#then again i had a harder time getting into botw as it is
Note
Still playing through ToTK and I get a *BoTW* fic idea because of course I do; I'd repurpose it for ToTK but it doesn't quite fit, yet nonetheless I gotta share it before it leaves me (still gonna try to write it though) --
So, it's always bugged me a little bit that Link would go out of his way to do Korok puzzles and extra shrines and whatnot when they all take a fair amount of time and Zelda's whittling herself down in the castle, and Link generally isn't one to mess around while her wellfare is endangered.
BUT I present another theory; that the first time Link decided to pass one up as not worth the time, he felt that little ember of Zelda in the back of his mind wilt a little bit, and realized that she actively looked forward to each and every one of them. After a century of monotony, her mind is starved for stimulation, and fuck if Korok puzzles aren't the kind of brain teaser she would actually kill for (or, as the case goes, sacrifice another week or two cumulatively for).
And bonus points if he starts soliciting her commentary for some of the harder ones.
(Idk I think it's the fact that I'm reading BoTW fic while I push through the end of ToTK so I don't spoil myself but this came to me and I'm like, 'Ah, this resolves so much ludonarrative dissonance for me.' Thought you might appreciate the idea haha)
Yo. Yes.
I do appreciate this idea oh my god
I always wondered like “okay so link canonically did all of the shrine quests and side quests… so like… Zelda had to wait? Through all those quests? Ig homie did it all bc he knew he had to help and get as strong as possible so he knew he wouldn’t lose again”
And just adding that Zelda DOES have a connection to link through the spirit realm… and that she WOULD definitely get a kick out of the puzzles link goes through… oh I am so here for this idea

A Huge Favor (BotW/TotK Link x Reader)
Happy Friday Yall! For making it through the week, here’s a little gift for you guys. So this is a reader x Link smut. I was thinking about a fem reader while writing this, however there aren’t any pronouns for them so anyone can enjoy. If you love a good b-jay, this one’s for you.
TW: Smut, NSFW, Lewd, Blowjobs, but the word dick isn’t used at all. I put to much effort into this. MDI.
It was your first time doing this, but it didn’t seem like he had noticed, and it’s not like you were going to tell him either. This was just a random act of kindness on your part, and you weren’t trying to get much out of it. If anything you were just surprised that he was the one to ask you for this. Sure at first it wasn’t so out of touch, everyone has their needs, but not everyone was the so-called Hero of Hyrule, and certainly not everyone was a knight. Link could have asked anyone else, or so you thought. Then you realized, he probably wouldn’t be able to. Such a high profile, a role model to all, he couldn’t dare to risk his status and reputation on a simple favor, especially not from anybody as well. So why just have the newest prisoner do it, not like they can say no. Technically you weren’t really a prisoner, you were just placed on “house arrest”… or Kingdom Arrest in this case. Since you were so clever into hiding your true identity, you weren’t seen as a threat, and were able to roam somewhat freely within castle grounds. Outside the Kingdom however, Link was constantly watching your every move, everything you did never went unnoticed by the knight. Even in this moment, his eyes were solely focused on you, he even had most of your hair in his hand. If this really was your first time, he definitely would’ve known by the way your eyes were avoiding his gaze. Anything to keep your mind on what you were doing, but also trying to ignore the less than pleasant taste. It was the main reason why you didn’t like to engage in activities like this, in fact, anything oral on both ends felt strange to you. Surprisingly enough, it wasn’t that bad… either he didn’t do much sweating today or he must’ve cleaned himself up a little before coming to you. That “scent” was still there but you could ignore it. If anything you were mostly surprised by the lack of hair that he had… either he shaves daily or just lacks that particular gene that was given from his father. Regardless, you weren’t really trying to look, you just wanted to get this done as quickly as possible. However, these settle licks weren’t going to do Link any good with his release, so you would have to do more. Hesitate at first, you slowly begin to move forward, actually having the tip in your mouth now. You didn’t think what you were doing was worth much, but suddenly hearing the knight above you gasping at your action made something inside you shake. This was the first time… the first time that you had heard a noise from Link… while it was quick… it was… cute to you. This meant that… he was liking this… Link was actually enjoying this… you needed to hear that soft noise again. Slowly you begin to move your head at a steady pace, just enough to get him going. Link tightens his grip on your hair to keep himself grounded. As he did so, using his other hand, he moved the remaining hair from your forehead to get a clear view of your face. You imagined that he had a slight smirk on his face, in response to how submissive you looked right about now. The thought of that alone made you tingle, both of your hands were placed on the ground as you attempted to stay still, but it was getting harder to do. You moved your head faster as the knight’s breathing began to speed up. The more you tried to take in, the harder it got to stay focused. The thought of his swollen sword hitting the back of your throat almost made you gag, not to mention that your reflexes wasn’t as strong either. Yet with all of this in mind, you still couldn’t bring yourself to stop. The more you moved your tongue, the more noise he would make. The suction from your mouth made him whimper in pleasure, and each time you’d slowly pull away, he whined in protest, keeping your head in place. The more noise Link would make, the intensity of your body parts would become stronger, and it was getting harder and harder to resist a single touch down there. Your fingers tried to grip on the grass below you, but it wasn’t much use, this feeling would not go away. You closed your eyes as tightly as you could to avoid the tears from falling down your face, you didn’t want to seem in discomfort about your situation. Suddenly you felt a soft touch against your cheek, wiping away the few tears that had managed to escape from your eyes. You slowly opened them, and looked up. His eyes… those blue clear eyes… they looked right back at you. Link was staring down at you, but not out of pity, it was out of… compassion. His facial expressions were so soft and genuine, as if he really cared about you. This was the moment… the moment that broke you, and all hell broke loose. Link didn’t even have a chance to comprehend what was happening as he fell back against the wall. You stood up on your knees as your arms were tightly wrapped around his waist, refusing to let go. You had swallowed every ounce of shame while you forced your dear throat to take everything that it had. If the lack of hair was seen as “less” of a man, then his girth definitely made up for it. A part of you even dared to wonder how he was able to hide it so well, you suppose baggy pants really do make a difference. That was as far as you let your mind wander however, you needed to keep yourself focused if you wanted the knight to enjoy himself, and much to your amusement, he was. If Link was trying to hold back before, then he definitely was failing now. His gentle cries of pleasure sent jolts of adrenaline through your lower half, and you couldn’t stop yourself from wanting more. Desperately wanting to calm yourself down, you push your body onto his, giving everything that you hand in that very moment. It appears that as much as you were enjoying this, it became too much for the chosen one to handle. Link tried to remove your arms from his waist, but you didn’t dare to budge. You put your mouth into high gear as you pressed your legs together. You hoped that the friction of your muscles would help your needs, but it didn’t work. Your mind was being filled with the urge to please yourself in any way possible, but you couldn’t let yourself do that. Link and his beautiful cries were your first priority, and who knows if you’ll ever have another chance to do this again. With the last amount of strength and effort that you had left, you push yourself up against Link for the final time, basically sandwiching him between the brick wall and you. This sudden act of motion was the final nail in Link’s coffin. With a scream that you swore could’ve shattered your body if you were made out of glass, your throat was overrun with a liquid texture, almost as thick as a milkshake. You stayed in place as you tried to take in all of his relief, but it was getting hard to do and the fullness of your mouth was starting to get to you. Pretty soon you lost your composure and ended up pulling away from the weak knight, his hands letting go of your head while you did so. Turning away from him, you coughed up the remaining liquids that got caught in your throat and attempted to calm your breathing as you swallowed what was left. You didn’t have time to process the taste of it all before you were pulled back against the wall by Link. You began to speak but he covered your mouth as he pulled your back closer to his chest. Confused at this action, you attempted to pull away until you heard the sound of footsteps, freezing in your tracks. You gently pushed yourself back up against Link as he held you tightly as the footsteps began to get louder. This was it, you’d be caught doing the most unspeakable act upon the castle grounds, and with the Princess’ appointed knight no less. If you had any hopes of getting out of here free of charge… now you are going to get a jail cell… permanently. Or so you thought, instead the pair of people… sounded like two males, decided that whatever they heard must have been an animal that ran off. And with that the footsteps began to fall faint as the men must’ve gone on their ways. You sighed a deep breath of relief as you patiently waited for Link to let you go from his tight grasp… but he did not. Irritated, you tried to remove yourself from his grip but he wasn’t having that either. It appears that he wasn’t just going to let you go that easily, not after the encounter you just had. You felt something moist on your shoulder as he pressed his lips onto your skin, sucking gently. The sensation caught you by surprise that you had stopped breathing for a moment, before softly moaning into Link’s hand that was still tightly on your mouth. You let your head slowly fall back as you quietly enjoyed this moment. Your eyes closed as you fully allowed your body to relax into his hold. You were so in deep space that you didn’t notice that his other hand was moving down your pants. Soon as you felt the slightest movement from his fingers, your eyes shot wide open… Link wasn’t done with you… not quite yet…

Revalink week day 5: Paraglider
A day late, but I'm glad I got this out!
In loving memory of that time I started a new save of botw, got to the cryonis shrine, and killed myself by jumping down because I'd forgotten I didn't have the paraglider yet.
The hill felt perfect, though for what exactly, Link couldn’t tell. It is meager consolation: when no reassuring tug jolts his shoulders to break the plummeting sensation of freefall, he realizes just how badly his memory has failed him again.
Ah.
Later, when he’s gingerly prodding at his bruised ribs and the scrapes his tumble earned him, he gives it some thought. What exactly made him think jumping was safe?
Really, the answer is obvious.
The paraglider in the old man’s hands had filled Link with a profound sense of wrongness. It was ill-suited to the man’s size, the delicate frame looking like it should break under the weight. More than that, Link had taken one look at it and known he’d wanted it, more fiercely than anything he’d wanted in his half day of memories. But even that fierce longing doesn’t explain his sudden recklessness. It doesn’t explain the vivid sense-memory he gets whenever he looks at the nearby hills and the far-off mountains, the tug of desire to make it to the highest peaks only to feel the rush of descent again.
It must have been his, then. He wants it back.
The thought of having it in his possession again spurs him on. He fights his way past the monsters with skills only half-remembered and climbs to the top of the icy mountains to reach the last of the shrines the old man indicated. When he emerges again, the power of a new rune in the Sheikah Slate, the old man appears with the paraglider and more empty promises in hand. He thinks of taking it by force, and only barely quells the urge. Then he thinks of jumping down the mountain again, and somehow that urge is even harder to fight.
When he finally has it in hand again, after a trek to the very top of the temple, he finds that he cannot even enjoy it. The revelations of the old man — of the king — weigh him down. The castle in the distance is no longer an abstract danger he planned to avoid, but the embodiment of his own failure. How is he supposed to succeed on his own where an entire army failed in the past?
At least the feeling of flight, of the wind rushing past his face, is enough to distract from it for a moment until inevitably, his feet touch the ground outside the Great Plateau. That night, when he has reached the first stable on his journey and has learned not to flinch whenever people’s voices get too loud, he takes out the paraglider again. The wood has been treated by an expert hand; the cloth has been made so well that neither rain nor heat affect it. Still, it is not new: time has had its effect on the paraglider as well. He begs needle and thread off another traveler and finds that his hands remember the action of darning.
He does not remember the symbol woven into the cloth.
“Looks like something from the Rito,” says the innkeeper. “There’s this Rito bard who comes around every so often. If you stick around, I’m sure you can catch him.”
Bird people, something in Link’s deeply buried memories says. It would make sense, for them to be the ones to create a way for a Hylian to fly. Up on the Great Plateau, he had seen the menacing shape of a giant bird circling the western reaches of Hyrule. His feet wish to take him there. But he has to continue his journey towards Kakariko Village. So he does not wait for the elusive Rito bard, but instead takes the path further north from the stable.
Lady Impa’s words at least give him an excuse to seek out the Rito. They also give him a name.
Champion Revali of the Rito. The words stir little within him, but they sound as if they should. He fought side by side with the Champions. So was the Rito Champion a friend of his, someone who would give him the tools to take to the sky?
It takes days and days before he can even find out. The plains of Central Hyrule are treacherous and leave him no chance to use the paraglider; the eternal thunderstorm above the Thundra Plateau makes flight a hazard. Even the mountains of Tabantha, so inviting from afar, are buffeted by harsh winds that would crush him against the cliffside given the chance.
But at least he gets there in the end.
Rito Village would be idyllic if it weren’t menaced by the Divine Beast Link spotted all the way back on the Great Plateau. No memory comes to him as he enters the village either, but that’s okay, because near the top of the spiralling staircase, he finally finds what he was looking for, in chipped paint on wood: the same symbol woven into the cloth of his paraglider.
Revali’s Landing.
This must be it, he thinks, elation making him light-headed. And then his memories finally catch up to him and crush his delusions to dust.
If Champion Revali was an ally of his, it was only in the most technical of senses. The Champion saw no worth within him, felt no desire to take to the sky and fight side by side with him. The trail he’s been chasing for so long is a dead end. Champion Revali could never have been the one to give him the paraglider.
He sits down heavily, hands clutching the cloth of the paraglider. Whoever gave it to him must have seen some worth within him regardless. But Rito history is short and fleeting. Their name, and who they were to Link, are long lost to time. All he has of them is this one gift and the freedom it has afforded him.

People. 50.6% of 87 votes are exactly 44 votes. And 49.4% is 43 votes. Tears of the Kingdom lost to Alttp for ONE VOTE
Anyway, I decided to yeet both off the poll! Let the 9th round begin! There are 8 games left, and these are really the best. I still have one game I want to vote but then the choice will be harder!
As I've written many things about totk but I don't want to give unwanted spoilers, this time the rankings are here and my opinions on the games are under the cut!
<< Previous round

Hyrule Warriors / Legends / Definitive
Cadence of Hyrule
Zelda 1
Four Swords Adventures

A link to the Past
Soo! TotK and AlttP. I played AlttP shortly after BotW on nso, when TotK still wasn't out. I liked it a lot at first, but I have to say I didn't complete it. It was technologically advanced for that time for sure, but I don't think it aged well. The dungeons didn't leave me anything valuable to remember, like other games did, the items weren't equipped easily and the story was too simple and banal.
As for TotK. Oh TotK. I got to play botw another bit before returning it (I had borrowed it from a friend), after quitting alttp. And I still liked it! Then I bought TotK and at the beginning I was extremely surprised, it looked so great. I thought Rauru was the same first sage from OoT and he had a "goat disguise" to not be recognized, like his owl form. Of course I was wrong and then I was so disappointed, i left it almost one year ago and don't have any urge to play it again, I probably will though and give it another chance because something was really good like seeing grown up characters or finding those "Zeldas" or building things or finding amiibo costumes. - the story is great for a standalone game, but for zelda? The zonai make no sense to me and contradicted everything we knew. In the past right after sksw the gerudo weren't known, the zora and rito didn't exist, the gorons weren't on death mountain. They should have made another antagonist and not Ganondorf. Zelda's sacrifice was honestly a so great part, but the ending was awful. - the "dungeons" were copies of each other. And short and banal as heck, and the dialogues after each one were always the same. - People didn't remember Link. Only some of the major characters did but the majority of the npcs didn't know him. And Link didn't have the majority of his clothes. I know the outfits weren't mandatory to get in botw (nothing was mandatory tho) but at least the most known could have been left. The gerudo outfit, the climber set, the hylian set, the luminous stone set! They made up a story for the zora tunic and that's a good thing. - The depths were empty and too dark, even after the light roots were lighted. It was too easy to get lost. - the ultrahand and fuse mechanics are amazing as well as the ascend, but they should have made them mandatory at least for some parts of the game, to give them more spotlight. - I would have loved to have way more sksw references, this isn't a flaw of course but a personal preference! Also I would have loved to have Wolf Link as an ally again, instead of the spirits of the sages. - personal experience: the game crashed after I defeated Ganondorf for the last time. I was about to see the final cutscene when the screen went black and it never played (I saw it on youtube). Everything else on the swotch worked perfectly so it was just the game. Of course it doesn't autosave or let people save the game after entering the zone before the first fight with Ganondorf so I'm back there. I hated it.

Botw had such good environmental story telling tbh. All of the broken down guardians they took out of TOTK where near broken down buildings and areas the guardians had destroyed.
Now with them gone there is just such a glaringly obvious hole in TOTK. Of the guardians who were broken down and "dead" how did they "realize" their purpose didn't exist w calamity ganon being gone (but specifically not ganon ganon) and "disappear". Which literally was one of the reasons Nintendo gave for the guardians not being there.
The sheika pillars underground hyrule castle were RIGHT THERE for a segue into the underground and larger sheika pieces. The sheika having tech buried underground was RIGHT THEREEEEE for new and interesting sheika enemies OR building tech ORRR A COMBO like dude! It was all right there! There was already the floating sheika boss DLC like DUDE. I can't spiral into all of the things that could've been but like. Dude. Such a fumble.
I'm shoe-horning this in because I still really really wanted it, REALLLYYYYYYY wanted it. But the ancient sheika tech already had a motorcycle for fucks sake, the teleport horse saddle why NOT have a mechanical sheika bird/plane mount???
The sky was poorly done I think as a main piece in TOTK. It felt empty with no NPCs, no good long term way of traveling around and kind of just. Boring. Could've had wayyy more architecture, story, flora and fauna, npcs literally anything. We have an entire species of flying people, that fly in game.
Why not have them populate the areas when you beat the bosses of those areas? Why notttt have a long term mount appear after discovering the entire sky area or even most of it? As a way to reward the player, make travel easier, and keeping the challenge and intent of discovering the sky islands from various ground level ways?
Like I don't get the choices made. The disrespect to the consumer and long time fans. The self conscious and pitiful choice to force the player into using new mechanics because they don't have faith in their product. For BOTW and TOTK they repeated over and over and over again how the player chooses to play the game and how we make it what we want etc.
Not only is that weak as hell with the product they release but also straight up not true. They very clearly had a specific way they wanted people to play the game and did a lot of things to make it harder to play without the zonai tech.
ANYWAY

Febuwhump day 19 - “you deserve this”
HI I’M UPLOADING YESTERDAYS BECAUSE I COULDN’T DO IT THEN I’ll get today’s up at some point hopefully 😅 I’m not even that happy with how this turned out, but that’s life I guess I hope you all enjoy it anyway
Injury/blood warning, it’s not too graphic but it’s there!
Slate is botw Link, and Sprite is oot/mm.
Courage of ages explanation
————————————————————
Slate squeezed his eyes shut, clutching at his leg as he tried to breathe evenly.
His pant leg was sticky with blood, and moving it at all was agony, but he had to get out of the ravine he’d tumbled into. He didn’t have any healing items with him, not even his pouch was on his hip where it belonged.
And who’s fault was that, idiot?
Slate groaned, and looked up at the steep ledge he needed to climb up in order to get out of the ravine. Normally he’d scamper out in a minute or two, but his leg was probably broken, and the idea of trying to drag himself up did not sound fun.
...But it was that, or lie here and hope his bloody leg didn’t attract predators.
Biting back a groan, Slate began to slide himself over to the ravine wall, and painstakingly pull himself up, arms shaking. His bad leg bumped lightly against the side, and he hissed in pain, sweat trailing down his forehead as he dragged himself upward.
The climb only got harder the longer he went, arms shaking and leg aching almost agonizingly, but he kept going, ignoring the hot pain rippling all along his side.
“You deserve this anyway,” Slate gritted out to himself, blinking back tears as his leg burned with pain. “You deserve this, it was your fault, and you completely—“
He bit off a whine, agony pulsing through his leg.
He pressed his face to the wall for a minute and gasped in a breath, then continued to pull himself up out of the small ravine, gritting his teeth against the white-hot pain wrenching through his leg.
“You’re the one who decided to storm off after a stupid argument,” he hissed, speaking aloud mostly to distract himself from the pain. “It’s your fault he was even mad, and he’s perfectly within his rights to be mad because it’s your fault he’s even here—”
His hold slipped and Slate gasped as he fell back to the bottom of the ditch, yelling as pain slammed up his leg so harshly his vision whited out at the edges.
All he could do was lie there for a long time, gasping raggedly as he tried not to cry out again. His leg hurt even worse than before, and he felt oddly dizzy as he looked down at it, something about the angle a little funny looking.
Stupid stupid stupid.
He closed his eyes and swallowed, thinking back to how he’d even ended up here.
An argument had started between him and Sprite, something stupid neither of them really cared about. But it had somehow escalated, until they were both just yelling at each other, ending with Sprite saying it was all Slate’s fault that any of them were here in the first place.
Slate hadn’t even known what to say, words dying in his throat as he stared at Sprite. He’d wanted to defend himself, but how could he?
Sprite was right. It was all his fault.
It was his fault they’d all been ripped away from their homes and families, his fault the Yiga had decided to exact revenge on all the heroes, his fault he hadn’t realized what they were up to and had allowed them to grow powerful enough to even drag all the heroes here to try and kill them—
He squeezed his eyes shut, and put an arm over his face.
He’d just run off after that. Everyone had been staring at him and Sprite, but he hadn’t said a word before taking off like the coward he was, ignoring the few calls of his nickname.
And then he’d been so caught up in his thoughts that he’d tripped on a root and gone falling straight into the ravine.
His leg throbbed again and Slate bitterly welcomed it, watching the shadows grow longer. It had been a while since he left camp and fell, at least an hour by his guess, and he wasn’t sure he was up to trying to get out again yet. Besides, lying hurt at the bottom of a ravine was no less then he deserved. It was nice and quiet down here at least.
“Slate?”
His heart sank at the voice, but he moved his arm so he could peer up at who had spoken. Light’s head poked over the edge above him, multicolored eyes wide with worry, and Slate averted his gaze. He wasn’t sure he’d wanted to be found just yet.
“Slate are you okay? Oh no your leg— don’t worry, we’ll get you back up!” His head disappeared for a moment. “Hey Mini, I found him!”
Slate let out a quiet sigh, and kept his arm over his face as he heard scuffing from the top of the ravine. A rustling noise sounded out, and then there was a hand gently tapping his arm.
“Hi Slate,” Mini said softly, and Slate let out a grunt in response. “Light’ll be down in a second. Your leg looks really bad, are you okay?”
“Fine,” he murmured.
He was sure Mini frowned at him, but then footsteps padded in the dirt and another hand was poking at his leg.
“Holy crow what did you do Slate? This is broken in at least two places,” he said in disbelief, and Slate finally looked at up.
“I fell, okay? I’ll be fine,” he muttered, then winced when his leg throbbed again.
Mini gave him a little pat on the arm. “You will, once you have a potion or two.”
“Yeah but I think his leg will have to be set before we give him anything,” Light said, sounding a little grossed-out. “Which means we have to get him back to camp, because I’m not doing that.”
“I wouldn’t trust you to do it anyway,” Mini teased, but Slate didn’t laugh like he normally would. He merely continued to look up at the sky.
It took some doing, and Slate nearly blacked out at one point when his leg was hit, but Mini and Light eventually managed to get him up out of the ravine, and without jostling his leg too much. They were both a little short to easily support him, but they did their best, and slowly walked back to camp.
Not that Slate really wanted to go, but he hadn’t exactly been given a choice.
They shuffled along in relative silence for a while, Slate occasionally letting out a hiss of pain, and Mini or Light offering quiet encouragement. He wasn’t sure how long they’d been going through the quiet woods though when Mini suddenly spoke.
“Sprite didn’t really mean all of that you know,” he said quietly. Slate didn’t reply, and he sighed. “I think he’s just still upset Era got so hurt yesterday.”
“Yeah, because a cult from my world dumped him in our group,” Slate muttered. “If I’d just realized what they were up to I could’ve—”
“How could you have possibly known, Slate?” Light asked in disbelief. “It’s not like you knew and decided not to act. And you’re being just as hurt from their actions as the rest of us, if not more. Don’t take on all that guilt, okay?”
What’s a little more? Slate thought to himself, but didn’t vocalize it.
“Nobody blames you Slate,” Mini said gently. “And even if Sprite says he does, I don’t think he actually thinks it’s your fault. He’s just... tired, I think.”
“Well he doesn’t exactly sleep very much,” Light snorted, but Mini just shook his head, looking a little sad.
“Not that kind of tired.”
Light looked at him, then nodded a little thoughtfully, and Mini met Slate’s eyes.
“Will you talk to him after we get your leg fixed up?” he asked with a pleading look. “He did look like he felt bad after you left. Plus Era was talking to him, I think he’ll make him see sense. And Slate?”
“Yeah?” he replied tiredly. He felt rather wrung out from the afternoon’s events, and wanted to just collapse by the fire for a while.
“I mean it. It’s not your fault,” Mini said sternly. “It’s the Yiga’s. And you don’t get to blame yourself for their actions.”
“Ap-ap-ap no arguments!” Light said quickly when Slate opened his mouth. “Or we’ll get Gloam on your case, and I’m sure he’s told you this before.”
Slate looked away. “...he has a whole speech,” he admitted, and Light and Mini laughed.
Their group went quiet again after a minute, but Slate felt a little lighter, though the knot of guilt and shame still hung on in his stomach. They needed to figure out how to stop the Yiga before any of them really were killed, but until then... he’d let go of a little of the blame.
But not all of it.
Because despite what anyone said, or tried to convince him of, Slate knew a hefty amount of the blame rested on his shoulders.

Playing Tears of the Kingdom and seriously loving every minute of it so far - there’s so much to do, the battles and puzzles are harder, and the world is stunning and expanded much more than I had expected!
But playing it also makes me feel sad and miss BotW a ton.
I haven’t done all main story quests yet, including the 4 main quest dungeons, but it seems like because we are getting powers and themes that predates calamity from 10,000 year ago, we just ignore what transpired in the Calamity???
I can headcanon and justify not seeing the Sheikah Towers and shrines and divine beast, not having the Champion’s powers and Sheikah slate anymore. But so far I’ve not encountered overt mentions of the old Champions besides in location names, even though they were such prominent and legendary figures in the last game??? Like so far I i haven’t even heard any character mention the champions by name, even though Yunobo is literally a descendent of Daruk, and Sidon is Mipha’s little brother??? The only thing I have right now is the Champion’s photo in Zelda (Link’s) House in Hateno. But otherwise, my weapon, shield and bow display are gone, and I had hoped they transferred my data from BotW to see the Champion’s weapon hung there.
Another example why this upsets me so much: And Yunobo literally had Daruk’s protection in the me last game and wore a boyscout(?) scarf in the champion’s colour. Where did both of these signature qualities go???? And Yunobo has the Boulder Breaker but never mentions how he got it? Is it’s a replica or not? (Did Link and Zelda went around and gave them to the new champions during the gap years between games????)
Revali’s landing still exist by name. Daruk’s mountain carving (?) in Goron City is there. But the fuck they did to Mipha’s statue???? How could they replace her I am so mad when I realized it’s different when I arrived to the Domain??? It seems OOC that Sidon would let that happen? Like naming a place as Mipha’s court seems like an ill compromise.
I get moving forward past the grieving, but it doesn’t mean we need to forget these prominent and legendary figures?
I loved the Champions so much in BotW and AoC. Playing BotW puts us in the narrative that not only Link was trying to remember his past comrade, but to also honour them by carrying a piece of their power with him. It’s both for him to kick Ganon’s butt on behalf of his dead comrades, and also for the Champions to show their faith in him and also tell him he’s not alone. To lose all of that now feels like Link is losing his friends all over again and this time more completely and I hate it. :’(

Hi! Quick question, since you're my go-to Zelda resource now (sorry!): I had some serious trouble with OoT when I played it on an emulator, and the only other Zelda games I've played are BotW and TotK; what game would you recommend I start with to kind of ease into playing older, more challenging games? I hear the Oracle games are supposed to be amazing, and there are the remakes of Link's Awakening and SS, but I don't know what to start with. And I just don't want to get super frustrated by quality-of-life stuff right away, ya know? Thanks for feeding my hyperfixation 😄
Oh wow, I am honored to be your go to Zelda source!
As much as I love Ocarina of Time personally, the controls definitely have not aged the best. In my opinion, the best way to play OoT is the 3DS Remake, which made some great updates to the controls and telegraphing for certain puzzles where the hints were a bit obtuse.
I would say that's pretty true when it comes to most of the zelda games with remakes. Wind Waker HD and Skyward Sword HD make tremendous quality of life improvements to their respective games!
As for what, I would recommend next, it would probably depend on what you're looking for most with your next Zelda game. I suggest either Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, or A Link to the Past.
If you like the openes of BotW and TotK, try Wind Waker. Like BotW, it takes place in Hyrule generations after disaster has befallen the land. After a certain point, the map completely opens up, and you get to spend hours exploring the open sea and the countless islands that dot it. Recommend the HD version over the original for the Swift Sail alone.
If you want the least frustrating experience possible, I would recommend Skyward Sword. No "old school Zelda toughness" here. Not to knock SS though, I think it has the tightest story of any zelda game! SS is also the first game in the official timeline, so it might make sense to start there. I think the combat and gameplay are super fun. Be warned it is also the most linear Zelda game of all time (besides the ones with literal levels). Again, I recommend the HD version over the original for its quality of life improvements (be careful if you play the original disc version on Wii as there's a way to play that will break the game and I don't think you can download the patch anymore, any digital version should be fine).
If you are thinking about getting into top-down zelda games, I would recommend A Link to the Past. It is probably harder than most of the other top-down ones, but all the other ones are really just taking its formula and twisting. Link's Awakening and A Link Between Worlds are both sequels to ALttP, and the oracle games and The Minish Cap are not as grand in scope. I think if you play ALttP first, it will also help you appreciate how the others are innovating. The graphics are solid, the world is huge, and while not the greatest, the story more than gets the job done. Yes, it does have some "old school zelda toughness," it's certainly not the hardest (looking at you LoZ and AoL), and I think it's not unreasonable.
All this said, every game is designed to be a "jumping in" point, so there's not really a wrong answer. If I had to pick one, though, it would be it would be ALttP as I think it's just a really solid game and makes a great base to then play LA, ALBW, OOA/OOS, and TMC.
Hope this helped!

I used to be on the “botw Zelda is abusive” train for a short time on my first playthrough, until I watched the flower field and gerudo desert cutscenes. Now she’s up there in the Best princesses in Zelda series list (Mipha is above her cause of favoritism, I know I know, it’s dumb) Revali became my second favorite character in the game, underneath Mipha that is…. What’s your opinion on the relationships between (Revali and Link), and (Mipha and Link)?
i've gone into the other champions a bit before but never in a TON of detail so i'll do my best lol
mipha is difficult for me. I think that while botw has some of the best-written female characters in the franchise she is the one place where it falls short, as almost all of her characterization is framed in the context of her relationship to men. that being said, in regards to her in-game relationship to link i think she is one of the most important figures in his life pre-calamity. She explicitly knew him as a child before he claimed the sword and therefore has context for his behavior that almost everyone else around him does not. she understands his self-sacrificing and self-isolationist tendencies as a trauma response and therefore has the unique ability among those close to him to see him for what he is--a traumatized child soldier, as opposed to the perfect hero facade he projects. what's interesting is that despite this link still never visibly drops his guard with her--we never see him speak to her AT ALL, which is interesting since we know he does speak to zelda after a certain point (her diary confirms this) and he continues to self-sacrifice despite her voicing her concerns to him directly. My best read on their situation is that link feels his relationship with her has been irreversibly tainted by the war they're tied up in. he sees both himself and mipha as soldiers of hyrule, and is unable to break away from that perception even when she expresses to him that she doesn't view him as the hero of hyrule. Mipha, on the other hand, desperately wants to return to the way she and link were before he claimed the sword. Zora live much longer than hylians, and she struggles to deal with the massive change link seems to have undergone in such a short period of time while she still feels exactly the same. She settles on supporting him however she can, but she can't help but wish that nothing ever had to change between them.
revali and link are. wow. they are so much. Revali is such an interesting character in relation to link because he essentially desperately wants the position that link resents being forced into. Revali WANTS to be a hero. he wants the glory and the prestige and the attention that link is so terrified of. He resents link for, in his eyes, taking up this position while being unprepared and underqualified. And link AGREES WITH HIM on some level. he is fully aware that he isn't qualified or prepared for ganon, which is why he goes to such lengths to project a false persona of silent perfection. but he is also slightly too stubborn to just take revali's bitchy attitude lying down, so they clash. revali has no way to know how much of what he believes about link is actually true and how much what he says actually gets to link, of course, but i think he was probably unintentionally a bit of a motivator for link to train harder and fall deeper into a mentality of self-sacrifice, because he KNOWS he isn't good enough but he also absolutely isn't allowed to fail. Link and revali were kind of locked in a vicious cycle with each other where their competition drove them both closer and closer to sacrificial suicide. i don't fault either of them for this, though. revali was a huge bitch to link but again, he was a young adult at most who had been raised to value perfection above all else. almost everyone in botw is a victim of circumstance and almost every relationship pre-calamity suffers from the context in which it was formed, but link and revali are one of the most obvious examples of this. in a world where they didn't have to be child soldiers primed to lay down their lives in a war against evil itself, they might have been the perfect friend/rival dynamic and spurred each other towards self-improvement rather than self-sacrifice.

So, I know that the point of that whole story with the Chain and Demise is to provide angst, explore the Chain’s reactions to the Curse, and show how it might affect their relationship with Sky…
But what IF Sky didn’t stop Demise from creating the Curse BECAUSE his eardrums burst and literally could not hear Demise talking? Just an interesting little thought bubble I had.
I think that those that blamed Sky to some degree would have a much harder time blaming him since, y’know, eardrums burst.
Wait that’s genius! Did a bit of google searching and yeah, burst eardrums can be caused by loud sounds and changes in pressure. Channelling lighting and having thunderbolts crash down just metres from where you're standing could absolutely lead to that.
How would that change things? Well, Sky would objectively be more sympathetic and almost as much of a victim as them. Although now the other members (especially Twilight and Wind who brutally murdered Ganondorf), would be more confused than angry at his inaction. Although members of the chain like Hyrule and Twilight would be the first to actively speak out to defend Sky.
With this context Sky and Wild would still fight since their issues* go far beyond this, but they won't physically attack each other- well Wild still might, but Sky wouldn't have to retaliate like he did in Recovered Regrets because the others would step in.
Sky's silence during the comic panel where Legend spells out everyone's origin is not excused though. Sure he wouldn't have known about the curse, but hearing that he's the only one who doesn't know who Ganon is should have caused him to do some investigating. Even if he avoided it to protect himself that wouldn't be enough to calm Legend's anger and it shows to the others a lack of care and a sort of detachment- which is another thing that annoyed Wild.
In a sense the focus would be more on finding out more about the curse, since this would be the first Sky's hearing of it in full. You could go on a full existential deep dive into the nature of their roles, the extent of their responsibilities and their worth as individuals separated from their identity as the hero. This is something I only hinted at using Wild, Time and Legend because I hadn’t thought much about it yet wanted to focus on Wild's personal reaction specifically.
Overall this would be a much more productive outcome (also Four wouldn’t split) which would bring the chain closer to learning the truth and closer together as a band of brothers. Man I love found families!
Thank you sm for the ask dear reader! I hope this answer was ok :))
Recovered Regrets
Recovered Regrets story notes
*Those issues I mentioned were just little things that the comic hinted at but are never explored and don’t come up again.
Such as when Wild broke the Master Sword from overuse and Sky went ballistic, yet Time didn’t scold Wild for his use of the blade and actively said that he must be allowed to use it because it’s his birthright. The thing is, Sky has every reason to not allow Wild to use the Master sword, in BoTW this behavior made sense because Wild was in a survival situation- but in LU he has no reason to use the Master sword essentially like a tool. Yet no one but Sky and maybe Legend sees this lack of respect as a problem, and even worse Time enables it. It’s an interesting conflict set up but never goes anywhere so I thought I’d bring it up a little in the story. I explained it more in my story notes
The fact that sword treated Sky so well would be a point of tension between him Time and Wild
That would then contribute to Wild’s inferiority issues and jealousy of Sky, who seemingly had everything work out for him. Since Sky can’t stop Wild from using the Master sword he’d resort to lectures, but Wild would just take this as him showing off his superiority
Btw, Time and Legend are Hylia/goddess skeptics in the story, not haters. They’re just fed up being pushed around by divine entities and want to get to the bottom of things.

WEIRD WRITER ASKS? YES? (Also all haail Lord Gnives)
5. Do you have any writing superstitions? What are they and why are they 100% true?
19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?
23. Describe the physical environment in which you write. Be as detailed as possible. Tell me what’s around you as you work. Paint me a picture.
33. Do you practice any other art besides writing? Does that art ever tie into your writing, or is it entirely separate?
5. I don't have any weird writing superstitions! However, I am a firm believer that if I'm getting in my head too much about being a bad writer, I need to write. Quickest way to make me feel better. It may not be good, but it's better than ruminating.
19. Well, I started writing in 5th-6th grade when I had this grand idea for a novel. It was essentially the Warrior Cats setting with a Lion King plot, but... with unicorns. Real cool. My 6th grade English teacher was really supportive, which meant a lot to me. Shortly after that I fell into POTC and started writing POTC fic on FF.net at the tender age of 13. I was also on Deviantart. Who let me do that??
That fizzled out and I didn't write again for a long, long time. I got wrapped up in my horseback riding and was doing other creative projects, mainly making videos on equestrian Youtube (oh boy). Then as school got harder and I went off to college and then grad school, I barely even had time to read.
Lockdown changed all of that! My best friends and I started an online dnd game, and oh man, it got me writing. The way I prep is pretty involved and I wrote full-ass paragraphs when I started out because I wasn't as good at improvising settings and wanted to include some pre-determined scenes. Towards the end it morphed into writing some really fun monologues, which my players loved (and still love!). . At this same time, I got into fanfic again - starting with BOTW, then moving onto The Adventure Zone and The Magnus Archives - but I didn't write any.
Then I got into Trigun. And got into Trigun fic. One day I was brushing my teeth and the first few lines of what became Funeral Rites popped into my head, and Oops! Have to write it or the beast in my head will break out! And now we're here. I'm having fun. Yes, yes, the tiger is out!
23. I write in my car, hurtling 70 miles an hour down the highway, music blasting, while my little Vash plushie bleaches in the sun on the dashboard. I write in my head, scrambling frantically for my phone or a scrap of paper to get an idea down. I write on the couch, curled up oh so cozy under a blanket with a cat and some kind of carbonated drink (like our Lord Gnives, I too am a little beverage bitch). I write at my kitchen table, slurping coffee in the wee hours of the morning when I can't sleep, back hunched like a cooked shrimp (this is when I like to write best) (I will regret it).
I write after work, with discord open next to my WIP, cracking jokes with friends or groaning to my beta who is always so right about what needs to change. Most importantly, I write when there's something in me that needs to get out, and the words sometimes surprise me into catharsis or into giggles. I write when it feels good or bad or whatever, but the act of creation is invariably fulfilling. Even if it's bad writing, it's still something, not nothing.
33. I occasionally dabble in visual art (usually digital), but I'm often frustrated by drawing people and I rage-quit quite often. It would be nice if I could draw the scenes in my head, but alas.

I'll say something controversial: I feel like almost nobody cares about any weird shit with Yona/Sidon bc they're a straight-couple. I've been in the LoZ fandom for some time, and the amount of double standards for shipping are really just depressing. Mainly looking at Botw/Totk bc of the bigger amount of folks into it: M/F? Yeah do whatever, doesn't matter. If you dare claim that some point of proof isn't that clear cut tho? Fuck you! You're just huffing copium!! F/F mostly porn, but literally no one cares. Doesn't matter if what their relations are? Urbosa/Zelda? Sure they're like aunt and niece in the game, but now they fucking, we don't care! M/M "How dare you men can just be friends you weirdo." "Haha, fujoshi's just can't handle their precious ships being destroyed." Etc etc... Idk, just THE DOUBLE STANDARD.
See, I didn't want to answer this ask because I was hoping that the backlash against M/M ships in Western TotK fandom was dying down.
Although, when I say that, I should just specify 'against SidLink' because I've been seeing tons of Ganon/Rauru content or Tauro/Link content and no one has beef.
But, once again, a SidLink artist who has been posting their comic recontextualizing Sidon's marriage with Yona -- not even dismissing her character, merely showing how she would be supportive with Sidon 'having so much love in his heart to share' -- has been showing the pages of Instagram comments they've been getting about 'lol, cope harder', 'fujos just want everyone to be gay', 'so you we're hating women?'
Honestly, it reminds me of that window of time back in the MLP: FiM heyday where Equestria Daily was posting fics with every ship variable of the Mane Six or other female characters possible... But the moment they had a fic spotlight for an M/M fic (iirc it was for Big Mac and Caramel aka Horseshoes) there were a bunch of comments going 'Ugh, why are we posting gay fanfic now?'

how do Gorons' gender ties to your genderqueer Link headcanons?
Right! Oh, I have Thoughts about this.
Like that Goron meta stated, I believe that the Gorons are, by nature, agender. Hylians see them as male, and as such they're referred to with male pronouns in Hylian; in contrast, the Gerudo see them as female (and I believe this would also be reflected in the Gerudo language if we saw more of it). This is why Gorons are allowed in Gerudo Town.
As for the Gorons themselves, they don't mind either interpretation, but neither is exactly true. I imagine the Goron language is gender-neutral in structure, and when we hear them using terms like brother, it's merely a Hylian translation of an originally neutral concept (sibling/close friend/person I trust implicitly).
So how does that tie into Link?
(Obligatory disclaimer: the following is all my personal headcanon. Your headcanon may not match mine, and that's perfectly okay!)
In the BoTW memories, we see a Link who led an extremely regimented life, and suffered from that enough to develop some pretty bad anxiety. So any inclinations of genderqueerness would go completely unnoticed. He wouldn't even think to consider the option.
But then you get to BoTW proper, and (depending on your playstyle) he very quickly starts to deviate from the path set out for him. Oh yes, he will help the people of Hyrule. He will face Ganon eventually. But in the meantime, he's also going to climb every mountain he sees and probably fight Lynels while riding a bear or something. On fire.
So when Link goes to Gerudo and has to wear the vai outfit, that's... probably a lot more comfortable than anticipated. But y'know, it's just a nice outfit. Doesn't necessarily mean anything. And if it becomes harder and harder to deal with the idea that the Gerudo wouldn't welcome the 'voe' he really is... Well, that's just because no one likes lying to their friends, right?
(on a sidenote, I am forever salty that you cannot upgrade the vai set. Make it happen, botw2.)
Because it's not like he feels unhappy as a man! It's just that... well, being seen as a woman is nice too.
But again, this is a Link who lived the majority of his life in a very strict environment. For a long time, he had no idea that it was possible to be anything else than what people expected him to be, and he's only now learning that.
So here's where the Gorons come in. Because having people who don't fit anywhere within that male-female binary, is a new concept. It's a revelation. You don't have to choose. You can be male, and female, or something else entirely, or nothing at all.
And that's something that would be so important to BoTW!Link. This ability to choose, the option to be whoever he wants to be, unconstrained by any notions that were prescribed to him in the past... Throughout the game, he's learning who is was, and more importantly who he wants to be, and I believe having the Gorons around would help immensely with that.

top 5 side characters (from anything at all)
Oooooh side characters... that's a good question... I think I'll pick my fav side character from my most recent fandoms, one from each.
5) (Doctor Who) Missy- This incarnation of the Master is always very fun to watch, because her actress Michelle Gomez absolutely spends every second chewing the scenery clear off the walls. I also always enjoyed how they gave her a clear character arc in the seasons she appeared in- plus, it was lovely to see an incarnation of the Master who wasn't clear-cut "evil" as past ones have been, but rather Chaotic Neutral, and just in the game for the benefit of herself.
4) (The Legend of Zelda) Revali. A lot of the gaming community drags on this one, but I think there's a ton of interesting threads one can pull from what little we get of him in BotW canon that lend towards a fascinating picture of an incredibly insecure young warrior who's lashing out against someone (Link) who he sees as gaining everything he ever wanted but never working a second for it, as opposed to his hard, years-long struggle in perfecting his special flying ability. It's sad, in the end- because had he realized that Link was burdened by his own destiny and worked just as hard as he had to himself feel "deserving" of it, I bet they might've been able to find something to connect over, and became friends.
3) (The Adventure Zone) Barry Bluejeans- Goddammnit, FUCK YOU BARRY BLUEJEANS for having such a stupid ass name and making me CRY over you in just one 5 minute prologue! I really, really love this NPC... there's such a deep tragedy to his story- losing his wife and his whole found family and not even being able to remember that they're gone while in human form- and yet, every time he dies and goes back into lich form and remembers it all, still he manages to pick himself up and try again. Work harder. Work smarter. Set himself up for success each time he clones himself and returns to his human form to make his plan work. He fights tirelessly for YEARS without an ounce of thanks just because he loves his family and the world they've entered so much that he wants to make sure they'll all be safe, in the end. What a man.
2) (Gravity Falls) Fiddleford McGucket- For such an otherwise funny but unremarkable joke character back in season 1, it was amazing how the writers were ultimately able to transform him into such a tragic figure, and utilize him to give context to why the whole town literally pays no heed to any of the weirdness going on all around them. He's the sort of character who gives the show amazing re-watch energy- at this point, when I go back through the show, every single appearance he has just makes me feel incredibly sad- AND a lot of his otherwise "random" or "quirky" characteristics start to make a lot more sense. He's a man who lives in the dump, but is capable of building incredibly complex machines?" He's a literal genius mechanic who's simply gone through severe memory slippage. Said memory slippage? Self-inflicted by a memory erasing device he invented himself. Said memory erasing device? Has been used in the years since to purge the town of their memories of the supernatural. His backstory blasts open a whole new door of lore possibilities in this show. Love him.
1) (Steven Universe) Connie Connie Connie Connie Connie- Connie, my LOVE- I feel like by the end of the show she's grown into more of a main character than just a side, but that shows perhaps just HOW much wonderful development she gets throughout her journey. She grew from a timid young girl unsure of herself and her place in the world around her, to a fierce teen who has purpose, ambitions, and has a whole constellation of connections and confidants ready to cheer her on. I'm really proud of her <3
Every single time she showed up on screen for a new episode I got like, indescribably happy and went "damn this is going to be a good one," and basically every single SU reactor I've seen has had the same experience, so I think that alone shows how beloved Connie is, and how well written a character she is too. It's always great to have such a grounded presence amidst characters living in a world of fantasy.

My long winded thoughts on TOTK, aka I just beat the game so let me write this up
Just a fair warning this will include full spoilers for TOTK. You have been warned. What lies below are some of my rambling (long winded) thoughts I collected after beating TOTK for the first time. Some would be stretched to call this a review. I personally would just prefer to call this as my own ramblings I can refer back to in a digital sense. I’m trying to in corporate a lot of my thoughts into this piece, but as I am writing it I am finding it harder and harder to talk about everything. So I will probably leave something out on accident and I apologize for that. Again: Warning if you want to avoid any spoilers don’t read past this point.
Also just gonna apologize right now for the length of this one. I had a lot to talk about, but had to cut some stuff out and even then this is an extremely long post.
Table of contents:
0. Intro: we gotta start somewhere 1. The Voice Acting Pre-ramble 2. The Tears of the kingdom (or in other words: the story) 3. The return of the rushed and unrewarding ending. 4. The Disconnect between BOTW and TOTK 5. List of complaints that were improved on (?). 6. Who knew Nuts and Bolts had good ideas? (Or the new powers in TOTK) 7. Rapid fire list of new things I liked 8. Conclusion
0. Intro: we gotta start somewhere
So, here we are. TOTK came out exactly 2 weeks ago from this post. And I just beat it. Took about 72 hours over 2 weeks. So, what do I think about TOTK? After all I was quite harsh on BOTW in my write up for BOTW on May 5th. And it has been three weeks since I posted that write up. So how did TOTK live up to my expectations?
Well, I’m not gonna beat around the bush. I loved TOTK. It’s not a perfect game, and shares a fair amount of flaws from BOTW. But I had an absolute blast playing through TOTK.
I mentioned in my last write up that I don’t like to give out numbered reviews. That’s mostly because I tend to flip flop my scores around. It’s kinda one of those things that the score I give for something really depends on how I feel that day. But if I could retroactively give BOTW a numbered score, it would be a 6/10. It’s not a bad time overall. But there’s a lot of room for improvement since it can be quite rough.
So what about TOTK? What score would I give that game? I’m thinking an 8/10 right now. It’s almost a perfect game for me. But there’s some parts that are really rough. Plus it still shares some flaws from BOTW, and biggest for me of all is there is no post-game content. That last point also makes me want to give this game a 7/10. It’s that disappointing to me that once again we are not given a chance to explore a peaceful world that we helped to create. It’s so baffling to me that Nintendo thought that was a good idea again. Give me some rewards for beating the game, besides the petty star sticker next to my save profile. But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself here. Let me try to describe this game in a similar format to how I described BOTW.
1. The Voice Acting Pre-ramble
Yeah, the voice acting returns with a vengeance in this game. But I knew from my recent play time with BOTW that I couldn’t stand the EN voice acting and that would probably hurt my time with the game. So the moment I got the chance to (as in the first five seconds of hitting play on the game) I switched over to the JP voices. And, thank Hylia for that, I am so glad I did that. It massively improved my opinion of the game and the story moving forward. I think there’s a disconnect from how the EN VAs are trying to convey the characters and how the JP VAs do it. EN Zelda sounds like a pompous upper class princess that wants to be treated with respect but still doesn’t under stand why the lower classes of Hyrule may distrust her. Meanwhile JP Zelda sounds like an innocent girl told to take on the weight of the world and doesn’t quite know how to deal with that heavy burden.
I don’t know, this might just be my hate for the EN Voice acting coming out but I really just don’t like Zelda’s characterization in the EN side. It might some kind of cultural language barrier when trying to translate the game into English.
But enough about voice acting. I played TOTK with JP voices on the whole time and I enjoyed all the voices and thought they fit their characters nicely.
2. The Tears of the kingdom (or in other words: the story)
So, one of my biggest gripes of BOTW was the disjointed and lack luster story. The story focused on how Zelda failed to live up to the expectations thrown at her. Which is a tragic tale, yes. However it got very stale and eventually annoying when every single piece of the story linked back to this point. The main issue I had was that there was no major wrap up point for that tragic tale. Well until the end of the game that was. But then we see the conclusion for like a minute or so and then BOTW ends and tells you to play TOTK if you want more. So going into TOTK I had some very low expectations. And honestly that might have helped. Because TOTK’s story compared to BOTW is actually one I care about.
Alright warning again about story spoilers. Skip to next section if you don’t want to read this.
The first thing that happens in TOTK is that Ganondorf wakes up. Yes that Ganondorf. But a new version. His hatred and malice was spilling out creating the “great calamity” from BOTW. But in this game he wakes up and immediately attacks Link and Zelda. Shenanigans ensue: Link looses all hearts and stamina; Zelda falls down a pit (but time warps herself); Link looses his right arm; and the master sword is shattered. Basically starting from scratch all over again. I won’t do a full summary since I think that would take up like 2,000 words. And I kinda wanna spare my hands for doing that. But needless to say I already like this premise way better. There’s a definitive goal: Find Zelda. There’s a definitive villain: Defeat Ganon. And a decent explanation to why Link looses all upgrades from the first game. All in all a pretty great start to a game. But wait it gets better. Turns out this game has the seven sages. Yup, the seven sages from OOT. When I saw this I was so excited. It’s not exactly the same sages from OOT. But it’s the idea of seven sages helping Link to stop the great evil that is Ganondorf.
TOTK also starts by explaining who the Zonai are. Which were barely hinted at in BOTW. I don’t think I even mentioned the Zonai in my BOTW write up. But not only does TOTK explain stuff about the Zonai, it turns out the Zonai play a huge part of the story. Since the Zonai’s Secret Stones are the MacGuffin that gives who ever holds them great power, turning them into sages. But the stones only amplifies power already there. It’s not gonna awaken a new power in you all of a sudden. But there’s also one more note, don’t eat them. If you do you will become an immortal dragon and loose all sense of self. Which is a neat extra side note for lore purposes on explaining how the giant dragons like Farosh exist in hyrule.
So yeah, I massively enjoyed this setting way more than BOTW’s story. I don’t know if it’s because I already knew so much from BOTW that hearing new things in this story really ended up helping. But it certainly didn’t hurt.
3. The return of the rushed and unrewarding ending.
I kinda spoiled this earlier, but yeah the ending to TOTK is similar to BOTW’s. It ends, rolls credits, quick cutscene, and then reload back to the title screen where you can then reload your save file right before the final boss with a new star sticker icon next to it. I know this is a trend with Zelda games. Once the evil is vanished the story is no more. But with huge open world games like this, especially since I enjoyed the setting of TOTK more than BOTW, I think it’s a huge wasted potential to not reward the player by seeing the world in a peaceful state. Or to see how people react. What the next things would be like. Like imagine if the end of BOTW was to finish the shrines, koroks or whatever but along side that you start working with Zelda to establish a reconstruction of Hyrule. But that doesn’t happen in BOTW. Nor does it happen here in TOTK. There’s this kind of disconnect between the player and link about what happened in BOTW to TOTK.
Which speaking of...
4. The Disconnect between BOTW and TOTK
I know it’s a hard challenge to even build such huge games like BOTW and TOTK. But I am disappointed by some of the lack of continuity between these games. I wonder how much of the game actually depends on your save from BOTW and how much is a mirage. In BOTW you can help foster a new town called Tarrey Town. In TOTK, Tarrey Town exists and has expanded. But does this mean this action is because Link, being played by me, helped Tarrey Town? Or does this happen no matter what and Tarrey Town always exists? I think it’s the latter. And frankly I don’t blame Nintendo for not creating systems that check every little thing like that from BOTW to TOTK. But at the same time there are some other times that this “disconnect” irks me.
The main disconnect is a question that remained in my head the entire game. “Where are the guardians and divine beasts?” Like no seriously. Where are they? They’re just gone in TOTK. Did they get repurposed and destroyed? What happened to the sheikah towers? The only evidence I can even spot of the old sheikah stuff from BOTW in TOTK is the guardian that sits up on the Hateno Research lab. But that’s it. Maybe I missed some important diary log where this is explained. But I just couldn’t find a reason for this. Link probably knows what happened. But since he’s mute we don’t get to hear that side of things. Though I am definitely not trying to say that Link should have had voiced lines or anything. If anything I am really glad he doesn’t speak. But he just doesn’t communicate to us the players in any way.
And honestly that is something that is bugging me. With so many characters having so much dialogue and even some having voiced lines, it’s baffling to me that we know so little about Link himself. Link acts as an avatar for the player, until he doesn’t and does stuff on his own. Like we, the player(s), don’t know exactly what happened between BOTW and TOTK. But Link sure does. So there’s a weird disconnect there where you could draw a ven-diagram that showcases the difference in what Link knows and what we the Players know.
Like a good example of this is how Purah’s first appearance is treated in TOTK. To us the player it is a shock that the once child looking researcher now looks like a mid 20 something grad student. So the cut scene plays out to be a surprise to that fact. However the cut scene really just showcases how surprised Purah is to see Link is alive and well. Link isn’t shocked about her appearance and there’s no mention of it. But we as the player are vastly confused on why Purah looks like she aged very rapidly. And in my case I was trying to judge how big of a gap between BOTW and TOTK was* so when I saw Purah for the first time I was wondering if it had been like 15 years or so. But I found out later in a diary she hid that she aged herself up to 100 and then back down to 20 because she was sick and tired of being treated like a child. (*Side note: I think it’s somewhere between 5-10 years of a gap. Probably around 6 though. The only indication is the child of Hudson and Rhondson, Mattison being taken away to Geurdo town as she has reached the age of maturity. However Mattison didn’t exist in BOTW so it depends on when Rhondson got pregnant for the time gap. End of Side note)
Which wouldn’t be a problem if the info Link knew was also shared with us the player. I don’t know, maybe something like Link having a journal or something that we the player can read through as we journey along so we can keep up to date? Or maybe a journal left by Zelda as she’s trying to keep track of history for new history books? Something like that would have helped a lot with this issue. Especially when there’s something like Link’s house in BOTW in now Zelda’s house in TOTK. What happened there? Are they living together? Did Link give the house to Zelda? Did Link not buy the house but Zelda bought it? I don’t know, because the game won’t tell me anything except for the fact that this house is now Zelda’s.
But enough of this, let’s talk more game mechanics now.
5. List of complaints that were improved on (?).
Alright so for this next section I am going to refer to this list of complaints I had for BOTW in my previous write up:
   1. Durability system is wack. I get what they were going for, but it does seem weird that weapons can break so easily and fast.    2. Rain stops all exploring if you need to climb. It’s just not fun.    3. Combat feels slow and clunky. Never really got a hang of it.    4. No passive upgrades to anything except to health and stamina.    5. Dungeons are neat. But way too small and I wish the guardians didn’t speak during them. Just let me bask in a cool place nintendo. Stop talking my ear off.    6. Shrines all feel the same. Also randomly the walls aren’t climbable in shrines? Just put barriers to stop link from climbing on them.    7. No themes in shrines or dungeons. They all look the same. At least the music is different in the dungeons at least.    8. There is no way to see the durability of weapons until it is about to break.    9. You cannot get a full set of hearts and stamina. You will always be missing one. (this might have been fixed in the DLC?)    10. If an enemy can guard your attack then you can’t damage it until you break their stance. Even if they are facing away from you.    11. Koroks... so many koroks... but eh kind of a pro/con situation. Don’t need to worry about getting them all, but at the same time feels so boring getting them.    12. Blood moons. Freaking blood moons. They appear at the worst times.    13. Thunder blight fight. I have no idea why this one fight is so hard compared to the rest. Each blight and including the final boss I beat all on the first try. With thunder blight I died like 15-20 times on. It’s just tough as nails. You need to dodge instantly otherwise you get hit so badly. Like here’s a link to me beating it: click here. It’s by far the hardest boss in the game for me.    14. If something needs to re-charge (master sword, or guardian powers) it needs to fully deplete before re-charging. Which is a bit annoying.
So let’s see what I think about these in TOTK since TOTK is very similar to BOTW.
Immediately numbers 1-4 are basically the exact same. They are issues in both games. But number 5 is interesting. When I played TOTK there are 5 dungeons*. Which is 1 more than BOTW. But the difference is that while BOTW’s dungeons felt like big shrine puzzles. I would say TOTK dungeons feels like proper Zelda dungeons. Heck these are called “temples” in this game too. They might not be the greatest dungeons mind you, since they’re still pretty open and easy to complete. But there are some tougher puzzles and they feel much more Zelda like to me. (*Side note: though I don’t know if there’s another sixth dungeon since I didn’t complete the depths. If there was another one I would think it would be the “shadow temple. But I didn’t find any “shadow temple”, which might be in the depths(?) but honestly that’s a pure shot in the dark, hehe. End of side note)
Number 6 is also still true.
Number 7 is half no longer true. Shrines have the same music and look but are different from BOTW. Meanwhile the dungeons or Temples are very different in themes both visually and musically. They all incorporate some level of “Find X number of things to unlock the boss door”. But they at least look and sound different this time around. They also incorporate different music and you complete different parts of the temple.
Number 8 is still true.
Number 9 is something I can’t tell. The beginning of the game showed Link with a full set of hearts and stamina but that’s not something I know if you can also get in this game. I would assume so. But I have not done that yet so I can’t say for sure.
Number 10-12 are all still true.
Number 13. I had an easy time with all the bosses in BOTW except for thunderblight ganon. But in TOTK I can’t really say I faced the same hardships. Well except for the 2nd Master Kohga fight. But for main bosses I really didn’t have that much issue. That was until the final boss. Ganondorf third phase kicked my ass. But in a good way. It was still frustrating since it forced me to dodge perfectly and then parry to even damage him (which actually makes it a bit worse than thunderblight). But it was the final boss. So it was a nice challenge. (Side note: I found some cheese starts for Ganondorf. If he does a big two-handed attack that you avoid with the paraglider. Use bullet time and arrows on him. Does a decent amount of damage. In his second phase ignore the phantom Ganons. Just go for the big guy himself. In the third phase, try to pinch him near against a wall. When he backflips he doesn’t make a much a distance from you and him and you can get some easy hits in. It was the only way I was going to beat that third phase. End of side note)
And Number 14 is also still true.
So TOTK improved a few areas but it still has a lot of the issues of BOTW.
6. Who knew Nuts and Bolts had good ideas? (Or the new powers in TOTK)
Alright let’s get this one out of the way. Link has new powers in TOTK. I was thinking he would retain the old powers and get some new ones. But nope. He got a whole new bag of tricks of his sleeve this time. Which honestly is a bit shocking to me because I was thinking he was going to at least keep the bomb ability. But even that’s gone. What’s in it’s place is a new plant called a Bomb Flower you can pick up and store in your inventory to later fuse with. Which is really nice to see the bomb flower return in another Zelda game like this. But let’s talk abilities:
   1. Ultrahand: Basically the new magnesis of this game. This one is a bit weaker and can’t push stuff around as much, though it can rotate objects. However that’s not all it can do, because it can also attach objects together. This combined with the new Zonai devices creates the possibilities to create vehicles, automated battle bots, and basically anything you can come up with. It’s really the main crux of new exploration and puzzle solving for this game. And I really like it. Though it does raise the bar for how complex some of the puzzles can definitely be.
   2. Fuse: So this ability allows you to fuse basically any object to your sword or shield that you have equipped. Because of story reasons involved with Ganondorf’s Gloom, all weapons are now weaker. But you can fuse objects on top of other weapons to make them stronger. At first I didn’t use this ability that often. But as time went on I really saw the benefit to using something like this. At the end I was able to make really strong weapons out of boss materials to make weapons in the 30-60 damage range.
   3. Ascend: This ability allows you to ascend throw any solid surface above you that also has a solid surface above it. This allows for a lot of vertical movement.
   4. Recall: This ability allows you to rewind an object’s path up to a certain point. Think of this as TOTK’s version of stasis. But it move’s stuff backwards.
   5. Auto-build: This ability you don’t get in the tutorial area but have to go deep into the depths to obtain it. Basically it’s a recent history of your latest builds using “Ultrahand” or some schematics you have unlocked that you can build using either parts on the ground or by consuming a new resource called zonaite.
So yeah that’s the end of the new abilities. And I really like them. I was expecting the old power and some new ones but I didn’t expect only new ones.
7. Rapid fire list of new things I liked
Alright my stamina for finishing this rambling list of things I want to mention is dwindling so I’ll just rapid fire a numerical list of things I enjoyed.
   1. New sages abilities and they join you in fights after each temple. With the exception of maybe the last sage and Sidon’s abilities. I really enjoyed having the sages by my side as I jouneyed around Hyrule. Even if they got in my way.
   2. Lady Yona. Thank you Nintendo for bringing some new fish love. Honestly I love Lady Yona’s design. It’s so great. Her face is so wide yet so lovable. The fact that she’s also married to Sidon as well is great too. Though I will mention when I first saw Zora’s Domain I went back and forth so much about whether or not I liked where the story was going that I might have caused a small tornado in my apartment.
   3. Purah’s new design. I love it. And so does the internet.
   4. Zelda and Link seem to share way more of a bond in this game than they did in BOTW. So that definitely helps sell me on their romance. Since I definitely didn’t buy it in BOTW.
   5. Ganondorf’s design. Just a great evil tyrant that you want to stop and face against. Such a good villain.
   6. New house building was neat. You can now buy rooms and build a house yourself in anyway you want.
   7. Geoglyph memories. Honestly the memories in this game were so much better for me. Maybe because they all weren’t about how a girl is worried she is going to fail and you already know it. Honestly the big reveal from the memories was pretty shocking to me. I won’t say what it is here, but know I was pleasantly surprised by it. The Geoglyphes were also way easier to find in TOTK since you are given a map early on, if you go looking for it.
   8. Caves are neat and cool to explore through.
   9. The Depths are both a challenge (almost too much) and a sight to behold at times.
   10. The new sky layer of the map is giant as well, though sparse.
   11. TOTK is much more “Zelda Like. It has bomb flowers. Like likes. Gibdos. It’s little things like  these that were missing from BOTW but make this game feel much more like a “Zelda” game to me.
8. Conclusion
So yeah. Lots of long ramblings. I know I complained a lot in this. But hopefully I still got the point across that I really enjoyed TOTK. It definitely isn’t my favorite Zelda of all time. But it’s definitely up there now. BOTW feels so much more like a prelude or tech demo to this game now. It still has charm to it, and playing it will definitely help you feel more attached in TOTK.

Blame @here4dragons and @shyrule. I was given ideas.
So the Chain ends up in a town in Wars Hyrule. And something feels off, but everyone is pretty nice, and it’s fairly peaceful.
Right up until Wars gets drugged in a tavern and there’s an ambush.
Wars misses the end of the fight, but wakes up a captive. And he keeps trying over and over again to escape, and he’s not giving in or telling them anything. No matter what they do, he refuses.
Turns out, the entire town has a grudge against Wars because of the war (what else!), and so they have plans to execute him. So anyways, once he finds that out, he tries to escape even harder, holds out hope that the others will come for him-
Right up until he gets told they’re dead.
He doesn’t believe his captors at first -- lying is a common tactic. But then they bring proof.
Time’s ocarina.
Wind’s pendant.
Four’s earring.
The Master Sword.
It’s this last item that breaks Wars, because he knows Sky would never willingly leave behind the Master Sword. And he’s just… grieving? In shock? Angry? Hurt that his hope was, in a way, misplaced?
He stops trying to escape. What does it matter anymore, now that his brothers are gone? It’s obvious his Hyrule is doing just fine without him — it might even be better off. He doesn’t have any family to return to. It isn’t like its the first time he’s had these thoughts, either- he nearly asked Lana to change time back during the war by making sure he never existed, but was stopped. Now though?
The day of the execution comes, and Wars just… doesn’t care. What’s the point?
He gets taken to the execution stand… forced to his knees… of course the
“He was expecting to feel some sort of pain stand out among all the others, and then nothing.
He wasn’t expecting to get slammed onto his side before being rolled off the platform.”
THAT’S RIGHT BABY. THEY AIN’T DEAD.
Cue an epic rescue scene that Wars doesn’t believe until they’re finally far enough away to stop. And he just-
He can’t believe them. He tells them off all the evidence, they’re dead so does that means he’s dead but they certainly aren’t alive-
Until Sky pulls out the Master Sword. The very real, very emotional Master Sword.
And Wars collapse’s into Time’s arms then and there.

Okay, so I was reading Creating a Champion (the book on BOTW), and it says the fish monument in Zora’s domain was supposed to be representing Jabu-Jabu.
So now I need the Chain landing in Zora’s Domain and Time refusing to go into the throne room, “because the last time I went into a giant fish I ended up engaged to a Zora princess.”
And no one can decide whether or not to believe him.

"When I said knights were weak minded fools, I didn't mean you!" - Legend, to a possessed/mind-controlled Warriors.
"When I said knights were weak minded fools, I didn't mean you!"
Legend took another step back, sword raised higher.
Warriors followed him, eyes red. The slash on his arm pulsed a grotesque purple red, partially dying his hair nearly black.
"Warriors! Snap out of it!" He shouted.
"Traitors... must be... stopped."
His friend's voice was warped, odd and dark.
"Come on, Pretty Boy! Snap out of it!"
There was no answer.
"Alrighty then," Legend muttered.
He shifted, getting ready to fight. Warriors did the same, holding his sword up in a defensive position.
Perfect.
He'd sparred with Warriors before.
He knew his weak points.
Including the fact that Warriors always fell for feints to his blind side.
Legend feinted. Warriors moved to intercept. Legend twisted, pulled his sword under-
And hit the slash on Warriors' arm.
His sword wasn't quite as powerful as Sky's- too many years had passed, too much magic had been lost.
But it was still the Master Sword.
Warriors let out a warped shriek, and fell to the ground. Legend lunged, and covered the rest of the wound with his sword. Warriors let out another yell, sounding more like himself, and went absolutely boneless on the ground. His hair become blonde again, his eyes blue
Legend let relief fill him, just for a moment.
"Legend?" Warriors groaned.
"Hush," Legend said, pulling out a roll of bandages.
"Legend I'm sorry, I'm so sorry-"
"Hey! Snap out of it. It's not your fault you got hit with a malice infected sword."
"Legend-"
"No. Stop it."
"I'm sorry," Warriors whispered.
Legend's hands shook as he tied off the bandage.
"I know."
