Work has been crazy busy so my brain is a bit mush but yay for overtime! Anyway I don’t normally read scary books mostly because my dreams are crazy enough as it is and then to add in scary stuff...well my imagination goes crazy and the nightmares are not fun to say the least!! While this book isn’t really scary, I enjoyed how it made me question everything around me!! Like is that person actually an evil demon or just a regular person?! Just in case I haven’t raved about this series enough, here is another post about their brilliance!! I love the mix of regency and fantasy so much and I really like how @alisongoodmanauthor has written Lady Helen - a kick-ass female in a time when women were mostly decorative... it is rather difficult to fight demons and maintain socially acceptable standards of female propriety... . The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman: Review re-uploaded

Reminder: this is an old review from my previous blog. 

Greetings and Salutations everyone! It has been quite a long time and I have let you all down by not writing my reviews as I have promised. But I’m back, hopefully for good, and with another review. I just finished this book last night so everything is fresh. Let’s get to it.

Synopsis:

The Dark Days Club is the story about a young girl in Regency era England. It’s during the pivotal moment in England where they are at war with Napoleon Bonaparte and are about to be at war with America, so 1812. Lady Helen Wrexhall is orphaned and has been living with her aunt and uncle, Lord and Lady Pennworth, for ten years and she is about to be presented to the queen as an eligible woman in society. But then strange things begin to happen. A housemaid goes missing, a suspected murderer comes back to society and sets his eyes on Helen, and strange instances begin to happen to Helen. Secrets about herself and her mother begin to come to the surface and she has to choose between a life she is destined to live or the life that she has been wanting.

Review:

Overall, this book was pretty good. It was very slow at first due to the author needing to introduce the characters and introduce the readers to the rules of the society and to set up the events that lead to the main plot of the story. It takes 200 pages for everything that happened to start to make sense and for the story to start picking up. After 200 pages, the story is a lot easier to read and I flew through the rest of the book. It was not the best book I’ve read but it was good enough to pull me in and make me want to continue on in the series or trilogy (a third one is being written but I don’t know if that’s the last one or not).

I did have issues with the supernatural aspects of the book because it doesn’t make sense to me. I’m not going to go into it because it will give a lot away but the supernatural elements were unnecessarily difficult. By that I mean that you need a special lens to see the supernatural creatures but then you can’t use the lens to fight them because the lenses are made with metal and metal will react badly to the energy and explode so they have to fight blindly things like that. Also there is more of the creatures than there are of the people who fight them which is a bit ridiculous.

There was also a few times when Helen gets in trouble with her uncle and she doesn’t give him any excuses or explanations that could easily get her out of trouble and then gets punished. Like there was an event she wasn’t supposed to go to and she ends up getting chased into the crowd and was recognized and she could have easily have told them that she was being chased (an excuse she used to two strangers so they would help her escape an alley) but she doesn’t so she gets in trouble with her uncle. That happened a lot in the story and that irked me.

Despite those issues, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book. The writing was done really well and the historical factors in the story were accurate. The story was both action packed and intriguing. The author did a wonderful job of piquing the reader’s interest enough to make them keep reading and then giving them little bits of information but not too much so that they will keep reading. Each time that a question was answered there was more questions given which kept me wanting to know more. I still have a lot of questions left even after finishing the first book and so I am moving on to The Dark Days Pact. I give this book 4/5 stars on Goodreads.

11 Dec 2017. Favourite fantasy reads of 2017? I feel like I didn’t read as much fantasy this year as I usually would, but these are a couple of the standouts.
