Rewatching The Ritual (again) and it's time to truly reach with some probably unnecessary analysis agdkfjdh
It's ALWAYS struck me how Luke isn't using the waist or chest straps on his pack when they're hiking at the beginning. Maybe it's just because I've done long hikes with packs like that but I can't NOT notice that he isn't using them, especially since all the others ARE using them. Carrying a fully loaded pack without using the straps is super difficult because all the weight is sitting on your shoulders rather than being more evenly distributed. It's an inefficient and uncomfortable way to be carrying a heavy weight.
It wasn't until this rewatch that I realized that might be the point.
Rob's death is a weight for them all. His sudden, brutal death is something they all have to carry as they try to process it and move on. But that weight isn't being carried the same way by all of them. For as painful as it is, Hutch, Phil, and Dom don't have to carry it alone. They can rely on each other. They can lean on each other and support each other and spread the weight around to make it a little less unbearable.
Not Luke though. The weight is probably the heaviest for him out of all of them- he didn't just lose Rob, he watched him die. Watched him bleed out. He doesn't have help carrying the weight though. The people he would otherwise turn to for support blame him for the fact they have to carry this weight in the first place. And so he's left carrying this weight entirely on his own, without any help. Just an unbearable, dead weight sitting on his back with nothing to spread it around or make it easier to carry. No supports- no straps- just the weight.

So I just watched The Ritual (2017) and I have thoughts and feelings.
This thing that they use to sacrifice dom to Moder ? It had me screaming.

That's not a random shape, that's the algiz rune.
For those not familiar with runes and their associations , algiz represents - the elk, protection, warding off evil, connection to the gods.
THEY WERE LITERALLY ASKING MODER FOR HER PROTECTION IN EXCHANGE FOR THE OFFERING AND THE PRODUCTION TEAM ON THIS FILM ACTUALLY DID RESEARCH INTO RUNES (as far as I can tell, I need to analyse all those ones carved on trees)

i know people love the monster from The Ritual and I do too but my favourite parts are when the environments blend into these fucked up nightmare visions of shop shelving and florescent lights in the middle of a forest. David Bruckner makes the environment it's own creature in The Ritual, The Night House, and Hellraiser and he does it so well and I love it!!!

Daily Fic Highlight: Clearing
Since I've been publishing fic on Ao3 for over 10 years, there's a lot of it. And because I'm a person who doesn't want to have what I wrote fade away (hence putting it into an archive), I had the idea to look at my kudos email and talk a little bit about the fic in that email that I found best/most exciting to be there. It would have been nicer to start this on 1/1, but at least it's still January.
So today, luckily enough for me, someone left kudos on:
"Clearing" is a second-person POV short story about a woman who gets lost in the woods during the midsummer solstice and has a transformative erotic encounter with Moder, the monster from the movie The Ritual (2017). 17k, E, F/F or F/Other depending on how you think of it.
The premise was given to me as a challenge by my friend @tejoxys when I asked for something strange to write a readerfic about in celebration of completing my tax return.
I could have been more casual about it, I suppose, but it was fun for me to really dig into why this was happening and, well, get weird with it. It's labelled as readerfic, but I'm not sure if it counts as exactly that, since I gave "you" a number of specific characteristics and memories and did not attempt what I think of as the fool's task of writing a blank vessel.
A sample:
Further in, and yet further. Trees towered around you, subsuming you in the deep green that was Midsummer’s true darkness. To you it felt like the green spread far beyond the leaves, filling the air, filling your lungs, ancient life newly added to your own. You shivered in the heat. You took deeper breaths. Perhaps you thought, I would die for this. Perhaps you thought, I would kill for this. But with every step you grew more alive, and there was no one here to kill.

I rewatched The Ritual last night and I think it was for the 5th or 6th time and I’ll still continue doing it and that gave me the motivation to post some drawings I did of the 4 main boys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was easy for me to draw Hutch and Luke(since they are my favorites) but I kinda strugle at drawing Dom. Phil was alright.
I totally love that movie and I’m very glad with how these drawings turned out and I wanna draw even more from the movie.

The Ritual brain rot is setting back in, and I got thinking about the dreams they all had in the cabin that first night. We later find out Dom dreamed of his death, and it's heavily implied that's what Hutch and Phil dreamed about too. Luke is the only odd one out, having a strange dream set in the liquor store before being marked by Möder. It makes sense, of course, that Luke didn't dream of his death- he's chosen by Möder and is the only one not to die by the end, so of course his dream was different.
Except it wasn't. Not really.
The liquor store robbery, Rob's death, Luke's freezing- all of it irrevocably changed who Luke is as a person. His world is shattered that night, and his sense of his self is shattered along with it. Luke isn't the same person after the robbery and no matter what he does, he can never go back to being that person again. That person is gone. Dead. Nothing more than a memory for Luke to mourn alongside his friend as he tries to pick the pieces back up. His friends dream of their final moments at the hands of Möder, but Luke- Luke dreams of his final moments as the person he used to be.
All four friends dream of their deaths that first night in the cabin. One of them just happened to have died six months before

The people have spoken once again! The Ritual reigns victorious over The Green Knight for this closer on the first season of Basement screenings. But don't fear, I have the intention of watching The Green Knight in my spare time at some point.
Very happy to share this personal fav with y'all though!
What?: The Ritual is a relatively niche horror film from 2017 with a slow but atmospheric build-up to the horror.
When four friends go on a hiking trip to mourn a recent loss amidst their group, they don't expect to spend several nights lost in the woods. They have each other for company, but something else also seems to follow their trail.
Why should you watch it?: I know my demographic, so I could just leave you with the wise words of @sawtual
Tumblr media
But there's more! There's dread! Is there something supernatural going on? Is it just trauma-induced paranoia? Is There Something In These Woods With Us?
There are so many ways in which Yellowjackets mirrors The Ritual. A lot of it is in the visuals, which go beyond the usual spooky-wooky nature cult stuff. This is no Midsommar. The Ritual will put the smell of damp moss and dirt into your nose as you scour the screen for any sign of whatever is following these poor souls through the wood.
If the story doesn't grip you, the visuals are a feast to the eyes.
By the way, Lottie enjoyers, did I mention that there's a recurring deer metaphor?
Some warnings!: There are moments where there is explicit gore occuring with both humans and animals. Beyond that, the film is mostly psychological in its scares.
When?: Sunday September 10 at 10PM/22:00 CEST!
Link to the kosmi room will be shared ~20 minutes in advance
