bedroom apartment. Alone. Just like every other day since he got here.

Gideon wanted his mom. The Gemstones could’ve afforded to hire nannies or au pairs when he was growing up, but Amber always took pride in caring for her boys. She attended every PTA meeting at her sons' private school, she had a cooler of capri suns and orange slices at every soccer game, and she’d immediately patch them up when they’d fall off their dirt bikes. She even went as far as to give her eldest son her shoebox of cash that she’d always kept tucked in the back of one of her massive closets “in case of emergency” when her husband could no longer look at their apostate son. In his concussed state, Gideon half-expected his mom to come in and nag him for not going to urgent care to get properly checked out.

He somehow made himself small in his closet-sized apartment, curled up in a ball on the floor of the bathroom, a white-knuckle grip on his phone. Gideon almost dialed her number when the screen went dim. He knew he’d put his foot in his mouth the night his parents disowned him. He wasn’t nearly as grown as he tried to convince them (and himself). Nineteen-year-old Gideon Elijah Gemstone was still a just kid and in that moment he needed his momma to tell him everything was going to be okay.

A/N: I finally finished after 6 months, but what a crazy 6 months it’s been!! My landlord sold my place, I moved to a whole different state, I fell down the stairs and broke my ankle while moving into my new place, I learned the truth about some big family secrets, and I dropped my phone in a sewer grate and had to get a new one. Anyway, sorry it is so short. My writing is rusty and I doubt I will be writing on the regular, but I still wanted to post this. It has been glaring at me in my drafts since March. It’s a bit funny. I started writing this as the finale of season 2 aired and now they’re filming season 3. The other day someone followed my main and liked all of my Gemstones posts so I knew that at least someone would still be interested. I still have a few other ideas I may work on but we’ll see if I finish them.

Regina was no stranger to grief–after all, she’d lost both of her parents as well as her first love–but nothing could have prepared her for the overwhelming, all consuming, oppressive grief of losing a child. Granted, Henry wasn’t dead. He was hopefully living a full and happy life with Emma in New York, and that was certainly some comfort, but still the grief of knowing there was no way of ever seeing him again was so crushing she felt like she could barely breathe.

It was the main reason she’d come back to her castle. She just wanted it all to end, and she knew exactly how to do that. Putting herself under a sleeping curse might be extreme, but hey. It was better than living out the next forty or fifty years with this overwhelming sadness.

“Make yourself useful,” she tossed over her shoulder to the man who had followed her like a stray puppy, or perhaps a guard dog.

Regina’s broken heart swooped at the remembrance of discovering Robin Hood following her. What was wrong with her? Why did she have this strong, overwhelming reaction to him everytime he showed up? Yes, he was handsome, but she’d had dealings with plenty of handsome men through the years. What was it about this bandit that affected her so? She didn’t need this distraction.

And so, she’d resorted to her default when she felt flat footed–sarcasm and snark.

She did her best to ignore him as she went about gathering the supplies she needed for the curse.

She should have known he would make that impossible.

“What is that?” he asked, suspiciously eyeing the bottles she’d amassed.

“Nothing that concerns you,” she said dismissively.

He pulled an arrow at her, actually pulled an arrow. “I won’t ask you again. What is that?”

Regina’s anger flared–anger at him, anger at herself, anger at Pan, anger at the witch who’d stolen her castle, anger at the whole damn world and everyone in it. She raised her hand and choked him. “How dare you threaten me in my own castle!”

He struggled against her hold, but the defiance never left his eyes. “Even if you choke the life out of me,” he gasped, “this arrow will still leave my bow, and trust me, I never miss. Now what manner of dark potion are you making?”

In an instant the anger drained from her, leaving nothing but the emptiness–and something feeling almost like shame. Why did it bother her so much that this man jumped to the worst conclusions about her motives?

It was something that didn’t bear contemplation. She was so tired, so heartsick, she just wanted it to be over. She let him go. “A sleeping curse.”

“The kind you used on Snow White?” he asked.

“That spell came from Maleficent,” she answered, mixing ingredients. “I finally learned how to make one of my own.”

“A spell? This is why you wanted to come to the castle?” he asked. “That was your plan? To use it on the witch?”

“The witch?” Regina asked in surprise. Truthfully, the idea had never occurred to her. “I don’t care about her.”

“Then who do you plan to use it on?”

Regina stopped for a second, letting the pain, the heartbreak, wash over her once again. She closed her eyes for a moment, wishing things were different, wishing, in a rare moment of brutal self reflection, that she’d been different. “Don’t worry. No one you’ll miss. No one anyone will miss.”

“This is about your son, isn’t it?” he asked, his voice tender, understanding. “I can’t let you do this.”

And she couldn’t let him stop her. With a lazy wave of her hand, she stuck his feet to the floor. “Then it’s a good thing you don’t have a say in the matter.”

He tried to dissuade her, speaking of his own heartbreak, his own guilt at his wife’s death. He spoke to her of second chances and new reasons to care about life.

For a moment, a single moment, she almost wavered. Her traitorous heart leapt at the hope, the possibilities his words brought to her. What if…what if he was right? What if there was still a possibility of a…if not strictly happy, at least content…life for her?

But as soon as the hope sprung up, it dissipated. It was too late for her. Too late for hope. Hope was for the heroes, for those who still had their loved ones at their side. Her hope was gone, and she was never getting it back.

“This isn’t an end,” she said finally. “It’s an eternal middle. This curse can be broken by the only true love in my life and the only reason I would even want to wake–my son.”

“Regina, listen to me! This is a mistake!” He tried one last time.

“Don’t worry,” she said, resisting the allure of his voice, “I’ll keep my word. I’ll lower the protection spell so that Snow and Charming can be victorious, but then, then I go to sleep.”

"I Double Dare You" "Bois St. Jacques, Bastogne, January 3, 1945"

*This is for hbowardaily Bobweek2023 Heartbreaking Scene*

*Author's Note* Wild Bill actually said,

"Hey, Joe, I told ya I'd beat ya back to the states" as he was carried on a stretcher. Guarnere also said in the book written with Babe Heffron that he knew he had it in him to make it, saying,"They'll give me a wooden leg and I'll be fine." He also asked a nurse to cover his "skidonies" with her hands during surgery.

The incident on the airplane, the wheelchair races and the boardwalk antics with Joe Toye actually happened. The hospital in Maine really provided the seriously injured servicemen whatever they wanted. Guarnere's parents received the yellow postcard from the Army saying that he was recovering from a broken leg. I quoted the entire contents of the postcard.

I will have Wild Bill's account of this life changing incident in the chapter dealing with the filming of "The Turning Point." My depiction of Bill Guarnere is solely based on the actor's portrayal in the movie."

January 3, 1945 Bois St. Jacques, Bastogne

The men of Easy Company were doing their best to follow their orders to hold the line at all costs. German artillery fire was relentless and the ground shook with the impact of the shells fired by the enemy. During the artillery bombardments, the sergeants of Easy had to first ensure that their men were in fox holes before seeking cover for themselves.

Men were getting hit and screaming for medics. Not that many medics were in the immediate area, but Doc Roe was in the thick of the battle with his brothers in arms. Before Joe Toye had a chance to seek cover, a shell hit him, severing his leg from his body.

Toye tried to drag himself out of the line of fire, knowing that the German soldiers would fire at a man who was injured. He was saying, as he left a trail of blood in the snow,

"I've got to get up...I've got to get up." Bill was in a nearby foxhole. He paused to listen, telling the man beside him,

"That sounds like Joe. Wait here." Guarnere scrambled out of the foxhole and began to drag Toye to a safer location. Joe told him,

"You said you'd get back to the states before me."

"You ain't goin' anywhere, you're alright."

"I gotta get my helmet."

"Forget it!"

"I gotta get my helmet."

"Forget it, Joe!" Buzz Compton had told the men to stay in their foxholes due to the fact that the enemy would fire upon an injured man and anyone helping that man to safety.

Compton was anxiously watching Bill as he slowly moved Toye further into the woods. He shouted,

"Hurry up, Guarno, you're gonna get bombed!" Bill looked behind him as he continued to drag Joe back to safety.

"Come on, come on!" Then, a shell exploded over Joe and Bill, sending dirt, snow and shrapnel flying into the air. Buck saw a cloud of black soil obscuring the area his buddies occupied.

When the dirt and debris settled, Compton looked in horror at the crumpled, inert bodies of Toye and Guarnere on the ground. He held his rifle as his hand shook and stammered before shouting, "Mmm...Medic! Medic!" Buck had a glazed look in his eyes as his rifle fell to the ground. He removed his helmet and it also fell to the ground. ************************************************************************On the afternoon of January 6, 1945, Leigh finished rehearsing for an upcoming USO show. She returned to the dressing room to change into her everyday clothes.

Spencer quickly got back into her wine colored day dress and black sling back pumps. Before she could put on her coat, someone knocked on the door.

She opened it and was surprised to see Lewis Nixon. Leigh asked him to come in, wondering why he was in Paris. Nixon looked unusually somber. He wanted to be anywhere but where he was at the moment, but Winters dispatched him from Bastogne, insisting that Spencer should hear the news from someone she knew.

Leigh asked him,

"Nix, what's going on? What are you doing here?"

"There's no easy way to say this, Leigh. You need to sit down, I have something to tell you." The color drained from her face as she grabbed the edge of the dressing table and sank into the chair. Spencer struggled to find something coherent to say, finally asking in a very soft voice,

"It's about Bill, isn't it?" Her eyes searched Nixon's, looking for a shred of hope, but he was expressionless. Leigh's voice was breaking as she said,

"Please tell me he isn't..." Spencer couldn't finish the sentence. Nixon found another chair, pulling it up to sit beside her. Lewis could see the fear in her eyes and he put his hand on her shoulder.

"Leigh, Bill is alive, but he has been very seriously injured. Dick wanted me to tell you rather than send a stranger. Three days ago, we were under attack.

The krauts poured it on us with shelling. Joe Toye had just returned to duty. During a barrage of shelling, part of his right leg was blown off."

"Oh, dear God!"

"When there are casualties, the krauts double down on shelling and mortar fire when someone attempts to rescue an injured man. Buck was shouting for everyone to stay in their fox holes.

Lewis briefly relived the horrific scene, recalling the shells hitting the large pine trees, something the men called a "tree burst." Lethal shards of wood flew through the air as the ground shook with the impact of shells.

Dirt, snow and fragments of trees rained down on the men. Some of the paratroopers dragged frozen cadavers of enemy soldiers to provide protection from enemy ammunition as they took cover in their fox holes. Many years later, some of the men could still recall the sounds of bullets and shells striking the frozen bodies.

Other paratroopers used wood provided from the felled trees or they cut the trees to reinforce and cover their fox holes. Some men were fortunate enough to have some canvas or other material to cover the fox holes to keep some of the wind and snow from blowing in.

Lighting a fire in an attempt to keep warm was strictly forbidden because the enemy would see the light from the fire. This made easy targets of anyone close to the fire.

Nixon forced himself to stop reliving the hellish scene and he told Leigh,

"Bill must have heard Toye's voice. He ran out of his fox hole and began to drag Joe to safety. Buck kept screaming at him,

'Come on, come on!' but the krauts zeroed in on both of them. Bill got hit. Leigh, his right leg was very badly mangled. I wish there was a better way to say this. Based on what Doc Roe saw, for all practical purposes, Bill's leg is destroyed from his knee to his foot.

We had another casualty of sorts. Something in Buck was broken after Toye and Bill got hit. He dropped his helmet in the snow where he stood and eventually walked off of the line. Buck was taken to a field hospital and transferred after that, but I don't know where."

Leigh gave Nixon a blank stare as she processed what he told her. Spencer's brain was reeling with the shock of the information she was given. Tears began to flow down her face followed by deep, wracking sobbing that seemed to pour out of her soul.

Nixon wordlessly handed Spencer his handkerchief and held her as the gut wrenching sobbing continued.

"You know that Bill's tough. Let me tell you what he said to Toye. Right before he was taken away, he said,

'Joe, I told ya I'd beat ya back to the states.' I found out that Bill will arrive here tomorrow morning at the American Hospital." Leigh managed a weak grin when she heard about Guarnere's comment to Toye. The full impact of the message she received hit her full force and she replied with a tear choked voice,

"He saves Joe's life and this is what he got in return? I'd like to find the kraut bastard who did this and torture him before I kill him! Nix, how can Bill possibly survive this?"

"Leigh, he's already managed to survive three days of being outdoors on a cot in the makeshift field hospital. This is the first chance they had to get him to the American Hospital due to the krauts keeping the roads virtually closed. I'll take you to the hospital first thing tomorrow morning."

Spencer wiped the tears from her face and blew her nose on the donated handkerchief, placing it on a nearby table. She noticed that Lewis looked gaunt and pale.

"Are you ill?"

"No. The Army in its infinite lack of wisdom sent us to Bastogne during the worst winter in 30 years. They didn't give us adequate clothing, we didn't have enough ammo and the rations couldn't be delivered as planned.

The krauts also send planes with pilots who open fire on us after American planes drop our rations. When we try to retrieve the containers, they strafe us with bullets." She looked horrified.

"What the hell is wrong with the Army? It's inexcusable that they would send men into combat without warm clothing, food and ammunition!

Starving men can't be expected to hold the line at all costs. Bill's already weakened by starvation. How the hell can he possibly survive?"

"Medics in the field hospital have been giving him food and treatment to stabilize him. If anyone can survive something like this besides Toye, it's Bill.

I spoke with a USO official and you can take off as much time as you need. The official told me that you will have money provided for all of your living expenses. This is thanks to the Andrews Sisters.

Before they left for the states, they donated most of their earnings to establish funding for USO performers. This covers any woman who has a seriously injured husband or fiance and is unable to work. You are the first person in need this year, so you're getting a share of that money."

"Thanks for speaking with the officials, Nix, I appreciate it."

"Do you need a ride to your hotel?"

"Thanks, but it isn't necessary. I live in a small apartment. It's cheaper than the hotel, so the officials are allowing me to live there."

"Then let me give you a ride to your apartment. Leigh, you've just had a bad shock and I'd frankly feel better if you would come to the hotel where I'm staying.

I took the liberty of getting a room for you that's next to my room. Before you say anything, consider this. Bill would want someone to look after you."

Spencer knew Lewis was right, Guarnere would insist upon someone helping her in this frightening and emotionally wrenching situation. More than anything, she wanted to be in his arms, having him reassuring her that everything would be fine.

Leigh realized that she had to be strong for Bill and put her emotions aside. He would need all the support and love that she could give.

"Do you have your flask?" Lewis got the flask, handing it to her and Leigh took a few big swallows of the whiskey. In her current emotional state, Spencer didn't react to the impact of the liquor hitting her empty stomach. She thanked him and returned the flask.

"Once I get you to the hospital and you get to see Bill, I'm going back. Dick insisted that I accompany you. He gave me the names of people to contact to facilitate your getting to see Bill. Nixon helped Leigh put on her coat. She left it unbuttoned and started to walk out of her dressing room. Lewis grabbed her purse and carried it with him.

They exited the theater and walked out of the stage door entrance and down a narrow alley before turning right and arriving at the front of the theater. An Army truck with its engine idling waited by the curb

Lewis opened the door for Spencer and she got in, sitting by the driver. Leigh gave her address to the driver and showed him the fastest way to reach the apartment building. While the men waited, she quickly threw some clothing, clean underwear, shampoo, a nightgown, a bathrobe, slippers and stockings into her suitcase.

She exited the building and got back into the Army truck. On the way to the hotel, all she could think about was how Bill could possibly survive physically and emotionally. Leigh then reflected back to their engagement in November. She thought,

"Our dreams were about to come true. Is it all over?" Spencer issued a silent prayer for Guarnere. She fought hard to not break down, but she began to cry. Nixon put his arm around her and gave Leigh another handkerchief. He held her until she composed herself.

Checking into the hotel and getting the key to her room went by in a blur of activity. Once Leigh's belongings were secured in her room, Lewis told her,

"If you need anything, that includes someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on, I'm next door. Have you had anything to eat?" Spencer said that she hadn't eaten since breakfast.

"Let me order something light from room service. I'm getting a good, stiff drink for you, too, Leigh. It might help you get some rest. We have to be at the hospital no later than 0600."

"Thanks for everything. I appreciate you looking out for me." Lewis went into his room and ordered an omelette, a croissant with jam and butter, hot tea plus some Courvoisier for Leigh. Spencer went into her room and hung her clothes in an armoire.

The food arrived and Leigh made herself eat, reasoning that she couldn't help Guarnere if she allowed herself to get run down. She drank the strong brandy, took a bath and put on her nightgown before brushing her teeth.

She notified room service that she had finished her food. An employee of the hotel removed the tray, the dishes and glasses.Before getting into bed, Leigh knelt by the bed and prayed for Bill. She went to sleep fairly quickly.

Early the next morning, she was dressed and waiting for Nixon. He showed up at 5:45 a.m. and escorted her to the army truck. Spencer wondered if Bill had arrived and if he had already had surgery on what remained of his right leg.

The driver of the truck pulled up to the front door. Lewis got out and helped Leigh exit the vehicle. He opened the door for Spencer and they entered the lobby area of the large hospital.

Nix went to the front desk and gave the receptionist Bill's name, plus the names of those who could help facilitate Spencer seeing him. Lewis spoke fluent French as he conversed with the woman.

When the receptionist learned that Leigh was the same woman who had been performing with the Andrews Sisters in Paris, this fact further facilitated Spencer being allowed to visit Bill.

When the receptionist asked for Guarnere's serial number, Leigh gave the number in French and had a conversation with the woman in fluent French, surprising Nixon. The receptionist got a clipboard with some papers and asked Spencer to follow her.

Leigh thanked Lewis for his help and for looking after her.

"Give Wild Bill my best," before he left the hospital. Spencer followed the receptionist into an elevator. The woman noticed Leigh's engagement ring, asking in English,

"You are the fiancee of Guarnere?"

"Yes." The elevator stopped on the fourth floor of the hospital. There were some open wards and some rooms that held two patients at a time.

"He is out of surgery and sleeping. Monsieur Guarnere is doing as well as can be expected. He had to have a great deal of shrapnel removed, also. The doctor is giving him medication for pain and some medication to prevent infection. We will need to get some weight on him again."

Leigh and the receptionist walked down a long hallway. The woman pointed to a door of a room,

"He is here." Leigh thanked her and entered the room. Bill was in the bed closest to the window. The other bed was empty. Spencer got a chair and pulled it up to the side of the bed.

Although she had seen Nixon and realized that the other men would look emaciated, seeing Guarnere looking extremely thin and pale brought tears to her eyes.

He didn't begin to resemble the tough, cocky, fun loving, strong young man with a swagger in his step that Leigh knew and loved. Nonetheless, she was profoundly thankful that Bill was alive and she issued a silent prayer thanking God for allowing him to survive surgery.

She would've been further surprised by Bill's appearance if a nurse hadn't shaved off his beard prior to the operation. Since the men were constantly outdoors in the bitter cold, a majority of the Easy Company soldiers stopped shaving.

They had no desire to shave using ice cold water. Dick Winters shaved every day, hoping to keep up the men's spirits, but the brutally cold weather was a strong deterrent.

Guarnere was still under the effects of anesthesia and was sleeping soundly. Spencer saw the outline of his left leg covered by a sheet and a blanket. She noticed that his right leg was removed above his knee. The tears flowed as Leigh imagined the agony Bill had experienced.

Nixon spared her the graphic description of the nightmarish sight of Toye's and Guarnere's seemingly lifeless bodies lying crumpled in the snow stained with their blood.

He thought it best to not tell Leigh how Guarnere's leg had shrapnel embedded in along with chunks of flesh and muscle blown away, revealing the bone beneath. Bill's right foot had been attached to his leg by a pulsating strip of muscle.

Spencer pulled herself together, trying desperately to dry her tears. Leigh was determined to stay by Bill's side. She removed her coat, draping it over the back of her chair before sitting down again.

Leigh dozed for awhile, awaking with a start. Guarnere was sleeping, but he was starting to move a bit. A half hour later, Leigh was feeling relieved when she noticed Bill opening his eyes. He stared at Spencer in disbelief. Guarnere said, in a soft, weak sounding voice,

"Baby, am I dreamin' or are ya really here wit' me?" Leigh gently kissed him.

"I'm here, Honey." She held his hand.

"How are you feeling? Do you need anything? Spencer noticed that his eyes looked slightly glazed and she wanted to ask a nurse if it was due to pain medication.

"I'm thirsty and I'm still kinda sleepy."

"I'll try to find a nurse and get some water for you. Bill, I'm so thankful that you're alive." He noticed Spencer's swollen eyes that were red from crying.

"Sweetheart, I can tell you've been gettin' upset worryin' about me. l'll make it, I got it in me."

"I believe you, Bill."

"Baby, I wish you would stay out o'here. These hospitals have horrible sights," Bill's voice trailed off a little, "like nightmares. Too much for ya to take." Spencer told him firmly,

"Bill, General Patton himself couldn't make me leave you by yourself in here." Guarnere felt dizzy and a little disoriented.

"Can I get some water?"

"Hang on, Honey and I'll see if you can have some water."

She left Bill's room and walked down the corridor, looking for a nurse or a nurse's aid. Spencer noticed a nurse who was sitting at a desk. Leigh asked her in French if she could get some water for Bill and if his glazed eyes were the result of medication.

Spencer was informed that he should not drink the entire glass of water at once. There was a risk of him becoming nauseated by the anesthesia that would still be in his system, albeit in small amounts. Then, the nurse said that the glazed look in Guarnere's eyes was due to the medication given for pain. She told Leigh, in English,

"I will send someone right away to make sure your young man has a working catheter and that it doesn't cause additional discomfort."

"Would it be OK if I cooked for Bill and brought the food for him?" The nurse approved of the idea, saying that the food could be brought in the following day. Guarnere had to stay on a mostly bland diet for the remainder of the day due to the anesthesia remaining in his system.

Leigh thanked the nurse and took the tray with the water and the glass back to Bill. When she brought in the tray and put it on a table by the bed, Guarnere told her,

"Thanks, Honey." Spencer poured a glass of water, handing it to Bill.

"I can only give you one glass of water per hour and you're not supposed to drink it all at once. The nurse wants you to take it easy on the water because you could get very sick due to amount of anesthesia that's still in your body.

Another nurse is coming by soon to check on your catheter and make sure that you're not having discomfort from it. Starting tomorrow, I'll be allowed to cook and bring in food for you."

Guarnere gratefully took the glass of water, drinking half of it, handing the glass back to Leigh.

"Thanks, Baby. Lookin' forward to the home cooked food."

An older nurse entered the room, saying that she was going to check Bill's catheter. She asked Leigh to leave the room and Spencer complied.The nurse found no infection present and no mechanical problems with the catheter. Leigh returned to the room.

"Do you need anything?"

"No, I don't need anythin'. I'm gonna take a nap." Spencer kissed him.

"Get some rest, Honey. I'll be right here." Before dozing off, Guarnere told her,

"I love you."

"I love you, too." Leigh kissed the top of his head. She returned to the chair she had by the side of his bed.

The pain medication and the lingering anesthesia caused him to sleep for most of the day. Bill awoke in the early evening feeling hungry. He was grateful to have any type of food after nearly starving in Bois Jacques. Leigh offered to feed Bill the soup and bland food that the nurse brought in.

"Thanks, Baby, I can do it." Another dose of pain medication was given after Guarnere finished eating. Bill kept the food down, but he was restless.

Leigh knew that Bill was accustomed to smoking a cigarette after supper. She told him that she needed to speak with a nurse and that she would be back soon. Spencer searched the fourth floor until she found a nurses' station.

She asked the nurse on duty if Bill would be allowed to smoke. Then, Leigh asked where she could find a vending machine where she could purchase a pack of cigarettes.

The kind nurse took a full pack of cigarettes and a lighter from her purse, giving the items to Spencer. She also provided an ashtray. The nurse told her,

"Normally, I smoke French cigarettes, but these American cigarettes are all I could find. It is the least I can do for your fiance since he was fighting the enemy."

Leigh thanked the nurse for her kindness and generosity. She went back to Bill's room. As soon as Guarnere spotted the ashtray, he smiled. Leigh told him how she got the cigarettes.

"A full pack o' Lucky Strikes. Thanks, Honey. Will ya thank the nurse for me?" Leigh promised that she would thank the kind woman for him. She gave Bill the lighter.

"I ran outta the cigarettes you gave me. The guys ran out o' smokes an' I shared what I had wit' 'em." Guarnere opened the pack, got out a cigarette, put it in his mouth and lit it.

He took a long drag from the cigarette, exhaling the smoke slowly. Bill gradually seemed less restless, much to Leigh's delight. Spencer made a mental note to bring in more cigarettes the next day.

Leigh had to leave after she delivered the cigarettes to Bill. The hospital had very strict rules about visitors. Unless it was a situation in which a patient was near death, no visitors were permitted to stay overnight. Spencer kissed Bill before she left for the night.

"I'll be back tomorrow with some food and more cigarettes for you. Honey, I hope you can get a good night's sleep." Guarnere returned the kiss,

"Thanks for helpin' me an' bein' here for me, an' thanks for the smokes, too. Baby, who told ya about my leg?"

"It was Nix. Winters sent him to tell me. He arrived in an Army transport truck. Lewis got a room for me in the hotel that was next to his. He made sure that I had something to eat. Nix also said that you would insist upon someone looking out for me."

"He's a good man, an' he was right. I'm glad he done the right thing an' took care o' my angel." Bill kissed her. Leigh said that she would see him for lunch the next day and she left the room. Spencer saw the nurse who gave her the cigarettes and the lighter.

"My fiance wanted me to thank you for the cigarettes. If it isn't an imposition, would someone make sure he doesn't go to sleep with a lit cigarette in his hand?" The nurse assured Spencer that she would ensure Bill's safety.

"It's obvious that you love him very much. Not all women can accept an injury like his. Your being here will help him remain mentally strong."

"I thank God that Bill is alive. He means the world to me and I love him as much as I did before he lost his leg" After Leigh left, Guarnere reflected on his rescue of Joe Toye. He thought,

"I'm goddamn lucky to be alive. Christ, it was almost a year to the day that Henry died. I didn't think I'd make it. If I didn't make it, who would tell Ma, Pop, my sisters an' Leigh? That would've broken their hearts an' my baby's heart.

It probably scared the hell out o' Leigh when Nix told her. I could see that she's done a lot o' cryin'. Thank God she's gonna be wit' me. Her bein' here makes me feel a little stronger already."

Bill felt exhausted and he soon drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep. Meanwhile, Leigh visited some markets in Paris to stock up on the necessary provisions for the meals she planned to cook for Bill. Spencer started to plan what she would fix the following day and the days after that.

She returned to her apartment and called her parents. They were saddened by the news that Bill lost his leg, but they were thankful that he was alive.

Leigh told her mother to not give Augusta the bad news over the telephone. She said that another worker for Colonel Sink with whom she had spoken promised that the Army would take care of notifying Bill's family.

Louise Spencer told her daughter that both she and Leigh's father would pray for Guarnere's recovery. She also promised that they would light candles for Bill. When Mrs. Spencer asked Leigh how she was holding up, Spencer told her mother,

"Mom, it's been a horrible experience, but that's nothing compared to what Bill is going through. The nurses have approved a plan I have to cook two meals a day for Bill.

He is seriously underweight. All the Easy Company men nearly starved to death because the enemy prevented rations from getting to them.

Bill insists on eating what the hospital serves for breakfast. His mom sent several recipes for his favorite meals. The nurses agreed that he would be more likely to eat home cooking and that he could regain the weight he needs much sooner if he liked the food.

When one of the men from Easy Company told me about Bill, I couldn't stop crying. Mom, I was so afraid that he wouldn't survive the surgery.

The Andrews Sisters set up a fund for USO performers who are unable to perform due to their husbands or fiances being seriously injured.

Mom, you know how deeply I love Bill. He isn't out of the woods yet, as far as recovery and survival goes, but the fact that he's survived so far is very encouraging. I'm going to be here for him however long it takes."

Louise told her daughter that she understood and that she would trust that Leigh would take care of herself. She agreed to not tell Augusta the news and she trusted the Army to handle the situation.

After the call ended, Leigh ate supper, washed her hair, took a bath and went to bed. The next day brought a routine that was to become very familiar to Spencer. She cooked and delivered two meals a day for Bill. Leigh also ensured that he had cigarettes.

Another familiar routine began that day. Spencer would visit Notre Dame Cathedral to light candles for Bill and Joe Toye. Leigh had no idea where Joe was hospitalized. Guarnere made progress, albeit slowly. He had more surgery to remove shrapnel.

After staying in the Paris hospital for two weeks, Bill was transferred to another military hospital in London.Since Leigh learned the location of the next facility to treat Bill, she already had an apartment rented close to the hospital.

By that time, Colonel Sink gave her an honorary discharge from the WAACs after consulting their office in Iowa. The USO released Leigh from duty and she agreed to perform in at least one show when she returned to the United States.

The doctors in London did more work on the remainder of Bill's right leg and he had one final surgery to remove shrapnel. Spencer continued to visit Guarnere and she continued bring food and cigarettes.

Bill was gaining weight and he was beginning to look more like himself. His voice sounded stronger and he was taken off of morphine. Guarnere began to take another type of pain medication. This made him more like himself cognitively speaking due to the fact that he was mentally sharper and less lethargic.

Leigh was overjoyed and relieved when the doctors in the London hospital officially removed Bill from the critical list. She no longer had the fear that Guarnere would die from his injury.

Dick Winters forwarded a letter from Johnny Martin to the hospital in London. Bill enjoyed hearing from his friend. Martin was sent home due to medical reasons before Bill got injured in Bastogne.

Guarnere was stubborn about one thing. He refused to allow Leigh to empty the urinal or the bed pan. Bill firmly told her that the job was for nurses only. Spencer didn't argue with him, although she thought that Bill was getting a little carried away.

After three weeks in London, Guarnere was sent to a military hospital in Scotland. Leigh once again found an apartment fairly close to the hospital. She was thankful that the USO shipped her furniture, clothing and the rest of her belongings. Prior to having reconstructive surgery, the surgeons wanted to trim the bone on Bill's leg. This was the fifth procedure Guarnere had. He told Leigh the following story.

"The doctors numbed where they were workin', but I had to be awake for the surgery. They were almost done, an' they said they had to trim the bone on my leg.

I looked up an' I noticed a saw. I thought, 'Holy God, that looks like a saw used in a butcher's shop. The doctors laughed at me, but I asked this nurse if she would cover my skidonies. I didn't want somethin' that (he pronounced the word as 'dat') important gettin' cut off. The nurse put her hands over me while they finished the surgery."

"I've never heard that word before." She grinned, adding,

"If any woman puts her hands on your skidonies, it should be me. I'm very well acquainted with that part of you " Bill chuckled,

"That's the sassy angel I love. Honey, I can't thank ya enough for bein' there for me through all o' this. That's made me feel stronger mentally an' I think I'm doin' better physically 'cause I'm gettin' good food.

Baby, I know you've been worn out takin' care o' me. I know better than to ask ya to take it easy, 'cause ya won't listen. How 'bout we start plannin' our weddin'?" Leigh kissed him.

"That sounds like a wonderful idea, Honey. My Bill is back! It's nothing short of a miracle that you're acting like yourself again. Thank God you're stubborn and determined. I wouldn't want you any other way."

She whispered to him, "When you're ready, I'm more than eager to make love with you again. Baby, I love you so much!"

"I love you, too, Honey. I'm lookin' forward to makin' love wit' my sexy angel. As soon as I'm recovered enough, let's get married." Spencer hugged Bill and gave him a very passionate kiss.

Guarnere said goodbye to Leigh from the hospital in Scotland. He was booked on a flight for seriously wounded military men that was headed to a large military hospital in Maine.

The plane had to make an emergency landing in Gander, Newfoundland due to problems with one of the engines. Bill thought that the plane was going to crash, so he hopped on one leg, telling the nurse to give him a parachute.

When she told him to go back and lie down, Guarnere threatened to kick the door of the plane open and jump out. Fortunately, the engine began to work and Bill remained inside the plane.

Leigh sailed back to the United States on a Red Cross ship. She stayed at the YWCA in Philadelphia. Spencer soon found a home in South Philadelphia, not far from the Guarnere family's house. Thanks to Augusta Guarnere, she got a good deal on renting a row house for the price of an apartment.

The owner of the property was a cousin of Augusta's and since Spencer was engaged to Bill, he gave her a very generous discount. Colonel Sink had all of Leigh's possessions shipped to South Philadelphia and Army workers unpacked everything, putting all of the items into the appropriate rooms.

Once Bill arrived at the hospital in Maine, the workers went out of their way to get the men whatever they wanted to eat. They offered steak, French fries, hoagies (sub sandwiches), ice cream and oranges.

Guarnere told them that he was happy to be alive and that he didn't need anything. One day, he was listening to his favorite Andrews Sisters song, "Rum and Coca Cola." He asked for a rum and Coke. The nurse brought six drinks. Bill drank three rum and Cokes and poured the rest over his body.

Joseph and Augusta Guarnere got a yellow colored postcard from the Army with the following information:

Feb. 3, 1945

"I am pleased to inform you that on 25 January, 1945 your son, Sgt. William J. Guarnere 13113070 was making normal improvement. Diagnosis: Fracture of the right leg, condition not serious."

Very early one morning, Leigh was in New York City. She had taken a train from Pennsylvania to Grand Central Station. Spencer got there 15 minutes before the train to Maine was scheduled to arrive. Leigh was appearing with a small group of USO singers who were performing for the men in the hospital.

Spencer carried a garment bag containing her USO uniform and the T-strap shoes she wore for dancing. She also had her purse and a small container of pizzelles for Bill. As she stood, waiting for the train, she saw Lacey Davis approaching her.

Leigh was surprised to see that Davis was pregnant. She noticed the absence of an engagement or wedding ring on Lacey's left hand. At this point in time, being an unwed mother was scandalous. Davis told Leigh hello and Spencer answered her. Lacey immediately noticed Leigh's engagement ring.

"I see that the wedding is still on for the big time singing star and the paratrooper. I heard about the wedding on the radio. The little Songbird was flaunting her ring and her handsome fiance."

"Lacey, I have never said or done anything to warrant your mean spirited words. Is it jealousy? Are you still bitter about not being able to seduce Bill?

For the record, I flaunted absolutely nothing. The Andrews Sisters reported my engagement." Davis gave Leigh a disdainful look,

"I know they reported it, how could anyone miss hearing the news after they practically made a federal case out of it. I'm surprised they didn't contact the President and have the day of your engagement declared a national holiday.

Let me tell you something, Little Miss Perfect, I'm just as good as you when it comes to singing and dancing. Are you related to the Andrews Sisters? Is that why you were selected?" Leigh was beginning to feel angry. She told Davis,

"Not once did I ever say or even think that I was better than you. All three of us had equal chances for the gig with the Andrews Sisters. I knew nothing about the agent being in the audience until I got the gig. My former boss, Colonel Sink, told me that I got the job with the Andrews Sisters. No, I'm not related to them."

"That sounds like a good alibi. If you're not related to them, then I'd like to know who you were sleeping with to get that agent to select you. I went to see a guy who was in tight with that agent and he promised me that gig."

Spencer was still angry but she also pitied Davis. Leigh realized that Lacey was so desperate to sing with the top trio in the country that she fell for a promise made by a less than scrupulous man.

"I got that gig because the agent thought that I could dance in the style of the Andrews Sisters and he liked my voice. If you went as far as to try to seduce someone to get a gig, I feel sorry for you." Lacey glared at Leigh.

"Save your pity for somebody else. I'll be fine as soon as I have this baby and give it up for adoption. Don't you dare feel sorry for me!" Spencer was relieved to learn that the baby would be given up for adoption. Her pity for Davis disappeared when Lacey added,

"I'm guessing that the wedding is still on because you probably feel a sense of duty to stand by your fiance. I heard about what happened to his leg from Samantha Meeks. She said that you've been writing to her. Don't worry, I won't try to steal him away from you anymore. I don't find crippled and maimed men attractive." Leigh fought the urge to slap Davis's face.

Spencer knew that Lacey would go to anyone in the media to say that the Songbird of the 506th hit a mother-to-be. Leigh told her in no uncertain terms,

"You monstrous bitch! How dare you say such an ugly thing about Bill! He's a hero for saving his friend's life and he's damned lucky to be alive. I never worried about you stealing him away from me, because he was never interested in you. Bill told me what he said to you.

Unlike you, I don't see men as something to use for my benefit. I love Bill as much as I did before he lost his leg." Spencer heard an announcement stating that the 6 a.m. train to Maine was pulling into the station. Before the train stopped at the platform, she told Lacey,

"I'd tell you to go fuck yourself, but someone beat me to it." Davis gave Leigh a look of toxic hate as she boarded the train.

The men in the Army hospital in Maine enjoyed the USO show. Bill was making the transition from being bedridden to using crutches. He made sure everyone attending the show knew that his fiancee was "the best damned singer in the bunch." Guarnere was happy to get the pizzelles.

"Baby, I appreciate gettin' the cookies. You've taken good care o' me. The food they have here is great. Anythin' we want, they give it to us. They even have steak.

Sweetheart, why don't ya take a break from cookin'. Honest to God, the food here is really good. I hope I didn't upset ya. Everythin' you made for me was delicious."

"I'm not upset with you, Honey. I had a run in with Lacey Davis in Grand Central Station." Spencer didn't tell Bill about Davis's ugly remark about him.

When Bill asked her about the conversation, Leigh told him the truth, that Lacey accused her of sleeping with someone to get the gig with the Andrews Sisters. She also told Guarnere about Lacey being pregnant and her plan to give the baby up for adoption.

"That's a rotten thing for her to say about ya. That baby is better off bein' brought up by somebody else. I bet you told her off, Sweetheart!" Spencer told him what she told Lacey before boarding the train. Bill looked shocked for a moment and then he laughed loudly,

"That's my baby! I love the spark that makes ya feisty."

Leigh was at the Guarneres' house when his parents saw Bill on his first leave from the hospital. Augusta and Joseph cried. His sisters were too stunned to cry. They believed the information in the late arriving postcard from the Army stating that Bill had a broken leg.

Spencer immediately apologized to Joseph, Augusta and Bill's sisters. She said that she should have told them immediately instead of relying on the Army to inform them about Bill's injury.

After Mrs. Guarnere translated what Leigh said, she and Joseph told her that it wasn't her fault, because she had no idea that the Army was sending the wrong report about Bill. Guarnere's sisters agreed with their parents. Bill told them,

"They'll give me a wooden leg an' I'll be fine. I got it in me to deal wit' this." When he told of how Leigh was by his side from the time he entered the American Hospital in Paris until he left the hospital in Scotland and how she cooked for him every day, both of his parents and his sisters thanked her. Augusta told her,

"Sweetie, I'm so grateful you were there for Billy. Knowin' that you cooked for him every day so he could gain weight and get healthy again makes me love you even more.

Since you're gonna be part of the family soon, how about you call me somethin' other than Mrs. Guarnere? " Leigh thanked her, telling the Guarneres and their daughters,

"I took care of Bill because I love him. Is it OK if I call you Mama? You're like a second mother to me." Augusta was pleased with the name and she told Spencer that calling her "Mama" was fine. Joseph said something in Italian to his wife. Augusta translated the message for Leigh,

"Joseph would also like to have a less formal name from you."

"How about Pop? That's what Bill calls his father." After hearing the translation, Joseph told Leigh,

"That is good."

Bill was moved to another military hospital, Haddon Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. To his surprise, Joe Toye was in the same facility. They were virtually inseparable from that moment on. Both men were allowed a few weeks at home, then they went back to the hospital. This went on for one year.

One day, Leigh came to visit Bill and Joe. She made pizzelles for Guarnere and sugar cookies for Toye. They nearly ran her down as they raced each other up and down the hall in their wheelchairs.

Spencer wasn't angry, she was happy to see the two friends engaging in horseplay. Bill and Joe apologized and she accepted. While Guarnere was working on making the transition from using crutches to using the wooden leg, the wheelchair helped him move faster. He told Leigh,

"Baby, once I got this wheelchair, I felt like a million dollars. I said, 'get the hell outta my way!' Me an' Joe raised hell. We'd go up an' down the boardwalk up an' down ramps, shoutin'. We'd stop in bars, get drunk, go down the steps to the beach an' drop in the sand headfirst. Then, we'd get stuck in the sand.

We were havin' fun, everyone knew we were there, just home from the war. Complete strangers came up to talk to us." Spencer grinned and shook her head. She knew that Bill and Joe had to have an outlet and a way to let off some steam.

When Guarnere was home for a couple of weeks, he and Leigh spent a great deal of time together. They began to plan their wedding, setting the date for June 23. Invitations were printed and sent out after V-E Day.
