Portfolio advice, from a lead who hires Concept Artists

(This was originally a twitter thread I wrote before the site self imolated, hense it's strange structure.) I wrote this after a weekend of portfolio reviews - 1. Like a maths exam, please please show your working. I want to see thumbs options, mid options and of course a final design.

2. Arrange your portfolio, I don't want to bounce about between subject matter and pipeline. Your portfolio's narrative should be as strong as your work... 3. Please make worlds that excite the viewer, make them want to go in and explore them, explain to them the interesting parts of the town, or the way the character's hat unfolds. How will this draw the viewer in? 4. As I've said before the majority of your project work is explanatory not mood, make sure your portfolio contains explanatory work. Explained here -

5. A lot of beautiful post apocolyptic paintings, , but 80% of realistic games and film, we just give the environment artists photo ref, they are capable artists in their own right. Different work in stylised where you do need to create rules for how things can be translated. 6. Production art contains call out sheets, material references and flat graphics. This doesn't have to be your final image, but it should support it.

7. Design characters on a swatch(es) of the environment they will be viewed in. Not on white. I make swatch backgrounds from screenshots, it avoids assumptions that damage readability. 8. Reverse of this, put people in your environments, show me the scale.

9. It's not a deal breaker for a review, but if you intend to get a job, please show me your work on a screen larger than a smartphone (print outs probably the cheapest option with the best battery life). 10. Please have your contact details clearly visible, and by that I mean email address, I will not pass your social media contact on, I cannot input your form into my tracking system. EMAIL ADDRESS emblazoned and bake it in, sometimes recruiters do funky stuff to pdfs

11. Your portfolio will never feel done, not to you anyway. You will have learnt from your latest pieces and want to apply it to older work. But we know art is a journey. Send your portfolio anyway. I've been in the industry 10+ years and my portfolio is still not 'finished'. 12. If you are applying to an environment centric Concept Art position then please vary your times of day! Golden hour is cool but show me some happy sunny days, looming overcast days, what about at night? Vary your weather too! Sunny snowy day? Rainy Spring day? Stormy night?

13. If you are applying for a character centric Concept Art role then please ensure your portfolio shows a variety of body types and ethnicities. 14. Designing characters for games? Please show back views and feet (!) Many potfolios contain only front views. This is a problem because:

You haven't shown you are considering the design from all angles.

In many games rear view is the main view.

Stop cropping feet.

15. If you are entry / graduating and looking at Portfolios to compare content and standard of yr own work too, look at hired grad/junior artists as opposed to seniors Seniors and leads often have old or personal work in their portfolio which isnt representative of the day job. 16a. Show clearly the intended use case for your Concept Art. Mention the game type in the description. Are these player character designs for a 3rd person adventure game? Then more back views please. Bonus points for diagetic ways of showing health / equipment / role etc.

16b. Are these designs for an FPS? Then really the player view of the gun needs to sell the player style/ choices, in an FPS your weapons are almost your character. Are these world designs? What's the view distance? For an RTS your shapes need to read from above & a distance. 16c. The lack of clarification means I am judging the design in isolation, which both harms the design (you might be considering the backview of a char as the main adventure character.) Or an NPC, their waist up expressions may be important for conveying exposition and mechanics.

16d. Concept art is not separate from gameplay, great concept art serves the game team before it is a good illustration.

17. Play games. A variety of games. Think about them. IMO to be a good concept artist you need to understand the common language & references used by your peers. Also understand the principles and common language your audience are used to. FPS design rules are v.diff from RTS.

18. There are many skills that are needed in concept art, please show them. For example: Graphic design - logos, liveries, typographic use etc. VFX concepts - Abilities, Ambience, motion concepts. Architectural knowledge - How buildings are built! & more but I'm out of space :O

Splatoon 3 Version 6.0 Patch Notes Breakdown

Been a little bit since I did one of these, but Nintendo released the Chill Season 2023 patch notes about three hour ago, and while in terms of balance changes this is one of the smallest patches ever, it's got a ton of quality-of-life changes, so let's dig in, shall we?

So let's start from the top. In terms of new content, this patch includes a new catalog, two new stages (Robo ROM-en and Bluefin Depot), two new Specials (Splattercolor Screen and Triple Splashdown), nine new weapons, two new multiplayer songs, the new King Salmonid Megalodontia, and eleven new Tableturf cards.

Additionally, you'll note that they're including a line about giving you one Sheldon License at the end of each season. This is actually really relevant to a change coming down in line, so tuck that in the back of your mind for later.

The balance changes are all buffs, but they're relatively minor, and only six Main weapons and one Special are seeing any changes this time around.

Starting off, .96 Gal is having its ink efficiency buffed by 8%. It currently gets 40 shots on a full ink tank, so I wager this increases that number by about 5-10, but it's 5 AM my time at time of writing and I am bad at math, so I don't know for sure.

Ranged Blaster's explosions get a 15% paint buff. Note that this applies only to the final explosion and not the trail, so it's not a straight 15% paint buff.

Dread Wringer gets a 10% ink efficiency buff, and since it currently has ten sloshes on a full tank, that increases that number to eleven.

And finally, for Main Weapon changes the Heavy Edit Splatling now paints more. Unlike the Ranged Blaster's paint buff this is a lot harder to gauge, but Heavy Edit's paint can be kind of spotty and inefficient, so this is undoubtedly a good thing for it.

After that, we've got only two points-for-Special changes.

Jet Squelcher and L-3 Nozzlenose both get some points shaved off their Specials, taking their Ink Vac and Crab Tank to 180p and 190p respectively. On one hand, I am biased and hate the Jet Squelcher, and I think this buff was completely unwarranted and unnecessary, but on the other hand I love the L-3 and want only good things in life for it, so they balance each other out, in my book.

And, for the final balance change of the entire patch, we've got a Reefslider buff, as it now makes you invulnerable during its startup 13 frames faster. The thing about this change is that like, it's a buff, and that is good, but the problem Reefslider has is not getting the Special off, it's that you very rarely survive the aftermath of using it, and this does nothing to solve that. With Triple Splashdown on the horizon I think things might be rough for this Special in the future.

And that's all of the balance changes! There being so few of them indicate two things to me: That Nintendo is overall happy with the the state of the game, and that they are wary of touching anything unless they have to. And one hand I get it, after all, competitive players are currently saying that there really isn't a meta at the moment, just picking weapons you're good at and playing well, and that's probably not an environment you want to shake up too much. But on the other hand, there are a lot of things like Line Marker, Undercover Brella, and Reefslider to name a few, that could really do with some sprucing up to help them keep up with the just the middle of the pack. I think raising the bottom bar a bit higher would be to everyone's benefit.

But we've got two Specials being added, so I suppose now's not the time to rock the boat too much. We'll see how things have shaken out come the mid-season patch in January.

But the balance changes are a very small part of these patch notes, and nowhere near the most interesting, so let's keep moving on.

Anarchy Series and X Battles are receiving a whole slew of changes, the most prominent of which are some new badge rewards for win streaks and attaining high X Rankings. Additionally, matchmaking in X Battles is being changed to more strictly separate people with high and low X Ranks, as well as allowing more team compositions. To cut a long story short, weapons have a set of internal values that the game uses during matchmaking to try and balance the team compositions. Matchmaking in high-power X Rank infamously takes a very long time, so I have to imagine that this change aims to speed things up by making the matchmaking more lenient on that front.

Salmon Run, in addition to the new King Salmonid, is getting some significant changes, starting with some changes to the Specials:

Kraken Royale and Triple Splashdown are being added to the pool of available Specials. Additionally, Mr. Grizz has finally agreed to always provide at least two workers on every team with a long-range Special to handle all the pesky Stingers and Flyfish. Be sure to thank your local union representative the next chance you get.

This change is particularly spicy. Your Salmon Run stage badges will now boost your starting difficulty on their respective stages, adding more incentive to play beyond the two superbonuses, as well as making the grind for future badges easier. This certainly gives me more motivation to go for those VP 400+ badges.

You'll now be able to tell what King Salmonid is present during each Shift, and the Salmometer will change to match it, as well. Can you believe they didn't change that when they added Horrorboros?

Also I am curious what this means for those Shifts where the King Salmonid was random. Will the Salmometer become a question mark? Are they not gonna do those anymore? We'll have to wait and see.

But this next change, is a big one, and it's for, what else, Big Run:

Big Run trophy requirements will now be set in advance, and no longer scale off top 50%, 20% and 5% player results.

I am in two minds about this change. On one hand, I always thought that people complaining about overfishers in Big Run were kind of petulant and entitled, especially when the rewards were as minor as locker decorations and badges. Maybe that's mean-spirited of me, but there was never a way for me to read it as anything but people demanding to be given the same reward as the people working the hardest without putting in the effort themselves.

But on the other hand, the 5% cutoff has been steadily rising as overall Big Run participation decreased, which is just a natural result of time passing and casual players falling off the game, nothing weird there, but this means that the top becomes more stacked, further disincentivizing casual players as getting even the bronze trophies becomes harder and harder for them. Giving the players much clearer and more achievable goals will likely serve to pull a lot of people back into Big Runs, and that is undoubtedly a good thing.

And hey, I said the rewards weren't worth getting upset over, and by that same metric, I don't think it's worth getting upset over more people getting them, either. All the better, if it makes more folks happy. And as for the people who do want to grind their hearts out, well:

There's still some recognition for that, too.

So that's the gist of the Salmon Run changes, so let's finish up with some miscellaneous changes.

Remember how I told you to keep that bonus Sheldon's License in mind for later?

Players who own every currently available weapon will now be able to trade extra licenses in for Shell-Out Tokens. In other words, that extra license serves as a failsafe so you don't lock yourself out of buying future weapons by spending all your licenses on gacha rolls.

The Splatfest Battle Pro queue is receiving the same matchmaking changes as X, presumably for much the same reasons.

And finally, the most important change of all:

Curious about the lc musical cast heights? No? Well here's a very questionable ranking of the CXS and LG actor from tol to avereg to shmol.

(I swear it was a joke, but then @sgdlr-asdfghjkl took it seriously, and then I took it even more seriously, and now here we are)

Disclaimer! I have no ill intent in making this ranking, all the actors are great. I was just presented with a challenge I can't deny. Also, once again reiterating that these are very QUESTIONABLE.

Take note that most of these were done before February 16, so it's mostly using information/clips prior to the new year's break.

So the first thing I did was made this bipartite graph to show which actors have been paired with who. (Ignore the color-coding, it was for an abandoned plan. Also, pre 16/02)

Cheng Xiaoshi actors on the left and Lu Guang actors on the right.

One thing you might notice, is that some actors have been paired with more actors than others. Such as SRB who have been paired with 4 LG actors, thus I will use him as my initial point of reference.

(If anyone asks, why not DGY with 5 pairs? That's only 56% of the CXS actors, meanwhile SRB got 80% of the LG actors. Also, I have a lot of easy to access SRB clips.)

Then I carefully overlay multiple screenshots of SRB with LG actors to rank them, adding both a DGY-DXC duo and a ZHB-DXC duo so I can finish ranking the LG actors.

Here's an example, comparison of WMH and DGY referenced to SRB.

Next is probably the most accurate and logical part. You know those old math puzzles where you go: A<B, and B<C, that means A<C? Yeah, I did that but with 14 variables (the actors) and 18 conditional statements (the pairings).

With these, I can roughly guess most of their ranking. Then I use more overlaying photos on top of another to complete and get the ranking you see up top.

That said, let me highlight some problems I faced.

I tried my best, but keep in mind camera angles, video quality, actors' postures, shoes/sole thickness, fluffy hair. This is why the overlaying method is unreliable and this ranking is questionable.

I considered using the photo wall (the one with the donghua shiguang scene, that separated the back and the front studio set) as a point of reference, but I can't determined how far away each actor stood from it.

So i mostly took reference from the final part of 'Guiding Light' where they stood in a line or when theyre standing on the table (rock paper scissors and that song's ending)

Contrary to what it might seem, I didn't use much effort doing this legit (Could've literally asked any Chinese fan for help finding their height but I didn't). So yeah another reminder. THIS IS QUESTIONABLE AND UNRELIABLE.

That said, WMH is apparently 188cm tall (lol he's so tall and cool, he intimidates me)

CMZ, WYF, and JYQ is a problem because they've only been paired with the shortest LGs and they're all taller than that LG. Without overlaying, literally could be anywhere from rank 11 up. Even then I only have 1 reference point, ZHB.

Thank god for 16/02/2024 (very fun, they mix well) performance between WYF and DGY.

CQ originally have this problem too but he performed with WYH on 17/02/2024 (very good perf, will be on my next list) so that helped a lot.

JXK too have only ever performed with GHX which means when I have to compare him to WMH and TCP, the shortest path is 3/4 long, which makes the overlaying even more unreliable.

So yeah, it was really unreliable compared to me ranking all the LG to SRB, who's shortest path is only 2 (3 for ZHB)

ZHB and DGY is really close in height, I have to compare both of them to both DXC and CMZ to find who's shorter.

DXC and WYH have the same problem too, so I watched a lot of their clips from multiple angles to find who's taller.

I can't believe you argued DXC is shmoler than SRB, even BZM is smoller.

That said; WYH, DXC, BZM, CMZ are all so close in height it could very much be interchangeable.

Same with WMH and JXK.

For the love of god, JYQ is a PROBLEM. There's barely any performances much less clips of him so it's hard to find one that fits my requirements (Which is a shame, I like his voice and he's cute. Thank god he post on weibo often). In the end, I have to eyeball it so feel free to question his ranking even more so than the others.

The top 4 (top 6 even) is really easy though, they really are just that tall and easy to rank.

There's a very clear, undeniable, drop in height between rank 3-5, JXK and GHX, as well as between rank 6-7, CQ and WYH.

I know there's a lot of CXS actors in the bottom half but I think if you average them, LG is still shorter bcs WMH is a frickin outlier and the others are average.

Anyway, that concludes this (I swear, I'm very sane) post.

Nerdie! What is new this week?

Welp, I passed my math class (yup - mid thirties in a math class 🤨 it was required). Thankfully it's the only one. I've got one more and then I can look forward to the next term. I think my orientee's last week is this week, I have more stickers to stick on people at work and I burned some candles.

Wrong Beach and a Speedo - Javier Gutierrez x Abigail (plus size OFC) I finally started my Javi G series! Is it fluffy like his hair? Yes. Will it stay that way? Mostly only because we gotta move the plot along. 80% fluff, 15% smut adjacent (subject to change, could be less) and 5% violence. Like very small. No worries. Unsure about how many parts, maybe 5-7?

We're not sure about those percentages, but they do add up to 100% so we'll see. You can't be mean to Javi G Nerdie! You can't!

New Season Pass Prices

I'm seeing a lot of misinfo going around about this. YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY 20 FOR EVERY SEASON PASS GOING FORWARD. And please don't spend anything like that on a whim! I will include a full math breakdown of how much you need to spend depending on what you want to buy.

Please don't spread the misinfo online. Telling people that they need to cash out 20 for every new season pass is a lie. When this lie is corrected and a more reasonable explanation is given, people will feel like the actual pricing is more reasonable and will not be inclined to complain. We WANT people to complain. We want people to tell Bungie that we want to be able to purchase the exact amount of silver needed. If people stop complaining, this will never happen. But complaining with lies will not get us anywhere because they are lies. Our chances of making this happen are slim to begin with, we don't want to push people away from trying. We also don't want people to spend the wrong (extra) amount for no reason.

The math

The latest TWAB states the following:

Season Pass: 1,000 Silver -> 1,200 Silver Season Pass + 10 Ranks Bundle: 2,000 Silver -> 2,200 Silver

The current price of 1000 silver is $10/€10 (gonna be using $ only for simplicity, but it applies to euro as well. This is obviously different in different currencies but the rate should be comparatively the same). The current cost of a season pass is 1000 silver.

Going forward (starting with Season of the Deep), the cost of a season will be 1200 silver. This amounts to $12. The problem is that there is no 1200 silver bundle. Silver is available in the following bundles for these prices (same on all platforms):

500 silver = $4.99 1000 silver (+100) = $9.99 2000 silver (+300) = $19.99 3000 silver (+500) = $29.99 5000 silver (+1000) = $49.99

Please read under if you want a full breakdown of best combinations and how to pair these bundles for your needs without having to spend too much on something you don't need:

In order to buy a single season going forward, the minimum (and recommended) thing to buy would be to grab the 500 bundle and the 1000 bundle which amounts to $15. The 1000 silver bundle will also give you extra 100 silver so with this purchase of $15 you will have 1600 silver.

You will spend 1200 on one season which will leave you with 400 silver. If you do not spend any of this silver, this means that in order to buy more seasons, you only have to pay $10 for the 1100 pack. This means that if you buy Season of the Deep for $15, you will only have to spend $10 (same as you do now) for season 22. Thats $25 for two seasons, an increase of only $5 from how it is right now. Don't let people convince you that you have to give $40 for two seasons.

The full example for this specific scenario (buys Deep, wants to buy the next two seasons):

-Season of the Deep only = 15$ (500+1100 silver). You now have 1600 silver and the season costs 1200.

leftover silver = 400

-If you decide you want season 22, you will need = $10 (1100 silver). You now have 1500 silver and the season costs 1200.

leftover silver = 300

-If you decide you also want season 23 (final season this year), you will need = $10 (1100 silver). You now have 1400 silver and the season costs 1200.

leftover silver = 200

This means that you have spent $35 on three seasons, which until now would've cost you $30 (increase of $5). You also have a leftover of 200 for the future which means that the future season you want to purchase will also only cost you $10. So a single purchase of $15 will reduce the cost to $10 for four seasons with leftovers before you have to spend another $15.

Is it worth getting the more expensive bundles ($29.99 and $49.99)? Let's check!

First and foremost, the biggest pack ($49.99 for 5000 silver+1000 extra) is not worth it. This will be enough for 4 seasons and a significant amount of extra silver, but if you know you will play all 4 seasons, you might as well just get the deluxe version of the game which is cheaper in the long run and also includes the dungeon key right away.

What about the $29.99? We figured out that for the next three seasons you only have to spend $35. Can you buy three seasons with the pack for $29.99? Let's see. This pack will give you 3000 raw silver + 500 extra. Each season is 1200 which means that 3 seasons are 3600 which means you will not have enough for 3 seasons if you buy the $29.99 pack. You would have to add another pack of 500 which means you'd essentially have to spend the same amount of money ($35), but would have a leftover of 400 silver total, instead of only 200 at the end of the year. If you want more leftover silver for less money, this might be worth it for you.

This might be worth it also if you already have leftover silver right now. If you have 100 or more silver in your account right now, you can grab the $29.99 pack and be able to buy the next three seasons. This also only applies if you KNOW that will be buying 3 new seasons in the future.

What about the $19.99 pack? This pack will give you 2000 silver + 300 extra. Same as the pack before, this will leave you 100 silver short for two seasons (you will have 2300, but you need 2400). That means, again, you would have to add 500 for $5, making the cost of two seasons $25 and with a leftover of 300. This is the same leftover that you would have if you spend $15 for Deep and add $10 for season 22, meaning that this option is exactly the same. You can buy Deep for $15 and add $10 for the next one ( = $25) or you can grab the bundle for $20 and add $5 to get the same value for two seasons with the same amount of leftover silver. This is worth it if you know that you will buy at least 2 seasons in the future.

A lot of this depends on you never spending your leftover silver. If you spend it or if you buy more silver packs during the season, the count might get off. What you have to know, in case you're spending, is to always leave a minimum of 100 silver in your account. That means that you can grab the $10 pack which gives a total of 1100 silver. With your 100 leftover, that's 1200 for the season.

I want to make something clear: if Bungie makes a silver bundle of 1200 for $12, then three seasons will cost $36 instead of $35 they do currently. Making a season pass bundle will actually increase the cost by $1. However, it's important to account for the psychological impact of leftover silver; having leftover silver makes people bound to the game. They don't want to leave an account that has unspent money on it and that makes people more likely to not just want to keep investing, but also to spend that leftover. And since that leftover is not really enough to buy much of anything, that pushes people to buy more packs. This is why this is a predatory practice in the first place. It's the illusion of having more options and getting extra leftovers, but in reality that just makes people spend more.

Not only that, but this is also obviously confusing and requires you to plan ahead and weigh your options all the time. It would be much better if there was just a way to get the season directly for the exact amount it actually costs = $12. With these math shenanigans, you will always have to spend a minimum of $15 for a season, which is $3 extra that you shouldn't have to spend, even if it gives you extra silver.

However, you never have to spend $20 for a single season. You could, and you could end up with a lot of extra silver, but if you want to buy another season, you would have to add a minimum of $5 to be able to buy it. Technically you can absolutely spend $20 for a season and use all of the extra silver on cosmetics, but that is NOT required. It's up to your personal spending interests and capabilities.

If you only want Season of the Deep, grab the 500+1100 bundles ($15). If you decide you want the other two seasons, you will only have to add $10 for them.

If you're sure you want at least 2 seasons, grab the 500+2300 bundle ($25). If you decide you want more, you will also only have to add $10 to any subsequent purchase and you will have slightly more leftovers.

The ultimate goal is to ask Bungie to allow us to purchase seasons directly for the exact price. We want to complain (civilly, of course. Do not yell at employees, they don't like this either) to make Bungie create a bundle for seasons only or simply allow us to purchase a season with money directly. The increase is not as drastic as some people make it out to be, but that doesn't mean it's not bad. With the current silver system, it's absolutely bad and relies on people not looking into it and not doing the math because it's a lot to work out and think about. We should be able to purchase a season for the exact amount the season costs ($12) instead of having to wrestle with math charts.

Players would not be so angry about it if we were treated with respect and not preyed upon by these practices. For most, $12 is not too bad and we can all understand that costs of everything are shooting up. These $12 pay for 3 months of content, which means that the monthly subscription for Destiny is, essentially, $4. This is less than any other online game and even other media services. Even if you buy the whole expansion with all seasons for $100 per year, that amounts to $8,3 monthly subscription for Destiny, still among the cheapest online services. Obviously, it depends on the person whether or not this is worth it.

But we definitely do not enjoy this half-assed increase which advertises as being $12 but it doesn't allow you to only spend $12; you have to spend a minimum of $15 and then we are being baited with extra silver leftovers. This should absolutely be something we're mad about as it is. We don't have to lie about it being $20 or double the current price. The misinfo will just make people more complacent. When they realise that it's not actually $20, they will think of the real price as reasonable and will no longer be mad about it. Don't do some marketing CEO's work for them and don't make people think they have to spend more than they do.

No matter what, we as players deserve to be able to buy the season for its real price which is $12. We will currently have to spend a minimum of $15, which is not as bad as $20, but it's still a bad precedent to set, especially when you pair it with this amount of work to figure out which combination of bundles is best for you.

I want to make that clear. Just because it's not $20, doesn't mean it's good. The situation isn't ideal as it is and we as players should absoultely ask Bungie to not treat us this way. Maybe the silver bundle prices can't be changed right now due to various possible issues with how their contracts work, but this is something I want to see changed in the future.

I've been doin skirt math

Or: how to seriously overthink a piece of cloth.

I have complained repeatedly about how the Venn diagram between goth fashion and fair trade/sustainable fashion mostly(1) being two circles which are not touching. But recently-ish I've gotten into sewing and I decided that I will finally take my destiny into my own hands.

I want to make a handkerchief skirt!

It's litcherally just two squares on top of each other with a round hole in it.

How hard could it be?

(1) = I'm sure there must be some, but they are few and far between. I am exaggerating for comedic effect.

Measuring!

I decide to make my skirt roughly 40-60 cm long, starting from my midriff, meaning the distance between the middle and the sides is 40 cm and from the middle to the corners is 60 cm.

2. Planning

I plan out my pieces on a 150 cm/150 cm square, feeling real clever for dividing the second square like that. The diagonal rectangles are for the opening of the skirt and the long rectangle on the side for the tying band. I even have space for pockets! Amazing!

It's only when I want to draw in where I'll put the pockets in, do I realize that, uh, there isn't any space for them.

Cause you see, if you make a square with a hole in the middle, that means there will be a hole in the middle to subtract from your ultimate skirt length!

Okay, back to the drawing board.

3. Measuring, again.

Alright! So I can fit it tightly on a 150 x 150 without the pockets and if I do some trickery with the opening, I miiiight get it all in - ah fuck, forgot about the tying band.

I could just do a 150 cm x 200 cm, but that would net me 50 euro just for the raw materials and a lot of leftovers.

I mean, I guess, but... yeesh.

4. Panels, maybe?

So I figure, hey, how about I try to take out some of the circumference and just sew it out of panels? Let's do a quick sketch on a paper towel and tape it together:

It doesn't save enough cloth to get us back to a 150 cm x 150 cm piece. Darn.

And then it hits me.

5. who needs a hole anyways?

If you think about it, the problem is the hole in the middle. But if you're putting on, say, a cloth with a slit as an opening, it would automatically become a round hole around your hip/midriff.

With a circle skirt, this would be a problem, since the resulting skirt would turn elliptical and crunch up weirdly.

... but a handkerchief-skirt already does that, kinda.

Hmm... not sure if it shakes out.

Pun aside: I'm not sure if I like this, since I can't quite tell if it'll look good when made of cotton instead of a literal handkerchief. It'll probably look symmetrical enough. I'll just have to use rectangles to keep the original measurements of 60 cm at the longest and 40 cm at the shortest.

I will however consult my mom about this, because I have learned that if there seems to be a really neat solution to a problem that no-one uses, that tends to mean there's a good reason not to use it.

... nevermind that I still can't get back to the 150 cm x 150 cm.

I might just have to die one of two deaths (pricey skirt or slightly less pricey shorter skirt *sigh*)

But in any case I feel I have learned a lot, so that's also valuable.

Been in a very visual novel/otome game/dating sim mood lately.

Started with Tears of Themis, got worse with this one Xiao x Lumine one on Itch.io, got even worse by some non Genshin related ones on the same site (Project Blue and Blooming Panic, eugh, I'm feeling sappy), and now I've been replaying one I got in 2015 I think

Too bad it's Amnesia:Memories.

I used to love the anime cuz, eugh, the character designs were so extra and I was like 16 and deep in the anime hole. Also Shin is so pretty and he's all black and red lol. I even made several Shin themes for my browser lol. These designs are so cursed btw. Thigh high boots, everything's ripped and the whole outfits probably take like hours to put on lol. Kinda cool but dumb.

I remember not being too happy with the game, though, and it took me until now to realize why.

Back then I only got 1 out of 5 good endings. Kent my beloved, no wonder I have fond memories of only him lol.

Going in again my main thoughts were "Shin's mean", "Toma's creepy and crazy", "Ikki's gross" and "don't care about Ukyo" buuuuuut

I still think Shin's mean, but now I kinda get it. He also softened in the good ending so I'll let it slide, but his constant boundary crossing makes him a bit iffy. And, unsurprisingly, I love his voice. Tetsuya Kakihara might always sound the same but eugh I love him anyway.

Toma freaks me out, can't trust him on any route. He literally puts MC in a dog cage cuz he's too overprotective. It's resolved in the good ending, but it's crazy enough for me to not be able to get over it. He's also a freak on Shin's route. Some might be into the yandere stuff but eh, not my thing.

I wanted to quickly get through Ikki's route before going for main man Kent, but turns out I actually really liked Ikki. Kinda worried that he might end up being my fav lol, I'm a sucker for the "playboy actually falls in love" stuff lol. Positively surprised.

Can't wait for Kent next time. I think he was a silly little math nerd who blushed a lot. Iirc he makes the player actually solve math problems lol. That's the way to my heart apparently xD Oh, I like his voice too, Akira Ishida. Not one of my favs but still.

Had to stop for tonight before starting Kent's route, and I finally unlocked Ukyo's, too. He seems like the meta guy (like Seven/707 in Mystic Messenger) and he pops in on every route talking about how "you probably don't remember me but be careful" and sometimes goes a bit crazy but I'm definitely interested to see how his good ending goes. Probably gonna end with me crying and wanting to hug him to make things better lol

Might even go for some of the bad and normal endings afterwards, who knows. Gonna ruin all the good vibes immediately xD

Anyway I don't think anyone's gonna read this but hey, it's there for those who might go through the game's tag soooo suffer!

Why the USA Gymnastic’s Men’s Program Bonus Isn’t Dumb even if Randos Think it Is...

Let’s start with a brutal reality.  At the Tokyo Olympics even if the US team had hit all their routines perfectly they would not have medaled because their intended difficulty score was not competitive with the top teams internationally.  Now “lower difficulty with clean execution” is a common tactic in gymnastics but the problem is that their level of execution wasn’t that much better than the teams above them that had higher difficulty.

So why are they lagging so far behind to the point where they are starting meets essentially 8 points behind the top teams?  The answer has to do with funding.  The US men’s team determines the national team at two meets, Winter Cup in February and the US National Championships in the summer.  But learning new skills takes longer than 6 months to get consistent.  If you were a US MAG you couldn’t afford to risk upgrading a skill to a higher difficulty because if you fell on it you might not be able to pay your rent for the next half a year.

Coming away from Tokyo it was decided to try and figure out a way to incentivize difficulty--and we’re not talking about asking people to do dangerous or bleeding edge skills, but the the international standard--while making it so they’re not in terror of losing their funding if they show something in August that isn’t quite consistent that they might have clean by Worlds in October.

The answer, after input from the athletes and coaches, is a difficulty bonus system.  And we’re talking BIG bonuses for trying higher difficult skills.  The scores that result look kind of goofy to people because if you are just tooning in you know that this or that athlete can’t possibly get a 16.something score if their D score is 5.something.  A lot of casual fans or fans of women’s gymnastics who only watch men’s at nationals and worlds or international fans who don’t like seeing “inferior” athletes getting the same scores as the best in the world because of a domestic bonus system have decided to have opinions on this.

The opinions range in quality:

1) This is just domestic overscoring.  Which I don’t think applies if you specifically know the bonus is there.  It’s not secret.  No one in this system thinks the bonus scores are reflective of international scores.  They may enjoy their 15′s at nationals but they know.  They aren’t going to be disappointed when they can’t get a 16 at worlds.

2) People will be selected for the worlds team based on these bonuses.  Yes, there are automatic spots for the top 2 at nationals but the national champion would still be the national champion with no bonuses.  And the man who came in second should be on a worlds team because he’s an event final medal contender that has been left off several teams.  Also the selection criteria for everyone but those automatic qualifiers explicitly excludes the bonus.

3) It’s unearned glory.  This comes in two flavors, how dare this man who will not medal at worlds get the same score as a foreign athlete who will.  Well... again the bonus is not hidden.  If people are comparing bonus scoring to non bonus scoring they’re dumb and that’s not on the US men’s program.  The second version of this was someone who thought national championship medals with the bonus were somehow fake, and that if you just let the standard code winners raise to the top that they’d do well internationally.  That a national champion would be competitive because he was a national champion.  But that hasn’t been true for basically the entire previous quad.

4) That it’s hard for fans to compare scores between competitions.  Grow up.  It’s not about you, it’s about someone’s career and their livelihoods.  Also USAG publishes the scores with the bonus so you just have to subtract.  Math is hard y’all.

5) The Sexism!  There is no difficulty bonus for the women’s program (in fact all the bonuses and penalties to encourage harder vaults were done away with this year as were bonuses for stuck landings).  It’s a terribly sexist thing that men are asked to risk their bodies while women are asked to do less difficulty out of concerns for their safety.  Okay this one is a mess.  It stems in part from the fact that the international federation’s women’s technical committee has specifically given lower values to skills they are concerned are too dangerous.  The US media and fans screamed about this because it happened with a beam dismount that Simone Biles did in 2019.  But notice that this was the international federation and the domestic bonus system is USAG.  These are not the same organizations.

Oh and the biggest reason this argument is dumb is that the US women do some of the highest difficulty in the world.  To the point where I as a fan would kind of like them to do a little less so they can clean things up.  They don’t need the incentives because they aren’t 5th ranked in the World and starting out 8 points in a hole.

So... I think all the arguments against this are dumb but is it working?  Well yes.  The number of routines with an internationally competitive D score has risen quite quickly and all the athletes in the system are universally praising the system and they are rather obvious less anxious after mistakes.  

The people in the system like it and it’s their paycheck and their careers.  Maybe ... just let them do their thing?
