as if the concept itself was enough to engender blasphemy

(as in the way you say my beloved,

knowing immediately the touch of a hand, a face, a name--)

but one night long ago, in bethlehem,

a young jewish girl smiled in starlight and whispered in reply,

"yeshua,"

my son, my child, my beloved,

my Joshua,

my Jesus,

my God.

(we don't speak the name--)

it's unthinkable, unthinkable.

how do you imagine it?

what does God look like?

but no, that's easy enough.

God looks like the dew on a rose, like sunrise on snow, like light in a prism. God looks like constellations and butterfly wings and all those other cherished cliches that pour out of our mouths when we are moved by the beauty of Creation, His Creation, touched by His hands in time beyond time.

that's easy enough. but that's not how god looks when he has a name.

that's not what is so terrible, so beyond thought that we shrink from it like feathers from flame.

what does god look like if he looks like you?

little yeshua curls his tiny fingers in the warm wool of a sheep.

mary presses her soft lips to his soft forehead.

what does god look like?

he looks like---

it's unthinkable, unthinkable.

but there he is, lying in a manger,

and the oxen are thinking about it more than you

and the angels weep with joy in the stellated heavens.

we don't speak the name of God.

oh, but why don't we?

is he not my beloved?

is he not my Jesus, too?

to name is to know.

could your heart be so bold?

Dear Sue,

God is love, which is why I have difficulty relating to the atheist position. Every one of us, even the most spiritually resistant, yearns for love, whether we realise it or not. And this yearning calls us forever toward its objective – that we must love each other. We must love each other. And mostly I think we do – or we live in very close proximity to the idea, because there is barely any distance between a feeling of neutrality toward the world and a crucial love for it, barely any distance at all. All that is required to move from indifference to love is to have our hearts broken. The heart breaks and the world explodes in front of us as a revelation.

There is no problem of evil. There is only a problem of good. Why does a world that is so often cruel, insist on being beautiful, of being good? Why does it take a devastation for the world to reveal its true spiritual nature? I don’t know the answer to this, but I do know there exists a kind of potentiality just beyond trauma. I suspect that trauma is the purifying fire through which we truly encounter the good in the world.

Each day I pray into the silence. I pray to all of them. All of them who are not here. Into this emptiness, I pour all my desire and want and need, and in time this absence becomes potent and alive and activated with a promise. This promise that sits inside the silence is beauty enough. This promise, right now, is amazement enough. This promise, right now, is God enough. This promise, right now, is as much as we can bear.

Misconception.

I think the world’s greatest misconception about Jesus is that because we are sinners, He doesn’t love or want anything to do with us. The truth is that He is for us and never against us; the truth is that He unconditionally loves us; the truth is that He adores us; the truth is that He is constantly running after us; the truth is that He desires to know us; the truth is that He wants to free, cleanse, and redeem us; the truth is that He freely and gladly offers salvation to us; the truth is that He will never leave nor forsake us.

He is the Father that many of us have never had; He is the friend that many of us have always wanted; He is the refuge that many of us seek; He is the love that many of us long for; He is the joy that many of us have never experienced; He is the life that many of us thought to never live; He is the way that many of us desire to be shown; and He is the missing puzzle piece that we have all have been looking for.
