A snake, a wolf and a moth all three walked together through the field. The grass was tall. It was midnight. They sang under a full moon.
“Sister,” said the moth, “shan’t we go home? The moon is high, light enough for us to be seen,” the snake hushed the moth with a loud hiss.
“Quiet! Don’t ruin our fun. We shall not be discovr’d, and if we are we can beat them off,” the snake and the wolf continued to prance around the flowers. The moth hid herself beneath the tall grass and hoped she would not be found.

There was a loud pounding at your door, forcing you to look up from the table. You had been repairing a small stuffed bear, which had belonged to one of the children you were babysitting. Over the years you had collected many broken toys, repairing each one with care. The children usually refused to have them back, insisting you kept them as a gift. They all sat on the mantle above your fireplace.
The pounding sounded again.
“Just coming!” you called, setting down the stuffed bear and rushing to the door. Again there was a pounding just as you reached the door. You turned the lock and flung it open. A young girl stood on the porch. She had wavy auburn hair that grew well past her shoulders.
“Wellhello there, how can I help you?” the girl smiled at you, and held up a stuffed toy. It had a tear down the stomach, revealing all the bright white fuzz inside.
“My brother told me you could fix this for me,” the witch hat atop her head slid down to cover her face. She held the toy close to her chest and pushed the hat back up.
“I sure can,”you smiled as she handed the toy to you. It resembled a dog, but it had wings that looked like they had been sewed on. It also had six eyes, three on each side of the head, made of bright purple buttons. The most noticeable thing, however, were the large feathery antennae.
“Did you make this?” the girl nodded, rocking on her heels.
“Well, mostly all by myself, I made Max help me sew on the wings because mom says I'm not allowed to use the needle because I'm only eight.”
“Max? Are you Dani?” the girl nodded and gave you a toothy grin.
“Yup! How do you know who my brother is?”
“I used to babysit him,” you said, “you should hurry home, it’s going to get dark soon,” Dani laughed and skipped down the steps to the sidewalk.
“Don’t you know I'm not afraid of the dark anymore?” she called to you, “Not since halloween, i’m not afraid of anything anymore,” as she disappeared around the corner, you wondered what she had meant by that.

It had been fairly easy to fix the plush toy, a simple ladder stitch fixing the large tear. You had sewn it together with purple yarn to match the eyes, and restuffed it. You set it down on the counter making a mental note to get it back to Dani tomorrow.
There was a loud scratching at the back door, and you jumped up to see what it was. When you reached the sliding glass, you saw a black cat staring up at you from outside. This was only startling because of the freezing temperature. You opened the door to let the cat in, and it immediately ran to the front door. Chuckling, you went to let it out. It meowed and hissed, scratching at the door, only making you walk faster. When you went to open it, the cat scratched at your ankles.
“I know! I’m opening it!” you opened the door, and the cat sprinted out into the street, disappearing under the shadows.
Not long after at all, there was banging on the glass door, followed by a flash of green light. You sighed, rolling your eyes and trudging back to the sliding glass door. To your horror, three terrifyingly familiar witches stood behind it, shrouded in the midnight shadows.
You violently shook your head, sprinting up the stars and locking yourself in your room. Taking your phone out of your pocket, you fumbled with the buttons trying to call the cops. There was a banging on your bedroom door. You threw yourself into the closet and tried to be as quiet as possible.
The bedroom door creaked open. There was the clicking of heels against hardwood floor. You stood up and pushed yourself against the closet door, holding the doorknob still as it didn’t have a lock on it. You prayed you would be strong enough to hold it closed.
“Winnie-” there was a muffled whine from behind the door, cut off before the statement was finished.
“Shhh, quiet,” a second voice whispers. There's a soft knock on the closet door, making you jump. You brought your hand to your mouth, trying to slow your breathing.
“Come out, child,” the doorknob jiggled between your fingers, “doesn’t thou want to greet thine guests? Be a good host and come out of hiding,” the doorknob twisted roughly, and you were unable to hold the door shut any longer as you were pushed backwards into the dark closet. A hand grabbed your upper arm, and you were dragged outwards onto the hardwood floor.
“Winnie, ‘tis not a child-” Winnifred shushed her sister, glaring down at you.
“I can see that… she ran like a coward, just as a child would,” you huffed, looking around the room for an escape route. You caught a glance of a blonde rummaging through your drawers. You nearly shouted out at her to stop, before realizing it wasn’t a priority at the moment.
“State your name,” your eyes shot back up to Winnifred.
“I- uh…” finding your mind blank, you were unable to answer the simple question.
“Out with it!” startled, you found it in you to spit out your name. She grabbed your arm again and pulled you up onto your feet.
“Sisters! Come, we have a book to find,” both of her sisters followed close behind as you were dragged out of your home without a chance to protest.

Luckily, Winnifred’s intentions for you didn’t seem all that malicious. Of course she had threatened to kill you if you came between her and her work but other than that, she just dragged you round with her sisters while she seemingly chased a cat, looking for a book that was, as you had learned, very important to her. A couple times, Winnifred had shoved you off to one of her sisters while she got something done, but any other time she was constantly watching you. She seemed incredibly paranoid that something might go wrong.
You knew you shouldn’t have enjoyed the situation in the slightest, but for you it seemed quite leisurely. You hadn’t been tasked with anything, and of course you had no idea why Winnifred had even decided to take you along anyways, but overall you weren’t in any immediate danger. You heard your name called, and looked up to see Sarah waving and you with a dorky smile on her face. From what you had gathered, her sisters found it hard to find much use for her, so she was left with a lot of free time. Free time she used for pestering you. She pranced over to where you were sitting, by the window, and sat next to you.
“Wouldst thou like to play a game?” she looked at you with the most pathetic doe eyes you had ever seen.
“No thanks Sarah, i’d like to sit here in silence,” she pouted, laying across your lap.
“Please,” she whined, “I've finished all of my chores, and Winnie won’t let me help with anything important,” she smiled up at you, as if she already knew you would comply. You did of course. How could you say no to her? She honestly did seem bored, with her sisters doing the majority of the work.
“Fine. what did you have in mind?” she squealed, jumping up and dragging you out the front door and towards the trees.
“What are we doing out here?” you questioned, watching her as she excitedly bounced up and down.
“Winnie and Mary never want to play, so usually I would have to do it by myself, but would thou want to help me look for beetles?” she grinned hopefully.
You had always hated bugs.
“Sure..” but you supposed she was worth it. Giggling, she brought you to the bushes near the trees, explaining how different bugs lived in different areas, and teaching you exactly how to look for the ones you wanted. You weren't in the slightest interested in the preferred method of bug gathering, but you found myself listening regardless. Come to find out, she was looking for rhinoceros beetles, which you were quite familiar with, as one of the children you babysat would often find them in the backyard and show them to you. She caught your grimace when she mentioned them.
“What is the matter? Art thou scared of beetles? Wherefore would you be frightened of such a harmless creature?” At that moment, you felt something land on your shoulder. Sarah grinned and happily lifted her hands up, scooping it off of you.
“It’s big! Look,” she showed you her palms, where a large beetle with horns protruding from its head sat. you took a step back.
“Uh huh.. Uhm, nice,” you gave her a nervous smile. She ignored your attitude on the matter, and pulled a small glass jar from the pouch resting at her side. Carefully, she placed the beetle inside and screwed the lid, which had at least ten pin holes poked into it, tightly back on. Placing the jar back in the pouch, she continued to search the bushes for beetles.
“Sarah!” Winnifred yelled from inside the cabin, “Get in here!” Sarah pouted. Grabbing your hand, she dragged you back inside.
You were shoved into the corner where you sat before as Sarah was scolded by her sisters.
“We haven’t time for running amok Sarah-” Winnifred looked as if she regretted what she said as soon as the words left her mouth. Sarah giggled, wrapping her arms around Winnifred’s.
“...amok amok amok amok amok amok-” Winnifred ripped her arms away, interrupting Sarah’s antics.
“Stop! I have a chore for you, and it’s quite important, so listen please,” Sarah straightened her posture and smiled at Winnifred, who in turn sighed with an annoyed look on her face, “I need you to go find those dastardly children and bring them here, maybe look for book on you way,” she waved her hands, and Sarah grabbed yours to drag you back out the door.
Sarah dragged you along the pathway towards the more crowded parts of town. You were confused to say the least. Suppose it hadn’t really set in what the sisters main goal was. It was easy to ignore their habit of child-killing while you were sitting peacefully near the window and bug hunting with Sarah. The reality of it was, you were currently helping an infamous witch hunt down children, presumably to kill for her own youth.
What a predicament.
You tried to run. Looking towards the bustling and the lights of the neighborhood nearby, you sprinted in that direction as fast as you could. Almost immediately, you heard a high pitched squeal of frustration, and fast paced steps following close behind you.
“Why art thou running?” Sarah panted between breaths, “I thought we had become friends-“
“No!” You retorted, equally as breathless, “I’m not your friend! You’re fucking crazy, you just tried to take me with you to hunt kids!” You tried to lose her by changing directions, but she caught it quickly.
“Wherefore would that make you run away?” she had nearly caught up with you, and it took all of your remaining energy to push yourself faster.
“Because! Killing kids is wrong, Sarah!” you tripped over a tree root and fell face-first into the dirt. Sarah caught up quickly, grabbing your torso and pulling you upright.
“How else is one supposed to stay young and beautiful?”
You stared at her blankly.
“You’re not,” you pushed her off of you, taking the opportunity to run deeper into the forest, leading her away from any populated area. It was dark and you were cold. You didn’t know how you were going to get to safety. There was no way you would outrun Sarah, and you couldn’t get help because that would lead her to where all the children were.
You didn’t know what you were going to do.

You found yourself drawn to
A song.
Unfamiliar–
Yet beautiful
In the most
Sickening
Way
It led you deeper into the forest–
Angelic like voice
Whispering sweet promises–
That were never to be kept
A sweet forest song
