The Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy Kickstarter Page Preview!

This has been a years-long and very expensive endeavor, but we are finally getting ready to reveal the preview for the Kickstarter page that we plan to properly launch in April of this year!

We’re quite confident we can hit our base goal within just 24 hours of our launch in April of this year. However, there’s quite a lot of things that we think would really improve the end result of the project, but that are well beyond our current budget, so that’s why we made them stretch goals! Maxing out these goals is going to fill up the project with tons of stunning art from lovely femme-fatales @chaospyromancy and @qsycomplainsalot! Check out their art on their tumblr blogs to see what they’re capable of!

This Kickstarter is going to be a big jump for us, and a big risk, it’s going to take a lot of supporters to hit all these stretch goals and make A.N.I.M.’s débute game truly the best that it can be! For me in particular, my disability makes it hard for me to find other work, so the success of Eureka and A.N.I.M. as a whole is really my best shot at financial stability going forward. If you want to see these stretch goals met—and I know I sure do—show tell as many people as you can about us and our work!

While we work on a little video that is going to go at the top of the page, we are also taking feedback from y’all, the audience, both on this tumblr post and on the Kickstarter page itself! (There’s a little comment section for feedback there.) So if anything looks amiss, confusing, or you just think it could be improved, please let us know!

Queer novel recs

[A repost from my Patreon.]

By request of the one person who is pledging at a Patreon tier that lets them make meta/review requests of me, some recommendations for queer novels. Fiction-wise, I read pretty much exclusively science fiction and fantasy, with the occasional excursus into historical fiction, so that's what you're getting.

SF/F these days is, happily, getting queerer and queerer. As a general recommendation, a good place to start is the lists of winners and nominees of the Otherwise Award (formerly the Tiptree Award), which, according to their website, "encourages the exploration and expansion of gender." There's also the Lambda Literary Awards, which are awarded to both fiction and non-fiction LGBT books across various categories, including genre (mystery, romance, SF/F & horror). It's obviously not going to be a guarantee that you'll like any particular one of these books, but at least it means that somebody did.

A whole lot of the Hugo award nominees and winners this year coincidentally happened to be queer fiction, especially in the longer categories. The Best Novel winner, Arkady Martine's The Memory of Empire, is a sprawling space opera starring a diplomat who incidentally (very incidentally) happens to have some Feelings for her cultural liaison, and it's a really good book, anyway. I actually voted for Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth, which is billed as "lesbian necromancers in space," and it is pretty much exactly that. It's a murder mystery, which you'd think would be less mysterious in a book where half the characters are necromancers, but this doesn't actually help them much. I thought it was delightful and I have the sequel sitting here on my Kindle waiting for me to read it. But had Gideon not stolen my heart, I would have voted for Kameron Hurley's The Light Brigade. Everything else I have read by Hurley -- well, okay, that's just the Bel-Dame Apocrypha series, actually -- has starred kickass queer people, and this one's no exception. It's military SF in the vein of Starship Troopers or The Forever War with a really well-done time travel plot, in which the twists just keep coming. The narrator's gender is intentionally obscured for about 95% of the novel, and for added fun, they're bisexual. (Charlie Jane Anders' The City in the Middle of the Night also had queer characters but it didn't really grab me.)

(I have to admit I bounced off a lot of the Hugo novella nominees this year, including most of the queer ones, but Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone's This Is How You Lose The Time War (lesbian time-travel agents) did win, although it wasn't really my thing, and Rivers Solomon's The Deep (lesbian mermaids) appears to have gone on to win this year's Lambda instead, although that one wasn't really my thing either. Becky Chambers's To Be Taught, If Fortunate also had some lesbians and I liked that a bit better, but none of those got my #1 vote.)

I have not read it yet and cannot vouch for it but my wife is reading N. K. Jemisin's new short story collection and she says they're very good and a lot of them are queer.

Okay. So. What about less recent queer SF/F, you ask?

I started reading SF/F in the mid-90s, and there wasn't a whole lot of queer SF/F out there in the mainstream SF market, so I imprinted pretty heavily on what there was that I could find, which was basically, at first, the blink-and-you'll-miss-it gay dragonriders of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. Pern is what The Youth these days would probably call problematic in several ways, but there wasn't much else out there. I also then read Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series, which is basically iddy iddy whump fic with magic telepathic animals who love you, so I'm not saying it's a complete literary masterpiece but Confused Baby Lesbian Sineala sure spent a lot of time wondering why she was identifying so very hard with Vanyel from the Last Herald-Mage trilogy. (I also really enjoyed Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover books, especially the ones about the Renunciates (the lesbian ones), Heritage of Hastur (the gay one), and The Forbidden Tower (the one where a telepathic orgy solves everyone's problems) but owing to the, uh, terrible things we all found out about MZB after she died, I don't think I can recommend them. Or read them ever again.

Other older queer SF/F that was beloved among my friend group: Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint and its sequels are about a duelist and his boyfriend and a lot of people liked this one, but I never liked it enough to keep up with all the sequels. The first few of Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner books, however, punched me straight in the id; the protagonists are a pair of spies and thieves who are, more or less, this fantasy world's version of elves. There are a whole lot of grätúìtôūs dīåcrìtïcs and after the third book everything gets a little too horrific for me, but I really loved the first three.

But if I had to pick a top three list of authors who have written queer SF/F, this would be my list:

(1) Diane Duane. She is pretty much my favorite author ever, so I am biased here. I first discovered her work with her Star Trek tie-in novels (which, if you like Vulcans and Romulans, are amazing) and then her YA series Young Wizards, which is about teenagers who can do magic and use it to make the universe a better place and it's about ten thousand times more meaningful to me than Harry Potter ever was. But, anyway. She also has a fantasy series called The Tale of the Five, which is an everyone-is-bi-and-poly series started back before that kind of thing was even cool. Also there's a group marriage involving, like, six people, one of whom is a fire elemental. There are three books out in that series, she's still writing novellas set in it, and she swears that she's going to write the fourth and final book that we've been waiting about 25 years for.

(2) Melissa Scott. Everything I have ever read by Melissa Scott, either as a solo author or with her late partner Lisa Barnett, is queer as hell and has amazing worldbuilding. I first encountered her work when I randomly picked up Trouble and Her Friends (lesbian cyberpunk) at a used bookstore and ended up adoring it. Her other works include Shadow Man (set in a future where humanity has a whole lot more intersex people), The Kindly Ones (which has a protagonist whose gender is never specified), and The Armor of Light (alt-history involving Kit Marlowe and a demon). But my favorite series of hers is the Astreiant series, which is a Professionals AU with the serial numbers filed off, but they're filed off really well. It's a series of police procedural mysteries set in Fantasy Matriarchal Renaissance Netherlands, starring a m/m couple, and the fantasy gimmick here is that astrology is really real and really works. They're a lot of fun.

(3) Nicola Griffith. All of her books are about queer women. She has a few that are modern-day thrillers that I didn't so much care for, but I really love her SF. The first book of hers I read was Ammonite, about an anthropologist who gets sent to a planet of only women to try to figure out how they reproduce and ends up going native instead. I really adored it. I also remember really liking Slow River although I no longer remember the actual plot, except that the main character worked at a sewage facility. And it's historical fiction rather than SF, but she's probably most famous for Hild, a novel about Hilda of Whitby. I liked it a lot except for the part where it annoyed me that Griffith invented out of whole cloth the idea that women would have a special female companion and made up a name for it in Old English and everything, and most people who read the book probably believed it was a real thing. But, uh. I did really love Ammonite. I am so weak for planet-of-women books. (This is why I am so sad that I can't ever read the Renunciates of Darkover books again.)

That's about all I can think of right now. I hope some of those recs are, at the very least, new!

Ukagaka Dreams and Shining Support

The Ukagaka Dream Team community has come a long ways in the last year. We started out with just a handful of us on discord, surviving on @zarla-s ghost template+guide, google translate, and raw determination. We’ve grown to around 200 members, including 50 people currently working on a ghost, 25 of which have published a ghost of their own! Some already published their first ghost, but many began their ghost dev journey within our community, and cite the support of the UDT as a major contributor to their project’s completion and even as a source of personal growth.

Last November we even made contact with the JP Ghost Dev community, including the creator of SSP and maintainer of the AYA/YAYA language we program ghosts with! Ponapalt has been awesome in helping us catch up to our JP dev counterparts and even updating SSP with new features on our behalf!

A while ago I started a Patreon to help offset the costs of buying FTP hosting for the @ukagakadreamteam server’s ghost devs, to have in-house hosting available for those without their own website. It’s also a way for members and friends to show their appreciation for all the effort I’ve put into making our community as wonderful as it is.

I didn’t advertise it too much because I feel weird accepting money for stuff I consider a hobby, so it was just to cover the server costs. But...

Money is really tight right now.

I had to drop all of my patreon subscriptions last month. I barely scraped enough to pay for rent, my credit card is close to maxing out, and things are looking grim for the coming months.

Getting evicted would definitely put a delay on any ghost development, heh. I’d move in with my parents so I wouldn’t be homeless. Even then, I may end up on a few months hiatus due to my depressed anxiety brain telling me I’m useless and incompetent, if I don’t get some financial support from somewhere.

I have so much planned for MVSans, YBFFlowey, and even The Little Prince ghost. But I can’t see them through without help from all of you. I appreciate all of the User Reports, like I can’t even express how much they aid my development process! But screenshots won’t put food on my table, keep a roof over my head, or pay for my cat’s and my own medical bills, and ultimately that’s the biggest determination in whether I can keep up development.

I’m trying to figure out what to do with my patreon, Again, I don’t want this to read as a sad plea for patronage!! Just trying to get my thoughts out there and seek other opinions. So with that out of the way, here goes.

I’ve been plugging away at patreon for over a year now, and I can’t really seem to get any traction. I don’t know if I’m just not interesting enough, not offering enough incentive, or not advertising myself well enough, but whatever the case I have a grand total of 8 patrons (the highest it’s been was 9) and it brings in a whopping 16 dollars a month. I use this to finance my subscriptions to other people’s patreon.

I started the patreon because I was starting to feel a lot of pressure and anxiety around producing art here. Remember when I did free Haxus and Throk request days almost every week? Well many weeks I would get a LOT and it started to feel stifling. I didn’t want to feel stressed about something that was supposed to be fun. I thought that if I started doing that through patreon, it would take the pressure off, because people would have to be paying at least a token amount to make these requests. And I wouldn’t feel like I was being taken advantage of.

Now mind you no one was *actually* taking advantage of me; it’s just that when I got a request I always *felt* obliged to fulfill it, unless it was really out there, inappropriate or incomprehensible. Reducing the number, I thought, would lift that weight and make things easier and more fun again.

So I made a patreon. 1st tier ($1) was just access to WIPs that I don’t post elsewhere, and early access to finished arts. 2nd ($2) was that plus you can make requests when I’m taking them. And 3rd ($3) was that again, plus you would get your request bumped to the front of the queue.

The problem now is that my idea of reducing numbers of requests I ‘had’ to do worked a little too well. With only a handful of subscribers sometimes I’d get no requests at all when I offer. It seemed silly to have a tier for ‘priority’ requests when I would get like 2, max, at any given time they were open; and I started to feel guilty about that. So I rejigged the tiers with the priority part gone, and instead offering an exclusive monthly thank you sketch to my top tier. I hoped this might even bring some new patrons in. Alas, this has not been the case.

Which brings us to now. I’m doing these monthly sketches, and they’re a lot of fun, but only 2 or so people actually see them (I know 2 for sure because they are the ones who like and/or comment on all my posts, you know who you are :v). And that makes me sad, because I love to share my work with the fandom. When only a couple of people are seeing/interacting with pieces that have turned out to be some of my faves, it’s depressing, and I feel disconnected from the fandom that I want to be a part of... I could make the pics public after a time, but then what am I charging people for?

So this is my dilemma... I can delete my patreon and go back to doing everything For Free and try not to get in over my head again. Beat it into my head that requests are *requests* not obligations, etc. Share my work with more people again, and engage with more fans... But on the other hand, I really will be back to square 1 and the idea that I’ve ‘failed’ at patreon is *also* pretty depressing, so there’s that. And I likely won’t be able to maintain my subscriptions to the creators I follow. :<

This isn’t an anything important or an ask, but I noticed how your ❤️/reblog ratio is unfair. and it really breaks my heart. I know it’s frustrating to an artist.. but being a big fan of you and the effort you go into, TO CREATE SUCH AMAZING WORKS it honestly frustrates me to see how few reblog. I wish I could do more to promote you, I love your stuff so so much, and I wish I could do more to show it. If you ever might make a patreon I’d love to be a patron for you.

It’s… something, honestly. Tumblr as a whole has gotten weird about reblogging stuff and I don’t…understand? I just kinda… roll with it. I’m trying to gain back my reputation I had stolen, and put some art out there that I hope people like at all lol!! Feedback is…hard.

Reblogs to me, are something I value because… for every twenty reblogs, maybe 1 or 2 put responses in the tags. And that’s really what I look for. It’s how I gauge my audience and what they’re enjoying?? I have like three people I love reading their tags specifically and I respond when I feel appropriate ;w;

But gosh, you’re so sweet anon, thanks. I do put a lot of love and care into most of my asks, some of them give me excuses to do things to hurt you all emotionally, and myself, and some give me room to do something silly. I love all the reactions I get and I’m glad there’s people who vibe with my art and sense of humor - and narrative I guess??

Reblogging is honestly the best way to promote me if you like my work, I sell charms here and there which I need to package some up - I’ve been sick so I’ve been slacking on some international orders sorry, sorry guys!!! - uhhh I sell some stuff on Redbubble?? I have a Ko-fi but I never really promote it because I feel like most people do sketch commissions and I don’t have time for it?

Which… I ran a Patreon a few years ago, and I had one or two really involved patrons anda max stride of five lmao, but the stress got to me? I was working two or three jobs at the time, rarely drawing, and had trouble validating my reward tiers because it was HARD WORK…. I didn’t feel like my work was really worth it in the end and I shut it down? I don’t get enough traffic these days to warrant one because I don’t…. do much? Like I do a lot for Xig and myself but otherwise it’s just not much?

All my work is free because my traffic, as I said, is so small as is. My main blog is linked on the sidebar, there’s donation links on the top of my blog, there’s my Ko-fi link too. I just never really… promote this blog for money because it’s something I do for the fandom. For myself. I ask people to reblog stuff because it’s exposure that I might catch someone’s eye on their dashboard if they don’t follow the tags y’know?

It’s the big favor is just bring people in. But if you wanna support? Eh, I dunno. Those links are there, kiddo ;w; but thank you. The thought warms my heart, I just don’t feel my time and meager art is worth Patreon’s time when it literally would be $1-5 tiers of just supporting me, because anything else is stressful and causes me to shut down.

About the Tome of Holding

All of the manufacturing happens in Alex Ingram’s basement woodshop where he maniacally whips two carving demons (CNC routers) to do his bidding. They were designed and built a few years ago for the RPG Coasters campaign. Regular maintenance has kept them humming along producing parts going on three years.

Aside from the tools controlled by computers, Alex employs a number of hand tools to ensure that each piece is finished to the best quality.

There are three coats of finish on each Tome of Holding: a base thin poly for moisture protection, an oil blend that helps the detail in the artwork pop, then a light sanding and a final clear lacquer spray so it feels good to the touch.

The only part that will limit shipping, besides his throughput, is the artwork. Tomes with no artwork will be the first to ship out (Tier 1) as he can work on these and build up stock during the campaign. From there he’ll go down the backer list numerically and build everyone’s Tome of Holding who has artwork ready.

Alex plans to beat the delivery date of next summer in most cases and to give regular updates as to the status of things.

His latest campaign, Steve Lichman Vol. II, kind of went crazy. He and Alex have been working together for quite a few years now and have a great working relationship; primarily, trying to filter ideas Alex’s through his pen and come out with something awesome.

Everything else — Alex Ingram

Alex been working in engineering and design positions for about 15 years now and uses his woodshop in his spare time to chase the American dream.

Ideally one day he will be able to put an addition on the house and expand the woodshop into its own wing of Ingram Manor and out of the basement.

Community spotlight

This month, we have been working on basic back end set up. Login and register systems are currently being built and tested. We’ve had some continuous trouble with our current server, so we’ve found it best for development to move to a new server. We’re currently in the process of shifting everything over - there may be some downtime on the Beast Demo, we will give everyone a heads up on our social media channels when that time comes!

On the topic of the Demo - we are planning some new and exciting usability features for Demo V3. • Link generation for sharing After creating a Beast, a link will be generated. The link will be a url to your creation. You can also import a link from another creation. • Lock and unlock options Options can be locked and unlocked by clicking the lock symbol. This will ensure your option will not change even when clicking randomize. • Shift Special order Shift Special options by moving the arrows. This will change the layering order of Specials without having to choose options again, making it easier to customize.

• Loading animation A simple loading animation to appear before the Beasts image is generated. Some other additions would be an "Age" option which changes the Beasts base to the Young Base or the Grown Base. And the categorization of the Base area and Special Markings area so it's a little easier to tell options apart.

The young bases for the three starter Beasts - Dragon, Griffin and Unicorn have been completed. We are planning to have all Young bases and their 125 colors and the current catalog of Special Markings available for the next Demo V3 update.

The Hybrid bases are being worked on and will be ready for the next demo update - here are the sketches for the young Quetzal, Hippogriff and Kirin!

We’ll have news very soon about when Demo V3 will drop. For now, I can share that work has started on the next Hybrid Beasts. Here is a quick sneak peak.

Every shop you visit in Mythaura is run by a shopkeep. These shopkeepers have their own unique personalities, quests and dialogue. They will interact with you, the player, through dialogue boxes. Some moments will give you different options to respond to the NPC and the NPCs portrait will change to different expressions depending on their mood and dialogue. For example; if a player hands in a completed quest, the NPC portrait will change to a pleased expression. Each character will play a large role within the story and game play.

This month our amazing Tier 3+ supporters on Patreon voted in a poll to choose the first NPC players will interact with on site out of three options. Acting as a tutorial guide, they will welcome the player into the world, introduce them to the currency, explain factions, walk players through creating their first Beast and finally leading them into the full game. This is an early look at the Mythaura “Welcome” NPC!

Next month, patrons will decide on the Quetzal Traveller’s coloring, define their personality, their shop and their name. We’ll have more to share on the NPC system and other characters that will feature in Mythaura soon!

Tier 4 and 5 Patreon rewards have the opportunity to work with the artists to create their own Monsters and Items that will appear in-game. FAQ

So many pet games have been ruined by multi accounts, botters & scammers. I'd like to know what your policies will be on these since I am wary of investing in another site that doesn't have the staff or motivation to keep a clean playing field for all. - Anonymous

Those are completely valid concerns. As with any multiplayer online game, there will inevitability be those who will exploit it in some way or another. We will take our security and code of conduct very seriously, any player found violating that will be restricted or banned.

How many times can you create a beast from scratch? Only when you first join or are there other ways to do so? (Through an item for example) - Anonymous

You will create your first Beast upon joining Mythaura - a Dragon, Griffin or Unicorn. You’ll be able to choose any of the 125 colors on the wheel to customize their Base, Bottom and Top areas on their bodies. At the moment, this will be the only time you will be able to create a Beast from scratch. We are definitely not ruling out any other options! At this point it’s too early to say for sure.

Will there be a way to keep beasts as their 'baby' forms? - katjoyy

Yes! I realize that some people might prefer the young Beast artworks to their grown versions. There will be a method in the game to keep them from growing up - whether through consumable items or another means.

I know there is crowd funding, but will you be using Kickstarter at any point? I am more familiar with them, as I feel many are, and would rather fund through there (Dappervolk Funded within Hours.. or minuets??) I'd love to know, thanks! - bobbybi

Our first priority before planning the final crowdfunding push is delivering on an alpha and beta. We are 100% focused on building Mythaura the best it can be now and our Patreon is helping out a great deal to reach that goal.

I love Mythaura so much already, I can't explain it in words! I can't wait to see it reach it's max potential. I just wanted to know if there would be a feeding or age mechanic that would cause your creature to pass on eventually. I only ask, because I dislike the game mechanic cause death is no fun. - Anonymous

Thank you so much! Your support means the world ❤ There will be no death mechanic. We expect players to put a lot of time and effort into customizing their Beasts and it would feel like a waste to have them pass on eventually. Rest easy knowing that your Beasts will be immortal.

We are always open to suggestions! I am actively listening on all our social media channels. I take any and all suggestions to heart and note them down. But if you’re super eager to have your ideas made into reality, Tier 4 and 5 Patreon rewards can have their suggestions made into actual items in-game.

Okay so, you're making a Virtual Pet game. What do you have planned that will set you apart from other games like Flight Rising and even Neopets? I see the graphics are looking good, but do you have something else new that you intend to bring to the table with this? - formerlybees

As a long time fan and player of virtual pet games, I can say that we have a number of new ideas we are planning to bring into the genre. Some ideas inspired by other virtual pet games and some inspired by other MMOs. We have some incredibly ambitious ideas planned out that I wish I could tell you about, but we need to see if we can actually build them and get it all working!

Hi, I'm very curious as to what you look for in a portfolio for artists/writers? I'm very new to submitting portfolios and unfortunately art school doesn't really teach you this sort of thing. Thanks in advance! - rexcaliburr

For Mythaura specifically - Artists that show pieces with 2D cel-shaded style similar to our own and demonstrate cohesive anatomy for animal-like creatures. Just a couple of their best polished pieces will deliver the best first impression! For writers, a small section of writing that best showcases your creative flair and perhaps links to your previous works if any.

For artists, I recommend checking out the Dear Art Director tumblr. It’s helped me out a lot personally when I was freelancing.
