I think that one year for his birthday when she was a kid, Alice got Bill a “Best Dad In The World” mug that she made herself with a white IKEA mug and multi-colored Sharpies (Paul probably took her out to get craft things around the same time). She thinks that Bill got rid of it a while ago because she never sees it in the cupboards when she’s over, but he keeps it in his office all the time to hold pens and pencils. Most of the letters are faded and scratched a little, but it’s still his favorite mug.

@the-story-of-the-tucks and i have come up with a thousand and one alfred-lives aus, including a hadestown au, but i think jasper in deadland would suit better for an abh au! (to be clear this is abh characters following the arc of jasper in deadland, not vice versa) i love how hadestown interprets the myth of orpheus and eurydice as a story of trust & love & tragedy & cycles, but jasper in deadland’s take on the theme of the myth (trust in your loved one & don’t look back) interacts nicely with abh’s themes of growing up & speaking up. despite alice’s begging & bargaining & denial, alfred (agnes) has died and gone to the afterlife/deadland/wonderland, but she hasn’t given up. mr lethe’s (or whoever the au equivalent would be) argument about how people are awful and it’s everyone for themselves would be emphasized by alice suffering through wwii and seeing a lot of cruelty & violence, and i think “lifesong” would Hit Different. alfred talking about “something for real” isn’t just about his/agnes’ dissatisfaction with life but also the way he and alice have coded their feelings for each other through stories and he’s not ready to follow her back to Life if they have to keep that up. 

also! it’s really cute to imagine their first meeting with alice being like “alfred? what���s your real first name-- oh, it’s *alfred.* haha anyway i’m new in town and i have no friends, wanna hang out? :D” and alfred’s like ....okay :)
