I miss you blockbuster I miss you cds I miss you little buttons that played song previews in walmart I miss you vhs tapes I miss you blocky tv with rabbit ears that only had 10 channels I miss you scratched dvds from the library I miss you envelopes of developed photos from a film camera I miss you flip phones covered in stickers I miss you physical media

#edit for clarification: I do still engage in physical media. i know many of these things are still around today #i still buy cds and vinyl and read paper books from the library and I own a film camera #this is moreso about the culture as a whole shifting to value convenience over experience #listening to cds on my own will not change the culture back to when physical media was the norm for everyone #I’m a nostalgia-ridden person there’s a specific feeling I’m missing that I can’t achieve by myself #g

‘No one else is saving it’: the fight to protect a historic music collection

The ARChive of Contemporary Music, which houses more than 90m songs and is supported by names such as Martin Scorsese, is in need of a new home

It all started in a loft in Tribeca, New York, long before it was a trendy neighbourhood. “I had 47,000 records and nobody wanted them,” recalls Bob George, who had just published a discography of punk and new wave music. “That led a lot of people coming to me and saying you have to save this stuff; no one else is saving it. That got the ball rolling in my loft in what is now fashionable Tribeca, which was an incredibly unfashionable war zone in 1974 when I was first there.”

George turned his record collection into the ARChive of Contemporary Music (Arc) in 1985 with co-founder David Wheeler. The non-profit music library and research centre now contains more than 3m sound recordings or over 90m songs, making it one of the biggest popular music collections in the world. Donors and board members have included David Bowie, Jonathan Demme, Lou Reed, Martin Scorsese and Paul Simon.

The Arc is not open to the public but has been a vital resource for film-makers, writers and researchers ranging from Ken Burns looking for a song for his series Baseball to the new Grammy Hall of Fame and Museum in Los Angeles needing cover art for its inducted recordings. Now, however, this unique treasure trove is under existential threat.

When the only bookstore beyond my reach closes, I remember how my heart stopped for a few seconds when I found out that the music store that I've been going in and out for 25 years gets out of business. I remember how many dates I've been inside the odyssey to see what my supposed boyfriend tastes in music. It's like giving them the final test on how interesting they are based on their choice of music. Somehow few just fail but life is progressing and I'm just left with all the nostalgic moments behind the library and a music store. Reliving the life in between the fingers of moments that are passed by. Ageing is sometimes lonely. I guess life is all about how you face it. Honestly, I deactivated my old Tumblr because the old library that used to be my comfort zone closes and I cry for a week for the books that will be gone and who knows. Well I guess the graveyard of my heart includes music and books that I used to love. No more pain but I'm enjoying the memory that brings me. @simplymarge1074
