I need to talk about the Avengers.

I just want to express how much I hate that the Avengers aren’t on the hook for all their time travel nonsense bc they were “supposed to” do it and Loki is on the hook bc he wasn’t.

I mean, I am glad that they addressed it right away - that Loki was inadvertantly caught up in the Avengers' time meddling, and that apparently they were doing what they were supposed to and that's why none of them were on trial, but - there are two things going on here that I have issue with. One is, of course, the scapegoating of Loki once a-fucking-gain, but the other is that there's a legitimate problem inherent in framing the Avengers' deeds as The Right Thing So There Are No Consequences, especially because it directly leads to Loki (and only Loki) being scapegoated since, apparently, someone's got to answer for all of this.

Why Were The Avengers Supposed to Undo the Snap??

Of all the possible options they could have gone with (such as reversing time back to just before the Snap happened), going back through time to gather the stones and use them to undo things five years later is, like, one of the worst?? Best case scenario, it implies that the TVA is ridiculously incompetent in managing the sacred timeline and worst case scenario, it implies that the TVA is ridiculously adept in managing the sacred timeline, if their goal is to have it be the worst possible timeline anyone could end up in.

The Avengers may have done an arguably good thing in undoing the Snap - I don't disagree that those people should've lived - but they also royally fucked over a lot of things in the process and left Earth (and presumably many many other worlds) in total post-Snap chaos while fucking off to die be with their families and/or start new lives.

This goes back to the plan itself. One of my many issues with Endgame is that not only is the plan convoluted and, frankly, stupid, but also I have a real problem with the concept of the Avengers just saving the world as they see fit, regardless of whether or not that's actually the best thing to do. (If the Russos hadn't done such a shit job with explaining what the Accords were actually supposed to do, then maybe this could have been addressed somehow - like, okay, together we may have the brains and resources to carry off this plan but does that mean we're the ultimate authority on whether or not we should? Maybe we should check with, like, the UN or something about this? [and it’s entirely possible the UN was mentioned and I have forgotten it bc I’ll be honest, I watched Endgame once and have bitched about it ever since.] I digress.)

The narrative in Endgame and into the MCU beyond plays like the Avengers only care about saving the world when they stand to personally gain from it (they want their friends and family back, they want to feel like they didn't fail, they have unilaterally decided that what they want is the Best Thing for everyone) and once the Good Deed is done and the smoke clears from the battlefield, there's no concern with saving the mess of the world they created.

TFatWS addressed so many of the problems with the post-reverse-Snap, which implies that the MCU (both in-universe and out) is aware that things are fucked up now. People's lives were literally ruined by what the Avengers did. Refugees are displaced. Humans are coming back to a world where they've been dead for five years and their loved ones have moved on and their homes have been sold and their bank accounts have been closed and they have no jobs. And that’s just on Earth. Yet no one (again, both in-universe and out) feels the need to hold the Avengers accountable for any of this.

Plus, what about the people who died as a result of the Snap but not from the Snap directly? What about the planes that fell from the sky when the pilots turned to dust? The cars that crashed and collided when the drivers poofed? Etc. Like, fuck all of those people I guess?

And who, exactly, is "supposed to" clean up the Avengers' mess now that the actual Avengers are either dead, old and living on the moon, or retired? Is it on Sam's shoulders alone (or, rather, Sam and Bucky's)? Is Peter Parker (yknow, the 15 year old Nick Fury went and recruited bc there was no one else) supposed to be fixing things?

The TVA takes responsibility for none of this. They sit back in their nightmare DMV-esque office and claim that all is as it should be but my question remains: please explain to me how the outcome of the post-Snap universe is ultimately satisfactory to anyone besides the Avengers?

There's also the fact that Loki figures out right away that the Avengers were engaging in some time travel shenanigans ("the cologne of two Tony Starks is hard to miss” lmfao Loki you snarky shit). Loki recognizes that there's been an opportunity created of which he can take advantage, but he isn't responsible for creating it. The Avengers messed up and created that opportunity so, even if they were supposed to be doing what they were doing, there are still no consequences for the fact that they made a mistake that allowed Loki to then branch off and create a new timeline.

Let's also say that we accept that the Avengers were supposed to undo the Snap exactly as they did. Okay, sure. BUT:

- Was Steve, then, also supposed to decide to fuck back off to the 1940s and marry Peggy (which created two Steves, right? The one who was married to Peggy all along and the one who was in the ice?? The TVA is just okay with two Steves?)?

- What is the actual point of Stephen Strange having the time stone and using the time stone both to gain the advantage over Darmammushumuuyourmom (I’m sorry, I can’t remember his real name) and to look at all the possible timelines to figure out how to defeat Thanos?

- How is it possible that there are 14 million potential timelines in which the Avengers failed if the TVA’s entire thing is that there can only be one true ring timeline to rule them all? The fact that Stephen can look ahead and determine so many outcomes based on the choices they're making would mean that people do have free will and that their actions aren't automatically dictated by what's “supposed to” happen. They had to make the right choices in order to get to the one timeline in which Thanos failed.

- What’s the point of Stephen having to protect the time stone, anyway, if there are presumably a few others in Casey’s drawer?

- On that note, if there are a lot of infinity stones hanging around in the TVA’s desk drawers, what makes the original six the specific, correct ones that Thanos had to collect in order to pull off the Snap and why is it then those specific six the ones that the Avengers had permission to go back through time to get in order to undo the Snap as the Timekeepers intended?

- And actually, in fact, if there’s only one sacred timeline and anyone who fucks it up without permission gets “reset” (aka made nonexistent, along with their timeline branch) then, again, why does Stephen have to protect the time stone? Either anyone who steals it was supposed to, or their timeline gets eliminated and the theft ceases to matter.

- Less significant but also still kinda significant is how Agents of SHIELD figures into all of this. The TVA knows that Loki killed Coulson but they don't know (or don't care?) that Coulson was brought back to life and proceeded, with his team, to go on and get heavily involved in time travel and going back and forth and bringing people from the past into the present? So the TVA is okay with Daniel Sousa leaving his timeline but not with Loki leaving his?

... I have literally confused myself with all of this, so if anyone followed my train of thought here, congratulations and maybe you can explain it to me lmao.

But here's my ultimate point: the sacred timeline that the TVA is tasked with maintaining is not sensical or linear. It's full of gaps and holes and people taking matters into their own hands to determine both their own fates and the fates of others. As a result, a lot of people suffer kinda needlessly based on the events in said timeline, and apparently it's perfectly fine for all of this nonsense to occur so that everyone else has some element of control -

- but Loki is literally the only one who is told uh, actually, no, you are supposed to live a shitty life and die a pointless death and there's not a goddamn thing you can do about it bc it's supposed to happen.

What in the actual fuck kind of logic is that???

Thus, either the TVA (and the Timekeepers) are grossly incompetent, or else they're extremely competent and also really fucking shitty beings who just enjoy the needless suffering of others.

And somehow this is all Loki's fault!!

And then Mobius has the fucking audacity to say, to Loki's face, “you only exist to prop up everyone else and you, Loki Odinsonson Laufeyson mischief god and king of space lol, do not have any inherent worth or value as your own person. You were born to be a scapegoat and you will die a scapegoat and there's no getting around that, if we have anything to say about it.”

To quote Loki, in a very twisted way - yes, it's funny. It's absurd.

Does, uh, does this make sense? At some point I crossed over from meta-writing into straight up ranting and so, well, here we are.

i just spent many hours reading as much x-men: first class comics as i could get my hands on, and oh MAN that series is so much fun. aside from the good characterization moments (surprisingly frequent for a series i rarely see mentioned by other fans?), it was so much fun to see the timeline/logistical details of how the institute worked with only five students. and how charles concluded that it wouldn't be an accredited school for awhile! that was really fun and i enjoyed it!

#i'm always low-level thinking about doing a sorrowful and immaculate hearts-style rewrite of the xmen so this was very useful info lmao #sb and l rambles #sb and l reads comics #xmen #there were also some EXCELLENT characterization moments of course. but those are for a different post #i have Many Thoughts about this series -- specifically the characterizations and the context and the time travel nonsense #(would it really be an xmen series without time travel nonsense?)#i think i want to post more frequent xmen meta here #both because i'm more confident about my thoughts now and also because i'm not so intensely hyperfixated #and therefore a lot less desperate for validation #but not tonight! tonight is sleep time!#(also to write meta i feel like there are still some basics i should get down. i want to read the storm solo serieses and #some standalone scott and jean issues. but that's also a problem for another day)

if i may ask (i tried to look if this was already answered but tumblr is a broken website, so im sorry if im asking something that has been answered), does the way that Sol deal with jealousy change once they're in a realtionship with MC?? bc i believe all the asks you linked are pre-relationship, no?? or, at the very least, that is the implication i picked up.. bc, i will fully admit, the idea of deep romance!Sol being jealous and possessive and like.. not repressing those emotions, is something i am very intrigued to learn more about lmao (esp if its healthy and moderated jealousy/possessiveness, which like.. considering how Sol has dealt with unwanted emotions in the past, is not something i assume will happen lmao-- i am fully predicting that someday, maybe even not with jealousy, think funky lil repressed bean will just have their feelings fully blow the fuck up lmao rip)

The short answer: Sol getting 'jealous' / 'possessive' (in their way, not entirely in what is typical / traditional) does not happen once at the point of being in an actual relationship

The much longer answer (+a clarification first):

By 'possessive', I mean a very childish version of it. It's something that Sol recognizes is a ridiculous way to feel in the first place, and outside the meta character talks here on the blog, it's unlikely MC would ever know about Sol's little 'flare-ups' of it

It was something that was a lot stronger / happened more often when they were both much younger (especially when new people entered MC's life), and was a bit like, they're my friend, why are you talking to them / what do you want from them ?? 😒 It was (and still is) a knee-jerk reaction manifesting from Sol's fear of getting abandoned / left behind, and is something that's lessened considerably as they've both gotten older (and even more after the events of eight years ago). Now all Sol wants is for MC to have some semblance of normalcy again, even if that's not 'with' them / 'because' of them

What Sol really struggles with is—in their eyes—being a 'burden'. They don't want to bother anyone (especially MC) with something they perceive as 'trivial' as their emotions when others are already dealing with their own things

You might see it in the update depending on choices (though with a different emotion than jealousy), but when Sol gets to the point where they can't fully ignore something / push it away, they will leave the situation causing those feelings entirely before they even have that chance to 'blow up', as these kinds of strong emotions that they can't fully control give them a deep, deep anxiety

((In Sol's case, they're also not the type to 'blow up' at all; it'd be more 'spilling over into anxious and nonsensical rambling' or 'getting very sharp and snippy with their words as a defense mechanism' (though a much rarer reaction and not as mean or pointed as someone like Cían would be; it'd be something like a very sharp, very flat, "I don't wanna talk about this anymore.")))

Jealousy itself has a lot of strong connotations, and with Sol, it's something that's way more abstract of an emotion in them. They recognize it, understand that they feel it, but don't have a name for it as it's not something they really let themself acknowledge in the first place, and thus is not something that fully forms. To them, it's a vague sense of, seeing you with this person / hearing you talk about them stings and makes me deeply uncomfortable, and I don't know how to handle that so I'm just going to pretend this weird feeling doesn't exist.

As for why that jealousy disappears once in a relationship: they're both with the person they want to be with, have both chosen the other person, so there's nothing for them to be jealous over / feel weird about. Sol trusts MC, completely and unconditionally, and that will never change !

As a smaller, related note: Sol would never agree to being in a relationship if at any point they thought MC was either settling for them or would fall out of love with them/leave them. This contributes to that implicit trust and nonexistent jealousy

Okay okay first of all sorry for coming into your inbox to ramble again, if you ever want me to shut my mouth about this old man just say so and I'll stop, I'm aware that my ramblings aren't exactly the highlight of your day lmao.

Second of all I've been thinking about why Godrick, who's so infamous for fleeing or just straight up begging for mercy when faced with a tough opponent / possible defeat, does nothing like that during his fight with the Tarnished. Yeah yeah I get it, meta-wise it's for gameplay reasons and there's no lore reason. Nobody on the writing team probably thought about it. But let's pretend they did. Or like let's just ignore meta I mean. And it's like, I can't really think of a resson for that behaviour. Yes, first he resorts to grafting that dragon head, that makes sense, that's still a trump card of sorts, and at that point he still probably thought that the character will be just another quickly finished Tarnished. But when that phase gets tough, why doesn't he employ his usual "tactic?" So far the only thing I could come up with is that story-wise, that part of the fight happens so fast that he doesn't really have the time to register that it might be the right time to attempt to save his ass. That or maybe he has at least a tiny bit of shame and thought that groveling to a Tarnished would really be a new low? But mostly I'm kinda surprised that his last words are like...fairly okay with dying? I mean, sure, he's like "Noooo, I am the Lord of all that is Golden :(((" and repeats what I can only assume to be some kind of lineage motto, but those last words aren't exactly the ones you'd from someone who is described by several people as a giant coward, or at least that's my opinion. The only idea I have is that maybe since he was focused on proving himself, I guess he might have come to the conclusion that dying like a man instead of going full coward mode may do it? Honestly I'm just throwing darts at a wall and hoping one of them hits the mark at this point.

Do you happen to have any sort of opinion or thoughts on this event or anything to do with it? Also apologies for any potential nonsensical sentences, it's nearly 2 am so I'm a little out of it (more than I am usually)

No need to apologise!! I actively encourage anyone to come talk to me about their favourite characters or lore tidbits or anything, and your takes and thoughts on Godrick are always so fun to read, I enjoy them a lot!

You're right; for someone who's described as being cowardly, Godrick really wasn't cowardly at all during his boss battle. He does call them 'lowly Tarnished, playing as a lord' and all that, so maybe he really just doesn't want to grovel to a Tarnished... but part of me wonders if it's a case of the victors writing history; if Godrick was never quite so cowardly, it's just that he lost and he's being written about that way. I have no basis for that other than the difference between the way he's described and the way he acts with us though, that's just a little theory! Otherwise... maybe he was just so far gone by then that he could only accept death, or lament it... I'm not sure; it's really interesting to think about though. Maybe he really did grow a spine just in time for his death to arrive ABDBSJDBSDNS...

lads I am feeling FRAGILE

With 执子之手, WKX is quoting 诗经·邶风·击鼓 (Book of Songs). The context:

死生契阔，与子成说执子之手，与子偕老

No matter what happens, I made you a promise: To take your hand in mine, til death do us part [T/N under the cut, though I’d like to add here that in a modern context these lines seem to be ubiquitously taken as romantic. The original meaning is disputed whether it’s lovers or comrades-in-arms. At the end of the linked article, the author quips “some people may say there is an easy way to resolve this conflict...” (当然啦，我看到有人为了调和二者，认为“战友”就是“恋人”，“恋人”就是“战友”，提出了“基友情“的说法，这个嘛……)]

Some thoughts on this, mostly derived from this meta (in Chinese)

1. The second, unsaid half of the line is 与子偕老, which is more literally “grow old together”. In the face of ZZS’s mortality, with their time together feeling more measured by the day, WKX must feel that he dare not say these words out loud. YBY is allegedly coming with help, but WKX has already been disappointed once, on that night where it seemed like the sky and the heavens were crying with him as well. No cure is guaranteed - the only thing that is certain is ZZS in front of him now, happy and laughing and telling him that he has a home here. So, instead of alluding to promises neither of them can keep, WKX instead continues with 坐看云舒, saying that he’ll enjoy these days as they are, and appreciate the simple joys of life: lying back on the grass to watch the clouds unfold, his lover’s hand in his. (I really like how this parallels the “life is just three meals day” sentiment they toss back and forth throughout the show.)

2. This has to be taken in the context of the whole conversation on names they had. WKX is responding directly to ZZS’ initial toast, quoting how WKX explained his name back to him (天涯孤鸿无根行客). This is WKX’s line with the characters for “Zishu” bolded: 执子之手，坐看云舒. I just think it’s neat that while 子 is literary “you”, it also emphasises that the “you” here is ZZS (unlike Youku with the “a” lover stuff*). Also, the second half rly gives the vibe of the Person A, looking at the stars: wow so beautiful / Person B, looking at Person A: yeah. [since it’s sit (坐) and watch (看) the clouds unfold (云舒)/Zishu (舒)]

For Youku to add “lover” in there is certainly... a choice. On one hand, the translator went ALL IN with making explicit the romantic connotations of the poem. On the other hand, generalising it to “a” lover makes it somewhat nonsensical and gives me vibes of “ah just two bachelors, staring into each other’s eyes across the table because they’re not gay, just waiting for young maidens to come sweep them off their feet”. Edit: I just realised the first time he says it in this scene Youku uses “the” instead, but IMO this is still very impersonal. It feels like he’s parroting a history book. This is the reason I completely missed even the “lover” bit the first time around bc i was like right theyre just quoting poetry again lmao

T/N: 1. 死生契阔 is literally “life and death, separated and reunited” (契阔=离合). 2. 偕老 might sound familiar if you kept up with shl concert shenanigans. Heizi laoshi said 祝贺他们白头偕老 and then everyone proceeded to collectively lose their minds. 3. I translated as “til death do us part” because “grow old together” just sounds so bland and I wanted to bring in the marriage connotations that 偕老 has. idk if it’s too much localisation though 😔

I think this is a GREAT example of how translation is so contextual & dependent on interpretation (especially literary Chinese, which as my friend said, is a whole fuck). If we were going with the ~soldiers~ meaning of the poem, I’d translate it more like

No matter what happens, we swore an oath To go hand in hand, until the end

Although that discards the 老 aspect of it, which I’m not 100% on what the poet was trying to say with that ngl but I guess it could be like “we swore that we WOULD make it out of this battle to grow old together”. Which obviously doesn’t work with “until the end” because that’s so fatalistic, but brain zero cannot think of nice way to translate surviving

I've mentioned it before but I'll say it again because I'm being CANDID: All of your muses are absolutely incredible and so very well-developed, I see all of them as relatable characters, characters you'd be able to see in real life even if some have supernatural abilities (like Yoojin UwU), characters who I WISH TO HUG BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN THROUGH A LOT, GROUP HUG PLEA---

Pls allow me to go one by one, I'll try to be concise as to not send a SUPER LONG ask (emphasis on try lmao wiehuwhd)

I see Mana as a robust tree that's remained standing regardless of harsh weather, still strong and flourishing no matter what. Owning a tough shell, but still showing care and fondness in her own way. I adore the way she doesn't tolerate nonsense and she'll tell you things as they are. I also really like that part of her still holds onto hope because she met wonderful people she keeps dear in her heart; people who allowed her to know that not everything is dark out there. And I love the complexity of her story and the connections she has with characters of this and other blogs of yours ;W;

Raphael makes think of that needed relief after a long period of undeniable stress? AS IN...his personality is so NICE and you can't help but feel at ease because of how easygoing he can be? I also enjoy his creativity, even if his some of his recipes don't sound like a good idea (IWHEDIUWHED), the light bulb of his imagination is very unique; not even in a million years would I be able to come up with such strange combinations in dishes 🤣

Lamon reminds me of a quiet whirlwind? The type you don't see coming. I JUST...feel Lam can be seen initially as quiet or reserved but when you get to know more about him or when he allows himself to open up (or when something specific happens), you see this EXPLOSION of determination and also craziness in his life (C.oca.ine Donald and dealing with Raphael's odd recipes, anyone, I'M---) and I adORE THAT, he's also so very smart and I support his little veggie garden UwU

Yoojin makes me think about a PRECIOUS FLOWER!! YELLOW FLOWER!! The one you'll see in a vast garden and you can't help but SMILE because it's so beautiful!! Yoojin's soul, the way he sees life is so WONDERFUL to me, I adore that he still sees the bright side of mostly everything (except Bonghwangs, I guess---aHEM) despite what he went through; I adore that he chose to see light in life. I also enjoy how his presence is so cheery and bright; PURE SEROTONIN!!!!

Patrick, BELOVED PROFESSOR---he reminds me of an enigmatic riddle that's softly whispered; the answer to it is infinitely precious but you have to take your dear time to unveil it. He also reminds me of a gentle breeze in the middle of the ocean, the type you breathe in as to feel reinvigorated. HE'S SO?? WONDERFUL, he's also been through so much and yet he chooses to be kind, to be merciful, to be gentle; to be supportive. He has such a good heart AND I ADORE the many sides of him, his reserved side, his clever side, his slightly mischievous side, his soft side, his awkward side, his flustered side, his lil' shy side, his (EVERY SINGLE ONE) side; INCLUDING!! hello i'd like to start this with a 🥺🥺🥺 ALEX YOU COULD NEVER RAMBLE FOR TOO LONG I ABSOLUTELY LISTENING ( READING ) YOUR THOUGHTS AND METAS AND HEADCANONS- 🥺 okay now that that's out of the way, these are all so thoughtfully written out!! i think they're all very spot on alex so let me go thru them all one by one:

mana: you're definitely spot on about her resiliency- low key i used to actually associate her more with fire, but these days?? she gives off a lot of earthy vibes....must be the capricorn moon in her jsdklfsjd but also i've always had trouble with explaining how she shows care...bc like i've said before, she's the kind of person who would tell you the truth as a kindness. if she thinks you're messing up, she'll call you out on it bc if she really didn't care, she'd let you fall. of course, that doesn't always necessarily translate well in her personal relationships and that was even more apparent before her main verse. and yes!! i think her story ( combined with calum's ) is one of my most complex storyline but that might come from having to write them for a grade FJSKLDJFL

raphael: honestly, i can say a lot of my muses are outliers to my types, but the real outlier might actually be ray...unlike the others he honestly doesn't have much to hide, the way yoojin and patrick might, and he's not nearly as wary of new people the way mana and lam might. overall he's a just a genuinely nice dude who likes to have a good time...also he's most...bro-like ( which is surprisingly very refreshing to write once in a while ) and YOU'RE RIGHT he's the guy you wanna hang out with after work!! as for his recipes i actually used the protagonist of food w*ars as a major inspiration- it's a fun show to watch if you're not looking for anything too deep although the characters reactions to the food are...interesting jsdklfjskdl although the recipes at the beginning of the series are pretty reasonable and i myself would love to try to make them sometime....

lamon: lam, oh lam!! he really is a quiet whirlwind!! sometimes i think i have trouble with describing his personality because on one hand, in comparison to ray, he's a lot more reserved and level-headed!! he takes his commitments very seriously and is more or less the archetype of a good student....has lots of anxieties about life in general. but then on the other hand, he also can be so reckless and foolish at times, it makes me wonder if he's the bigger idiot between him and ray...bc at least with ray and his cooking, it's in a contained environment. so i think a quiet whirlwind is a very accurate description FJSKLDJF and his vegetable garden!! that's definitely something i want to explore more too in the future!!

yoojin: A FLOWER!! he really is one- i can say he's like one of those petals flying in the wind...but yes!! i find his perspective on life to be quite inspirational and like his outlook on life in general to emotionally very attractive...i based a lot of him on a*ang from alta who really is just a joy to watch and i wanted to translate that same feeling of joy onto yoojin who also has a millennium's worth of wisdom and experience to draw on :D

patrick: AN ENIGMATIC RIDDLE!! u're so right tho and i think that suits him perfectly, considering that he's obsessed with puzzles as well....it would only be fitting that he would be a puzzle himself with a hidden answer that warms the heart :'D ( although hyuk most definitely has all the pieces needed...and gets all the hints sjdklfsj ). i'm also happy that you pointed out that he chooses to be merciful despite what he's gone through bc when i was making him, i actually was using the concept of mercy and forgiveness as part of his character design ( lmao his last name being 'grace' and then his adoptive parents have names of a similar theme )....i have many thoughts there especially when it's relation to hyuk too but i will talk about that at later time :D BUT YES ALL HIS SIDES!! i didn't think he was going to get this much development but honestly?? they all keep popping up!! like daisies!! and they all more or less still are cohesive together so i'm glad that you like him...bc i also love ur grumpy detective whom i am always hungry to know more about :'D

hmmm. no. but has there ever been (on my blog)? lmao

not to get too meta about it, but i've never thought there's any real "value" to most of the shit talk i do here. it's mostly bitchiness. TTB was a good target because she's a genuinely cruel and awful person - but i didn't know that when i started, i just thought she sucked and wanted to talk with other people about it. i thought a lot of the big kaylors were truly just... dumb and it bothered me to see them fooling people into thinking they weren't. and i don't feel like i can actually "save" anyone from being misled or hurt by TTB's rhetoric, so i won't pretend like i'm adding anything of use here. i'm just being bitchy.

maybe more to your point, though, is that, lately, kaylors have really... lost their influence, i guess you could say? it's a dying branch on the taylor fandom tree. so there's even less value in picking it apart these days.

i must have said this before but like. hair as a vector for contention & change & love. for example (in no particular order) gemile's haircut triggering the final row between her and j'hani; her hair going white on the trip to morrowind; gold leaf moor's custom that the sons of a deceased father shave their heads and the daughters wear their hair loose (& lavinia getting tatianus to shave her head anyway); on the 2 occasions gem sees j'hani again after a long separation, she immediately points out that his hair is longer; ria being constantly identified by her hair ("fine", "silky", "golden", because it's so starkly different from gem's) etc etc etc

honorable mention to tatianus' 250-year psychological struggle with the length of his hair ("the inevitable 'a haircut would do you a world of good, my boy'"; "stop this nonsense and come home, would you please? Have you thought of cutting your hair, Tatianus Marcianus?")

there's definitely other stuff that comes back in my writing but it's all generic. like home belonging identity family etc etc cry me a river

( brutally honest ship meme ) - I have never had an ask trigger my fight or flight response so quickly before. LMAO But it’s cool; I don’t think I’ve publicly talked about either ship since…I wanna say 2019? And never in much depth, so maybe it’s time to do so.

The TL;DR version is: I’m glad they make other people happy, but neither ship is for me. Long, detailed version under the cut.

So a big part of my problem with j-hnlock is that…in general, I’m not a fan of Watson’s character. There are some I like well-enough—YuuMori’s is a good egg and Nigel Bruce’s, David Burke’s, and Edward Hardwicke’s all had their moments where I really enjoyed them (I still quote Bruce’s “certainly not! I’m dead” on a frequent basis). But most Watsons are just…a nonentity for me? Watson’s sorta…there. Which I realise is his purpose in the original stories: he’s the lens through which we see Holmes, so he’s gotta be unobtrusive enough to not interfere with the story while still providing a counterpoint to Holmes’s nonsense. The problem, for me, is that a lot of variations translate that to either making Watson extremely flat or…frankly a bit of an annoying killjoy. (Like…we’re here to see Holmes’s shenanigans. The audience knows what Holmes is doing isn’t appropriate/safe/good/etc. Watson knows Holmes isn’t going to listen to him. But sometimes it feels more like the writer doesn’t realise all this and is more interested in using Watson to preach about how bad Holmes is…which invariably leaves me with the feeling of “why, exactly, are any of us, especially Watson, here?”) That aside, I also really dislike how the BBC version handled Watson’s character and I dislike his actor as a person, so… -gestures vaguely and distressedly-

My secondary problem with the ship is that I don’t enjoy how the fandom has handled it. I tried very hard to like j-hnlock when I first entered the fandom—it was where all the fics were at and I was used to, while reading Fable fics, reading everything in the fandom without regard to if I shipped it or not. But I found myself constantly frustrated that, in every single fic, neither Sherlock nor John sounded like themselves—not even in an AU sense. And I got really tired of seeing Sherlock constantly infantalised and John treated as if he were incapable of doing wrong; it got to a point where I realised I had enjoyed absolutely nothing I’d read for the ship and needed to stop forcing myself to read it. (The way that people who don’t ship them have been treated by shippers is also appalling to me and furtherly ruined any interest in the ship; I just want nothing to do with that kind of environment.) Which is a really ramblely way to say: fic and meta wise, I find it to be an extremely boring ship that seems to thrive more on wishful thinking, and fans demanding that it must happen, than its own merits. I’m sure someone out there has written it interestingly, but I no longer have any desire to find out.

I will admit, I’ve seen some interesting ideas for AUs in the j-hnlock tag, which I desperately wish were for another ship so I could go have a look. And I have a couple prompts for j-hnlock fics I’ve been given that I’m curious about writing—the only reason I haven’t is that I think they’d be a very different tone than what people would expect and I’m not sure how they'd be received or if I want to deal with that.

With regards to sherl-lly, my feelings have really nothing to do with an objection to the ship itself. I’m sure it’s a lovely ship. However, I’ve been in relationships that had their canon dynamic and, honestly, from both sides? It fucking sucked. They were miserable experiences and I never want to repeat them. I ended up blocking the tag cuz, frankly, that’s my issue and something I need to work on, on my own, without getting annoyed at ship content, but it helps me to not see it every time I go in the fandom tags.

Like I said, I'm sure both ships have their good points, but I'm not really interested in either.

So this definitely sounds like something I would say, but I no longer remember the context of when and why I said it lmao. Let me see if I can ramble my way into some kind of explanation. My opinions on Wei Wuxian’s and Jiang Cheng’s dynamics are likely somewhat more romanticized and/or unpopular compared to fandom though. (Maybe?)

I think that in a lot of ways Wei Wuxian feels much more responsible for Jiang Cheng than he does for Jiang Yanli. Both his tendency to infantilize Jiang Cheng, to believe that he knows best what Jiang Cheng needs, and his stubborn belief that he must shield Jiang Cheng from not only danger but also the burden of his love and his pain have strong overbearing elder sibling vibes. It’s different from the overprotective little brother persona he has around Jiang Yanli where he unquestioningly leans on Jiang Yanli for comfort in a way that never really does with anyone else. Of course, that could be because Jiang Yanli is his elder sister, but Wei Wuxian genuinely seems to take his role as Jiang Cheng’s shixiong pretty seriously when it comes down to it. Even if neither of them ever voice those labels directly.

It’s clear that Wei Wuxian loves him. That he protects Jiang Cheng in really the only way he’s ever learned how – by taking all the burdens onto himself. And he carries a lot of guilt for encroaching on a family he was never supposed to be a part of, for disrupting Jiang Cheng’s relationship with Jiang Fengmian, and for the constant conflict between Jiang Fengmian and Madam Yu. With all of this later compounded by the overwhelming guilt he feels after the Jiang Sect massacre, is it really any wonder that Wei Wuxian’s first priority was to make sure Jiang Cheng comes out of it all happy and safe and alive regardless of the ramifications for himself?

So if after everything Wei Wuxian selfishly and selflessly does to protect him, to make sure Jiang Cheng is safe, that he has the means to revive their sect – Jiang Cheng then dies in Nightless City because of Wei Wuxian? This is why I don’t think he would have even made it to the cliff to throw himself off. In the mindset he was already in before the battle began, in the agony of his grief, staring at his dead shidi, who he swore to Madam Yu, to Jiang Fengmian, to Jiang Yanli, to himself, that he would protect at all costs, who carries his golden core because giving it away hurt him less than watching Jiang Cheng suffer, I don’t know that we wouldn’t have seen a Xiao Xingchen moment here. That Wei Wuxian wouldn’t have taken whatever sword, whatever weapon lying around and ended things right then and there.

Like I know Wei Wuxian loses his mind when Jiang Yanli dies. In the novel, he survives three more months protecting the last of the Wens. In the drama, he very significantly throws himself off a cliff. The thing is though is that I think Wei Wuxian would have been able to live without Jiang Yanli, and he certainly does learn to do so even if it’s a decade and a half later. But I genuinely don’t think that he would be able to live without knowing Jiang Cheng is alive, happy, somewhere, whether or not they speak to one another again. Even if Wei Wuxian is returned, even if he’s in his post-resurrection zen with Lan Wangji, with A-Yuan, with Wen Ning – if Jiang Cheng was still dead, Wei Wuxian would do everything spiritually and demonically possible to bring him back including taking Jiang Cheng’s place instead. He would absolutely not rest until he brought Jiang Cheng back.

Is it love? Is it guilt? Their dynamic is so intertwined with the tragedy of their circumstances, with the abuse and trauma and self-worth issues they have both carried through their whole lives that it’s hard to say whether it’s one or the other. I think it’s both. I think for all that Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli were the moors to which Jiang Cheng’s boat had been tied to for the entirety of his childhood, Wei Wuxian’s boat was tied right back to Jiang Cheng, that they helped each other stay afloat and losing that destroyed them long before Nightless City.

Vison:

Trying to organize this the best I can lol, but it’s kinda difficult when I don’t understand the tumblr ask controls, so sorry about that- Anyway, my MBTI type is INFP, although I’ll admit that I lost interest in and stopped researching the types after I figured out which one I was, so I’m not entirely sure what that means (at least assuming I’m remembering the result right, my memory isn’t the best so it’s entirely possible I’m wrong but I don’t feel like taking the test again lol-). I’m not the best at describing myself, but I’ve been told that I’m nice, smart, and funny. I’ve also been told I’m optimistic, but I personally thought I was pessimistic but eh who knows at this point. I’ve also been told I’m introverted I guess?? I’m really terrible at describing myself beyond what people tell me I’m sorry ahhh- I really want to do something to help people, if that counts as an ambition, but there’s really only so much I can do myself. I’m trying to work to become something in the entertainment industry, both because I like doing that and making people laugh, and because it’s easier to start charity fundraisers if you have some sort of following, which most often stems from those fields of work. I mainly want to help people who the world has sort of like betrayed if that makes sense, like homeless people who can’t get a job to stop being homeless BECAUSE they’re homeless, kids who are mistreated for literally just existing, those kinds of things. Worst case scenario I’ll just like start a revolution or something lol. (Only half joking- I WILL do that if I feel I have to. Watch out government I’m comin for ya lmao-) For challenges I usually try to fix the problem without people really knowing I fixed the problem, or the way that’s easiest. If I can’t do either of those for whatever reason I won’t do it normally, I’m going to do it in the most unreasonably over the top way because I think it’s funny. I don’t really handle gifts the best, unfortunately. My first thought if it’s not for like a specific event is “what do they want is this a trap-” but if it’s for something I skip that step and go right into “why did you spend money/time on me I’m so sorry-”. I don’t really feel happiness 90% of the time for whatever reason even though I am grateful, but it doesn’t seem like I am because I’m just sitting there like “I should be hyped right why do I feel nothing that’s weird am I broken???” Yeah idk either.

Character:

What kind of matchup it is I will leave entirely up to you, I honestly don’t mind either way. If you choose platonic, gender doesn’t matter to me, but if it’s romantic I’m asexual but I prefer guys. If you really want to write romantic and a girl though I don’t really care, be free lol. I don’t really go out of my way to interact with people. I only initiate interaction with someone I’m not already friends with if I need to talk to them to make my life easier, like if we’re assigned to work on the same thing together or they’re my best bet on getting the information I need. The issue is then they have to be like really persistent because i have ✨~Trust Issues~✨™️ so I’m immediately suspicious that they’re trying to mock me in some way, or are planning something against me, which I mean I guess can be the same thing but whatever. Once I’m relatively comfortable though I’m really loud and hate being serious. That can also cause some issues because my sense of humor is usually almost complet nonsense to anyone who isn’t me (or who shares my sense of humor) or relatively dark. Because of that, I really value people who can just roll with my jokes, because that’s honestly one of my favorite things to do and not many people can do that. I also usually like people who are confident since like thats the only way we’re probably going to interact at the start and also they can ask people for things for me lol. I can’t stand people who can’t understand what I’m trying to tell them when I’ve already tried to make it as simple as possible, doubt my knowledge on something I just told them I know about, or have absolutely no respect for anyone that isn’t them. I also don’t like people touching me (others don’t really like it either as my instinct reaction is usually to hit them before I realize what’s going on-), but I can tolerate it if it’s within my strangely specific boundaries, I know it’s coming, and I actually know and like the person. Then and only then, will my response not be to strike them down lol- I also have the bad habits of often accidentally rambling (like I’m doing right now in all of these replies wow so meta-), interrupting people when I have a thought (I try to say it before I forget, realize other people are still talking and try to shut up but I physically can’t until I finish the sentence), or lying to get out of situations I don’t think will end well for me (be it mildly embarrassing or we all die lol). So yeah that’s not great but it happens I guess.

Team:

Usually in groups I always somehow end up being the leader even though I really don’t want to and nobody really verbally agrees on it, it just happens. I always respond to what weapon I would use with now since I always play as bow users in games that have characters that use bows, but I think I would actually use a sword or a claymore were I to be put in that situation. Catalysts aren’t real so I’m not including them in my process of elimination, I’m extremely nearsighted so I doubt I’d be able to aim the bow well, I don’t understand polearms no matter how hard I try just like how do you hold it what-, so my best bet is probably a claymore or sword. Not sure which one though, but if I had to pick I’m not physically the fastest so the claymore makes more sense taking that into account. Yeah I don’t work in groups often idk what else to say for this specifically that I haven’t said in the others uhhhhhhhh-

oh, it's actually hard to answer bc pretty often my otps can work as brotps for me as well. it also means that when i can't ship some characters they don't work for me as friends either. not to mention that in asoiaf i'm open to many ships, and if i'm not very passionate about some it's not a sign i can't see them in romantic light.

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

may i say any sansa ship? 😭 as well as sansa herself lmao. idk generally i can't ship characters i don't like because i'm just not interested. and it's not to say i don't like book!sansa (show!sansa is another case 💀), i just don't find her arc as intriguing and epic as arcs of some other characters. however, it's absolutely her obnoxious fandom's fault that i don't want to touch anything about her now, pairings including. sansaery? pass. sansan? i used to have a soft spot for them in my heart but now? nah. sansa x anyone? pls have mercy, she's already a fandom bicycle.

and jonsa ofc. i would never mind some crack ship as i do this one if not for their obnoxious stans that did way too much to list there right now. but this burning desire to persuade every rock on the street that your crack ship is canon will never stop being ridiculous lmao

also braime. tbh i used to low-key like them but some of their stans weirded my away lol. i get that not all of them are like that but still. it's generally my great pain when i see braime/brienne/jaime stans who are also dany/targ antis. every time i see them i cackle and run away as fast as i can crying from disappointment lmao. it's really a pity because i'm either very neutral or like in my own way all three of them.

jonrya it is! i never hated them, you know, but they never were more than siblings and brotp to me. however, later i encountered the deluded crack ship fandom that shall not be named and understood that if there is any possible romance for jon with any of his sisters-cousins we all know which one it will be lmao. also their stans are very sweet and i really like many of their takes on arya and jon! i generally love relationships of jon and arya very much so it wasn't that difficult in practice to see them in a quite different light.

7. Is there anything you used to like but can't stand now?

meta culture lmao. reading different analysis and interpretations of the text used to be very interesting to me (and still is tbh but in other fandoms) though asoiaf is a different case. imo many people aren't honest in their so called theories and analyses. i get that all of us are biased but some "meta writers'" denial of their own biases influence fandom in a bad way. it looks like too many people run to them to get answers to their questions about any minor detail as if they were grrm himself. yk instead of using their own reading comprehension lmao. you see how this meta culture ruined fandom just looking at the most delusional stans and shippers who spread their agenda by writing endless text posts full of nonsense and bullshit but styled as oh so intellectual and thoughtful analysis. it's insane how many people actually buy it and don't check canon accuracy of such claims themselves. it got to the ridiculous point when random people try to argue with you with some far-fetched embarrassing "theories" as if they were canon facts or quotes straight up from a fanfic because they read somewhere some other confused soul's post and got from a context that this quote is canon (despite the fact that it wasn't written in grrm's style at all but some people can't use their brains even if their lives depended on it it seems).

anyway it's become too long and rambly already so tldr. because of such "neutral unbiased" analyses i got the habit of fact checking almost everything i see in such posts. there's only a small amount of meta writers from targ/dany/jon/arya stans that i trust because i know by practice and following them for some time that they don't pull anything out of nowhere, back up everything they say with canon quotes, don't decontextualize anything and (that is the most important thing to me) are reasonable and open to discussion unlike so many bnfs nowadays.

ah, not in this fandom yet, god bless! i think i'm not loud enough for the needed amount of time to deserve it lol. but since i'm not going anywhere soon maybe one day i will 😂

robert baratheon and tywin lannister, obviously. tbh it's pretty hard for me to hate any characters because you know. they're fictional lmao. just lines on paper, they can't hurt you. and even such dudes as tywin or robert don't get real distaste from me if they're written well enough. my problem with them lies not only in their canon crimes and shitty consequences of those but in fandom's (or at least some parts of it) unwillingness to acknowledge that they're canonically written as shitty, not as stan/pity/worship material. tywin isn't as clever as some think and robert is a coward outside of battlefield, not to mention some absolutely disgusting denial of his nature from targ antis only because the man happened to be the most vocal targ hater in-universe so these folks feel like he is their main book representative and whitewash him completely lmao

uugh idk even. i'm either low-key interested (or used to be at least so i can stay pretty neutral for the sake of nostalgia lol) or too indifferent to really care.

11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn't? Why?

all my faves have their own crowd of haters i'm afraid 😭 but let me say rhaegar. even among some dany/targ stans my man is so misunderstood lmao. it's not even his fault i dare say it's fanon about his half-imagined crimes that somehow got widespread to the unbelievable degree. and when i say they're half-imagined i'm being very generous actually. ofc he isn't perfect, no one in asoiaf is. and yes, he's a pre-series dead minor character but almost all little information about him is actually positive, not to mention the narrative itself that doesn't paint him as a villain or just a shitty dude. on the contrary, he's an idealized to some degree dead prince who could've been a good king (like some other historical targaryens, jacaerys, baelor breakspear, aemon son of jaehaerys, etc.), a mysterious yet tragic figure. i have much to say about why it's so popular to shit on him in fandom but yeah. his haters should send their complaints to grrm instead, no one forced the man to write him like that lol. and i mean that no one has to like him ofc. but it's misinterpretation of the text to claim he was intentionally written as a villain or smth by grrm.

12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn't? Why?

i don't know if it counts as unpopular but i would say tyrion's arc as a whole because i enjoy his character and like in my own way. i can get why some people don't like him but this man will always have his own place in my heart i must admit.

13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character?

is this unpopular tho?.. ok but renly wouldn't make a terrible king. i dare say he would be better than both robert and stannis. yes, he wasn't shown as perfect and i don't claim this. he wouldn't be the best or the most brilliant or the most just or noble. yet still better than his brothers. his flaws weren't anything other high lords didn't have, his mistakes weren't anything other lords and kings didn't do. in many ways he would make a better job than robert or stannis, too bad he died so early, even though i get why it was important for the narrative.

26. Most shippable character?

well generally for me it's the ones i love the most lol. jonerys/snowstorm is my never dying otp but i admit my sins, sometimes i just see dany with other characters (often from other fandoms pls don't @ me). however, since dany is THE fave of mine it means i would rather twist the other guy or girl to fit into the good match for her than twist her for another character in my new born crack ship lol. and i never stay for too long with the ships with which i feel they don't really fit and don't do justice for each other lol. maybe that's the reason i'm not much of a rare shipper / crack shipper afshdjdb

You always say sorry for rambling, but I ramble a lot and I like reading your thoughts anyway, I feel like I can have a conversation xD oh, thought rambling has the connotation of talking nonsense... Anyway, I don't mind. Hmm, a reason why I don't think that Hawks = Icarus parallel makes sense is because it would probably require another point of view to be done properly, and Hawks is still a side character. Heck, even if he stops being a side character, the story has been a consistent hero students/heroes and villains (mostly LOV) pov, and I've seen people talking about him falling into being a vigilante which I think would cost too much time, others' perspective and would deviate a little from the story? It could happen, obviously, but Horikoshi isn't that unpredictable... The Dabi reveal was obvious, BJ being alive was rational, and Mirio was foreshadowed... or maybe these things make a lot of sense to me and, therefore, expected lmao. If it's as a villain it would make sense, but he's too nice. Ah, I do see Hawks as an Icarus-lite as someone said before XD but for now, I think he would be linked mainly to the Todoroki's, Tokoyami, and if we're lucky, pro heroes are included. Maybe this next arc only focus on recovery while everything is on chaos...

I'm tired of characters with wings = Icarus 😂 like... what if there isn't a parallel-- but with Horikoshi using Greek mythology, I get it. There's also this popular meta of Hawks being Icarus. I think Dabihawks fics with Icarus comparison also exploded at the same time :p I'll investigate more about those things, read the full story if it's possible ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I agree with how little I've seen about Phoenix, but you can never be too sure.

First things first, I’m with you on “wings =Icarus” comparisons because they’re just so tired and cliche. I can understand that it’s the obvious conclusion but at this point, I wish for more or for their to be a twist in these comparisons (which is why I love the Dabi = Icarus comparison much better because between him and Hawks, he’s the unexpected choice for Icarus and yet it works so well!).

I haven’t read that meta personally (I’ve found the creator has been heavily biased in their interpretations of the characters in past meta and do not personally enjoy their interpretations) but I’ll give it a read in the future just to hear what they say. I know they made the comparison between Icarus and freedom and I’ve expressed in posts in the past why I don’t particularly agree that it fits Hawks (best not to get too repetitive here XD). I think it’s more of a case with me having to agree to disagree.

I also agree with you that I don’t think Hawks will become a vigilante. If he had been swayed by the villains somewhat then I could see that route being a bigger possibility for him but since Dabi has revealed his past to the public, I think Hori’s going to keep him on as a hero and have him face the hardships of the publics judgement. I think it would make much more sense in the story to have Hawks overcome these hardships and come out an even greater hero at the end then have him fall into misery and/or defect (and become a criminal). BNHA has always been about perseverance and I think it would have much better impact to have Hawks achieve his childhood hopes and dreams rather then allowing him to become a martyr for circumstances out of his control.

Maybe I’m being too optimistic here but BNHA isn’t a doom and gloom manga so I don’t really believe in the more pesimistic futures many in the fandom hold for Hawks.
