i had so many thoughts about they/them (2022) and i really think i on't ever stop talking about this movie – not because it's particularly great, just because it is So Much (when i watched it with a friend we were taking breaks very very frequently) and i decided to write a paper about it!! before you read the paper, read this first:
i wrote this paper because i think people are misunderstanding this movie.
overall i do not think i recommend this movie as a horror movie because i do think you need to be informed that this movie has some pretty grisly elements (animal death, electroshock, some other psychological stuff) that you should definitely approach with caution but if you are looking for a deep emotional reaction this might be the place to find it? of course, its not going to be everyone's thing.
i think there are conversations and critiques that can only take place after you have seen this movie – the actual traditional horror plot is shoddy, and should be talked about as well because it is definitely not without flaw, but it is not the source of the horror in this movie
frankly, the body paragraphs in my paper could easily be expanded into their own papers, and i definitely shoehorned my thoughts about this movie a little – BUT, i strongly stand with everything i said.
please please read and tell me what you think!! i would really really love a larger conversation about this honestly i'm just really excited about my paper heehee

THEY/THEM (2022) dir. John Logan Several queer campers join Whistler, a gay conversion camp, for a week of programming intended to "help them find a new sense of freedom". As the camp's methods become increasingly more psychologically unsettling, the campers must work together to protect themselves. When an unidentified axe murderer starts claiming victims, things get even more dangerous. (link in title)

They/Them (2022)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
They/Them has lights flickering on in the middle of the night late into the first night the story takes place. This flicker lasts about 3 seconds. A late scene involving a projector in the dark uses rapidly-changing images that create a strong strobe effect for about 30 seconds. One of the last scenes is lit by police car strobe lights at night.
All of the camera work in this film is either stationary or very smooth.
Flashing Lights: 6/10. Motion Sickness: 1/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: This film takes place at a gay conversion camp, with extensive language depicting that mission as a positive. Graphic pictures of past abuses of this camp are shown in one scene, and two scenes depict shock aversion therapy. A trans person is aggressively misgendered. Real-world experiences of LGBT+ people are shared, including descriptions of hate crimes and slurs. Someone is forced to euthanize a dog with a gun while listening to homophobic abuse.

they/them said yes being unapologetically queer is good for your skin but that doesn’t mean you can forget to moisturize and they’re so right for that

Roz Whitlock (they/them) is a 36-year-old Unsouled who works as a Fisherman and looks a lot like Theo Germaine.
Biography
Like many Leoran children, Roz grew up happy—the kind that comes from security, safety, and the certainty of a society where people were cared for. It felt like a promise: they’d be part of this when they grew up, just like everyone around them.
Roz’s mana didn’t manifest when they were ten, but late bloomers weren’t uncommon. There was nothing wrong with waiting a little longer, as their parents were quick enough to reassure them. Nothing happened at fifteen either, so they waited more. Roz could be patient. Sixteen, seventeen, eighteen—the years continued to pass, but nothing changed. Their parents didn’t talk about late bloomers anymore.
Roz turned twenty and stopped waiting.
It would be uncharitable to say their family didn’t accept them. It would be more accurate to say that they didn’t embrace them. Didn’t know what to do with them, in the end. With a younger sibling who manifested his mana at age eight, and parents with the talent to match, Roz was simply there.
And yes, they were loved, but there was so much of their family’s life that Roz would never be able to understand. Once close with their brother, the wedge between them grew continuously as their brother’s life became more and more about the feats he could accomplish with his mana, and Roz’s life stayed the same.
The same was true with friends they’d made at school: Roz tired quickly, bruised easier, aged faster. They’d likely die before their peers. Everyone knew it, even if it seemed people felt the polite thing was to smile blandly at them and ignore Roz’s rising bitterness. Roz learned quickly that it made people around them uncomfortable to acknowledge any of it, no matter how obvious it was that they weren’t the same.
After growing up Unsouled, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Roz took to the outworlders faster than most. These new species brought fresh ideas, technology, and—most importantly—individuals who were just as strange within Leoran society as Roz had always felt.
Personality
Lonely children grow into quiet adults. Roz keeps to themself, finding more enjoyment in their job than in other people. It wasn’t necessarily one they would’ve chosen under other circumstances—they’d dreamed of engineering, once upon a time—but, like many on their planet, Roz holds a deep respect and fascination with the ocean.
Despite everything, they’re still a Leoran at heart: they want to be useful, in the ways that they can be. They can’t build new ships or explore the depths of the ocean, but they can bring back fish. They can feed their community, and when they’re done, they can slip back out to the sea to be left alone.
The arrival of the Collective, more than anything else, draws them back towards the shores. Here is the proof of what they’d felt all along, but didn’t have words for: it wasn’t them that was unsuited for society, but that this society wasn’t suited for people like Roz. The lack of mana cores clearly hadn’t stopped humans, Venpalans, and Beastkin from traversing the skies.
Despite the growing suspicion of the outworlders, Roz has no qualms about embracing the change. If anything, they hope for more. They’re hungry for stories of other worlds and other people, and even moreso for the chance to experience any of it—both the good and the bad that the outworlders might bring to their home.
Welcome home @rozwhitlock ! We're happy to have you in Sotiris.

W A T C H I N G
Semi-Controversial film. No doubt somewhat triggering for some people. Understandable.
But the underpinning allegory is intolerance and bigotry is the enemy.
Excellent inclusive casting (imo).
THEO GERMAINE is awesome, what a cute human being. Follow them on their socials. I think they have such a great heart. I hope they get many more roles!
AUSTIN CRUTE was already a favorite character actor on DAYBREAK. This is such a different side to his masculine Apocalyptic Samurai. Really - this guy has range!
KEVIN BACON, as always, is excellent. I mean has he ever been anything but? He's like Keanu. A good dude that has a fan favorite status.

Series finale: Work in Progress (created by Abby McEnany, Tim Mason, 2019-2021)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I keep hearing about and, what's worse, experiencing the sophomore slump syndrome of the TV shows I like (Russian Doll, most recently). Fortunately, it's not the case of this series, which, while getting less exciting, developed in a plausible way. Abby's emotional and mental-health growth is empathetic and relatable, leading to the last episode's closure that brings back season 1's key character, whose absence bothered me though it is likely the best creative decision of its follow-up. It's a pity there's going to be no more.
