#random thought of the day #books #fantasy #first one is one that's been annoying me for a while because about 50% of new plots seem to follow this structure #second one prompted this post because i saw a blurb for a peter pan retelling #that branded itself as feminist which raised my hackles #then said it was wendy darling goes to neverland to save her daughter which piqued my interest #then went on to explain how wendy was in the asylum after her adventures and completely turned me off the story #and the third one's just like dude that plot point has been hammered to the ground #there are so many other aspects of the narnia structure that you can explore #where are the kids who are just happy they had a magical vacation that no one else on earth has ever been able to experience #the only person who gets any credit for this plot is catherynne m. valente because she had the character come back to an abusive environment #which is legitimately heartbreaking and doesn't make the character seem whiny or ungrateful #ok there was that one book that was sort of exploring susan's story and took a slightly more nuanced approach #but in general i'm just not interested in those stories when you could be exploring literally any other portal fantasy trope
