✍️To all fic writers:
Just want to shout out to y’all, and say if u ever get any mean comments/anon hate…. There are people out there that will literally criticize ANYTHING.
Take this article from the Hollywood Reporter for example:
It’s a review of Seb Stan in Picnic. The reviewer is less than impressed. Here is the entirety of his “criticism”:
Tumblr media
LOL what?????
Tumblr media
So many questions here…
1.) How close was this guy to the stage?
if I see a buff person, I’m just going to assume they have the average 6-pack abs unless they are like, super shredded and dehydrated.
but apparently this critic wanted to get the exact number???
Also… the reviewer throws shade at the director’s intentions later on but like, I’m not sure he’s doing that in good faith bc I’m pretty sure the director’s intentions were for ppl to spend more time watching the play and less time counting the number of abs on the actor? Anyway…
2.) How is this relevant to the theatre experience?
who’s being evaluated here? Seb Stan or his abs?
Is the reviewer saying the abs weren’t realistic enough for that time period and therefore ruined the entire portrayal of that character?
how is this immersion breaking enough to justify a mention in the review?
We are talking about abdominal muscles here ok??? Not like a Starbucks cup just chillin on the table in Westeros
3.) How can u tell what century the abs came from and the method by which they were acquired???
Does this guy look at Michelangelo’s sculpture of David and say
🧐 Those are some 16th century abs that clearly just stepped out of a field where this man works hard herding sheep everyday
If so, maybe he’s in the wrong profession??
Maybe instead of a theatre critic he should be on some CSI forensic team, providing ab analysis like a scientist carbon dating fossils.
Or he should be one of those carnival guys that guesses your age or weight, except he’ll tell you how your abs come to be in their current state
“oh I see your one pack abs…. These are definitely just from laughing at YouTube videos all day and the occasional set of sit-ups”
🙄🙄🙄
Tumblr media
So yeah, haters gonna hate I guess lmao 🤷‍♀️

Let's talk about Miss Charlie Bucket
I feel like this post is opening a whole can of controversial worms, and that makes me uncomfortable. I know it shouldn’t though, in a land of free speech and open minds. I even know that I myself am often pushing and advocating for people’s dreams to not be limited by the societal boundaries of gender. Let me not fall into a rabbit hole of awkward shuffling and excuse mumbling. Earlier this…

Welcome To My Blog!
Hellooo,
My name is Charlie and I love theatre quite a bit. From the age of four I started watching plays and going into London to experience new writing. With stuff ranging from Historical Plays all the way to Comedy Musicals I have always had a passion for watching theatre and forming opinions on it.
So now I found tumblr I thought..
You know what, why don't I just write my own review. An honest review that isn't foreshadowed by other reviews from the press and is completely my opinion.
So yeah, there you go. This is my blog, expect new posts every week and a lot of reviews to read.

Wizard of Oz The Musical Review (Theatre Reviews) (Reviews)
Date & Time of Production: 17th April 2024 at 7:00 pm
Date & Time of Review: 17th April 2024 at 9:00 pm
Review by @warrenwoodhouse
It was a fantastic night and a wonderful cast. The musical was full of charm, whimsical moments, great set designs, lovely costumes and full of great songs. The lights and music gave a different perspective on the entire story in a narrative manner too. Some really good puppetry work was on stage as well.
I felt such joy seeing people in the audience singing along to some of the big numbers and laughing along. The video backdrops enhanced some of the story too.
It all ended with a standing ovation from the entire audience. Was a fantastic night and not one to miss. Would gladly watch it again if it came back to the #TheatreRoyal #TheatreRoyalNewcastle.

Moving and powerful theatre for our troubled times. Review: I, Daniel Blake at Royal and Derngate, Northampton.
By Karin Johnstone “I am not a client, a customer, nor a service user. I am not a shirker, a scrounger, a beggar, nor a thief. I’m not a National Insurance Number or blip on a screen. I paid my dues, never a penny short, and proud to do so.” So states the eponymous Daniel Blake. Kathy and Daisy, played by Bryony Corrigan and Jodie Wild – All photography by Pamela Raith Seven years have passed…

Show 2: Chris Grace as Scarlett Johannson
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect going into this show, and although I ultimately enjoyed it, I found myself confused at times. The show builds itself up in layers - Chris is himself, then himself playing Scarlett, then Scarlett playing himself playing Scarlett, and so on and so on until the lines blur completely in the second half. As an exploration of racism and the failures of Hollywood casting, the show is sensitive and thought provoking - however, as a comedy show, it does fall flat near the end as it becomes more and more self-referential. The show shines best when Chris is himself, and I’d love to have seen more of that - his anecdotes are excellently delivered, and he’s able to connect with the audience, building rightful tension while also diffusing it every so often. It’s a shame this often becomes lost in the many many wigs and awkward dance sequences.
Rating: 3/5

Newsies Review
Review of Newsies watched at the Troubadour Theatre, Wembley on the 14th May 2023. A Disney and Runaway Entertainment Production. Directed and choreographed by Matt Cole, designed by Morgan Large, with music supervision by Nigel Lilley.
‘Newsies?’ More like ‘no thank you.’
For a production funded and produced by Disney, I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed. There’s no point beating round the bush… I couldn’t wait for the show to end. Where did Newsies go wrong? Where didn’t they go wrong would be more apt.
Musically, it just didn’t make sense. For a majority (if not all) of the musical numbers it seemed like the company were singing something different to what the orchestra were playing.  One number sounded as if all the company were singing something different to each other ‘’let’s all improvise and see if anyone notices’’. We did. Credit to the few songs that sounded ‘Sondheim-esque’ and evoked a taste of the late-great composer. Sadly, they were few and far between, and the ones that did crop up felt like they’d been composed by a B&M Bargains-Sondheim (a reference to a UK discount shop for my international readers!) rather than the real deal. Maybe it’s because everything sounded tinny and echoey, maybe that’s the reason I didn’t like the numbers. Or maybe it’s because the songs weren’t good, I’m open to suggestions.
An Olivier Award for best choreography in the bag, ‘‘the dancing must be fantastic’’ I hear you say. Well, it is for the first five minutes anyway, past this point it all becomes very repetitive. I was aching for a tap-dance in the first act (as a tap-dancer myself I’m very partial to a tap-routine) when we got to said tap-dance in the second act… well I’ll leave it at that. I can’t help but think that the choreography, overall, needed calming down. With too many people on stage it became very hard to locate the focal point of the scene, with a bit of tightening up a lot of choreographic muddles could have been sorted out.
Unfortunately, the script, the fight scenes and the performances all added to my misery. I won’t single performers out, that wouldn’t be right, I will say there were no standout performances and a few people that perplex me as to how they got through auditions. It didn’t feel like a professionally produced piece of theatre, more a final showcase at a drama school, highly embarrassing when you consider some tickets going for £106.
Scenically, the Troubadours been transformed, certainly evoking a New York Suburb. For the most part though the set design was uninspiring: a messy, moving, metal framework transporting us from location to location. Wheely tables and bentwood chairs (I hate bentwood chairs with a passion!) brought on for scenes in restaurants. Again, nothing spectacular, more drama school showcase. The few times where people ziplined in and swung about on ropes (for no apparent reason) did little to add to my enjoyment and surprisingly had the opposite affect working only to enrage me.
I could go on, but I think I’ve said enough. Really bad all throughout. In the end Newsies gets a wombat rating of:
1 Wombat 'It was awful'
Thanks for reading, The Wombat's Opinion

I understand that literature nerd Jason Todd is kind of overblown in fanon compared to it's actual presence in canon (a few issues during his pre (and post?)crisis Robin tenure that highlight it) BUT consider that I think it's hilarious if the unhinged gun toting criminal has strong opinions on poetry
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#Jason Todd#batfamily#it's just a fun quirk! it's a fun lil detail and I simply cannot slight ppl for enjoying and incorporating it into works#like obviously jason isn't the only one. I'm a big believer in the batfam having over lapping interests they refuse to bond over#i know dick canonically used the robin hood stories (which are pretty flowery in their language far as i can tell) as inspo for Robin#and i know babs was a librarian and even tho her area of nerddom is characterized as more computery she probably knows quite a lot-#-about literature as well#duke is a hobbyist writer i believe? i saw a fan mention that- which if so is great and I hope he's also a nerd#(i mean he is canonically. i remember him being a puzzle nerd in his introduction. but i mean specifically a lit nerd)#damian called Shakespeare boring but also took acting classes so i think he's more of a theatre kid.#Tim's a dropout and i don't think he's ever shown distinct interest in english lit and i can't remember for Steph?#I'm ngl my brain hyperfocused on musician Steph i forget some of her other interests I'm sorry (minus softball and gymnastics!)#and then Cass had her whole (non linear but it's whatevs) arc about literacy and learning to read#went from struggling to read in batgirl 00 to memorizing Shakespeare in 'tec and is now an avid read in batgirls!#she's shown reading edgar allen poe but we don't know if it's his short stories or his poems#point to all of the above being: i know Jason's not the only lit nerd in the batfam#but also i do need him to be writing poetry in his spare time and reading and reviewing it#jason at the next dead robins society meeting: evening folks today I'll be assigning all of us poems based on laika the space dog#damian and steph who have been kidnapped and brought to jasons warehouse to hangout: LET US GO BITCH#speaking of^ random poem i think jason would like: space dog by alan shapiro#wake up one morning in an unfamiliar more mature body with a profound sense of abandonment. the last four lines. mmm tasty
