The Good Earth
May the moon become your lantern,
the stars enflame your mind,
the wind discard your worries,
and the sun be ever kind.
May the ocean share its bounty,
the forest give you shade,
the fields fill your pantry
with food the earth has made.
I cannot speak for creatures
and humans most of all,
but nature seems most generous
by means both great and small.

Nevertheless, She Persisted. It’s a phrase that’s taken social media by storm; it’s being embroidered on pillows and etched on coffee mugs—it’s also the theme of this year’s Women’s History Month. In honor of all the women who have embodied the phrase and in support of all the women who will continue to, hoopla has curated collections featuring influential women. Celebrate Women’s History Month with music, film, and literature titles by and about the women of yesterday, today, and tomorrow! This ridiculously badly researched #anthology of #novels and #places should be titled “An Anglophile’s View of The World and how every novel about China, Asia and Anywhere but the UK has to be written by someone from the UK.” Examples include #TheGoodEarth by #PearlSBuck and #AnArtistOfTheFloatingWorld by #KazuoIshiguro and more and more. The Good Earth - Pearl S. Buck (1931) ❤️❤️❤️💔 Pearl S. Buck is a Nobel prize winning author, and reading The Good Earth makes it clear why this is. Following the story of the family of Wang Lung, a poor farmer, who dreams of one day owning land, his own, and more, The Good Earth introduces the reader to pre-revolutionary China. As the fortunes of the wealthiest family in town fail, Wang Lung takes every opportunity to advance his, eventually becoming owner of the land and position he so coveted. Buck's lyrical writing is beautiful, and the reader feels a part of this world so far removed from our own. A world with concubines, and multiple marriages, a world where the binding of feet was a mark of status, a world where sons and daughters are developed into the positions they will hold in life by their father's will. To me, the greatest humanity in the book stems from Wang Lung's relationship with his daughter, referred to as The Poor Fool. Weaving a tapestry of family life, a society gone by, the importance of a land of one's own, and the effect that such a large discrepancy between the rich and the poor have on a civilization, The Good Earth is an amazing read. 356 pages #thegoodearth #pearlsbuck #china #1931 #nobelprize #fiction #novel #generations #family #land #prerevolution #dynasty #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #bookclub #bookclubofinstagram #classicliterature #readinglife #readinglist #classiclit #read #book #bestseller #kalidesautelsreads

The Good Earth (Book Review: Part II)
My opinion on the main characters of the book...
Wang Lung: following your average rags-to-riches storyline, this farmer starts off with nothing but a small piece of land and his aging father who he must care for. Then, he buys his first wife O-Lan and from that point on his life story is completely defined by the people who surround him.
O-Lan: Everyone wants a wife like O-lan. She cooks, cleans, can build furniture out of literal dirt (what a way to save money), births children like a boss (after her first birth she literally goes back to farming afterwards), somehow knows the best way to beg for money and build a hut out of sleeping pads (even though she grew up in a palace no where near a city and obvi had no access to YouTube tutorials), and never complains about anything. She is what I imagine is the ideal (Chinese) woman stereotype and when push comes to shove she is the one who brings Wang Lung from rags to riches when she is able to use her past experiences living in a palace to discover hidden jewels during the middle of a riot of a different palace. However, for most of the book Wang Lung can only see her as just his ugly first wife since her feet are big (not bound), and since she is quiet she assumes she is dumb (though clearly her actions show otherwise). He later is able to somewhat recognize her as a positive in his life, but its way too little too late.
1st son: Stereotypical lazy rich kid
2nd son: Stereotypical smarter rich kid
1st daughter (Poor Fool): In this time period, females were called slaves. Lets just says China was down with the feminists. Wang Lung originally simply considered her an extra mouth to feed, and the description of her birth was incredibly bleak and full of bad omens. After her brothers were born, the land was fruitful, but instead drought followed her entrance to the story. She almost starved to death multiple times as an infant and we expect this is why she ends up “slow”.  Wang Lung original hatred towards the Poor Fool is almost instantly converted to pity as soon as he lays eyes on her. Over time, however, this pity is morphed into true love. This character must have been extremely novel for the time period this was written in, because even today you rarely read about characters of mental illness in this light. I read somewhere that the Poor Fool was based on Pearl S. Buck’s actual daughter. That makes a lot of sense because the relationship between this character and her father is written so beautifully.
Ching: The male version of O-lan except he was never “bought,” but is simply Wang Lung’s best mate. He takes the extra wealth (found by O-lan) and is able to sustain it through his farming brilliance. Unlike O-lan, Wang Lung respects this character (probably because he is a man) for the most part throughout the novel though his children (specifically his first son) do not since they still consider him a servant. The sadness of Ching’s loyalty is when Wang Lung does take this friendship for granted, but we have all been there. It sucks. Best friends are awesome.
The twins: These characters best display the sexism of the society since one twin is male and the other is female. The female twin is not yet an adult when her cousin attempts to rape her and Wang Lung sells her to a husband to “protect” her. The only fact we know about her was that O-lan bound her feet and told her she needed to do this so that her future husband would love her. The girl told this to Wang Lung which made him feel pity for O-lan since he had not known that she knew he thought she was ugly. However, he continues to let O-lan bind the girls feet because he is a sexist pig. This is his only daughter that is able to be independent and he sends her off to be a wife before she is old enough to make her own decisions. On the other hand, while he originally decides that the male twin will become his prodigy, the boy grow up and decides he wants Wang Lung to pay for him to study. Wang Lung does. Then when the son decides to join the army instead of be a scholar, Wang Lung eventually concedes to that too. Basically the boy twin does whatever he wants and the girl twin got nothing.
The uncle and his wife: Don’t do drugs kids!
The uncle’s son: A misogynist pig who probably needed better parenting or something because his behavior towards women was horrid. At least Wang Lung paid for his women....
Lotus and Cuckoo: Cuckoo is originally a higher-class servant in the same palace where O-lan grew up, She later is the pimp at the tea house where  Wang Lung falls in love with the prostitute, Lotus. Lotus becomes Wang Lung’s second wife and bring Cuckoo with her. Both Cuckoo and Lotus are a bit greedy, but they share in each others’ (Wang Lung’s) wealth. They are interesting women in that they are able to profit off the messed up social structure that they live in. Lotus does this through mostly her beauty, but Cuckoo is able to do it through her wit and marketing of herself to both Lotus and Wang Lung.
Pear Blossom: This girl, a bit younger than the twins, originally is bought by Wang Lung as a slave during a time of drought. He saves her from starvation by putting her to work. The uncle’s son wants to buy her as his wife, but she throws a temper tantrum to not be sold to him.  he boy twin wants her too, but Wang Lung falls in love with her. She also confesses her “love” for Wang Lung because she said older men make her feel safer. In this social structure, Pear Blossom is right. In US society, this relationship would be gross, but she is probably safer as his widow than as the wife of either of these young boys. Her decision may not seem natural, but it would in the book’s society.  To show her gratitude, she chooses to look after  the Poor Fool after Wang Lung passes.
