Today has been a day. Just a lot of hospital stress this week between my mom and my husband's surgeries and this is how it's coming out (they're both fine and are recovering well).
~~~
Dick finds Tim in a waiting room at Gotham General, slumped in a faded blue plastic chair that's seen better days. At some point during the day, his brother had been immaculately dressed for the office. But now, his blue pin-striped suit is wrinkled, his collar is unbuttoned, and his shirtsleeves have been rolled up. There was a tie somewhere as Dick knows Tim never leaves home without one on an office day, but it's anyone's guess as to where it currently is.
"Hey. I got here as fast as I could," he says, taking the open seat beside Tim. He did too, calling Wally as soon as he got the news from Barbara. "How's Jason?"
Tim opens his eyes, giving him a look that is more dead than alive. "Still critical."
Pain lances through Dick at the two words. He'd lost Jason once before and the guilt from being off world when his Little Wing needed him the most still ate at him in the darkest parts of his psyche. And now, here he is sitting with another brother he never thought he'd have, one who's been through so much trauma and loss of his own--and who is on the verge of possibly losing another loved one.
A car-pedestrian accident. The gall of something so normal and mundane having the potential to take out the Red Hood--or any of them for that matter--is enough to make Dick want to punch the taupe wall of this dreary waiting room.
To be honest, he's rather surprised none of the others are here yet. Well, expect Bruce. He's off world with the JL and...
Oh.
Oh.
"Do you think Bruce knows yet?"
Tim's shrug is so minute Dick might have missed it if he wasn't watching closely. "Can't say I care right now. He and Jay got into another of their big fights before he left. Said if Jay can't clean up his act, then don't bother coming back."
Dick winces and easily reads between the lines of what Tim isn't saying given their semi-public place. Even in Bludhaven, he'd heard about the execution-style murder of a known pedophile--and that it was the Red Hood who'd done it.
"He didn't do it, Dick," Tim whispers, catching his gaze as tears build in his eyes. "I was there. I know he didn't. But Bruce didn't listen to either of us, said I was covering for him because he's in my pants." Those last words are practically spat out. "I think this is the first time I've ever felt like I hate him. He just doesn't listen!"
That's a feeling Dick knows all too well. He also knows now why the others aren't here--that Barbara called him first because Tim doesn't need just comfort.
He needs his big brother.
Dick slides from the chair to kneel on the floor in front of Tim. "Now that is something I know a lot about." He takes Tim's hands and squeezes them firmly. "I'm not going to tell you it'll get better. I'm also not going to say you need to be the bigger person and forgive him. What I am going to tell you is that I believe you and that I believe in Jason."
Tim's breath hitches and he falls into Dick's open arms sobbing. Thank yous fall from his lips and into Dick's jacket. Tears fill his own eyes as he remembers another time where he didn't believe this little bird, his first Robin.
Time hasn't necessarily dulled the guilt, but it has given him perspective. He'd done what he thought best at the time and owned up to it when he'd been proven wrong--a trait not shared by their mentor and father-figure.
"We'll get through this together," Dick soothes, running a hand up and down Tim's back. "You, me, and everyone else. We're all here for you and we're all pulling for Jason."
As he speaks, he glances up and spots Alfred hurrying down the hall with Damian and Duke in tow. Both boys are still dressed in their school uniforms, so Alfred must have pulled them out early. Behind them are Cass and Steph, hands held tightly.
"We're all here," he repeats, nudging Tim's chin to make him look up. "And we're not going anywhere."
Bad For Business
A little modern AU chapter fic to cure what ails you. There's a coffee shop involved, but I'm more excited about Detective Sess. And Kags' new bestie Bankotsu!
Read it on Ao3, Dokuga, and FFnet!
Summary: After strange things start happening around her apartment, Kagome finds herself continuously running into the detective in charge of the case, his company easing the loneliness weighing on her shoulders. But their friendship evolves, she finds herself caught within the web of someone else who had his eyes on her--someone whose affection is much more sinister.
Sneak Peek
How Bankotsu had ended up serving coffee instead of time was beyond her, but she appreciated the compassion she seemed to stir in him. He'd lost his parents just as he'd finished high school, taking on the role of working man and caregiver to his younger brothers instead of accepting the kendo scholarship.
He ran a dojo on the side, or at least, he was trying to, but the café was a steady source of income, and since some of his siblings were still in school, paying the bills came first.
Kagome patted his hand, her smile forced and contrite. "The noise keeps my mind from wandering."
Bankotsu sighed. "Fine. But let me know if ya need an extra break. Jak doesn't like it when you get overworked." A genuine smile tugged at her lips. Jakotsu was the youngest, currently in his last year of primary school, but he'd taken an instant liking to Kagome, bringing her art from school or flowers from their garden.
She'd been worried his crush would end in tears, but Bankotsu had confided that the little boy was trying to set the two of them up instead. Kagome had stammered and tried to come up with an excuse, but he'd just waved her off. "Don't worry, Kags. You're not my type. Besides, I like ya too much to ruin what we've got here."
She'd been relieved, then curious, asking what he looked for in a partner, and he'd flashed her a mischievous grin before holding his hand above her head. "Someone taller."
She'd threatened to cut off his ponytail and use it to strangle him.
Last night I dreamed that Makima from Chainsaw Man was doing her chain thing to everyone, thus causing some kind of weird Third Impact weird-end-of-the-world scenario.
I woke up for a bit, and when I got back to sleep, I dreamed that my dad was dating or marrying Dizzy from Guilty Gear. There was something to do with a game which had Minecraftian modding support, like you could just edit data packs and whatnot, and this was apparently sufficient to add, like ... enemies or something. I don't really remember.
I might have woken up again, but then there was a whole thing with Marisa Kirisame and Mima. Marisa had a spell which would allow her to become an all-powerful god; however, it cost 100 MP to use, and Marisa's MP maxed out at 99. There was either a side effect, or a second spell which allowed you to bypass the MP requirement, but which caused you to be trapped for 100 years in a small chamber, alone and with no external communication. Even in the dream I knew that the boredom and isolation would pretty much fuck you up for good. Mima didn't want Marisa to do that.
It does make sense and also "if you’re raised with an angry man in your house, there will always be an angry man in your house. you will find him even when he is not there. and if one day you find that there is no angry man in your house— well, you will go find one and invite him in!" is about karolina novotney
STOPPP bc it's true like 😭 we're talking about a woman so good at pr and crisis management that the #1 woman hater in the world logan roy thinks she's good enough to keep her around.......she certainly could get an equal paying job elsewhere (and like a legacy media company definitely would NOT be paying people the appropriate salary anyway), so to me that does suggest she likes logan in some way!!! the old guard are very different but she's so othered from them like she's either a secret republican or...something draws her to it
thinking about how logan never used her for truly dirty work and only used hugo for that.....we only ever saw karolina doing work for serious people........oh she loved his validation
“You are, from what I’ve gathered so far, one of the most famous legends from where you came from”, Wen Kexing said with not an ounce of wonder in his voice, matter-of-factly. “I happen to have a tumultuous background, so to speak”, he winked quickly, “and also a husband who enjoys way too much sending me off to deal with the city’s matters, and I think he would be delighted if I showed him just what I found this time. What do you think about being my guest for sharing stories over food and wine, from one legend to another?"
Or, Wei Wuxian is far from home and meets a white haired beauty who wants a new friend.
-----
Hello! This crossover happened because I love all these characters so much and I wanted them to meet. Basically.
It’s complete, but there will be an explicit sequel coming up shortly with Lan Zhan as well!
Metamorphosis
Another Moonbow collab from me and @moon-ion! A little more angst in this one, so please heed the tags. But also lots of fluff and laughs to be had (with some steam along the way).
Read it on Ao3.
Summary: After being kicked out of his house, Kagome helps her best friend find a new job, landing one herself with his gorgeous, and completely off-limits, older brother.
Sneak Peek
The knock on her door was unexpected, more because of the late hour than the thought of Kagome refusing her guest.
"Hello, Inuyasha," she greeted warmly as she opened the door, then noted his pinched expression. "What happened?"
His cheeks were blotted red, and he raked a hand through his hair, avoiding her gaze. "He kicked me out."
"He what?" Kagome grit her teeth. "In the middle of the goddamn night, no less?" Inuyasha's father was tolerable on his best days and a tyrant on his worst. She'd never liked him.
Inuyasha huffed as he shrugged. "It's whatever." He looked so small, however, that he was practically curled in on himself.
She pulled him inside, offering to make coffee, and then tea when he refused.
"Sorry," he muttered after a moment. "I shouldn't have come—"
"Don't you dare say that!" She managed not to slam her mug down on the counter, sucking in a deep breath before clasping his hands in hers. "I meant it when I said my door is always open. You're safe here."
Inuyasha huffed as his ears twitched, but the faint flush gave him away.
"Tell me what happened," she cajoled softly, pushing aside her ire for the moment.
He leaned forward, bangs covering his eyes. "He found out... about me being bi. Started tearing through my room and breakin' shit. Not even Mom could calm him down."
"That's so stupid!" She could barely contain her rage. So what if he was drawn to both genders—and more so the male one? Inuyasha was still the strongest man she knew—it changed nothing, and she found herself hating his father more than she had before.
He was lucky it was late, or she'd have immediately stormed over there to give him a piece of her mind. As it was, the look on her friend's face stopped her, and she pulled him into a fierce hug. "We'll go get your stuff tomorrow, okay? You can sleep in my room until I talk to Mama about the spare futon she's got."
