Kenshall, ominously: heh I think it’s time you join the family…
Emerich: wait we’re marrying him too??
Montrose: ahm I think we need to have ourselves a little confab *group huddle*
Kenshall, just trying to betray them: -_-
Montrose: ah the ballots have been tallied up and you are not joining the polycule. Perhaps run for election next year, I think you have a good shot.
Emerich: but he said we’re joining the family? Wait, are we being adopted?
Beef: no it’s the other way around. Son, we’re very concerned about how much you’re open to murder. Is there something wrong? Are you having problems at school?
Kenshall: hey how about you all get in this not suspicious flying craft…

Villain: Dematoth, the Devil of No-Man’s Land
“‘Listen Crowbait, you’ve got two choices. Me, or bearing those wounds of yours for a lingering eternity, until that pain and the aftertaste of sepsis are all that’s left of you. Plenty of other sundered souls on this battlefield who’d jump at my offer, so... what’s it going to be?
War profiteers come in all shapes and sizes, and even after the fighting’s done there’s still opportunity to be found. While the victors look for survivors to slay or ransom and the corpsepickers hunt for rings and baubles, Dematoth moves among the spirits of the fallen looking for those pained, desperate, and willing to make a deal. Is a century of service worth sparing yourself the pain of a wound that will not fade? or what about a  personal escort to a cushy part of the underworld in exchange for a secret that could ruin the lives you’ve left behind?  The devil knows how to drive a hard bargain but she seldom needs to, the bodies are always piling up somewhere and a new sucker dies every minute.
Sour and Sullen,  the devil of no-man’s land cares little for the morality games of her kin, considering most mortals to be a means to an end at best and a waste of her time at worst. While the party might stumble across Dematoth out reaping fresh souls after a battle, she’s more likely to act as an unseen arms dealer among the forces of evil, offloading battalions of revanants and cursed objects to would be diabolists and greater fiends in exchange for various favours. In this way, the party can end up fighting a gang of early-game bandits only to be met with an unexpected postmortem rematch.
Hooks:
For the last few years Dematoth has been following a bloody band of mercenaries, adding fallen sadists and victims to her horde of stolen souls as the sellswords grow rich off of their contracts. This easy arrangement is due to be interrupted when the mercenaries get contracted out by another minor villain to act as muscle for a looming confrontation with the party, motivating the usually indolent devil to start getting proactive. While the heroes may have thought they were only fighting mundane threat, they’ll soon find themselves dealing with curses and other malevolent phenomenon alongside the ruthless mercs and petty despot they thought they were originally facing.
Following a number of otherworldy signs and nightmarish attacks, the party eventually realize they’re on the trail of a rampaging demon that arose from the soul of a famously wicked warrior. Tracking the entity back to the defiled tomb of its greatest foe, the party encounter Dematoth stalking the hallways on a hunt of her own. As the Devil of Noman’s land explains it, this isn’t a ghost that can be put to rest with silver and emotional catharsis, their quarry can only be bound, an art that far outstrips the party’s current skill. If they’re smart they’ll make an alliance with her, distracting and weakening the demon while she does her thing and stuffs it in her ominous skull lantern. Can the party believe her? or is there a better means of dealing with this infernal threat?
In peacetime, Dematoth likes to engineer little accidents where brave individuals get themselves killed due to their own foolhardy actions, appearing in various guises to point the avricious and the adventurous towards a sudden end. After her mark is dead, she appears, claiming to be a psychopomp who guides the courageous to their appointed afterlife after they’ve unburnded themselves of earthly regrets. This racket is an excuse to get the departed to agree to one of her deals or cough up some valuable information before the real spirit guides arrive, and can provide a delightful post-death hook for those heroes who fall in combat.

Everyone thinks they're gonna be Mad Max in the post-apocalypse- well, that's not entirely true; a surprising number of people think they're gonna be Lord Humungus or Immortan Joe- but the point is the same. Everybody thinks they'll be large and in charge, the main characters, the warriors of the wasteland, might makes right, but if you're reading this then you're more likely to be a fuckslave strapped to the front of a flaming, rusty, spike-covered truck. At best, you'll be one of a million subsistence farmers trying to make ends meet in a walled city that gets besieged by marauders every week or else you'll be one of the besieging marauders, but you'll never be the leader, nor even his oddly dressed right hand man.
You're not gonna be a mechanic or a medic or the warlord's vizier. You won't be a hero. You won't even be a villain. You'll probably be dead, or worse, one of the beleaguered, starving, wretched refuse/huddled masses that live in the warlord's fiefdom.

This is you. You're one of the emaciated peasants who fight to the death over a mud puddle gifted to you by your godking emperor. You're not a named character, you're a background extra.

I'm so curious to learn how the Bats came to the conclusion that the Phantom Kid is also the city spirit. 👀 It is a reasonable conclusion because of the soul-connection as well as appearing around the same time they felt the shift with the new City Spirit and whatever information Dr. Fate shared with the JL.
It's mostly a case of the Bats going "hey, this weird shit started happening the same time this kid with no record of existing who also triggers a similar metaphysical phenomena when we manage to interact with him started appearing" so they drew the most logical conclusion that The Phantom Boy is this City Spirit thing. I mean...they are detectives and it's not like Danny's very good at subtle.
Naturally, they don't have all the pieces of the puzzle yet, so they've still got some pretty big question marks, like what exactly a City Spirit does, the rhyme and reason for these powers they now suddenly have, and how Sam, Tucker, and Jazz fit in all of this, or what they're planning to do to help Gotham.
As for Fate...well...to me he just felt like the JL member who would realistically know something about what's going on in Gotham, so he became my exposition mouthpiece lmao. Fate knows in the broadest possible terms what's going on in Gotham's mystical behind the scenes by virtue of being a Lord of Order, but the specifics are a bit beyond him (though Gotham kind of makes him nervous because it's perpetually teetering on the very edge of spiraling into Chaos and just looking at it is anxiety-inducing for him. Needless to say, it freaked him out when the small glimmer of Order holding this budding maelstrom of Chaos together flickered out, only to be replaced by something much brighter. So Fate's been keeping a closer eye on the mystical goings on in Gotham).

So if we were to continue from the Unova Kids Villain AU, where Iris tried to kill Diantha and the Kalos E4
Godd just, when Gardevoir teleports them away to someplace safe, Diantha is in shock till she just starts breaking down in front of the E4. Just crying and yelling at herself for being so stupid. How could she not see what was Iris’ real intentions. She put her E4 and herself in danger because she only cared about Iris and not others safety. Blaming herself for what happened, direction the anger and sadness and confusion to herself, even though it was Iris to blame for what happened
But, Diantha could never blame her daughter. She would never admit to herself Iris had full intentions to murder her. No matter what, she’s always going to love her daughter, despite Iris not returning that love
Ough imagine Drasna calms down Diantha and tells them they have to find someplace more secluded, before Iris and Kyurem finds them again and attacks, because Gardevoir most likely can’t teleport them all anymore since she’s already teleported four of them from Kalos to Unova
And idk what would happen next, like do they find the other champion? Encounter the other Unova Kids? Find someone from the Unova League and get their part of the story?
But I do know it’s gonna be even more crushing for Diantha when she eventually regroups with the Champions, Lance especially. Because she’s going to have to tell Lance that the person they took in as their daughter just tried to freeze her to death
Iris is just having the time of her life retelling the story to the rest of the Unova kids. Laughing about the whole ordeal. You wanna know what fucked me up though? I imagined when Iris was telling the story, she was exaggerating the story like it was nothing. Like how teenagers do to make themselves seem cooler in front of their friends. Like they were all at the League just laughing around, hangout out with each other like teenagers
But they are teenagers. All of them (expect N whos probably 20 by now) are teenagers and they’re the ones who causes all the damage in Unova
(I honestly forgot if they’re young adults in this AU but still, they’re not even mid 20’s and they’re doing mass murder)
Your honour I'm—
Tumblr media
CAN YOU FUCKING IMAGINE THO CNDNXNNDND OUGHHH
Like,,, when Diantha finds the other Champions again, and like they're surprised that the Kalos E4 were there too, but Lance just chndbd Lance rushes to Diantha, and Dia just fucking breaks man. Fucking imagine her like legitimately breaking the fuck down, clutching Lance's cape as if it were her lifeline, hands trembling as her knuckles turn white, imagine her crying her heart out even as Lance tries to comfort her. Like can you imagine how that would be for the other champs bc Diantha is usually so calm and composed and the epitome of elegance and now she's hunched over crying, trying to form words through her tears as she clutches Lance's cape, sobbing on his chest, going on about Iris, Kyurem, and how Diantha's blaming herself for being so goddamn stupid. Like imagine what it's like for them and the Kalos E4, imagine if that's legitimately the first time almost all of them saw Diantha actually cry
And ofc, maybe the other champs and even Lance thought Iris was dead, Unova's like a frozen wasteland now, but imagine their surprise and their fear when Diantha and even the Kalos E4 told the Champions how Iris almost killed them. Like imagine the other champs not believing that at first, how could Iris, their sweet Iris, their little sister, kill someone?? That's.. that's not right. But with how Diantha is still trembling like a leaf, how even Malva and Siebold were looking to the side looking troubled, and how Wikstrom and Drasna were so worried about Diantha, well.. maybe it's true. And now they fear what's gonna happen next, they fear that if Iris was willing to kill Diantha, someone who was like a mother figure to her, then imagine how willing she would be killing the other Champions
And then w Iris chdmdb ough that mental image is dope your honour holy shit😭😭
Like them at a meeting hall or smth, Iris at the head of the table, telling her friends about her encounter with Diantha, and ofc the lil shit is gonna try to impress them, especially since her lil crush is around too, ofc she's gonna tell them how Diantha was begging for mercy, how weak the Kalos champ truly was, that even w Mega Gardevoir, she lost to Iris and Haxorus. Even better that Diantha called in the Kalos E4, ofc Iris is also gonna tell them how they were weak as well, that they never stood a chance against her, "shows, really, I'm that powerful," she boasted, leaning on the table, "and the people of Unova thinks I'm weak."
And ofc everyone else was impressed y'know, even going on how they'd want to see just how pathetic Diantha and her league were, and then they hear word that the other Champions are around, and of fucking course they want to see if they're also that weak, especially now since Iris was going on if Diantha lost to her, then she's sure as hell the other Champions are gonna lose to them. They'll make all the Champions see just how powerful they are, and the dragons will help them in doing so.

@swcctdreams both of us wanted to have Eve be a mom figure to Buddy.
Tumblr media
Having found the tiny human, Eve could tell the child was not... exactly normal but she’d need time to discern exactly what they were. “Hey Kid, I guess you’re my daughter now. As you won’t last long this far out in the wastes.” So then gently grabbing them like hamburger? She’d clean off their face with a rag before equipping them to her back, placing them in a special slot in her pack specifically for children or older kids even, Buddy finding herself comfortably snuggled on her back now, protected even with the kevlar surrounding it and plating, “Comfy kiddo? We’re gonna move out now, I was just heading back from patrol. But you’re far out, farther than anyone usually goes when out here. You’re lucky I found you in this crazy side of the wastes.”

Adventure: The Doomsday Book
“If you don’t like how it’s done, do it yourself” is very bad advice for someone with a god complex
Setup: In life, the mage Varner of Boltzford was fascinated with the complexity of the world, the seemingly infinite inter-connectivity of all things in a web so complex that one mortal mind could never understand all of it. In death fascination transformed into obsession, as Varner was driven to extend his existence to perfect what he saw as the art of the gods: Genesis, the act of bringing life out of nothingness.
Decades of experiments with astral constructs and transmutation eventually led Varner into the a philosophical and theological haze of “ontology” and “ideal forms”, along with a lot of other prattle that allowed him to convince himself that the things he could create things so beautiful they could redefine beauty, so perfect they could improve on perfection, and so real that they made other things less real by comparison.
He created the Renascent Tome, an artifact that ate up the matter of the existent world to produce things that adhred to Varner’s vision of perfection, small things at first that were mere pretty trinkets, through which he learned that the more he wanted form his creation the more he had to feed it
It was shortly after the lich turned an entire town and its surrounding valley into dust that Varner fell victim to the bane of so many promising omnicidal visionaries: meddling adventurers. The heroes did what heroes did best and though they made a proper mess out of the perfectionist’s plans they were unable to keep hold of his Tome, which slipped through their grasp to cause problems in the wider world to this day, diminished in power but no less a threat.
Hooks:
Varner went through a number of research facilities/evil lairs in his time before he was felled by heroes, and any one of them could be a resting place for his tome. Such lairs are often dumping grounds for the lich’s escaped or failed experiments: creatures and constructs so beautiful they sear or corrode things around them, eerily stagnant wilderness, the soulless progeny of attempted “master races”.  Such oddities would draw all sorts of adventurers, or at least the collectors and conservationists looking to study these anomalies.
A foolish and famehungry apprentice found the Renascent Tome at his local book fair being sold  ( at a discount no less) by an unwitting salvager. After discovering its ability to transmute things into idealized forms, he began using the book to mend broken objects and “heal” local livestock ( no matter the fact that things the book abzorbs are effectively disintegrated with a new thing made in their place). Tales of his wondrous talents reached the ear of the ailing local countess, who requested the apprentice bathe her in the books healing light and restore her to the glory she once possessed.  Now her lands are ruled by a nightmarish “perfected” tyrant, and patrolled by her inhumanly “idealized” soldiers. The thing that took the countess’s place brings the captive apprentice out from his cell every week or so to illuminate her increasingly crystalline castle, each interaction getting crueler and more alien.
Cultists of an outergod dedicated to ego destroying perfection have come to see Varner’s work as a holy relic of their faith, allowing them to perform miracles that they could have never dreamed of otherwise. They seek it always, putting a target on the party’s back should they come into possession of the Renascent Tome. When pushed to extremes, these same cultists will unleash the relic’s power without any heed for who or what it consumes, gleefully sacrificing themselves to become the foundation of the world it will create.
Item stats: The Renascent Tome
artifact
Dormant: while dormant the tome serves as a +1 arcane spellcasting focus.
A creature attuned to the Renascent tome gains the 2nd level wizard school feature: Minor Conjuration, save that the items created always have a +1 magical bonus to any rolls they were intended to make. Conjuration wizards treat both the focus and the items conjured as if they were a +2 bonus instead.
When this feature is activated, the book’s pages glow and begin siphoning in dust and small unattended objects from its surroundings. The effect is otherwise harmless.
Awakened: When awakened, the Renascent tome gains 10 charges, which may be used to cast the following spells: Discorperating light (1 charge as tasha’s caustic brew, but dealing radiant damage) Conjure Barrage ( 3 charges) or Fabricate (4 charges). Items created by the fabricate spell are of exquisite quality and retain the +1 magical bonus from the minor conjuration feature.  The tome regains 1d6+4 charges at dawn. When the last charge is spent, roll a d20, on a 1 the tome consumes itself in a blast of siphoning radiance. All creatures in a 20ft radius must make a save vs the bearer’s spell save dc ( or int+proff if they are not a caster) or suffer the effects of a successful gravity sinkhole spell
Exalted: The bonus the focus provides grows to +3 and the tome gains 10 extra charges.   The spells that it can cast now include disintegrate ( 6 charges), mirage arcane ( 7 charges) and blade of disaster (9 charges). Spells can still be cast if the item lacks the prerequisite charges, but this increases the number rolled on the no charge roll to go up by 1 per missing charge.
Curse: Once exalted, Each spell cast from the book now also requires an extra 1d4 charges. If the no charge roll occurs, in addition to triggering a gravity sinkhole, the Tome begins to act as a sphere of annihilation from that moment onwards.
Further Adventures:
Removing the curse from the Renascent Tome requires access to Varner’s research notes, requiring the party to either seek out a source of great knowledge of attempt to seek the imprisoned lich himself.
Varner has had a lot of time to think after he was imprisoned, and has concluded that the current material world is too corrupt and messy for any of his perfect creations to truly take root. Though his reemergence into the land of the living will bring with it a tide of new horrific experiments and dangerous objects released upon the world, his ultimate goal is to find a nice enough place to use as raw material for the eden he’s going to build. Given that he’s spent long enough as a lich that many of his own feelings have begun to atrophy, he’ll reach out to those closest to him ( like the meddling adventuring party that woke him up) to see what they think of as ideal. Say, the starting town of the campaign or wherever the heroes have decided to make their home.
Should the Renascent tome fulfill its purpose it’s safe to say that the party will have very little chance of undoing what its done, muchless surviving the process should they have been caught within its mile wide blast radius. However, with the slightest bit of divine intervention from whatever spirits are watching over their adventures, the party might just be able to turn that slim chance into a fighting one. They find themselves trapped inside the grotesque Perfection of Varner’s world, a grotesque parody of a place familiar to them with all the personality and imperfection scrubbed away.  At its center is the Tome, its own less than perfect existence protected by an enchantment Varner made to protect his magnum opus from devouring itself in an act of sentimental self sabotage. The perfect world is contained inside the book while the book is contained within the world, this paradox, if inverted, might allow the party to reverse the flow of the Tome’s reality devouring magic, deconstructing the demiplane it’s constructed and reassembling the world that was in mostly the right order. All that’s required is to brave the maze of hyper-real nostalga and face off against a perfected Varner, alive again after a near century of lichdom, ignorant of any of his previous failings, but master of his domain.
