The Maddie Diaries Book Review
★☆☆☆☆ ~ 1 out of 5 stars
Like most people who read (or listen to, in this case) books sometimes, I listened to Jennette McCurdy’s I’m Glad My Mom Died last year (though not recently enough to give it a proper review - sorry!). That was my first audiobook memoir, and it set the bar very high for audiobook memoirs.
By contrast, I just scraped the bottom of the audiobook-memoir barrel with my first one of 2023 - Maddie Ziegler’s The Maddie Diaries. If you’re wondering who that is, I envy your lack of familiarity with the reality TV show Dance Moms, on which Ziegler and her younger sister, Mackenzie, starred as child dancers for several years in the late 00s and early 10s. Like all reality TV, Dance Moms contained drama and strife to a cartoonish degree. Something about watching moms and a dance teacher fight about which little girl is the very best dancer really tapped into the American psyche during the time period in which it was on, though. This show was popular, and it launched Maddie, her sister, and her costars to varying degrees of fame. Due to her role on Dance Moms, Ziegler was picked up as a dancer for the popstar Sia and was a judge for So You Think You Can Dance back in 2016.
The Maddie Diaries was published in 2017, when Ziegler was fourteen. This is generally a little young to write a memoir, but Ziegler is famous and has had an unusual life, so I thought that perhaps her age was not the biggest red flag. Retrospectively, that was a bit naïve of me.
First and foremost, The Maddie Diaries is not a memoir. It is half teen self-help book and half an opportunity to brag, with a dash of kissing up to Sia, that is masquerading as a memoir. Every chapter contains an “Ask Maddie” section where generic questions about common teen issues are given to Ziegler, and she gives the blandest and least controversial advice possible for each one. When she is not instructing teens on how to be little angels, she is usually just listing her accomplishments and talking about her interests. While those things should be incorporated into a good memoir, there is no underlying reason why she is talking about these things; they don’t provide conflict or tension.
In fact, this is one of the most conflict-avoidant books I’ve ever read. This is seen most acutely when Ziegler raises the question of whether the drama on Dance Moms is real, no doubt because she knows her readers are curious. She gives a nonresponse about how competition life is stressful, and then she goes back to only focusing on the positive aspects of all the experiences that she has had. Focusing on the positive is a respectable choice, but never saying anything that could be construed as negative makes for a boring book.
I don’t think these issues with The Maddie Diaries are Ziegler’s fault. I don’t know how much of this book she wrote herself, but it seems apparent to me that there was a heavy amount of outside input on what she should and shouldn’t say and a great concern about the possibility of stepping on people’s toes. I think this is the reason why they moved in more of a teen self-help book direction. And I think the reason that they didn’t completely commit to that direction is that Ziegler or someone else involved in the book’s creation wanted to create space to gush about her personal experiences. But those are just my speculations.
Returning to what is in the book, the biggest throughline in The Maddie Diaries, the one thing she keeps coming back to over and over again, is Sia. Sia wrote the foreword to this “memoir,” wherein she praised Ziegler for being a brilliant and talented young woman and notes that she hopes to be a mentor to Ziegler and help her avoid the predation that happens so often in Hollywood. Ziegler returns these praises tenfold within the text, talking about how Sia is like her best friend and her second mom all rolled into one, wishing that the two of them could live together, attending a wedding with Sia, noting how people sometimes call her Sia’s muse, talking about being on tour and in the studio with Sia constantly. When I listened to all this, I texted a friend and said that I cannot tell if Ziegler is being a kiss-ass here, or if she has a crush, or both. Additionally, I have to wonder if Sia’s intentions in seeking out a famous child dancer and getting her involved in all of her projects, from music videos to tours to movies, is as altruistically motivated as Sia claims.
All that said, I would give The Maddie Diaries 1 out of 5 stars. I don’t recommend reading it. I hope that one day Ziegler produces a memoir that is a little more genuine - I’m sure she would have lots of interesting stories to tell if she were not worried about pissing anyone off or sounding ungrateful.

Have I read this prompt somewhere or was this a fever dream from my bored mind.
What if, now hear me out.
What if we bring up Dana Winters-Drake (whose confirmed to at least be alive in the DC verse but no one knows where she actually is)
What if instead of when she had a mental breakdown and getting committed to an Bludhaven clinc she wandered away before anyone noticed and by the time Tim or anyone did notice a lot of stuff started happening at once in both Gotham and Bludhaven (Steph dying, The Bludhaven crisis, etc etc)
Tim still tries to find her though but even with best resources it was like she just disappeared into the wilderness and the stress of trying to handle more and more problems get worse.
So when out of the blue, a couple of years later, he gets a call from an unknown number. On his private, only for friends and family, phone and when he answers he meet with a young girls voice on the other end.
A very young, maybe six or seven, girl who informs him about his apparently half-brother Danny Drake-Fenton. And how she loves Danny so, so, so much but knows her home is dangerous for him to be in.
Tim is stunned and before he could question her, she says Danny is Dana and Jack's baby and that her parents had adopted him years ago and put Dana's stuff that the hospital had away for him to look at when he was older but she just had to fight off their lunch from eating her brother and she knows he needs a better place to live and so she snooped around and found Dana's diary and that she had to unscramble the nonsense Dana wrote and found Tim's number with the words 'tell him about his brother Danny' hidden in it. And-
But before she could keep rambling she hears Danny screaming "JAZZY THE MILK WENT BAD AGAIN AND HISSED AT ME!"
Tim is left with silence after hearing Jazz yell to Danny to lock the fridge and step out of the kitchen as she gets the bat.

idk. truly i’m not out here being like, “oh actually trying to sacrifice your baby to open a demon gateway is really cool and everyone should be doing it.” but this the x-men. characters, heroic characters too, are doing the most heinous things all of the time. so i sometimes find it silly that inside and outside the text, madelyne pryor is seen as this deeply vile creature. i said before i wonder if it’s because maddy is a mother causing harm to her child, and that’s just the "most disgraceful thing" someone could think of. i might be reading too much into that, but who knows. obviously trying to sacrifice babies to demons is not cool.
sympathetic readings of maddy, outside of how scott treats her, stem from her literally being created from stolen dna for the sole purpose to have a child (something jean “failed” to do before her death). like that is really sick and unnerving. and part of madelyne's plan to sacrifice her child is because he’s the physical embodiment of sinister manipulating everyone. it’s really tragic all around.
so you have this foundation of being sympathetic for a character manufactured to be married and to have a child, while no one besides sinister has any say at all. i'm totally interested in an arc where madelyne comes to terms with her love/feelings toward her child, but i just feel dark web doesn’t care about telling that story?? instead, i think the book is trying to tell readers, “actually maddy wants to know all about her son and she’s actually a good person because she wants to be a mom <3” like you, know what i mean? like is that all just counterproductive? maybe i just need to go to bed.

So wait, what’s the range on how long EQ has been in prison for wonderland. 1 year? 5? 7? In the show the characters that escape seem the same age as we currently see them, but I vaguely remember in the books being implied for longer than that.
If you don’t have an answer that’s ok, your seemingly episodic memory of the franchise amazes me anyhow.
I mostly just reread the books all the time because I have them illegally downloaded on my phone and I’m planning on taking an English major so I just have a good memory / analyze text like crazy. Also like the literacy of teenage girls who have unhealthy obsessions? Is surprisingly good.
Anyways this is always something that confuses me!!!
BECAUSE THEY NEVER SAY HOW MANY YEARS
LIKE MAYBE I NEED TO REREAD BUT MOSTLY THEY TALK A LOT ABT PRECURSE/MIRROR PRISON IN THR SHANNON HALE SERIES AND THE DIARIES AND A LOT ABOUT DURING IMPRISONMENT IN THE SHANNON HALE SERIES / TV SERIES BUT WE NEVER GET A TIMELIME!!!
Anyways the best I can canonically get you is that Lizzie mentions being 3 and the curse not being there and we know that the og 3 wonderlandians had been in ever after since at least freshman year
So basically that’s like an 11 year timespan
I mean we can assume it takes place a bit later bc bunny thought Alistair would ask her out before the curse which implies she was older, but then also her dad probably made Bunny with a human so if things like beastiality work different in wonderland maybe typical dating ranges r different too
Ok now I actually want to analyze it more , I’ll probably reread the first 3 books on my plane ride tmr
