2, 9 and 11 for the end of year book asks? - @thereadingchallengechallenge
thank you @thereadingchallengechallenge! I've already answered all of these but am more than happy to expand on my previous answers :D
2. Did you reread anything? What?
yes! just for fun/new-book-in-series rereads aside, I really really appreciate that I decided to reread The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison. I was not super into it when I read it last year, but this was before Witness for the Dead was out and right when I was coming down from my Goblin Emperor high. They are very different books and just wasn't in the right headspace then, but I think I'd call it one of my top reads of the year now. may or may not have reread it at least three times
9. Did you get into any new genres?
it's not a "genre" per say, but I've also been delving into like, 90s-2000s YA/MG fantasy and am having a fantastic time!
11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
I'm going to skip right past "a while" and go straight back almost a century lol. I've really been enjoying the Lord Peter Wimsey mystery series by Dorothy L Sayers! Not everything has aged perfectly, but they've been a nice solid comfortable read when I need a break from all the SFF dramatics.

1, 11, 21 for the bookish asks? - @thereadingchallengechallenge
Thanks for the ask :)
1. do u prefer a standalone or a series?
If it introduces a new world, then I prefer a series. For instance, just one Shadowhunter novel would never suffice as we'd just get a scratch at the surface of Clary and the Shadowhunter world. But, giving us more books allowed us to properly see her and the world reach their true potential. This can also expand to period settings, too. It takes time to establish an unfamiliar world while also juggling a smooth transition of plot points and character growth.
11. the best book u have ever read?
The Martian by Andy Wier, definitely! It felt very creative with how it would alternate between journal logs and "standard" chapters. I also loved how it told a story with mainly one character driving the plot. Yes, there were others, but for a lot of the scenes, it was just Watney!
21. hardcovers or paperbacks?
I'm a klutz! I tend to drop my books, even when I'm doing my best to be careful. I bought a paperback copy of Dune not too long ago and dropped it on its spine. It's fine, but I feel a bit sad looking at the damaged spine. I try to stick with hardback for this reason.

Twenty Books Challenge
Hypothetically, you are only able to keep 20 of your books. Only one book per author/series. So what books are you keeping?
I was tagged by @theinquisitxor and @godzilla-reads - thank you for subjecting me to this torture. 😅
They're all favorites and some have lots of sentimental value (additional thoughts included below).
Little Women (I have several copies of this book, but I selected this lovely edition because it's part of the Puffin in Bloom series)
The Wee Free Men (representing Pratchett and gets me both Tiffany Aching and Granny Weatherwax - my favorite Pratchett leads)
The Hero and the Crown (representing Robin McKinley - and it would be impossible for me to pick a favorite McKinley - so I went with this one because it's one of my all-time favorite covers)
Carry On (one of my most-adored copies of one of my most-adored books - it's signed and dedicated with a Wham reference (!) - and is immensely re-readable)
The Naming (I could get lost in the world of Pellinor forever - it had me at talking horses and all of the descriptions of food)
Get a Life, Chloe Brown (representing Talia Hibbert, I could re-read it forever and feel so seen with the disability rep)
Red, White, & Royal Blue (One of the only books I've re-read multiple times and always puts me in the best mood)
In Other Lands (Original and fun, with characters that have stuck with me)
The Left Hand of Darkness (I have prettier copies, but this is the edition I read and annotated in high school)
Three Tragedies: Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear (Got this edition at a Scholastic book fair and used it in high school and college - it's annotated and falling apart, but holds lots of memories)
Lolita (Stunning prose and includes one of my all-time favorite quotes)
Demian (I read this book in high school with one of my best friends, and this is the edition that she gifted me, which includes a lovely note from her)
The English Patient (A wonderful friend got this gorgeous edition signed and dedicated for me)
Jane Eyre (Jane and Rochester live rent free in my soul forever, and I love the cover on this one)
The Time Traveler's Wife (This book was so formative and is why I want to time travel solely so I can attend concerts)
Possession (Worth keeping it for the epilogue alone, but also contains one of my favorite quotes)
Into Thin Air (Started my love affair with non-fiction)
The Wind in the Willows (A gorgeously illustrated edition)
Anne of Green Gables (I was tempted to pick The Blue Castle for my Montgomery representation, but had to stick with AOGG for Matthew Cuthbert, and this edition because it's part of the Puffin + Pantone series)
Black Beauty (I read it just a few year years ago, and it started my adult horse girl phase)
Tagging (no pressure, just fun!): @lizziethereader, @aliteraryprincess, @brightbeautifulthings, @freckles-and-books, @thereadingchallengechallenge, @literarymagpie, @mountainmaven, and anyone else that would like to do it!

a few NZ adult sff books!
for @thereadingchallengechallenge following an ask from a week or two ago
most of these authors also have other books that I love! I have mentioned specifically their books that are set here (or Aotearoa-inspired fantasy)
From A Shadow Grave by Andi Buchanan (alternate history fantasy based on a real life murder/wellington ghost story)
The Dawnhounds by Sasha Stronach (queer alchemical-biopunk dystopian fantasy)
No Man’s Land by AJ Fitzwater (queer historical fantasy about land girls in WWII)
The Stone Wētā by Octavia Cade (climate fiction novella about an underground network protecting science data in the future)
The Wind City by Rem Wigmore (urban fantasy set in Wellington)
How To Get A Girlfriend When You’re A Terrifying Monster by Marie Cardno (cute sapphic monster romance novella)
Kurangaituku by Whiti Hereaka (nonlinear myth retelling, this is definitely more in the direction of literary fiction tbh)
Butcherbird by Cassie Hart (supernatural horror/suspense, not quite sff enough for my tastes but might be of interest?)
Wake by Elizabeth Knox (similarly more horror/thriller than sff-y; she also has a fantasy called The Absolute Book that I haven’t read yet)
I already mentioned Na Viro by Gina Cole, but since I think it’s adult I’ll mention it again here! it’s a Pasifikafuturist sci-fi/fantasy

Disabled Artist needs housing help
Hey. I'm an enby person with several chronic illnesses. I work from home to support 3 people on my own. I usually (note: usually) barely make it to rent, but this month everything has seemed to come down at once and I'm going to be approx. $900 short. [Edit: As of 10/25 I will be $655 short] I can probably make up a 1-2 hundred of that in a few days, but it's not going to be enough.
This is especially terrifying because moving is highly traumatic to my partner. We've been evicted twice in the past 3 years (once for financial reasons, and the last was a shitty discriminatory management company) - and I don't think we'd make it through another, and I'm not even being hyperbolic. And paying late AT ALL means shitty companies won't renew our lease. I am seriously terrified. Not being able to have these few hundred will be literally life-destroying. I already live every day expecting a flare-up to put me in the hospital again, because that's what stress does to me, every time.
Can anyone help us out with mutual aid? Earlier today I donated $5 to an artist who has helped me, with the hope it can come back around. Anything is helpful. I'd even do a peer-to-peer loan if that's a thing.
Payment links:
Paypal | Venmo : Piichann | Shop: one two | Ko-fi
!! Please signal boost !!
I am just so tired of us all being forced to destroy our bodies, destroy our lives, just to live. And still not be able to pay for basic housing and food. I really want people to unite around mutual aid. Support each other. (And anyone is more than welcome to add their needs to this post) People shouldn't need to wade through paperwork and Telegram scammers to get help.
Society just doesn't need to be like this, and we should be able to change it. I think if everyone tried to, we really could. Unite together. I don't exactly know how we get there, but we should all be sick of this. I know I am. And I will, and do, give back when I can.
❤️❤️ Free Kitty Pic ❤️❤️

This month, I'm participating in Booklr Reads Australian, hosted by the lovely @thereadingchallengechallenge!
I have some pretty high goals for this month but my hope is to read my way through this stack. I've already started with Ellie Marney's The Killing Code and I'm loving it so far!
The books pictured here are also all sapphic in one way or another, to stick with my own goal of reading primarily sapphic stories this year.
Happy reading everyone!

Mid year book tag
@thereadingchallengechallenge tagged anyone with a B in their username so I guess that includes me 😂
1. Best book you’ve read so far : Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots - and I definitely recommend the audio if you can (some of the voices the narrator did reminded me of like cartoon villains and I loved it😂)
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far : Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo - I’ve read a few but this one’s still top of the list
3. New release you haven’t read yet but want to : The Isles of the Gods by Amie Kaufman - just ordered it too 😂
4. Most anticipated release for second half of the year : A curse for true love by Stephanie Garber - like I’ve already ordered 3 copies 😅
5. Biggest disappointment : Babel by R. F. Kuang - honestly I have many disappointments to choose from but this feels like the biggest 🤷‍♀️😓
6. Biggest surprise : How Lucky by Will Leitch - not what I was expecting, but that was probably my fault for not reading the description better 😂 (I was expecting mc to be a grouchy old man … and he’s only 26🤷‍♀️) very good book, audio was a lot of fun too 👍
7. Favorite New Author : Little Thieves by Margaret Owen - quickly ordered the sequel and am excited I already have some of their other books on my shelf (moving them closer to my top tbr 😂)
8. Newest Fictional Crush : The Chemistry of Love by Sariah Wilson - still looking for my Marco 😂
9. Newest Favorite Character : Court of the Undying Seasons by A. M. Strickland - Kashire was a LOT 😂
10. Book that made you cry : Vampires, Hearts, and Other Dead Things by Margie Fuston - wasn’t expecting it to but the end hit me hard 😭😭😭
11. A book that made you happy : Three Kisses, One Midnight by Roshani Chockshi - picking one that isn’t already mentioned and I was kind of surprised by , really cute
12. Favorite adaptation : actually haven’t been watching anything except Owl House lately 😅, i did see the Dungeons and Dragons movie (if that counts, though I’ve never read or played any D&D before) I do want to beg everyone to read my newest WEBTOON obsession Cursed Princess Club by LambCat (I fear we’re near the end though 😭)
13. Prettiest cover : Eternally Yours by Patrice Caldwell - it’s an anthology and it’s so pretty 😂
14. A book you need to read before the end of the year : Garden of the Cursed by Katy Rose Pool - another anticipated release that actually come out next week, I liked her there will come a darkness series and I hope I’ll love this one too 🤞
I’m tagging @themelodyofspring & anyone else who would like to share their mid year thoughts

#Booklr Reads Australian
A new adult, a thriller, a mystery, and a young adult walk into a room. What do they all have in common? They’re all Australian! This month I will be partaking in @thereadingchallengechallenge’s challenge to read more Australian books. Here’s my TBR:
Unnecessary Drama by Nina Kenwood
The Long Shadow by Anne Buist
Cedar Valley by Holly Throsby
A Waltz for Matilda by Jackie French
I tried to get a pretty good mix of genres and themes. I’d also like to invite anyone who sees this to join the challenge to read more Australian books in August! I will be in the middle of a move and starting my first semester of college this month, but I feel better starting with at least a TBR list in mind.
P.S. If you want to see my updates in real time, my StoryGraph is also cassiopedias!
