I'm not sure what brought it to mind, but I've been thinking of how often it seems to be assumed that Leia would be above caring about the revelation that Anakin/Vader is her birth father, because she's too awesome to care, because he didn't raise her, because she only interacted with him as a malevolent figure, and more particularly, he did terrible things to her and those she loves. She's not always presented as indifferent in that way, of course, but I've seen it a lot.

And—I mean, all those things about him are true. I get why sometimes people feel that would make the most sense of her backstory and be really satisfying as a character note and so on.

But it is wildly inconsistent with her actual response in the actual film where she discovers it. She's clearly very upset afterwards, and when she finds out Luke is going to find Vader, she urges him to essentially flee and says she wishes she could flee with him. Luke replies that she doesn't really want to, because she's always been strong.

It's true that Leia wouldn't actually ditch everyone on a critical mission to run away from the truth with Luke. It's true that she's too strong in herself to wholly want to. But I think there's a reason that her kneejerk reaction is to wish they could run away from it together. It's a terrible revelation for her and I think part of her does long for them to just escape it somehow.

I find that really interesting tbh, especially the way that this awful truth is also intrinsically tied in with her visions of Padmé and her literal psychic bond with Luke. Her feelings are messy and very human while also being inflected by the Skywalkers'... everything, and I think it could be really intriguing to see more fandom exploration of those messy human feelings from the film.

(I know the expanded universes get into this in varying ways but meh, it's more interesting in fandom.)

we got to see obi-wan and luke’s relationship in the original trilogy, and i’m so glad we’re now getting to see obi-wan bond with leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Highlights From Empire Strikes Back:

SwEET hoME aLaBaMa

Idk how to feel about Han x Leia yet but A) it’s obviously better than Luke x Leia and also,

“I love you” “I know” is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time

Yoda being so disappointed this whole movie is a whole mood

There was a lot of stuff from this that they used in the prequels as callbacks, but to me it felt like foreshadowing cause I watched the prequels first so that was cool

And then Vader doing the whole yo I’m your Dad thing and then Luke just yeeting into oblivion and then Vader being like welp that failed is a whole mood 😭😂

I was also vibing to Vader’s theme song the whole time lol

I FINALLY UNDERSTAND PETER PARKER’S STAR WARS REFERENCE FROM CIVIL WAR!

So yeah that was quite the experience but I can see why this one is really popular. See y’all in Return of the Jedi!

Some of my fave things about Star Wars because, despite my grumping, my basic affection for it is unconquerable:

1) The complex affinity between Anakin and Luke and how it’s connected to their identities as Jedi and their relationship to each other and how ultimately affirming and transformational and cosmically significant their connectedness ends up being through their mutual refusal to truly reject each other despite having many reasons to do so.

2) The very sweet and powerful yet easy and natural relationship between Luke and Leia. They just get on really well and readily understand and sympathize with and love each other. Upon discovering they’re psychic twins separated at birth, they’re just like “oh that explains a lot.” Icons <3

3) Worth its own slot: everything Leia Organa chooses to be.

4) Jyn/Cassian best ship

According to Tumblr, my blog has 117 pages of Jyn/Cassian content. I regret nothing

5) Spectacular cinematography (special shout-out to my most beloved film of all time, The Empire Strikes Back, but they’re beautiful films in general)

6) The music, which I would discuss in greater detail except I already did.

7) Lightsabers

Lightsaber duels that function primarily as characterization are my faves and my #1 lightsaber moment will always be Luke throwing his away in ROTJ, but also ... lightsabers!!

8) Cheesy fantasy adventures IN SPACE but also deeply earnest about it (esp in the OT and PT), take your cynicism and go

9) Very cool people making a lot of poor decisions (but sometimes, crucially, good ones when it matters most)

10) A persistent rejection of the sunk cost fallacy version of morality

someone said that Leia is the heart and Luke is the soul of the Rebellion/the Republic.

this is the perfect way to explain the twins- both vital but only truly successful together. Leia’s passion keeps the spark lit, but the rebellion never would have succeeded without Luke’s driving peace. similarly, Luke’s peace & power garners belief to the cause, but never would have succeeded without Leia’s constant determination and passion.

their spark is what keeps the rebellion, the republic, the galaxy itself going. The Skywalker twins are the best of their parents and are truly the combined Force; they are hope itself. Luke and Leia are Star Wars.
