I understand that literature nerd Jason Todd is kind of overblown in fanon compared to it's actual presence in canon (a few issues during his pre (and post?)crisis Robin tenure that highlight it) BUT consider that I think it's hilarious if the unhinged gun toting criminal has strong opinions on poetry

I'm a big believer in the batfam having over lapping interests they refuse to bond over #i know dick canonically used the robin hood stories (which are pretty flowery in their language far as i can tell) as inspo for Robin #and i know babs was a librarian and even tho her area of nerddom is characterized as more computery she probably knows quite a lot-#-about literature as well #duke is a hobbyist writer i believe? i saw a fan mention that- which if so is great and I hope he's also a nerd #(i mean he is canonically. i remember him being a puzzle nerd in his introduction. but i mean specifically a lit nerd)#damian called Shakespeare boring but also took acting classes so i think he's more of a theatre kid.#Tim's a dropout and i don't think he's ever shown distinct interest in english lit and i can't remember for Steph?#I'm ngl my brain hyperfocused on musician Steph i forget some of her other interests I'm sorry (minus softball and gymnastics!)#and then Cass had her whole (non linear but it's whatevs) arc about literacy and learning to read #went from struggling to read in batgirl 00 to memorizing Shakespeare in 'tec and is now an avid read in batgirls!#she's shown reading edgar allen poe but we don't know if it's his short stories or his poems #point to all of the above being: i know Jason's not the only lit nerd in the batfam #but also i do need him to be writing poetry in his spare time and reading and reviewing it #jason at the next dead robins society meeting: evening folks today I'll be assigning all of us poems based on laika the space dog #damian and steph who have been kidnapped and brought to jasons warehouse to hangout: LET US GO BITCH #speaking of^ random poem i think jason would like: space dog by alan shapiro #wake up one morning in an unfamiliar more mature body with a profound sense of abandonment. the last four lines. mmm tasty

you romanticize the theatre rehearsal– you love the idea of bloodied shakespeare traded from desperate palm to desperate palm, you dream of the sweat dripping from a dancer's brow like the sun glinting off the sea, but in between all of this imaginary want, you miss the whole point.

you miss the clutter of foldable tables holding laptops and open scripts and the rind of an orange, four empty water bottles and six uncapped pens. two rings of keys and one folded up piece of my notebook paper that represents a letter prop. you miss our running document of silly things people have said in the heat of the moment and you miss the hundred clarifying questions that are asked. you miss the hunger in everyone's eyes, the want, the need, the lust. the unspoken something between my eyes and the boy i love to make laugh– you miss the way he's like that with everyone who has the pleasure to come him across, and i can't bring myself to particularly mind.

and you know what? you do miss the bone-chilling scream of a man who's eyes are ripp'd from his traitor skull (the vocal-conscious yell of a grad actor with voice and speech tomorrow morning), the sharp lines drawn between two bodies moving against the grain of a tango. you miss the magic that settles in-between the creased brow of a determined designer and you miss the silent cheering folded behind a heavy black curtain when the tricky scene change goes exactly as we put it to paper. you miss it. you miss everything, when you aren't here.

but tonight, i'm here, and i'll explain exactly what it all means. i hike my skirt up above my calves and i swiftly collect the rehearsal props littered around the room; someone yells "I'm not a fucking liar!" and we're supposed to be running King Lear. the animosity from blind father to vengeful son never bleeds into our equity 10-minute breaks. we all tune in, for just a moment, and we all feel the same damn thing run through our bones. it's the same, it's the same, we're the same. we to you to me to us to them to zip to zap to zop.

I want to learn to write so I can bring all my fantasy stories to life. I want to learn poetry because it sounds like a rap but a bit more beautiful. I want to learn how to animate so I bring all my super cool sports action scenes to life. I want to learn photography because when the sun hits the clouds a certain way they look like cotton candy. I want to learn rendering so I can upgrade my artstyle. I want to learn history so I can learn about how people lived in the past. I want to learn to learn how to embroidery so I can make patches and sew them to a black denim jacket. I want to learn to skate because people who can skate are hot and also I could go really fast. I want to learn pottery because people who do pottery are hot and also I want to make a bird feeder. I want to learn to sing so when I try to do Dear Evan Hansen and Wicked and Beetlejuice and Heathers I can put all the emotions I feel when I listen to the songs into my voice. I want to learn how to sew so I can fix clothing and make my own clothes. I want to learn how to paint so I can make beautiful watercolor paintings. I want to learn how to skateboard because people who skate are hot and it just looks really fun. I want to learn how to ice skate because people who can skate are hot and it’s something I haven’t quite mastered yet. I want to learn to tend to plants so I can make my own garden with birds and butterflies. I want to learn digital painting so I can make prints. I just want to learn.
