After reading your thoughts on hemingway; I want to know what you feel about murakami

i have some qualms with him.

my first issue is that, after you read a few of his books, you realize that the male narrators/main characters are all like... the same person. they feel so similar, and it’s just repetitive.

second of all, it’s a shame that he’s so weird about women because some of his plots are really interesting, and i find his writing style to be skillful. sputnik sweetheart, for example, had a fascinating premise, but the narrator’s sexual fantasies were completely jarring/out of place and degraded the quality of the text.

I have read many books by Murakami so far and therefor many critical reviews and to be honest I feel like I am the only person who doesn't mind how weird the scenes get. I agree that the randomness of his plot makes the books weird at times, however I think that what makes his books so interesting.

Haruki Murakami’s books always have a special place in my heart.

I picked up The Strange Library again after a few years and absolutely love how this book feels. It’s a quiet, understated nightmare filled with alluring illustrations. Everything about the novel feels surreal, like a dream. And in the end, when you thought you’ve got a sweet ending, it leaves a bitter after taste.

Reality can sometimes be just as cruel — or even more so — than a nightmare.

Random writing tips that work strangely well #3

This was an accident.

But in my attempt to create a character that overthinks so much that reality happens in the background/through a very heavy lens....

I ended up following a lot of writing advice, it improved my writing, and I have an overthinking character! (Although this works for pretty much every type of character, just edit the writing style to your needs.)

In essence:

Give your character a lens with which they view the world. For my character, they are a storyteller and will make a story about the clouds and the wind. For a character that has a deep knowledge about... physics and statistics for example, might make metaphors to that and notice such things more often

But don't stop it at just interests! If you can combine the lens with the internal conflict (desires, fears, current perception of the world) It has a whole layer of depth.

~What does this new information mean to the character? ~

For example, you can have the musician character notice the sounds of everyone's voices, and that will reveal what the musician character thinks of others.

You can have a character that's analytic try to decode their sensory perceptions and try to figure out what they are feelings and why. They may spend a lot of time trying to figure out their past and what specific moments made them the way they are, and they might do the same for others. This will reveal that the analytic character cares a lot about knowing everything and they might be scared to leave things up to chance/unexplained.

Jealous characters will see other people's achievements and either downplay those achievements or try to imagine themselves surpassing them. (The 'smart child' that's slowly falling behind anyone?)

AND MY BEST ADVICE IS TO PRACTICE WRITING THIS BEFORE YOU START INCORPERATING IT INTO YOUR WIP! For me, I would plot like crazy then... kind of go off the rails in my actual writing. Then I'd get upset that my writing didn't match my ideas.

And it's okay! Getting to know your character takes time.

What works for me is to write some loose notes down, then I'll do some practice snippets. Random ideas with no coherent structure or events... it's just practice for the character.

Backstory also helps! (and it doesn't necessarily have to be tragic... just informative to the character on how they should navigate the world)

If you have your character reacting and analyzing what is happening to them and what they are going to do about it, then pretty much every type of paragraph (scene description, describing another character, actions etc.) are going to be a lot more fun to read and write!

And as always - the best writing methods are the ones that work for you, take what you need, modify it for your wip, or make something up on your own. There's no need to take advice as the end all be all!

How absolutely wild must it have been for Nightmare to have like, minimum-to-no contact with mortals for hundreds of years and then the first two he has any regular close interactions with are Killer and Dust.

Like he must have a book in his castle somewhere of all the observations he kept like he was studying a new species

#UTDR #UTMV #Nightmare Sans #Killer Sans #Dust Sans #I could probably ramble for a while about the effect Killer had on him alone #But imagine being hurt by the world and carrying the grudge for hundreds of years while you wreak havoc all by yourself #And then you get one (1) roommate and he's so strange and unhinged but not at all what you expected #And then you get a second and he's so different again it's like they're different creatures even though they came from the same root world #And you get a third and he's a little more grounded but still has such wild needs and stipulations #By the time he got Cross he was probably onto his 3rd book of observations #If you dig around in Nightmare's library or office long enough I just know you can find at least one book where he's noted down what all hi #boys need and like and hate and what they refuse to do and how to handle them #Like someone leaving super detailed instructions for the care of their pampered beloved pet #Anyway Killer loves to joke to the other 3 that they should be nice to him because he ''let Nightmare adopt them'' #and he's not entirely wrong #Anyway I need to go to bed so I can work all day tomorrow (rip) goodnight gang!!

I want nothing more than to wear my favorite sweater and spray on my favorite perfume in ludicrous quantities and layer all my favorite lip glosses and go (equipped w an apple and a water bottle and a clear conscience) to my local library and sit outside w my textbooks laid out in front of me and study for hours on end while the nippy air shivers along my skin and reminds me I am alive breathing blood lumping able to engross myself in this moment. Then once I’m done studying I’ll take a walk through the park trail and sit on a rock by mossy tree roots while tight-knit canopies dapple the leaf-strewn ground around me and take to my notes app and journal about my feelings and goals and just life in general. When the shadows grow long and the warmth wears thin I will drive back home and curl up in bed and continue reading A Paradise Built in Hell by Rebecca Solnit to imbue my soul w much needed warmth. Also deep-conditioning my curls while studying tomorrow bc my curls need love. November will be kind to me I am so determined
