Questions regarding Perrine and the rest! :~)
Despite Kingsley's cleverness, Perrine is still the smartest and the most experienced of the four. She is also quite strong, very ambitious, and shares King's competitiveness! Though it is also Kingsley who brings out the fun in her, that not all is serious.
As ive said; the Lark are four orphaned children who is now with a found family, as they live in a sanctuary together!
Perrine's old home and parents never really let her be a kid, she was an only child who grew up to have a lot of forced aspirations, and the Lark was such a huge change of company. She has difficulty expressing the simplest feelings and would often address vulnerable situations in a tactical perspective. It is through the Lark and her admiration for the Harkers that helps her befriend her own wonderment back! ๐๐ป
With that said, she prefers to be among animals rather than most people (other than the Lark) because its difficult for her to converse with folks her age and she despises adults (due to her previous parents). Perrine does progress and work through it though! ๐
She likes to come up with nicknames also!
"Clรฉmmie" "King" "Coleman/Colesson/Coleton/Coleby/Colette/Coletraine/etc."
Cole does get poked fun at the most. I had a doodle of Kingsley and Perrine ganging up on him during a pillow fight, i do need to look for it again...
All i have to say about Clรฉmentine for now is that they are just brimming endearments, but that is way too given, they absolutely love giving kisses! Because as much as the Baroness, their mother, was suffocating, they were still very loved and adored in that household. And i suppose that kind of overwhelming affection translated to how they are with their friends, especially Cole ๐พ

These are the women who have a sixth sense, some may be seers, mages, healers and/or bards. They carry messages for people to hear; knowledge, wisdom, memories, and cautions. Theyโre the women who change the story, by adding or sometimes taking.ย

This chapter is absolutely heartbreaking. Knowing that Fantineโs situation has gotten worse because she stops sending money as regularly? That sheโs still trying to because she thinks Cosette is doing well, even though sheโs suffering? Seeing the actual abuse Cosette endures? Itโs horrible.
Like we saw with Valjean upon his arrival in Digne, Cosetteโs dehumanization is highlighted by comparisons to domesticated animals. She is fedย โa little better than the dog, a little worse than the cat,โ but whereas Valjean resisted his subhuman treatment to an extent (he cried out upon seeing that a dog had a place to stay for the night while he didnโt), to Cosette, this is just how things are. We see that she eats with the cat and the dog, and from a bowl like theirs, without complaint. Sheโs obviously not happy, and she has the comparison to รponine and Azelma to show that this is not the only way for children to live, but can she understand why sheโs being treated this way? Does she know that she wasnโt abandoned, or does she think she deserves this somehow? Or is she so worn down that she doesnโt think about this at all? She is only five, and sheโs already been made to work.
Cosette isnโt even addressed as a person in letters to her mother. Sheโs consistently referred to as aย โcreatureโ in writing and in speech by the Thรฉnardiers, and over the course of the chapter, Hugo goes from sayingย โchildโ toย โcreatureโ (โshivering little creatureโ) as well. It gives the sense that she internalizes this to an extent? Or that this dehumanizing language is so commonplace that no one thinks anything of it anymore.
ย Another point that infuriates me is the attitude of the populace. To some extent, itโs possible that they donโt know the full extent of the abuse Cosetteโs enduring, but given that sheโs always wearing rags and is sent to work before daybreak - which they know because they call herย โthe Larkโ - they know that her treatment is far from ideal. And yet they praise the Thรฉnardiers for their charity simply because to them, it would be more natural for no one to care for Cosette at all. Sheโs an object of pity to them, but not of true sympathy; they donโt see her as a person.
The last line is particularly sad. I hope weโll see Cosette sing at some point.

The Lark's seed shall carry forth
The first note of a song that ends all times
And one of her blood shall sing the last.
Wait, what?
So the one singing the song is of the Lark's blood?
So they finally admitted he's not fully human?
