May 2023 Reading Wrap-Up
Happy summer! My semester is wrapped up and I'm finishing some time at home, but I'll be back to work as June gets underway. I'm doing quite a bit of traveling in July, so I have a lot to get done before that. But I've been taking things pretty easy this month which means lots of time for reading--14 books and about 4,800 pages! Here's the breakdown:
Hunted by the Sky (The Wrath of Ambar #1) by Tanaz Bhathena- 2.75/5 stars
The Castle School (for Troubled Girls) by Alyssa Sheinmel- 3.25/5 stars
African Europeans: An Untold History by Olivette Otele
Harrow the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #2) by Tamsyn Muir- 3.5/5 stars
All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir- 4.25/5 stars
A Natural History of Dragons (The Memoirs of Lady Trent #1) by Marie Brennan- 5/5 stars
The Tropic of Serpents (The Memoirs of Lady Trent #2) by Marie Brennan- 4.5/5 stars
The Conductors (Murder and Magic #1) by Nicole Glover- 3.5/5 stars
Beowulf: A New Translation by Anonymous, translated by Maria Dahvana Headley- 1/5 stars
Spectres of Antiquity: Classical Literature and the Gothic, 1740-1830 by James Uden
Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust- 4.75/5 stars
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster- 3/5 stars
Tyll by Daniel Kehlmann- 3.25/5 stars
The Box in the Woods (Truly Devious #4) by Maureen Johnson- 4/5 stars
My favorite book this month was A Natural History of Dragons (I'm really looking forward to picking up the rest of the series!), but I also enjoyed Girl, Serpent, Thorn a lot more than I was expecting.
Currently Reading: The City of Dusk (The Dark Gods #1) by Tara Sim and Classic Ghost Stories

So when a group of rebel women called the Sisters of the Golden Lotus rescue her, take her in, and train her in warrior magic, Gul wants only one thing: revenge.Cavas lives in the tenements, and he's just about ready to sign his life over to the king's army. His father is terminally ill, and Cavas will do anything to save him. But sparks fly when he meets a mysterious girl--Gul--in the capital's bazaar, and as the chemistry between them undeniably grows, he becomes entangled in a mission of vengeance--and discovers a magic he never expected to find.Dangerous circumstances have brought Gul and Cavas together at the king's domain in Ambar Fort . . . a world with secrets deadlier

Book Recommendation #1
Tumblr media
Goodreads | Book 1 Book 2 | Tanaz Bhathena
The Wrath Of Ambar Duology by Tanaz Bhathena is one of my most favourite YA fantasy series' ever!! This book series is set an Indian (& Persian) culture and Hindu mythology inspired world, and it is UNPUTDOWNABLE!
There is a distinct lack of books that are *not* retellings of the Mahabharata when it comes to books which take inspiration from Hindu Mythology, and to find this series when I was getting incredibly frustrated with Indian-inspired fiction was a boon, honestly!
Bhathena does an incredible job of building a world that's complex and does not shy away from talking about the more cruel parts of Indian culture. She touches on the atrocities of the cast system and the rampant misogyny, but at the same time, she does not demonize the "common man" as it were. Everyone has a responsiblity to be receptive to change, but the government has a duty to bring that change about, and this book does a great job of showing how sometimes governements keep opppressive systems in place for their own gain.
While all this political and social commentary is heavy and present throughout, there is also some really fun banter, a sweet romance and a very interesting magic system in this series! The story is pretty much your standard Chosen One narrative, but it really did not get the least bit boring for me! Not because of the plot itself, but because the setting and the characters make it so engaging that you just want to keep reading!
Bhathena has talked about how she took inspiration from The Gulabi Gang for the group of all-female rebels in this book called The Sisterhood of the Golden Lotus. Which is like. HELLO??? These women are The Coolest™ part of this series and I adore them so much!!!
I definitely liked the first book more, mostly because it is a story that's character driven and it lets you explore Ambar as a setting and ~feel~ it out a little. The sequel is very plot-intensive and super fast paced, and I felt a little disconnected to all these characters I had grown to love for a good quarter of the book. It didn't dampen the enjoyment of the series that much for me, but it did feel like a little step down from the first book, so....you know.
Overall, though, this series made for a super enjoyable reading experience and made me feel all warm inside because it had characters who looked like me and dressed like me and ate like me in it!! I genuinely forgot that I was reading a book in English, tbvh. Like I'd read a very angrezi word and then realize that 'oh, wait, this isn't hindi!' That's how immersive it was!!!
LASTLY, WOULD YOU LOOK AT THOSE COVERS, HELLO???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I A M D E C E A S E D)
Definitely pick this lovely series up if you're someone interested in Young Adult fiction because you're gonna have a great time! Also hmu if you've read and/or are reading these books and would like to scream about events etc.,
Rising Like A Storm releases on the 22nd of June, 2021. Links to purchase Hunted By The Sky and pre-order Rising Like A Storm from book depository are up there, if you're interested!
PS: Do NOT read that first book when you're hungry because there is a lot of decadent Indian food described and it will make you want to just eat the book.
CWs: mentions of physical and sexual abuse, torture, death, mild gore, panic attacks, PTSD, casteist and misogynistic violence.
South Asian book recommendations (1/?)
I've been thinking about posting some book related content here for a while now so I just decided to kick things off with a recommendation series featuring books I would like for more people to read! So here we are! I hope you guys find a new favourite or two from this series! we'll see how it goes! Have a good one, y'all! Happy reading! ✨

Series:
1. Hunted by the Sky
In the concluding installment to the Wrath of Ambar duology from masterful author Tanaz Bhathena, Gul and Cavas must unite their magical forces―and hold onto their growing romance―to save their kingdom from tyranny.
With King Lohar dead and a usurper queen in power, Gul and Cavas face a new tyrannical government that is bent on killing them both. Their roles in King Lohar's death have not gone unnoticed, and the new queen is out for blood. What she doesn't know is that Gul and Cavas have a connection that runs deeper than romance, and together, they just might have the strength and magic to end her for good.
Then a grave mistake ends with Cavas taken prisoner by the government. Gul must train an army of warriors alone. With alliances shifting and the thirst for vengeance growing, the fate of Ambar seems ever more uncertain. It will take every ounce of strength, love, and sacrifice for Gul and Cavas to reach their final goal―and build a more just world than they've ever known.

Note
taking you up on the indian fantasies, give recs please
yes okay lets go
the burning kingdoms trilogy by tasha suri is probably my favourite indian fantasy, though only the first book, the jasmine throne is out right now, (book 2 comes this august). it follows a princess who's imprisoned because she refuses to step into a pyre to sacrifice herself for the ~good of the country~ and a maidservant who possesses forbidden magic. the magic system and the worldbuilding here is *chefs kiss* and oh, also, it's sapphic! the pacing bothered some people, but i didn't mind it.
also by the same author is the books of ambha duology. i have only read the first book here, because the second book follows a different character on her own journey, which i wasn't interested in. its set in a mughal inspired world, where the amrithi people are outcasts and nomads with magic in their blood, and mehr is the illegitimate daughter of a governor and an amrithi woman who has to hide to hide her powers before the emperor finds out. it sounds generic, but it isn't i promise you.
i finished the ivory key by akshaya raman that came out last week. it follows four estranged siblings who need to go on a quest to find an ivory key that has the location of mines of mayaka, which the kingdom depends on. the characters, their relationships with each other and the altogether dynamics were so good but, personally, i felt the plot was a little too simplistic and convenient. but still 4/5 go read it.
the wrath of ambar duology by tanaz bathena is about a girl with a star shaped birthmark in a country where girls with star shaped birthmarks regularly go missing. it's set in an india that was never colonised by the british (but also, magic). personally i thought this was meant for a younger audience, but i still enjoyed it nevertheless. the romance is cute, and the main character, while being stupid at times, is still fun to read about. i have not read the second book yet, however, and it's still on my tbr.
other books that are indian fantasies but i haven't read yet are the tiger at midnight that afaik is an assasin who wants to kill a general X soldier of the said general inspired by hindu mythology and the sisters of the snake which is about a princess and a street urchin who look identical, and therefore decide to switch places.
have fun reading!!

Book Review: Hunted by the Sky (The Wrath of Ambar #1) by Tanaz Bhathena
Tumblr media
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rating: 4/5
Book Review:
This book was GREAT. It surprised me in ways that I hadn’t expected, and that made me love it more than I thought. It was so different and fresh, and I fell straight into the world.
The mythology of the world was brilliant. I know the author based it off Indian folklore, one of the many folklores/mythologies that I love, so I was really into that for that reason. I liked that it was its own world, but it felt familiar to anyone who knows anything about Indian folklore. I loved the magic, the gods, the stories, the creatures. They were so interesting and my favorite part!
The characters were good. I personally didn’t notice anything special about the characters (versus other YA books), but I liked them enough to find myself rooting for their goals. They were strong characters who all had specific choices and thoughts about things, so that created a lot of tension that I liked. The romance wasn’t that great to me, as it just felt like it was…. there, but I did like them together.
The story itself was good and interesting. I liked the plot, I felt like there was a lot of action and some good conversations displayed. Everything felt like it pushed the story along, and that it was all needed.
I definitely enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the next one!

D&D Cleric Names: Followers of Auril
Tumblr media
Hi guys! This is my first entry in a series of names for D&D clerics. This list gives name suggestions for followers of the winter goddess Auril, also known as the Frostmaiden.
As the personification of winter's wrath, Auril is a cruel goddess who seems to mostly be worshiped out of fear. In cold climates, sacrifices are made to her in hopes for a milder winter. In rare occasions humans are sacrificed.
Followers of Auril recruit on cold nights, offering the homeless and vulnerable salvation instead of freezing to death on the street. If one wanted to join the Church of Auril, they would have to undergo a ritual called the Embracing. The applicant, using no magic and wearing only boots and a thin robe, would have to spend all night in a raging blizzard. If they survived until the morning they were accepted into the Church.
Druids consider her an important deity and a part of nature, but usually don't worship her exclusively.
You can read more about Auril here:

Memories of Time: Chapter eighteen
What if you woke up one morning and realized that you were back in the beginning of your story? But to your surprise, you remember how that story will play out. Did you go back in time?
OnBeat studio: class of 2015 Fanclub
Luna: Simon, did the move go okay?
Simon: Everything is in order, I am officially part of the roller band now. Or more like again.
Nina sighed as she took out another book from the bookcase, closing her phone as she did so. Nothing, again. How were they ever gonna find something that could actually help, especially from a book? But that was the situation. They had already browsed through everything you could possibly find about time travel from the internet—without going into conspiracy theories, but if this unlucky streak continued that would probably be the place they’d need to venture next.
Blake’s library was the most expansive library of any uppersecondary school in Argentina, but Nina still found herself missing the grand Oxford library. Maybe there, they could magically find the answer, since she felt like every book in existence had been shelved in that library.
The problem was that they didn’t really know what they were looking for in the first place. What had happened to them did not match any basic time-travel trope in fiction. It was not like Back to the Future or Harry Potter, not even some more obscure ones like Star Wars. The key was that their consciousnesses had transferred, nothing else had. Nothing had changed physically or biologically.
Another problem was that she couldn’t come up with any reason for all of this to be happening, since they did not choose to go back in time. Usually, if involuntary time travel happened in books or movies, it was because there was something in the past events that needed fixing. But what on earth were they supposed to fix? Granted not everything they had been through had gone perfectly, but everything had worked out in the end. She and Gastón had had a very good life, and she wouldn’t exchange it for anything. The same was true for Luna and Matteo, and Ambar and Simon. And you were supposed to grow from your mistakes, right? What had been so terrible that some great power in the universe or whatever had decided that they needed to go back and fix it?
There was, of course, always the possibility that this still was some kind of dream. A dream that six of them just happened to share and had lasted over a month already. That didn’t seem to be very likely, though, unless they had been kidnapped after all and plugged into the matrix or something. She really was feeling like she was in a science fiction novel. But the problem was that all of them were able to feel and touch, something that very much alluded to them actually experiencing everything that was actually happening. The nerves of their bodies were connected to their minds. Pinching oneself was not the dream detector method without a reason after all.
She sincerely hoped this was a dream they could all just wake up from at any minute. She’d definitely take stressing about wedding planning and meetings with her editor any day over this wacky time travel escapade. She was not a very adventurous person after all. She smiled as she thought about the condition Gastón had made right after they had decided the wedding date. If she were to get even slightly overwhelmed by the planning, they would elope and face the wrath of their mothers later.
“Okay, I definitely don’t wanna see another high school physics book ever again.” Gastón emerged from behind the bookcases and made his way over to her. “I sincerely miss the books I used for my thesis and I never thought I would ever say that.”
“It can’t be that frustrating.” Nina smiled at him. Gastón had worked very hard for what he had achieved. Not just anyone could have been offered a place in one of the most prestigious engineering companies in Buenos Aires at the age of 24.
“You know that I never take the easy way.” He leaned on the bookshelf that she had been combing through previously. “But I don’t think science is going to be of any use. Time is too wide of a variable.” It was a miracle that Nina was able to keep up with his physics talk, but she had gotten used to it after all. It was inevitable if you were going to be an engineer’s wife.
“You sure it has nothing to do with radiation?”
“If it did, I wouldn’t know. But I don’t think so. That was one of the areas where time has usually nothing to do with anything, outside of half times and periods of decay. This has nothing to do with microscopic phenomena, at least I don’t think so. Now I really wish I did quantum physics more.”
“You hate quantum physics.”
“Yes, I do. I prefer things I can touch.” He was running his finger through her hair as he said that. He definitely was not talking about only physics anymore.
“Stop distracting me.”
“I am not doing any such thing.” He was a terrible liar, and even if he wasn’t, his grin gave it all away anyway.
She turned her head back to the bookcase and eyed the titles. Looking at the spines made her head spin for a moment as the feeling of hopelessness flooded her brain. She let out a breath. “Actually, distract me all you like. I’m not getting anywhere either. I don’t know what I’m even supposed to be looking for. If there was an obvious answer, we would have already found it… I—” Her voice began to waver.
“Nina,” Gastón interrupted her, placing his arms around her waist. She leaned her head on his chest. “You’re demanding too much of yourself again. Have you slept at all?”
“No, not really. Sorry, I’m getting worked up over nothing again.”
“Don’t worry, being there for you is my job. And don’t lose hope, okay? We’re all in this together.” His voice always miraculously managed to calm her down. She stood up and took another deep breath.
“I know, thank you. I’m sorry, we always just talk about me. How are you doing?”
“Well, Mom still thinks I have some secret girlfriend somewhere.” He pulled her closer again as he said that.
Nina couldn’t help but smile, that sounded like Isla. She loved Gastón’s mother very much and she got along miraculously well with her own. “Well, you are a terrible liar.”
“But I’m not even lying. You’re not my girlfriend, are you? Even if everyone thinks that I am 17.” He touched the ring on her finger. “But who can blame her?” he sighed, “You know how much she’s always wanted a daughter…”
From Gastón and from what Isla had told her herself, Nina had pieced together that Gastón was not intended to be an only child. When he was three, Isla had had a cancer scare. In the end, the tumor had ended up being non-malignant, but the cure had still required the removal of her fallopian tubes. Nina didn’t really know how all of that worked, she hadn’t gone into medicine after all. Gastón’s parents had been very open about it, so she guessed that they had made peace with the fact that they had not been able to have any more children. Nina did know that Gastón would have not been against having siblings, a sentiment she understood well. She wouldn’t have said no to a sibling herself, but being from a broken home hadn’t allowed that.
“...so it is up to me to provide her one,” Gastón continued. “In the forms of a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter. And since I have managed the former, the other won’t be far behind.” she still wondered how he still managed to get her to blush with his attempts at flirting. They had talked about children, even before they were engaged, and they had very much agreed that kids were at least three years away for them. They were too young now, and he knew it, so he was definitely joking here.
“Now slow down, we’re not even married, yet,” she put her arms around his neck as he gripped her waist tighter sliding his hand under her uniform jacket. “Well, is it still wrong for me to look forward to it, in every aspect? And speaking of my parents, they’re still away this weekend, so do you think you can slip away? I haven’t had you alone in a while.”
“I think I can manage.” She and Luna had made a plan where they’d cover for each other when they went to spend the night with Gastón and Matteo. It had worked thus far. All she had to do to tell her mother that she was spending the night/weekend at Luna’s and no questions were asked. She guessed that her parents were too happy about the fact that she finally had a friend to notice or investigate what she was really up to. “I don’t know how I haven’t gotten caught yet, but it is worth it.” She slid her hands down his chest and opened the buttons on his jacket.
Suddenly she realized something that made her freeze for a moment.
“What’s wrong?”
“We have already been caught…Your parents have cameras. Isn’t there a camera in the living room and in the hall? They must have been on while they were away.”
To her surprise, Gastón laughed. “Do you think I am that stupid? Nina, Dad told me the code to shut them off when we stayed there in 2021 while they were away. I have had them off anytime you or anyone else who isn’t just Matteo has been around. And they don’t check them anyway, so no one will notice the missing hours of footage. So, you have nothing to worry about, we won’t be caught.” As he said that, he brought his other hand to the nape of her neck and pulled her to a deep kiss.
Nina wrapped her arms back around his neck as he started backing her up and finally pushing her against the bookcase behind them. He must have done it with a bit too much force, as something fell off the bookcase and almost hit them. That made them break the kiss.
“What was that?” They saw a book lying on the ground. Nina picked it up and turned it around in her hands. The book was heavy and looked like it was longer than Order of the Phoenix. It was called With the Speed of Light. She had never heard of it, and it had definitely not been on the shelves, which she knew because she had gone through every book on that particular bookcase.
“That must have fallen off the top of the shelf,” Gastón said as he too examined the book and looked up to the bookcase. “Who would leave a book there? Even I can’t reach up there, and that could have been dangerous. Have you read that one?”
“No, I’ve never even heard of it.” She turned the book over and tried to make sense of the back cover. That was not an easy task—she hated vague descriptions on back covers. “I have no idea what it’s supposed to be about, except…lightspeed and hyperspace is a form of time travel, right?”
“Hold on, I’ll look up the plot. We don’t have time to read that, even with my reading speed. It probably won’t have anything for us to go on, but it can’t hurt.” Gastón took his phone out and typed the name of the book into it. “It’s apparently from some Nothern European author, from the sound of the surname anyway… haven’t heard of them. Doesn't say when it was published, odd. Why they even have it here…” He stopped in his tracks, staring down at his phone.
“What is it?”
“Nina…look at this,” he turned his phone towards her and she noticed that he had been reading the plot description. She took his phone and read the description. She stared blankly at the words after she had read them. It couldn’t be. “This…this sounds exactly like what has happened to us. How can that be?”
“Does it say how it was solved?”
“You don’t mean this could be the solution?”
“Nina, being in love with you has forced me to believe in fate.” She had to giggle at that. As absurd as it sounded, she had to say that he was right. “Think about it. This book basically fell from heaven, and it could be the answer. Let me have a look.”
Gastón took the book out of her hands and started leafing through it. Nina kept reading the plot description. Basically, the book was about a girl called Gabriella who one night after a fight with her mother woke up three years in the past. She kept scrolling to see if the article said how she had gotten back to the future.
“So apparently, in this, there was a prophecy that you could return to where you belong by going back to the moment where everything changed. In this, it was the moment where her father died, since that led her to become so close with her mother and that’s why the fight was a such a huge deal.”
“Hold on…found it.” Gastón turned to a specific page. Apparently, he had found the paragraph where the character got back to the future. “So, she had to get back to the moment where her father died, so she basically had to make sure that the events that led up to it happened…and in the end, she had to kill him…to make it happen. That's a nice ending,” he remarked sarcastically.
“We have to kill someone?!” Her ability to think rationally had stopped working for a second.
“No, I don’t think it’ll come to that,” Gastón laughed. “No one has died after all. But I think there is something in this, it’s too big of a coincidence.”
“You mean that we need to go back to the moment where everything changed to get back?” Things were refusing to make sense in her head. “How would we even know what that would be?”
“That’s what we need to figure out, so we can make sure it happens. I really think this is the answer.”
“You do?”
“It’s worth the risk, and it’s all we have to go on.”

Gastón: We need all of you urgently in the morning!
Matteo: What is it?
Nina: We can’t explain it here in the chat, just get here.
The messages dinging on the chat interrupted Simon from wiping the tables at Roller. He didn’t fully understand what was happening, but Gastón and Nina didn’t call just anything urgent. He was just about to type his own message asking for more details when his phone started ringing—a video call from Ambar.
He looked around carefully to see if anyone would notice if he slipped quietly to the dressing room. Once he got out of sight, he picked up the call. Ambar’s face didn’t appear on the screen, instead the camera showed a rapidly moving view of a hallway. He suspected that she had called him while making her way to the library.
“Ambar!” he tried to get her attention as the library came into view.
“Oh, Simon, didn’t notice you.” Ambar raised the phone so her face came into view as she entered the library.
“Do you know what’s going on?”
“That’s what I’m going to find out. Hopefully, it’s good news. Hold on.” She dropped the phone to her side as she squeezed through the bookcases. Simon saw that Gastón and Nina were already waiting there.
“Ambar, did you see either Luna or Matteo?” Gastón asked as she sat down and set the phone so that Simon could see around the space that was surrounded by bookcases.
“No, but I have Simon right here. And they’d better be here soon, because I want to know what this is about.”
“I want to know too,” Simon said as the other two turned their attention toward him and Ambar. From what Simon could make out, Nina was holding some sort of book on her lap, and he couldn’t help himself from asking, “Have you two found something out?”
“Maybe, or at least we hope so,” Nina said looking at Gastón. She took the book from her lap and gave it to Ambar, who turned the phone so Simon could see as well. “With the Speed of Light?”
“Have you heard of it?”
“No, I am afraid I haven’t. Simon?”
If anyone had not read a book, it was Simon, so an obscure SciFi book was definitely not something he would have been familiar with, especially if his well-educated and cultured lawyer wife or a literal author wasn’t. “Well, I definitely have not.”
“And I don’t think we should even hope that Luna or Matteo would have if you two haven’t.” Ambar said, pointing to the other two.
“What have we not done?” Simon could see Matteo and Luna squeezed through the bookcases.
“Either of you happen to be familiar with a book called With the Speed of Light by Markus Tuominen?”
“Nope,” Matteo answered Gastón’s question. “You really think that I would have read a book that you haven’t?”
“Nevermind,” Gastón sighed. “Anyway…it just so happens that we found this book by accident, but it provides the solution to our situation, or at least we think it does.”
“What! Well, how?”
“This book’s plot is almost identical to what has happened to us.” Nina took the book back from Ambar. Everyone except Gastón silently stared at her.
Simon got fed up with the silence. “Well, how was it solved?”
“According to this book, we need to figure out a moment where ‘everything changed’ and make sure it happens.” That went over Simon’s head. He had never been that good at riddles.
“The moment when everything changed? That could be a million things.” Ambar wondered aloud. “One thing is clear: it’s something that happened to all of us, since we were brought back to the day when we originally met.”
“I think it has something to do with you four since that was the day you met. Technically this has nothing to do with me and Nina, which, now that I’ll think about it is very odd, but we can worry about it later. It should at least narrow it down.” Gastón took a breath to continue, but then he turned towards Matteo. Simon had not been paying much attention to him, but when he looked over, he saw that Matteo’s eyebrows were scrunched together in a pensive expression, one that wasn’t necessarily characteristic of Matteo Balsano.
“Matteo, you have been unnaturally quiet.”
“Call me crazy, but I think I know…” Everyone had turned to look at Matteo. “It’s when I kissed Luna, at the competition.”
Simon’s brain clicked. Matteo was right. Even if that moment had originally been a source of great heartbreak for him, it still had been the start of something new. It had been the beginning of him realizing that Luna was not for him, even if he didn’t know it at the time. Without that realization, he and Matteo would not be friends today, nor would Luna be happy with Matteo, nor he with Ambar. “I agree with Matteo.”
“I think it is the best idea we’ve got,” Ambar said. “But how do we do it?”
“It should be easy, shouldn’t it?” Luna asked. “Matteo and I just enter the competition together.”
“Luna,” Nina interrupted her, “that’s not how it’s going to work. That’s too easy. The reason why it was such a big moment was because you and Matteo weren’t even supposed to be skating together. We can’t take too many risks—we need to repeat history. You all need to enter the competition, but Luna needs to skate with Simon.”
“That means I’ll have to skate with Matteo.” Ambar looked down, frustrated. “People are supposed to think we’re broken up. How will that look?”
“But you are still supposed to be friends, and people think of you as the most talented skaters here,” Nina countered, “so it would still make sense if you two skated together. We need to try to make everything happen as it did originally.”
“Wait…this means that you have to be involved too,” Matteo said, pointing to Gastón. “If I‘ve understood this correctly, you need to compete too. To quote you, It’ll be a risk if you aren’t in the competition because we can’t know how the placements will change if you aren’t. Did that sound a bit right?”
“That would mean me and Delfi. No matter how hard I try, that would definitely give her the wrong idea.” There was nothing but horror in Gastón’s eyes, even Simon could see it through the screen.
“I’m sorry, but Matteo is right…” Nina started saying something, but then Simon heard footsteps approaching the dressing room, and he had just enough time to disconnect the call before Pedro came through the door.
“Tamara wants to speak with us about the competition arrangements. Who were you talking to?”
“Just my family in Mexico.”
“Then I’m probably going crazy, because the voices sounded extremely familiar.” Simon’s blood ran cold as he tried to think of something to cover for himself. Luckily Pedro continued, “Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hear anything besides voices.”
Simon nodded in relief and got up and followed Pedro put of the dressing room.
***
Matteo and Gastón entered the hallway after their second to last class. Matteo had been lost in thought since their meeting. He guessed that he should be happy, now that they had some kind of plan outside of avoiding their parents. Not that Matteo’s father was any trouble—he was barely home, after all—but Sofia, his father’s wife, didn’t always go with him on work trips, so she was still home.
Matteo had a good relationship with his stepmother, nowadays anyway, and he appreciated her in many ways. Without her, he and his dad would still be traveling all over the world, like they had been ever since his mother had died. Thanks to his father’s remarriage, he was allowed to stay at the same school and make real friends, which led him to meet Gastón, Ambar, and eventually Luna.
“Can I talk to you for a second?” Matteo said, pulling them to a stop in an emptier hallway.
“You know, I ought to be angry with you for throwing me into hot water with Delfi for the competition.” Gastón was clearly trying to sound intimidating, but Matteo knew him too well. “But I guess I don’t have a choice anymore. Well, what do you wanna talk about? You have not gotten caught at home are you, because I can tell you that I have been close multiple times.”
“Nothing like that, everything is going fine. Sofia is trying maybe a little too hard, which makes sense seeing as they’ve only been married for two years now, and I guess I wasn’t as fine with the whole situation the first time as I am now. No, it’s not about that. I just have something I need to run by you—it’s about Luna.”
“About Luna? This can never be good…” Gastón cut his sentence short as a teacher passed two of them in the hallway.
“Good day, boys.”
“Good day, Ms. Fernandes.”
“Actually, I have been meaning to talk to you Gastón,” she said as she turned around to face Gastón. Matteo shot Gastón a confused look.
“I must say, I am impressed. You have always been a top student, but your English levels have gone up exponentially since last year. You are far above the level you should be for your age, and you seem to have adopted some British speaking patterns and colloquialisms, which we usually don’t teach here.”
Matteo was glad that Ms. Fernandes was facing away from him, because he was definitely not keeping his poker face as well as Gastón was being forced to.
“Thank you. I—I spent a lot of time in England over the summer.”
“Well, keep that up. It’s students like you who help our school maintain its prestigious position. I am sure your parents are very proud.”
Gaston nodded with exaggerated gravity, which Ms. Fernandes must have seen as an adequate response, indicating how seriously her star student took his studies, because she gave a slight nod in response and continued on her way.
Matteo burst out laughing as soon as she finally rounded a corner. Gastón leaned against the wall and let out a frustrated grunt.
“Don’t laugh, this is serious, and not in a good way. Sure Mom and Dad would be proud, if they knew, which they’re not going to. Hopefully the school isn’t planning on telling them. If we manage to get back, I sincerely hope that we won’t remember any of this, since I don’t think I’d be able to look at Mom and Dad the same ever again. But if we do, I am taking Nina and eloping, screw the wedding and our mothers. Anyway, what did you have to say about Luna?”
“Right, that.” Matteo took a small breath. “This will probably sound like a very bad idea, given the situation we’re in, but I don’t know if I can wait.”
“Now you are scaring me.”
“I’ve been thinking…you know that I was about to propose to Luna before everything happened, and I have been wondering if I should still do it.” Matteo didn’t really know why talking about this had been making him so nervous. The fact was that he wanted to marry Luna more than anything, and he was getting anxious about the proposal…and he had to admit he had been feeling quite hopeless about the whole situation. Would they ever be able to actually get back? “I mean, it’s probably stupid and I shouldn't rush into it now, but we don’t know when we’re getting back or if we’re even able to. If this plan doesn’t work—”
“Matteo, I totally understand you,” Gastón interrupted him. “You think I wouldn’t marry Nina right this second if I could?”
“So you think I should do it?”
“Not exactly. It is, of course, your choice, and I’ll support you on anything you decide, unless it’s something super stupid.” Matteo rolled his eyes, but Gastón was right. Gastón always told him when he was in the wrong, and that was one of the things that he loved about him. “But as you said, we can’t really know what’s going to happen. You know that I believe in fate, and I’m certain that us finding that book was more than just a coincidence. Nothing happens without a reason, but none of us can know whether this solution will actually work before we’ve tried.”
“Where are you going with this?”
“Basically what I am saying is, do you want to get engaged with the knowledge that you might forget that you ever were? If we don’t get back, you have to hold on and hide it until Luna is 18.”
Matteo got lost hack in his thoughts for a moment. He hadn’t really thought is like that. Would he be okay with it, proposing with the knowledge that they would never be able to actually get married… he didn’t know. “So do you think I should propose or not?” he asked.
“I can’t tell you that. But think it over well before you do. We can’t know what will happen, we’re not promised tomorrow at this point. Nothing is certain and far from being settled, and doing that in rush and desperation maybe isn’t the best idea, but it is up to you”
Okay so, now we have a plan, yayyyy! We'll see how well that'll work out... I also feel like I am going to get burned ta the stake for my "Matteo has a stepmother" headcanon since it is bit more out there than anything else I have come up with this far.
Also if you are reading this, I have survived my matriculation examinations

Angsty angsty sadness Poseidon/Thor ;D
Birth death.
Welcome to a how much can I mess this characters emotionality, today, there is going to be the pregnant reader, but with a change, everything is ok and she wakes up (until birth tho)
Poseidon
You had woken up on the same week your day of giving birth was scheduled for
" Apollo? What are you doing here?"
"Reader! You already woke up. I have to notify Poseidon"
"Apollo?!"
∆∆∆
"Reader!"
"Poseidon! What happened?"
" It doesn't matter now that you are well"
You were quite weak but still healthy enough for no one to worry about
" Reader are you ok?"
"Yes yes, I only got out of breath"
"Ok, just don't force it"
Everything went normal, you were trying to walk around and be active
" Let's go swimming! It is so sunny!'
" I will wait for you on the shore. Don't go too deep into the sea
Until the day of giving birth.
"H-Honey"
"Mhm?"
" I think I went into labor"
"What"
"I am in labor!"
" I'm calling Artemis"
Things went too bad too quickly
" Apollo! Come here!"
"I'm going I'm going"
"I need Tranexamic acid! Fast"
" Poseidon, please go out"
The bleeding wouldn't stop no matter what they trying using
" Did you use enough Tranexamic acid? Maybe the dose wasn't enough?"
"I gave her the maximum dose!"
" Reader is burning in fever!"
"How high?"
"110°F"
"Give her acetaminophen! That should help her out"
At the point where you finished giving birth you already died.
" Reader, wake up, reader you finished giving birth. Please reader, wake up.
Poseidon was devastated by your death.
"What?"
" She died, she's gone"
" Poseidon where are you going!? Your children are here!"
" Apollo, no"
He started employing painters to make portraits of you in any way where you seemed alive, like dancing in a meadow, swimming in the sea.
" I finished the commission, where do I put it"
" Eh!? Another one?, Put it in that corner, we will find a wall to put that portrait on"
"That is the fifth this week, isn't it?"
He wouldn't care for your children. Having servants at that duty
" Athy, you are in charge of apolline today? Yesterday we did a play date with Apo and Eire and accidentally she took her shark plushie"
" Tomorrow I'm in charge of Apo, but I can tell ambar to go fetch it from eirene"
" Thank you, you are a lifesaver!"
He couldn't stand the thought of caring for what killed you
Until one night, charmian wouldn't stop crying all night. At his last straw, he went to her crib to shut her up
" Is someone going to shut this mutt up or will I have to do it"
"Waaaaaaah"
"What? What are you crying for?'
But when Poseidon looked in her eyes he saw a you in her.
'You look just like the person you killed, like your mother" sighs " she changed my life, she made my life worthwhile."holds baby" I really wanted for you to be quiet, but now… I wouldn't mind hearing your mindless coos. You even sound a little like your mother."
*Squeak*
" Pray tell, are your siblings as similar to your mother as you?"
*Coo*
Poseidon saw a little piece of you in every one of your children
Charmian was your carbon copy
Eirene had your eyes
Halcyone had your personality
Apolline, had your face
Asafes had your hair
Even if he lost the first moments of their lives he didn't plan on missing more
" How is little miss charmian doin- mister Poseidon?!"
Poseidon was seated in the rocking chair with the baby in his chest. The only thing that Poseidon did was to put a finger in his lips to show her to stay quiet
" I'm returning in one second sir"
That day Poseidon visited all of his children after all, they were the last gift you gave him
Thor
Loki was right, after 5 years you woke up perfectly, or almost perfectly, you were significantly more weak.
" I told ya, she would wake up in 5 years, but nooo, you didn't believe me. I believe you owe me an apology"
" Shut up"
But no one paid attention to it, after all, they had to check more important things.
"Lately I have been out of breath"
"Maybe do a little exercise? Or maybe rest?
Everything went overall ok. You got shortness of breath more easily but they thought it was mostly because of the twins
"Ow, sweetie, don't worry, it's normal to get out of breath in pregnancies"
"Sure, miss frigg?"
"Totally"
The winter came, harsh cold and a perfect environment for viruses and bacteria.
You got pneumonia, and that is when things started getting worse. Your breathing got even worse, leaving you out of breath even if you did nothing. While you were trying to fight the illness the Æsir were all wishing for you to get better or your birth to be far away.
"Give her some antibiotics, and keep her away from water!"
" I will eir"
But wishing does nothing against fate, your birth fell not even the same day you cured from pneumonia, but when you were still ill.
No one thought you were going to survive, it was a struggle to be breathing doing nothing, the birth of twins would be anything but easy.
" Get some wet towels!"
"And some antibiotics!"
Loki thought that he dodged a bullet when you woke up. He went on a journey the day you started giving birth, he didn't want to face Thor's wrath if you died.
"Where are you going Loki?"
"Anywhere away from Thor"
Thor was by your side the whole time grabbing your hand and brushing hair out of your face.
" You can do it. Do you want to grab my hand, you can squeeze it if it makes you feel better. I know you can make it, I believe in you"
You survived the birth and had some time with your twins.
"They don't have anything of mine, they have your golden eyes and your red hair"
" they got your nose and your eye shape"
But you didn't survive the night
"Reader, do you want me to change that diaper?"
" "
"Reader? Please answer, are you asleep? No, it must be another thing. Reader please, stop it it isn't funny anymore"
Thor wouldn't let anyone touch the twins. Not his mother, nor his father, Loki or servants
"Can I grab my niece and nephew?" Asked Loki already hovering over the babies
"No. You are the reason they don't have a mother"
"Aww! Let those cuties meet their grandma. Thor! Don't move them! I want to hold them"
"You are part of why they don't have a mother too"
" … "
" No"
"Mister Thor, let me care for the twins , I have some experience with babies"
" Get a step closer and you aren't walking well out of this"
" O-oh sorry, they are calling me, I have to go!"
If Thor was close to the twins in the comma reader, they are closer if the reader died

Of the Founding of Arnor
"Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta"
Thus are recorded the words of Elendil at the Founding of Arnor. “Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.”
Elendil arrived in the northern reaches of Middle-earth, sailing up the River Lune with his first steps on Middle-earth being somewhere in the Tower Hills. Scholars still debate whether the River Lune was his intended landing (perhaps to seek the aid of Gil-galad whose kingdom of Lindon lay not far) or just as his sons were blown off course, he had meant to make for Lond Daer only to arrive farther north than he had intended.
Regardless of his intentions, the land Elendil found upon landing was an ideal place for a new beginning. Eriador, as it has been for most of existence, was a wide land with many wilds and spaces open for settlement. The lands along the Baranduin River were fertile, lumber was plentiful along Lake Evendim and the North Downs, while the northern foothills of the Misty Mountains were rife with iron deposits.
When he had landed, the Elves of Lindon came to the exiles and brought them supplies and aid, with Gil-galad going so far as to order the White Towers built to shelter Elendil and his household. For half a year, Elendil resided in the highest of the towers, using the palantíri at his disposal to scout out the land and seek out his sons. Upon learning everything he wished to know, he gathered his household, swore eternal friendship with Gil-galad, and made his way to the shores of Evendim where he established his seat of Annúminas. The day after the first stones of the city were set, Elendil sent out envoys.
The first envoys went east, to Khazad-Dum and the dwarf holds of the Misty Mountains. Though now isolationist following the Fall of Eregion, the envoys of Elendil obtained recognition of their new realm from Durin III as well as a promise that no enemy of the Faithful would be permitted to climb the passes of the Misty Mountains. In exchange the dwarf-lord simply wanted his people to be left alone and not be drawn into any costly conflicts.
Now to the South was a far more interesting dilemma. Since the days of Tar-Aldarion, the coasts and river sides of southern Eriador had been inhabited by colonists of Númenor who had since mixed with the local Middle Men. These Remmengwaith, or ‘Tangled Folk’ as the Elves called them, were cautious upon the arrival of the Faithful. They had suffered greatly at the Fall of Númenor with many of their coast lands being caught in the sea’s wrath and their main settlement of Lond Daer having been greatly damaged by a great wave that had swept away half of its folk. They had since moved a great number of their folk upriver to Tharbad where the envoys of Elendil found them.
When the envoys came with the news of the fall of Númenor and the arrival of Elendil, there was great confusion among the people. Those who had the greater blood of Numenor were welcoming of the new comers and rejoiced at Elendil’s founding of Arnor. But those who were more of the kin of Middle Men spoke saying “Who is this lord from beyond the Sea? And by what right does he claim the lands of our fathers? If he seeks a realm for himself, let him make one in the North and stay there, but why should he rule over us?” And there was great strife among the folk.
Now the leader of this people was named Mithend, the son of a chieftain of the folk who would later be called the Dunlendings and the only daughter of the Lord of Lond Daer. The lord had died during the tumult of the fall of Númenor and Mithend was his heir. Now Mithend was a large man, seemingly gregarious and boisterous upon a first meeting, but with a keen mind that held great wisdom for those who looked closer.
And seeing the distress of his people, he wandered the banks of the Greyflood for several days, deep in thought. When he finally returned to his hall where the envoys waited, he spoke thus. “It cannot be denied that I am a lesser lord when compared to the likes of Elendil Nimruzir, but to those of my people who know him not, I am the only lord they care to know. Therefore I say this. Elendil holds claim to the lands that Númenor holds, so let him have Lond Daer and Tharbad. But the towns and villages east of Greyflood were not raised by Numenor, nor did they guide the hands that built them. There I will dwell with what kin of mine who will not see him as king. And yet we bear no ill will to Elendil and we offer him our aid as friends and not servants.”
Elendil agreed to these terms and Mithend led what folk would leave into the south and east, to Enedwaith and Dunland.
Finally, to the south the envoys came to the newly fashioned realm of Gondor, bringing Isildur and Anárion the greetings of their father and three palantíri. And thus were the Realms in Exile founded.

I don’t know if its true but I heard the Ambar is going to end uo dating Benicio for a bit to make Simon jealous but shes stupid if she does that because that won’t make him jealous that would push him away and theres a video tht they were reheasing and Alfredo asks Ambar about her friend because its like a dinner and Simon is there and apparently Benicio tol and Benicio says Im her boyfriend and she says my boyfriend but the video ends there im really hoping she denies but I doubt it
If she actually dates that piece of shit I’m gonna lose my mind. How little must she love herself to step so low???
And If she only does it to make him jealous then I agree with you. I dont think It will do her any good, I think it will backfire. I do think it’d make him jealous but the pain will only push him further away, not closer. If this was another kind of show (not Disney) maybe it could work. You know, like some angry kissing and shit. But this is Disney so there’s no way that’s going to happen. They’re trying to show kids that manipulation and overall bad behaviour doesn’t pay off and therefore, even if she achieves her goal of making him jealous, she won’t get him back because of that, on the contrary, it will only convince him even more that she’s a lost cause.
About the video I also saw it but I couldn’t understand very well what they were saying. If she actually pulls that stun in front of Simón I’m gonna lose my shit. My baby is my number one priority and if she just deliberately hurts him hell will break loose, I swear. She won’t escape my wrath.
