Warning ahead of time for talking about aquatic animal death (non-mammal), trying not to talk about food preparation (I think I did good not mentioning specific things), and non-aquatic animal death.

I like watching food videos, which is great and all until it's seafood. It's either going to be palatable to watch or activate discomfort and rage.

The only way I can watch them is if the meat is already prepared, as they should be. Except shellfish (I feel so dumb asking, but that's shrimp as well, yeah? I think yeah).

But, like, there are! So many! Videos! Preparing the seafood Too Much! One was even taking a fish straight from a river and preparing it for eating! You get what I mean? I don't want to say too much.

And because of your efforts in spreading the truth of fish (and other aquatic non-mammals) having feelings and personalities and such, I start thinking... Would there be casual videos of food preparation like this for chickens? Cows? No, no there wouldn't. Because we respect them to some kind of degree, their full preparation would be greatly distressing to watch, wouldn't it? Why is it okay with seafood? You get me?

Not to worry anon, I will tag this appropriately with animal death trigger warning tags. Though I will also have to warn anyone still reading, I will also talk about the killing of animals. A bit of an essay about fish mistreatment and the possible reasons why incoming ^^''

I feel you! I have noticed this worrying trend in society myself, so have many other much wiser fish enthusiasts and activists before me. Publicly showing the preparing of fish from the live animal to the finished dish is... creepily normalised. Especially when this would never be done to mammals! Like that pufferfish meme that was popular some years back, the one where the pufferfish eats a carrot and then moans? That clip is a part of a fuller video where said pufferfish is prepared, fully on screen, into a dish. Even the actual meme, the pufferfish biting into the carrot and moaning is saddening and disturbing to me; the pufferfish is gasping for oxygen and the chef sticks a carrot in its mouth just to show how sharp its beak is, prolonging its fear and suffering.

Something that I think explains this phenomenon, and what I've heard activists talk about, is that what most dictates how we view an animal is how we first come into contact with said animal. We tend to see animals like mammals, birds, beautiful pollinators in everyday life in contexts that tend to value them just for existing as they are, like dogs and cats being pets, songbirds singing and butterflies and bees flying from flower to flower looking pretty. (As a big arthropod fan I acknowledge that invertebrates are often overlooked and underestimated as well! And I also acknowledge that not all mammals and birds are loved equally as they should. But that's a whole other story.)

But fish? Besides aquariums, I don't think people have very many experiences with fish just existing. Many people's first real memory of seeing and interacting with fish might just be going fishing with a relative or a friend. Your first meaningful encounter with a fish and it's said fish being caught with a hook in the lip, out of the water, possibly suffocating or promptly killed to be prepared into a dish? That kind of interaction immediately normalises that fish are more of a service than a group of animals that can be appreciated just as they are. It also normalises catching and preparing of fish unlike any other animal! I'm not saying fishing is inherently horrible, but see how most people don't ever get to see a cow or a chicken being slaughtered? Yet a good chunk of people must have gone fishing at some point or another. This immediately and subconsciously tells us that it's fine to see fish being killed in front of us, because it's normal.

I think what also helps us disregard the emotions and experiences of fish when we see them be killed in front of our eyes is the fact that, as humans, we can have a hard time relating to animals that don't look or emote like we do. Of course fish feel emotions, they feel joy, sadness, anger, love, and they definitely feel terrified to be out of the water and in the hands of a predator! But they don't emote it through facial expressions, they can't scream or wail, they can't wave their limbs like a terrestrial animal in distress would, they can only squirm. The emotions they feel are real, we just don't read them as strongly as we do on other animals. (And even then humans are mighty good at anthropomorphising animals when they shouldn't. Did you know that to other primates smiling is often a threat display, but some humans have gotten hurt by primates for assuming that it's a happy smile and smiling back?) So, once again we can ignore the feelings of fish much easier when they aren't screaming in fear, or crying, or clawing to get out — out of sight, out of mind. This is most likely why some folk think of fish as living decorations, also. It's easy to overlook their personalities when you don't see them displaying their emotions loud and clear.

These two reasons are why I think it's extraordinarily important to teach people about the lives of fish! Sure, fishing will always be a thing and our tendency to look for humanlike expressions is in our DNA. But how easy will it be to disregard fish once you know that cichlids form complex social circles where everyone knows who's who and their exact relationships? How manta rays and cleaner wrasse recognise their own self in a mirror and even in pictures? How catfish talk to each other with drumming sounds? How bettas have unique personalities and enjoy playing? How some sharks like to be pet? I don't think it'll come just as naturally as before. Even one visit to an aquarium or a near body of water can be a lifechanging experience. :)

Thank you anon for presenting such an interesting ask, look how it got me talking! This is all food for thought, for me and to anyone who has gotten this far. I don't think I can ever express how much I love fish. I love their little personalities so much and they all deserve to live their lives to the fullest. I hope that perhaps some people who didn't see it before will be able to see what I see, because life is so much more fun and meaningful when you appreciate all the living things around you! Not just the meowing and barking ones.

It's disorientating, to suffer the obscenity of a large seizure; it is made worse thrice over, however, upon coming around and not recalling anything. Naught about ones self, not about ones life or preference, naught about the people one knows or the job they work.

There are people now, in his company as he sits upon a seat in a rather dark hallway, that have been attempting to get him to recall something by telling him tales of how they knew one another, or what he had done for them through his job. But it all felt surreal, it all felt as if he was being fed stories and naught that was true - for none of it sparked recognition in the slightest. The longer it went on, the more panicked Vaux became, fearing that he would never remember.

Eyes tightly closed, a moment taken to simply breathe and attempt to settle himself down. The last thing he needed was to trigger another seizure through immense stress - and when he reopens his eyes does he find another figure in his company, but this one - dressed in stark white - sits aside him.

Blonde hair, blue eyes, fine features - no matter how many times his own silver eyes scanned his newfound companys face, he simply didn't know who he was. Cute though-

He tries his best to smile, to remain polite just in case, but the last thing he wanted was to have more unknowns thrown at him for the lithe possibility it would trigger any kind of recognition. Frankly, it was giving him a headache by this point - - but he would struggle through just one more, it would seem.

"Fishing nets-?" He repeats, appearing thrice more confused than he had been with any of the other suggestions he had been offered. Was he a fisherman? Eyes glanced down at hands and aside from what appeared to be the odd papercut and extremely well manicured nails, there were no signs of heavy manual labor. So perhaps not?

"I'm sorry, I just don't... Remember." He glances towards company once more, unable to help himself gazing at what he was wearing, finding a mental link between the words uttered and how his clothing appeared. The ends of his coat really did look rather like a fishing net, didn't they?

Upon that thought, his headache grew worse and he was all but forced to squeeze his eyes closed and cradle his head in his hands, whining towards the pain. With the discomfort came mild recognition, the first spark of it since he had regained consciousness and thought the shock of pain was detestable, he was thankful that something was found as familiar.

When it subsided after only a moment longer, Vaux took another look at his company, this time staring longer, willing his mind to remember.

"I know that I know you---" He begins, re-closing his eyes to aid in the aching of his head: "-- but I cannot place your name... Or where we are: only the feeling of familiarity and that I don't like the bottom half of your coat, passionately."

He ought be happy he had that - but Vaux couldn't shake the feeling of being displaced because of not remembering so much about himself, his routines. It was frightening, in all honesty, and he knew not quite what to do.

Perhaps relaxing was the answer, not trying to rush things out of fear and desperation would allow his mind to remember naturally but it was easier said than done.

"May I stay here a while?" Fingers pick at nails in idle anxiety, eyes now turned towards the ground: "... I'd leave but... I know not where to go." He couldn't remember where he lived, where he worked, if he had any family around that would look after him: " - - - unless you know of any family that I could be dropped off with? I wouldn't wish to be in the way here. " Wherever here was.

Extreme formatting to the point I have difficulty reading it, despite my eyesight is great.

Haven't really happened, but expecting Rozy (or any of my muses) to be immediately down to have sex with yours. She might feel attraction at first sight, especially if the first meeting is a swordfight, but she's a trauma ridden gray asexual. It will take some time.

We all know and put in the no racists etc list in our rules but I haven't seen many 'don't interact if you're anti sex work'. So if I see anyone speaking poorly of sex work in general, sex workers of any kind from full time workers to selling feet pics on Onlyfans; saying they deserve whatever treatment because of their line of work, daddy issues/uneducated/unintelligent jokes, use of slurs: get the fuck out of my sight and be very glad I'm not your neighbor. My blogs are all safe spaces for every kind of sex workers.

Portraying pedophilia/rape/sexual abuse in a positive light. It's not the same as having those in your character's backstory, nor if your character has a warped mindset on it due to what they been through. I am able to tell when the mun themselves write it as a kink instead a character's trauma response.

Being soooooo 'anti callout' that they refuse to heed the 20+ page google docs of evidence and still interact with known abusers in the rpc. And I'm not talking about 'they called my friend stupid and have a similar theme as them' petty shit. I'm talking about grooming, pedophilia, slandering, manipulating, doxxing, harassing, stalking. I don't care how this will sound: I know I'm a good writer. So let me just start with saying that I’m not going to police people for what they write because if i did, i’d be miserable and i’d have no energy to focus on my own writing. If i see someone writing content that makes ME uncomfortable or upset, i leave or block, it’s not that hard. just tag your posts or let people know in your rules that you don’t tag triggers and you’ll be fine. 

Okay, now with that out of the way, i think when it comes to this conversation, the worst takes on this always come from individuals who fail to like…moderate their beliefs ( for example, yes this is all for fun so you should respond to things when you feel the most inspired, but if it’s to the point that you start threads and post memes that you NEVER reply to…well makes sense if people end up dropping you ngl :/ ) like yeah writing just happy and nonharmful things would be rather dull, but also when writing something that contains sensitive content, we need to be respectful because there are people in rl that are affected by this. Fiction may not be real, but reality informs the writer and therefore the fiction written which when consumed will affect reality in turn. That being said, i assume that people who write the say, more controversial topics know that it’s fiction and it should not be practiced in real life….that’s one of the things i feel like people forget? We’re not mindless sheep who agree with and take everything we watch as actual reality.

That being said, for me whether line differs between roleplay and forms of media like say, books and tv shows really comes down to intent. what is a reason for a controversial scene to be written- is there a point to be made, an intention behind it? if written with care and thought, books and tv shows can do it, but with roleplay unfortunately a lot of times what is written is usually purely for enjoyment? Not that a story or an intention can’t be attached to a roleplay, but since roleplayer they usually write for themselves, i assume that both parties enjoy what they’re exploring and writing….so when i see someone writing say, noIn-con for example, i can’t help but give the side eye: the difference between seeing this kind of scene in prose and in a roleplay is that if it is done well in prose, there is usually an intention behind it and the characters are developed beyond that event; the same can’t always be said in a roleplay. 

I will say though, regardless of the medium, it is perfectly possible to explore dark content in a respectful manner. When you write these topics, you can portray it without coming off as voyeuristic or trauma porn. For example, with say something like s*exu*al a*ss*ault, going into explicit detail is not necessary to explore the repercussions of such an event. ( of course media in general does not do a good job of this but that’s besides the point :/ )  But whereas in prose, a writer can gloss over the event, the problem in an rp thread is that you’re supposed to immerse yourself in your character’s head/environment…and some roleplayers do so for this kind of content in the name ‘character exploration’....which full offense, i don’t buy that.  

The other hard line i also will always draw is always with historical muses, specifically wwii muses or muses that commit crimes again humanity. Rp is a practice in empathy and so to see someone humanize individuals that have committed major war crimes and human atrocities makes me kinda pissed bc it might just be history to the writer, but for a lot of people, that history still affects them and their families to this day.

RP PET PEEVES/DEALBREAKERS: Hoy boy alright buckle in. For one, I can’t only do oneliners. For crack or the like it’s fine but if that’s the only way someone rps I can’t.

Also can’t with people who have sporadic activity but each time they relaunch their blog(s) they start over and start a buncha new stuff yelling that they want attention and to do so many things only to poof and when they come back to rp they do the same thing all over again and you never/barely actually get to RP with them. On a related note because these things tend to go together--when someone is constantly remaking their blogs.

I also will politely bow out on people who’s main desire for rp is sexual and/or romantic ships. You do you, but that’s not for me I’m here to tell a story first and if that happens to include a ship cool but there are more stories than just people falling for each other and going on dates. Also on this topic people who overly post sexual things several times a day. It’s okay to have a sexual muse but idk man I really don’t need to be seeing all the lingerie they like and posts on their favorite ways to have sex and their kinks 5 times a day. This aint p*rn hub. Likewise if someone spams with romance posts their ship(s) and never shuts up about them and just constantly harps on how in love they are and nothing else

Big dealbreaker is when I try and set boundaries for my own comfort and someone goes off on me and tries to gaslight me into thinking that I’m overreacting or I have no reason to want to avoid a certain kind of content. Like, nearly everyone’s rules say they’re chill with tagging triggers for people or avoid topics in conversations if asked and etc and yet when you try and do that some people bite your head off. 

Another one is when rpers can’t be assed to do good research to 1) make sure they aren’t writing anything harmful or 2) just be?? generally respectful to the culture whatever your piece of media you’re rping in comes from? I don’t expect people to know everything about Japan, but idk maybe do stuff like google if Christmas is celebrated over there and if so how and also maybe a general idea of what their idea of death and the afterlife is like when the series takes place in Japan?? Just. Google at a minimum jfc.

Hello and welcome.

First off, I want to thank you for taking the time to read this.

Second, let me introduce myself.

My name is Tara. She/Her. I am a writer and I have been roleplaying online for 20+ years. It is a hobby I do for fun. I am an over 30 millennial and we have to have something to do for fun, right?  I have been on tumblr for over 10 years on and off. You may have seen me around with my leprechaun seanrenton and I have a multi-muse persephonedigs as well as a few others. (This blog is a sideblog of that)

I’m not in college with tons of free time anymore–I work full time and I have a family. I am old enough to be done with any rpc drama – if I am not comfortable being myself around you, we don’t have to interact. Same goes for you if you feel that way with me. No hard feelings, and I wish everyone well. I would love to be friends if you are interested though! I am pagan, an animal lover, witchy and gothy, into many fandoms, I love music, and I love to read. I also have a corgi – let me know if you want to see her ever, I always have pics!

I also am a spoonie – I have chronic health issues. I have mental health issues. Sometimes I am too nice for my own good and sometimes I take everything too personally. Neuro-divergents will understand, sometimes silence or a hiatus will happen. If anything is ignored, it is NOT personal.

When it comes to roleplaying, like I said, for me, I do it for fun. I do it to try to spark writing for other projects. I do it for laughs and for that thrill you get when you have a good thread going with someone. I do it for shippy fluff.

I am the kind of person who, if I like you, I would feel able to pop up in your DMs with a HEEYYY and a meme. I do not take myself too seriously here – real life has enough time for that. If you don’t want that, that is fine.

I am married, and I also roleplay with my husband at times, (not here) so smut is something that we would have to discuss and is not very likely to just happen. I am very bad about tagging posts. I try to remember to do a cw if something is very explicit in here. If you need something tagged just send me a gentle reminder.

If you know someone is racist, homo - or transphobic, fascist, q oriented, or just doesn’t think Nazi’s are bad, please let me know. I don’t talk to most of my own racist family, I don’t want to associate with anyone like that on here.

I will gladly do ask RP especially if you are mobile only. I don’t care about that. No worries about typos either. If you need to fix it, go ahead. Fix mine too if you want.

And see, because there's such an age gap between Maddie and Buck, Eddie doesn't know she's his best friend's sister, and Maddie thinks to herself "surely there is another Eddie Diaz" and so neither of them make the connection.

Eddie, obviously, becomes Captain America

And ends up in the USO

Which he hates because he's an introvert, but he's also really good at it, he'd just rather be doing something worthwhile. Anyway, he's doing a show in Italy and discovers that he's performing for the 118 and hey wait that's Buck's unit, hey wait they all got captured.

And so he goes to the colonel and to Maddie and is like "My best friend's unit got captured" and Maddie's like "hey! it was my brother's unit too!" and they finally figure it out in a very spider-men meme, but anyway, Eddie goes and breaks out the 118, including one Howard "Howie" Han (this is 80% of the reason this was in my head) and together they become the Howling Commandos.

Buck is reluctant to join on account of being pissy about Eddie being in danger (again) and also he's pretty sure Eddie and Maddie are flirting and for whatever reason that makes him kinda want to die on the inside

at some point he tries to be like haha you're flirting with my sister man and Eddie just like points him at the corner where Howie and Maddie are gazing deeply into each other's eyes and Buck's in a better mood after that

Anyway, then there's the train.

And then Eddie goes into the ice.

and wakes up much earlier than 2011 but he's handed into SHIELD supervisory custody with Agent Shannon [Surname redacted] and wouldn't you know it, they strike up a relationship which is against the rules, and wouldn't you know it but turns out the folk legend in the background of SHIELD about Project Rebirth, ah, separating the captain from his men if you will, not true.

And well, eventually, things implode and fall apart and then aliens invade and it's just like, it's a whole thing.

After the aliens, after Norse gods, after after after, Eddie ends up working for SHIELD in DC in his capacity as Captain America, and on a morning stress run, he runs into a ghost.

Not a real one, of course although considering the state of the world, that's probably a solid possibility. But the other guy running stress laps around the Mall at dawn looks exactly like that other Howlie, Howie Han.

"Nah, Howie was my grandfather. I'm Chimney," Chim tells him, and a friendship is struck.

Rounding out their trio for the sake of this AU is Lena, but see there's this problem.

Another ghost, another relic from the colder days, known only as the Winter Soldier.

they wanted machines right someone who could turn a switch and not be human anymore and that's not him it's not but how can he remember when they go out of their way to just overwrite all his memories all the time and the screaming that echoes in his head all the time is his own but

And the Winter Soldier is tearing through them, just rendering all of SHIELD basically useless, ostensibly took out Director A. Grant and everything.

But when they come up against him, the Winter Soldier's muzzle gets knocked off and really it's amazing what counts as a memory trigger, but Eddie saying his name works pretty damn well

the flashback, of course, isn't "I'm with you 'til the end of the line" it's "You can have my back any day" and the line when Eddie's almost dying trying to get through the Winter Soldier programming is "I said I've got your back, Evan" and well

When Buck drags him out of the Potomac (or was it the Anacostia? doesn't matter) Eddie is conscious enough to keep him from running, and instead they flee the dregs of SHIELD together, and hole up in the safehouse where Christopher lives, and it's that ultimate show of trust, placing him in the same house where he keeps his son, that breaks through the last of Buck's programming, and the fact that they've been just stupid in love with each other since like 1936 is allowed to surface, and they get to step aside from this awful life they've lived, together, on their own terms.
