For World Teachers Day: The One Who Changed My Life the Most
I swiped this particularly fabulous and glamorous photo of my high school theatre teacher off of social media. I hope she doesn’t mind, for it makes her look like a movie star. Her name is Diane McNeil. Her surname was Falk or Faulk when I first started taking classes with her in 1979; later she married a Scotsman named Duncan. Falk means “falcon” in German and its sister language Yiddish. As…

Cheffing and Cooking in Education
As a #TeachingArtist, I was a #chef but my jobs kept trying to make me a #cook. That's one of the reasons I #quit. There's a big difference. #ArtsEducation #theatre #education
It’s been a while since I’ve been in a classroom but an interview about my time at BAM and a journey through some old files have gotten me thinking about it some. It feels like I miss it a little bit and I’ve been trying to work out what part of it is still calling to me. I’m not nostalgic for being in a classroom. I suppose I miss being with the students some but I don’t miss the toxic…

two questions to ask yourself when you start looking for pre-christian material in medieval literature:
1. when are these texts from
2. when did christianity come to this area
i can guarantee you in the vast majority of celtic-language sources (and others) the answer to 2. is several centuries before 1. and at that point you gotta ask yourself... how likely is it that these people would be writing about something that has not been a thing for them or anyone they know for, like, four hundred years (or, in many cases, eight or nine hundred years), especially given that most of the people doing that writing are not merely passively existing in a christian society but are, yunno, monks
there are exceptions! but there are way fewer exceptions than you think there are gonna be! and the exceptions are almost always extremely nebulous sub layers that can't be disentangled from the other layers (which are christian) with any certainty so are always somewhat speculative!
and most importantly those other layers are interesting too, but if you only ever treat them like dirt to dig through to get to something "real" underneath you're sure gonna be disappointed a lot of the time (and you're gonna miss a lot of cool shit that would be really exciting if this was an actual archaeological dig and not a metaphor)!!

Stevie Ray Dallimore, an actor and teacher, had been running the theater program for a private boys’ school in Chattanooga for a decade, but he never faced a school year like this one.
A proposed production of “She Kills Monsters” at a neighboring girls’ school that would have included his students was rejected for gay content, he said. A “Shakespeare in Love” at the girls’ school that would have featured his boys was rejected because of cross-dressing. His school’s production of “Three Sisters,” the Chekhov classic, was rejected because it deals with adultery and there were concerns that some boys might play women, as they had in the past, he said.

an unfortunately really really frustrating part about seeing different companies/organisations/etc try to be more trans inclusive is that even if they're actually doing a great job, its fucking depressing to see how people need to be formally trained on how to treat me with respect. i'm reading this article right now about how theatre companies are trying to be trans-friendly and how people actually needed to like. take classes and talk to experts and get all this gender stuff explained to them in order to have an accepting workplace, meanwhile it's all things that i know about because they are the most basic aspects of my everyday life. its so fucking tiring

"The head of Helsinki City Theatre, the director of the musical Kari Arffman says that it's not the job of theatre to educate the audience by tackling difficult themes, but the theatre can incite people to take action in their own daily lives.
- If someone, after seeing [Dear Evan Hansen] asks another how they're really doing, then that's important."
-----
It's not the job of the theatre to tackle difficult topics?!?!? Guess that explains why HCT has been staging the blandest musicals to ever bland for the past few years ajlgsähksälfsä

In Praise of the Monologue
I used to swear up and down that I hated #monologues. I have changed my tune. And not just because I wrote a bunch of them. #TheatreTraining #theatre #actors #TheatreEducation
Despite having written and created an audio drama podcast made up entirely of monologues, before now, I’d have told you I hated monologues. When casting actors, I would never ask for a monologue for the audition. I felt sure they could tell me nothing about what an actor would do in a show. I know I have delivered a few rants on the subject before. I could not fathom why preparing one classical…
